Parties line up candidates for Toronto-Centre byelection Though no date has been set for the byelection to see who will succeed Bob Rae as Toronto Centre MP, all four major parties have selected candidates for the race. Rae stepped down from his post in June to take on a role as chief negotiator for the Matawa First Nations communities in Northern Ontario, working

with them as they work with the province on the Ring of Fire mining project. Both the Liberals and NDP selected their candidates at nomination meetings on Sunday. The Liberals have tabbed Else Chrystia Freeland, former Globe and Mail and Financial Times journalist and author

of Plutocrats: The Rise of the New Global Super-Rich and the Fall of Everyone, as their candidate of choice while the NDP selected former Toronto Star and Globe and Mail columnist and best-selling author Linda McQuaig to represent them. On Tuesday, the Conservative Party of Canada nominated

lawyer Geoff Pollock, who has also worked extensively in the financial sector and served as a Canadian Army Reservist. The Green Party has also dipped into the journalism pool for its candidate, with John Deverell, former Southern Ontario Newsmedia Guild president and founding treasurer of Fair Vote Canada.

Having learned from the example set by her grandmother, Lawrence Park area resident Sara Creaghan is doing what she can to ensure young people in foster care have a chance at a post-secondary education. Creaghan’s grandmother attended university back when very few women were given the encouragement or opportunity to do so. That resolve has stuck with Creaghan to this day, nearly 20 years after her grandmother passed away. “She was living in a small town in New Brunswick and never had a lot of money, but that never killed her spirit,” Creaghan said. To commemorate her grandmother, Creaghan started the Grammie Project, which offers tuition money for youngsters who have gone through the foster care system, plus a lot more. She has funded the project out of her own pocket – she started setting aside some money every year after her grandmother’s passing – and it has made a huge difference in the lives of those who have >>>GRAMMIE, page 7

Peter Oundjian returns for 10th year as TSO conductor JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Going into his 10th season with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO), conductor and music director Peter Oundjian knows it can still be an uphill battle to get the general public to embrace classical repertoires. That won’t stop the Annex resident from trying. Oundjian is eager to get the TSO’s upcoming 2013/14 season underway and hopes to continue to reach out to new audiences. “We always try to strike a good balance,” he said. “We’re trying to get people to realize we’re not playing Beethoven week after week after week.” Under Oundjian’s guidance, the TSO makes a point of branching out and remaining accessible while still performing top-notch symphonic pieces. From classical to pop

culture, the orchestra aims to provide something for everyone. “We have programs where we blend film and music where we show films and play around that,” he said. “We try to include performances for people who want to come out and listen to the orchestra but don’t feel ready to take on a Mahler symphony.” The orchestra also delves into the pop music world, both in terms of repertoire – performances based on the music of Simon and Garfunkel stands as one example from this season’s program – and in terms of accompanists. T h i s y e a r’s p r o g r a m includes performances from a diverse array of guests ranging from acclaimed singersongwriter Rufus Wainwright to violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman. “We can’t stand this elitism thing,” Oundjian said, referring to the attitude many

people have of a night at the symphony. “We’re just a bunch of really fun-loving people playing great music. We don’t think of ourselves (as being) any different than rock musicians or jazz musicians.” He added that audience members need not dress up to take in a show and pointed

out that tickets are nowhere near as expensive as those who have always thought of the TSO as a hoity-toity institution Oundjian was born in Toronto but moved to the UK at the age of five, which shaped his career aspirations – toward sports. “I wanted to be a profes-

sional soccer player as a boy but I practiced the violin too much and had knee problems,” he said. He came back to Toronto while he was performing with the Tokyo String Quartet and fell back in love with the city. He continued playing violin until a repetitive stress injury forced him to give it up in 1995. “It was impossible to play at a level I was happy with,” he said. While ensuring that there is something to appeal to classical music neophytes is high on his to-do list, Oundjian wants to push the boundaries with his musical selections, with some very involved pieces on the schedule. “People know Beethoven, but I love when we try something different and people say ‘ok, I’m going to trust Peter and the symphony on this one,’” he said. When not tackling his responsibilities for the TSO,

Raise Your Voice with Avril Lavigne at Women’s College JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com An innovative new campaign is encouraging people in and around Toronto to give their vocal chords a workout in support of Women’s College Hospital. The Women’s College Hospital Foundation has teamed up with pop rocker Avril Lavigne for the Raise Your Voice initiative. The campaign will allow Torontonians to step inside a portable soundproof booth and sing along to the chorus of Lavigne’s ballad ‘Keep Holding On’. Raise Your Voice is designed primarily as an awarenessraising campaign, though there will also be a fundraising component in the coming months. “We were looking for ways to engage a younger demographic and raise awareness of women’s health especially for younger women,” said Women’s College Hospital Foundation spokesperson Arlene Madell. “The reason we approached Avril is she’s young, she’s globally wellknown just like our leading research facility is, and she’s

Canadian.” The soundproof booth is affixed on a truck with Lavigne’s picture and Women’s College Hospital signage on it. It has already made a few stops, including one at the Molson Amphitheatre when Lavigne played there on Labour Day weekend and a more recent stop at the Eaton Centre. “We’ve got over 1,500 (participants) so far and we really want to make this one of the biggest choruses ever recorded,” Madell said. It is slated to make a few more stops throughout the GTA, including visits to Woodbine Beach, Yorkdale Shopping Centre and the Toronto Zoo. The recorded voices will be added to a remix of ‘Keep Holding On’ with the remixed track due to be released on iTunes this fall. “The booth is soundproof and all the voices are mixed together, so we’re hoping even people who think ‘oh, I can’t sing’ won’t feel shy,” Madell said. “Hopefully, the song’s a hit and people will be able to hear it and say ‘I was part of that.’” Funds from iTunes sales

will go toward supporting Women’s College Hospital research and the ongoing construction of the hospital’s new site. The youthful initiative coincides with the redevelopment of the hospital site – it moved into its new digs this April – and serves as a way to reach out to younger women. “We want to show this is not your grandmother’s hospital, or your mother’s hospital,” Madell said. Lavigne’s involvement comes through her own foundation, which aims to support children and youth living with serious illnesses or disabilities. “I am excited to have my fans’ voices together with mine in support of Women’s College Hospital,” she said. The soundproof booth will make appearances at Woodbine Beach from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21; Yorkdale Shopping Centre from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22; and Toronto Zoo from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28.

Oundjian enjoys playing tennis and watching hockey – he counts himself a fan of the Maple Leafs, though his nephew, Ben Smith, plays for the Chicago Blackhawks. He is also a fan of sporty cars with his current favourite his 1963 Triumph TR4. “It’s very tiny, almost like a little toy,” he said. “For me, it’s not about the speed or the flash, it’s about the sculpture and somewhat about the sound.” He loves the Annex area he calls home. “I’m a 30-second walk from Yorkville, but when I walk down my street, it’s like I’m in a small village,” he said. Oundjian’s 10th season with the TSO began with Elgar cello concertos on Wednesday, Sept. 18 and Thursday, Sept. 19. 15K Challenge looking for good ideas T h e Wo m e n’s C o l l e g e Hospital Research Institute (WCHRI) is looking to reward those who come up with feasible and beneficial projects or research ideas to benefit women and girls across Ontario. On Monday the WCHRI launched the $15K Challenge, an initiative that will provide funding of $15,000 or more to people or organizations who come up with ideas that address issues related to women’s health. Eligible projects should meet unmet needs in a community with a specific focus on women’s health. They must also have strong community ties and seek out community involvement. The challenge falls under the umbrella of Women’s Xchange research project, which was also launched Monday and will aim to support and spread word of research findings across Ontario.

Prepare to deal with busy traffic

W

ith summer vacations over, students back in school and the establishment of new routines at home, September means busier times for most of us. And with the increased traffic volume on our roads that comes with the fall season, there comes a greater need for vigilance and proper planning for all of us making our way around the city. We know Toronto has traffic congestion challenges. The longest commuting times in the country are in the Toronto Census Metropolitan Area, according to a StatsCan report released in late June. Traffic congestion has been identified as a major economic impediment by the Toronto Region Board of Trade, costing billions to the greater Toronto economy. The need for a sustained commitment from all levels of government to funding transit infrastructure is acute. And the discussion about our view what’s happening on our roadin Toronto is not confined Drivers must ways to congestion. There’s safety, too. pack patience, A pair of recent schoolchildren pedestrian deaths, including plan ahead the tragic losses of a 14-year-old North York girl and a five-yearold girl in Scarborough, spurred the Toronto District School Board last week to request chair Chris Bolton to enter into discussions with the city, police and other school boards to talk traffic safety. Trustees have directed that those representatives look at ways to reduce traffic risks to students (an increased use of crossing guards is already one suggestion). That means there’s a lot happening on our roads. So for motorists, trip planning is important. Leave yourself plenty of time to get to your destination. Remember, beyond traffic congestion caused by any ongoing roadwork, there are some new capital projects underway in the city as well that will impact travel times. For example, a second tunnel borer machine is about to start digging below Eglinton Avenue West as part of the Eglinton Crosstown light rail project – a project that, once completed, should play a part in alleviating congestion. But while the tunneling lasts, one should expect traffic delays. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with construction projects and road closures. The city has an updated web page detailing road closures and their durations. Check it out at http://bit.ly/1goY61f In the meantime, if you’re heading out on the roads, be alert, practice patience, and plan ahead.

Mayor Ford’s love of campaigning evident Mayor Rob Ford has made a name for himself as a great lover of football, sometimes to the point of distraction. But there is another game that excites nearly as much passion from our mayor and distracts him from his day-to-day duties almost as thoroughly. That would be campaigning. On Monday, Ford found the hustings so distracting he could barely pay attention to questions in a press scrum, held outside his office and just a few feet away from the spot where his staff had set up a television screen continuously looping a video of highlights of the summer of 2013. The mayor finally stopped, transfixed at the slow-motion video of himself getting ready to arm-wrestle wrestlerturned-politician Hulk Hogan at the start of a local comic convention. When asked whether he was in fact campaigning now, with his video and another Ford

david nickle the city Fest in the offing later this week, the mayor was clear: “I’ve never stopped campaigning... If you do, you lose at the polls.” In the strictly practical sense of the word, the mayor was correct: an elected official is being judged from the moment he or she takes office. However, there are strict rules about spending and receiving donations for electoral campaigns outside the campaign period. And the video, produced by a local production/editing company and scored by one of the mayor’s vocally talented staff-members, sure looks like a bit of both. But Ford doesn’t care about these things, and by the evidence, the powers-that-be don’t either. Toronto’s Compliance Audit Committee let the mayor off the hook over a boatload

of questions arising from the way he and his brother conducted the 2010 mayoralty campaign when they were brought forward early in the term. The mayor survived that, just as he survived a conflict of interest ruling that threatened to remove him from office. And as things stand right now, campaigning hard and pushing the rules might be worth the risk. Because as much as the video playing in the office window struggles to maintain a happy narrative, the other narrative – the one surrounding the actual business of governing – is less cheerful. The mayor could well see his subway plans dashed as the realities of financing the Scarborough RT replacement with a subway dash against the October council meeting. The questions surrounding videos and allegations of drug use continue to swirl and those other videos – of Ford at the Taste of the Danforth – give a different sense of the

Summer of Ford. Indeed, the scrum happened just as he left the city’s parks and environment committee, a committee he belongs to ex-officio, but never routinely attends. This time, as a week ago, the mayor came with the express purpose of blocking an attempt to circumvent his budget process, by adding projects and programs back into the budget before he had even had the chance to set a framework. Ford had to block the matter there, because really, he would have no hope of stopping a budgetary coup at council, a body over which he has long ago lost control. Much better to concentrate on arm-wrestling photo ops, picnics in parks and fishing trips. They might not get him reelected, but they certainly seem to be keeping our mayor entertained.

Protest aims to stamp out elephant poaching trade Local resident organizes Toronto leg of International march JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com A group of dedicated Toronto volunteers are organizing a protest march through the downtown core to help spread the word about the illegal elephant poaching trade and put pressure on the Canadian government to take action to stop it. With some 36,000 elephants being slaughtered each year for their ivory, some experts believe the African elephant may go extinct as a species in as little as a decade. The Toronto participants in the International March for Elephants will join those in dozens of other cities around the world, including 14 others affiliated – as the Toronto group is – with Kenyan conservation organization the David Sheldrake Wildlife Trust. One of the Toronto event organizers, North Toronto

area resident Linda Bronfman, said she was stunned to hear just how dire the situation is. “I was originally writing a book about elephants for kids and I found out about the plight of the elephants at the Toronto Zoo,” she said. “I had no idea, and frankly so many people don’t know, the horrific fact that in 10 to 12 years, there may not be any more free-roaming African elephants in the world.” The march through downtown Toronto will serve a dual purpose. First and foremost, the organizers hope to inform people about the harm being done by the ivory trade. Second, they hope to spur people to get in touch with the government through prewritten postcards to urge the Harper government to take a stand. “We don’t want Canada to be a bystander in this,”

Bronfman said. “We want people to ask the Canadian government to play a strong role on the international playing field.” Bronfman noted several African states have come up with a joint plan that would create stronger protection for elephants. “The plan costs $100 million, but that’s not a lot of money to save this species,” she said. “Just for comparison, Calvin Klein is finishing up (building) a second home that costs $75 million.” Fellow march organizer Tita Zierer did not know how close the African elephant was to extinction despite her long-standing involvement with animal protection. “It’s scary that we could lose another species,” she said. “To me, the number one goal is to get people out to the march and draw attention to

Selected recipients can receive funds throughout their education, but just as importantly, they all visit and keep in touch. “I wanted to find a way to help children, but I didn’t want to just give money,” Creaghan said. “Money obviously helps (with the costs of post-sec-

ondary education), but what they really need is support.” She noted Thanksgiving dinners at her home are now very lively affairs, with her own grown children and Grammie Project winners all coming together to share good food and good company. “I invite them to all our family dinners and big events,” she said. “We’ve all learned from each other and

all essentially become like additions to Creaghan’s own family, sharing their setbacks and successes. “They all want to keep in touch, so it’s been really amazing for all of us,” she said. The recipients are all eligible to receive as much as $5,000, with the Children’s Aid Foundation suggesting possible recipients. Creaghan noted she is

Zero Gun Violence Movement to take part in Manifesto festival events MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com For members of the Zero Gun Violence Movement, a summer spent bringing their message to schools and community events across Toronto has been an eye-opener. “We’re closer – but we’re far, also,” Louis March of the African Canadian Heritage Association said. Volunteers from ACHA and other groups were part of a 90-day campaign visiting city neighbourhoods including Alexandra Park to talk about violence. The first half of the summer looked a little more peaceful than in past years, said March, noting the homicide rate in Toronto was down by double digits compared to 2012. Then came a string of deadly shootings around Jane and Finch. At summer camps and community organizations, movement volunteers asked young people what a society

would look like in which we are “truly committed” to zero gun violence and there’s no need to pick up a gun. “They had difficulty coming up with that picture,” March conceded.“They don’t know what a gun-free society looks like.” He hopes the conversation continues at the summer campaign’s closing event, the seventh annual Manifesto festival of community and culture this Saturday at the George Brown College Waterfront Campus on Dockside Drive. T h e m ov e m e n t w i l l take part in the Painting A Different Picture panel discussion at Manifesto, as well as a concert, Manifesto Live, on the following day at YongeDundas Square. People working to reduce Toronto gun violence to zero are “close” in that they know what needs to be done, March said, which includes breaking down the “silos” of different groups competing against

each other for funds, often for similar community programs. People providing programs need to assess what’s working and work better together, said March, who is concerned about the young people he said remain on the outside, looking in. “The people that need the help sometimes don’t go for it,” he said, arguing it’s important to find out why so they can be reached too. “Ever y time there’s a bullet fired, there’s a story. Are we ready to listen to that story?” Part of the campaign was a recognition and celebration of what’s working, said March. The movement, with its number of supporting partner groups rising from 15 to 40, will continue its work after the campaign ends, he said.

n what will go down as a first in Toronto, men will be invited to participate in a Take Back the Night march. The march is an annual event designed as a means of speaking out against violence against women and transgender people. Hosted by the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre/Multicultural Women Against Rape (TRCC/ MWAR), this year’s march will take place in Regent Park. Its theme is Honouring and Reclaiming Self-Determination of Indigenous Peoples. Deb Singh of TRCC/MWAR said the decision to open the march to men came about as a result of the theme and the march’s partners. “For many years...men were the only gender not invited to the march,” she said. “This year, when we were planning it, the indigenous community told us we can’t end violence against women without talking to men and bringing them into the conversation.” Transgender men and women have been allowed to take part in Take Back the Night marches, and Singh acknowledged some were skeptical of their involvement as well. “For my own thinking, it’s been good to decolonize gender,” she said. “Some people might have a hard time including the men in the march, but the key was

in the indigenous community. They were very clear on the committee that they wanted to include men.” Take Back the Night has traditionally offered women a safe space where they could come together in solidarity. Singh hopes adding men to the march will not make anyone uncomfortable. “Of course some people want a quote-unquote ‘all-woman’ space, but what I think we all really want is a safe space and that can include women, trans people, youth, 2-spirited people and men,” she said. Men allowed Singh added the decision to allow men to participate in the march does not necessarily signify a permanent shift in the organizers’ thinking. “For 32 years, we’ve had an all-woman space and next year, we might have that again,” she said. While Take Back the Night has always been well-attended, organizers and participants alike would love to see the day

when such an event is not necessary. “Obviously, we wish we didn’t need it anymore, but women, children and trans people still feel fear walking the streets at night,” Singh said. “Obviously, experiences of sexual violence, rape, sexual assault and childhood sexual assault still take place today.” This year’s theme comes with sobering statistics. Singh said indigenous women are at the highest risk for sexual assault, due in large part to the marginalization of the Aboriginal community. “Indigenous women are five times more likely to be assaulted,” Singh said. “They’re exposed to more racism, more sexism, more joblessness and more poverty.” As always, the march will be preceded by a community fair with information booths, a community dinner and a rally. In keeping with the Take Back the Night theme, this year’s dinner will feature indigenous cuisine. This year’s Take Back the Night event will take place starting at Central Neighbourhood House, 349 Ontario St., on Saturday, with a community fair from 4 to 6 p.m., a community dinner at 5 p.m., a rally starting at 6 p.m. and the march running from 8 to 9:30 p.m.

Welcome to the 11th annual Queen West Art Crawl!

What To Expect At The Queen West Art Crawl This Year:

After 10 years, the Queen West Art Crawl (QWAC) is now a significant part of the Toronto events scene. QWAC has been counted as one of “50 things to do this summer” by Blogto.com and one of Toronto’s “best art events” by the Toronto Star. This year we are thrilled to welcome presenting sponsor BMO Financial Group. Their tremendous support of QWAC and the Toronto arts community is much needed and much appreciated. They are truly having an impact and are helping to build the success of this event—and the community—now and into the future. To keep this programming free, we rely on the generous support of sponsors and the Queen West community. If you see a QWAC donation can, please consider making a donation. Donations support our educational programming and marketing efforts to help promote local artists. You can also donate via Canada Helps or send a cheque to the QWAC office. Donations are eligible for a charitable tax receipt. On behalf of the QWAC team, the board of directors, our generous sponsors, our amazing volunteers and everyone involved in bringing you the Queen West Art Crawl, thanks for visiting and for supporting the Toronto arts community. we in Ontario treasure our diversity,” said the North York Liberal MPP, who represents the riding of York Centre. The charter proposed by the Parti Quebecois would ban public employees, including police, doctors, nurses, bureaucrats and

teachers, from wearing religious symbols at work to reinforce the state’s religious neutrality. That would include outlawing turbans, hijabs, kippas and crucifixes. Kwinter said Ontarians embrace diversity, noting landed immigrants and new-

comers contribute positively to the Ontario’s economy and way of life. principle “It’s a statement of principle for us,” said Kwinter, who expects the NDP and the Progressive Conservatives

to support the motion. “Once you get outside of Canada, we just don’t want what’s happening in Quebec deemed as what’s happening across Canada.” Kwinter will speak on the motion, which will be debated and voted upon on today.

Memorial plaque and oak tree latest memorial to Jack Layton DANIELA PITEO ccm@insidetoronto.com Former NDP leader Jack Layton was celebrated over the weekend when people gathered for a plaque unveiling at Withrow Park. Last Saturday, the TorontoDanforth NDP Riding Association unveiled a plaque next to an oak tree planted in memory of Layton. Elected officials, including MP Craig Scott, MPP Peter Tabuns and councillors Paula Fletcher and Mary Fragedakis, along with Layton’s widow, Olivia Chow, were all present for the unveiling. Chow said she was honoured to attend the afternoon ceremony where she spoke to a crowd of supporters. “An oak tree is strong, it’s sturdy and I heard it changes colour from green to orange,” Chow said. “An oak tree is such a perfect memorial – with deep roots and spreading branches – and with acorns that mean future growth.

An oak tree is such a perfect memorial – with deep roots and spreading branches – and with acorns that mean future growth. – Olivia Chow

“I know that many (people) were inspired by Jack’s message of hope and optimism and love. I certainly feel the love here today.” Chow, who said she misses her late husband’s charismatic smile most, said Layton was particularly fond of the Logan Street park. “Jack loved this park because it is such a wonderful meeting place for the community,” said Chow. “He loved cycling through here and coming to barbecue here.” Scott (Toronto-Danforth) also spoke about the similarities a strong oak and Layton share. “Jack was a team builder and he left behind a team, so

he lives on,” Scott said. “He had very deep roots in this community, but a young tree with newly planted roots is a tree that represents the continuation of Jack’s legacy as it grows, the community will continue to grow and he will be a part of it.” While Layton’s memory is held in high esteem amongst his colleagues, it is equally re g a rd e d by t h e m a n y Torontonians he served. “I came out in memory of Jack Layton, who was our city councillor when we moved into the neighborhood and from there our federal representative and of course, the leader of the (NDP),” said Ron McKay. “I came to celebrate the memory of all the things he stood for, that I also hold dear myself, the values of inclusiveness and community, so I just wanted to come down and honour him.” Area resident Paul Gauthier met Layton three decades ago and later joined his campaign.

People take photos at the unveiling of a memorial plaque and oak tree in memory of the late Jack Layton, at Withrow Park Saturday.

“I met Jack around 1986. I was one of the organizers from a bowl-a-thon and we had mailed all the city councillors and MPPs. Jack showed up to bowl and support us,” said Gauthier.

“We both had the same oncologist when I was working for his campaign. I had to go back for treatment and the first thing I knew was I got a get-well card from Jack and Olivia. It brought tears

to my eyes. “He’s just a fantastic person and I want to keep his memory alive.”

Second tunnel borer to start work

A second tunnel borer machine, which is part of the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit (LRT) project, is about to start drilling below Eglinton Avenue West. Measuring 80 metres long, the machine, nicknamed Lea, will begin tunnelling east from Black Creek Drive this week. Like Dennis before it, Lea will dig about 75 metres per week and is expected to get to Eglinton West subway station by spring. Both machines will then be redeployed for additional tunnelling east to Yonge Street. Metrolinx spokesperson Jamie Robinson said residents living along Eglinton Avenue West should continue to expect road and lane closures while the tunneling lasts. seeks more bike lanes wLetter

Metrolinx kicks off study for a downtown relief subway line RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Metrolinx will undertake its own study on a potential downtown relief subway line intended to ease congestion on existing routes. Leslie Woo from the regional transit planning agency outlined the parameters of the study intended to address how the planned line could relieve overcrowding on the city’s overburdened subway network, particularly along Yonge-UniversitySpadina, which is projected to be at maximum operational capacity by 2031. “If we don’t address this issue, the congestion has the capacity to negatively effect the customer experience, as well as ridership growth throughout the region,” said Woo during a presentation to Metrolinx’s board of directors last week. Woo, Metrolinx’s vice presi-

planned for this fall, with its findings to be presented to the board in the spring. Even though a relief subway line, also known as a downtown relief line, would be part of the existing TTC network, Woo said it was important to determine how it could be employed to address congestion for GO, which operates a regional service out of Union Station. “We also need to understand what (a relief line) could do for Union Station and GO Transit’s service capacity, and what the time line would be for introducing these improvements,” she said. Metrolinx has already listed a future relief subway line as a priority for construction within 15 years, with the costs coming from revenues raised by dedicated transit taxes.

Metrolinx is already collaborating with the TTC, the city’s planning department and York Region on similar relief line studies. The TTC has already released three possible alignments and costing scenarios for a relief subway line. As part of the strategy, a preliminary public consultation is

This week, Ford cast the deciding vote against motions to provide funding for the Riverdale Farm and High Park Zoo, speed up tree pruning and turf maintenance by city workers and refurbish aging playgrounds. Ford said he came to the committee meeting to stop “lefties” from putting unaffordable service enhancements into the budget, in advance of the 2014 budget being introduced at budget committee. “We can’t have these lefties spending like drunken sailors,” said Ford outside his office. “They’re reckless.
