Mandela Park P.S. to celebrate namesake’s birthday JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Regent Park will be home to a special celebration today in honour of former South African President and anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela. The event will have added poignancy given that Mandela’s

health has been failing of late, though it had been planned to take place regardless. “We’re watching the situation (with Mandela’s health) very carefully, but either way, it’s Nelson Mandela International Day as declared by the UN,” said Lloyd McKaell, the vicechair of the Honouring Mandela

Committee. The event will take place on Mandela’s 95th birthday and will include a wide array of live entertainers and a chance for Torontonians to celebrate Mandela’s legacy with others from around the world. “We’ll have a live stream set up where we’ll be beamed via

satellite along with various other cities so Toronto can join in with applause for Mr. Mandela’s 95th birthday,” McKaell said. Entertainers will include South Afr ican-Canadian singer Loreen Klassen, Amanda Martinez and others, and there will be speakers and children’s >>>live, page 7

The St. James Town Youth Council is once again looking for the community’s support in revitalizing a derelict tennis court in the middle of the downtown neighbourhood. The court is one of the few spaces in the dense area where youth and other community members can play sports, and the Youth Council hopes to turn it into a multi-sport facility, which would allow for cricket, ball hockey, tennis and basketball. “Right now, it still gets used, but the court’s very unsafe,” said St. James Town Youth Council member Naomi Soeandy. “I’ve seen people playing t-ball in there and tennis, but the ground’s so uneven the ball bounces off weirdly.” She noted there is no shortage of work to be done in order to get the court ship-shape and safe for sports. “The fences need to be taken out and new fences put in and the ground’s cracked and terrible. My friend broke her leg playing tennis on that court,” she said. To raise a significant portion of the estimated $75,000 required to see the court turned into a safe, multi-sport space, >>>$25,000, page 10
