Living in downtown Toronto offers plenty of convenience, but few opportunities for residents to enjoy greenery. Members of the Harbord Village Residents Association are looking to change that with an eye to greening their neighbourhood anywhere and everywhere they can. Volunteers are patrolling Croft Street near Bathurst and Harbord streets, checking for places where they can add even a splash of plant life to the laneway. The laneway project is part of a pilot project designed to make the park-free community a greener, healthier place, with plans to roll the initiative out to the rest of the Harbord Village area in the future. The residents’ association chose Croft as the site of its pilot project after someone living on the street pushed to find planting opportunities there. “That laneway is a fairly hostile place,” said Tim Grant of the Harbord Village Residents’ Association. “It’s a paved laneway with a fair number of laneway houses that come right up to the pavement.” >>>CREATING, page 12

Dancer choreographs her own duet at festival JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com For as long as she can remember, downtown Toronto resident Alysa Pires has had dancing in her soul. The Ryerson University grad’s love of movement was evident from the time she went on a vacation to Disneyland with her family when she was a young child. “I was too small to go on a lot of the rides, so while I was waiting when my brother was on the rides, my parents said I would just dance along to the music that was playing in the park,” she said. “My parents put me in dance when I was two-and-ahalf or three years old because I was dancing all the time. Once they put me in it, I just never stopped.” By the time she was about 10 years old, she said, her parents noticed that her talent matched her passion. In her early teens, she was enrolled in Vancouver’s Dancestreams Youth Dance Company, a preprofessional program that helped set her on the road to a career as a dancer and choreographer. Though she only graduated from Ryerson in 2012 – she earned a BFA in dance – she

has become an in-demand choreographer. That is a rare career move in the field of dance, but one she is happy to have had the opportunity to pursue. “Choreography’s typically sort of a second phase in a lot of people’s careers,” she said. “Normally people start off with dance and move into choreo later, but that’s not how it worked for me.” Her work includes choreography for the world premieres of Judith Thompson’s acclaimed Elektra in Bosnia and Timberlake Wertenbaker’s Ajax in Afghanistan, which toured Greece as part of the Women and War Project. Pires has also choreographed productions of beloved works such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Fiddler on the Roof, The Rocky Horror Show, The Wizard of Oz and Beauty and the Beast, among others. “It was strange, but when I finished school, my gigs were mostly choreographic work,” she said. “I still train and seek out work as a dancer, but I’ve had more success with choreography.” Of course, being a trained dancer and a skilled choreographer gives her a chance to create pieces for herself in

the ultra-competitive world of dance. She will perform one of her pieces in the upcoming dance: made in Canada festival at the Betty Oliphant Theatre. “It’ll be my first time performing on stage in Toronto in about two years, so it’s a bit nerve-wracking,” she admitted. Most of Pires’ work has come out-of-province or overseas. In 2013, she was the only North American and only woman to earn a spot in the prestigious DanceEast ChoreoLab in Ispwich, UK. “There are so many talented people doing interesting work and there’s just not enough funding to go around,” she said. “In Europe, there’s more funding and also more institutions that have residencies, and professional development opportunities.” Her piece for dance: made in Canada was born during her time in Ipswich. She and her fellow ChoreoLab participants were tasked with creating a piece based on the life and works of specific subjects and she chose to focus on noted author Sylvia Plath. In creating the piece, she researched Plath – who is perhaps known as much for her grisly suicide as for her

Normally people start off with dance and move into choreo later, but that’s not how it worked for me. – Alysa Pires

literary work – and was surprised at how demure Plath seemed. “I assumed she looked kind of like a cracked-out Joni Mitchell, but I saw a picture of her and she looked more like a cookie-cutter, perfect 1950s housewife,” Pires said. Pires’ piece is a duet, which she will dance with male dancer Mateo Galiardo Torres. “My piece looks at the juxtaposition between the expectations on someone like that (who fits the housewife image) and their wants,” Pires said. “Mateo and I are very similar in some ways, so in a broad sense, (the piece) is kind of about gender roles.” dance: made in Canada will run from Thursday, Aug. 13, through Sunday, Aug. 16, at the Betty Oliphant Theatre, 404 Jarvis St. For tickets or information, including a full schedule, visit www.princessproductions.ca or call 416-533-8577.

Innovative program awards points for living healthier JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Studies have shown that Canadians are among the most active users of rewards programs, earning points for spending on everything from flights to movies to gas purchases. A new program, launched last Wednesday will give them a chance to earn rewards for living healthier. The Carrot Rewards program, developed by Social Change Rewards in tandem with the Government of Canada, Government of British Columbia, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association and YMCA Canada, will nudge users to take steps that will help them maintain a healthy weight and take other steps

toward combating chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. “Nudges work a lot better than (encouraging people to take) significant steps,” said Social Change Rewards founder and CEO Andreas Souvaliotis at a launch event at the Toronto Central Grosvenor Street YMCA Centre last week. Rather than pushing fullscale lifestyle changes, which can often seem unattainable or punitive, the app will give points for everything to being a bit more active to taking quizzes regarding healthy living. “This program will allow us to address a very important and urgent need,” said Heart and Stroke Foundation CEO David Sculthorpe, pointing out that Carrot Rewards is

ing with other points reward providers, using $15 million raised from governments, non-governmental organizations and the private sector to purchase points. Keenly interested

expected to have a huge impact “whether it’s by informing Canadians of the dangers of free sugars or get-

ting people to eat more fruits and vegetables or just educating people on risk factors.” Carrot Rewards is partner-

While Souvaliotis said it was too early to reveal which points programs Carrot Rewards will partner with, he said some of the leading programs are keenly interested. That means participants should have plenty of options as to how they spend the points they collect. With the first two million participants set to earn points just for signing up, with additional points available for referring friends, it will also serve as a valuable education tool for health organi-

zations. “Those two million people will be the largest control group in the world,” Souvaliotis said. “We’ll be able to use the data from their use to figure out the best way to – for instance – speak to people about eating healthy instead of going for a Big Mac.” Canadian Diabetes Association President and CEO Rick Blickstead said the app’s many quizzes and attainable goals will provide a strong incentive for people to make small changes and will help to educate people on risk factors and unhealthy choices. Carrot Rewards is slated to launch this fall. For more information on the program, visit www.socialchangerewards.com/carrotrewards

Time for the Parapan Am Games to shine W

hile we’re still basking in the glow of the success of the recent Pan Am Games in Toronto, it’s important not to forget that an equally prestigious athletic event opens tomorrow. The Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games run from Aug. 7 to 15, and residents can do their part to make these Games just as successful as the Pan Ams. The Parapans officially open Friday with ceremonies at York University’s CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium starting at 5:45 p.m. The Parapan Am Games in Toronto will feature more than 1,600 athletes from 28 countries competing in 15 sports. As was the case with the Pan Am Games, competition will take place at a our view number of Toronto venues. There’s track and field at York Celebrate University, swimming, sitting and wheelchair tennis our athletes volleyball at the University of Toronto Aug. 7 to 15 Scarborough, and wheelchair basketball at the Mattamy Centre downtown. There’s archery at Varsity Stadium, and the cycling road races at Ontario Place. Markham, Mississauga, Milton and Whitby are also hosting events for those hoping to catch Parapan action beyond Toronto’s borders. As always, these Games serve as a qualifier for the Paralympics. That’s especially important for a number of top Canadian athletes and teams including the men’s wheelchair basketball team. Our men’s teams are three-time gold medal winners at the Paralympics (including gold at the London 2012 Games) and they are looking to continue their golden ways come the Rio 2016 Paralympics. Their first step on that road comes at the Toronto Parapan Am Games. The Canadian women’s wheelchair basketball team also has an impressive resume, having won Paralympic gold medals in 1992, 1996 and 2000. The excitement for the Parapan Am Games begins this week with the arrival of the torch relay, which will be in Toronto today with stops at Corus Quay, Inukshuk Park, Queens Quay and Yonge Street, and David Pecaut Square for a community celebration at 12:30 p.m. that will feature a guest appearance by Rick Hansen. Tomorrow, the torch relay visits Variety Village in Scarborough, Queen’s Park, and the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto on Spadina Road in advance of the opening ceremonies.

Straight talk about the dog days of summer

M

y message box got a serious workout over the long weekend. It was standing and screaming room only in there. Everybody was whining up a storm. But it wasn’t about the hot weather. It was about the phrase du jour referring to it. Q. Jamie, I always hate the beginning of August. The only expression we ever hear is the ‘dog days of summer’. We’re bombarded with it. The dog days of summer, the dog days of summer, the dog days of summer. Enough already. This has been going on for donkey’s years. No other creatures get even a mention until they’re over. It makes me angry as a bear, I tell ya. When are we finally going to get equal time in the summer for the rest of the animal kingdom? – Gord the Gorilla A. In the next few minutes, Gordo. I don’t

jamie wayne guest column want to let the cat out of the bag, but a little bird told me that by the end of the column all will be forgotten and you’ll be happy as a clam. Q. Do you really mean it, Jamie? I’ve had ants in my pants over this since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. – Karina the Kangaroo A. Cross my heart. This comes straight from the horse’s mouth. Q. Wait a minute. I thought you just got through saying it was a bird that gave you the news. This all sounds rather fishy if you ask me. – Arnold the Armadillo A. Don’t get your feathers in a bunch. The horse called first. The bird tweeted right after. OK? Q. Jamie, do you mind if I talk turkey for a second?

– Penelope the Peacock A. Would you be a lamb and try back around Thanksgiving? I promised to resolve this dog days of summer controversy before the end of the column. If I don’t do it, I have a hunch I’ll be hearing about it until the cows come home. Q. You’ll be hearing about it long after they arrive, too. No other animals can get on the map this time of year. It’s the nature of the beast, I’m afraid. Don’t you think it’s time to accept that you’re barking up the wrong tree? – Zoe the Zebra. A. On the contrary, I was about to pull a rabbit out of a hat here. Anything is possible. All you have to do is believe. Q. Yeah and pigs might fly, too. Sorry, but I’m with Zoe on this. – Wally the Walrus A. Boo hoo. I’m crying crocodile tears. I hate to break it to the two of you,

but it’s all just water off this duck’s back. I guarantee you’ll both be eating crow. But it’s not up to me. I’ll leave the deciding vote to the final questioner of the day. Q. I believe. I believe. I believe. Now, with that out of the way, let’s get to the most important part of this discussion. After I’m done eating, any chance of going back for seconds? As far as I’m concerned one can never get enough crow and you can see by my attached selfie that I’m a growing boy. – Harvey the Hippopotamus A. That I can, and thanks for tipping the scales in my favour. But as for the extra helping? Well, I wouldn’t count my chickens before they hatch if I were you. Foraging in city’s parks is illegal and could be dangerous to your health DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Picking a batch of mushrooms from one of Toronto’s parks could add an exotic accent to a steak dinner. Depending on the mushroom you pick, that dinner could also send you on a hallucinogenic spiral, throw you into a seizure, send your blood-pressure soaring, or worst-case scenario, put you on a short list for a liver transplant. And other supposedly-edibles that are found in the city’s ravines and forested areas aren’t much safer, according to Dr. Margaret Thompson, Medical Director at the Ontario Poison Centre. “We’ve had calls from patients who thought they were picking wild parsnips and ended up having seizures — patients who thought they were picking wild leeks who ended up with gastrointestinal problems,” said Thompson in an interview last Friday. According to Thompson, the Poison Centre hears from about 250 people who’ve

We’ve had calls from patients who thought they were picking wild parsnips and ended up having seizures ... – Dr. Margaret Thompson

had a bad experience with foraged mushrooms, and many more who have eaten something else that disagreed with them. It is all a matter of correctly identifying what you’re eating. The only trouble is, with Toronto’s diverse ecology, making that identification can require a microscope and a professional. “We just want everybody to be aware that not all mushrooms are safe and it’s only a micologist that might be able to determine the difference between a poisonous and non poisonous mushroom, by looking at it under a microscope — some of them are so close in physical properties you can never be too safe.”

Close play A Royal York Cardinals runner, left, is tagged out by Toronto Playgrounds’ first baseman during Toronto Baseball Association minor mosquito action at Christie Pits on Friday evening. Toronto Playgrounds went on to win the game 22-4.

Thompson is helping Toronto get the message across that city parks are no place for foragers. Taking plants and other objects out of a park is prohibited in city bylaws, and in addition to the risk to human health, doing so can disrupt often delicate ecosystems. Thompson said that many people who forage do so because of a family tradition, a desire for exoticism, or because they have come here from countries where foraging for delicacies is more common. “If you’re looking for mushrooms or truffles and if it looks like a mushroom that was back home and safe to eat, why not eat it in Canada, it’s probably the same thing,” she said. “The people we see are not the child who has a bit of a mushroom — it’s the one who purposefully goes out because it’s a delicacy.” Anyone with health concerns with eating mushrooms should call the Ontario Poison Centre at 416813-5900.

30 PEOPLE WITH HEARING LOSS Qualified Participants Needed for Technology Field Test

During this Limited-Time event, we are looking for people like you, who may be experiencing varying levels of hearing loss to evaluate a remarkable new line of digital hearing aids and a rehabilitative process that could be the solution to your difficulties. Call us toll-free today at one of the numbers below to see if you qualify for this Field Test. Potential candidates will be given a FREE hearing test to determine candidacy. Participants will be given a FREE in-office demonstration, and the opportunity to evaluate the latest, most advanced hearing aid technology for 30 days at drastically reduced rates. A refund* is available at the end of the test period if you feel your test aids do not improve your hearing. re t open-fit op A full range of sizes are available in this new technology, including the exceptionally disscreet and IIC models shown here:

Similar to choosing between contact lenses or glasses, you can decide with your hearing professional which hearing aid style would best suit you. Both styles have approximately the same performance and functions, but are fitted to the ear differently.

It’s almost a shame this technology isn’t more visible! Open-fit and Invisible-In-the-Canal (IIC) hearing aids are smaller and more beautiful than ever, striking the perfect balance between size and performance. The elegant and highly discreet open-fit hearing aid fits perfectly on top of your ear, and the thin tube in your ear canal is designed to disappear against your skin. The new IIC hearing aid--now with wireless technology--provides all of the outstanding features and benefits you want in a digital hearing aid, minus the stigma that came with wearing one in the past.

Tunnel also improves island infrastructure >>>from page 1 between PortsToronto, Forum Equity Partners and lead developers PCL construction, meaning that no taxpayer funds were used in its completion. It features four moving sidewalks to help bring passengers from the mainland to the island, with the total trip estimated to take six minutes from one side to the other. “Thanks to this new pedestrian tunnel, travellers can now enjoy a fast, convenient and reliable way to access the Billy Bishop Airport,” Tory said. “They no longer have to rely on taking a ferry as the only means of reaching the island airport to catch a flight

or to get to the city.” The mayor added the tunnel has proved to be a complex project ever since construction began in 2012. Beyond providing easier airport access for travellers, the city used the tunnel’s construction as an opportunity to improve infrastructure for those living on Toronto Island. “The City of Toronto was looking at how to bring much-needed sewer and water mains to Toronto Island,” he said. “Before this tunnel, if a water main broke or needed to be turned off on the Toronto Island, residents on the island were quite often literally without water.”

The new tunnel includes watermains from the mainland to ensure Toronto Island residents have water even if their own mains experience problems. That, he said, saved the time and disruption that would have been caused by linking the island to mainland water mains, and also saved about $10 million. Neither Tory nor Raitt would comment on whether the new link would have an impact on the possibility of jets using Billy Bishop Airport. Raitt said it would be up to the City of Toronto and PortsToronto to move to have the agreement amended to permit larger aircraft to use the airport.

Hurry! Contest closes August 9, 2015.

No purchase necessary. The Contest is open to residents of Toronto, Ontario 18 years of age or older. Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received. One (1) grand prize will be awarded. One (1) roundtrip charter seats for (2) two adults to Jamaica, courtesy of Transat Holidays, and seven (7)-night stay at Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall in Montego Bay, courtesy of Playa Resorts & Jamaica Tourist Board. Approximate retail value of prizes is $6,500+HST. Entrants must correctly answer, unaided, a mathematical skill testing question to be declared a winner. Contest closes August 9, 2015 at 11:59pm. Creating habitat for the ‘Three Bs’ >>>from page 1 Grant said there are a few garages and properties that are set back from the roadway, but even those tend to be paved over for the most part. “There are places where there’s maybe a foot of dirt that could be planted, but we’re looking at doing whatever we can to help bring some new life to the area. In some cases, that will mean putting flower pots out to grow small green plants. The work is being led by what Grant said is a residents’ association’s committee formed to help create more habitat for the “Three Bs”: birds, butterflies and bees.

Greening initiative The greening initiative comes as green space in the area is less available than ever before. The local high school, Central Tech, was once a popular destination for dog walkers and one of the few spaces that offered any

sort of greenery in the neighbourhood. A plan to replace the school’s decrepit field with turf and have a domed surface cover it for a portion of the year has put an end to that, however. ‘Isn’t much here’ “Like many downtown neighbourhoods, there isn’t much here for people who want to enjoy being outside,” Grant said. “This whole area has no parks, just two little parkettes, and we’ve lost – or will soon lose – access to Central Tech’s field.” As the plan moves to other parts of Harbord Village – something that is unlikely to happen until next year due

‘Look at their own areas’ “Everybody’s starting to look at their own areas,” Grant said. “We’re looking at all the margins – chain link fences or little patches here or there where people might not normally think to plant something.” With the infusion of more greenery, Harbord Village should become a healthier place for residents. “There have been a lot of studies showing that the presence of trees and plants makes people happier,” Grant said. Ultimate disc star leads Toronto Rush into playoffs norm nelson nnelson@insidetoronto.com When Isaiah Masek-Kelly runs on to the field with his Toronto Rush professional ultimate disc team this Saturday at the new 18,000seat Avaya Stadium in San Jose, he can thank the 40 hours of community service he carried out while attending Harbord Collegiate in downtown Toronto. The star player for the Toronto R u s h , w h o g re w u p i n t h e Dovercourt Road and Bloor Street area, recalled doing his volunteer work at Palmerston Avenue Junior Public School, which his sister was attending at the time. “They had an elementary team, and I had never played before. And so I would learn the game there while coaching them,” he said in a phone interview. He liked it so much he then helped to create the ultimate disc team at Harbord Collegiate. “There was a teacher who played, so he was interested in coaching, so I got him on board, and we created a team,” he said. He then pursued the sport at

and 50 assists. The team splits its games between Lamport Stadium and Varsity Centre which, he pointed out, “is right in my neighbourhood – a 10-minute bike ride.” The Toronto Rush have been a huge success story on the field, having only lost two games in their short history, going into this final weekend of their third season. CHAMPIONSHIP LOSS

Isaiah Masek-Kelly, right, leads the Toronto Rush into the American Ultimate Disc League final-four championships this weekend in San Jose. He helped start the program at Harbord Collegiate while a student there.

the club and national levels and finally went on to the ultimate level – starring with the Toronto Rush in the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL).

He is the team leader in goals, assists and blocks (defensive play resulting in a turnover), and is also one of only three players in AUDL history to record more than 50 goals

One of those losses was a regular league game against Montreal Royal earlier this season, marking their first regular season loss. Their other loss, however, was in last year’s AUDL championship game to the San Jose Spiders. In 2013, the Toronto Rush won the AUDL championship, capping off an undefeated season. This time around, the Toronto Rush will meet San Jose in the semifinal Saturday (with the other semifinal pitting the Raleigh Flyers against Madison Radical). All are their respective division playoff champs. The winners play the AUDL championship Sunday.

The Toronto Rush were put in Toronto by Rob Lloyd, recently retired co-president of Cisco Systems. Basically he did it because the franchise was available and his son Mark is a veteran star player in his own rite, although he’s out for the season and concentrating on his GM duties with the team. “We generally get about 800 to 1,000 fans, sometimes 1,200 depending on the weather,” said the elder Lloyd. As for why he picked the downtown venues, he said: “We’re in the heart of Toronto. People can walk to us, they can take the subway, they can ride a bike, you can watch the game from outside the fence if you don’t have $12 to get in. “Those two locations (Lamport Stadium and Varsity Centre) are really critical to how we appeal to our audience.” All three of championship weekend’s games will be live streamed for free and broadcast via ESPN3.
