The organization builds play structures for children with lifethreatening illnesses at their homes. On Thursday, May 8, Million Dollar Smiles paired up with Keller Williams Referred Realty to build six new playgrounds, including one near Avenue Road and Lawrence Avenue for three-

year-old Madison Elmaleh. At nine months, Madison was diagnosed with Langerhans cell histiocytosis. Doctors found more than a dozen tumours spread throughout her body, and she underwent chemotherapy and other treatments. Her father Thierry Elmaleh said treatment, provided by

SickKids, has helped improve her health greatly and the new playground being installed in the family’s backyard would boost her spirits. “A couple of weeks ago, she was at a friend’s house and the friend had a play set like this,” he said as Million Dollar Smiles >>>FUNDRAISING, page 13

AN EXTREMELY DIVERSE RIDING, Toronto Centre has an estimated population of 130,323, and is bounded roughly by Lake Ontario to the south, Mount Pleasant Cemetery to the north, Yonge Street and Avenue Road to the west and the Don River to the east. It was created in 1999 as Toronto Centre-Rosedale then in 2007 the riding was abolished and redistributed mostly into Toronto Centre. Prior to 1999 the riding was held by the Progressive Conservative Party, but has since been a Ontario Liberal Party stronghold with Glen Murray currently sitting as MPP since the 2010 byelection.

■ We have to restore people’s trust in government. For the 10 years the McGuinty-Wynne Liberals have created massive debt by failing to control spending. They abused their power to advance their own party’s agenda. The people of Ontario deserve better. I want to see Ontario working at creating jobs that pay the rent or the mortgage. I want to see small businesses that will thrive and create more jobs, and make Ontario a “Have” province once again.

■ Access to an increasingly-overcrowded subway is a big problem, so expanding public transit is vital for all the residents of Toronto Centre. This can best be accomplished by uploading the responsibility to the provincial level of government. Tim Hudak and I are committed to building an East-West Express Line south of Bloor Street, which will relieve congestion on the existing lines and, in particular, enable downtown residents to get on the Yonge Line.

■ I have a practical understanding of the need for affordable housing through my involvement with the House of Compassion, a charitable organization providing secure, permanent housing for 21 socially-isolated persons who would otherwise be on the street, and through 12 years volunteering with Out of the Cold here in Toronto and this issue is a priority for me and for the people of downtown Toronto. Creating jobs and growing the tax base means support programs can stay in place. People don’t want a hand out. They want jobs and dignity.

■ I was educated here in Toronto and my academic background in agricultural economics, along with my business background in food commodities, developing small enterprises – including most recently a brewery – give me a good understanding of the conditions needed for sustained economic growth. My volunteer experience in helping the most vulnerable members of our community and the responsible stewardship of our natural heritage give me a good grounding in some of the important issues Ontario faces.

■ My number one issue is the merger of our publicly funded school boards. Many people don’t know the Catholic school board is publicly funded and we all pay. The misleading MPAC (Municipal Property Assessment Corporation) form where you tick off, which board you “support” is misleading and should be discontinued. It helps to perpetuate the myth that only Catholics pay for Catholic schools.

■ I would improve transit by allocating two per cent of the transportation budget to pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. I feel this would help to alleviate the strain on our transit system. I am in favour of revenue tools that include tolls and HOV lanes, dedicated bus lanes and the like that would make getting from Point A to B quicker and easier. I also support Land Value Taxation, which would be a good way to raise revenue for transit.

■ One of the most important things we can do with regards to housing is to raise the minimum wage and index it to inflation. I believe in a guaranteed annual income. It is abhorrent that in a province as rich as ours we have so many people living in poverty. A Green government would double the Ontario Child Benefit.

■ I am 46 and live in downtown Toronto with my family and work as a property manager at a downtown boutique condominium. I earned a diploma in advertising and public relations at St. Lawrence College. I am chair of the Bloor Street East Neighborhood Association and vicepresident of Metro Toronto Condo Corp. 1380 and am a member of the 519 Community Centre, Earthsharing Canada, Food Forward and Cycle Toronto. I am passionate about human rights, free speech and the environment.

■ Toronto Centre is a high growth and ever-changing community. I want to continue working to make transit investments so all of our residents can experience a higher quality of life.

■ I have been working on transit issues in Toronto-Centre since I was first elected in 2010. Our budget dedicated funding to the Downtown Relief Line and the East Bayfront LRT. These projects will have an immense impact on the quality of life of Toronto Centre residents.

■ We will continue to build affordable housing in Toronto Centre. We have already invested $46 million in Regent Park. The construction in the west Donlands will result in our next new development of affordable housing. After the (2015 PanAm/Parapan) Games, the Pan Am Village will be transformed into a blend of high-quality affordable housing, as well as market units.

■ I have worked hard all of my life to achieve healthy sustainable communities. I have worked in urban planning and community health in both the private and public sector. I live in Corktown with my partner Rick and our five-year-old rescue dog named Shadow.

■ This election is about fairness. It’s about making sure residents of Toronto Centre have access to the services and resources they need. The NDP has long supported access to quality, affordable, dental care for all Ontarians. We need to do this so we can improve the health of our children and of our communities. As your MPP, I will build support for this measure as one of my first priorities.

■ I use public transit and understand the need for quality, convenient transit. Previous governments have continually reduced provincial support for transit operating costs. While building transit infrastructure is important, sustainable funding for the TTC will improve service and reduce crowding by allowing the TTC to expand its routes and put more buses and streetcars on the road. As MPP for Toronto-Centre, I will work to restore funding for transit.

■ Affordable housing is an issue of increasing importance for young families. Not only do too few Ontarians have access to affordable public housing, the market cost of housing continues to increase so much so that the dream of home ownership is becoming increasingly unlikely. As a resident of Regent Park, I understand the importance of high-quality, mixed income housing for our community, and ensuring all Ontarians can live in safe and healthy neighbourhoods.

■ I am a practicing human rights lawyer at the Human Rights Legal Support Centre. I have worked hard representing students with disabilities, workers facing discrimination and Ontarians facing workplace harassment. My work for the lesbian gay bi trangender (LGBT) community has had a significant impact on human rights policy in Ontario. My partner and I were among the first families to move to market housing in Regent Park and we are committed to our culturally diverse, mixed income community.

Adam Vaughan’s decision raises question as to whether councillors should step down before running for other seats Good on Adam Vaughan for packing up his office. The former journalist and now former city councillor up and quit this week, after the writ dropped on the federal byelection in Trinity-Spadina. Vaughan will be running for the federal Liberals, to try and take the riding from the New Democratic Party following Olivia Chow’s departure, to run for mayor. Leaving aside whether Vaughan is the best person to go to Ottawa for the riding of Trinity-Spadina, his decision regarding his seat at city hall has made for one of the best departures from city hall in recent memory. Unlike representatives at other levels of government, Toronto councillors and mayors are under no obligation to vacate their seats when they choose to run, mid-term, for MP or MPP. They can even, during the campaign period, continue

david nickle the city to collect their full pay. If they lose, their old job is waiting for them. Councillor-candidates don’t have a great record on resisting those perks. Donation Raymond Cho, just now serving the residents of Scarborough-Rouge River while running for the provincial Progressive Conservatives, says he’ll be donating his councillor salary to charity for the length of the campaign, but is still collecting it. Doug Holyday, the city’s former deputy mayor, did forgo his salary when he ran in last summer’s Etobicoke-Lakeshore byelection for the Progressive Conservatives, but he didn’t stop being a councillor

Because really, an honest decision to move up cannot come without an honest decision to move on.

until he won. Peter Milczyn came back to Toronto council after having lost against Holyday, and is now getting ready to run again for the Liberals there. We could go on: Olivia Chow, Brad Duguid, Judy Sgro, Michael Prue, Bas Balkissoon, Jack Layton... they all took advantage of a system that allows ambitious politicians to maintain both their base and safety net as they make the jump to federal and provincial politics. You can’t blame them for doing so, given how the rules are. The question that Vaughan’s decision raises,

again, is: should the rules be changed? expectations Federal and provincial representatives seem to get by fine with more severe restrictions on their ambitions. When Chow decided to run for mayor of Toronto, she quit her job in Ottawa, as did Jim Karygiannis, when he decided to run for a seat on council in Scarborough-Agincourt. Legislation forced them to genuinely commit to seeking the new office, in a way that Toronto councillors need not. That is something that we should expect from any politician with ambitions. Because really, an honest decision to move up cannot come without an honest decision to move on.

Music competition is a real Stepping Stone JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Some of Canada’s top up-and-coming classical musicians will take the stage for a series of free performances as part of the biennial Stepping Stone music competition. The slate of 28 performers vying for the $10,000 grand prize includes downtown Toronto residents Matthew Li and Hezekiah Leung. Li, a pianist, previously competed in Stepping Stone in 2008 and made it through to the semifinals. This year marks his second – and last – shot at the award. “I missed the action last year and I’m too old next year because the age cutoff’s 28,” he said. “It’s a really great competition with all kinds of performers – pianists, violinists, cellists, everything.” Li started playing the piano at the age of five, part of growing up in a musical family. His father was a violin teacher and, he said, his mother wanted to have a pianist in the family. While he had a natural aptitude for playing, he acknowledged there were times when he was not exactly

eager to tinkle the ivories. “At first, I had kind of a love-hate relationship with the piano,” he said. “When you’re a kid and all your friends are playing outside, you have to be inside practicing.” Still, he stuck with it and is currently working toward a doctoral degree in music at the University of Toronto. He performs with the Toronto Messiaen Ensemble and played alongside his wife – also a pianist – at the last Nuit Blanche. Leung’s participation in this year’s Stepping Stone comes as a bit of a surprise, if only because he has only been playing his instrument, the viola, for about a year. Prior to that, he was a violinist and, while the skills he has learned over a lifetime of playing the violin largely translated to his new instrument, the fact that he was able to earn a spot in such a prestigious competition is impressive. “The viola’s one string lower – it has a C-string, but doesn’t have an E-string – and it’s obviously much bigger,” he said of the transition between instruments. “I was definitely attracted to the sound, though. It’s darker and warmer than the violin

and has an almost human-like quality.” A member of the NYX Orchestra, Leung admits the viola has a somewhat limited repertoire compared to many other instruments, but he loves it nonetheless. “There are a lot of amazing works, like Brahms’ E flat sonata, which was originally written for the clarinet, but has been transcribed for the viola,” he said. “There’s a lot of transcription to create pieces for the viola.” Leung started playing the violin at around six years of age, though he never thought it would turn into a career. He has found a great ensemble with NYX, however; three of the four members earned a spot in Stepping Stone. The performers will perform free concerts at U of T’s Edward Johnson Building, 80 Queen’s Park Crescent, from May 21 through 24. Leung will perform at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, May 22 and Li will take the stage at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 23, with semifinals on May 26 and the finals on May 29.

Scouts host annual Haliburton Club Breakfast The 43rd annual Haliburton C l u b Bre a k f a s t s e t f o r Thursday, May 22 in Toronto helps send young people to summer camp. Hosted by Scouts Canada Greater Toronto Council, this year’s breakfast takes place at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in the Canadian Room, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. The breakfast helps raise funds to provide safe, wellmaintained facilities for thousands of youth to enjoy at the

Haliburton Scout Reserve, or at the Woodland Trails facility, which provide summer activities for Scouts. Included in these programs are canoeing, boating, fishing, orienteering and nature study at the 5,000-acre Haliburton Scout Reserve. Scouts Canada strives to prevent having any youth turned away due to financial hardship. Thanks to funds raised at the breakfast, every Scouting youth has a chance

to visit these camps where dreams and memories are made. Guest speaker at the breakfast will be Brian Price, Olympic gold medal winner in 2008 as coxswain of the Canadian men’s eight rowing team. There are a variety of ticket options from entire tables to individual tickets.

Vaughan quits council for federal bid DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com

Adam Vaughan is quitting Toronto council to run as a Liberal in the Trinity-Spadina federal byelection. Vaughan, who has served as councillor for Ward 20 (TrinitySpadina) since 2006, said he’s not waiting to see whether he wins the June 30 byelection. As of the press deadline Tuesday, he was in the process of resigning his seat. “I’ve never believed, as a journalist or a councillor, with the entitlement that if you run for another level of government and fail, you get a job back in politics,” said Vaughan in an earlier interview. “If voters don’t elect you, voters don’t elect you.” Vaughan’s decision is unusual. Scarborough-Rouge River Councillor Raymond Cho

is running for the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party in that riding, and EtobicokeLakeshore Councillor Peter Milczyn is running for the provincial Liberals in his riding, but if they fail, they’ll be able to return to their seats (Cho has said he will donate his councillor’s salary to charity for the duration of the campaign). Olivia Chow, who vacated the Trinity-Spadina federal seat to run for mayor, drew sharp criticism from former councillor and deputy mayor Doug Holyday for keeping her seat on council when she ran for Trinity-Spadina for the New Democrats. But even Holyday didn’t resign his seat last summer when he successfully ran for the Progressive Conservatives in the Etobicoke-Lakeshore byelection. Vaughan said although he thought resigning was the “ethical” thing to do, he didn’t expect all of his colleagues to make the same choice. “I also appreciate the fact that not everyone who runs

from the private sector has to give up their jobs in a law firm or in a family business,” he said. “But if you’re a city councillor, you’re not entitled to the seat. You’ve earned the seat and if you choose to run for a political party... I think it’s the right thing to do. I don’t think I’m entitled to have it held for me if I fail.” Vaughan said further that if he did fail to win the byelection, he wouldn’t run for his old council seat in the 2014 municipal election. “I’ve decided to pursue a national housing program through an agenda for cities with (Liberal leader) Justin Trudeau,” he said. “I’m off to Ottawa to deliver housing for cities across the country. Done.” Toronto council will now have to appoint a caretaker councillor to look after Vaughan’s seat until the election. The city’s bylaws don’t allow the seat to remain vacant unless it becomes so 90 days before a municipal election.

Project restores sense of normalcy for kids >>>from page 1 volunteers and Keller Williams employees built an impressive structure in the family’s backyard. “She said ‘Daddy, I want one like this,’ so this will be great for her. Sometimes she still has to be in isolation at home and this will give her a chance to play on her own playground.” Million Dollar Smiles relies on fundraising, partnerships with companies and volunteers to build the playgrounds. Each play area is designed to cater to the child’s age and the backyard space available. Some kids get mock fire houses equipped with bells, while older children can receive trampolines or even iPads instead of a playground. “They can use (the iPads) to keep track of their needles and treatments,” said Heather Black of Million Dollar

Smiles. Volunteer Scott Leone helped with the build after his own daughter, Isabella, got a playground a couple of years ago. He said the new play set has helped restore a sense of normalcy to Isabella’s life after she was diagnosed with leukemia. “She just loves it,” he said. “She’ll have friends over and it doesn’t matter what age you are, if you’re there with her, you have to have a tea party.” Thankful for what the organization did for his family, Leone has stayed involved with Million Dollar Smiles ever since. Such stories are not uncommon, with beneficiaries often joining volunteer teams to show their gratitude. “You can just donate to a charity, but here you get to actually see the results of what you’re doing,” he said. “You

get to see the child when they see their playground for the first time.” May 8 marked Million Dollar Smiles’ first build of the year, with Keller Williams employees sponsoring and building all six playgrounds. Over the course of the summer, Million Dollar Smiles plans to build more than 30 playgrounds for sick children. Many of the kids who receive playgrounds are referred through Ontario Parents Advocating for C h i l d re n w i t h C a n c e r (OPACC). “We have to go looking for (families) sometimes because they’re so busy dealing with their children’s illnesses and everything that goes along with that,” Black said.

ANGELINA

My name is Angelina. I have been delivering the mirror and flyers since early 2009. I took the route for outside cardio exercise (it’s much more fun than doing cardio at the gym). The hours are flexible and rewarding which fits well with my regular work schedule. I always meet someone new from my neighborhood each time I go out to deliver. I am also happy that I am able to help provide my community with savings; everyone loves the coupons and free samples! When I have free time I enjoy cooking, working out and watching MMA/UFC. Congratulations to Angelina on being this month’s City Centre Mirror Carrier of the Month!
