Doors Open DOUBLE PLAY on weekend Some of Toronto’s off-limits architectural gems, historic sites and off-beat buildings will welcome the public inside this weekend for Doors Open Toronto 2015. The 16th annual Doors Open, presented by Great Gulf, will have a sports, recreation and leisure theme, though the buildings on display will cater to a far wider array of interests. Some 155 buildings have signed up to be part of the event, including many in the midtown and downtown areas. Buildings on display include the Masonic Temple, TIFF Bell Lightbox, John St. Roundhouse and Toronto Railway Museum, MaRS Discovery District, Toronto Police Marine Unit and more. In addition to the buildings on display, the University of Toronto will conduct walking tours in neighbourhoods throughout the city, including tours of the university itself, the waterfront, Toronto Islands and other areas. There will also be a speaker series with events highlighting housing and public space, special programs including a kids’ soccer workshop, architecture studio tour, dance program and more. Doors Open Toronto 2015 will take place on Saturday and Sunday with times varying by location. For more information, including a map of all Doors Open buildings, visit www. toronto.ca/doorsopen

Residents and clients at St. Stephen’s Community House in Kensington Market can now enjoy the benefits of an undulating blue wave, which will keep them cool and dry. The community hub, which offers youth, seniors, settlement, employment, housing and a host of other services, has long served the community’s most vulnerable residents. While the building’s interior serves a multitude of purposes, the exterior was sorely underutilized. “We want to have amenities for people outside – benches for seating, flowers – but the sun’s a bit unforgiving,” said St. Stephen’s Community House executive director Bill Sinclair. “At one of our meetings, one of our service users said we needed an umbrella or an awning out >>>ST. Regent Park artwork features local faces JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com The road into Regent Park is now a little more welcoming with the addition of a series of

portraits of those who call the neighbourhood home. Artist Dan Bergeron created the portrait series, dubbed Faces of Regent Park, installing them in the new park across

from Daniels Spectrum late last week. The large laminate glass pieces features mixed-media portraits of a dozen Regent Park residents, highlighting the community’s diversity.
