MPP Dong vows to fight for better transit JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com With last Thursday’s election firmly in the rear-view mirror, new Trinity-Spadina MPP Han Dong is already looking forward to what the next four years will bring. Dong took over from longtime representative Rosario

Despite Marchese’s experience, the neophyte MPP was confident going into the election. “I was a little surprised at the margin of victory and pleased by the fact that (the Liberals) got a majority government,” he said. “I always felt that we were going to win locally and

Starting this weekend, the downtown community of Regent Park will finally live up to its name. The neighbourhood will see a new, sizable green space officially opened on Saturday, June 21, adding much-needed recreational opportunities to the area. Simply dubbed Regent Park, the new space will feature picnic areas, a splash pad, playgrounds and a large open space for sports and other activities. It will also include a greenhouse, community garden and bake oven to add to the programming available. Covering an area bounded by Dundas, Sackville, Oak and Sumach streets, the park will be a welcome oasis in a community with a growing number of highrise buildings. L o c a l c o u n c i l l o r Pa m McConnell, who will return from a conference out of town for the landmark opening, has long been looking forward to the opening of the park. “The opening of Regent Park marks yet another significant milestone in the revitalization of this magnificent neighbourhood,” she said via email. “The community was at the table from the beginning of this project, and the final design fully reflects their vision.” >>>green, page 12

Bannockburn School founder and principal retires after 20 years JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com For more than 20 years, students at Bannockburn School have been welcomed by the familiar face of its founder and principal, Adalove Gorrie. As of the end of this school year, her smile will no longer grace Bannockburn’s hallways, as she moves on to the next chapter in her life. Gorrie started the school, near Avenue Road and Highway 401 in 1983, running an elementary school program that follows the Montessori curriculum and principles. She started as a public school teacher at Silver Creek Public School in Etobicoke before taking a break to raise her own children. When she decided to return to work, rather than return to the public school system, she co-founded Bannockburn with her husband, Terry. They decided to open the private institution in a former public school building that had been made redun-

dant roughly 50 years earlier. “What drew me to (the Montessori) program is that not all children are at the same level,” she said. “It’s hard to teach in the normal school system when you have some students who pick things up right away and others who might need it explained a few times.” Bannockburn School teaches students from three years of age up to Grade 6. Older students offer special help and support to the younger ones, and materials are openly available for all students. “We don’t have textbooks and materials for every student, but all didactic materials are on shelves where any student can use them as they need them,” Gorrie said. “There are materials focusing on languages, math, practical lessons, sensorial and cultural lessons.” Upper school children – those from Grades 4 through 6 – have access to computers, an iPad and a Mac in addition to more conventional textbooks and other materials.

Bannockburn School founders Terry and Adalove Gorrie sit surrounded by students on a bench that will be installed at the school to commemorate their contribution. Adalove Gorrie will leave her role as head of the school at the end of this school year. (June 10, 2014)

As important as the materials are, however, Gorrie has fostered an environment at Bannockburn where the community is as integral in ensuring the school’s students are well-supported. The school has just under 100 students, but it has a dozen teachers and a very active parent body.

“We all have to work together for the kids – the teachers and the parents,” she said. That parent body has worked hard to preserve the green space adjacent to the school, seeking signatures for an online petition at www.thepetitionsite.com/755/228/836/savebannockburns-green-space until

June 30. The TDSB owns the land – Bannockburn leases its space – and is looking to sell off a portion of it to developers to cover costs. “Most public elementary schools are on about two-and-a-half acres and we have about five,” Gorrie said. “If the TDSB were to sever the property, it wouldn’t affect the school, but the field is used by the neighbourhood greatly. It’s not unusual to see 30, 40 or 50 people using it on the weekend.” Because Bannockburn rents its space from the TDSB, Gorrie noted the school has tried to remain agnostic in the battle over the green space. She, however, supports the parents and local residents trying to keep it a public green space. “Preserving this green space isn’t something to do for the school, it’s something to keep for the community,” she said. Gorrie was recognized at a special celebration featuring Bannockburn students, parents and alumni at the school on Tuesday, June 10.

Cats and cappuccinos: Pet Me Meow launches cat café pop-up NATALIE CHU nchu@insidetoronto.com It was the purr-fect combination. Cats and coffee were paired recently at Toronto’s first pop-up cat café . Hundreds were scheduled to enjoy the event held on the top floor of RedFish BlueFish cafe on Harbord Street. Hosted by Pet Me Meow, a new initiative between entrepreneurs Jeff Ro, from Regent Park, and Ashkan Rahimi from North York, in partnership with the Toronto Cat Rescue, the idea was to provide a space where cats up for adoption could socialize and possibly meet their future owners. “I’ve always loved cats. They mellow me out a bit,” said Ro, who adopted his own cat from Toronto Humane Society. “We wanted to create a fun and attractive space where you can drink a cappuccino and just come and relax and play with kittens.”

Ro and his business partner both enjoy looking for startups and were following a lot of the cat cafés in Asia. One of the newest ones in London, England, had amazing reception in the city, Ro said. He figured Toronto needed something like it. “You go online now and it’s all cats. Cats are in funny, cute and stupid things, but there is real homelessness and ultimately cat euthanasia in the city,” he said. He said he hoped the pop-up would provide a glimpse into what a cat café in Toronto could be like, and bring awareness to those who’ve never considered adopting a pet, or aren’t able to due to living circumstances. As Ro predicted, the response was overwhelming. Within 48 hours, nearly 80 per cent of appointments were sold. Before opening the Friday morning event, two cats were

already adopted while by the time the event ended, eight of the nine were adopted. Cat lover Emma Ichikawa

was one of the first hour-long appointments Friday. She was visibly excited to see the nine kittens in the space. Ichikawa visited a cat café in Japan while living there and found it to be an interesting experience. After receiving an email from Toronto Cat Rescue she figured “I got to get on this,” she said. “If you’re thinking of getting a cat it’s really good hands-on experience that would help you make that leap, or maybe show you that

it’s not for you,” Ichikawa said. She wasn’t planning on adopting any cats at the café, but said there are two cats on the Toronto Cat Rescue website she’s considering. “I adopted kittens last time so I’d like to adopt older cats. Spread the love,” she said. As for the future of Pet Me Meow, Ro and his business partner have set their eyes on a permanent location, most likely in the west end. Multiple locations, however, aren’t off the table. “We want to be the best,” Ro said. There is a Pet Me Meow Indiegogo campaign to help launch the first space. Their goal was $70,000 and they reached nearly $13,000 by the time of press deadline Tuesday.

Wynne must use majority to move transit plans forward

W

ith last week’s majority government win by the Kathleen Wynne Liberals, her party has been given a strong mandate by voters in Toronto and surrounding areas to make transit a top priority over the next four years. Her victory can also be interpreted as strong support for the Metrolinx Big Move transit plan for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), which was first introduced under the Liberal government of former premier Dalton McGuinty in 2008. The election of Rob Ford as Toronto’s mayor in 2010 and a Liberal minority in the 2011 provincial election saw transit become highly politicized. Talk on who and how it would be paid for and the debate between LRTs and subways seemed never-ending. In the last year, though, we have started making decisions on our transit future our view and how to pay for it. The province, city and federal governall agreed on an extension Subway/LRT ments of the Bloor-Danforth subway talk should be from Kennedy station to the Scarborough Town Centre. The over city approved a property tax increase of 0.5 per cent to help pay for its portion. Yet, it comes up repeatedly as a municipal election issue with both mayoral candidates Olivia Chow and David Soknacki saying the Scarborough subway extension should be scrapped in favour of an LRT. As was mentioned at a city mayoral candidates’ debate this week, any discussion of a Scarborough subway extension should be finished. Every Liberal MPP elected in Scarborough supports that subway extension, and made it a key part of their campaigns. Any thought that this could now be changed with a new mayor of Toronto or change in councillors cannot be accepted by Wynne and her new majority government. The same goes for a number of other transit plans across the Greater Toronto Area. Voters are expecting transit action from the Liberals, which Wynne herself promised numerous times during the campaign. Her party took away seats from the only PC (Doug Holyday in Etobicoke-Lakeshore) and three NDP incumbents in Toronto due in no small part to her transit plans. The Liberals also gained seats in the 905 communities around the city. Wynne now has an opportunity to take that mandate and do the right thing when it comes to transit expansion across the GTHA.

column

Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti amuses himself at the expense of others Parkdale is not a “pedophile district”. Deputants who come before city hall committees asking programs be spared are not de-facto communists. A secret cabal of left-wing Toronto councillors have not been wiretapping the councillor from Ward 7. I could go on for an entire column, correcting the fanciful and offensive assertions that have fallen from the lips of Giorgio Mammoliti over the years, and if I did, it would, I suspect, be an entertaining column, in a low-comedy kind of way. But like so much low comedy, it would simply underline the same point: Mammoliti, who is one of the longer-squatting denizens of Toronto council’s lunatic fringe, is kind of creepy. If it weren’t for our cracksmoking mayor doing the heavy lifting, Mammoliti could even be an international embarrassment for

david nickle the city this town. Of course, one person’s international embarrassment is another’s local-boymade-good, and Mammoliti’s constituents in northwestern North York have been happy enough with his behaviour to send him back to city hall over and over. Mammoliti’s remarks and actions are all calculated to stoke an oldee-tymee suburban-urban grievance, using as his accelerant a deep social conservatism that frankly mirrors the mayor’s. It’s not surprising, then, that as the municipal election campaign gears up, Mammoliti should choose to wind things up with that business about “pedophile districts.” Parkdale is an interesting

and vibrant community these days, but a couple of decades ago it was known as a place marred by crime and drug abuse – much as many people still regard Mammoliti’s own Jane-Finch community. So. Deride a community that’s got a rocky history, and just for good measure throw pedophilia into the mix, and suggest the local councillor is representing their issues over the safety of children. It’s a classic Mammoliti game – one that he’s been playing since 1995, when he left a one-term stint on Bob Rae’s NDP backbench at Queen’s Park to join former mayor Mel Lastman’s North York Council, then went to Toronto council as amalgamation took hold, theatrically tearing up his NDP membership card and walking into the Liberals’ loose embrace. Mammoliti became wellknown mostly in the breach – his lack of discipline when

it came to spending his office budgets, his limelight-seeking behaviour (remember the time he took off his shirt in a scrum to protest the clothing-optional beach at Hanlan’s Point?), his demagogic mischief-making and his changeable loyalties. Which all, as I may have mentioned earlier, points to one truth: Mammoliti is kind of creepy, and he seems to revel in it; it is a game to him. For the rest of us, it’s a shame. The Mayor Rob Ford follies aside, when our neighbours speak about the dysfunction and absurdity of Toronto city politics, they are thinking in large part about Giorgio Mammoliti – amusing himself with verbal pugilism, at the expense of almost everyone else.

provincial election

Dong calls for express transit from Liberty Village to Union Station >>>from page 1 on the campaign trail, made him a familiar face for voters. “I’ve been knocking on doors with my supporters since last year and I could tell (the Liberal platform was) on to something that resonates with voters,” he said. He also no doubt benefited from the Liberal surge that saw other former NDP ridings Davenport and Beaches-East York turn red. In the end, Dong earned 26,569 votes to 17,547 for Marchese, who had represented the riding since its formation in 1999. Marchese narrowly survived a challenge from Liberal Sarah Thomson in 2011, winning by just over 1,100 votes. Dong vowed to fight for better transit for the residents of Trinity-Spadina. “There are two things I’ll be pushing hard on,” he said. “One is the downtown relief line and the other is the twoway, 15-minute electrified

Dong wants to see more

Beyond that, he will push for a better solution to planning issues to ensure development in Trinity-Spadina does not alter the character of the neighbourhoods there. “I want residents to have more say in how they want their neighbourhoods to be,” he said.

Toronto fans proudly show their World Cup colours

The World Cup is off to a roaring start in Brazil with a number of surprising results that have had Toronto soccer fans either cheering or shaking their heads. The tourney opened last Thursday with host Brazil scoring the game’s first goal into their own net. After that, Brazil recovered and went on to win 3-1 over Croatia, setting off cheering in a number of Toronto neighbourhoods including Little Portugal. Fans of Portugal itself were not cheering on Monday, though, as their team fell 4-0 to Germany. On Friday, the tournament forged an even stronger link with Toronto soccer fans as Jonathan de Guzman, who grew up in Scarborough and played with the North Scarborough club until he moved to Holland at age 12 to further his soccer skills, was in the starting-11 for the Netherlands game against defending World Cup champs Spain.

The Dutch easily won that game 5-1 with de Guzman on the field until the 62nd minute. There’s still plenty of games left to come in firstround Group play at the tournament, which wraps up Thursday, June 26. For a full World Cup schedule, visit us at http://goo.gl/LbwZNM Games today (Thursday, June 19) are Colombia versus Ivory Coast, Uruguay versus England, and Greece versus Japan. Regent Park Farmers’ Market is back Green space to bring JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Following a successful first year, the Regent Park Farmers’ Market is set to return, this time with even more local flavour. The market will be smaller this year, shrinking from as many as 18 vendors to a more manageable 14 to 16. More importantly, more space will be devoted to locals. Last year, the market gave some space to local residents who shared food they made, many with the assistance of the Paintbox Bistro. “The split (for a farmers’ market) should be at least 51 per cent farmers and 49 per cent (other) vendors, but we’ve got special permission to have more local vendors if we want,” said Regent Park Farmers’ Market manager Joe Durand. “There will be food from pretty much any country you can imagine.” Paintbox Bistro will once again help out, and Durand noted a partnership with Cater Toronto has been crucial in ensuring local vendors receive the support they need to create successful ventures. Even the farmers will be more local, with the majority hailing from

within 10 miles of the downtown community. Some of last year’s vendors opted not to return to the market, but a new partnership with local organization Green Thumbs Growing Kids will make the food more accessible for a larger percentage of Regent Park residents. “They’ll have youth manning a table where if people want to share food or have it prepared, the youth will take care of it,” Durand said. That means local seniors who may have a hard time chopping vegetables can have them cut up for them. Those living alone, meanwhile,

can have food split up to share with neighbours. “For singles, a whole head of lettuce might be too much for them for a week,” Durand said. “This way, they can share with someone else.” The market will also provide more than a place for people to buy produce. Thanks to a partnership with Artscape, local musicians, spoken word artists and other performers will add live entertainment. Buskers will also set up and perform. To make room for the new attractions, the market will move into a new mews space just east of its former space on Regent Park Boulevard. The mews will feature planters, trees and benches to turn the market from a shopping space to a social space. “The hope is that with a new design, people can buy a little, eat a little, listen to some music and meet with their neighbours,” Durand said. “We want people to feel like it’s their market.” The market re-opens Wednesday, June 25. It will be open from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. every Wednesday until Sept. 24.

community together >>>from page 1 Local not-for-profit organizations, like CRC, Dixon Hall and Green Thumbs Growing Kids, will run programs related to the garden, greenhouse and bake oven. Liz Curran of the CRC said the green space – and the gardening areas in particular – will bring community members together. “We’ll have different groups working together in the community garden,” she said. “The vision is to bring together seniors, youth, people with diverse cultural backgrounds and skills so they can all determine what they want to see in the space and work together to get that.” A special Friends of Regent Park group will be set up to bring people together to work on issues related to the park. Those interested in joining can do so by emailing FriendsofRegentPark@tcrc.ca “The city’s empowering us to take care of the various elements of the park, so that group will look after the basic planting and care of the plants and making sure everything’s

well-watered and taken care of,” Curran said. While the garden will bring people together, the bake oven will provide a place where local groups can get together, share recipes, stories and company. “There are a lot of new people coming into the neighbourhood, so this will be a great way for people to get to know each other over a slice of fresh pizza, fresh bread or other food,” Curran said. The park abuts the Regent Park Aquatic Centre, making that entire block an important social and recreational outlet for local residents. Most importantly, its many features ensure it will provide an open green space for residents, but that it will also be much more than that. “Regent Park will be a place for everyone to come together to enjoy art, music, food, recreation and play,” McConnell said.

Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores) is pleased to announce the appointment of Barbara Cooney to Chair of the Board of Directors. Ms. Cooney has been a member of the Board since 2009 and currently chairs the Governance and Compensation Committee.

Forest Hill CI student wins entrepreneurial competition with note-sharing website JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Forest Hill Collegiate is starting to make a name for itself as a web-savvy, innovative school. For the second consecutive year, a Forest Hill student has been named among the winners of a province-wide Ontario Centres of Excellence entrepreneurship competition dubbed Make Your Pitch. Both winners were recognized for website concepts. This year’s winner, Joshua Karbi, came up with the concept for NoteShare, a site in which students can share class notes when they miss class or find their own notes to be lacking. “People’s notes can be rated by other users and you can get free credits to read notes by posting your own,” Karbi said. “That gives people an incentive to get on there and add their own notes.” Karbi won a chance to take part in summer business train-

ing as part of the competition, but the Grade 9 student might not be able to attend until next year, given that he is only 14 and the sessions require students to be 15. While most students would use that training to get their projects off the ground, Karbi is looking into getting NoteShare started up sooner. “I’m thinking of contacting a web designer in Toronto,” he said. “I have a connection with someone who works for an e-book company, so I’ll look into that.” As part of the competition, students had to come up with an idea and pitch it to a jury. Karbi leaned on teacher Aneta Costin and fellow student Iman Jafari to help him with his pitch. “I had never really made a business pitch before, so they helped me with my idea and with how to make it interesting for the judges,” he said. “Iman gave me the tip that I should give handouts to the judges before I started and

I think that helped me win because I was the only one with handouts. He helped me by giving me the idea to get the audience’s attention by asking for a (show) of hands.” Jafari won last year for Foodpost, a recipe-sharing site that offers recipes from around the world. He came up with the idea when his mom was hosting guests. “She was trying to cook unique recipes from different countries and she couldn’t find recipes in her own language,” he said. Foodpost.ca allows users to submit recipes, rate and comment on others and save favourites. Like Karbi, Jafari was in Grade 9 when he won. He also credited Costin for helping him along with the competition and said he was happy to pass along what he learned while competing to his fellow student.
