New signage will make wayfinding way easier JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com New signage in the downtown core will make it easier for those unfamiliar with the area to find their way around. A new pilot project targeting the public transit and pedestrian elements of the city’s wayfinding strategy was

unveiled Monday, with 22 signs going up in Toronto’s Financial District. “Council approved a new wayfinding strategy in late 2012 that gave us the authority to do a pilot project,” said Fiona Chapman of the City of Toronto’s Department of Transportation. “There are 22 signs and finger posts in the

downtown area, with pieces embedded in the ground.” The signage also features Braille pieces to help the visually impaired, as well as upgraded maps in bus shelters and subway stations. One key feature of the new signage is heads-up mapping, Chapman said. “All the maps we’ve had

are north up, which is great if you know which direction is north or it’s a clear day and you can see landmarks like the CN Tower,” she noted, adding the new maps will offer clearer directions based on which way the map user is facing. A stretch of University Avenue recently ceremonially named in honour of Nelson Mandela is set to be home to a march that will further honour the late humanitarian’s work. Toronto council approved a motion to rename University between Front Street West and College Street after Mandela last year, with a ceremony to mark the renaming last month. Now, not-for-profit organization Mandela Legacy Canada (MLC) is leading a Freedom Walk along University from Armoury Street to Queen’s Park, marking 25 years since Mandela himself made that walk before speaking to a large crowd in front of the Ontario Legislature. “It’s the 25th anniversary of (Mandela’s) first visit to Canada and we thought this was a good way to commemorate that,” said Lloyd McKell of MLC. “The march will be a collective public expression of people’s own commitment to Nelson Mandela’s vision for a society that’s free of discrimination and that believes in the same human rights for all.” The march will culminate at Queen’s Park, where Premier Kathleen Wynne, Mayor John Tory, South African High Commissioner Membathisi >>>FREEDOM, page 11

Financial District chosen for pilot In the future, how should the City’s waste be managed? How should we manage our remaining garbage even after reuse, recycling, and composting? The City is developing a Long Term Waste Management Strategy for Toronto that will provide a framework for solid waste management policy decision over the next 30 to 50 years. Our goal is to find solutions that are cost-effective, socially acceptable, and environmentally sustainable.

Chapman said the Financial District was chosen for the pilot project because it was one of the city’s more challenging areas to map out. “Downtown is the densest part of the city, so there were some really hard choices when it came to deciding what would go on the map versus what wouldn’t,” she said. “As you get out to less dense parts of the city, it will get much easier.” Of course, making sure notable buildings and landmarks were clearly identified – and identifiable – on the map provided another challenge. “There are times when you can get into a Beach-versus-Beaches debate; what do people who know the area call this?” Chapman said. The new signs were installed primarily along King Street, though the full pilot area ranges from Queen Street south to Front and from John Street to Berczy Park. They are part of a multi-modal wayfinding system that is expected to expand elsewhere in the city. Chapman said a cycling wayfinding project along the Shaw Street bikeway is slated to be trialled later this year, while the City of Toronto’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation department is looking at implementing a wayfinding strategy to map out the Don River Trail

as early as next year. Better signage for drivers travelling on expressways is also expected to follow in time. “We’re looking at having exits numbered as well as named,” she said. “So if you’re going along, let’s say, the Gardiner, you could tell your friend to exit at Spadina or Exit 2. It’s about making sure people can get to where they need to go even if they don’t have complete information.”

Queens Quay reopens for Redpath Waterfront Festival Pride Toronto JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com After three years of construction, the revitalized Queens Quay is set to reopen with a bang this weekend. The recently revamped area is officially opening again in time for the annual Redpath Waterfront Festival, with plenty on tap to draw visitors downtown to check out the new features that promise to turn it into a pedestrian paradise. “There’s the Redpath Waterfront Festival and then our own celebration, the Party on the Promenade, said Carol Jolly, executive director of the Waterfront BIA. “Ours is named after the fact that we’re being given a promenade after three years of construction. Jolly said the revitalized Queens Quay will make the area “the most pedestrian-friendly neighbourhood in Toronto, with new trees, upgraded lighting and sidewalks that stretch as wide as 30 feet in places. “We have an unusual way of taking back our street; we’ll be unfurling a 900-metre blue ribbon and it will have a wave-like motion as it goes down the street, she said. “We’ll probably need at least 1,000 people just to unfurl the ribbon, and we’ll have a ribbon-cutting with the plan of keeping some of the fabric

on display all summer long. Party on the Promenade will kick off with official opening ceremonies starting at 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Simcoe WaveDeck. Buskers, art demonstrations and artisan market, live music from the Waterfront Singing Ambassadors and others, yoga, canoe rides, stand-up paddleboarding demonstrations and more will take place until 10 p.m. with a parade running the length of the celebrations – from Sherbourne

Common to HTO Park East – taking place from 8 to 9 p.m. Saturday will feature many of the same attractions from noon until 10 p.m., along with new draws including the Purina PawsWay Pet Parade at the opening of Martin Goodman Trail. The festivities will continue on Sunday with hip hop demos, buskers, live music and more from noon until 7 p.m. While Party on the Promenade

is certainly a jam-packed affair, it will only be part of the Redpath Waterfront Festival, which has turned the city’s waterfront into a popular destination every year since its inception in 2010. “We had a big celebration then when we brought the Tall Ships back to Toronto for the first time since 1994, said Lea Parrell, Redpath Waterfront Festival co-producer. “Since then, we’ve brought them back every year. Parrell noted there will be plenty on tap for pet lovers at the festival. “We’ll have a canine aquatic show where dogs will compete to qualify for the World Championships, then the Ultimutts stunt dog show at Sherbourne Common, she said. “That will really be a family oriented park with chalk art and Pirate Life doing a pirate show. Sugar Beach promises to be a well-attended site as well, though it will have more of an adult bent, hosting the Toronto Wine & Spirit Festival from today to Saturday. On Sunday, the beach will be home to the Pride Torontosanctioned Sweetness Pride Beach Party complete with live DJs, food trucks and a licensed bar.

We’re shining the spotlight on good, quality journalism Information overload is one of the defining characteristics of this generation. There’s so much of it everywhere, and often it’s unsolicited and uninformed, which makes distinguishing the truth from the fiction a difficult task. When content is packaged similarly, or arrives to you en-masse at rapid speed, how do you discover the information that will help you become better informed, versus the content that may lead you astray? There’s an effort underway to shine a light on quality information where journalism is concerned. Dubbed ‘JournalismIS’, the campaign aims to promote professional journalism and all that it stands for: reliability, accuracy and accountability. Starting soon you’ll see advertisements in The City Centre Mirror and other newspapers, on television and online touting the benefits of good journalism. We’re great at telling other people’s stories – we’re trained to do so and committed to that objective – but as journalists we’re not great at telling our own stories and promoting what we do. That’s why the team at The Mirror and all Metroland newspapers in Ontario have joined forces with other major news outlets, media associations, unions and journalism schools to support the JournalismIS campaign. The volume of today’s information and range of opinion challenges the very nature of our industry, so we need to support one another in preserving and promoting the work we do. We need to demonstrate the power behind good journalism in engaging the public and – particularly where community news is concerned – fostering a stronger connection between individuals and the neighbourhoods in which they live. “News is the lifeblood of democracy,” said Mary Agnes Walsh, campaign spokesperson and Winnipeg Free Press reporter at the JournalismIS launch in Toronto last week. “Our campaign is aimed at initiating a wider conversation about the value of journalism and what we all need to do to support a robust journalistic culture in Canadian society.” So in the spirit of sparking that conversation, we invite our readers to tell us what they look for in good journalism. Does that come across in the pages of The City Centre Mirror and online at www.citycentremirror.com? Where would you make suggestions for improvement? Our news team holds firm to its position of objectivity, but we also remain accountable to those we serve – and that’s you, our reader. Email us your thoughts to press@insidetoronto.com

Provincial Liberals to learn same lesson on carding that Mayor John Tory did? Maybe those holding power in this city and this province want to eventually stamp out the odious practise of carding by police and maybe they don’t. But if they do, a word of advice: it’s hard to stamp something out walking tip-toe. That seems to be what the provincial government had in mind this week when it sent Community Safety Minister Yasir Naqvi out to announce new regulations this fall to govern police when they stop and question members of the public not suspected of a crime. The regulation isn’t a ban of the investigative practice that has been shown to disproportionately target young men of colour in Toronto, and Naqvi made that clear when he announced it on Tuesday. The regulations, yet

david nickle the city unreleased, will simply require that stops by police not be arbitrary. It isn’t going over any better with community groups than the policy approved earlier this year at the Toronto Police Services Board, a policy that amounted to little more than guidelines. Today Mayor John Tory will make a forthright attempt to stop carding once and for all, bringing a motion to the Toronto Police Services Board along with a mea culpa, for supporting the policy to begin with this spring. It’s a position Tory was shamed into taking by a gathering of highly influential Torontonians and a seminal essay by Toronto

journalist Desmond Cole describing in detail the indignity and traumatizing effect of the practice. Learning a lesson It’s a wonder the provincial government isn’t taking a lesson from Tory’s experience and matching his newfound disdain. It’s true police value carding as an intelligencegathering strategy. The information gleaned may well contribute to ongoing investigations or simply give police a better map of the communities they’re assigned to protect. But one wonders at the intensity of the defence of the practise by Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders and his predecessor Bill Blair. Crime rates have been declining for years in Toronto and it is unlikely

that police enforcement, or lack thereof, has had as much to do with that as have simple demographic shifts. At the same time, there’s a wider context emerging, as evidence emerges that police across North America are engaging in sometimes quite odious acts of racial profiling and violence toward people of colour. Holding all that in balance, it is perplexing to see political leadership indulge the digging-of-heels that persists in policing ranks. Tory learned the folly of that, but he had to be taught. The provincial Liberals, having seen that example play out at their doorstep, seem bound to learn that lesson themselves.

Eric St-Laurent Trio plays jazz festival JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Eric St. Laurent is set to bring his infectious uptempo Afro-Cuban beats to the TD Toronto Jazz Festival next week. The frontman for the Eric St-Laurent Trio has long been a fan of jazz music, having gotten into the music genre as a young boy. “My dad had a huge jazz record collection – Thelonious Monk, Oscar Peterson, Buddy Rich, John Coltrane – so from the time I started playing guitar at seven or eight, I started out trying to play Thelonious Monk,” he said. What drew him most to jazz was its collaborative and improvisational nature. “You’re really composing spontaneously with others,” he said. “Not just the other musicians on stage with you, but also the audience.” While his early musical leanings were toward more traditional jazz, St. Laurent

fell in love with Afro-Cuban jazz after spending years living outside of Toronto. He came across the style while attending a show at Lula Lounge and was hooked. “I was just amazed by the quality of the musicianship and the joy in the music,” he said. “It’s very accessible music and my main concern when I’m writing,

rehearsing and performing is to create a happy, warm, uplifting vibe. There’s enough sad and depressing events and music in general out there.” St. Laurent acknowledges Afro-Cuban jazz is unfamiliar to many. As a subcategory within a genre that rarely receives mainstream attention, it often goes

unnoticed even by those who enjoy jazz music. He notes Afro-Cuban jazz – and truthfully, jazz in general – belies the common misconception that jazz music is a dense genre typically only appreciated by aficionados. “I think when a lot of people are exposed to jazz they’re very surprised,” he said. “People are led to think it’s very complex and impenetrable, but really it’s in the moment and fresh.” He added jazz truly defies boundaries or definition. “It’s not a style; it’s the spirit of improvisation as it relates to the music of our time,” he said. “You could be playing anything – you could be playing EDM beats – but if the DJ starts improvising, that’s jazz.” The Eric St-Laurent Trio features a fairly standard setup, with St. Laurent playing guitar, Jordan O’Connor on bass and Michel DeQuevedo on percussion. For the trio’s TD Toronto Jazz Festival

show, DeQuevedo will be replaced by Art Avalos due to scheduling conflicts. St. Laurent said that lineup played together in Germany a few weeks ago and meshed well. While the trio spends a lot of time on the road, St. Laurent said playing Toronto is always a thrill. “It’s where I call home now,” he said. “I love being downtown. I’m a very urban person; I love skyscrapers, cars and lots of people in the streets. Forests make me very nervous.” The Eric St-Laurent Trio will play a free show as part of the TD Toronto Jazz Festival at the Shops at Don Mills at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 27. The festival itself runs from Thursday, June 18 through Monday, June 29.

fall on Father’s Day weekend,” said Lombardi, who added the shift to College Street was not related to the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. “It would have been challenging, but that wasn’t the motivation. It was really the 100 years of Johnny and I thought to really bring it home by bringing it back to his neighbourhood.” According to Lombardi, there were “so many reasons to bring it back,” but the history and legacy his father left behind in the neighbourhood was the main one. “He was raised in this neighbourhood. The entire Lombardi family was raised here. I still live here. It’s home for the Lombardi family.” Dubbed the pioneer of multicultural broadcasting in Canada, Johnny used the second floor of the supermarket he owned and ran

on College Street as the first station for CHIN Radio in 1966 and CHIN-FM in 1967. A year later, the radio station was broadcasting in 32 languages at 60 hours per week with Italian programming dominating the airwaves. “He really was the spiritual leader of multiculturalism in the media. He had a great impact on the city and how the city grew up embracing this whole nation,” Lombardi said. “We looked at this opportunity as a way to bring a little focus to his accomplishments throughout his career, especially in broadcasting because all his great ideas were born here.” Lombardi said there’s a piazza in his name at Grace and College streets with a statue of Johnny sitting on a concrete bench, while the City of Toronto also officially named a portion of College between Clinton and Grace

streets Johnny Lombardi Way. Regular attendees of the event can still expect the CHIN Picnic staples such as the bikini pageant and multicultural food, with the added bonus of Italian flavour with the Taste of Little Italy and the Rising Star singing competition. To commemorate Johnny’s impact, the radio station at 632 College St. will transform the building’s lobby into an audio and visual exhibit that highlights Johnny’s accomplishments and iconic words and contributions to the city. “He had a very strong connection to this neighbourhood. He never left,” Lombardi said.

Freedom Walk to shine light on First Nations >>>from page 1 Mdladlana and other dignitaries will speak, pay tribute to Mandela and push for a more inclusive and equitable Canada. The event will also feature a live concert at Queen’s Park with Juno Award-winning Digging Roots, world music singer Lorraine Klaasen, Mexican/ South African singer Amanda Martinez and others. While Mandela is best known for his work in com-

bating apartheid and racial inequality in South Africa – efforts that led to his imprisonment – the Freedom Walk will have a more Canadian bent, shining a light on some of the injustices faced by First Nations Canadians. “We’ll be showing solidarity with the First Peoples of Canada,” McKell said. “Our march is happening on the eve of National Aboriginal Day, so it makes sense for us.”

MLC hopes the walk draws a large crowd, but no matter how well it goes over, McKell said there are no plans to make it a regular event. The walk will kick off at noon at University Avenue and Armoury Street Saturday, June 20, with the crowd gathering at Queen’s Park in time for the start of ceremonies there at 1:30 p.m.

Media groups join forces to promote professional journalism GRACE PEACOCK gpeacock@insidetoronto.com A coalition of media outlets, associations, unions and journalism schools are banding together in a marketing campaign to spread the message that professional journalism just can’t be beat. Pegged ‘JournalismIS,’ the campaign is backed by Metroland Media Group, the publisher of this paper, and will feature newspaper, television and online advocacy ads touting the value of professional journalism. “Our starting point for this was a general worry that journalists weren’t doing enough to tell their own stories,” said campaign spokesperson Mary Anges Welch at the launch last Friday at the Ryerson School of Journalism in Toronto. The former president of the Canadian Association of Journalists and reporter for the Winnipeg Free Press said: “We’re not talking enough

about the contribution we make nationally, but also on the local level to Canadian public life. We’re not talking about the value of an independent, reliable, ethical, impartial journalistic culture in Canada.” The advertisements, which began to appear across news outlets Saturday, June 13, for the next four months, aim to rally the journalism community to increase awareness, recognition and support for professional journalism. Ian Oliver, president of Metroland Media Group, agreed the media does a great job telling other people’s stories, but not so much their own. And having professional journalists at the grassroots level is just important as covering stories on a national level, he said. “Many people overlook the importance of community journalism. I think we’re the fabric of the community,” Oliver said in an interview.

“Metroland employs about 500 professional journalists – we’re a significant part of the journalism world. And if Metroland isn’t providing a forum for the community, investigating stories and providing information, nobody else is doing it.” Toronto Star reporter Chantal Hébert said she hopes the campaign sparks a conversation among the public about the role journalists play in shedding light on important issues, but also in driving public engagement. “I believe a better informed public will come to better informed decisions, but more importantly, a well informed public is one that will be more engaged – which is even more important than whether you think a decision is well informed or not.” For more information visit www.journalismIS.ca or follow the Twitter #journalismis to become part of the conversation.

Jane is a beautiful, sweet 43 year-old nurse and looking for the right man. Jane has never been married, has no children, and no baggage. She loves football, hockey, going to concerts, and being outdoors. She is very down to earth, and easy to get along with. She is a great listener and always wants to help others. Jane is a very charitable person; she donates and volunteers for many causes including children’s charities and animal shelters. Jane doesn’t drink or smoke, she is not one to go to bars, and she has had a hard time meeting the right person in her small community. She is always up to try new things and is open to new experiences. She’s a bit shy at first, and she is nervous about dating, but really wants to meet the right person to settle down with. She is very open and accepting of people, she’s non-judgmental, and cares more about who someone is on the inside rather than the outside. She is looking for a good man who is energetic, fun, adventurous, has a good sense of humor, is down-to-earth, and a little bit romantic.
