For years, Barbara Barr’s doctors chalked up her breathing troubles to “sensitive lungs.” When she finally received a

proper diagnosis – idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) – she learned just how serious her problems were. Barr is one of thousands of Canadians affected by the disease, which is perhaps less well-

known than it should be after claiming the lives of Marlon Brando, Robert Goulet and Evel Knievel. With care from doctors such as respirologist Shane Shapera at the University Health Network’s

Toronto General Hospital, she may not be cured but she at least has some comfort in knowing what she is facing and in receiving the proper treatments. Shapera is one of a select few >>>PATIENT, page 2

With an estimated 10 million trees in the City of Toronto, University of Toronto postdoctoral fellow Mathew Brown’s goal of mapping out each and every one of them is certainly a tall task. Brown created a website that aims to locate and identify each and every tree within the confines of the city, something he said was prompted in part by a push by Mayor Rob Ford to cut into Toronto’s tree planting budget. “He didn’t seem to know the value of trees,” he said. “They’re CO2 absorbing so they offer air pollution benefits and temperature regulating benefits.” The City of Toronto has a tree database, but Brown said he believed it to be out of date and outright inaccurate in many cases. When he posted his website on popular news aggregate website Reddit, using the city’s tree database as a starting point, those suspicions were confirmed. “Right away, I started getting quite a few comments and quite a few emails,” he said. “A lot of people started noticing the tree database isn’t correct and >>>PUBLIC, page 8

Patient Barbara Barr thankful lung transplant now last resort >>>from page 1 doctors who specialize in IPF. “Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a scarring condition in the lungs that happens for reasons we don’t understand,” he said. “One thing we do know is that in all patients, the scarring gets worse over time.” Symptoms include coughing and breathlessness and they get worse as the illness progresses. From the time of diagnosis, Shapera said, most patients only live three to five years. “A lot of people think it’s like COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) but there’s one great big difference and that’s that (IPF sufferers) tend to need a lot of oxygen when we’re under exertion,” Barr said. Barr had struggled with her breathing for years. Prior to receiving support at the University Health Network, doctors spent years coming up with a variety of theories for her condition, which could have actually made

matters worse. “There are medications out there for other lung conditions that do more harm than good for IPF patients,” she said. Barr was the only nonsmoker in a family of smokers, and she has a family history of lung problems. Her mother died of lung cancer and her brother died of emphysema, which made her symptoms all the more frightening, even as doctors told her they could not detect anything seriously wrong. “I had a lot of colds and shortness of breath,” she recalled. “Finally, I was walking 10 feet to the bathroom and I started coughing myself inside out. I said then, ‘I don’t have sensitive lungs. I have bad lungs.’” no cure While there is no cure for IPF, researchers are making headway and current treatments can at least improve the quality of life for those living with the illness.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patient Barbara Barr uses a spirometer to test lung function under the supervision of Toronto General Hospital respirologist Dr. Shane Shapera.

“ We t r y t o o p t i m i ze patients’ care and check for heart problems, which can develop after pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancers and blood clots in the lungs,” Shapera said. “We recommend they get flu and pneumonia shots, give them oxygen when they require it and recommend they get in shape.” Patients are sometimes even given antacids, as doc-

tors believe the scarring could occur in part because of acid reflux, with acid coming up from the stomach and burning the lungs. Earlier this year, results from a trio of studies – each of which were inconclusive on their own – helped doctors determine a new drug can help slow the disease. The drug, perfenidone, is expected to come on the market in Canada and offers

hope but not a cure. “I accept that there’s no one silver bullet, no single drug or treatment that’s going to make it all better,” Barr said. “It’s all the little pieces that go together that help manage the disease.” Shapera noted some patients may get access to the drug through Ontario’s Exceptional Access Program, provided they qualify to receive it. “Not everyone will be able to get it, but we’re hopeful that we can get it out to as many patients as possible,” he said. Barr noted any new treatment is better than the options she and her fellow IPF sufferers had until recently. “Ultimately, the only treatment was a (lung) transplant,” she said. “Now, that’s a last resort, not the next resort.” Even that option was open to few patients. Shapera said estimates suggest 3,000 to 5,000 Canadians suffer from IPF but only 50 patients receive life-saving lung transplants per year.

Toronto General Hospital is certainly a leading light in that regard as the site where the first successful single lung transplant and the first successful double lung transplant were performed. While there is still no cure for her condition, Barr is thankful for the care she has received there. “For people like me, down University Avenue is where you can not only find the right answer, it’s where you find hope,” she said, adding patients who do receive the kind of care she got “get told ‘there’s nothing we can do for you; go home and buy your coffin.’” With September serving as Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Month, Shapera is hoping more people learn about IPF, particularly those who may be suffering from the disease but who have not been properly diagnosed.

Island airport expansion key issue in Ward 20 Council hopefuls on both sides of debate weigh in on pros and cons of Billy Bishop JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Of the many issues facing candidates in Ward 20 (Trinity-Spadina) as they vie for the council seat last filled by Adam Vaughan, the debate over the expansion of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is sure to be one of the most contentious. Many residents, particularly those in the southern portion of the ward, have been staunchly opposed to the possible expansion of the airport. That group has been extremely vocal over the possibility of jets flying in and out of the island airport, citing noise, pollution, environmental impact, a massive change to the fastredeveloping waterfront and other concerns. The pro-expansion group may be less vocal, but there are undoubtedly those who see perks to expanding the airport, including better travel opportunities and economic benefits to the city. Toronto City Council heard both sides of the debate this spring and opted for more information before voting unanimously to allow for further negotiations that might – but might not – lead to the airport’s expansion. Ward 20 candidate Anshul Kapoor has been one of the leading opponents of the expansion. He started NoJetsTO (www.nojetsto. ca) and served as its chair before choosing to run for council. He said the fight isn’t simply about noise, but about urban planning and the future of the city’s waterfront. “The message from the pro side is that this issue only impacts the neighbourhood and that the impact won’t be that big,” he said. “The alarming impact that’s not being looked at is the generational impact.” Kapoor pointed to the port lands, which is in the midst of a massive redevelopment, as the future direction the city ought to take when it comes to waterfront redevelopment. “Toronto was founded as a waterfront city and the cultural and economic

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport has been a contentious issue across the city, but in Ward 20 it will come into play during the Oct. 27 election.

impact of the area has to be understood,” he said. “Toronto’s the only city in the world that has an airport on its central waterfront and there’s a reason other cities don’t have that.” He added expansion of the airport would affect more than just Ward 20 residents, claiming it would reduce the usability of the city’s waterfront for visitors from outside the ward and the city. Fellow candidate Joe Cressy has also long opposed the expansion of the airport, fighting the airport bridge and subsequent expansion plans for more than a decade. “There are a lot of reasons I’m opposed to expansion, from congestion to environmental and health concerns, but the biggest one is the waterfront revitalization,” he said. “We’re creating a large, diverse waterfront that’s not compatible with an expanded airport.” He noted, at present, the waterfront is the second-

largest destination for visitors to the city, behind only the Eaton Centre. He h o p e s to see the waterfront overtake the popular shopping centre and continue to grow as an economic and tourist hub. “We want to be a waterfront city,” he said. “The revitalization isn’t a one-off deal. Waterfront Toronto has a plan – look at the wave decks, Cherry and Sugar beach, Corktown Commons and the port lands.” While most of the candidates running in Ward 20 have expressed concerns – if not outright opposition – to the notion of island airport expansion, those vying to replace Vaughan are not unanimous on that front. Candidate Sam Goldstein is of the mind that further dis-

cussion on the matter is warranted. While he would not be in favour of large jets flying in and out of the airport expansion, he said framing the argument that way is misleading. “No one wants 747s landing at Billy Bishop, but that’s not what the discussion’s about,” he said. “It’s ‘how can we have improvements that fit into the existing framework?’” Goldstein uses the island airport often for travel and said he would like to push forward discussion around improvements that would make the existing airport more user-friendly. “The biggest problem there right now is parking,” he said. “The previous councillors created parking problems there ...’” He added that a health report by the City of Toronto

shows the pollution caused by the island airport causes no more health problems than that caused by traffic on the Gardiner Expressway. He said a “very vocal group of NIMBYists” is leading the charge to ensure the airport cannot be upgraded or expanded, and cited the benefits the airport brings. “It employs 5,400 people and brings in $9 million in taxes that go toward the social services we need in the city,” he said. Fellow candidate Charles MacDonald is in favour of expanding the airport, citing benefits brought not only to the city as a whole, but to Trinity-Spadina in particular. “I think it’s a wonderful economic development opportunity for Ward 20 and its businesses and shops,” he said. “It’s a chance for jobs and tourists to come into Ward 20 and it’s our gateway into the global economy.”

MacDonald added he is in favour of full expansion of the airport as proposed by Porter, saying it would provide far better travel opportunities for downtown residents. He acknowledges he has encountered some opposition to the prospect of airport expansion in canvassing his Ward 20 neighbours, but said most of those with whom he has spoken agree the expansion would be a positive. “Folks here, just like myself, want to be able to walk (around Los Angeles) and they want people from L.A. to be able to walk into their shops, their theatres and their restaurants,” he said. With the city’s decision on the possible airport expansion yet to come, whoever claims the council seat in Trinity-Spadina will have a strong voice in determining the airport’s culture.

Pan Am Games to highlight Toronto

T

he Pan Am/Parapan Games are coming to Toronto next summer, bringing thousands of athletes and tens of thousands of fans and media with them. Tickets went on sale this week, and Toronto residents have until Oct. 6 to order early-bird tickets for the events they most want to see by going to TORONTO2015.org/tickets While they are not on the same scale as the Olympics, the Pan Am Games will feature about 6,000 top athletes from 41 countries in North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean competing in 36 sports. From July 7 to 26, Toronto will our view be the place to be for competition in many of those sports including track and field, aquatGames ics, basketball, BMX biking, tennis and much more. And right accessible after the Pan Am Games finish, across city the Parapan Am Games take centre stage in Toronto from Aug. 7 to 15. What makes these Games especially exciting is that not all of the events are centred in the downtown core. They’ve been spread out in facilities from the York University campus in North York to Centennial Park in Etobicoke and into east Scarborough. It makes the games accessible to so many more fans, and will in a number of cases give residents the opportunity to watch international athletics in facilities they can walk to from their homes. excitement

From what we see and hear among our newspaper’s readers, there’s great excitement about next summer’s Games. Residents are looking forward to attending events in state-of-the-art facilities such as the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre in Scarborough which will host aquatics, fencing, pentathlon and roller sports events next summer. They are also looking forward to the legacy of these facilities in their communities. For more on the Games and their impact on our communities, see our feature series at bit.ly/Agn5R0 There’s also no small amount of civic pride involved in hosting these Games. A good part of the world will be coming to visit us next summer, and we are looking forward to showing them what a wonderful city Toronto is.

Stalled mayoral race gives voters time to ponder the big issues The Ford family’s personal and political kerfuffle sent shockwaves through the mayoral campaign – serious enough to send things into a bona fide stall. On Monday and Tuesday, three of four mayoral debates died on the vine. Olivia Chow got out Tuesday morning to host a news conference to let voters know four west-end progressive councillors were behind her mayoral bid. John Tory, the candidate responsible for putting the kibosh on those three debates, held a news conference an hour later that was somehow less surprising: to remind voters he intended to keep promises related to gridlock he’d made during the summer. Up until the Tuesday deadline for this column, newly minted mayoral candidate Doug Ford was

david nickle the city spending his time at the bedside of newly minted Ward 2 council candidate Rob Ford – not saying much of anything. Quiet times aren’t always a bad thing, though. And in this one we should sit a spell and think about where we are, where we’ve been, and where we want to go. Until last week, Toronto was in what ex-mayoral candidate David Soknacki correctly pegged as a referendum on Mayor Rob Ford. For four years, Ford put many Torontonians through a meat grinder of embarrassment and insult. His activities somehow provided some measure of comfort to others. We lined up on either side of that

very line Ford drew: with Ford More Years on one side, and really everything else on the other. When Doug Ford gets going, he’ll be presenting Mayor Ford’s agenda without the personal issues – and also without his little brother’s charisma that would make him a serious threat. Which is to say: here on in, this election might finally be about ideas. Well, not entirely the ideas: we’re all a little partisan, some casting ballots for New Democrats and certain Liberals, others voting for certain other Liberals and Conservatives. Some of us feel strongly enough about that to pick a mayor now. But for the rest of us: what an unexpected opportunity to pick not so much the person of the mayor, but the kind of city we

want. We might ask: do we really want to pay more taxes to build a subway in Scarborough and more stations on an electrified GO line? Would we rather send that property tax levy to build a downtown relief line, and skim more tax revenue from the land transfer tax to build a downtown relief subway line and buy more buses? Do we want to contract out garbage collection? What about bike lanes? It’s so much easier to think about these questions when we’re not also deciding how we feel about all the other ugly matters that have consumed us until now. Clarity is a rare and wonderful thing. Best savour it while it lasts.

Public invited to check out Toronto Tree Map website >>>from page 1 my site allows them to move trees or change trees to the right species.” Brown borrowed the computer code for his project from a tree map in Oakland, California, and has mapped more than half a million of the city’s trees. The city’s tree canopy has been altered greatly in recent years, not just due to new plantings, but also due to trees being felled by last winter’s ice storm, beetle infestations

and age. “By using crowd sourcing, it’s a good way to keep track of the changes that have happened and that continue to happen,” Brown said. He is urging the public to check out the map and move trees that are located in the wrong spot. He will soon add features allowing the public to remove or re-label trees to properly identify them, and to add private trees to the map.

Doing so will take but a minute of a user’s time, though users will have to sign up to use the site and data added or changed will be tracked to ensure the database remains accurate. “People can take a picture and geotag it so they can get the exact location right away, and there are a lot of ways to identify what kind of tree it is,” he said. Brown knows the value of a good tree canopy. He lives near

Kew Gardens in the Beach and notices the stark contrast between the neighbourhood he calls home and the downtown core he frequents as a U of T student. “I think the nicest, oldest trees in the city are in (the Beach) but when you go downtown, it’s very urban – there’s a lot of concrete,” he said. The Toronto Tree Map project gives Brown a chance to use his own experience while exploring two of

his passions. He has a background in climate change science and is studying computer science, with a focus on web development and data visualization. He is hoping to use the data collected to plot native versus nonnative species and use satellite information to map carbon dioxide and other data.

Most RACES Show on Earth! JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s comedy scene is notable for its diversity, and few shows showcase that more than the Most RACES Show on Earth! (MRSOE!) The show started in Toronto in 2004 under the direction of local comic Neil Bansil and is set to return after five years touring the U.S. Downtown Toronto-based Filipino-Canadian comedian Keith Pedro is one of the show’s acts and noted the array of talent on display continues to impress him. “It’s not just a Spanish comic, a black comic, a Caucasian comic and an Asian comic from Toronto; there are people from New York, Montreal, all over the place,” he said. “It’s like Neil Bansil is Nick Fury and he’s gathered up the Avengers.” In that framework, Pedro likens himself to Captain America. “I’m an old-school guy – I lay low and do what I’m told,” he said. “If Neil says ‘do 20 minutes in the dark,’ I’ll go out there and do 20 minutes with my eyes closed.” The fact there are so many cultures represented in the MRSOE! does not mean audiences will be in store for hours of race-based jokes, however. While the show places its diversity front and centre, once the show begins, the comedians are simply there to be funny, not to speak about their own

cultural experiences. “Neil’s vision was just to have a bunch of kids with different ethnicities going out and being funny,” Pedro said. “It’s not ‘here’s a Puerto Rican telling Puerto Rican jokes.’” Each comedian brings a unique style to the table, with Pedro bringing the crowd up with his energetic, upbeat set. “I had one critic describe me as ‘if Aziz Ansari drank 10 Red Bulls,’ which was a huge compliment,” Pedro said. He finally started doing stand-up after being told he should try his hand at comedy. Having grown up watching Saturday Night Live and In Living Color, the downtown resident started out with dreams of doing sketch comedy, but found open mic nights were the easiest way to

get stage time. From virtually the first moment he stepped on stage, he began thirsting for more work. “They told me at first I had three minutes,” he said. “Some of the other comics said ‘three minutes? That’s a long time,’ but I did my three minutes and still had a lot I wanted to say out there.” He continued working open mic nights and smaller gigs, essentially doing stand-up as a hobby for roughly a year. When he learned his girlfriend was pregnant, he decided it was time to put up or shut up. “It was time to start making money by putting on my own shows,” he said. His decision to pursue comedy more seriously has paid off. He can be seen on MuchMusic’s Video on Trial and has earned a role on Degrassi: The Next Generation. He has also performed as part of the Filipino Comedy Tour, which recently concluded a run in Hawaii and California. He is excited to return to the MRSOE! for the first time since 2012. “It’s so much fun to be part of – great lineup and great crowds,” he said. The Most RACES Show on Earth! will take place at the Panasonic Theatre Saturday, Sept. 20.

transit Tory skips out on Transit’ debate w‘Big Mayoral front runner John Tory withdrew from a transit debate this week with Olivia Chow just a few hours before it was scheduled to begin. The event still took place on Monday, but with only Chow taking part. Earlier in the day, Tory’s campaign team released a media statement confirming he would not attend the Big Transit Mayoral Debate, co-organized by the advocacy group TTCriders and the Ryerson University Student Union. Tory blamed “extraordinary demands” on his time along with Doug Ford’s entry into the mayoral race for his withdrawal from Monday’s debate as well as other events planned for this week. Rob Ford and David Soknacki had also agreed to attend before both withdrew from the mayoral race. Chow used the opportunity to hold a solo Q and A on her transit plans – and continually criticize the absent Tory in the process. About 150 people attended the event, which was held at Ryerson.

Mayoral candidates Chow, Tory debate development issues MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Toronto developers did not get a promise from John Tory or Olivia Chow to make building homes in the city less expensive, but each mayoral candidate said they’d speed the process up. The local home-building industry isn’t hurting – it employs 322,000 people and Toronto council approved $21 billion in new developments, including 7,000 condominium units, last month alone – but Ontario Home Builders’ Association members still have complaints about the time the city takes to approve building permits and zoning changes. They also dislike government-imposed costs, such as the municipal land transfer tax and development charges, which builders say can add up to 20 per cent of a condo’s price. “There’s a perception the developer is paying for it. It’s the purchaser that’s paying for it,” said Gary Switzer, Toronto

Chapter chairperson of the Building Industry and Land Development Association. During a morning debate, which was overshadowed by Mayor Rob Ford’s dramatic departure from the mayoral race last Friday, Chow and Tory refused to budge on the city’s revenue-taking, but offered the industry other help. Chow promised, if elected, to defer development charges for at least 10 years on projects containing 20 per cent affordable housing and, as added incentive, would approve their zoning and site plans within one year “because faster approval means saving money.” Getting approval for a development, including a zoning change, took 18 months when she was a city councillor, and now takes three years, Chow told industry representatives at the Westin Prince Toronto hotel in York Mills. “That’s insane.” But while Chow laid some blame for delays with different city hall departments she said

need to be brought together, she added those departments are “understaffed somewhat” and need more employees. Tory said he’d challenge developers to build private affordable housing units on available public lands, such as on Toronto Parking Authority lots or Toronto Community Housing properties. The former Ontario Progressive Conservative leader said the city could speed its approval process by installing new technology builders could use online, instead of dealing in person with a city bureaucracy still “wheeling around files in shopping carts.” After hearing from the renovation side of the industry, Tory said small building projects should have a new and different review process for building permits, one that “doesn’t get to the political level.” Chow objected; building permits have nothing to do with the political process, but Tory insisted local city councillors do get involved, which

he said complicates things. “I’m saying they should never get the call.” The two candidates spent much time at the debate arguing unproductively about each

others’ plans for funding a downtown relief subway line.
