JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Buoyed by the “red wave” of support that swept the nation, Liberal Adam Vaughan easily defeated New Democrat Olivia Chow to win the election Monday in the newly formed riding of Spadina-Fort York. Despite being the incumbent, Vaughan was widely seen as the underdog in the race, with many expecting Chow to return to federal politics on the back of three decades of public service, including a stint as MP of Trinity-Spadina from 2006 to 2014. Vaughan credited grassroots support through the riding for leading him to victory. “This campaign starts in Alexandra Park. This campaign starts in a community that needs the help of this city and this country,” Vaughan told his supporters at his campaign party at the Rivoli, about the inner-city neighbourhood. “But...this country needs Alex Park. It needs the ingenuity and the resourcefulness and the spirit and the fight of the residents of Alexandra Park.” Vaughan was first elected federally last year in a byelection to replace Chow after the highprofile New Democrat vacated her seat in the now-defunct riding of Trinity-Spadina in >>>CHOW, page 2

Chow positive towards NDP despite loss, uncertain about political future >>>from page 1 a bid for the mayoralty of Toronto. Vaughan, a former City of Toronto councillor, won the byelection handily, but faced sterner opposition from the popular Chow. Spadina-Fort York was formed in a federal riding redistribution after the last federal election. It consists of the southern portions of Trinity-Spadina and the since-changed riding of Toronto Centre. It is now bounded by Dundas Street West and the Esplanade to the north, Lake Ontario to the south, Dufferin Street and Dovercourt Road to the west and Bay Street and the Don River to the east. Vaughan was surrounded by enthusiastic supporters at his victory party Monday night. While there were not many in attendance before the polls started coming in, the venue’s back room filled up shortly thereafter, and those gathered there

erupted in cheers when he was declared the winner. Vaughan stressed that transit infrastructure would be a priority for both he and the Liberal party. “For those of us that live along King Street, who reside in condominiums and watch five streetcars (drive) by every morning, help is on the way for you, too,” he said. He also offered some positive news for those who have been speaking out against the possibility of jets flying in and out of the island airport. no jets “For the folks on the waterfront, for the folks in the Bathurst Quay neighbourhood, we have been living with a federal government that has turned its back on the very dynamic that defines your neighbourhood,” he said. “(The Liberals have) made a promise. War’s end commemorated ‘Voices of Peace, Dreams of Home’ at St. Andrew’s Saturday, 7:30 p.m. JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

Carol, left, and David Wishart will be sharing their stories of life in Toronto during the Second World War on Saturday at the ‘Voices of Peace, Dreams of Home’ event.

Toronto’s landscape is obviously far different than it was back when the Allied forces took on the Axis powers in the Second World War. St. Andrew’s Church is shining a light on some of those differences with a look back at what it was like growing up in those days of yore. The church is hosting a special war commemoration, Voices of Peace, Dreams of Home, to mark the 70th anniversary of the war’s end. The multi-media show will feature 19 first-hand accounts from those who recall what the world was like between 1939 and 1945, with photos

and era-specific music to complement their tales. “We have quite a number of members of the congregation who were alive and well during World War II who talk about their own experiences during wartime,” said Voices of Peace, Dreams of Home participant David Wishart.

“We have a couple of members who lived in the Netherlands under German occupation and another who lived in occupied Hong Kong.” Wishart and his wife Carol are sharing their own memories as part of the show, which will also feature readings of letters from a soldier to his wife, tours of the 48th Highlanders Museum, big band music from Lenny Graf and his Orchestra and more. The church hopes the topic piques the interest of the public at large in Toronto. “I hope we see a lot of young people, especially,” Wishart said. “There’s child care available and a recep-

tion afterward so people who come out can ask more questions if they like.” The show is the latest in a series of wartime recollections hosted by St. Andrew’s. The church is active in the community through shows such as this one and through outreach programs such as Out of the Cold. Voices of Peace, Dreams of Home will take place at St. Andrew’s Church, 73 Simcoe St., beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24. North Toronto Hockey Association reaches half century mark The North Toronto Hockey Association has dropped the puck on its 50th anniversary season, officially kicking off celebrations last Saturday with a banner-raising ceremony at North Toronto Memorial Arena – its home arena. Many current and former players were on hand, but with one notable exception – 21-year-old Tom Wilson. Wilson was in the lineup as his Washington Capitals hosted the Carolina Hurricanes in National Ho c k e y L e a g u e a c t i o n Saturday night. But Wilson, in his third year with the team, did have this to say (in a press release) about his youth club growing up: “My brothers and I have great memories of our time playing hockey at NT. From house league to select and then AA, North Toronto was our home for hockey and there was no better place to play. “We made great friends, and had outstanding coaches... The rink staff made sure we had perfect ice and the best hot dogs in the city. “NT is where I fell in love with the game and without such a great hockey com-

The club has well more than 1,000 players on its teams which include house l e a g u e, s e l e c t a n d re p teams. The league estimates over the last half century, more than 30,000 boys and girls have worn the distinctive red, green and white North Toronto colours. A number of events are planned to celebrate the club’s half century milestone with the goal of bringing together past and present players, volunteers and the local community. - Norm Nelson

t appears voters believe Justin Trudeau is, in fact, ready to become the Prime Minister of Canada as the red tide of Liberal support swept the country and all of Toronto Monday night. With a majority government, the federal Liberals now have a strong mandate to implement their policies and the priorities they outlined during the 78-day national election campaign. It’s time now for Toronto residents, who voted in the Liberals in all 25 local ridings, to make sure the election promises and commitments to invest in our city are kept by the Prime Minister Designate and the newly elected MPs. Start by getting to know your our view local Liberal MP, many of whom first-time politicians. As it is a City’s priority are majority government, they will be issues must your voice in Ottawa for the next four years. be addressed And while majority governments are more stable, it becomes even more important to hold the party in power accountable to run an agenda that is in the best interest of those who elected them into power. The next four years with a co-operative federal government that is friendly to major cities can go a long way in building community at a very local level. Just as Mayor John Tory outlined in his congratulatory speech, Trudeau’s commitment to cities includes investments in building transit, affordable housing, repairing social housing and other major infrastructure needs. These are all top priority issues for Toronto, which can’t be addressed by just one level of government. In a city as large and complex as ours, the federal government must be a major player in helping provide a solution to these ongoing issues. Since we also have a majority Liberal government in Ontario, we are hoping they can work very well together to the benefit of Toronto and other big cities in the province. Even if you didn’t cast a ballot for the Liberals, the incoming MPs are elected to represent all constituents in their riding. Keep them accountable to the “positive politics” that Trudeau seemed to champion throughout the campaign. Tory said he is looking forward to working with Trudeau on Toronto’s issues. So should we.

Reader hopes series on dementia paves the way for a cultural shift in our concept of the disease Re: ‘Senior + Dementia Series,’ Sept. 24. Please allow me to commend your publication for exploring in-depth the reality of dementia. As your contributors note, awareness must be central to the fundamental cultural change required on the part of all Canadians. With publication of your series, you contribute immensely to the education, which must be a first step to effecting change. Yet, confronting the challenge of dementia requires more than education, information and awareness. Action is vital. Individuals with dementia rely on the emotional and material support of family members who, themselves, may be frail, insufficiently prepared or simply unaware of available health-care resources. Of those who do try to access needed services,

the bureaucratic demands can prove frustrating and draining. Civic society bears the responsibility of facilitating the well-being of entire communities by accommodating the practical needs of those directly impacted by dementia. As a society, we in Canada are blessed with myriad resources to mitigate the effect of dementia on communities. It is in exercising these variables that we can confront the devastation of the condition. Stakeholders such as Dr. Atiya Mahmood is employing her tenure at the Simon Fraser University to explore architecture as a ‘hard’ feature of the environment, which can influence the quality of life of those confronting dementia, and of their caregivers. Dean Trevor Young helms the executive of the Toronto Dementia Research

Alliance, advising on processes for incorporating study of dementia as an organic condition with the holistic demands placed on communities. Until we each find ourselves directly confronted by dementia, it would be easy to ignore the milieu of grief, loss, frustration, which accompanies our loved ones’ decline, but that is not the Canadian way. Our way is to admit the gravity of a situation, and to undertake pursuit of solutions. For the sake of our communities, and of our society, my hope is that your series marks the start of a cultural shift in our concept of dementia. The condition is not a far-off threat. The reality of its social cost, and emotional and financial weight is here, now. Caril Phang MA, Member, College of Nurses of Ontario

prevention of alzheimer’s wtalk

More than 200 chemical toxics in our environment have been associated with various illnesses and with neuro-inflammation, an altered innate immune response in the brain and with the accumulation of amyloid-beta plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles as the main pathology of Alzheimer’s illness. Children exhibiting neurological effects, cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s-like pathology, have also been connected to air pollution, industrial chemicals and pesticides. It is time for the public to take an active role on prevention of Alzheimer’s. We have no clear public policy, nor political leadership because we have turned a blind eye to the effect of pollutants. Bombardier fails to deliver low floor streetcars as scheduled RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Bombardier will not be able to meet a revised schedule for delivery of the TTC’s new low floor streetcar fleet. The company has informed TTC staff it can only guarantee completion of 16 of the new vehicles by the end of 2015, seven short of what it promised in a revised delivery

schedule agreed to earlier this year. “I am incredibly disappointed to learn Bombardier, yet again, will not be meeting their commitments to deliver new streetcars to Toronto,” said TTC Chair Josh Colle in a statement. “They have let down the TTC, our customers, the good workers in Thunder Bay, and all Toronto residents.

We will not let Bombardier’s incompetence hold our patient and loyal customers hostage. We will consider all legal and financial actions at our disposal to address this situation.” In response to the news, which was made public on the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 16, TTC staff is recommending pursuing a $50 million legal action against the company

for late delivery. It is also recommending seeking further damages to cover maintenance costs for the existing streetcar fleet, which must continue to operate in the absence of the new vehicles, and for running supplementary bus service plus unspecified operating and customer impact costs. Back in June, TTC staff expressed serious doubts Bombardier could adhere to a revised schedule for delivering the new streetcars as part of a $1.2 billion agreement originally made in 2009 to replace the existing fleet, which includes vehicles dating back to the 1970s. Under the terms of the original agreement Bombardier was supposed to have had 67 of 204 new streetcars in service by now. There are currently 10. The delays – which Bombardier has blamed on production and labour issues – prompted Colle and TTC CEO Andy Byford to arrange a visit in June to the com-

formally recommend seeking compensation from Bombardier, is expected to be presented to the TTC board for approval during its Oct. 28 meeting. Some TTC board members have also expressed the desire to exclude the company from bidding on future TTC contracts.

McNicoll Bus Garage plans rolling along The McNicoll Bus Garage took another small step to becoming reality as TTC officials were expected to present preliminary design concepts for the project at a public meeting in Scarborough this week. The $181-million project received a major boost over the summer when the Ontario Ministry of the Environment signed off on the last major legislative hurdle for the project. In doing so, it dismissed the concerns of a vocal group of north Scarborough residents that opposes the garage primarily on health grounds. PB Optical stocks quality German-engineered glasses When it comes to glasses, the lenses matter as much as the frames. Which means not only do you want the best looking frames, you also want the lenses that will be the most comfortable for your eyes. “I always want to give my customers the very best,” says Pierre Bouchard, optician and owner of PB Optical Concept Store, located at 70Yorkville Ave. His commitment to quality is what led Bouchard to opening the first North American Rodenstock store, a trustsed brand in vision care since 1877. Rodenstock lenses are used widely in Europe by those who demand only the best when it comes to their vision. All of the frames and lenses are designed, developed and constructed in Germany.

With premium quality materials and a malleable metal core, Bouchard can completely tailor the frames for the most comfortable pair of glasses. PB Optical stocks five lines of frames, including rocco, Claudia Schiffer, Porsche Design, Jil Sander, Bogner and Mercedez-Benz Design. The lenses are also unique - from the lightweight and ultra-thin plastic or mineral glass materials, to the way the optician measures your entire vision system, so you don’t have to adjust to your glasses, they are already adjusted to you. For more information about PB Optical Concept store and Rodenstock, visit www.PBOptical.com or call the store at 416-413-0086.

Heritage Toronto plaques commemorate century-old homes Could make for a good gift but certain criteria must be met Heritage Toronto said its new ‘Century House’ plaques would make a good holiday gift. But there are two key points to be aware of: One, the lucky recipient must reside in a house in Toronto that is a century old. And two, the timeline is tight if you want to gift the actual plaque. This is no gift for last-minute

shoppers: It takes about six to eight weeks to process. Another factor is cost. With a price tag of $250, it’s not cheap. The price not only covers historical research, production, installation kit and delivery costs, but also supports Heritage Toronto programs, such as walking tours of the city and other plaque projects that commemorate significant people, places,

and events. The plaques are handmade to order in a classic, European-inspired design and are suitable for a variety of settings including doubling as a street address marker either attached to the home or hung in a yard or garden. The plaque doesn’t mean the home is subsequently listed or designated on the city’s inventory

of heritage properties, but it is a way for homeowners to distinguish their homes as important parts of Toronto’s built heritage. Heritage Toronto is a charitable arms-length agency of the city established in 1949 to promote a greater appreciation for the city’s rich architectural, cultural, archaeological and natural heritage.

French as a Regent Park voters get surprise welcome at the poll booth Second Language JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com A number of downtown polling stations gave new meaning to “political parties” on Monday. Voters turning out at some of the polls there were treated to small-scale street celebrations being held outside polling stations, with music, cheering, signs and high-fives for those casting a ballot. One such party, outside the Regent Park Aquatic Centre, saw staff members and volunteers from the Centre for Social Innovation (CSI) Regent Park handing out buttons, holding up signs and encouraging those who went to the polls. “A bunch of us came together to brainstorm ways to make (voting) a radical experience for voters,” said

Centre for Social Innovation Regent Park volunteers and staff cheer for voters exercising their mandate on election day Monday.

French Programs at the TDSB Applications for Early French Immersion are open from November 2 to December 3, 2015. Information evenings run throughout November.

Shilbee Kim of CSI Regent Park. “It was part of an initiative throughout Regent Park, St. James Town and Moss Park, and there were multiple agencies involved.” The non-partisan event featured folk musicians, costumes, glitter, and signs

saying those who voted are “awesome” and more. “We wanted to celebrate voting, make people laugh and make it a positive experience,” Kim said. “I feel pretty sure it will increase voter turnout in the future,” she said.

Shoppers check out the produce at a market in Moss Park earlier this month. A move is underway to bring a more permanent produce market to the underserved area.

Market would provide much-needed food retail option for local residents >>>from page 1 days a week.” Higgins said the market would ideally be housed in a small, permanent structure such as a shipping container, and its realization depends on whether Toronto Community Housing is willing to allocate the space. It would provide a muchneeded food retail option for the residents of Moss Park, many of whom face mobility challenges. “In general, the residents in Moss Park feel there aren’t a lot of amenities or programs there, and there are a lot of seniors and people with disabilities in the neighbourhood who have a hard time travelling to buy produce,” Higgins said. T h e A r m a n Fa r m e r’s Market, a long-time community market at Parliament and Dundas streets, has already signed on as a vendor

should the Moss Park project get the green light. When Arman Farmer’s Market held a one-time pop-up shop in Moss Park on Oct. 3, the response from local residents was overwhelmingly positive. “Everybody came down into the park and said ‘this is so nice – are you here next week?’” said Arman Farmer’s Market proprietor Wali Barak. He noted the market would do more than provide fresh food options from local growers at reasonable prices. “What you see when you go into Moss Park, it’s like nobody lives there – it’s scary,” he said. “When I came into Regent Park 16 years ago, it was the same thing, but then people came to the market and got to know the other people there.” Higgins added more rec-

ognition between neighbours would lead to a safer community, with the activity brought about by the market only adding to that. “There’s a large space there that’s poorly used and there are a lot of safety concerns,” he said. Higgins said preliminary talks with Toronto Community Housing staff made him hopeful that the market concept would gain traction. He and others pushing for the market would like to see it open up as early as this winter, adding they are looking into what permits would be needed to bring the market to life. He noted there would still be opportunities for local residents to make their voices heard on the matter.
