Cabbagetown author Eric Murphy’s first book has earned plenty of accolades, but few are more meaningful than having it used to boost literacy at Regent Park schools. M u r p h y ’s n o v e l , T h e Phantom’s Gold, was chosen for Regent Park Reads, a pilot project undertaken at Nelson Mandela Park Public School and Lord Dufferin Public School. through a partnership with the Daniels Corporation and the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation. Murphy was thrilled to have had his debut novel selected for the program. ‘DIDN’T HURT’ “It didn’t hurt that I was a local author, I’m sure, but the people at Daniels read the book and really liked it,” he said. “I definitely didn’t target Regent Park and didn’t think anything like this would happen. If I could predict that, I’d be buying

lottery tickets and betting on the ponies.” The Phantom’s Gold follows the story of 13-year-old Will, who runs away from his Cabbagetown home to live with his grandparents in the Maritimes following the death of his father. Once there, he and his grandfather wind up racing a phantom sailboat in search of gold in a bid to save the family’s home and business. It deals with such universal themes as loss, bereavement and anger management. Murphy himself took part in the literacy initiative, which

saw Grade 7 students at Lord Dufferin do reading comprehension exercises and students from Grades 6 through 8 at Nelson Mandela Park enjoy writing workshops. He loved the experience, and exposing local students to the joys of reading and writing. “My philosophy is that it’s very hard to be the author of your own future if you can’t read or write,” he said. Writing came naturally to the actor and video producer. The Phantom’s Gold was originally written as a screenplay which >>>REGENT, page 8

The city must do everything possible to fight two proposed midtown buildings at the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB), said Eglinton-Lawrence Councillor Karen Stintz. For about two years, the city and residents’ associations tried to work out a settlement with the developers, who are working together hoping to build two residential buildings at Yonge Street and Helendale Avenue. However, the developers, who could not be reached for comment, have appealed to the OMB because they accuse council of failing to make a decision in a timely manner as set out in the Planning Act. Now, it’s time for the city to fight back, Stintz said. The city needs to “go to the OMB with everything we have in our arsenal to fight this application. Because, once again, we came to the table with a view that we would find a compromise and we were willing,” Stintz said at the May 13 meeting of North York community council. “We never fought the developer every step of the way. In fact, we gave them every single opportunity to come with something that might make sense but >>>HIGH, pg. 13

A cappella band Eh440 hits right note on Dragon’s Den Toronto-based band held CD release party May 27 JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com There are a few ways to make a name for yourself in the music industry, but the members of Toronto-based a cappella group Eh440 certainly took the road less travelled. The five-person band, which officially released its debut album this week, pitched themselves on the hit TV show Dragon’s Den and actually received offers from three of the dragons, settling on one put forth jointly by Arlene Dickinson and David Chilton. That appearance was just one more step on the road to success. “It was really nerve-wracking,” said singer and Forest Hill resident Stacey Kay. “We’re used to performing but for this, we had to actually pitch ourselves as a product.” The band had already

made a name for itself outside of the small screen, with its five members each bringing something different and unique to the table. Kay started out singing country before studying musical theatre. Now, her strengths lie in pop, top 40 and rap. Other members include folk-roots singer Mike Celia, beatboxer Mike Stapleton and a cappella veterans Janet Turner and Joe Oliva, formerly of a cappella mainstays The Essentials. “When I think of a cappella groups, I picture four guys in ties singing doo wop songs, but we have a fresh sound,” Kay said. The Forest Hill resident was introduced to the band by Turner, with whom she had a friendly – if contentious – history. “We used to compete against each other in singing

Eh440 – Mike Celia, left, Stacey Kay, Joe Oliva, Janet Turner, and Luke Stapleton – launched its new album May 27 at the Drake.

competitions, but we always got along great,” Kay said. Eh440 has performed in countless venues, with the money from their successful Dragon’s Den pitch going toward funding international

showcase performances. Celia, who lives in Little Italy, said the band’s disparate styles mesh incredibly well together despite the fact that when they first got together, they had no idea what the end

product would sound like. “It was a bit of an experiment,” he said. “The idea was kind of throw five people in a room together who don’t belong together and see what happens.”

Just over a year after the band formed, the experiment has proved successful. Eh440 won a Galaxie Rising Star Award and is embarking on a tour to promote a full-length record notable for its disparate styles and influences. “Joe and Luke, our rhythm section, are what holds the sound together,” Celia said. “The amazing thing when you listen to the record is that every sound on it came from our mouths.” The band’s debut album, Turn Me Up, even features a cameo by acclaimed singer Serena Ryder, whose keyboardist produced the work. “That came as a surprise,” Celia said. “She had heard our music and our manager said she really wanted to be on it, which is amazing for us.” The band hosted a concert and CD release party at the Drake Underground on Tuesday.

Excitement over World Cup builds

T

he World Cup soccer championship officially kicks off June 12 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with a game between the host country and Croatia, but the excitement in Toronto is already starting to build. Short of being in Brazil, Toronto has to be the best place in the world for soccer fans to watch the World Cup. Most residents are already very familiar with how our city gets all dressed up and celebrates World Cup. Beyond the flags waving from cars, there are vendors selling hats, shirts and flags, and fans gathering in locations across Toronto to catch the action. Everybody will be talking soccer between June 12 and July 13, when the tourney wraps up with the championship game in Rio. There are 32 teams taking part in the World Cup and Toronto has significant our view demographic links to many of those teams. For instance, the Italian, Greek, Portuguese, German, English, French and Dutch diasporas are large and well established throughout the city. We’re all familiar with scenes of flag-waving fans filling the streets and celebrating after their teams win. Parts of Little Italy, Little Portugal, Corso Italia, and Greektown on the Danforth are seas of celebrating fans after wins by their teams. What’s especially interesting and makes the World Cup in our city so much fun is the mixing of fan bases, and how the Brazilian fans will watch and celebrate in Little Portugal, and parts of Corso Italia along St. Clair West have also become home-base for many fans with links to South American teams other than Brazil. North York has a strong centre of fans of African teams, and is also where Iranian fans gather. It’s all a part of what makes Toronto great. Here at The City Centre Mirror, we know how important the World Cup is to our city. That’s why we’ve got special coverage in today’s paper to introduce soccer fans to our website dedicated to the World Cup in Toronto. You can access the website by going to www. insidetoronto.com/worldcupTO There’s information there about all 32 teams, the culture and demographics related to those team’s countries in the Greater Toronto Area, and information on the best places to watch games locally.

Tory’s transit proposal compelling & speculative Oh, John Tory is a coy one. All this time when the mayoral candidate was talking about building a “Yonge Street Relief Line,” we assumed that he was simply renaming the Downtown Relief Line – and that his promise to start building the thing right away, at the same time as the city and province built a subway to Scarborough, was pie-inthe-sky. Well, it turns out the reason Tory didn’t call his secret transit plan the downtown relief line was he doesn’t intend to build the downtown relief subway line any time soon. His Yonge Street Relief line is something else: a 52-kilometre, 22-stop SmartTrack line, using GO Transit rail lines for an above-ground subway that will stretch from the western reaches of Etobicoke to the middle of Scarborough, and dip south to Union Station

david nickle the city touching Main Station in the east and Dundas West station in the west. It will cost $8 billion divided between three levels of government, and the city will pay for its portion using Tax Increment Financing (TIF), the same system of borrowing against future property assessment increases that Gordon Chong advocated when Mayor Rob Ford hired him to come up with a funding plan for his failed subway proposal on Sheppard Avenue. The idea itself is a refinement and expansion of a proposal that failed 2010 mayoral candidate Rocco Rossi proposed – to use GO lines as an interim downtown relief line. And it is a compelling idea. It provides rapid com-

muter transit to places that are pretty far off, and gives commuters from the edge of the subway system an alternative to clogging up the Bloor-Yonge interchange as they head to work downtown. It is also, in the context of this election, a too-cute game of rope-a-dope: an attempt to get his opponents to spend their energy attacking and questioning a suspected plan that is nothing like the real plan. For a short time after its revelation, it forces Tory’s opponents to basically call him on his semantics. It also, however, allows his opponents to accuse him of hiding a flip-flop behind semantics. Earlier in the campaign, Tory did make it clear that a downtown relief subway line was essential, and sharply criticized Chow and Ford for not embracing it as a number-one priority. And while it is true the

new plan sidesteps some of the logistical problems of getting a downtown relief subway going right away, it raises other problems. To begin with, the TIF model of financing is another semantic trick: it is debt by another name, and with the billion-dollar Scarborough subway plan, Toronto will have nearly reached its debt ceiling. And like Chow’s downtown relief plan, Tory’s surface rail plan relies on a massive federal and provincial buy-in to go ahead, and in that sense, is just as speculative. The plan also doesn’t obviate the need for the TTC’s downtown relief line – the city has to find the money for that too. And as Tory himself pointed out not too long ago, that needs to come sooner rather than later.

With the warm weather finally around the corner, many are making plans for their summer vacations. For family caregivers of the elderly, however, planning a trip can take on a more complicated perspective. Many caregivers who are responsible for the day-to-day care of a senior member of the family are often stressed about how the much-needed support of their loved one will continue while they’re away. Daily health and medical obligations that are required by many seniors can make it a challenge in planning time away from the home. Fortunately there are a number of options for caregivers who want to assure that their elderly loved one is well taken care of while the family is away. Known as “Respite Care,” the service provides temporary, special care in the home or a substitute living arrangement for seniors while their regular caregivers are unavailable. In many cases, this type of care provides a brief period of relief or rest (usually more than 24 hours) for the family members, guardians or others who provide care. Respite Care comes in many forms and there are a variety of options for caregivers who want to assure that their loved ones’ needs are addressed during these times. Following are details on the alternative caregiving solutions for seniors:

their own homes. During times where regular caregivers are unavailable, arrangements for short-term care from a Registered Nurse or Nurse Practitioner can be made, allowing clients to continue to receive assistance with medical needs as required. Similarly, Toronto Central CCAC can coordinate appointments for primary care providers to visit clients inhome, where appropriate, in order to continue the healthcare schedule that is required.

IN-HOME PERSONAL SUPPORT Seniors often need daily care with general activities such as food preparation, feeding, bathing, laundry and housecleaning. Respite care options coordinated through Toronto Central CCAC can include the services of a Personal Support Worker who is able to take over the activities that are usually provided by the primary caregiver. As well, services that provide meal

delivery and transportation to medical appointments are also available.

SHORT-STAY PROGRAMS In some instances, caregivers may be out of town for a while, requiring that their loved ones have alternative care arrangements made for them. During these times, seniors can be connected with a long-term care facility or retirement home that specializes in providing short-stay, respite care. Through these facilities, arrangements can be made for seniors requiring assistance with a short stay. The minimum time frame for this type of respite care is five days, with the maximum support offered up to 60 days at one time. Contact and coordination can be done through Toronto CCAC. Regent Park Reads program likely to continue in some form >>>from page 1 was optioned and developed but never produced. “I was set to give up, but I had a school principal friend who said ‘it’s a great story. You can’t let it die, you have to turn it into a novel,’” Murphy said, a longtime Cabbagetowner. He took writing workshops and classes at Humber to learn the nuances of novelwriting and brought his story through various drafts before it was published. “They say it takes 10 years to be an overnight success,” Murphy said. “I have to apologize for my tardy arrival.” The Phantom’s Gold is the first book in a series, with the second installment, The Dead Man’s Boot, currently in the works. While the in-class portion of Regent Park Reads has finished, participants will join Murphy on a schooner in Toronto Harbour in mid-

“There are a lot of great literacy initiatives in the city,” said Marianne Fedunkiw, the program coordinator for Regent Park Reads. “When we have a debrief once the whole program’s finished in the middle of June, we’ll see whether we should partner with some of those or whether it’s best to keep it local.” ‘Coolest thing’ Fedunkiw said having a local author working with students was a boon, particularly for young boys, who are less likely to read than young girls. “The coolest things for the kids is seeing a successful author who wrote a book they love who lives right in their neighbourhood,” she said.

‘High towers’ not acceptable: Stintz

Fun Fair: Sam Dean tries to get out of the cold water after being dunked at the Winchester Public School Fun Fair Saturday.

>>>from page 1 it didn’t happen, they did not. They chose another path. We’re at the OMB because of the developers’ choice.” “Now, we need to put our best foot forward to make sure this tower as it’s currently configured is not approved at the OMB because it will not add to the community. In fact, it will take away. It will create wind and it’s too high and it’s too dense, we don’t have the infrastructure to support it. It will not fit in the urban form, it will not add to the pedestrian experience on Yonge Street, it will shadow all the cafés on the east side of Yonge and it’s nothing but a bad development.” The first building at 2360 to 2378 Yonge St. at Helendale Avenue would be 28 storeys, including a six-storey base and a 22-storey tower, with 234 residential units and almost 2,700 square metres (29,000 square feet) of commercial space, according to a city planning report. The second building at 31

to 37 Helendale just to west of the first building would be a 24-storey apartment building, including a five-storey base and a 19-storey tower above, with 242 residential units, the report said. The developer is seeking to demolish 19 affordable and mid-range residential units on the site. Pre-hearing July 17 & 18 An OMB pre-hearing was held March 17. Another prehearing conference is scheduled for July 17 and 18 and a full hearing has been scheduled for Nov. 12 to 26. While the development site is north of Yonge and Eglinton and is a reasonable location for development, “high towers” are not acceptable, Stintz said, “We said to the applicant, ‘Listen, you know what, you’re right near the subway, the LRT is coming through, we want to be reasonable in terms of how this area gets re-developed’,” she said. But while something

Father’s Day Contest

“remarkable” and “elegant” could have been built on the site, the developers backed away from negotiations and appealed to the OMB, Stintz said. C. Ann King, chair of the community liaison committee for the neighbouring Stanley Knowles Co-op, Tom Cohen, chair of the Eglinton Park Residents’ Association, and Frank Peters, president of the Avenue Road Eglinton Community Association, told councillors they are still hoping to negotiate a settlement with the developers. But if that’s not possible, they urged the city to fight the developments at the OMB. “Hopefully, a spirit of cooperation and compromise will prevail, but if it does not, we must fight for the protection of principles of good planning whenever and wherever they are threatened,” King said.

The Mirror questions candidates in EGLINTON-LAWRENCE

ONTARIANS ARE HEADING to the polls June 12 to elect candidates who will form the next provincial government. The following candidates are set to run in the riding of Eglinton-Lawrence: MPP Mike Colle for the Liberal Party (who has held the seat since 1995), Thomas Gallezot for the NDP, Robin Martin for the PC Party, Lucas McCann for the Green Party, Independent Erwin Sniedzins and Michael Bone of the Freedom Party. The Guardian sent questionnaires to candidates from the four main parties.

LIBERAL

CANDIDATES

Mike Colle | 416-781-9994

2

What would you do to ensure immigrants in the area have a smooth transition?

3

What will you do to improve transit for your constituents?

NDP PC

Thomas Gallezot | 647-8988457 | thomasgallezot@ontariondp.ca | @ThomasGallezot

■ Increasing the minimum wage to $11 per hour and then further based on inflation would help many newcomers. Since 2003, our government has increased the minimum wage by 60 per cent from $6.85 to one of Canada’s highest minimum wages at $11. We must increase the hourly wage for personal support workers to $16.50/hour. This raise was included as part of our 2014 budget, and will raise the minimum wage for 34,000 publicly paid workers.

■ We have already invested over $16 billion in building the Eglinton Crosstown Line, extending the York-University line up to the centre of Vaughan and the new air-rail link train between Union Station and Pearson Airport. We also budgeted for an additional $15 billion in improving public transit across the Toronto area.

■ Before entering politics I was a history teacher at St. Michael’s College School. I was then elected as a Metro Toronto councillor; commissioner and chair of the TTC from 1988 to 1994. As an MPP, I have worked to build vibrant main streets and great local schools through Shop Local campaigns and a $275-million investment in full-day kindergarten. I have also headed the charge to save the historic postal station “K” and protect Bannockburn Park.

■ I propose to initiate a conversation between tenants, owners, developers and the government about quality of infrastructure, responsibilities, ways to settle disputes outside of court, existing regulations that are unnecessary, and non-existing regulations that are necessary. I propose to implement creative solutions to make daycare more accessible, more affordable and more reliable. I propose to keep schools open after hours for not-for-profit groups. I propose to be a voice for immigrants.

■ I would help not-for-profit groups offering activities like sport and recreation, arts and culture, English classes, cultural skills and similar available to immigrants in their own language. I would similarly support mentoring programs, networking groups and the diffusion of tool kits to help companies better integrate skilled immigrants into their workplaces, like what Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council proposes. I would organize community forums where immigrants can voice their concerns.

■ I would engage all stakeholders to start a global discussion about transit. We need to take transit out of the partisan battleground and solve this problem in a Canadian fashion: reasonable, respectful and democratic. I would propose to lawmakers in all levels of government not to cancel anymore existing transit initiative of whatever nature. I would invite transit experts and new Torontonians from other cities to community forums about transit to provide a different angle.

■ I came to Canada from France in 2007. A former engineer and patent attorney, I now work as a bilingual actor, a cultural entrepreneur and a community organizer. In addition, I am actively involved in promoting French language and culture in Toronto and helping Francophone immigrants understand Canadian culture, way of working and way of life. I’ve lobbied for the creation of the French Language Advisory Subcommittee and created the Forums CFVT. org

■ I want to focus most of all on helping people reach their full potential. Whether it is a child with autism, a new immigrant who has skills and wants to work, a business trying to create jobs but caught up in red tape, I want to work locally to find solutions that will allow people and businesses to thrive here in EglintonLawrence.

■ The best thing we can do to ensure a smooth transition is to help new immigrants find jobs. We need to break down barriers that prevent people from using their skills and working in their areas of expertise. I will work along with a PC government to break down artificial barriers to credentialing, and utilize the Provincial Nominee Program, to match immigration to the jobs we need in the community.

■ We absolutely must build the relief subway line. This is a critical subway line that will relieve congestion across North York and in particular on the Yonge subway by giving people more options to get downtown. This is the most important thing we can do to create some breathing room for commuters. This is the number one transit priority for me and for the PC Party.

■ Robin Martin practiced as a trial lawyer, and then worked in government as a senior policy advisor where she developed her expertise in health policy. Robin later worked as a public policy consultant, developing substantive expertise in the area of energy policy. Robin was instrumental, working with health organizations, in getting a universal cancer screening program adopted by the Ontario government – the first of its kind in Canada.

■ Eglinton-Lawrence is a riding of older, mature homes where energy efficiency can be an issue. I believe it makes sense to help people save money by saving energy, through making their homes more energy efficient. We have huge untapped potential to save energy. New York State has similar geography and climate to Ontario, yet our energy consumption per person is 50 per cent higher. Clearly, we have opportunity to reduce demand.

■ I understand the value new immigrants place in drop-in centres, where they can obtain advice and support during this very challenging time in their lives. I would review the resources of this kind that are available for new immigrants in the Eglinton-Lawrence riding to see how they can be improved.

■ As MPP, I would promote continued investment in transit systems and work to build on the benefit that will come to our riding from the Eglinton Crosstown line. Improving transit, however, will require investment. We must have the courage to say we are willing to pay for what we need. I, along with other Green MPPs, will demand that Ontario establish a dedicated fund to build new transit and support the operation of existing transit.

■ I would make sure that the Eglinton Crosstown line is completed – not cancelled as it was once before. Ensuring that Bannockburn Park remains a green space is also another important issue. I have been working in partnership with the community to assure that the severance and sell-off of Bannockburn Park does not take place. It is a space that is heavily used by the community in an area where there is a deficit of parkland.

THE WORLD CUP

Soccer passion ignites across Toronto

The place to be for World Cup coverage

Toronto’s neighbourhoods come alive for the games; connect online

T

oronto soccer fans are getting ready to wave their flags next month when the World Cup of soccer begins in Brazil. Being one the of most diverse cities in the world means that when the World Cup takes place every four years, there is no shortage of fans cheering for the 32 teams taking part in the tournament. And this year will be no exception. The World Cup kicks off on June 12 with a game between host Brazil and Croatia in Sao Paulo. Scarborough’s Josie Tanga is of Italian descent and she is already looking forward to this year’s World Cup, in which Italy will be making its 14th straight appearance. “It’s great,” said Tanga of the World Cup and its importance to Toronto’s huge Italian-Canadian population.

we won it in 2004,” said Kouzoukas, who grew up in East York playing soccer. “That was the pinnacle for Greek fans,” he said of the 2004 Euro championship which Greece won 1-0 over host team Portugal. That win led to thousands of fans pouring onto Danforth Avenue, waving Greek flags and celebrating for hours. It also established Greektown on the Danforth, between Chester and Jones avenues, as the epicentre for Toronto’s Greek soccer fans during major tournaments such as the Euro and the World Cup. REALISTIC OUTLOOK

FIERCE SUPPORT “We have a huge fan base, and we love our Italian team. We support them no matter what.” Tanga said family and friends often gather at her home to watch the games when Italy is playing. “We have family and friends over and we get all dressed up for the game; wearing the bracelets and the hats,” she said. “Everyone gets very excited.” Of course, food is a big part of the celebration when it comes to watching the World Cup for Toronto’s fans supporting the countries taking part. “We make rice balls and pizza,” said Tanga. After enjoying the game in the relative calm of the home environment, Tanga said heading out to celebrate on Corso Italia, in the St. Clair and Lansdowne area, is also usually on the agenda providing Italy wins the match.

Go online to our World Cup site to find individual pages for each team with the latest news, blogs and cultural connections.

>> insidetoronto.com/worldcupTO It was Toronto’s Italian fans who started the tradition of massive World Cup celebrations in the city with huge turnouts and street parties during the 1982 tournament when Italy won over what was then West Germany. As for picking a winner this year, Tanga likes Italy. No surprise given her heritage and the fact Italy has won the World Cup four times; second only to Brazil’s five World Cup championships. “The Italians,

who else,” she said when asked to predict this year’s champ. “My kids might have a different opinion, though. (Cristiano) Ronaldo is a great player; maybe Portugal. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Italy, though.” For Sam Kouzoukas, the participation of Greece in this year’s World Cup makes him proud of the team he supports. “Historically, we’ve done better in the Euro (the European soccer championships) and

Kouzoukas is proud that Greece is making its second-straight World Cup appearance, but is realistic about his team’s chances of winning it all. “It’s a great accomplishment that Greece made it,” he said. He pointed out that Greek fans did not have a lot to cheer about in the 2010 World Cup during which their team went winless in their three preliminary round games, and were eliminated. However, Greece did advance to the quarterfinals of the 2012 Euro. Given his background of playing soccer and his Greek heritage, Kouzoukas said he finds it interesting how everyone in Toronto becomes a soccer expert once the World Cup begins. “When the World Cup comes, everyone is watching and everyone has an opinion. About two weeks before the World Cup and during it, everyone’s talking about it.” Hosting a World Cup event? Post it in our online calendar. Go to www. insidetoronto.com and click ‘Sign Up’.
