Toronto is hardly known for its canoeing opportunities, but a group of some 130 hardy types will be seen portaging through the southern portion of the city and paddling through Lake Ontario this weekend to help kids in need. The event, dubbed Canoe Heads for Kids, raises funds and awareness for Amici Camping Charity, an organization that helps send at-risk kids to summer camp. “We’ve been around for eight years and in that time it’s grown

from a small group of eight individuals who went out on a lengthy 12-hour portage and paddle and raised $10,000 to where we are now, expecting 130 participants to raise about $150,000,” said Canoe Heads for Kids founding chair Andrew Medland. Medland noted Canoe Heads has become an easier trek for participants in the years since its inception. Instead of portaging 20 kilometres before paddling back to the downtown core, participants now travel a far more manageable seven kilometres each way. >>>CANOE, page 11

Panel looks at controversial issue of inclusionary zoning JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com One of the keys to solving Toronto’s affordable housing crisis could come in the form of new legislation, provided the province gives the city that power. Private member bills introduced by Parkdale-High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo and Etobicoke-Lakeshore MPP Peter Milcyn put forth the concept of inclusionary zoning, which would require developments of a certain size to designate a

percentage of the units being built as below-market units. That concept was discussed at length at a panel discussion hosted by Social Planning Toronto on Thursday, May 21 in a meeting room adjacent to College Street United Church. The meeting featured presentations by affordable housing consultant and policy analyst Richard Drdla, social housing and homeless advocate Michael Shapcott of the Wellesley Institute, Remo Agostino of development company the >>>INCLUSIONARY, page 13

Toronto students clean up Moss Park, feed the homeless JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

S

tudents from two Toronto schools descended on Moss Park, and when they left, the park was cleaner and many of the homeless men and women in the area were fed. The students came to the downtown area from George S. Henry Academy in North York and Highcastle Public School in Scarborough as part of the Toronto Police Service’s Reach Out for the Homeless program, in which Toronto Police and other organizations promote youth voluntarism by creating volunteer opportunities in an area of great need. “The day started off with a park clean-up – the park was just full of garbage,” said Sgt. Rodcliff

Chung of the Toronto Police Service Employment Unit. “They cleaned up a lot of garbage and actually found two (hypodermic) needles.” Once the park was cleaned up, the youth – aged 12 to 17 – went out into the community in groups, handing out free meals provided by Hero Certified Burgers to the neighbourhood’s homeless. “They walk through the streets handing out free burgers and pay visits to shelters in the area,” Chung said Friday afternoon, May 22. Given that Moss Park is one of Toronto’s most poverty-stricken neighbourhoods with a large homeless population, the meal came as a boon to many. “It’s hard on the street,” said one recipient. “I don’t know

where my next meal will come from most of the time, so this is one less thing to worry about.” In addition to their good works, the students were able to enjoy some sports and leisure, playing soccer and basketball and taking part in a “beep” test, a fitness test Toronto Police Service members must take to ensure they are in good physical condition. The students enjoyed the day and all it brought with it. “It was fun doing the beep test and then we got to clean up the area, which needed cleaning,” said 13-year-old A.J. Mancilla of Highcastle Public School. “After all the work we did, we got shirts and (gift) bags.” Fellow Highcastle student Matthew Wainman, also 13, said heading into the downtown core

to see the realities many people face was an eye-opener. “It felt good to be able to help out the community and feed the homeless,” he said. What the students learned about the depths of poverty will likely stay with them for a long time, and Reach Out for the Homeless promises to bring them other longtime benefits as well. “When we’re looking at applicants (for the Toronto Police Service), one of the things we always focus on is the volunteer portion,” Chung said. “A lot of companies look at that, and seeing these kids do things like this to help out can only help them in that way.”

Pan Am Torch comes to town G

et ready Toronto, the Pan Am Games Torch Relay is coming to town starting this Saturday. The flame was lit Monday in Mexico and is now on its way to Toronto. It splashes down with a special arrival ceremony celebration at the city’s harbourfront featuring a float plane, canoe and a ‘mystery’ first torch runner. For more details on this weekend’s plans for the torch, see our feature story on page 12. The torch relay goes from May 30 to July 10, and will touch Canadian communities from the Atlantic to the Pacific. More than 130 communities will be visited during the 41-day torch relay, with some 3,000 runners taking part. For local residents, most of the excitement will begin July 4 in the final days leadour view ing up to the opening ceremonies of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am on July 10. Relay to have Games After its visit to the harbourhuge impact front this Saturday, the torch will be carried to the Distillery in Ontario District by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield for a community celebration before heading out across Canada. During its journey, the torch will visit Richmond, B.C.; Calgary, Alberta, during the Stampede; Winnipeg, Manitoba, where Canada last hosted the Pan Am Games in 1999; and Halifax, Nova Scotia. It’s in Ontario, though, where the torch relay will have the biggest impact. Virtually every corner of the province will be visited, with community celebrations planned at numerous locations. As host city, Toronto will have a number of celebrations – with events planned specifically for Scarborough, North York, and Etobicoke in early July. On June 28, the torch will be in the city for the annual Pride Parade. Also, a unique event is set for July 4 at the Prince Edward Viaduct (also known as the Bloor Viaduct). The viaduct will be lit up to create a multicoloured effect on the Luminous Veil, which encases the famous bridge. Community groups including the Danforth BIA, which has incorporated its annual Thrill of the Grill event into the celebration, will be on the bridge to welcome the torch and the relay runners. Metroland Media Toronto will also be a big part of that celebration as we are hosting games and events for kids on the viaduct. For more on the torch relay, visit us at www. insidetoronto.com/toronto-pan-am-games

The status of symbolism at city hall Symbolism counts for a lot in Toronto politics: certainly for more than it should. The Gardiner Expressway, which is really just a strip of elevated concrete and asphalt used by a few of Toronto’s many commuters, is also a symbolic battleground for suburban motorists and downtown pedestrians. Next month at council, that potent symbolism will go up against measly facts and mere expert opinion and more than likely end in council spending an extra $500 million to build new elevated ramps from the Gardiner to the Don Valley Parkway. Such is how it goes when councillors play to their home crowd: from a cynically political perspective, everyone on council will be a winner no matter the outcome. Of course, not all political symbolism at city hall is a slam dunk.

david nickle the city Some of these debates can be treacherous ones indeed – and some of them are very small. On Tuesday, Mayor John Tory’s generally right-ofcentre executive committee spent a good portion of a short meeting dancing around a symbolic leghold trap set by generally left-of-centre councillors Mike Layton and Glenn De Baeremaeker. The two had put forward a member’s motion to have council establish an “environmental bill of rights.” The motion contains many “rights” that very few voters would want to pass up: a right to breathe and drink clean air and water and eat safe food; access to nature; to know about pollutants and the right to take part in decision-making. It also lays responsibil-

ity on council to promote these rights, and by the by points to matters of policy that also have great symbolic value for political brands. Council would have to get behind cycling, walking and transit as a preferred way to get around. No fools, the committee members were not having any of it. Deputy Mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong made it clear his constituents weren’t fond of pedestrian scrambles and other things they believed promoted congestion. Councillor David Shiner suggested his elderly constituents wouldn’t take kindly to being encouraged to walk and bicycle. But they weren’t about to vote it down - because oh, the symbolism of that would have been an embarrassment. Other municipalities – more than 50 of them according to Layton – had passed a simi-

lar bill of rights already. Sent it back So the committee did the sensible thing, and sent it off to the interim city manager for a report to come back late in the fall. Layton was disappointed at that prospect and, laying cards on the table, expressed hope it could come before the federal election. Because after all, it would be really something if Canada’s largest city could make it clear that its policies and practices were all aimed toward preserving the environment, just as Torontonians were set to join their fellow Canadians passing judgement on the environmentally dodgy Conservative government record. Now that would be what you would call symbolic.

Golden experiences for musician Ben Kunder JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

A

fter eight years honing his craft on Toronto’s music scene and in far-flung locales across Canada, Annexbased musician Ben Kunder has taken the plunge and released his debut album, Golden. The work is a culmination of the self-taught musician’s experience. While he did not grow up dreaming of a career in music – his training comes in theatre – Kunder’s life has long been influenced by music in general and singer/songwriters in particular. “My dad had an expansive record collection and I fell in love with the music of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and CSNY,” he said. “I was immersed in that kind of scene from a young age, and then as I got older, I started to find my own tastes in people like Ryan Adams and local performers like Jim Guthrie and Feist.” Kunder’s musical roots came humbly. His family was given a piano by his great aunt when

Annex musician Ben Kunder released his debut album, Golden, on May 26.

he was four years old and his parents enrolled him in piano lessons. While that did little to spark his creativity, a discovery when he was a little older set him on his musical path. “I stumbled across my dad’s old classical guitar from university with a bunch of (sheet)

music and from there I taught myself how to play guitar and how to sing,” he said. “After that, I kept practicing my singing everywhere – in the van with CDs or just in my bedroom in private.” Kunder began performing around town, complementing his artistic lifestyle with carpentry work during the day. He works largely in his home neighbourhood with local business Harbord Village Handy. In addition to his time in Toronto, he has lived on both coasts, both with and apart from his wife. “She moved out west and I chased her,” he said. “Then I moved out east for work and she wound up here. Sometimes, we have our adventures together and that’s special to us, but it can also be great to experience different things and then be able to share those things later.” Golden takes those experiences – the highs and lows – and sets them to a rich and sonorous, albeit largely acoustic, soundtrack. “A lot of the album has to do

with my time being on the road and how, in Canada, we live so far away from each other but we’re all connected by living in this beautiful country,” he said. “(Golden) is kind of about this country, travelling and being away from my wife.” Kunder sings and plays lead guitar, piano and Wurlitzer on the album, which also features a bevy of guest performers including Brian Murphy of Alvvays, Aaron Goldstein of Cowboy Junkies and three members of Ladies of the Canyon. Golden was released on Tuesday, with an official album release party at the Dakota Tavern on Wednesday. For more information on Kunder, or to purchase a copy of Golden, visit www.benkunder. com

Top 5 Tips For Caregivers The Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) provides a variety of supports to those who are transitioning from hospital to home, and to those who need support to remain in their homes. The province of Ontario spends only approximately $2.1 billion on home-based health care (Ontario Home Care Association, 2014), however, this figure does not take into account the considerable support and assistance that is provided by informal caregivers. These people include family members, friends, and neighbours, all of whom are often faced with feelings of stress and are overwhelmed while caring for their loved ones. Fortunately, there are a few simple things that can help alleviate the stress that may be felt by those who are providing caregiving support in the home. Here are five suggestions for caregivers to make daily activities a little bit easier: 1) Accept Your Feelings – It’s normal for caregivers to have a range of feelings related to their roles. Anger, frustration, stress and anxiety are common emotions that occur when one is the primary caregiver for an elderly or ill loved one. Accept your feelings as normal and remember

that you’re not alone. 2) Have an outlet – Join a support group of other caregivers or speak regularly to a close family member or friend who will provide you with a sounding board for your emotions surrounding caregiving. Just knowing that someone is there to listen can make a world of difference. 3) Ask for help – Support from others for even the simplest things can go a long way when coping and providing caregiver support to a loved one. Oftentimes, asking for help can result in enough stress-relief to give you the emotional energy to keep going. 4) Take care of yourself – You’re no good to your loved one if you are not feeling up to par. Be sure to get plenty of rest, eat well and get out of the house whenever you can. 5) Connect With the Community – Be sure to look into community resources that can provide additional help and resources as you continue to support your loved one. For more information about supports and community services for seniors, contact the Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) at (416) 506-9888 or visit www.healthcareathome.ca.

Canoe Heads will gather at Harbourfront Centre to start their journey >>>from page 1 “Doing 20 and 20 (kilometres portaging and canoeing) was a bit more of an iron – it made for a half day,” he said. “This is a lot more accessible.” To date, Canoe Heads for Kids has raised some $415,000 for Amici, ensuring 415 kids who might never otherwise experience camp life have a chance to do so. That, Medland said, makes a far

larger difference than many realize. Amici Camping Charity executive director Kate Hor ton said the event ensures kids aged seven to 17 have a chance to attend overnight camps accredited by the Ontario Camps Association. The kids are recommended by social workers, teachers and community agencies across Ontario, with most of

the campers coming from the GTA. “One thing that sets us apart is that we sponsor kids for as many summers as they wish to return to camp,” she said. “It’s about creating a long-term, sustainable rela-

tionship between kids and camp.” Toronto resident Max Campos, 12, will be returning to summer camp this year thanks to funds raised through Canoe Heads, and is looking forward to reliving the experience. “My favourite part was ziplining into water, but there were a lot of fun activities there,” he said of his time at Camp Onandaga. “It’s a

unique experience and I think every child should be able to go to camp.” His mother, Veronica, said the difference camp made in her son was nothing short of amazing. Canoe Heads for Kids will see participants gather at the Harbourfront Canoe and Kayak Centre at 11 a.m. on Saturday. After brief remarks from current and former campers they will portage

west along Queen’s Quay and onto the Martin Goodman Trail. After a break at Sir Casimir Gzowski Park they will launch their canoes into the water and paddle back to the downtown core. he Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games will be off to a splashing start when the torch touches down in the city Saturday for the start of the 41-day Torch Relay. The Pan Am flame was lit Monday during a traditional ceremony in Teotihuacan, Mexico at the Pyramid of the Sun, which was organized and hosted by the Mexican Olympic Committee (MOC). A float plane carrying a flame lit inside a lantern will touch down in Lake Ontario Saturday, where it will be handed to Elder Garry Sault of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation, who will then travel with the lantern by canoe to shore for a ceremony conducted by Chief Bryan LaForme at Harbourfront Centre. The first torchbearer – whose identity is being kept under wraps – will then leave Canada Square at Harbourfront Centre, where the torch will be passed to several bearers before Col. Chris Hadfield will run with it into The Distillery District. Family oriented celebrations will be held at both Harbourfront Centre, 235 Queens Quay, and The Distillery District, 55 Mill St. Festivities will begin at Canada Square at 2:30 p.m., featuring a soundtrack produced by local musical

The Thrill of the Grill, co-hosted by The Food Ne t w o r k’s c h e f Ly n n Crawford and Tommy Smyth of HGTV’s Sarah 101, will feature a handful of chefs serving up edibles including ribs, corn, and beer. “I hope this is the start of many events on the bridge,” said Jones, adding the BIA was instrumental with the initial funding and advocating for the Luminous Veil and lighting. As for being part of Pan Am Games celebrations, she said residents might be slow to warm to the sporting event, but once it arrives it will be fully embraced. “Any city that is hosting an event like this has a chance to really turn the dial on the city up a notch.”

Torchbearers Connor Boyd and Barbara Kennedy.

Boyd was selected in part because of his longtime love of running and sports. He included a portfolio along with his application that highlighted his time with

Northern’s cross-country team. That earned him the honour of not only carrying the torch, but actually carrying it into the athletes’

village on June 30. “What I’m most looking forward to is meeting some of the athletes and welcoming them to Toronto.” Longtime sporting advocate Barbara Kennedy has also been named a torchbearer, something she chalks up to a lifetime enjoying and advocating sports and active living. The executive director of the Cardiac Health Foundation of Canada, Kennedy will run the torch in the Niagara area. “I l i k e t o r u n , a n d because the (Pan Am)

Games are all about sport, it’s something that’s really close to my own interests,” she said. Kennedy feels prepared already and is eager to get on the road, even though her own torch relay leg will not take place until Saturday, June 20. “I’m ready and can’t wait to get out there,” she said. Kendra is a beautiful 40 year-old young-atheart medical assistant. She is financially stable, and owns her own home. She’s a sweet person who likes to dress up, take care of herself and those around her. She is very active, fun and outgoing. She goes to the gym everyday; she enjoys keeping fit, skiing, and traveling. She owns a motorcycle that she loves to ride, and loves cars as well. Growing up she helped her dad fix up cars in his garage. Kendra enjoys road trips, playing volleyball, going to concerts, and spending lots of time on the beach in the summer. She loves going out dancing with friends, out to dinner, to movies and shopping. She’s watched friends find partners, get married, and have children, while she is still single. She’s tired of being a third wheel when she goes out with friends, and is looking for someone special to fit her lifestyle. Kendra’s tried meeting people at bars and clubs, but they weren’t right for her. She tried online dating, but it was a disaster. Kendra joined our service because she wants someone who is serious and genuine about having a lasting relationship, who is compatible with her, respectful, kind, and her financial equal; someone she can spend her life with.
