With work on Phase Two of the ongoing Regent Park revitalization well underway, Toronto Community Housing (TCH) held a special ceremony to mark the beginning of Phase Three. The event, held at the Regent Park South Rink, saw the taking down of a wall at a derelict building, which will eventually be the site of new housing. With the announcement of the start of Phase Three came some welcome news for residents – a promise that work on the remaining buildings in the revitalization would be quicker, allowing residents to move into their new homes faster. “We are aware that our pace of construction of new replacement homes has slowed...,” said TCH interim president and CEO Greg Spearn. “We are making every effort going forward with our new (business) model in Phase Three to ensure that we deliver one new replacement building every year until all homes are replaced.” That will amount to 900 new replacement homes over the next four years. “This will mean (residents) will be able to return much sooner and residents in future phases will be relocated within >>>MLSE, page 16

With many kids more likely to sit glued to screens than run around outside, and with healthy, balanced meals often replaced by quick and easy alternatives, SickKids Hospital is pooling its resources – and others – to help come up with a comprehensive look at healthy living. The hospital’s new Centre for Healthy Active Kids (CHAK), an online hub, brings together pediatricians, dieticians, social workers, psychologists and other health care professionals to look holistically at children’s health. Headed up by midtown Toronto’s Dr. Jill Hamilton, the centre places a high priority on childhood obesity. “It’s about healthy nutrition and wellness, but it’s not just looking at a couple of factors,” she said. “It looks at how a child’s environment affects these things.” The need for a centre, such as CHAK, has never been greater given rising rates of obesity and changing life-

styles. Studies suggest one in three children are now obese, which leads to other health issues. “Type 2 diabetes in children never really even occurred 30 years ago,” Hamilton said, noting the incidence of the disease is on the rise. “Children who get Type 2 diabetes at a young age are much more likely to have a shortened life span as a result.” Hamilton, an endocrinologist, noted the age-old mantra of “eat less, exercise more” is not enough in ensuring kids stay healthy. Factors as diverse as genetics, the changing role of technology in children’s lives, stress and sleep patterns all contribute to obesity. By fostering a greater understanding of the root causes, she hopes to promote healthier lifestyles. “Some people say ‘if I exercise more, I don’t see my weight change,’ but that doesn’t mean it’s not good to exercise,” she said. “The benefits of healthy nutrition and physical activity have been shown to have benefits beyond weight.”

While CHAK has a strong research component, serving as a hub where child care professionals can come to learn the latest scientific findings and parents and kids can get guidance as well. “It’s important that there’s a strong educational component because the Internet’s littered with all kinds of advice on this topic, some good and some not so good,” Hamilton said. “It can be confusing for parents who want to know how they can get their child eating healthy or what to do if they’re worried about their child’s weight.” Educating health care professionals is just as important, she added, as many doctors do not have specific training in terms of healthy lifestyles for kids. CHAK also takes into account that different families have different habits, which makes a one-size-fits-all approach to childhood obesity even less workable. Hospital helps girl born with severe club foot JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com When Leslie Gottlieb was pregnant, she knew she was having twins and she knew at least one of them was going to be born with a birth defect. What she did not know was what that defect would be or how to prepare for it. “ When you’re having twins, you can’t run normal tests or you could risk harming the other baby,” she said. “All we knew was that there was crowding in the uterus because I was having twins. We had to wait and see what the diagnosis was.” She gave birth to her girls, Ava and Tessa, and discovered Ava had a club foot, a congenital condition in which the tissues connecting muscle to bone are shorter than normal. “She was totally healthy and normal except she had a twisted foot,” Gottlieb recalled.

Ava began undergoing treatment immediately, with procedures including surgery to sever her Achilles tendon, placing her foot in a cast and having Ava wear “boots and bar” – baby boots with a bar attaching them to keep the feet aligned. Having Ava’s foot twisted into place and placed in a cast is an old technique for a club foot, but Dr. Unni Narayanan opted to take that road when other treatments did not work. Ava began having her leg placed in a cast at three months, and doctors would soak the cast off, twist the foot back into position and re-cast it on a weekly basis. Despite all she has endured, Ava has not let her condition dampen her spirit. The soft-spoken youngster acknowledges she has to take more care than most. “Definitely, when I wake up, I’m a little tippy-toed and I go slow down the stairs,” the nine-year-old said. That pales in comparison

The most painful I can remember is having a few people in the (hospital) room and they would bend my foot before they put the cast on. – Ava Gottlieb

to what she has endured, however. “The most painful I can remember is having a few people in the (hospital) room and they would bend my foot

before they put the cast on,” she said. “I remember a lot of sweating. And the boots and bar – oh yeah, that was uncomfortable.” Ava still undergoes treatment, though it is far less frequent than it was earlier in her life. She is supposed to wear a brace, though her physiology is such that doing so is uncomfortable. The brace is designed to keep her foot aligned, but her body naturally wants to return the foot to the position it was in when she was born. “I haven’t been wearing (the brace) because it

doesn’t feel right anymore,” Ava said. Her condition has improved, however, to the point where she can run around in gym class, play soccer for fun and even try out for her school’s crosscountry running team. She will have to continue to receive treatment at least until she stops growing, and Gottlieb said her daughter will likely require another surgery to correct the foot once again. “As long as a kid’s growing, the foot can go back to the way it was, and Ava was born with a severe case,” said the mother. “Right now, nobody’s quite sure what the prognosis is.” Throughout her childhood, she has had twin sister Tessa by her side. The family went to appointments together. “It was sometimes really annoying,” she admitted of the long waits while her sister received care at SickKids.

Fortunately for both girls, the hospital has plenty to keep children – whether they are patients or loved ones – busy. The girls spoke of rooms with toys, televisions tuned to children’s stations and video games to ensure the atmosphere was more positive than gloomy. Ava’s natural disposition has also made the years of treatment easier on the family. “One of the things I find so remarkable is that it hasn’t been an easy road, but she doesn’t complain,” Gottlieb said. The midtown Toronto family is thankful for the care Ava has received at SickKids. “We wouldn’t have had this care if we lived in a different country,” Gottlieb said. “We’re so lucky to have a hospital like this here.” For more Healthy and Happy stories visit us online http://bit.ly/SeO3ai

Summit for SickKids gets ready to tackle Mt. Kilimanjaro ALI RAZA ccm@insidetoronto.com Could you run a marathon while breathing through a straw? That’s comparable to mountain climbing according to Yonge and St. Clair residents Hart Togman and Adam McClare. The climbers are joined by Patrick Jordan and Gavin Gillespie this year to scale Africa’s highest mountain, Mt. Kilimanjaro. They aim to raise money for the Oncology Department and Cancer Genetics Research Program at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).

As part of their charity, Summit for SickKids, McClare and Togman hosted a fundraiser gala called ‘A Night At The Summit’ at The Courthouse on Adelaide St. on May 9. With a raffle, a silent auction and live entertainment, the turnout was successful. “This is the single largest fundraising effort we do,” McClare said. “It’s the prelude to the climb. We start our climb at Mt. Kilimanjaro on July 19.” The two climbers started the fundraising climb four years ago. Having dealt with cancer in their families,

McClare met with Togman and they decided to start a charity. In an attempt to find a unique way to help, they thought of nature. “We wanted to do something unique,” Togman said. “We decided to combine our passion for the outdoors with this charity and we thought let’s climb a mountain, let’s get people noticing what we’re doing.” “Last year we raised $52,000 for the cause.” And last year’s mountain was not forgiving. the World’s Seven Summits (the seven continents’ highest mountains) along with

Mt. Kilimanjaro. Nestled in the Andes mountain range, it is the highest mountain in both the western and southern hemispheres. “It took us about 17-18 days to climb,” Togman said. “We got to high camp (approx. 19,000 ft.) and then we got snowed out, so we didn’t make it to the peak.” Nevertheless, Togman said it’s about the money and striving to raise more. At an ultimate goal of $250,000, the climbers continue their efforts to hit the target with successive, growing climbs. “It started off with the two of us and we’ve grown by one

climber each year,” McClare said. “Last year Patrick Jordan joined us for our climb on Mt. Aconcagua and this year Gavin Gillespie is joining us for Kilimanjaro.” The fundraiser presented performances by Toronto comic Trixx and music performers Hands and Teeth. The night’s fundraising goal was $20,000 and with the help of personal donors and sponsorships, McClare and Togman are climbing towards the year’s goal of $100,000. Growing healthier children now will save grief later in life

Write us

C

anadians believe our youth do not have a healthy lifestyle. We are twice as concerned about obesity in our youth than any other health risk. That says a lot about the physical conditioning of our youth. But it also says there is hope for our youth – if we heed the warning signs and act now. It’s Healthy and Happy Month (healthyandhappy. com) at The Hospital for Sick Children and this year the theme is centered around prevention of youth health issues. Growing healthier children now will save much grief later in life when they become unhealthy adults falling victim to many of the bad decisions made when young. And all of this is increasingly taxing on the healthcare system – overburdened and underfunded given increasing demands. The hospital – affectionately our view known as SickKids – conducted a survey, and here’s an example of Help our what they found. • 56 per cent said society must kids become do everything it can to improve healthy the lifestyle of today’s children. • Bullying, obesity, child abuse, alcohol/drug abuse, suicide, depression all rank high in the minds of Canadians. • 78 per cent say children today are getting less exercise compared to their own childhood. • 65 per cent say children today have poorer eating habits. • 59 per cent say children are receiving less nutritional value in what they eat. • Mental illness is the second most concerning illness among young people. Add to the fact that UNICEF ranks Canada 27th out of 29 industrialized nations on obesity. When that stat was shared, 21 per cent of Canadians said it motivated them to personal action. That would amount to a significant amount of action, but it’s not enough. We hope through the stories you read in today’s themed edition and the stories you read online at http://bit.ly/SeO3ai or www.citycentremirror.com, you will be motivated to help preserve the health of young people who are part of your world. This may be the first generation of Canadians who do not live as long as their parents. That’s a hard concept to accept in a society where we generally are able to control many of the threats to our children’s health. We must not let that happen.

Doug Ford not the only one offering poisonous sentiments on the Griffin Centre issue Whilst his brother cavorts about cottage country on day passes from addiction rehabilitation, it’s reassuring to see that Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford is keeping up the Ford name and all it stands for here in the city. As the Etobicoke Guardian’s Tamara Shephard reported last week, Doug Ford showed up – late – for a meeting at Toronto police’s 23 Division to take on the Griffin Centre, a home for developmentally disabled youth on behalf of its angry neighbours. According to Shephard’s report, Ford told the staff of the centre that they had “ruined the community” in the Kipling Avenue and West Humber Boulevard area. The two-month-old centre is a house, where four youth – some with autism – live under super-

david nickle the city vision. Some of the youth have behavioural issues that manifest in outbursts sometimes requiring police to attend. The staff at the centre sometimes park on the street. Sometimes, the youth who live in the centre are permitted outdoors. It was this last point that seemed to shock Ford: “You can’t destroy a community like this. People have worked 30 years for their home... My heart goes out to kids with autism. But no one told me they’d be leaving the house. If it comes down to it, I’ll buy the house myself and resell it.” Later, he asked if any of the children were sex offenders (for the record:

staff at the centre said none of them are). It’s difficult to know what to say about Doug Ford and his mayorbrother Rob anymore. They have so debased the public discourse in the past year, that even when one of them passes an evening stirring up an angry crowd to run a house for disabled youth out of town, it’s hard to properly admonish him. But let’s leave Doug alone a moment, and ponder some of the other comments that Shephard collected last Thursday night from those in attendance. “This is not a place for mental people. This is a residential area. Why don’t you build a house out on a farm?” “When my child says, ‘Mommy, why are there police here again?’ What do I say?”

“This is a community for people, not for that.” Councillor Ford’s remarks ride the crest of that wave of unfortunate NIMBY-ism – and one might argue that his and his brother’s reign at Toronto City Hall these past three and a half years were propelled by the same poisonous sentiment. In October, odds are good that voters from most of Toronto will send the brothers Ford from Toronto City Hall – probably for good. But the insular, fearful, uncompassionate and fundamentally selfish sentiment on display at 23 Division last week – the sentiment that allowed the Fords in to begin with – it will take a great many years to rid ourselves of that.

Father takes it to the limit for SickKids JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com When his son Matthew was born with a rare genetic disorder that causes his body to produce excess skin, Brian Culbert had no idea it would be the start of a long-standing relationship with the Hospital for Sick Children. Matthew, now 14, was born with epidermolytic hyperkeratosis, and the skin his body continually produces is prone to cracking and breaking. “I’m missing a layer of skin, so my body thinks I’m constantly injured and keeps producing more skin to help me heal,” he said. Given Matthew’s condition and the fact he was born premature, doctors were unsure Matthew would survive. He was placed in strict isolation – with a couple of notable exceptions. “One of things the doctor said, and it was a very unconventional approach, was that the highest probably that

Matthew would survive would be if we (his parents) kept constant contact with him,” Brian said. “We didn’t leave the hospital for 12 days – we slept in waiting rooms, and at night they would lock the door and wheel a bed in.” The care Matthew received, and the accommodating way in which SickKids staff treated the family, left Brian determined to give back to the hospital. He was determined, however, to do more than simply write a cheque to the hospital’s foundation. “Around that time, I was going through a mid-life crisis where I felt I needed to focus on something more than just work,” he said. “I heard about a bike race that was 24 hours long and I thought it was just the right amount of crazy.” He raised pledges for the ride, the first of a number of physical tests, in which he pushed his body to its limit. He spent years as a professional cyclist, but gave up the career due to age and accu-

mulated injuries. Neither age nor injuries, however, have dampened his enthusiasm for feats of endurance. “As part of my recovery from an injury, I thought I would do running and did a run when you run the length of the Bruce trail over six days,” he said. “That helped me raise $125,000.” He has also competed in

the Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc, a gruelling 168-kilometre race through mountainous terrain that takes roughly two days of non-stop running to complete. “It’s the equivalent of running 100 miles and running up and down (Mount) Everest,” he said. “The worst part isn’t even the running, it’s the conditions.”

The run was so exhausting, he actually passed out six kilometres from the finish line and was found surrounded by mountain goats, next to a 2,000-foot drop. He had spent most of the run either passing or being passed by a fellow runner, who he recalled running with him to the finish line. “When I asked where he was after the race, they told me ‘oh, he finished two hours after you,’” Brian said. “So for the last six kilometres, I had a great conversation with someone who wasn’t even there.” Through his efforts, he has raised close to $700,000 for various causes, with the lion’s share of that money going to SickKids. He is part of the SickKids Innovators program, which sees philanthropists raise funds for high priority programs through whatever means they choose. He noted he feels incredibly fortunate to have had the help and support of SickKids when Matthew was born, with the

Culberts now virtually a part of the extended hospital family. While there is no cure for epidermolytic hyperkeratosis, Matthew has not let it slow him down. He attends school at Royal St. George’s College and plays baseball, badminton and hockey while also honing his skills in judo and golf. His crowning achievement came when he scored the winning shootout goal in a Lawrence Park Athletic Association playoff hockey game, and he hopes to someday become a professional golfer. Brian said his son serves as a constant inspiration to him, refusing to have anything but a normal life despite a condition that some might use as an excuse. “As a dad, I’m obviously incredibly proud of him,” he said. “He’s a better athlete than I could ever be.” To learn more about SickKids innovators, visit bit.ly/1oPggSy

Toronto’s waterfront gets ready for Gangways Open JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com As significant buildings across the city prepare to welcome the public for the annual Doors Open Toronto event, visitors to Toronto’s waterfront will be treated to special tours of some of the city’s oldest ships. Gangways Open, part of Doors Open, will allow the public to step on board the historic PS Trillium paddle steamer, the William Lyon Mackenzie Fireboat and others. The event will also feature presentations by historian Mike Filey, live performances by the Toronto firefighters’ band Firesound, interactions with pirates and much more. “This is our version of the city’s Doors Open and it features access to all the private ships docked along the water’s edge,” said Waterfront BIA executive director Carol Jolly. The highlight of the event may very well be tours of the PS Trillium, a steam-powered boat first built in 1910. “It served alongside its sister ship Bluebell but became a little too old-fashioned,” Filey said, noting both boats were replaced by diesel-powered ferries. “People can come on board and see the engine turning over, and kids can see how it works for themselves.” The PS Trillium is the last side wheeler paddle steamer in operation in North America, though it is currently used only sparingly to transport

people to Toronto Island when crowds are too large for the regular ferries to accommodate. That it is even still around, however, is somewhat surprising. It was taken out of service in the 1950s, and while the Bluebell was demolished at that time, the PS Trillium was hidden away on the island. Tours of the William Lyon Mackenzie Fireboat coincide with the vessel’s 50th anniversary. “There’s a party for its anniversary on the 23rd (the day before Gangways Open begins) and there’s an interesting history of how the city got the boat in the first place,” Filey said. “Back when it first started up, people said this was a city that would never have a fire on the waterfront.” Gangways Open will also mark the re-launch of the popular Toronto on the Water Art Exhibit, which will be shown

in the Queen’s Quay Terminal and will remain there until July 31. “We have 135 archival images that we’ve blown up to 24 inches by 36 inches and each one has a little bit of the history of the waterfront in it,” Jolly said. “The pictures help people understand the history of the neighbourhood as it went up.” One popular image depicts the famous “jumping horses,” which were led up a 50-foot tall ramp before diving into Lake Ontario. “You would never see something like that today,” Jolly said. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25. For a full schedule of events taking place for Gangways Open, visit www. waterfrontbia.com

SickKids provides leadership in many programs aimed at creating a healthy lifestyle for youth, the stories of which you’ll find in either this edition or online. And leadership begins at the top. SickKids Foundation CEO and President Ted Garrard even shared his personal story online – a

compelling tale of a young person and how a sedentary lifestyle threatened his future health. In 2013, the number of visitors to our online story collection told us the work of SickKids was important to you. We know you’ll find this year’s collection just as compelling; just as sobering. Whether someone works at SickKids or someone works at this newspaper – we are all parents, grandparents or friends who need to encourage our youth to stay active

The new four-year contracts were settled without proceeding to arbitration for the first time since 2008, notes a press release issued by the TTC. Not many details are known about the new deals, although vehicle operators, fare collectors as well as maintenance workers will receive a pay raise of just over eight per cent over the life of the contract. Non-unionized workers will also receive slight pay increases. There are provisions to restrict job outsourcing.

The Mirror questions candidates in TRINITY-SPADINA

GO ONLINE

Visit us on the web for more byelection coverage, including the June 12 results. Go to www.insidetoronto.com

ACCORDING TO CENSUS data, Trinity-Spadina was home to 144,733 residents in 2011. The riding is bounded roughly by Ossington Avenue to the west, Avenue Road and Victoria Street to the east, Dupont Street to the north and Lake Ontario (including Toronto Island) to the south. It was made up of parts of the former Fort York, St. Andrew-St. Patrick and Dovercourt ridings prior to 1999. New Democrat Rosario Marchese has represented the riding since it was founded. Prior to that, Marchese represented Fort York from 1990-1999.

Tell us about one local issue that you plan to champion as MPP.

LIBERAL

3

4

The debate over whether to expand Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport continues to be a hot topic in the riding. What is your stance on the Toronto island airport?

■ The most important challenge confronting our community is the need to invest in transit. We’re going to fund subways like the downtown relief line, electrify GO and build $10 million worth of bike lanes and cycling infrastructure. All of these new investments and even some of the projects already underway will be cancelled by PC leader Tim Hudak, and even traditional NDP supporters tell me that we need to keep building.

■ I have a plan to bring direct bus service from Liberty Village to Union Station. We’re going to build and invest in the TTC, GO Transit and other regional transit services so we can break gridlock and get our people moving forward. And I also fully support Kathleen Wynne’s plan to invest $10 million in bike lanes and cycling infrastructure because I would love to cycle to work more often.

■ I fully support building the Union Pearson Express so jets aren’t needed at the Island airport.

■ I’ve lived in Trinity-Spadina since my family came to Toronto. The story of my career is working with government to help people. I’ve worked in business, I’ve volunteered, and I’ve worked for cabinet ministers. Working in politics really opens your eyes to the big impact you can make in people’s lives. I grew up here, I live here with my wife and kids, and my parents still live in their house here.

■ I would champion junk food taxes to pay for school food programs and low-income fruit and vegetable benefits. Ontario invests less than any other province per capita in preventing illnesses. Junk food taxes are a powerful tool for combatting poverty, diabetes and obesity, while encouraging everyone to eat better foods. Research has also shown that they will reduce health-care costs.

■ When car drivers pay 33 per cent of the cost of the roads they drive on, while TTC passengers pay 77 per cent of the costs of running Toronto’s transit system, we need to charge drivers more and use that money to improve transit and reduce congestion on the roads. The province also needs to start contributing to the costs of cycling and pedestrian infrastructure. At the moment, they contribute no funding to either.

■ With a train to Pearson airport soon to go into service, it is time to close the Island airport. The problems caused by the current operations – traffic congestion, noise and air pollution – are incompatible with nearby residential communities and the increased need for parkland. In its place, let’s build a car-less community of mixed housing, and use the new tunnel to make it easier for thousands to enjoy the islands’ parks and beaches.

■ I’ve lived in Trinity-Spadina almost all my adult life, and worked with thousands of residents in many community projects over the years. From serving as chair or co-chair of tree-planting projects, Tower Power Toronto (helping condo residents green their buildings), the Downtown West Solar Energy Project and the Harbord Village Residents’ Association, I’ve worked collaboratively with many people and diverse groups.

■ The government killed my Bill 20 to free Toronto from the Ontario Municipal Board, but I will bring this bill back. My four bills to protect condo residents finally pressured the government to review the Condominium Act, and I want to make sure the government finally delivers for condo residents. The Liberals have been silent about jets and island airport expansion, and I want to defend the waterfront when this issue returns in 2015.

■ We need to make the Downtown Relief Line our top priority, not the impractical Yonge subway extension to Thornhill that the Liberals recklessly promised during a byelection. We need clean electric trains to the airport, not dirty diesel trains that will pollute our neighbourhoods. Also, Metrolinx needs to become a credible, transparent and independent public agency like Waterfront Toronto, and stop serving partisan political objectives, like the Liberals’ other reckless subway promise made during the Scarborough byelection.

■ The airport should stay as it is. Expansion threatens Ontario Place, neighbouring communities, marine activity and Waterfront Toronto’s revitalization plans. And the Toronto Port Authority wants millions in provincial funds to pay for the new infrastructure needed to support expanded airport operations, which is money that should be spent on public transit, not on private interest. The public wants a sustainable and vibrant waterfront – not mega-malls, Ferris Wheels and mega-casinos. And not a megaairport either.

■ I emigrated from Italy as a boy, and grew up in Trinity-Spadina, living on Shaw Street most of my life. I was a teacher, and then my Harbord Collegiate friend Joe Pantalone somehow talked me into running for school trustee. I did that for eight years, then ran for MPP in 1990. I have been serving the people of Trinity-Spadina at Queen’s Park ever since, and it is the best job in the world.

■ As an advanced-care paramedic who has worked extensively in Trinity-Spadina, I can see first-hand how people with mental health issues are struggling. The current system can’t cope with it. Our white papers identified some ways we can work to solve these problems. These include ensuring mental health care gets the same priority as physical health care in the emergency room, introducing standardized measurable care targets and improving treatment for addictions and mental health among the homeless.

■ By building new subways – such as a downtown relief line from Etobicoke to Scarborough – and expanding our current highways, we can alleviate the current strain on both systems. This will allow us to improve commuting times, ease crowding on public transit and help you get to where you need to go. We are also going to put the province in charge of all rail-based transit and major highways in the GTA without raising taxes.

■ Toronto’s Island Airport is an important piece of economic infrastructure, and the Ontario PC Party supports the plan to expand its capacity so it can handle modern, quiet jets. This is about taking greater steps to open this city and this province to the world.

■ I’m a longtime resident of Trinity-Spadina. I have served as a full-time advanced care paramedic in the community for almost 30 years, and served on the Toronto Paramedic Association and the Ontario Paramedic Association. I’ve volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Interval House Women’s Shelter and Fife House. These experiences, and the desire to provide a better future for my son, have led to the desire to serve my community.

MLSE Foundation to fund Athletic Grounds

>>>from page 1 this community,” Spearn said. He also promised that families would be treated fairly and equally throughout the relocation process. Michael Bartlett of the MLSE Foundation spoke of his organization’s contribution to the community in the form of the Regent Park Athletic Grounds. Through an investment of more than $2 million, the foundation will fund the grounds, which will provide much-needed play space for local residents. “Shortly before the Regent Park Revitalization began, the residents voiced a keen interest in having access to sport and an opportunity to participate in structured and non-structured play without having to leave their own community,” he said. The sports grounds will include a new soccer-turfed field that can also be used for cricket, a regulation-size outdoor basketball court and an upgraded ice rink. Bartlett added the MLSE Foundation’s work in the com-

munity will not be complete once the Athletic Grounds are finished. “When complete, our MLSE staff and the talented athletes from the Toronto Raptors, Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Marlies and Toronto FC will continually be engaged in this community so that kids can live out their sporting dreams,” he said. In addition to the Athletic Grounds, Phase Three of the Regent Park Revitalization will include the construction of more than 600 replacement rental social housing units, more than 1,800 market condominiums, new retail space along Dundas Street and the creation of three new city streets in an area bounded by Shuter, Sumach, Oak and River streets. As with the first two phases, TCH is working with Daniels Corporation to build both houses and community. Toronto Centre-Rosedale councillor Pam McConnell said the residents were the ones whose vision helped shape the new community. “This is all built on the

shoulders of the people of Regent Park who decided that they wanted a new future for their children and for their families,” she said. She touted the opening of a new park near Dundas and Sackville streets as but one highlight of the ongoing revitalization. That park is set to open on June 21. McConnell acknowledged the relocation process, which has seen families displaced throughout the revitalization process, has been hard on some families. She said, however, the long-term benefits will continue to make the short-term pain worthwhile. Longtime Regent Park resident Ines Garcia said the revitalization will provide plenty of great new opportunities for local residents. “This is such a great opportunity for residents, for kids, for our new generation and especially with these athletic grounds – it’s overwhelming to have this,” she said. “This is my home.”
