OFF TO A FUNERAL: Zombie Pee-wee Herman, Paul Huggy, attends the ‘funeral’ held Saturday afternoon at the Royal Theatre for the Toronto Zombie Walk. Lack of funding has forced the organizers to end production of the formerly annual event. For more photos from the event, see page 12.

Given the amount of development proposed around Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue, there is little surprise there have been three major studies done on the area. With concerns over built form, growth in the area and infrastructure, residents in and around the area have plenty to keep track of, and the fact that there are three studies – Eglinton Connects, the YongeEglinton Centre Review and Midtown in Focus (which was approved at council in June) – can make it tricky for those residents to ensure they have the latest and most accurate information.

Cabbagetown Festival kicks off with film fest JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com The streets of Cabbagetown will once again host the city with the return of the annual Cabbagetown Festival. The annual event, which brings tens of thousands of people into the downtown community, is looking to be bigger and better than ever thanks to a new set of additions to its

already-packed roster of events and attractions. While the main festival itself lasts only two days – Sept. 12 and 13 – a series of affiliated events ensure there’s something going on in the community to appeal to every taste. The celebrations begin Wednesday, Sept. 9, when the Cabbagetown Short Film and Video Festival settles into its new home.

“It’s been getting more and more successful, so it’s gone into a larger venue – Daniels Spectrum,” said StephenThomas Maciejowski of the Cabbagetown BIA, the organization that heads up the Cabbagetown Festival each year. “It’s good to see them expand because that means they can bring film to a larger audience.” On Friday, Sept. 11, things

will heat up even more with the Cabbagetown Arts and Crafts sale taking over Riverdale Park and the Cabbagetown Theatre Company staging familyfriendly performances in the Necropolis on Winchester Street. Both the Arts and Crafts sale and the performances will run through the weekend. Come Saturday, Sept. 12, things will get into full swing, >>>THREE, page 10

LINKS TO INFO To help facilitate this, the City of Toronto has created a special web portal to keep residents up to date. The site offers links to the studies, news on meetings and other must-know dates, a development review including a map of proposed applications in the area, contacts at the city and other crucial information for those looking to keep informed and make their voices heard. Karen Hines takes to the stage for her play Crawlspace justiN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com When Karen Hines finally bought her first house in a west downtown neighbourhood in 2006, she thought she was living the dream. Instead, she wound up with a list of house defects and issues that could only be classified as a nightmare. Hines is gearing up to share her home-buying horror story with a limited staging of her new play, Crawlspace, based on her own National Magazine Awardnominated article titled ‘My Little House of Horrors’. “I had been wishing to have a house in Toronto – it was a longtime dream of mine,” she said. “When the economic downturn hit and house prices stayed high, I decided it was time to get in while I still could.” She managed to find a small house that fit her price range and seemed move-in ready. All it appeared to need were some Martha Stewartstyle finishing touches and it would be the ideal living space.

I have a feeling that nobody who sees (Crawlspace) will look at a new house the same way.” – Karen Hines

“It seemed perfect – everything was done and it looked like it would be low maintenance, which is what I wanted,” she said. “As soon as I moved in, things revealed themselves to be not done, or not done as well as they had said.” Among the immediate problems were vents that didn’t ventilate air to the outside of the home, and floors that didn’t quite meet the walls, which Hines said “made it very welcoming to rodents.” “After that, there were problems with property boundaries, and then the more disturbing problems emerged,” she said. Hines noted a home inspection offered no clue that she was in for a

rude awakening. She does not even know whether the sellers were aware of many of the problems when they

listed the home, so she is deliberately not naming names or locations “to protect the names of the innocent and maybe the not-so-innocent.” Taking her story to the stage is a natural fit for Hines. The North Toronto Collegiate grad – she grew up in Moore Park and Baldwin Village – is a veteran of Toronto’s theatre scene. She has directed the works of horror clowns Mump & Smoot and has twice been a finalist for the Governor General’s Award for her works Pochsy Plays and Drama: Pilot Episode. She is adapting the latter for the screen under the working title Crazy Like a Girl, and has also appeared in several films and television programs, including Ken Finkleman’s Newsroom, Foreign Objects and Married Life. “I’m working on (Crazy Like a Girl), but I need to find some time to work exclusively on that because they say it takes 10 years to make your first film,” she said. “It will take total submersion, so of course I keep falling back toward plays because they’re so much more doable.”

Crawlspace is one of her more intimate works, with a small space in Kensington Market transformed into a dream version of her house of horrors’ living room. Hines will welcome 15 audience members in to share her experiences. While the play highlights some of the perils and pitfalls of home ownership, Hines said she did not set out to write a cautionary tale. If anything, she hopes to convey the message that home ownership is not the be-all and end-all for a younger generation that is increasingly being priced out of the market. “A lot of young people today don’t even think they’ll ever own a house – that window’s closed, and that’s OK,” she said. “It’s a dream my generation subscribed to, with wide-plank floors and granite countertops. I have a feeling that nobody who sees (Crawlspace) will look at a new house the same way.” Crawlspace runs from Sept. 11 to 27 at Videofag, 187 Augusta Ave.

Deragh Campbell chosen as one of three TIFF rising stars JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com For a relative neophyte in the world of film, Deragh Campbell has certainly turned plenty of heads. Campbell made her big-screen debut in 2013 in Matthew Potterfield’s film ‘I Used to Be Darker’, which was one of The New Yorker’s Top 25 films of the year. Since then, she has garnered a couple more feature film roles, but her overall body of work is hardly fulsome – no surprise, since she has always been more of a writer than an actor, and studied creative writing at Montreal’s Concordia University. “Even as a kid, I had always been more interested in short fiction and novels,” she said. “Growing up, I enjoyed theatre a lot (her father was a theatre actor) and I read a lot, but movies were not really central to my childhood.”

The Bloorcourt Village area resident said she was shocked to have been one of four young actors selected to participate in the TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) Rising Stars program, a professional development initiative designed to help young Canadian talent hone their skills. “It’s definitely true I have a bit less experience than the other three actors,” she said. “I hope I was picked because of my sincerity that came through in the interview (for the award.)” Campbell’s career in film came about by chance. She met Potterfield at a party after one of her friends had already been cast in ‘I Used to Be Darker’. She had read the script, and when Potterfield said he had been having trouble finding someone with a Northern Irish accent to play the other female lead, she noted she could do one.

Photo/GEORGE PIMENTEL

Deragh Campbell was recently named one of four TIFF Rising Stars by the Toronto International Film Festival.

“My mom’s from Northern Ireland, so it just fit,” she said. “I

originally decided to do it because it was a way of working with a writer I really liked, but it was just such a positive experience. Performing was something that felt really, really good – it was more physical than writing, obviously, and not just cerebral.” Campbell credits Potterfield for helping her gain an appreciation of film, both by exposing her the world through his own cinephile leanings and by being a sensitive director who wasn’t scared off by her lack of experience. “He wasn’t teaching me how to act, he was teaching me to be able to be myself on film,” she said. His direction – and her natural talent – paid off. Campbell is now slated to appear alongside former TIFF Rising Star Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) in the upcoming film ‘The Other Half’ and is starring in another feature, ‘O, Brazen Age’. “I’ve been lucky because I’ve

always been able to build close relationships with the people I’ve worked with, which makes it so much easier,” she said. While film has taken a major role in her life, Campbell continues to pursue her writing career. She was recently awarded a MacDowell Colony Fellowship for her work and enjoys the freedom she has by having two distinct creative passions. “It’s really nice to be able to move from one to the other,” she said. “When I’m feeling isolated, I can go act and when I’m feeling oversocialized, I can go write.” As one of the TIFF Rising Stars, Campbell will be invited to take part in a series of public events, industry meetings, development sessions and networking opportunities.

abour Day is like the middle of the longest car trip you can remember: powering across the prairies, destination a little farther past the horizon than the trip’s beginning. Prime Minister Stephen Harper got us started early – way back in August, packing up the federal election campaign bus in the dark and hauling us from our Sunday morning beds without so much as a bathroom break before hitting the highway. And now here we are: in the midst of the longest federal election this century, that by the polls is anyone’s to win. So far, for those of us paying attention and not distracted by our view the attack ads on the in-car DVD player, what we’ve had to occupy Serious us are strategic and tactical questions. questions The trial of suspended senator to consider Mike Duffy has laid bare some of the inner workings of Harper’s prime minister’s office (PMO), and we’ve puzzled over how the revelations might be used by the New Democrats or Liberals, or somehow minimized by the Conservatives. We’ve watched Liberal leader Justin Trudeau dodge attack ads complimenting his hair, but questioning his readiness, then put in a good early debate performance, and wondered how that might affect the polls. And we’ve tried to figure out what it is Tom Mulcair’s New Democratic Party is doing to edge into the lead in all those polls that keep dropping. Well, it’s Labour Day coming up – not even halfway to the Oct. 19 election day – and it’s safe to say we’ve burned through all the simple driving games. It’s time to start paying attention – and by that we don’t mean watching U.S. Republican leader hopeful Donald Trump on YouTube. Voters in Toronto and across the country are facing some serious questions about the next five years. The three main parties are offering very different visions and plans to navigate this country down what could be some very rough roads. Conservatives, Liberals and New Democrats sharing the driving up front will have strategies for us to consider. Although it may not seem like it here in the back seat, we, the voters, only have choices.

Olympic flame a temptation too great to resist There are some temptations that are too much for a mayor to resist. Promising a tax freeze, or increases so low they may as well be? That’s a tough one. Devising a new transit plan that wasn’t on anybody else’s long-term infrastructure plan? Good luck saying no. But those are all easy when it comes to the tempting, flickering flame of the Olympics. A mayor who says no to that would have to be made of sterner stuff than pretty well all of them. So it is with Mayor John Tory, who appears to be following Oscar Wilde’s advice, which is to say, banishing temptation by yielding to it. After a summer of feigning a wait-and-see attitude, Tory appears to be ready to go all in with a bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics. There is a lot to like, politically at least, in being

david nickle the city out-front in a bid for an Olympic Games. It is, first and foremost, a fundamentally boosterish enterprise: mayors and business leaders and often popular sports figures spend lunch-hours before cameras speaking highly of their city and basking in the glow of it. Infrastructure projects find themselves at least nominally on a fast-track for funding. The city and its leadership floats along on dreams. Of course, dreams are what they are, and things can go nightmarishly wrong. Former mayor Mel Lastman brought the city a pot-full of embarrassment when he made a cannibalism joke as he prepared to visit Africa to court International Olympic Committee (IOC)

votes on Toronto’s 2008 bid. The only thing that might have been worse would have been actually winning the bid over Beijing, and ending up with a suite of unusable facilities and terrible debt as Montreal did in 1976 – or just disappointing economic results as London did in 2012. Tory might be headed for a more ignominious defeat than that. There is serious question as to whether even his own council – even the portion of council that happily supports him – is at all supportive of going forward with the plan. On Tuesday, members of the city’s budget committee had little time for launching a bid for 2024. Budget Chief Gary Crawford made it clear he was “cautiously” withdrawing from the idea – the cost of simply launching a bid being a major barrier. Etobicoke Centre Councillor John Campbell opined that even if the pri-

vate sector or some other level of government were to front the $50 to $60 million it costs to launch a bid, the city would still be best to stay away. Others, like York Centre Councillor James Pasternak suspected with Los Angeles entering the race, winning the Olympics would simply be impossible for 2024. Perhaps, he thought, 2028 might work, but with a novel and so-far againstthe-rules strategy of teaming up with Buffalo, New York, for an international bid. Based on all of that, it looks as though no matter how mightily Tory is tempted, the better judgement of his friends on council will prevail – and our mayor will find himself hauled back from the bright Olympic flame, before his wings get any more than a little singed.

Skinny house in Regent Park offers creative use of space JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com With real estate values continuing to climb, one threestorey downtown home has been placed on the market for a relative bargain price of $750,000. For those wondering how that’s possible, it must be noted the house sits on a lot that’s only eight-feet wide – something virtually unheard of for a cramped condo, much less a detached home. But what the “skinny house” at 383 Shuter St., in Regent Park lacks in external width, it more than makes up for with its clever use of space. “The house is actually seven and a half feet – about seven feet, three-inches inside, but you’re looking at over 1,000 square feet of living space plus the basement,” said real estate agent Frank Leo, who listed the home. Inside, the home, owner George Samaras has installed glass panels and rustic wooden floors – and for those who might be worried such a narrow space would be limiting, it’s surprisingly functional. “All the appliances are small, but everything’s here,” Samaras said, pointing out the 24-inch stove, 22-inch refrigerator and 18-inch dishwasher. “There’s a double shower in the basement and a sauna for two. There’s everything here you could want.” That’s the reason Samaras and his family have called the place home for 25 years, opting to move out in order to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown Toronto in favour of a more relaxing lifestyle in the Niagara Falls area. “We love it here, but we’re leaving because I’m so stressed with work in the big city,” the owner said. “We go to Niagara Falls every weekend and we decided to move out there.” The home features two bedrooms, three bathrooms, a combo washer/dryer, a welllandscaped backyard, large balcony and plenty of bright spaces that are remarkably open for such a narrow piece of real estate.

George Samaras, top, is the owner of the ‘skinny house’ at 383 Shuter St., that is currently up for sale. Above, one of the rooms in the house.

“It looks so small from the outside, but inside there’s lots of space,” Samaras said. “It’s so bright and open – there’s only one curtain in the whole house and that’s in my bedroom.” The home was originally built in 1880 as a one-storey dwelling. Back then, it was listed at 99 1⁄2 Sydenham St., though new development in the area has seen the street address change. When Samaras moved in

a quarter century ago, he paid $100,000 for the house, well below the listed price of $169,000. Given the red-hot real estate market in Toronto these days, however, its modern-day list price of $750,000 makes it a good value – not to mention a conversation piece. “I’ve sold thousands and thousands of properties in Toronto and every one is unique, but this one’s a little bit more unique,” Leo said.

A funeral for Zombies

health Helping to conceive

Zombies say goodbye: Right and clockwise, Lauralee Kelloway sheds a zombie tear during a ‘funeral’ held Saturday afternoon at the Royal Theatre for the Toronto Zombie Walk. Lack of funding has forced the organizers to end production of the formerly annual event. Jasmin Marisett places a Toronto Zombie Walk T-shirt inside the coffin. The Toronto Zombie Walk is laid to rest at the Royal Theatre. Mary Klimkosz makes her way into the funeral at the Royal Theatre.

Free online handbook to help The minimum wage is going up. Here’s what you need to know: people suffering from concussions fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com To help people better understand symptoms and coping strategies of concussions, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital developed an online handbook geared toward management and recovery. Launched last month, the Concussion and You: A Handbook for Parents and Kids is a free, 28-page guide developed by youth concussion experts at Bloorview’s Concussion Centre. Though recovery time can range from days to weeks to months, improvement can be made by resting your body and brain, said Dr. Nick Reed, clinician scientist in the Concussion Centre at Bloorview. “We are not trying to reinvent the wheel,” he said of the handbook. “We are trying to meet the needs specifically of parents and kids, and provide specific strategies that apply

to day-to-day life.” The handbook is not geared toward athletes, but anyone – young and old – who suffered a concussion, Reed said. “You can get a concussion from sport, tobogganing, walking down the street,” he said. “The strategies can 100 per cent be used by anyone.” According to the handbook, brain injury may happen because of a hit to the head, face, neck or somewhere else on the body. When a hit takes place, the brain moves back and forth inside the skull. If it moves hard enough, the brain can become injured. This can make your brain and body work and feel different. Concussion symptoms can include headaches, nausea, sensitivity to light and noise, difficulty concentrating and remembering, difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep, sadness, anger and irritability. If a concussion is sus-

pected, the person should stop studying, working or playing, see their doctor for diagnosis and rest their brain and body. Activities such as reading, using electronics, video gaming, physical activity or walking or taking the bus in noisy environments should be avoided. The “Four P’s” – Prioritize, Plan, Pace and Position (ensuring the environment isn’t too taxing on the brain) – should be followed to conserve energy. The injured person should also slowly return to school and keep a daily schedule and activity log. “We use the gas tank analogy,” Reed said. “Your brain has only so much fuel. With a concussion, the tank is only half full. Be aware of the symptoms, document the patterns so you’re not hitting empty on the gas tank.”
