Korean culture will take centre stage at Christie Pits Park when the Korean DANO Spring Festival returns for the 22nd year this weekend. It runs from 6 to 11 p.m. tomorrow and from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday. It is expected to attract as many as 20,000 visitors to the park over two days through a celebration of Korean culture, dance, music and food. “That’s our main theme – it’s about introducing Korean culture,” said Minho Lee, DANO Festival executive director.

Residents wade in on controversial splash pad JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com The upcoming addition of a new splash pad in Wellesley Park has left some Old Cabbagetown residents incensed over what they say is a loss of the area’s heritage character.

10 off

Local resident Stephen Poulin likened the plan to replace the wading pool in the small park to having a miniature “Cirque du Soleil” at the end of Wellesley Street East. He feels the City did not consult enough with local residents on the project, which is being built now and

is expected to be fully installed in Wellesley Park later this summer. “They’re turning a quiet little green space that’s been used for years as a park and trees into a hyperactive Disneyland of waterworks,” he said. Adding to some residents’

dismay is the blue umbrella over the splash pad, which they say does not keep in character with the neighbourhood. Cabbagetown has earned Heritage Conservation status, which is meant to limit development in the area. >>>CITY, page 5

Scadding Court CC program gives scholarships to 46 youth

JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Some 46 Toronto youth got a muchneeded shot in the arm when it comes to realizing their dreams of getting a post-secondary education, thanks to the latest round of Investing in Our Diversity Scholarships. The program, which was initiated by Scadding Court Community Centre in 2002 with the help of lawyer and social justice activist Bill McMurtry, recognizes high-achieving students who work to end racism, promote diversity and build stronger, healthier communities. It has grown immensely over the past 14 years – in its first year, two students earned Investing in Our Diversity Scholarships, a far cry from Wednesday’s number. The winning students, hailing from across Toronto, were feted at a gala dinner at Dim Sum King restaurant on Dundas Street West. Each will receive up to $4,000 to help them cover the cost of earning a post-secondary education. Munira Abukar, who received one of the scholarships in 2010, said with-

out it, her life would have travelled a very different path. “If I hadn’t been a recipient of this scholarship, I wouldn’t have gone into the program I went into,” she said, noting not worrying as much about money gave her more freedom to follow her dreams instead of

simply studying in a field that would ensure she could pay off student loans quicker. Currently a Toronto Community Housing board member, Abukar was named one of Chatelaine magazine’s Top 20 women under 30 in 2011. She remains active in her com-

munity and ran for Toronto Council in 2014. “This scholarship changed not only my life personally, but also the lives of my parents, who have now seen seven of their nine children go on to some form of post-secondary education,” she said during the Wednesday, May 27 ceremony. While Scadding Court has run the program for the past 14 years, handing out more than $800,000 in scholarship money to some 300 recipients thanks to the generosity of its many sponsors and donors, next year’s awards will be administered

by Toronto Community Housing (TCH). Lenna Bradburn, TCH vice-president of resident and community services, said she has observed the barriers – often financial – that too many young people face when looking to further their education. “At Toronto Community Housing, we know our communities are home to some of the most brilliant young people in the country,” she said. “We also know many people in our communities struggle to continue in, or get into, school for reasons other than their own talents.” Scadding Court Community Centre Executive Director Kevin Lee said Scadding will remain involved in the selection of recipients and the distribution of scholarships. The community centre, TCH and the Community Police Liaison Committees from Toronto Police 11 and 14 Divisions have all played a role in selecting winners.

Ramsden and Regent Park to host ‘urban interventions’ Saturday JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

W

hile many Torontonians love their city, not as many get engaged and participate in activities that help to make their own communities as vibrant as they could be. That is set to change on Saturday, June 6 when 100In1Day returns to the city for the second straight year. The event sees hundreds of installations and activations, known as “urban interventions” take place in various communities. Many of this year’s 100In1Day interventions take place in downtown Toronto and the surrounding neighbourhoods. One event, a Bubble Bash to be held in Ramsden Park, aims to have an impact that lasts far longer than June 6.

Hosted by Friends of Ramsden Park, the event is looking to encourage more local residents to join the recently-founded park group to come up with programming and help ensure the forthcoming revitalization of the park goes smoothly and benefits park users. “Park People has given us guidelines in hosting events in the park, but right now there’s only about 12 or 14 of us, so we want more people to get involved,” said David Bluestein of Friends of Ramsden Park. “There are so many things we can do here. I’d like to have a movie night, we could build a bake oven, but we need people to make these things happen.” Bluestein said the park revitalization, which is slated to include an upgraded playground and a splash pad, a new multi-use court and Ping-Pong tables and perhaps

an amphitheatre, would change the way even longtime park users use Ramsden. “We’re going to be the eyes and ears through the revitalization and then in the park after the work is done, and we want that revitalization to be awesome,” he said. The Bubble Bash will take place near the Yonge Street entrance to the park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Further south, Friends of Regent Park will be celebrating 100In1Day with a celebration of their own. That event, in the new Regent Park green space at Dundas and Sackville streets, will ring in the opening of a new bake oven. “We’ll be hosting a party in the park and getting residents to come enjoy the space and get to know each other by mingling over pizza,” said CRC park coordinator and Friends of Regent Park

spokesperson Zahrah Munas. “It’s the first time we’ll really be using the bake oven; we’ve had practice runs, but the community hasn’t actually tasted anything that’s been cooked in there.” The Regent Park “Party in the Park” event will also include games and activities for kids, including face painting, arts and crafts and toys and games. There will be plenty of food on hand beyond the pizzas being prepared in the bake oven. “A local restaurant, b.good, will bring their food truck by and we’re getting a mini-oven from Dufferin Grove where we’ll be making naan bread,” Munas said. The Regent Park event runs from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Future of Gardiner Expressway should not be taken lightly

Write us

S

hould it stay? Should it go? When it comes to the Gardiner Expressway, it appears everyone has something to say. The future of the muchdebated Gardiner is coming up at Toronto City Council’s monthly meeting June 10. After much discussion about which option is best – besides doing ‘nothing’ – the two options left standing are the ‘hybrid’ option – re-configuring the expressway, basically – and the ‘removal’ option, which would tear down the entire portion east of Jarvis Street creating an eight-lane, ground-level boulevard. Factions have come down on both sides: The Toronto Region Board of Trade is on the hybrid side of things as is Mayor John Tory, whose SmartTrack plan plays into this option with a major transit hub proposed for a newly developed 49 acres of land, some public our view some private. On Monday, former Toronto Time to act mayor David Crombie together with the city’s former city planon Gardiner ner said tearing it down is the is now right decision. Also on Monday, the Toronto Board of Health decided not to send to council the report by Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown that stated removal would provide the most health benefits. And of course councillors also fall on different sides of the debate, as do Torontonians after given the chance to weigh in on the issue during meetings over the last several months. According to a recent poll by Mainstreet Technologies, 45 per cent of respondents prefer the removal option versus 33 per cent who chose the hybrid option. After all is said and done, it’s time for council to put its money where its mouth is and decide on what exactly to do with the expressway. Its future is something that must be decided – not just for now, but for the estimated 100-year lifecycle of either of the main options on the table. Councillors should decide what’s best for the city and stick to it. And if possible, find a way to make sure future councils don’t fiddle with it like they have for decades on the public transit file. Transportation as a whole in Toronto is a complex issue. It doesn’t matter whether you’re talking public transit or highways. If the Gardiner decision is well-balanced, perhaps transportation in Toronto stands a chance.

column

Tory puts stamp on board of health It’s a wonder nobody thought of it sooner. For years, the Toronto Board of Health has been a prickly ball of left-of-centre conscience that regularly rolls into more, shall we say, pragmatically conservative debates at Toronto council. Part of this is because of the mandate of the board, and the city’s health department – to exclusively concern itself with the health and well-being of Torontonians. Part of this is because for many years, mayors and their deputies have left the city council appointments to the generally progressive councillors who ask to serve on the board. So it has been that when a medical officer of health has suggested that pesticides ought to be banned or smoking in public places curtailed or casino gambling is a bad idea, the board members have obediently and enthusiastically sent that information

david nickle the city on to city council – where it might be disregarded, but cannot be ignored. You would have thought that mayors in the past would have done something about it. action Well, maybe not David Miller, who generally found himself in agreement with the pearl-clutchers at public health, but certainly Mel Lastman and Rob Ford ought to have realized that this finger-wagging fifth column needed attention. Leave it to Mayor John Tory and his deputy Denzil Minnan-Wong to finally take note, and action. Through a combination of public and city council appointments, the 20142018 Toronto Board of Health is shaping up to be a

very different beast. How different? Let’s see. On Monday, the board had before it a report from Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown, weighing in on – what else? – the Gardiner Expressway debate. Tory, as you may know, favours an expensive and controversial plan to rebuild the elevated highway where it connects to the Don Valley Parkway. In a fairly cursory report, McKeown joined various planning and city-building experts in suggesting that was a bad idea. In the last term, that report would have made its way promptly to council, and it’s not hard to see how: the councillors on the board were Ford opponents such as Raymond Cho, John Filion, Joe Mihevc, Gord Perks, Sarah Doucette and Kristyn Wong-Tam. Cue the replacements this term, where a much

smaller progressive rump of Joe Cressy, Mihevc and Doucette are joined by Jon Burnside, Christin Carmichael Grebb and Frances Nunziata – along with a new crew of citizen appointees. Paying attention It’s not a total political shift, but it was enough, along with a few of the board’s citizen appointees, to deep-six that awkward report. The board agreed to send it along to the planning department. But when council debates the Gardiner at its June meeting, the awkward opinion of Toronto’s Chief Medical Officer of Health will be off the table. Someone in the new administration has been paying attention.

Take a tour of Cabbagetown’s hidden gardens Some of Cabbagetown’s littleknown backyard gems will be opened to the public when the Hidden Gardens and Private Spaces garden tour returns. The annual tour gives guests a chance to learn others’ secrets for creating a backyard oasis in a busy urban area.. “There’s one where you have to walk through a putting green to get into the garden and when you get there, there’s a full kitchen,” said Cabbagetown Preservation Association Hidden Gardens and Private Spaces tour chair Helen Coltrinari. Another tour highlight is the rooftop garden atop the Hugh Garner co-op, which has been designed to provide a quiet space for its residents. The Hidden Spaces and Private Gardens tour will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 7. Tickets are $15, with proceeds going to the Cabbagetown Preservation Association.

City ‘blue’ some of the details >>>from page 1 “I can’t even install casement windows in my house because it doesn’t fit the area,” Poulin said. “I have to keep sash windows, which is fine, but the same rules need to apply to everyone.” Poulin fears the splash pad will turn the quiet park into something akin to the cement water area in Yonge-Dundas Square. “That’s great in wide open spaces, but this is a small, confined space,” he said. Helen Coltrinari, past chair of the Cabbagetown Preservation Association, said the blue umbrella is her greatest concern. “It’s a bright blue, which isn’t even a heritage colour and this is a heritage area,” she said. “Lots of people have been trying to contact the city to get changes made.” Both Poulin and Coltrinari said attempts to contact their councillor, Pam McConnell, over the issue had been largely unsuccessful. They acknowledged, however, that the city is planning to address their concerns over the colour of the canopy. “Apparently they’re changing it to green,” Coltrinari said. “Now the concern is, will they pick a heritage

colour? Lime green’s not a heritage colour – we want something muted in the park.” Sean McIntyre, one of McConnell’s constituency assistants, said the city’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation department was in the process of sourcing green canopies to replace the blue one currently in place. “It won’t be a light lime green,” he said. “They’re looking for a heritage green to blend in with the area and if there are multiple shades agreed to, they’ll present them to the neighbourhood.”

McIntyre said the decision to replace the wading pool with a splash pad came about after the wading pool came up on the city’s state of good repair list. “There were two options – replace the wading pool with another wading pool or put in a splash pad,” he said. “Splash pads are a popular option in a lot of cases and the Cabbagetown Residents Association was involved in the early discussions.” The splash pad is expected to be up and running by mid-July of this year.

Arrival of Pan Am flame on Canadian soil kicks off torch relay SAM JURIC sjuric@insidetoronto.com The journey has been long for the Pan Am flame; it has travelled over land and sea from Avenue of the Dead in Teotihuacan, Mexico where it was first lit in a traditional ceremony to Canadian soil. Armed with umbrellas, throngs of Canadians cheered as representatives of the First

Nations of Canada canoed toward the shore of Lake Ontario carrying the Pan Am flame Saturday morning. It is here in Toronto’s downtown core that the flame began its journey across Canada, sparking the excitement of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games within Canadians. “The Pan Am Games are important for this city because

we have the unique opportunity to show off to 41 other countries in the world,” said Mayor John Tory. “We have tried to do things differently here.” The welcoming ceremony for the torch was moved inside the Harbourfront Centre where spectators huddled around to hear Premier Kathleen Wynne and Tory usher in the 2015 Pan Am Games.

The Sacred Spirit Dancers were invited to support the arrival of the torch that was carried to shore by the representatives of First Nations. “For First Nations to take a pivotal role in this event is imperative for our homeland of Ontario,” said Garry Sault, former chief of First Nations Metis, Mississaugas New Credit. “Toronto is the heartbeat of commerce in Ontario. Showing our role as First Nations is very important.” The ceremony acknowledged the 1967 Pan Am frontrunners who were not given the opportunity to complete their journey of carrying the torch from St. Paul, Minnesota, to Winnipeg, Manitoba by welcoming them as the honoured guests of the event. “It takes me back to 1967 but brings satisfaction, completion to the journey we started,” said Frank Harper, one of the frontrunners on 1967. “This fosters co-operation between First Nations

and Canada. This is very emotional but very good at the same time,” said Bill Chippeway, another frontrunner of 1967. As the ceremony began to wind down and the party in the Distillery District was about to begin, the mystery first torchbearer of the 2015 Pan Am Games was revealed. There were cheers as Olympic gold medalist, trampoline gymnast Rosie MacLennan lit the torch to commence the relay. The celebrations continued in the Distillery District where the final torch bearer astronaut Chris Hadfield – the first Canadian to walk in space – lit the community cauldron.

Summer is finally here! Pick an Engaging Topic Persuading your child to write over the summer break may be easier if you help them identify fun and engaging topics. Suggest timely subjects. • For example, Canada Day on July 1 is a good opportunity for your children to explore their own patriotism. • Ask them if they know what patriotism is, and what it means to them. Encourage your children by helping them with some research about Canada, its history, people and places.

hildren are enjoying the warm weather, fun activities with friends and vacation time. But summer can also be an enjoyable learning experience. The summer break provides many memorable moments, and writing about them is a good way to record those memories and practice writing skills at the same time. Parents tend to focus on their children’s reading and math skills, overlooking that writing is an education fundamental. It’s fast becoming the forgotten ‘R’. This is unfortunate, as writing is an important part of every facet of education, not just in English class. Writing proficiency can have a major impact on other subject areas too. Summer vacation provides an excellent opportunity for children to explore their creative writing skills. Sylvan Learning, the leading provider of tutoring at home to students of all ages, grades and skill levels, has developed the following tips to help parents encourage their children to write over the summer:

2015

ideas and thinking about what you really want to say in your essay. • Use the Internet or library to research your topic. • Prepare an outline before you begin to write. • Use transition words – such as “after,” “although,” “before,” “however” and “therefore” to help your ideas flow together. • Be willing to revise. Change your sentences and paragraphs around, add material that lends to your writing and delete material that doesn’t work. • Avoid clichés and jargon. • Always keep a dictionary handy to help with spelling. • Use a thesaurus to help you think of a new way to say something. • Ask someone else to edit your work. • Proofread everything. Make sure grammar, spelling and punctuation are perfect before you declare anything “finished.” • Don’t rely on a computer’s spellchecker to ensure proper spelling.

For additional educational resources for children in grades pre-primary through 12, please visit www.SylvanLearning.com or call (416) 407-5083.
