New signage will make wayfinding way easier JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com New signage in the downtown core will make it easier for those unfamiliar with the area to find their way around. A new pilot project targeting the public transit and pedestrian elements of the city’s wayfinding strategy was

unveiled Monday, with 22 signs going up in Toronto’s Financial District. “Council approved a new wayfinding strategy in late 2012 that gave us the authority to do a pilot project,” said Fiona Chapman of the City of Toronto’s Department of Transportation. “There are 22 signs and finger posts in the
downtown area, with pieces embedded in the ground.” The signage also features Braille pieces to help the visually impaired, as well as upgraded maps in bus shelters and subway stations. One key feature of the new signage is heads-up mapping, Chapman said. “All the maps we’ve had
are north up, which is great if you know which direction is north or it’s a clear day and you can see landmarks like the CN Tower,” she noted, adding the new maps will offer clearer directions based on which way the map user is facing. A stretch of University Avenue recently ceremonially named in honour of Nelson Mandela is set to be home to a march that will further honour the late humanitarian’s work. Toronto council approved a motion to rename University between Front Street West and College Street after Mandela last year, with a ceremony to mark the renaming last month. Now, not-for-profit organization Mandela Legacy Canada (MLC) is leading a Freedom Walk along University from Armoury Street to Queen’s Park, marking 25 years since Mandela himself made that walk before speaking to a large crowd in front of the Ontario Legislature. “It’s the 25th anniversary of (Mandela’s) first visit to Canada and we thought this was a good way to commemorate that,” said Lloyd McKell of MLC. “The march will be a collective public expression of people’s own commitment to Nelson Mandela’s vision for a society that’s free of discrimination and that believes in the same human rights for all.” The march will culminate at Queen’s Park, where Premier Kathleen Wynne, Mayor John Tory, South African High Commissioner Membathisi >>>FREEDOM, page 11
