In its landmark 25th year, the Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life is looking to paint Church Street red. For the past quarter century, the walk has allowed people to show support for those living with HIV/AIDS while raising awareness of the illness and bringing in funds for the AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT). To mark the milestone year, organizers have decided to expand the event’s reach with a full week of activities and

MYTH: THE AIRPORT IS UNWILLING TO PAY ITS FAIR SHARE OF TAXES. FACT: WE’VE ALREADY PAID

OF THE AMOUNT RECOMMENDED BY AN INDEPENDENT ADVISORY PANEL.

MPAC, the municipal property assessor, thinks City Council should tax the airport property as if it could be a high-rise condo development. We agree with City of Toronto onto staf staff, that this is an “erroneously high assessment value1.” To date, we’ve already paid 100% of the amount of Payments in Lieu of Taxes recommended by an advisory panel. As for asking our passengers to pay more, we’re an airport, not a condo development site, and we don’t think we should be taxed like one. 1

Director wraps up filming for first feature film JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Despite a series of setbacks, director Cody Campanale’s first feature film is well on its way to being completed. Campanale, who lives downtown, recently wrapped up filming on Fragile Minds, a dark revenge drama featuring a cast of up-and-comers. It follows the story of Jack, a womanizer with self-destructive tendencies, as he falls for a woman who is seeking revenge for the fact that Jack wronged her sister. It focused on the disconnectedness of the 20-something generation, sharing the same sensibilities as the acclaimed but controversial 1995 movie Kids. “The film has a lot of dark moments; there’s a lot of sexual content, a lot of dark, violent imagery and drug use,” the director said while on set at the Monarch Tavern. “There have been a lot of very, very tough days because of the dark emotional places the actors have to go.” Despite its rough, at-times raunchy nature underscored by hand-held cameras in

low-lit settings, Fragile Minds has its moments of levity as well. “I think it’s something young people will get,” he said. “We live in a hook-up culture and that’s something people can relate to.” Having a team made up largely of emerging talent both behind and in front of the camera adds to the film’s lack of glamour and certainly helped Campanale lead them through grueling days and nights on set. While cast and crew were gung-ho for the project, it did not come without its challenges, particularly for a film crew working on a tight budget and even tighter schedule. “One of the trucks we rented (for the production) had bedbugs in it so that set us back two days,” he said. “We lost a location and we lost some extras because of that.”

Teaching points

Making matters worse, Campanale’s apartment – slated to be used as the editing suite for the film – had to be sprayed after the bedbugs managed to make their way there. A leak in one of the trucks led to some scrambling as well as the crew worked to salvage equipment. Fragile Minds may be controversial, but Campanale notes it has come a long way since he first wrote it as a play. “It was really raw and unforgiving and I attribute that to my youthful, angsty feelings at the time,” Campanale said. “Even when it was a play, there was a lot of video footage mixed up. I always knew this should be a film instead of a play, and I think with the film, we’ve really found the heart of the story.” The film was funded privately, said the producer, former Annex resident and current Roncesvalles Village resident Jeff Hanes. He noted that that actually helped bring more realism to the production. “It really helped us cre-

atively,” he said. “Because of the limited funds we have, we had to make choices that have helped with the reality, and reality’s very important for this film.”

Once the editing process is completed, the production team hopes to bring Fragile Minds to the festival circuit as part of efforts to land a distribution deal.

Reverend Will Ingram is perfectly at home at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in front of pews full of people, but his normal appearances are nothing like the one he’ll put on this Sunday. On Sept. 15, Ingram will perform with his band, the Sanctuary Wrecks, for the release of their new CD, A Symmetry of Being. The band includes a number of talented Toronto musicians, including jazz pianist Jordan Klapman, jazz guitarist Tony Quarrington, electric bass cellist Michael Lemiski, drummer Glenn McCullough and instrumentalist and producer Michael Koecher. “In some ways, we’re more a musical collective

than a band,” Ingram said. “Different parts of the music draw on different instruments and different people’s contributions. I wrote most of the pieces on the album, but the contributions of the others have taken them to places I couldn’t have.” Ingram, who lives in the Junction area grew up with music, studying at the Royal Conservatory of Music and singing in a boys’ choir as a youngster before starting to play guitar at the age of 16. While A Symmetry of Being traverses a number

of genres from classical to rock to alternative to folk to pop, the source material comes from Ingram’s own experiences. “One of the pieces was written very much based on one of my own times of reflection,” he said, referring to the passing of his mother and his father-in-law over the past couple of years. Another piece, Shards, was based in part on Ingram’s role with the church. Two ministers “As a minister, you conduct a lot of funerals for people and Shards moves through quite a number of rhythmic and musical moods,” he said. “People’s lives are full of so many experiences, but people don’t always see all the elements that go into

their loved ones’ lives (at a funeral.)” Though the Sanctuary Wre c k s f e a t u re s t w o Presbyterian ministers in Ingram and McCullough, the instrumental songs are not religious in nature. “The songs are instrumental so we’re not dictating to people what the message of the piece entirely is,” he said. While the music itself does not contain lyrics, Ingram penned poems to go along with each which will be read as introductions to the songs at Sunday’s concert. The album will be launched at a concert at St. Andrew’s, 73 Simcoe St., at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15.

Ontario Liberals must not take Toronto for granted

Write us

P

rovincial politicians are back to work at Queen’s Park this week, and for Toronto residents there will be something we haven’t had for 10 years – a Progressive Conservative MPP representing a Toronto riding. Doug Holyday, who until the Aug. 1 byelection was Toronto’s deputy mayor and councillor for Etobicoke Centre’s Ward 3, is the first PC from Toronto in the legislature since Liberal Dalton McGuinty was first elected premier in 2003, replacing the Tory government of Ernie Eves. Since then, Toronto’s representation has been decidedly Liberal, with a smattering of NDP MPs. Now we see a legislature with five NDP MPPs, one PC and 17 Liberals among our 23 ridings. With Premier Kathleen Wynne representing Toronto riding our view of Don Valleythe West in the Liberal minority government as well, we Holyday will expect the needs of our city to be offer balance given the priority they deserve at Queen’s Park. at Queen’s Park A first step took place last week when Minister of Transportation Glen Murray announced funding for an extension of the Bloor-Danforth subway line from Kennedy station to the Scarborough Town Centre. This was a big issue during August’s byelections, particularly in the riding of Scarborough-Guildwood (which stayed Liberal in a race won by Mitzie Hunter). Regardless of whether one thinks replacing the aging Scarborough RT with a subway is the right or wrong decision, what it shows is the political balance shifting in the city to a point where Toronto’s support can no longer be taken for granted by the Liberals. With his experience as Toronto’s deputy mayor, we’ll be looking at Holyday to bring his perspective to a number of issues including government spending as he has a well-deserved reputation of looking after taxpayers’ money. Given the riding he represents is right on the border of the Mississauga gas power plant that was controversially cancelled by the Liberals, we also want to see Holyday holding the government to account on exactly how much was spent on that decision. Holyday is deeply respected and passionate not only about Etobicoke but all of Toronto. Having an experienced and level-headed PC with a strong understanding of the issues of the entire city bodes well for the upcoming session at Queen’s Park.

Accountability, good journalism essential to democracy Given the hearings, trials and appeals that Mayor Rob Ford has gone through over the past three years, it’s hard to imagine a lower-stakes game than the Ontario Press Council hearings that took place Monday. If the Globe and Mail and Toronto Star are found to have behaved unethically in pursuing stories about the mayor and his brother. Doug, they’ll have to publish the scolding decisions in full. No one’s talking about throwing them out of their newspaper boxes. But wouldn’t you know it? Out of the second half of the hearing came one of the most cogent – and dispiriting – statements of the health of our body politic to come along in years. Specifically, it came from complainant Connie Harrison, who objected to the Globe and Mail’s story alleging Doug Ford once

david nickle the city ran a hashish distribution business in central Etobicoke. She, however, demands more than the Globe has been able to provide, being as none of the sources who spoke about the alleged Ford hashish business were willing to be identified. Not enough Assurances from editors and reporters that the sources had been vetted, and their fears of the consequences of revealing their names were real, didn’t wash with Harrison. The Globe should have betrayed its sources, submitted its reporter’s notes to a third party, or failing that, simply ask for its reporter’s resignation. Bottom line: whatever credibility the Globe had

managed to earn over the decades reporting and publishing the news of the day didn’t count to her. By reporting as much of the story that it thought it could without squaring the circle with unwillingly named sources, the Globe and Mail did only harm to the city. Not feeling the love Now, we journalists have never enjoyed the love we feel we deserve from the public, and Harrison’s opinions and feelings are her own. But they are not only her own, in this divided city. The mayor and his brother take pains to paint their critics in the media as partisan liars, whose freedom-of-information requests are signs of impertinence rather than diligence. Is that narrative taking hold? Not overall, hopefully.

The accountability provided by good journalism is, as was stated by both Globe editor John Stackhouse and earlier in the day by Toronto Star editor-in-chief Michael Cooke, essential to the functioning of a healthy democracy. It’s also fragile. Reporters and editors cannot compel testimony or proceed with criminal charges if they believe they’re warranted. They can’t use wiretaps. They can’t enter premises. They cannot, always, deliver 100 per cent of an important story as fast as their readers might wish. With all its imperfections, however, good reporting sheds light on matters that the public should know about, and that’s a vital function – even if sometimes that light isn’t as bright or constant as some of us might wish.

Province continues after-school funding A boost in funding from the provincial government will ensure more kids across Ontario have access to afterschool programs this year. The Premier Kathleen Wynne government has pledged $13 million this year to Ontario’s After School Program, an increase of $500,000 over last year and $3 million more than the province provided in 2011. Provincial Tourism, Culture and Sport Minister Michael Chan said that number would swell to $13.5 million next year. The funding will support sports, arts and crafts, personal health and wellness education and nutrition programs offered by not-for-

profit organizations across Ontario. Chan announced the new spending at the Toronto Kiwanis Boys and Girls Club on Spruce Street (in the Gerrard and Sumach streets area) last Thursday. “The (Ontario After School) Program right now reaches over 20,000 kids,” Chan said. “With this additional money, it helps another 650 (children.)” In addition to boosting the funding, Chan said his government was committing to supplying the funding for at least three years, ensuring that the organizations providing after-school programming and support to kids know they will have stable funds over a longer term. With that promise, he said, “organizations like the Boys

and Girls Club can plan much better.” Toronto Kiwanis Boys and Girls Clubs Executive Director Ian Edward said the funding has been more than welcome as his organization works to provide programming for youngsters – particularly those in traditionally underserved areas such as Regent Park/Cabbagetown and Trinity Bellwoods. “Having the funding maintained for three years is great for us,” he said. “We’ve gone year-to-year funding our programs, so we’ve had to hire staff at the beginning of the year not knowing whether we’d be able to keep them on. It’s great to have some continuity to it.”

Revitalization plans for Alexandra Park, Atkinson Co-op move forward ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com

O C C U PA N C Y S P R I N G 2 0 1 4

Welcome to the Towns on Rumsey! Why redefined? This limited collection of luxury townhomes is anything but ordinary. Located in the distinguished neighbourhood of South Leaside, these townhomes

A report recommending zoning amendments and demolition applications to accommodate a massive revitalization of the Alexandra Park and Atkinson Housing Co-operative has been unanimously passed by Toronto and East York Community Council. The plan, which is slated to go before full council Oct. 8, will revitalize Alexandra Park and Atkinson Housing Co-operative with zero displacement, see the construction of a bigger community centre and add parks to the area. Coming up with a plan of this scope with the input of residents there is groundbreaking, said Trinity-Spadina Councillor Adam Vaughan, in whose ward the co-op stands.“It is astonishing to see how powerful neighbourhoods are when you trust them,” Vaughn said, follow-

ing the community council meeting Tuesday. Council’s vote green lights putting shovels in the ground, but Vaughan said the revitalization of Alexandra Park and Atkinson Housing Co-operative will be a 15-year process. Council approval marks a major milestone in a process that began during Vaughan’s very first campaign for council. “It started on my first walkthrough of the neighbourhood. It was clear there were the same challenges that plague public housing, but it was evident there was something different about the neighbourhood,” he said. After years of monthly and sometimes weekly meetings, Vaughan said it became clear to him and eventually to the Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) that if they could get the land into the hands of the residents, amazing things could happen to the community. “We had a good idea we

could fix the challenges in the community,” Vaughan said. Deputations were made by a number of residents of the Alexandra Park and Atkinson Housing Co-operative, all expressing how excited they are about the revitalization of their community. “All the way along people said this could not be done, as far back as the 1990s,” said Toronto Centre-Rosedale Councillor Pam McConnell said. “All of these years later we have Atkinson co-op doing an incredible job of managing their own property and community… I am really very pleased with the leadership of the councillor and the leadership of the community.” Resident Ingrid Hart said the revitalization will bring about increased safety, a place where children can play and the community can get to know each other.

‘What was going through their mind’: Const. Mills ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com

Members of Toronto’s graffiti community turned against two of their own after a memorial mural for fallen Canadian soldiers was vandalized. The “Highway of Heroes” mural, in the laneway at the rear of the Coroner’s Building

near Yonge and College streets, was designed by five teens from the Flemingdon neighbourhood in the summer of 2010. Toronto Police Const. Scott Mills and graffiti artist Jessey Pacho oversaw the project. “It was a message of respect for fallen soldiers and their families and it was a cry for world peace,” Mills said of

“It pretty much brought me to tears,” he said. “This is a complete disrespect to all those who’ve served and protected our country and paid the ultimate sacrifice.” Mills said he has a good idea of who the vandals are. “And it came about through the graffiti community... reaching out to me,” he said. “They know how much this means and they won’t stand for this.” The two vandals could face a criminal charge of mischief. “I’m hoping that when they are located that I will get the opportunity to speak with them directly and just find out what was going through their mind when they did this,” Mills said. “Let’s change some minds here, let’s do some educating and let’s make sure this never happens again.” Mills noted he’s also open to the idea of getting the vandals involved in restoring the mural. Karen Stintz, who was not at last week’s Scarborough subway announcement, wants more information about the plan. Last Friday, the TTC chair sent a letter to Metrolinx chair Rob Prichard seeking “clarity” on the proposal. Stintz wants confirmation the $1.4 billion project adheres to the terms of the city’s light rail master agreement with Metrolinx, which was re-opened in July following a vote by council – including Stintz – to shelve the Scarborough LRT in favour of a three-stop subway.
