THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

Spring, 2014

Editor in Chief Winter is over and a new season often inspires talk of change. Change for the sake of change can feel empty, but change that comes naturally and at just the right time can be an antidote to stagnancy. When you read the pages of The City Spaces, I hope you read with change in mind. For me, there is nothing more inspiring than the image of an amazing kitchen, dining room or bath. I hope you appreciate the design both architectural and interior, the living spaces that your neighbors call home, and I hope you can envision at least one of the design elements within our pages, in your home. At the magazine we pride ourselves on “local,” within our region, showcasing spaces that were artistically crafted by local architects, builders, designers, local cabinetry, stone work, flooring and the list goes on. The proven talent that El Pasoans possess leaves us no reason to ever go outside of our area when it comes to the home, always using first the talent that is here. From the time I was a small girl I would go on play dates at friends’ houses that almost always involved cleaning and rearranging their rooms (much to the delight of my friends’ mothers)—the early markings of my need to create order and beauty, to feel “grounded,” I was constantly rearranging things in my home, reconfiguring them time and time again to fit different spaces. My entire life I felt compelled to create art in this medium and help others play in their spaces as well. This confessed need is probably the reason The City Spaces is so dear to my heart. I hope that you experience many of these transformation moments while reading this season’s issue, and again, I hope that you choose to use our local resources. Until the Summer Issue,

A Home’s Glorious Return to

Contemporary

Basics I

n the beautiful oasis that is the Coronado Country Club hillside community there are many homes that from the outside capture the true essence that is El Paso’s history and culture. But among these there is one home in particular that not only epitomizes El Paso’s past, but also the richness

of the sophistication that defines our city today. Apart from

housing a collection of modern and contemporary art 25

years in the making, the home itself is also a masterfully planned piece of architecture that has been formed to fit the needs of a real, living breathing family. Overall the home has gone through two big renovations with minor uplifts over the years—taking the homeowners from a very traditional tone (the drapes match the couch) to this understated and wowing contemporary masterpiece. The dining room is the first example of sublime function and poise that this home possesses. A unique room the flows from the kitchen to the formal living room, the table itself is actually two tables cleverly put together to create a unique shape and beautiful aesthetic appeal. They each contain a leaf that can be added or removed to further add dimension and (of course) more individuals to the space—seating up to

Taking a step deeper into the home from the dining room, the kitchen sits in the back of the house with wide gaping French doors into the back patio allowing light and the radiant landscape to slip into the whitewalled space. At first glance, the room might not appear grand in size, but on further investigation the carefully planned kitchen has more than its fair share of storage space skillfully hidden in the natural folds of the house. From the outside of the home, between each French door is a structural pillar. From the inside in between each of the doors is a black reflective cabinet door that when opened reveals deep floor to ceiling pantry space—making innovative use of the previously unused space of the structural pillar. The kitchen’s true staple piece is its alluring black granite stone countertops that reflect both the deep granite slabs in the floor as well as the dark mirrored cupboard doors lining the walls. The rectangular island is the primary working space in the kitchen and sits delicately in the middle, complete with trendy stools and a stylish sterling silver sink. This too houses a magnificent amount of storage possibilities 20

with the numerous sleek drawers and pantry space. The kitchen also offers conventional appeal. The oven hood was custom-made for the home and suits the Wolf and Sub-Zero state-of-the-art appliances to a T. Which was the perfect touch for the homeowners who are avid gastrophiles and who insisted on having a kitchen that allowed them the space and industry their culinary skills required. Back down the hallway is the family den. Being the primary room where the 22

congregate, the space adds simple comfort and warmth to the formal nature of the rest of the house. With a fireplace, cozy minimalist rug and a smaller fridge for drinks, this space has the best of hot and cold—along with a lovely collection of Mexican and Linda Lynch artwork adorning the walls and mantelpiece. Like the dining room, this room can also be reconfigured to accommodate more or less guests with functional swivel chairs and a custom-made eye-catching bookshelf. The room is also warm with its bright limestone floors, tying in the ornate vinyl python skinned countertops on the far wall.

Perhaps one of the most visually appealing rooms of the home is the formal dining room, sitting directly in the middle of the house, a piece of it spilling into some of the other major focal points of the home including the kitchen, entryway and dining room. Lavish white couches juxtapose the beauty of the dark wood floors that were restained in one of the more recent remodels. Robert Carlson and other notable artists adorn the walls in simple scenes that create chic, understated beauty that enrobes the eye in color. Looking backwards is a wine rack housing the family’s best stores of fine wines—the space was formally a wet bar that never functioned properly, but today sits in the back of the room, adding pops of color to the classic harmony of the space. Another notable space is perhaps one that many overlook in their own homes—the entryway. Many people gloss over or do not adequately decorate the “first impression” of their house—but this is most certainly not the case in this home. Walking into this house, the entryway and adjoining hallways are the glue that holds this refined address together. With large art pieces from Robert Carlson, Roman Abramovitch and Anna Jaquez, as well as other local artists—these white walls, like the entirety of the home itself, are anything but ordinary.

estled in an array of scenic mountain views and natural duck ponds lays a gem caught between the better of two architectural worlds. Located in the serene Heritage Farms

community in the Upper Valley, this custom Old-World home holds many splendid surprises. The Old World exterior of the 2,500 square foot home captivates sight with its antique infused finishes. Reclaimed wood dating back one hundred years, brick, and metal are used throughout the exterior of the home for a European aura, but the focal point is the arch-brick entrance. At the main entrance custom doors welcome you to a larger foyer that instantaneously introduces a contemporary vibe with a fiery yellow three-dimensional wall panel, acid-stained concrete floors, and fourteen-foot ceilings for an open loft feel. “The challenge really is in designing the exterior in a way that does not “give away” the interior being designed in a different

Nester explains, “The main house zone has a thermostat that is connected via Wi-Fi to the internet and not only can it be controlled remotely via any smart device but also checks the weather forecast and anticipates any drastic exterior temperature changes.” Although, the uniquely designed home faced the challenge of incorporating two entirely contrasting architectural worlds into one, from an ‘Old World’ exterior to a modern infused interior. The home translated impeccably from rustic to contemporary in an opening of a door and as Nester explains, “like good engineering, good architecture should feel simple and features should feel obvious - like they have always been there and as if the building could not exist without them. Everything should have a place and the house should facilitate all your daily living needs and it should do it while still being a place you absolutely love to be in.” A custom home is often associated with a higher price tag, but as Joseph Nester explains, “It doesn’t mean you are paying more for a house, it means that you are getting exactly what you need, and

a good builder will provide just that. The process of designing and building a custom home requires a lot of face time and it is important to feel comfortable with the builder in order to share the kind of information that is necessary to fully understand the wants and needs of the customer. A custom home should be just that - a home that is custom made and tailored to the current and future needs of the customer.” Understanding exactly what a customer needs and wants, exemplifies the distinctively designed - Kaizen Custom Homes, which exude energy efficiency, luxurious amenities, and a style infused concept that could only be executed by the finest builders.

whose experience and expertise in the field of home furnishing has led her home to be one of City Magazine’s featured “Spaces.” When thinking about the spaces that appeal to her Miss O’Rourke keeps it simple, “I like spaces that are warm, inviting and eclectic.” She presses on to point out that creating a living space that fulfills her needs is sometimes a matter of perception, “I don’t think it is a challenge as much as it is fun to find things that I enjoy being surrounded by, be it wall colors and textures or a sitting area that is inviting and comfortable. There is so much variety available today for every taste palate and price range that the challenge is to decide what you like the best.” Obviously heading up an iconic furniture store has some advantages and Melissa is aware that she is subject to some great influences when it comes to home design. “Getting to go to markets around the country I have the opportunity to see wonderful showplaces and see the trends as they unfold which is very enlightening. The largest influence though would definitely be my mother, Charlotte Korth. She was a very forward thinking merchant, she had beautiful taste, she was a designer that had the ability to grasp the look and feel that her clients wanted for their homes and helped them achieve it beautifully. Growing up I learned subtle things from her like how important lighting is to the ambience of a room. The few overhead light fixtures and chandeliers in our home all had dimmer switches. Mother was always rearranging furniture in our house growing up so I learned about making comfortable spaces both for family and for entertaining. My mother thought of design aspects well before they were the trend. For example, in our home she built in the 1950s she designed a cooking workspace in the kitchen that was counter height (now referred to as a kitchen island) she put stools around it so we could eat or just hang out in the kitchen. At Charlotte’s, when the store was on Raynolds Street, she displayed furniture in room settings so customers could visualize what it might look like in their home, including well

With furniture and design a family tradition the impact of the business is apparent in her home décor and personal aesthetic. This is a fact that she takes pride in, but it doesn’t mean that O’Rourke keeps her house in flux according to the latest trends. “Good quality and design have always been a mainstay at Charlotte’s, it is what my parents based their business model on. I have the opportunity to buy furniture all the time for the business…so that might be why I don’t have the urge to be buying new furnishings for my home. I buy things I love so I am happy with my choices for years.” With years of professional experience and a home that houses the heart and warmth she seeks, Melissa O’Rourke has some simple advice for all El Pasoans seeking to create their own beautiful space, “I would say to buy the best quality you can comfortably afford. The detail of the craftsmanship of the distressed wood throughout the space and the artistry of the iron places this in the category of best wine cellar in town, bar none. There are many different ways to add a room like this to your house. Ideas range from simply transforming a littleused closet to adding a whole new full size basement or guesthouse offshoot. Either way taking the leap and making an addition of this kind is sure to add enjoyment, multiplicity and value to your residence. Also, think of having a new place to actually dine with your guests as you indulge in decadent cheese and wine tastings. Or think of evenings spent in with your significant other; enjoying each other’s presence and the seclusion of your new exotic wine cellar. However you chose to build this into your home, a wine cellar is sure to give you the best of European flair and delicious nights in, sipping the best wine in your store. 54

Since her childhood almost 30 years ago, Mayela Perez always knew she wanted to be an interior designer. The first signs that she was on the right career path were evident when the fledgling designer, not yet into her teen years, would rearrange furniture and accessories in the homes of her family and friends. rez Mayela Pe igner Interior des

It’s been four months since Perez took over as proprietor and already she’s causing a buzz in the design community. Not only she is offering unique home décor and furnishings for commercial and residential projects but she’s also able to offer a complete array of design services to her growing clientele. Perez is well versed in a number of design software programs that enable her to transform her client’s desires from the spoken word to images on paper. She favors AutoCAD 3 ds max, V-Ray, Revit and Photoshop as the means by which she can show her clients various interpretations of their projects before any actual work gets under way. Perez notes that, “Being able to visualize their project from a number of vantage points is key to her client’s decision making process.” After such a short time since the opening of Dekora, Perez is pleased to already be working on several installations. One that has been particularly rewarding is a new streamlined condominium building, which will house eight sophisticated apartments. “My mission statement,” says Perez, “is to provide El Paso and the surrounding community with the art of transforming interiors.

project in 2003 has twined into a notion of

entrepreneurship and artistic venture for an El Pasoan

couple. When Maredith Stockmeyer and her husband

Juan Stockmeyer purchased their home in the UTEP area, they began to focus on creating an outside bar/kitchen area in their new backyard. Then they extended it to placing an outdoor fireplace as well, then a smoker and arbors with a seating area. With no particular training or educational background and only their artistic aesthetics to their credit, the Stockmeyers turned their banal backyard into an oasis of beautiful designs and creations. Once the Stockmeyer’s friends began to attend cookouts and parties, they quickly took notice and began requesting their backyards be revamped as well. Maredith, having always wanted to own her own business, sought this out to be a chance to integrate both a passion for craft and create a local, thriving business that would help people obtain the same quality of décor for their outdoor living conditions. The love of nature and artisan crafting formed the groundwork for The Backyard Patio, the Stockmeyer’s own business.

Maredith and Juan began working out of their own home to construct furniture and outdoor ensembles, mainly working with recycled metal and reclaimed wood found in junkyards. Their aesthetics combine the culture of El Paso with their own personal taste, crafting eclectic pieces of work, including candelabra’s, plant pot holders, easels and other hand crafted artwork to help bring an alluring element to any home. What’s most interesting about the Stockmeyer’s work is that most of their pieces are done from recycled and reworked material and most of their metal pieces aren’t painted but rather maintain their original color before being 62

The Stockmeyer’s don’t stop their venture with metal work; they also make beautiful artisan glass pieces, jewelry, furniture, doors and ornaments. Walking into their backyard, you immediately get the feel that this is a local gem. Their work is not only impressive and visually appealing, but personalized to fit the feel of our city. A stellar metal handcrafted Virgen de Guadalupe is mantled on a wall, suiting both the local semblance and the artistic channeling of The Backyard Patio. It is surely a must for all El Pasoans. Visit their Facebook page for more information or check out www. thebackyardpatio.com. Also, visit The Backyard Patio at TI:ME starting April at the Montecillo Retail Center. The Backyard Patio is often found at Ardovino’s Desert Crossing Farmers Market and Johnny Lolita’s Market in La Union, but the future looks bright for the local business. The Backyard Patio will reside at TI:ME, a thriving retail center at Montecillo come April. The locale will incorporate recycled metal shipping containers into their design, keeping with the Stockmeyer’s innovative idiom of recycled materials. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

BORDERLAND Spread throughout the magnificent city of El Paso, Texas are some extraordinary structures that continue to stand proudly with an incredible historic significance. Attached to many of them, are these eye-catching bell towers that in years past served a variety of purposes. From the Mission Trail to the downtown area, as well as in many other locations, their stories like songs can be heard echoing around the city, even though many of the bells themselves chime no longer.

part of the once longest road in North America sits the Presidio Chapel, of San Elizario and the mission churches of Socorro and Ysleta. The church of San Elizario had been erected twice before, on or around its present day location. Originally built by Spaniards between 1727 and 1744, the church stood for at least 100 years before almost becoming a total loss in 1846 due to looting while the United States military occupied the area. Construction began on a second structure in 1853 and was utilized for 30 years or so before the third and current building was completed between 1877 and 1887.

The Socorro Mission or (Mission Nuestra Se単ora del Socorro) originally built near Fabens, was relocated to Socorro in 1683. In 1829 The Socorro Mission was destroyed by flood and was rebuilt in 1843, half a mile away from its previous location. This adobe church has cottonwood and cypress beams supporting its flush roof. The stepped parapet at the front of the building rises up into a single belfry with a cross above the parapet.

The configurations of all three churches were very similar, with some differences in their respective bell towers. The earlier two churches possessed a triangular tower at the center front end of the buildings; the bell tower of the current edifice is rounded with a curvilinear gable running the length of the adobe structure. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

One of the original bells that survived the fire is displayed within the mission’s plaza. The Kress building and Union Passenger Station are among several structures in the downtown area with unique bell towers and heading farther east, on the all-girls campus of Loretto Academy, one might hear different versions of the same story that has left many wondering if its belfry is haunted. When the Kress building was first erected in 1937, the idea was to incorporate regional style architecture. The Southwest style is visible in the Native American influenced ironwork on the balcony, as well as in the decorative latticework similar to that of a Mayan temple. Paper Products

Wallpaper isn’t just for walls

anymore... | By: ROBIN NILAND |

f the word “wallpaper” conjures up images in your head of peeling pastel floral tapestry competing for attention in a room crowded with dated furniture, prepare yourself for a pleasant surprise. Wallpaper is making a resurgence, but not just on walls. New techniques in laser imaging are making it possible to bring striking details and bold colors to life on paper. “Bright colors and fun patterns are a great way to add character to any home,” says Mariel Galbiati, owner of Fig Home in El Paso’s Kern Place. She cautions that trends change often, so finding less permanent ways to incorporate an of-the-moment style in your home makes good design sense. So, for those not ready to commit to an entire crimson red fleur-de-lis wall in your living room, wallpaper can be used in many other creative ways. Once you have found a wallpaper pattern that you love, try using it to bring new life to an old piece of furniture. A small bookshelf is a great place to start because it should be narrow enough that it will not require careful pattern matching since there won’t be any seams. Choose a vinyl coated wallpaper if the shelf will get a lot of use; self adhesive wallpapers are much easier to apply--and subsequently remove when you tire of it--than those

requiring glue. Most wallpaper can be applied directly to finished or painted furniture, but you may have to do a little sanding depending on the product you are using. Apply the wallpaper to only the back of the shelf by first measuring and then cutting a piece that is just a 1/2 inch or so larger all the way around. Once you have positioned the paper and adhered it to the furniture, trim it using a craft knife. Another way to use wallpaper without actually applying it to your walls is with statement panels or frames. Try a grouping of 3-8 smaller coordinating picture frames to create a focal point in your room. Using a single roll of wallpaper, mount pieces onto thick cardboard that has been cut to the size of each frame. Insert the covered cardboard into each frame, remove the glass, and hang closely together in a gallery style for an artistic effect. If you are working with a larger space, have three pieces of plywood cut to the same size, anywhere from 2’ x 3’ to 3’ x 7’. You will need to sand the edges to ensure that you do not rip your wallpaper when you apply it. Cover one side of the board, wrapping the sides for total coverage. Purchase several picture hanging kits and install one on the back of each board to hang on the wall. For those with artistic abilities beyond cutting straight lines, wallpaper can be cut into endless designs and used as decals almost anywhere. A large chalkboard with flowers, animals, or names cut out of bright wallpaper would make an inviting entry in a mudroom or child’s playroom. If you have a particular wallpaper in mind that doesn’t fit in with your decor, consider a portable catchall box. This is as easy as wrapping a gift and can be used to store magazines, mementos, or even just keys and change. Most craft stores sell simple, stylish boxes that would work well for this project, but even a plain ‘ol cardboard box can be made into something special in under an hour. Covering the inside and outside of a box will require some very sharp scissors and a straight edge for a finished product you will want to show off. Matching the pattern is less important on the inside of the box where objects will obscure the seams, so start with the outside so you have an uninterrupted facade. Removing wallpaper from an entire wall when styles change can be messy and very time consuming. But that doesn’t mean you can’t experiment with the new colors, patterns, and textures available on modern wallpaper, just do it in a less permanent way. Check out local design stores that carry wallpaper such as Charlotte’s, Fabrics West Interiors, and Sherwin Williams and you might be inspired to get crafty!

op Art was a movement of modernist art that first struck the UK in the mid 50s and the US a few years later. The style represents sentiments

of rebellion against the idea of “fine art” by incorporating images and icons of pop culture (items that were previously not regarded as worthy of art) into intricate paintings or sculpture. This style took the world by storm and changed the attitude and longitude of art itself forever. Well folks, Pop Art is back. We’ve all seen the famous scenes. Andy Warhol’s renowned Marilyn Diptych silkscreen painting depicting the repeated image of Marilyn Monroe’s face or his other well-known work, Campbell’s Soup Cans completed in the same medium.

The craze has come in and out with passing appreciation and here it is yet again—but with a modern twist. The great aspect about today’s morphing Pop Art genre is that bold and sometimes alienating colors are no longer what defines it. Today Pop Artists have branched out to bring out the best of their founders work. Many scenes can be found with only one pop of color, or simple muted tones. Black and white has even emerged in some works, with a few allowing simple features like muted red lips to pop off the canvas. The effect is subtle but nonetheless jaw dropping. Pieces like these are great for almost any living situation, from bachelor pads to family residences. This is true because the subject matter for these works of art is just as varied, as they are virtually limitless. The scenes can be as simple and understated as an object like a phone, coke can or bright red lips to pin up girls, super heroes (a great way to add flair to a little boy’s room by still maintaining a level of class) to more serious depictions like a tear-filled human face filled with emotion. Having a piece like this simply adds a classic piece of modernism that will add spice to any room in your home. If you are interested in attaining a work for

Solar/Energy Saving Solar panels are the first thing people think of when they hear the word “solar.” The technologies of these panels are being incorporated into a lot of other products, Most of the products with solar capabilities are of course, outdoor products. From pool accessories, gardening products, to lighting, cameras and more. The most common product out there has to be those simple and inexpensive path lights that are solar powered, but the realm of solar powered products has expanded. Pool purifiers, self-cleaners, or even heaters are now being made solar powered to save energy. Affordable solar lighting accessories for your patio or backyard are now as common as battery or electric. Table lamps, string lights and other lighting products are being created to serve all of your night-time outdoor needs. Energy saving products are more readily available to consumers to lower your energy usage indoors too. Automated products are being created to shut off power usage when not needed. Appliances, fans, heaters, and chargers all take up energy even when simply plugged in but not in use. An easy solution are “Conserve Socket” products, which usually come with time intervals or smart technology that detect when an appliance is not needing power and shuts off, not using any power itself. These solutions are intended to reduce energy waste and save you money in the long run.

Climate Control Thermostats are now being created with smart capabilities that are meant to save you money in the long run. They start at about $200, but are said to make up its value in your utility expenses. Besides being cool looking, with touch screen features, the convenience factor of being able to control the thermostat by voice command or from a remote location using

what

makes investing in this so appealing. Smart thermostats are created to learn your heating and cooling preferences and deliver just the right temperature right when you want it. The great thing about having it connected through your smart phone is that it will notify you when a filter needs replacing, or extreme temperature issues arise. Being able to save unnecessary energy is a plus since these smart thermostats are easy to turn off from work if you forgot to do so, or are programmable to turn on at certain times of the day. The idea of a “Smart Home” is now a consumerfriendly trend that will only continue to grow in popularity and ease, thanks to the growth of smart phones and tablets. These computers we carry in our pockets or bags with us, along with the ability to use the internet virtually anywhere, allow us to use the inter-web system of our daily lives to control our home from anywhere. Wireless capabilities of today help to simplify our lives, and allow us to think “yes I can do it myself!” If you think you forgot to turn on your security system, or turn off that kitchen appliance you left on this morning, or just want to make sure your kids are doing their homework like they are supposed to be, the answer is now at our fingertips, literally. Companies are now producing affordable consumer-friendly products to ease our worries and help our futuristic lives of today be a little easier to live. Smart homes aren’t for everyone, and you can make the choice to start your journey by making small changes to your home and get it to where it can one day be. Take the steps you are comfortable with, and grow it from there. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

The Energy of Spaces | By: A-1 KITCHENS |

Beautiful spaces radiate inspirational energy. They evoke subconscious associations that bring meaning and inspire a lifestyle. This inspirational energy is what distinguishes stylish homes from those atmospheres not conducive to human tranquility. To capture that energy in your kitchen you should consider the size and shape of the room, door and window location, where the kitchen is located in relation to other rooms, and the size of the family. These spatial distributions are more than architectural considerations; they define the use and meaning of your space.

96

www.thecitymagazineelp.com

We Build Dream Kitchens Spatial distributions get their meaning from our relationships with people according to Professor of Communication, Elliot Gaines, Ph.D. In a recent article published by the Journal of Creative Communications Dr. Gaines explains that a “spatial distribution will begin to define the meaning of the space in a room according to the potential uses of the objects and their relationships with people.” Thus, highlighting space planning as an important consideration. The kitchen is a good example of how good planning brings meaning into a space. Kitchens are a place for coming together.

A-1 KITCHENS

by Sierra

The way these are laid out has a profound impact on how we interact with our family. This is why today’s kitchen areas are open to other parts of the house—so that the cook can keep in touch with members of the family as he or she works. Good space planning that allows for human interactions, like in the case of kitchen areas that are open to other parts of the house, enhances the use and meaning of that space. Kitchens forge a sense of identity and hold a special value for one’s family therefore the design must be equally inspirational and functional.

THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

Chi is a subtle charge of electromagnetic energy that connects

your energy to the energy of the space around you. This energy runs through everything, carrying information from one thing to another. The chi of your body basically carries your thoughts, beliefs, and emotions. As you release old chi it allows for new energy chi. If you have ever seen or had a photo taken of your Aura with Kirlian photography this is an

example of how to visualize chi.

Chi in the home can be very strong, especially around doors and windows. For example, if there are many straight doors in a row in your home, it allows for a fast moving chi, and can make it difficult to relax in the home. If you are able to see from the front door to the back door in a straight flow, it is considered a “money in-money out aspect, which could cause your finances to come straight in and out of your home. A way to slow this money flow would be by placing a large plant between the two doors in order to slow the energy down. The larger the windows are in the home, the livelier the space will be. If the windows face the sun, it brings in a fiery, vibrant chi. Windows that are left bare allow more chi to enter, as putting heavy curtains or shades will block the chi. Skylights also allow for vital chi to come into our homes. They create a strong exposure for spiritual and mental chi to come in from the cosmos, in turn helping you to feel more intellectual and spiritual. If you have the choice of more than one entrance to your home, consider using the one that allows vibrant chi into your home. Many of us have garages and enter through the garage door, but often this is a darker or crowded space, which does not allow for uplifting chi. It is also considered vital for the breadwinner of the home to enter through the front door at all times to feed the chi and maintain financial security for the residence. Make sure to not block the path to the front door as well for good flow of chi.

THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

For many expecting couples creating their baby’s nursery is an exciting bonding experience. A new life brings a new start and what better way to start such an amazing journey than with a nursery that reflects the new parent’s personal style and ideas. The new nursery will become a sanctuary that parents will spend a great deal of time in when their baby is born. This makes the feel of the nursery extremely important. Putting love into this room will make those three a.m. sessions feel comforting not only for baby, but for the new parent as well. Whether the new parents-to-be personal style is industrial, classic, or modern, 2014 has many exciting nursery trends that are sure to please. The biggest color trend for nurseries this year is, interestingly enough, navy blue. It is popping up everywhere from walls to accent pieces to necessities like diaper pails and blankets. Navy blue is a great neutral color that looks amazing with contrasting accent pieces and borders. Gone are the days where yellow is the only option for couples waiting until birth to find out their babies gender. Navy blue can be used for gender-neutral nurseries and makes adding accent pieces a cinch once the baby is born. Purple has replaced the most traditional pink that comes with the anticipation of a baby girl. Everything from soft lavenders to deep dark purples helps to create quite the lavish nursery environment. Black has taken precedence over white this year. Black sectioning of once white walls with contrasting accessories can look industrial and modern. Black chalkboards that actually can be used to further create masterpieces are equally popular. Accessories play a huge role in the décor of the nursery this year. No more boring wallpaper and picture frames. We are talking everything from statement cribs, to decals, oversized lettering and canvas art. More mature elements for nurseries are taking over the classic children character-themed ones of the past. This helps to ensure that the room can actually grow with the child and suit his or her needs accordingly. Parents are choosing abstract art instead of nursery rhymes or blocks. Chevron print remains a big hit and continues at the top of the design list. Stars are making a comeback but in a very subtle and delicate, almost angelic way. Silver stars can be seen splashed on walls or intricately hung from the ceiling of the nursery. Lighting can be something as extravagant as a chandelier or very basic, simple and modern. Elegant and sophisticated furnishings are now common in the nursery. Cribs come in a variety of colors and can be very sleek and polished for a modern look or embellished with molding and tufting for old-world charm.
