Female volunteers need only apply! Rebuff not surprising: MPP JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Habitat for Humanity Toronto is looking for a few good women to build six semi-detached homes this fall. The organization launched its annual Women Build campaign at the Cambria Studio on Thursday, May 16 and is looking to get a team of 1,000 women together to build the homes.

Habitat for Humanity Toronto CEO Ene Underwood said the idea to have a women-only build originated in the U.S. in 1991 and has since expanded to 30 countries around the world. “A lot of women might be uncomfortable with the notion of building a house,” Underwood said. “It’s a fun, high-energy way for women to come together

and discover what they’re capable of.” The build will bring together a number of high-profile community leaders along with Women Build ambassadors, though all women are encouraged to participate. Those who want to take part are asked to raise a minimum of $500 in support of Habitat and can participate in as much of the >>>HIGH, page 12

In an interview Tuesday, Murray said he and Premier Kathleen Wynne had expected dissent from some politicians, regarding their opinions of the 11 proposed taxes and fees Metrolinx sought feedback on. Cabbagetown resident behind festival showcasing solo shows Tracey Erin Smith’s SoulOTheatre highlights kernels of truth JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

A

s a longtime lover of one-person shows, Cabbagetown resident Tracey Erin Smith is devoted to helping others share their stories. Smith is the creator of SoulOTheatre, a program that helps others develop their own solo theatre projects. She knows of what she speaks, having performed a number of her own pieces to critical acclaim, including The Burning Bush! and Two in the Bush! in venues across Canada and in New York City. Now, the downtown Toronto resident is leading a team of volunteers in putting on the SoulOTheatre Festival, which will bring a number of talented performers to the city to

perform their own pieces of solo theatre. She said the time for such a festival was ripe. “I first fell in love with solo theatre when I saw Lily Tomlin’s The Search for Intelligent Life in the Universe and I put on my own show for the first time in 1992,” she said. “I’ve been teaching it in Toronto since 2002 and it’s just exploded.” For Smith, the appeal of a one-person show comes through its stripped-down nature. The pieces are often – but not always – at least somewhat autobiographical, and they typically hold kernels of truth at their core. “It’s just the simple yet powerful idea of one human from the tribe who stands out to tell us what it is to be human,” she said. The SoulOTheatre Festival is a juried festival,

meaning only the crème de la crème made it through. The pieces vary in tone, ensuring the selections offer an array of themes and tones. “About half the pieces are autobiographical and the other half are not, and it’s half men, half women,” Smith said. While the on-stage portion of the festival will likely draw the biggest crowds, the event will also include a series of panels and workshops designed to help aspiring performers stage their own shows. “People love to take classes (in solo theatre) because it’s all about them,” she said. “I tell them ‘you’re the star, you’re the storyteller; I’ll help put you on stage.’” Smith is quick to shut down suggestions that some do not have a story

to tell. Given that human experiences are highly individual even as they often share universal similarities, she feels everyone has something worth sharing. “Even if you have an identical twin brother or sister, no one can tell your story like you can,” she said. The SoulOTheatre Festival will run at the Red Sandcastle Theatre, 922 Queen St. E. from today to Sunday. For more information, visit www. soulo.ca

Toronto French School student wins at national poetry contest

Khalil Mair takes home a $5,000 prize, earning $1,000 for his school’s library JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Toronto French School student Khalil Mair may be short on life experience, but he is certainly not short on talent. Mair, who is currently in Grade 9 at the Lawrence and Bayview avenues area school, recently won first prize in the national Poetry in Voice finals, taking home a $5,000 prize for himself and earning $1,000 for his school’s library. “What I love about poetry is that it manages to condense emotion and a strong message into such a short work,” he said. While Mair writes his own poetry based on his reactions to current events, like his fellow Poetry in Voice competitors, he was given a list of pre-published poems

from which to choose for the competition. His choice for the Englishlanguage poem was certainly unusual for a teenaged boy; he selected Elizabeth Bachinsky’s Wolf Lake, a harrowing piece that tackles the difficult subject of sexual abuse. “I read the first few lines and even though it was from a woman’s point of view, it was so incredibly powerful I just had to do it,” he said.

fully in the role To read the difficult poem, he had to place himself fully in the role of the poem’s narrator as she goes through a whirlwind of emotions in speaking of horrific violence. “The poem has a life of its own so it wouldn’t be right

Toronto French School grade 9 student Khalil Mair has taken first place in the bilingual category in the national Poetry in Voice finals.

for me to try to make it my own,” Mair said. “I had to only use my voice as a tool. I had to try to find

out where the energy in the poem peaks and make sure the power and tone of my voice got that across.”

As an entrant in the bilingual portion of the Poetry in Voice competition, Mair also had to read a French poem. He selected Albert Samain’s Il est d’etranges soirs for that portion of the competition, though he admitted he was not as naturally drawn to that work. “I liked it, but I mostly chose it because the competition has requirements where you have to read one poem written before the 20th century and one poem under 25 lines and that met the criteria,” he said. That Mair won in the Poetry in Voice bilingual stream is impressive in its own right. He only began attending

French school in Grade 7, when he entered the French stream at the Bayview Glen School. “I just decided I wanted a challenge and learning French was a good one,” he said. Mair is active at school as a member of the student council and the classical club. He also takes part in the model United Nations and is an avid debater. His win in the Poetry in Voice finals earned him some time with author Margaret Atwood, who imparted some wisdom to him and his fellow winners, pointing out that at their young ages, they must soak up experience in order to ensure their own work is informed. Mair beat out Elisabeth Sohier-Poirier of the Lycée Français de Toronto and Aisha Nafees of Montreal’s Westmount High School to take home first prize in the finals.

Pandas can help Toronto feel good

T

hey’re big, they’re cute and they could be two of the greatest things to happen to our city in decades. They are Da Mao and Er Shun, the two giant pandas on loan from China who are now on display at the Toronto Zoo in northeast Scarborough for the next five years. In a word, they are ambassadors. Ambassadors from China. They can serve as ambassadors to bring your family and friends from afar to Toronto. Beyond the economic benefits of increased tourism that the pandas will bring, we can also use them as a chance to start feeling good about ourselves and our city. We certainly could use that opportunity given the devastating first-round NHL playoff loss the Toronto Maple Leafs suffered at the hands of the other bears – the Boston Bruins. There has our view been some debate as to whether giant pandas are actually of the bear family, however, genetic testIncrease in ing indicates they are – so these tourism and particular bruins owe us. Local residents and tourists goodwill alike will have lots of opportunities to see Da Mao and Er Shun in the special Giant Panda Experience exhibit built just for them. It officially opened to the public on Saturday. Visitors can view the exhibit, which includes an interpretative centre, educational opportunities and giant-panda themed exhibits. Of course, the stars of the show will be the pandas themselves, and they seemed fine during the VIP launch of the exhibit late last week - munching on bamboo and looking cute as can be. The first time the Toronto Zoo hosted a panda exhibit was back in 1985 when our panda guests were Qing Qing and Quan Quan. They only stayed three months that time and the zoo broke all previous attendance records during their visit. The world is a different place now, and so is Canada’s relationship with China, but what hasn’t changed in 25 years is the fact that our city and our zoo are now the focal point of national and international attention when it comes to giant pandas. It opens doors for everyone in the city to welcome family and friends, be they from Oakville or the other side of the world, to come and see the pandas. And once our guests have arrived, we can also show them some of the other great things Toronto has to offer. For more on the pandas go to our website at www. insidetoronto.com and visit the Hot Topics section.

Time for Ford Nation to call it quits The trouble with writing a weekly column that appears on Thursday is that when a mayor finds himself in allegedly hideous and frankly filthy trouble on the previous Friday, it’s tough to find something new to say. So it is with Mayor Rob Ford, and revelation last Friday of the cellphone video that according to two respected journalists at the Toronto Star alleges to show our mayor smoking crack cocaine. Earlier in the cycle, I might have joined the chorus of every other columnist working in Toronto media, and said it was time for the mayor to resign. I’ll take a slightly different tack, and speak directly to Ford Nation. It might be time, Ford Nation, to call it quits. Regardless of what happens with the video, it has come time to face some facts. The mayor, when you elected him, came with a

david nickle the city certain amount of baggage including a 1999 impaired driving conviction in Florida. There was a certain amount of baggage that you were willing to forgive, because you are a forgiving bunch. Some commentators say, in fact, that Rob Ford’s foibles have been a part of his charm to Ford Nation: that it shows him to be a regular guy, a guy that sometimes screws up, and not one of the elites. It is time, Ford Nation, to give up on forgiveness – at least inasmuch as that forgiveness translates to continued fealty, and worse, identification. Because Rob Ford is not like you. You do not leave important work meetings to coach football; you don’t court disaster by ignoring

potential conflicts-ofinterest in your job. You don’t, as a rule, embarrass yourselves, your family and your community. You are stand-up people, and you don’t need to stand up for this. In giving up on forgiving our mayor, you need not give up on the agenda he ran on. There are other good fiscally conservative politicians in the wings – many of whom have assisted in our mayor’s fulfillment of his agenda this term. In 2014, you will likely have the opportunity to support one them to continue that agenda. Call this, Ford Nation, your moment of clarity.

One transit authority needed said reader As a Provincial agency, Metrolinx gets its funding from the province and thus is not impartial to the funding decisions that must and can only be decided by the province. Unfortunately for the past 40 years, all political parties and their incumbant politicians from all three levels of government have mismanaged and failed our cities when it comes to infrastructure and funding. The amalgamation of all the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area area public transit authorities, especially the TTC, and GO, TTC Halton, Peel, York and Durham into one regional transit authority is a must. CITY CENTRE IN BRIEF

CHORUS PRESENTS TWO SHOWS ◗COMMUNITY The Common Thread Community Chorus of Toronto will spread a little love with a pair of upcoming shows Saturday. The chorus aims to build community and supports a variety o f g ro u p s and organizations through its concerts. Its upcoming piece, Songs of Love, Hope and Optimism, will be complemented by a silent auction. The shows will take place at the Al Green Theatre, 750 Spadina Avenue, with a matinee at 1:30 p.m. and an evening show at 7:30 p.m. For tickets or information, visit www.commonthreadchorus.ca K TO BE DEBATED AT FUTURE MEETING ◗STATION

A community consultation meeting will be set up so residents can give their input on a controversial proposal that would see the historic Postal Station K building replaced with a 26-storey mixed use building.

The building at 2384 - 2388 Yonge St. north of Eglinton Avenue was constructed in 1936 and bears the insignia of King Edward VIII; the building is also the former site of Montgomery’s Tavern, headquarters of the short-lived Upper Canada rebellion of 1837 under William Lyon Mackenzie, who was the first mayor of Toronto. Postal Station K is a national historic site and is marked by a Monument Board of Canada plaque, according to a city planning report. However, the building is not safe from demolition because it is owned by the federal government. The development will see 234 residential units and 1,715 square metres (18,460 square feet) of retail and commercial space. “The development includes the retention of the two-storey front portion of Station K and proposes its reuse for retail and commercial uses,” the planning report said. “The application also proposes to redesign the Station K forecourt along Yonge Street, Montgomery Avenue and Helendale Avenue as a publicly accessible open space.” At the May 14 meeting of North York Community council, coun-

cillors agreed to set up a community consultation meeting but a date has not yet been set. COMMUNITY YARD SALE SATURDAY Residents in Cabbagetown South are offering goods for sale with its annual Community Yard Sale. A large area of downtown Toronto bounded by Carlton Street to the north, Shuter Street to the south, Sherbourne Street to the west and Parliament Street to the east will be decked out with residents selling their gently used goods. Central Neighbourhood House will serve up hot dogs to yard sale shoppers while supplies last, in exchange for a non-perishable food item. The event is slated to take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, with Sunday set aside as a rain date. For details, visit www.cabbagetownsouth.ca

The City of Toronto is asking residents whether dogs should run free in some parks during early morning or late night “courtesy hours”. Proposed courtesy periods, if t h e c i t y ’s rules are amended, would happen in parks where fenced dog exist areas do not from 6 to 8 a.m. and 9 to 11 p.m., Monday to Friday, and from 7 to 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. to midnight on weekends and holidays. Locations for these parks would be approved based on existing criteria for selecting fenced off-leash sites. The city has posted a survey (at www.toronto.ca/parks/engagement/offleashpark-survey.htm) it says residents can fill out until May 31. Results will be reported back to a meeting of the committee.

One in three Canadian kids are left on the side of the rink In Canada, one in three families cannot afford to enrol their children in organized sport or recreation activities because of financial barriers (Vision Critical 2011). Six years ago, Marlee Stein wanted to learn to skate, but she didn’t think it would be possible coming from a family of four kids and facing the struggles of a parent battling illness. Through a family support service in her community, Marlee and her family were introduced to Canadian Tire Jumpstart. The Jumpstart program supported Marlee’s skating lessons and skate Canada membership through financial assistance. A year after lacing up her skates for the first time, Marlee decided to turn her desire to skate into a goal – to one-day join the Canadian Olympic Figure Skating team. Through Jumpstart, Marlee is able to continue her skating lessons and is working to achieve this dream. “Jumpstart helped me get the lessons I needed to enter some very challenging provincial and national figure skating competitions in Canada,” says Marlee Stein.

“With all the lessons I have taken, I hope it opens up opportunities to eventually become a part of the Canadian Olympic team.” “The benefits of kids participating in sports affects their entire lives,” says Johnny Misley, President, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. “Jumpstart is dedicated to removing barriers so financially disadvantaged children can simply participate, and ultimately pusue their dreams.” Kids who are able to participate in organized sport and recreation,

outside school hours, gain many short and long term benefits including increased self esteem, greater self confidence, leadership skills, and better grades. Despite the financial hardships many Canadian families face, there is a way to get kids into the game, no matter what barrier. By covering the cost of registration, equipment and/or transportation, Canadian Tire Jumpstart has helped 570,000 (and counting) children like Marlee participate in the sport of their choice. Help kids from your community by visiting Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Atmosphere, Mark’s and Canadian Tire Gas+ stores as well as Pita Pit locations throughout the month of May to donate $2 in exchange for a red ball, with 100 per cent of all donations going to help kids play. The May campaign will be celebrated on Jumpstart Day on Saturday, May 25, with fun activities taking place at participating Canadian Tire Retail stores across the country, including charity barbeque’s or GoClean waterless car washes. Visit jumpstart.canadiantire.ca to learn more.

All hands on deck for marine unit open house JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com It will be all hands on deck when the Toronto police Marine Unit invites the public to come in and check out its fleet as part of Doors Open Toronto. The Marine Unit boasts 57 personnel members who are responsible for an area spanning roughly 460 square miles of Lake Ontario water stretching from the Etobicoke Creek to the Rouge River. Its catchment area includes the Toronto Islands and Billy Bishop Airport, and its officers are often called into the city to conduct water rescues and carry out other marine police duties along the city’s many waterways. “We’re basically responsible for anything that happens on or near the water in the city or in a large area on Lake Ontario,” said Const. Scott Cornett. The Doors Open tour will include a walk through the

Marine Unit’s boathouse where the public can check out the fleet. The Marine Unit boasts an array of boats, including a 15-tonne vessel that can serve as a mobile command unit, four rigid hull inflatable boats for quick responses and its piece de resistance, a circa 1939 mahogany boat used predominantly to transport VIPs. “It’s probably the oldest piece of police equipment still being used in North America and it was made for Lake Ontario with a deep V hull that slices through the waves,” Cornett said. “If we continue to maintain this boat, it will outlast any of our other boats down here.” The fleet also includes a rough water boat that will self-correct, allowing it to remain upright in even the worst conditions. The selection of boats allow the Marine Unit to carry out all manner of aquatic policing duties from search and rescue

operations to transporting people to or from the Toronto Islands in case of emergency to towing and salvage operations. “We also have a 10-man dive team that can use either SCUBA or surface-supplied air if we need to get down into the lake,” Cornett said. While the Marine Unit does not often deal with violent crimes, the violent lake waters and often brutal conditions in Lake Ontario make their job a unique challenge. “I’ve been out in 18-foot seas and (the officers) have to learn to operate in the conditions they’re faced with,” Cornett said. He noted that dangerous water is often overlooked as a threat, adding the Canadian Navy lost more ships to bad weather in the Second World War than in any single conflict. While Lake Ontario is not as treacherous as the open sea, officers in the Marine Unit have to deal with their share of

terrible weather conditions. “We’ve had people transfer out of here because they can’t handle rough water or they can’t handle seeing their first bad drowning, but it’s the same as any other unit, where people transfer out after seeing a bad homicide.” The Marine Unit keeps track of goings-on on the water through use of regular radio channels and a special emergency distress channel, as well as security cameras positioned throughout the

waterfront. As the third-largest Marine Unit in North America, it must deal with its fair share of drownings. “The biggest killer in Lake Ontario is the cold water,” Cornett said. “You get the veteran boaters out there who know what they’re doing but a lot of people just aren’t prepared for any situation.” The Toronto police Marine Unit will welcome the public into its facility at 259 Queens

Quay W. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Several other buildings in Toronto Harbour will also be open to the public. For a full listing of participating buildings, visit www. toronto.ca/doorsopen/2013

Oolagen fundraiser May 30 JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Over its 45 years in operation, downtown Toronto-based mental health services provider Oolagen has helped countless youth and families overcome mental health issues and conflict. The organization is gearing up to host its third annual fundraising gala to ensure its programs continue to assist those in need to ensure they can find a path to success. “For us, mental health is very broadly defined,” said Oolagen CEO Lydia SaiChew. “Adolescence is a very challenging time for most people as they’re going from being children who are nurtured and cared for into adulthood where they become independent.” That transition, she said, can lead to conflict with parents or guardians. While many of the youth Oolagen serves have diagnosed mental health issues, many are simply expe-

riencing difficulties at home, in school or in some cases, with the law. To cover a wide base of issues, the organization offers everything from walk-in services to long-term counseling and residential programs. “We want to help youth figure out what their strengths are and what they do well,” Sai-Chew said. “What they’re normally told is what they can’t do, so we work on what they can do.” The upcoming fundraiser, dubbed Night of Light – Engage the Child, Unite the Family, will feature hosts Colin Mochrie and Deb McGrath, honourary event chair Ken Taylor, whose story was retold in the film Argo, and 2013 Oolagen Award recipient and TSN celebrity Michael Landsberg. “We’re hoping to get a full house out because we have a great night planned,” SaiChew said. Funds raised at Night of Light will go toward increas-

ing the services Oolagen can provide while also funding improvements to Oolagen’s residential homes. Oolagen serves about 800 youth per year and the difference it makes in their lives can be astounding. Oolagen clients and sisters Nicole and Danielle have benefited from the organization’s programs for more than three years and have found support there they had not found elsewhere. “Before coming to Oolagen, I was struggling with anxiety and depression, which took away a lot of things from my life,” Danielle said. “... I knew they were always there if I needed them.” Nicole began using Oolagen shortly after her sister and said the agency helped her overcome her own struggles. “The agency is very giving and supportive and they don’t judge you,” she said.

High profile women sign on to ‘Women Build’ campaign

Women Build Ambassador and former Habitat for Humanity Toronto board chair Toni Rossi, left, Toronto councillor Krystin Wong-Tam, Habitat for Humanity Toronto board chair Martin Blake, Toronto councillor and chair of the affordable housing committee Ana Bailao and Habitat for Humanity Toronto’s newly-appointed CEO Ene Underwood announce the launch of a $1 million fundraising campaign for Habitat for Humanity Toronto and this year’s Women Build campaign.

>>>from page 1 11-day build as they choose. Underwood said women may feel a natural affinity toward the partner families who move into Habitat for Humanity homes. “Many women recognize that a large number of Habitat homeowners are single-parent families, so in a lot of cases, it’s women helping women,” she said. The Women Build initiative benefits from the support of Toronto councillors such as Kristyn Wong-Tam, Karen Stintz and Ana Bailao, who have pledged to pitch in. Ambassadors include actress and celebrity handywoman Mag Ruffman, gourmet cook Rose Reisman, Breakfast Television cohost Jennifer Valentyne and more. “It’s like a big party,” said Ruffman, who has taken part

seen as “man’s work.” “Carpentry’s just like sewing; it’s all geometry and piecing things together, but louder,” she said. In addition to collecting commitments from 1,000 women, the Women Build campaign aims to raise $1 million for Habitat for Humanity Toronto through fundraising and sponsorship. Those who move into the houses will benefit from having safe houses to call their own. Habitat partner families demonstrate financial need but still pay for their homes through interest-free mortgages, and each member of a partner family must put in 500 hours of work with Habitat for Humanity as part of their payment.

system lags wA Transit in service coverage recent study comparing Toronto and Chicago’s transit systems finds the American city is far superior when it comes to service coverage. The comparison study by the Martin Prosperity Institute, part of the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, found the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) was far more likely than the TTC to have a tran-

sit connection within 500 metres – the equivalent of a 10-minute walk – of a regular city block. The comparison between the sister cities also found Chicago, which operates eight rapid transit lines, has far better downtown coverage enabling commuters from the outer suburbs to travel long distances without having to switch vehicles. Conversely, Toronto riders often require multiple transfers to get downtown.

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT While the study, which was posted on the Martin Prosperity Institute’s blog, finds both cities’ transit systems under-delivering on transit accessibility, it argues Toronto, though larger in population than Chicago, fails to connect the city as well as it should and needs urgent expansion.

Keelesdale Park wA bridge tunnelling update providing alternate access to Keelesdale Park during tunnelling construction for the EglintonScarborough Crosstown light rail transit line is scheduled to be finished by June. When it is complete, the bridge will be the only public entry point into the park, located at 2801 Eglinton Ave. W., which Metrolinx is using as a construction staging area for the tunnel excavation of

the Crosstown’s underground portion. Visit www.toronto. ca/eglinton Wrap party for Big wTheRace GTHA Centennial College students who produced an eight-part web series about commuting tribulations in the Toronto region, are set to commemorate the project’s conclusion. The Big Race GTHA was conceived and produced by the students, all of whom

are enrolled at Centennial’s Mortimer Avenue campus. The series features three contestants vying to traverse the transit system in the least amount of time. The students have scheduled a wrap party for the series in early June. To see the posted videos, visit www.bigraceblog.com Rahul Gupta is the Mirror’s transit reporter. LOOSE BALL The relatively obscure sport of Floorball had its moment in the limelight this past weekend with the Mattamy Athletic Centre hosting a huge international tournament. In this game in the elite adult’s division on Sunday, Toronto United’s Cory Matthews battles for a loose ball with Hamilton’s Neil Barnes. Hamilton won 3-0. Staff photo/ DAN PEARCE

‘Good ideas put forward’: Murray >>>from page 1 for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). “If you go into a conversation only looking for people to agree with you, you’ll be most sadly disappointed,” said Murray. “I think there have been some very good ideas put forward by most municipalities and there’s been some, as we expected, who haven’t agreed, and we respect that.” During a marathon Toronto City Council meeting during the second week of May, councillors voted to reject staff recommendations on the Metrolinx revenue tools and to support a Scarborough subway line to replace a fullyfunded light rail transit line already agreed to by the province and Metrolinx. Murray said Toronto council was free to re-visit its master agreement with Metrolinx for four provincially funded light rail lines, including the Scarborough LRT, so long as it took care of any extra costs associated with a change in the plans. “Toronto has invested in

subways and transit before and nothing in the The Big Move stops them from building anything,” he said. “If the city wants to bring other projects and proposals it wants to pay for, it is quite capable of making those decisions.” Murray also said the Ontario Liberals would continue to support electrifying the Union Pearson Express (UP) air rail link, but insisted it wouldn’t happen until after the 2015 Toronto Pan American Games at the earliest. While mentioning 2017 as a potential target date for completion, he said “clean” diesel trains ordered by Metrolinx will run along what will be the city’s first express rapid transit connection between Pearson airport and Union Station when UP starts operating in time for the Pan Am Games. “We have to have the UP service in place for the Pan Am Games, which was part of our commitment,” he said. “It is simply not possible to electrify with enough reliability by 2015.”
