While most schools focus on the “three Rs” of reading, writing and ‘rithmetic, Palmerston Avenue Junior Public School is adding a fourth R to that list:
resuscitation. Grade 6 students at the school benefited from a visit from Toronto EMS staff on Friday, Feb. 27 to learn the basics of CPR using mannequins, along with some tips on using an automated external
defibrillator (AED) in case of emergency. The special class came about at the behest of Harriet Druker, whose children attend Palmerston. “I remember learning it as a kid and then I learned again
when I had a family member who was diagnosed with a condition that made them more likely to need CPR,” she said. Each student had his or her own mannequin on which to work, with EMS volunteers >>>ems, page 10
While the Regent Park School of Music (RPSM) has historically been home to the sounds of classical and guitar music, its newest program is adding a touch of urban cool to the school. Last year, RPSM started offering turntable classes at its Daniels Spectrum location, giving a select few youngsters a chance to drop beats, mix tracks and learn other ins and outs of being a DJ. Local DJs provide the youngsters with instruction on professional equipment, some of which they can sign out to use at home. “This has been in our plans for a while and we knew we’d have great engagement,” said RPSM executive director Richard Marsella. “We’re looking to do more of it as we move into the new year.” There are two classes – one for students aged nine to 12 and the other for students aged 13 to 18 – and as with all RPSM classes, they are offered for a nominal fee, ensuring they remain accessible to all. >>>popular, page 5

Tom Cochrane returns home to Massey Hall New album ‘Take it Home’ just released JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com If, as his signature hit suggests, life is a highway, Tom Cochrane’s road has led him many places before bringing him back home. The famed singer-songwriter is getting set to play Massey Hall in support of his new album, fittingly named Take it Home. The album was released in February and, in Cochrane’s words, takes care of some unfinished business. “The songs on there are stories that have been left untold in my music, both musically and thematically,” he said. “It’s a bit of a retrospective that way. It’s mostly (personal stories) and stories I’ve heard that I haven’t been able to tell yet for whatever reason.” One song – ‘The Ones That I’ve
Known’ – harkens back to the rocker’s early career, when he was a struggling performer pondering a career change. While driving long distances for a tour, a serendipitous brush with a Canadian icon kept him on his current path. “Back in the 80s, I was thinking of quitting the business,” he recalled. “There were a lot of long drives, and I was on one for a tour when the traffic stops outside of Thunder Bay and this kid runs by with one leg – it was Terry Fox.” “I thought, ‘man, look at his courage. How tough is what I’m doing? Not very tough compared to what he was doing.’” Other songs follow Cochrane’s career-long style of telling stories that revolve around everyday life, with the debut track, “Can’t Stay Here,” offering a glimpse into his own life as a travelling musician. “Everything comes from a storytelling aspect, and that’s because of my folk background, playing in coffee houses,” he said. Musically, Take it Home is vintage Tom Cochrane – straight-ahead rock with elements of various southern music styles peppered

in – with the singer calling it “a sort of outlaw rock record, even though there are ballads mixed in.”
It marks the first album of new music Cochrane has released in nine years, and the rocker said it may well be one of his last. “I think you have to have a reason to make a record – you have to have something you need to get out there,” he said. “It’s hard to tour without something new to offer. After this record, I may be done, or I may have one more acoustic record in me – something really pared down.” His upcoming gig at Massey Hall will be a fitting stop on his tour – Cochrane loves the venue and has a history there. “Massey Hall is the epitome for me,” he said. “It’s where I cut my teeth and where I saw some of the best shows of my life. You can really feel the ghosts when you go into
that room.” Playing such a venerable and beloved concert hall is a long way from where Cochrane got his start as a raw youngster playing coffee houses in Toronto. He recalled an early gig at the Riverboat coffee house, when he kept popping strings on his guitar because he was so unpolished. “That’s where I learned to tell stories – I needed something to kill time while I fixed the strings,” he said. Massey Hall is also close to his downtown home – he currently lives with his wife Kathy in a building in which he once rehearsed in his earlier days. When it comes to his life, his career, and the musical legacy he has created, he clearly has – in the words of another of his hits – no regrets. “It’s been a good journey and I’ve been really blessed to have the career I’ve had,” he said. “Life’s all about balance, and I’ve found a good balance.”

Regent Park comedian Shawn Ahmed tours Toronto in eight parts JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Any Torontonian knows about such major attractions as the CN Tower, the Royal Ontario Museum and Casa Loma, but relatively few know about some of the city’s smaller, quirkier landmarks. Some of those are being exposed in Touring T.O., an eight-part minisitcom penned by Regent Park resident Shawn Ahmed and friend Scott Leaver. The pair were struggling to get their acting careers off the ground when they decided to create their own outlet. “We were looking for works we wanted to be in when we connected with Bell Local and found out they were looking for hyper-local content,” Ahmed said. “We pitched the
idea to them and they loved it.” The plot is simple: it follows two friends as they operate an only barely above board rickshaw touring company in the city. Ahmed plays Omar, an Indian citizen who is in Canada on a work visa while he searches for a girl with whom he had a brief tryst. Omar’s counterpart, Martin (played by Leaver), is on parole. They must keep their business running in order for Omar to remain in Canada and Martin to stay out of jail. “Scott and I are both fans of strong character-driven comedy that focus on the people who are driving the stories forward,” Ahmed said. “We have one total outsider and one character who’s lived in the city his whole life, but everything’s life and death.” Because Toronto is rife with tour-
ism companies, Omar and Martin decide their niche is in delving into the city’s bizarre stories, from the Christie Pits elephant to the history of the Waverley Hotel. “When we were throwing ideas around, we thought of two guys who work at Fort York as war recreationists and take their job very seriously,” Ahmed said. “From there, we went to the idea of two guys who go to obscure landmarks across the city. It was our way of showcasing the city we live in.” Touring T.O. is at once informational and absurd – mixed in with historical tidbits about the city is a plotline about a snake apocalypse the duo unwittingly unleash. While the show is relatively lowprofile thus far, it could become a staple, and not just in Toronto. “We’re looking at selling the show
and the format to cities all over the world,” Ahmed said. “It’s the kind of thing that could be transplanted anywhere.” Ahmed recently moved to the new Regent Park neighbourhood after bouncing around the city for much of his life. After growing up in Scarborough and then moving to the Annex, Queen’s Quay, midtown and Riverdale neighbourhoods, he hopes to settle in his new home. “I’m watching the old go down and the new come up right before my eyes,” he said. “There’s a stigma about condos in this city, but in Regent Park, they’ve done a great job of integrating the community all together.”

Still waiting for benefit of Tory’s Rolodex Questions One of the most resonant of the points hammered at by mayoral candidate John Tory was his belief Toronto could not solve its problems on its own. The federal and provincial government would need to “come to the table” and pay a significant share of the cost of public housing, public transportation and infrastructure improvement. It was hard to argue with that premise and also hard to be too skeptical of Tory’s boasts, that he, above all other candidates, had the capacity to draw reluctant premiers and prime ministers to that table. Tory has fostered a great deal of non-partisan goodwill, after all – particularly compared to his predecessor Rob Ford. One can’t say whether anyone else would have done much better. But Tory’s relationships so far have borne little fruit. Indeed, every time Toronto goes to the table with the
david nickle the city province it seems like Toronto gets saddled with the cheque. Like previous examples – the $86 million in housing pooling, the $75 million in LRT sunk costs – the latest imposition emerged during the 2015 budget process. It turns out that Toronto taxpayers owe nearly $100 million to Metrolinx for the Union Pearson Express rail project that Toronto property taxpayers understood themselves to have nothing to do with. It turns out that wasn’t the case, at all. When Metrolinx builds a rail line through a municipality and has to make upgrades and changes to municipal infrastructure, the cost of that work falls on the municipality. And there was a lot of infrastructure rejigging that needed to be done to that rail line – a rail line that’s pretty much
exclusively for the use of air travellers staying in or near downtown Toronto, and priced at $30 a ticket. Now, this charge didn’t magically appear as Tory took office; city staff have known for years there would be a reckoning. In the same way, it was the Ford-era council that decided to change directions on the Scarborough subway and toss away $75 million in sunk costs, and it was Ford whose bluster failed to convince the province to stick to its original schedule on the housing pooling fund. But by the same token, the magic Rolodex Tory promised to bring to the mayor’s office hasn’t been nearly as effective as originally advertised – at least when it comes to swaying the provincial government to take provincial action on matters important to the city.

remain with new sex ed curriculum As a retired teacher I have been most interested to hear about the new course for sex education. However, there has been no mention how this will be implemented with the present financial shortfall. Will teachers be taken out of their classes to attend courses for teaching these new aspects or will they merely be confronted with the new syllabus with instructions to “teach this”? Also who will be responsible for the teaching in high schools; the home room or phys-ed teacher? Will the students in elective programs be covered? There are still many questions to be answered and explained. Marian Yorke

Popular program is at capacity and looking to expand to satellite locations >>>from page 1 Teacher Oscar Betancourt (aka DJ Grouch) said the students are given basic instruction to begin with and then allowed to explore the world of DJ-ing in more depth as the class progresses. “They learn things like mixing and scratching, and as they get better at it, we get more technical with it and implement new things,” he said. The students and teachers all contribute to the music played and mixed throughout the classes. “We have music we bring to the class, but they can bring in their own music and work off their own playlist,” Betancourt said. For 11-year-old student Joel (MC Wander), the class has been a fun activity to engage in through the cold winter months. “It’s a lot of fun and I don’t want to have to leave (when the class ends,)” he said. “There’s no pressure – it’s just something we get to do that’s cool.” Joel’s brother Natnael (DJ Manchild), 13, also loves the class. to engage in music lessons focusing on the music they listen to on a regular basis. “It’s one of the classes where you can just be creative and play good music,” he said. While the classes are small in scale thus far – there is only enough equipment and time to allow five or six students in each of the hour-long sessions – RPSM is hoping to be able to expand it out to some of its satellite locations. Outside of Regent Park, RPSM operates out of Parkdale, Jane-Finch, Alexandra Park, Bridletown,
Malvern and other high-priority neighbourhoods. “This one’s really taken off with kids here,” Marsella said. “We’re at capacity now, but we’re looking to foster the program by getting in touch with DJs in other neighbourhoods.” Marsella added new equipment is costly, but not overly cost-prohibitive. “It’s really no different than buying violins for violin classes,” he said.

ven though frigid winter temperatures may be somewhat behind us, we’re not free of the winter snowflakes just yet. March has traditionally hosted some winter storms in the past which have crept up on us as we all look ahead to sunny days. It is still important to keep your wits about you. Sandra Zisckind, Diamond and Diamond Personal Injury Lawyers, provides some tips to prepare for a winter storm: 1. Pick up basic survival items – make sure to stock up essentials in order to survive without leaving your house for a few days, including: flashlights (and batteries), candles, radio, non-perishable food, bottled water, blankets and warm clothing, matches, medications, and fully-charged cell phone. 2. Keep warm – seal up any drafts, dress in layers, make sure to cover your head (hood or hat), cuddle up and stay under covers. 3. Stay up-to-date – keep the radio or television on to get the latest weather updates, follow national and local disaster agencies 4. Winterize your house – furnace maintenance (replace filters), check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, clear the fireplace, shut down outdoor faucets and
sprinkler systems, cut away tree branches that could damage your house, fix window and door leaks and clean the gutters. 5. Prepare for the worst – In the event of a power outage, make sure to: keep the fridge closed, put frozen items outside and have some fun activities ready to go (card games are always popular). In addition, the Government of Canada provides weather alerts that provide more information on dangerous conditions in all areas of Canada. Be sure to check them out on their website. Remember, heavy snowfall and freezing rain make for poor driving conditions. Even if the necessary precautions have been implemented, accidents do happen. EMS pays schools yearly visits School mulling over >>>from page 1 showing them where and how to press when administering CPR. The mannequins make a clicking sound to let students know they are pressing hard enough. Music was provided so students could learn the pace they should work at. Palmerston student Tobin Kravchenko, 12, was happy to learn CPR. “If I’m somewhere and someone falls down (in distress), this can help me find out what’s wrong with them and how to help in the situation, he said. The mannequins were part of CPR kits purchased from Toronto EMS using school council and fundraising dollars, with EMS volunteering their time to come out and teach students proper techniques. Kim McKinnon of Toronto EMS said the classes are available to all schools, but few have the mannequins on hand to take advantage of them. “It’s not taught in any curriculum, but it’s a real life-saving skill so we come and teach different classes when asked, she said. “We like to do this kind of outreach, particularly in February,

which is heart month. McKinnon noted the classes are available for students of any age, adding Toronto EMS typically offers the training to some 500 students across the TDSB every year. Palmerston Junior Public School principal Sharon James noted while Toronto EMS only comes to the school once a year, there are plenty of opportunities for students to learn
life-saving skills. “We have the (mannequin) kits in the library, so if families want to take them home, they can, she said. “No matter what age someone is, (CPR) is a good skill to know. For more information on how to purchase CPR kits complete with mannequins or to book a visit from Toronto EMS volunteers for CPR training, email ems@toronto.ca

Students at Winchester Junior and Senior Public School are set to move further into the digital age thanks to a generous donation by Future Shop. The school received a $20,000 grant as part of Future Shop’s Tech Lab project, which provides support to schools as they upgrade their technology. Winchester was one of 13 schools across Canada to receive the grant, which it earned through an application process. “Every year, we do this Tech Lab grant program, and this year over 300 schools across all of Canada applied for the grant, said Houman Javidnia of the Yonge-Dundas Future Shop location as he dropped a giant cheque off at the school. “There’s two things we all love (at Future Shop) – we love helping youth learn and we love technology. Winchester principal Rita Tsiotsikas already had an idea as to where the funds would go. With
two buildings – the main school site and a nearby heritage site – the school is in need of upgrades to its WiFi capabilities. “Right now, we need more wireless access points, whether it’s in this building or in our heritage building, she said. “If there’s any money left over – fingers crossed – we’ll look at what we can get in terms of laptops and tablets. Of course, the school’s students had their own ideas when it came to how to spend the money. Grade 4 student Simon Kingstone said he wanted more computers and iPads for students to use. “Usually in classes graded 3 and up, we have two iPads in each class but it would be good if we had more so everyone can use them, he said. Fellow Grade 4 student Max Wakabayashi noted computers and tablets have become invaluable educational aids for the students. Mayor Tory’s budget awaits council approval A budget committee plan to cut eight new planners from the 2015 budget was reversed at the city’s executive committee. But cuts to the city’s accountability officers remain as the budget moves to Toronto Council. Both sets of cuts came from a last-minute amendment by Scarborough Southwest Councillor Michelle Berardinetti as the budget committee finished dealing with the $10 billion budget. Berardinetti maintained that neither the planning department nor the ombudsman and integrity commissioner had made their case adequately for the additional staff. On Monday council reversed those cuts but did not deal with the accountability officers, at the request of Planning Committee Chair David Shiner. “I move this because the heritage conservation district studies and the other studies are so very important to make sure they’re completed,” said Shiner. He did so with Berardinetti’s cooperation, but she insisted to keep the cuts in place for 2015. “There’s changes that have occurred (in the offices),” said Berardinetti. “We felt that they could maintain staffing levels and that we could review (the requests) in the 2016 process.” The budget for 2015 otherwise went through unchanged, although councillors outside the Executive Committee criticized the decision to fill an $86 million hole by “borrowing” the money from the city’s capital investments rather than raising property taxes. “This is not a sustainable budget – the property tax increase is too low,” said Perks. “It’s a circle that can’t be squared.” Perks said the city will be facing new pressures in 2016: a need to implement its poverty reduction strategy, as well as costs for enhancements approved in the middle of 2015 that will have to be funded for a full year in 2016. But Mayor John Tory dismissed those worries. “We’ve got some hard work ahead but I reject the dark foreboding pictures of the situation we’re in for 2016,” said Tory, adding in his years watching city budgets from outside city hall, “there wasn’t one year where there weren’t predictions of imminent financial disasters. I think the days of these kinds of false choices should be over.” The budget now awaits approval when Toronto Council meets March 11.
