MAKING THE THROW: North Toronto Norsemen Connor Mackay is forced out at second while Richview Saints Julian Giannone turns to make the double play during a provincial qualification tournament Thursday at Bond Park. North Toronto Collegiate lost 15-8.

Residents and clients at St. Stephen’s Community House in Kensington Market can now enjoy the benefits of an undulating blue wave, which will keep them cool and dry. The community hub, which offers youth, seniors, settlement, employment, housing and a host of other services, has long served the community’s most vulnerable residents. While the building’s interior serves a multitude of purposes, the exterior was sorely underutilized. “We want to have amenities for people outside – benches for seating, flowers – but the sun’s a bit unforgiving,” said St. Stephen’s Community House executive director Bill Sinclair. “At one of our meetings, one of our service users said we needed an umbrella or an awning out >>>ST. St. Stephen’s residents and clients are driving force behind design >>>from page 1 there so the space could be used.” With support from a private donor and the City of Toronto, the centre was able to install a new canopy, dubbed the Blue Wave. While local architecture firm Sustainable.TO was commissioned to implement the concept, St. Stephen’s residents and clients were the driving force behind the canopy’s design.

“We went to Sustainable. TO because they’re famous for involving people in their designs,” Sinclair said. What ensued was an eightweek mentorship program in which St. Stephen’s clients used physical and digital models to test out different options and visions before settling on the Blue Wave concept. Reginald Hamilton. “Now we have a place where we can sit down, relax and stay cool.” Hamilton said the creative process was truly collaborative, with participants each offering their own takes on what they would like to see. “There were a lot of ideas, and in the end we combined the best parts of all our ideas into the Blue Wave,” he said. Savannah Lavallee, who

uses St. Stephen’s’ youth services, said the ability to work with both physical and digital models made the entire process immersive and fun while catering to different skill sets. “Some people liked the 3D (digital) models, but I’m not good with computers so I worked best with the physical models.” Councillor Joe Cressy, who attended the Blue Wave’s offi-

cial unveiling ceremony on May 14 said the feature will serve as a great addition. “St. Stephen’s has a great street space, but it’s too hot during the day,” he said. “This will better serve the community and it really animates and brings new life to the street here.” For more information on St. Stephen’s Community House and the programs it offers, visit www.sschto.ca

Groove & Graffiti allows students to express themselves JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Central Technical School students have a new mural at the school’s Borden Street exit thanks to a special partnership with the TD Toronto Jazz Festival. The festival runs an outreach program dubbed Groove & Graffiti, which teaches students to translate the creative world of music into visual art. Toronto graffiti artists Mediah and Elicser led a two-day workshop with Central Tech’s Graffiti Club, the culmination of which was a 10-foot-by-40-foot mural just inside the school’s Borden Street doors. While the students were given free reign with their design, they were given some guidance when it came to themes. “We were asked to paint

something that applies to a problem we see in our school,” said Grade 10 Central Tech student Zachary Shillolo. “We all noticed that there are a lot of people walking around with their heads down, not looking at the world around them.” The design shows a trio of youngsters distracted by their phones or otherwise looking downward. They are painted in grey, while the background around them is a cornucopia of colour. For some of the students, the program served as a crash course in graffiti art. “I personally didn’t know much about graffiti, but I learned how to do lettering, characters and fill,” Shillolo said. “The hardest parts for me have been doing all the tight lines and trying to get the shading right. Luckily, we’re using spray paint, so if something doesn’t come out

just right, we can always do it again.” The Graffiti Club is run by a former Central Tech student who goes by the name Luvs 1. He said the art form allows students to expand their skill set. “There are a lot of basic elements that go into it, but it really shows students how to express themselves artistically through the lens of hip hop,” he said. He noted the club aims to highlight graffiti as something beyond the illegal tagging that gives the entire art form a bad rap. “I definitely don’t encourage anything illegal,” he said. “It’s about encouraging students to explore art.” Graffiti artist Elicser has been doing outreach to students for 11 years, and noted Toronto’s graffiti culture has grown immensely in that time.

Central Technical School Grade 10 student Zachary Shillolo helps create a mural at the school last Thursday.

He said it has become more mainstream, and while there is still some negative stigma that surrounds the art form, it is more commonly accepted as skilled and experienced art-

ists turn many buildings and walls in Toronto into personal canvases. “When it was just tagging, mothers wouldn’t allow their kids to get into this, but then

FROM CONCEPT

they see Banksy getting $1.6 million for one of his pieces and suddenly it’s good for little Petey to get into this,” he said. Elicser noted the growing acceptance of graffiti art is a double-edged sword. While he laments the fact it has become commercialized in many cases, with many corporations co-opting the art form in a bid to appeal to younger, more urban audience, he knows graffiti artists will adapt. “Graffiti started as a way to bomb the system,” he said. “Now we go inside the system and bomb it.” Groove & Graffiti is part of the TD Jazz Festival’s programming. The festival runs from June 18 to 29, with some 350 concerts taking place at 40 locations.

Caregivers are heroes, but they need support, too

ssuming the role of caregiver for a loved one may seem a natural decision when a friend or family member is struck with dementia, or acute or chronic health problems. But it can be a long, burdensome and isolated journey and those who make these sacrifices need to make sure they’re getting the supports they need. That’s why we at Metroland Media Toronto, in partnership with Downsizing Divas, are once again bringing The Caregiver Show to our city on May 30. Presented by Saint Elizabeth Health Care, which offers at-home services for family caregivers, the free show is a chance for caregivers to discover that they’re not alone. There’s a wealth of resources available to help make what can be a difficult job that much easier to undertake. According to the Alzheimer our view Society of Canada, the physical psychological toll on family May 30 show and caregivers is considerable – with dedicated to 15 to 32 per cent experiencing depression at one point or caregivers another. While people care for others out of a sense of personal responsibility and love, they need to be prepared to deal with the stress involved. At this year’s show, hear from speaker Teepa Snow, who has more than 33 years of experience in geriatrics, and is an occupational therapist currently working as a dementia care and dementia education specialist. Health and wellness expert Rose Reisman will also be speaking at the show about the importance of taking care of one’s own health and nutrition. The Caregiver Show is your chance to connect with others sharing similar circumstances and learn tips on how to navigate opportunities for government support. Discover that you’re not alone – in fact, you’re among almost eight million family caregivers in Canada. Get first-hand advice from experts, explore products and see demonstrations from our participating organizations. And don’t miss the Rest and Relaxation Zone, to help you replenish your spirit and energy levels. It takes a hero to dedicate oneself to the care of another, but even heroes need support sometimes. The show is Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Centennial College Progress Campus’ Athletics Wellness Centre, 941 Progress Ave. To register for the free event, visit www.caregivershow.ca

Gardiner debate must address costs The debate over the future of the Gardiner Expressway could turn out to be a very interesting discussion about the future of Toronto. It is odd that it should be: after all, we’re just talking about 1.7 kilometres or so of concrete, and the bit of roadway that is currently suffocating underneath. Toronto is so much more than the connection of two highways, and really, whether the city spends $900 million to rebuild the thing on a new configuration or about $400 million to rip it all down doesn’t make for a hill of beans in Scarborough or Etobicoke or North York. It is not a big part of the city. But it has become a big part of the debate about the city all the same, and when Toronto politicians start to talk about it… it gets emotional. Indeed, it got so emotional last week that when Toronto’s public works and infrastructure committee was faced with making a

david nickle the city proper recommendation on the matter, it threw up its hands and left it all to council. Mayor John Tory is going into that council meeting intending to support the ‘hybrid’ option of essentially shifting and rebuilding the ramps between the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway. It is costly, and doesn’t confer as many city-building advantages, but it appeals to many of the voters who might leave their mark next to pro-car Rob Ford’s name next election. And there are enough of those voters across the city that it’s likely a majority of councillors will lean toward the more expensive project. But the matter of the cost is the thing, and it might be quite the thing. York Centre Councillor James Pasternak, who sits

on the city’s budget committee, is a supporter of the hybrid option, but at the May 19 meeting of that committee, he made it clear he wasn’t about to support it without a way to pay. And the best way to pay? Road tolls, he said, preferably collected in such a way that it gave Toronto taxpayers a break. Well. If there is any issue more historically emotional than the question of the continued elevation of the Gardiner Expressway, it is the terrifying prospect of Hwy. 407-style road tolls on highways running through the heart of the city. Even when they haven’t been an issue – as in the 2003 mayoral race when John Tory (then a candidate) accused David Miller (soon to be the mayor) of favouring tolls on city highways – they’ve been a preoccupying issue. Miller spent a great deal of energy then and in the months and years afterward distancing himself from the

road-toll option for paying for city infrastructure. The city considered imposing tolls in 2008, and eventually rejected the idea because a full, regional-tolling system that included the 401, DVP and 427 would have been prohibitively expensive to set up. And indeed, this would likely remain the case. But Pasternak raises an interesting issue, as council moves to consider yet another billion-dollar-orso infrastructure project resting on the same old revenue streams as before: namely, if Torontonians want to start living larger, or simply according to their needs, then money is going to have to come from somewhere beyond simple savings. And sooner or later, Toronto Council is going to have to start talking about what that might look like.

Dozen residents are featured in artwork >>>from page 1 at a launch event for both the panels in Regent Park and an associated art project in Daniels Spectrum. “Usually, when you see large portraits in public – on billboards, for instance – it has to do with advertising and not the regular people you see in the community every day.” For subject Jacob Sukhra, 11, having his face out there in Regent Park has been a fun experience. Less than a day after the installation went up, he heard from friends, classmates and family members who saw his picture in the park. “I like getting compliments and it’s cool to know my face will be there forever,” he said. “It’s a really nice project and it was fun to do.” Faces of Regent Park highlights 12 residents, which Bergeron photographed before applying patterns and textures to their faces. Those colourful patterns bring an added vibrancy to the works. Graffiti tags that

Bergeron spotted in Regent Park have also been incorporated into the panels. “These people are like the gatekeepers to the neighbourhood, and the tags are from Regent Park as well,” the artist said. “Markmaking like (tagging) gives a sense of energy here. It’s all about the people living, working and moving around the space.” Bergeron said capturing the essence of a neighbourhood as diverse as Regent Park posed a challenge. He had many subjects volunteer to be part of the project and had to pick and choose which to profile. “I wanted it to be diverse, but I didn’t want to go with an exact breakdown,” he said. “I didn’t want to say ‘I want to pick this one, but I already have someone from

diversity

this background.’” In the end, he went with gut instinct while also making a point of including a wide cross-section of cultures and ages. Fellow subject Ines Garcia was so touched when she saw her portrait, which features the names of her children, that she burst out crying. “I’m so happy with it and I think it’s a really unique way to look at the people in Regent Park,” she said. “People who walk by who know (the subjects) will feel closer to the neighbourhood.” In addition to the six large double-sided panels in Regent Park, distressed wood panels featuring Bergeron’s Faces of Regent Park will be on display in Daniels Spectrum at 585 Dundas St. E. until June 24 as part of the Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival.

Trek for Teens Day supports homeless youth Special fun fair set for Saturday JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Hundreds of teens from across the Greater Toronto Area are getting set to take part in an Amazing Racestyle challenge through the streets of downtown Toronto to raise awareness for homeless youth. The event, hosted by the Trek for Teens Foundation, will see teams of youth take on a variety of challenges in the city. It will start and end at Nathan Phillips Square, which will be home to a special fun fair. Trek for Teens was founded by University of Toronto grad Michael Bazzocchi, who wanted to give teens a chance to make a difference in the city while pursuing their passions. “It’s essentially a not-forprofit that raises funds and awareness for homeless youth

The joust is one of many events taking place during Trek for Teens at Nathan Phillips Square.

by encouraging young people to use their talents in things like music, fashion, athletics and dance,” he said. For the race portion of Trek for Teens Day, participants will be given a “passport” they will have to get stamped at various locations throughout the downtown core. To earn stamps, they will have to complete specifics tasks. “At one place, they might have to go through a labyrinth, at another they have

to build a makeshift shelter, or do a song and dance,” Bazzocchi said. Participants will be asked to collect pledges in order to participate, with funds raised going toward charitable organizations such as Covenant House, Horizons for Youth, and Youth Without Shelter. Since its inception in 2007, the organization has brought in some $25,000 for those groups. While the race is geared

toward teens aged 13 to 19, the fair at Nathan Phillips Square will provide challenges for younger kids in the 12-to14-year-old age bracket. The fair will also feature bouncy castles, karaoke, jousting platforms, food vendors, information booths and more. The event will culminate in a concert featuring local talent in front of City Hall. “We have eight different youth bands who have won preliminary competitions for a chance to perform on the stage,” Bazzocchi said. “It’s the best of the best of Toronto’s youth talent.” T h i s y e a r’s e v e n t i s expected to bring out some 300 youth, and Bazzocchi hopes it becomes the biggest and most successful Trek for Teens Day to date. Trek for Teens Day 2015 will take place at Nathan Phillips Square from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 23.

Steam Whistle Brewery turns 15 in historic Roundhouse While it may not have reached the legal drinking age itself – it falls four years shy of that goal – Steam Whistle Brewery has poured plenty of pilsners for its legion of fans. The brewery is set to celebrate 15 years in the historic Roundhouse building on Bremner Boulevard, the location it has called home since it produced its first case on March 22, 2000. Two months to the day after it started shipping to Beer Store locations, Steam Whistle opened its on-site retail store at the Roundhouse. Steam Whistle’s origins are decidedly unglamorous – its founders, Greg Taylor, Cam Heaps and Greg Cromwell came up with the concept while on a camping trip after they were laid off from the Upper Canada Brewing Company after it was bought out. At first, they toyed with the idea of calling themselves Three Fired Guys Brewing as a tongue-in-cheek homage to the company’s roots. “We incorporated the idea into a business and we actually got financing based on that, and then

we decided it has a bit of a negative connotation, it may be confusing for people, and that’s when we came across the name of Steam Whistle Brewery,” said Taylor. “We thought ‘hey, we’re going to have a retro theme, age of innocence... if we put a steam whistle on top of the brewery and we blew it off, people would see that, hear that and think it’s time for a nice cold pilsner.’” While most breweries start with one offering and then branch out to new tastes, Steam Whistle has never taken that second step. It has offered only one beer – its famous pilsner – since it opened. That, Taylor said, was completely by design. “We learned earlier in our experience in craft beer in particular, if we really wanted to get it right, if we wanted to become pilsner experts, it made a lot of sense to focus on just doing that,” Taylor said. “Pilsner is the most difficult style of beer to perfect and so we decided it was going to take a real commitment on our behalf.” Given its straightforward, clean and crisp taste, he noted, meant it would be virtually impossible to hide defects. Once Steam Whistle found the right recipe and bal-

We like to call it our cathedral of beer and that’s important because customers want to go to breweries and tour them. – Greg Taylor

ance, all its energy went into ensuring it remained consistent. To that end, the “fired guys” brought in master brewer Marek Mikunda, formerly of Pilsner Urquell, in 2006. Mikunda has his hands full ensuring each batch lives up to the brewery’s exacting standards. The beer consists of but a few simple ingredients – three

types of hops that are imported from Europe, yeast, barley malt and spring water. That recipe has remained the same since it first opened in the historic Roundhouse building. Steam Whistle took over the site and went to great pains to add its equipment to the former rail yard while maintaining the heritage site’s vintage exterior and the main bones of its interior. “We like to call it our cathedral of beer and that’s important because customers want to go to breweries and tour them,” Taylor said. “There’s some magic to that, like there is with a chocolate factory.” The site now offers tours of its facilities seven days a week. It also features an entertainment venue where it hosts events and performances by local acts, as well

as space for local visual artists to hold exhibits. “We do our monthly art show which features local artists in the retail store and we also have our independent music series called Unsigned, and that supports Canadian artists that are looking for a step up,” Taylor said. Steam Whistle Brewing now produces roughly 80,000 bottles a day of its pilsner, with each batch aged seven days with yeast and then three weeks without. Its motto, “do one thing really, really well” has guided it to numerous award wins and helped the brand grow. Its home site has also earned it accolades – Steam Whistle Brewing has been named Canada’s greenest brewery, and its tours have been listed as number two on TripAdvisor.com’s list of things to do in Toronto. To celebrate its first 15 years, Steam Whistle is getting set to host an anniversary party at the Roundhouse, 255 Bremner Blvd., from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow.

and Biphobia. Anne Creighton, President of PFLAG, was also marking a first: her first PFLAG flag raising ceremony since taking office. She took the opportunity to welcome Tory and express gratitude for his support. “We are very thankful to have an ally in our new Mayor, who has already

shown to be a strong advocate for a more inclusive and safer city,” she said. To r y m a d e i t c l e a r Toronto is a city of allies. “We all know and love someone who is a member of the LGBTQ community and our role as allies is important,” he said. “I know I speak for my colleagues when I say you have allies in the mayor, in the members of this council, and I believe in the good people of Toronto as well.” Wong-Tam, who represents Toronto CentreRosedale and has been a longtime advocate of the LGBTQ community, offered sobering statistics. “We have so much work to do,” she said. “Inter national Day Against Homophobia, Tr a n s p h o b i a a n d Biphobia has meaning when 33 per cent of youth suicides are com-

mitted by GLBTQ youth, when we have about 50 per cent of the young people on streets are LGBTQ identified. What it says is we’re not there yet. It is still unsafe to come out to your family, to your place of worship, and your school.” Referring to her lesbian daughter, Creighton used part of her address to come out in favour of the new provincial sex education curriculum. “I am not one of the parents upset with the new sex ed curriculum,” said Creighton. “For kids who are different, it legitimizes the difference and declares it to be natural. What a gift to the children. How great for that child to know they are not alone. For sure kids have questions, and now they will get answers.”

Liberal MPPs in Toronto have a choice: Protect the people of Toronto from even higher hydro bills – by voting against Bill 91

OR

Fall in line with the sellout of Hydro One – a one-time dead-end cash grab at the expense of future generations.

Important message to members and supporters of the Ontario Liberal Party: Even partial privatization has brought soaring electricity rates in countries around the world. Small business owners, farmers and residents cannot afford to pay more for electricity. Future generations will need the perpetual flow of hundreds of millions of dollars from our public Hydro One — to pay for public services like health care and education. If Bill 91 is passed, Liberal MPPs, the Ontario Liberal Party and Premier Wynne will be held responsible for the consequences.

TELL PREMIER KATHLEEN WYNNE TO WITHDRAW BILL 91

There are many reasons to keep Hydro One in public hands. Visit www.cupe.on.ca for more information.
