Living in downtown Toronto offers plenty of convenience, but few opportunities for residents to enjoy greenery. Members of the Harbord Village Residents Association are looking to change that with an eye to greening their neighbourhood anywhere and everywhere they can. Volunteers are patrolling Croft Street near Bathurst and Harbord streets, checking for places where they can add even a splash of plant life to the laneway. The laneway project is part of a pilot project designed to make the park-free community a greener, healthier place, with plans to roll the initiative out to the rest of the Harbord Village area in the future. The residents’ association chose Croft as the site of its pilot project after someone living on the street pushed to find planting opportunities there. “That laneway is a fairly hostile place,” said Tim Grant of the Harbord Village Residents’ Association. “It’s a paved laneway with a fair number of laneway houses that come right up to the pavement.” >>>CREATING, page 12

PortsToronto last Thursday officially opened a new tunnel to the airport, which travels from the foot of Bathurst Street directly to the island airport.
