Clinton Street Public School turns 125

The venerable Annex-area school celebrated its 125th anniversary with a special ceremony last Thursday with Lt.-Gov. plans to replace the existing crematoria in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The Mount Pleasant Group of Cemeteries put an applica-

tion in with the Ministry of the Environment to replace their old crematoria equipment with new equipment they say will reduce emissions.

layers from the Grey Cup-winning Toronto Argonauts took a little time out off their off-season schedule to drop by the University of Toronto and provide some valuable antibullying advice to students from a number of GTA schools on Tuesday. The Argos players and cheerleaders took part in a student summit with high school and elementary school students. The pro squad ran workshops with high school students, who then shared what they learned with elementary school students in attendance. The players also answered questions about bullying from the students as part of the team’s Huddle Up Bullying Prevention Program. “This is our 12th year running the program and we’ve visited close to half a million students,” said Argos director of education and community programs Jason Colero.

“We’re trying to teach young people to be positive bystanders when they see bullying.” Colero said being a positive bystander could entail anything from intervening in a bullying situation in a safe, non-violent way to telling a teacher or other authority figure when bullying is going on. “We teach them to stand up, speak up and not to just stand by and let it happen,” he said. Members of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues helped out with the program, assisting as the Huddle Up team facilitated workshops and activities. “Our core values here include diversity and tolerance and this gives our students an opportunity to put their feet on the ground and teach others about those values,” said U of T Varsity Blues football head coach Greg Gary. He noted bullying “is something we all want to make sure isn’t allowed in our schools, in our businesses and in our sports.” One lesson the students

could take home from the workshop was that no one is immune to bullying. Argos defensive back Matt Black, a Northern Secondary School graduate, acknowledged he had been on both sides of the bullying coin.

“I wasn’t viciously bullied, but it definitely happened to me as a kid,” he said. “I was also a bully at times, so I’ve seen both ends of it and I think it is a great program to stop that kind of thing from hap-

pening.” Black has taken part in Huddle Up for four years and feels the program is immensely valuable. “It’s awesome to get a chance to visit schools and just talk to kids about bullying,” he said.

Varsity Blues offensive guard Kyle Draga also admitted to having been bullied a lot when he was in elementary school, which may seem surprising for a football player now listed at 6-foot-three and 380 pounds. “It stopped when I got a lot bigger in high school,” he said, adding programs such as Huddle Up can not only teach students the importance of being a positive bystander, but also provide new hope to students who are being bullied. “When I was being bullied, I felt alienated,” he said. “I felt like I was the only one being bullied, so if I’d felt like I had someone to talk to, I would have felt better about it.” Following the student summit, the students were to take what they learned and share it with others at their school. They were given credit for volunteer hours for taking part in the program.

rtscape has made a difference in the Regent Park community through its development of the Daniels Spectrum space. Now Daniels Spectrum will give back by housing the organization’s second annual Artscape Salon fundraiser. The gala event will host a picnic theme and will allow guests to spend some time dining and chatting with some of the city’s leading artistic lights. “It’s sort of a round robin dinner with cultural luminaries from the City of Toronto,” said Liz Kohn, Artscape spokesperson. “With each course, a different speaker will go to each table and talk a bit about how the city influences their art and their

artistic practice.” Guest speakers run the gamut, covering a variety of artistic genres from street artist Dan Bergeron to prima ballerina Victoria Tennant to Regent Park School music director Richard Marsella to singersongwriter Jason Collett, who is embarking on a solo career following a run with indie darlings Broken Social Scene, along with 16 others. “There are four courses and we want each table to get four different perspectives on art in Toronto,” Kohn said. Artscape Salon will feature picnic-themed dishes prepared by chefs from top Toronto restaurants. Kohn said the theme of having a Picnic in the Park was fitting given the event will take place in the Regent Park community. After dinner, guests are

invited to hang around for a mix-and-mingle session over drinks. “People can continue a conversation with someone they sat with or speak with someone who didn’t make it to their table,” Kohn said. art auction The fundraiser will also include live and silent auctions in which guests can bid on pieces of art created by Artscape tenants. In addition to its work at Daniels Spectrum, the arts support organization offers housing for up-and-coming artists in the city at its Wychwood Barns, Distillery District, Toronto Island, Queen Street West and Liberty Village locations. “The great thing about the auction items is that by having them contributed mostly by Artscape tenants, we get to split the proceeds

from those items 50-50 with them,” Kohn said. “They’re making a donation to Artscape, but they don’t go away empty-handed.” Ward 19 councillor Mike Layton will return as the auctioneer for the live auction. Funds from Artscape Salon will go toward the organization’s ongoing efforts to support the arts in the city, including youth mentorship programming, educational workshops and Artscape DIY, which seeks to help communities create their own creative spaces. Transit needs to be provincial priority

hould a provincial election come before summer - and we’re still waiting to see whether Ontario’s New Democrats will support the budget put forward by the minority Liberals on May 2 – transit must be at the forefront of the debate for Torontonians. Toronto council’s decision last week not to endorse any of the proposed revenue tools for transit expansion can be taken as an indication it is not keen on working with other stakeholders – including other municipalities – until after a provincial election. At best, it’s a non-commital stance. When it came time to consider those tools, Toronto council rejected all but two, and even then offered no opinion on those. In addition, council voted to ask the province for funds for a westward expansion of the Sheppard subway and the conversion the Scarborough Rapid Transit line to an extension of the Bloor-Danforth subway line. Neither of these projects (the our view Scarborough project is currently as an upgrade and extenTransit vision funded sion of the existing RT line) are listed as a priority of Metrolinx, has to be the provincial transportation made clear agency. The city’s position on transit funding is at distinct odds with the positions recently put forward by Metrolinx, other municipalities and organizations such as the Toronto Region Board of Trade, who agree that if we want transit expansion, we must find a way to pay for it. So what does this all mean? It means if Ontario is plunged into an election, it is incumbent on Torontonians to hold the candidates and their parties to account. We must ask them: What is their vision for transit’s future in Toronto? How do they intend to fund the necessary expansion to relieve our gridlocked roadways? How will responsibility for cost recovery be allocated? These are hard questions. They demand thoughtful answers. We recently wrote in this space about how these proposed revenue tools are “gaining traction with influential decision-making groups and the public that is willing to pay for better transit.” We need to be part of that discussion so Toronto’s council is actively proposing solutions – not just demanding more funds. A provincial election campaign, should it happen, is the ultimate opportunity to have your say.

More legislative futility at city hall On Monday, six members of Toronto council had a look at possible changes to the way they’re elected. City clerk’s staff had come out with a range of ways to make the process more open, to make sure that as many residents as possible are enfranchised, to make the best choice for representing their needs and aspirations. The committee would have none of it: all the recommendations lost on a tie vote. It was a depressingly familiar moment of legislative futility at city hall. The week previous, council had similarly failed to present a coherent opinion on funding for the public transit expansion that Toronto needs. Over the course of two days, councillors collectively rejected nearly every funding option set in front of them. And then asked for hundreds of millions of dollars of new transit projects. Now, council supports to spending another

david nickle the city $500 million to turn the Scarborough RT minisubway into a full-blown subway and another subway line connecting Downsview station to Yonge-Sheppard station. The transit asks useful politically. York Centre Councillor James Pasternak joined council with the narrowest of electoral margins, and he did so in part on a pledge to see that subway connection built. Scarborough Centre Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker was elected more handily in 2010, but has made a name for himself opposing Mayor Rob Ford’s “Scarborough” subway. He knows full well that many of their constituents voted for Ford because of his subway promise. Opposing subway expansion in Scarborough is going to hurt at least their

victory margins, and could see them out of a job. The fact that both positions – the mayor’s and council’s – amount to little more than expensive and unproductive pandering is beside the point. Under the current electoral system, pandering is the most effective weapon in the campaign arsenal. Would changing the electoral system resolve Toronto’s transit gridlock issues? By itself, it’s unlikely. But the reality is that for a variety of reasons, Toronto council has descended to a level of opportunism that if allowed to persist, will render it all but irrelevant in the lives of Torontonians. It might make sense to see if there’s a better way to have a government that reflects both the will and the needs of Toronto. All the evidence suggests that the current system has not done so.

Signal lights could solve gridlock Re: ‘The perils of not articulating a transit vision,’ Beyond the Headlines, May 2. Columnist David Soknacki has just confirmed my position on transit. He points out that in Scarborough and Etobicoke “almost 60 per cent of residents use their car as their primary means of transportation.” They know there is no way transit can be designed to take them where they want to go in a reasonable time. Downtown is already well serviced. Why should people in either place pay for transit they won’t use. The improvement on Bloor from Avenue to Jane by fixing the traffic signals could be spread across the whole city and would have more impact on actual travel times. David Vallance

FORUM AT EXHIBITION PLACE wACCESSIBILITY Last week at Exhibition Place, The TTC held its annual accessibility forum giving transit riders an opportunity to provide feedback on mobility issues. As a panel of TTC brass listened, the forum attendees were given an opportunity to provide comments on service, their comments projected onto to a screen. While many praised the TTC and Wheel-Trans for providing good service, others also shared their concerns, which ranged from technical difficulties ordering transport to having to deal with ablebodied passengers sitting in seats designated for the disadvantaged. Following the forum, TTC CEO Andy Byford promised to spend a day in a wheelchair to gain some understanding of what mobility-challenged riders deal with traversing the TTC. The undertaking was organized by the TTC and the Advisory Committee on Accessible Transit (ACAT)

Waterfront Toronto is set to announce the winners of an international public art contest for its three sites in the West Donlands. The planning agency, which has representatives from all three levels of government in its board, has appointed a jury of design experts to judge the submissions for three separate

sites along Front Street. Waterfront Toronto, which is also working with the TTC to complete a $100 million renovation of Queens Quay, wants the art installations completed in time for the 2015 Pan American Games. The first of a fleet of articulated buses set to service the streets of Toronto was spotted last week. A picture of the 60 foot “bendy” bus, was released for public consumption via social media showing the Nova Bus manufactured vehicle, which is distinguished by a pivoting joint dividing two separate seating sections. That was the assurance from Christopher Glaisek of Waterfront Toronto during a townhall at the Brigantine Room last week, which is proceeding on a $110-million transformation of Queens Quay that will see the lakeside concrete roadway turned into a tree-lined promenade by 2015. The project, which is funded by all three levels of government, also includes a $10-million re-construction of the TTC streetcar tracks (on Queen’s Quay) from Bay to Yo Yo Ma lane, east of Bathurst, which will not re-open to streetcar traffic until the end of year. Vehicle traffic routing will remain one way until March 2014 when it switches to eastbound traffic. By summer 2014, Glaisek, Waterfront Toronto’s vice president of planning, said the new roadway will be com-

plete and open to two-way car traffic. He said the TTC will also start running more replacement buses along Queens Quay, to replace the streetcars, with frequent service to accommodate increased summer traffic. Bob Rasmussen said he was pleased to hear progress is being made on the revitalization of Queens Quay. But the president of the York Quay Neighbourhood Association (YQNA) is worried the replacement TTC bus service will prove confusing to the estimated 17 million people who visit Harbourfront every summer. “If someone was coming from another part of the city they would take the subway down to Union Station, hop on a bus to Bay and Queens

Quay and then have to take a streetcar to continue along,” Rasmussen said. “Our view is that’s too confusing, It’s not good for residents and certainly not tourists.” Rasmussen said he would raise the matter with TTC CEO Andy Byford at a May meeting of the YQNA, which was scheduled for May 14 after the Mirror’s press deadline. The TTC has said it will have improved signs and staff at Union Station on hand to guide visitors to the replacement bus stop on Bay Street. Costs to construct a dedicated light rail line for the east waterfront have escalated to $370 million making it unlikely the project will begin without further government funding, Glaisek said. “Until there is a larger decision about what our transit funding priorities are, there’s not money to do that,” he said of the project which would extend to Cherry Street. City bylaw calls for crematoria to be 300 metres away from residential area >>>from page 1 grandfathered in, but now that they want a new crematorium, we don’t think it should be allowed.” Ward 27 Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam, in whose ward the residents live, has taken up their concerns, launching an appeal of the Ministry of the Environment’s decision to grant approval for the new crematorium. “We want to keep whatever harmful particulates are in the air out of the lungs of children, the elderly and those with compromised respiratory systems, who are the most vulnerable to this kind of thing,” she said. A City of Toronto harmonized bylaw that came into effect in April calls for crematoria to be located at least 300 metres from sensitive areas, a category that includes residential areas. Wong-Tam does not believe the new crematorium should be allowed to be grandfathered in given the city’s new bylaw. “When it comes to people’s health and trying to protect the

public, I don’t believe there should be a grandfathered clause (allowing the crematorium),” she said. “I don’t think it’s good enough for the Mount Pleasant Group to say ‘at one particular point, this (crematorium) would have been grandfathered in’ or ‘at one particular point, this would have met the city’s requirements.’” Mount Pleasant Group of Cemeteries assistant vicepresident of marketing and communications Rick Cowan said the new crematorium equipment is much cleaner than the existing equipment, which was installed in 1972. “What we’re doing is a very good thing,” he said. “We’re virtually eliminating emissions.” According to information on the Mount Pleasant Group’s website, emissions of arsenic, cobalt, lead and mercury would be reduced by more than 99 per cent through the installation of the new crematorium and,

while carbon monoxide emissions would more than double, they would still be less that 0.1 per cent of the Ministry of the Environment’s limit. “Emissions from our existing equipment are well below (Ministry of the Environment) levels and this new equipment will be below (emissions from the existing equipment),” Cowan said. Ward 22 Councillor Josh Matlow, in whose ward the crematorium sits, said that such assurances are not enough. “Almost clean is not completely clean,” he said. “A cemetery is a place to respect the dead, but it should also respect the living.” Cowan said the Mount Pleasant Group has extended an open invitation to speak with individuals who have concerns, but said “to be honest, none of them wanted to speak to us.” That runs counter to Boyd’s claims that she has been stymied in her efforts to make her concerns known.

Fashion show raises money for SickKids From cheers to tears JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com A group of York University students are donning some fancy threads in support the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). T h e Yo rk Un i ve r s i t y Portuguese Association (YUPA) will host the Runway to Hope fundraising fashion show at Tartu College, with proceeds going toward the SickKids Foundation. “We do an annual charity fashion show every year and always pick a different charity to donate to,” said event organizer Samatha DoRego. “We had a few ideas, but the majority vote was for SickKids because of the great work they do.” While the doctors and nurses at SickKids ensure patients receive the best possible care and treatment, funds raised for the SickKids Foundation help to fund everything from new equipment to research initiatives, with everyone from private

donors to grassroots organizations bringing in money. Runway to Hope will see 10 male and 10 female models showcasing outfits from stores such as Sirens, Marla’s, Roots, Peach Berserk and others. Those stores are lending the fashions to YUPA free of charge. “We basically go to the stores and see if they’d be willing to donate and a lot of stores are happy to help,” DoRego said. “When we told them we were doing it for SickKids, they wanted to donate more.” In addition to the funds raised through tickets sales, models will be auctioned off to boost the amount

being donated to SickKids. Following the fashion show, participants will go out on a group dinner date. “We’ll also be donating money from the bars and we’ll be selling bracelets at the show so people can show their support,” DoRego said. Runway to Hope will open with live entertainment, including singers and a DJ. DoRego said the event typically draws between 100 and 150 people and hopes this year’s fashion show draws a huge crowd. “It’s a good way to get people to come out and support a great charity while enjoying a great event and having fun,” she said. The event will take place at Tartu College, 310 Bloor St. W. Friday, May 17. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show will start at 8. School has gone through various cultural changes >>>from page 1 Clinton’s history, dovetailing what they learned with the curriculum in art, history and other subjects. “This is the third Clinton school that opened on this site and it opened in 1966,” said student Aaron Nobre, showcasing his knowledge of the school’s past. “The other two burned down.” The school has served as a reflection of the ever-changing community to which it caters. In recent years, the school has housed a diverse student body, reflecting the community’s multiculturalism, but that was not always the case.

“We knew the school had gone through some different waves of immigration, but we were surprised to discover how quickly it moved from one cultural background to another,” said current Clinton principal Wendy Hughes. “Now it’s a much more eclectic mix.” The school has sent plenty of distinguished alumni forth, including acclaimed human rights activist Alan Borovoy, journalist Morley Safer, singer-songwriter Jerry Gray of the Travellers, and Sam “The Record Man” Sniderman. Clinton Street Public School alumnus and former

City of Toronto councillor and TTC chair Howard Moscoe took a moment to reminisce as he attended the anniversary celebrations. “The school that’s here today isn’t the school we had when I was here,” said the former councillor, who attended Clinton from 1944 to 1953. “We had a boys’ school yard and a girls’ school yard, and the yard was totally cement.” He and his brother Ray, a fellow Clinton alumnus, noted the school was the most convenient place to play baseball in the area, which worked to the detriment of

his father. “We broke so many windows my father wound up just buying a bunch of sheets of glass and he’d bring one down and pay the caretaker to replace them,” he said. Former Clinton principal Joe Carlino said Clinton stands out for its arts programming. The school has benefited from a partnership with the Ontario College of Art and Design and from an endowment from alumnus and arts patron Beatrice Minden, the latter of which allows the school to bring two artists in each year to work with students.

But it wasn’t out of disinterest – this year’s Police Week theme is Walking the Digital Beat - A New Era of

Engagement. Chief Bill Blair said Police Week is about celebrating the relationship police have with Toronto residents. “One of the things we do in Police Week is we open up our facility and we make available to the public opportunities to come and engage with us,” Blair said. “Now we have the opportunity to engage virtually as

well as physically and it has enhanced our relationships and it has given us access to another generation of people in this city.” From Twitter to facebook, YouTube and more, police are using social media to aid them in their jobs, said keynote speaker Deputy Chief Peter Sloly. Sloly, who goes by the Twitter handle @deputySloly,

said in many ways his more than 4,000 followers know him better in the social media context. About 200 Toronto police officers have Twitter, facebook and YouTube accounts and social media can be used by officers to connect with residents, be alerted of situations, investigate crimes and to spread good news. From the Eaton Centre and Danzing Street shootings to the April 15 Boston Marathon bombings, Sloly said social media played an important role in investigating these events, and that trend will only get stronger. “(Social media) is a wonderful, powerful tool, but it comes with a dark side as well,” Sloly said. “Our policies, procedures, practices, training, structure, culture and our relationship with the criminal justice system and with the community that we serve have not caught up to where the digital age has taken us so we have to go carefully into this digital world, but we do

a social media strategy. “A year later, Ritesh is one of the most sought after speakers for every major public safety event in North America, he is now going to be consulting with major private industry as well as on a task force with (U.S.) President (Barak) Obama,” Sloly said. In 2012, the Toronto Police Service received 1,188 calls for service over social media, Sloly said. He called it “next gen (generation) 911. They are doing it whether we are ready or not,” Sloly said. “The challenge for us is to be able to respond.” Police Week is celebrated across the province from May 12 to 18. Eight police stations around the city will be celebrating Police Week with open houses. In a heavy, but realist depiction of how life can go from bad to worse when a teen leaves home is explored

in Young People’s Theatre’s latest show, La Fugue, a powerful piece created by Qui Va Là, in a co-production with SMCQ Jeunesse. La Fugue tells the story of central character Johann who leaves home and meets Noemie, who is part of a street gang called Wolf. The pair fall in love and Johann gets caught up in the dangerous world of gangs.

The entire story is told with music, performed by actors and musicians Félix Beaulieu-Duchesneau, Benoît Côté, Justin Laramée and Philippe Racine, who each play a variety of roles. This is an intense show with several dark scenes. The stor y makes the point that life on the street – mixing up with gangs, drugs,

prostitution – is a violent and terrifying world and not as glamorous as some teens think. This show is a powerful piece recommended for teens in grades eight to 12. It’s a great educational piece to create dialogue among teens. La Fugue runs until May 16 at Young People’s Theatre, 165 Front St. E. Tickets range from $15 to $20.
