“THE DETAILS ARE NOT THE DETAILS. THEY MAKE THE DESIGN.” – Charles Eames
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
T
he one constant in designing or decorating a home is that it needs to be personalized and say something about the owner. Though color palettes may change, the underlining theme is that your space says something about you and is personalized to your liking. Though we’ve included some of the spring design
trends, we also included spaces throughout El Paso that are
moving our city forward and creating a new perspective of us to those outside of our city. We want you to flip through this issue and look at how the Kern area is developing and changing in a positive move forward. Like cocooned caterpillars, houses in the Kern area are being transformed into butterflies as owners remodel and contract local experts to upgrade their homes. We want you to take a look inside El Paso’s newest hotel downtown, Hotel Indigo, and look at how the details and space are enveloped with designs that are unique to our city. These spaces inspire to take characteristics special to El Paso and implement them into the design of your own space. We want to help encourage and set you on the right path to the latest trends happening this spring. Whether you are changing out your kitchen for the newest all-black look or leaning towards Pantone’s rainbow of spring 2016’s trending colors, let these pages give you the details to create your own special design. Don’t live in the ordinary when you can live in an exciting space.

ess really is more when it comes to the sleek home of the Munoz-Asiain family.
The

juxtaposed with the clean lines and simple décor have created a comfortable and ideal atmosphere for the family to enjoy and form new memories in. Fortunately, the Munoz-Asiain family was very involved with the design of their home and was able to lead the direction of their new home.
The modern and minimalist home was built three years ago for the family by Pointe Homes. The family worked closely with builder, Carlos Villalobos, from Pointe Homes and designer, Chad North, to bring their dream home into fruition. “We had not had this style of home before. We used to live in a traditional style home [before this one],” said the wife of the home. In going from one style to another she said, “We have always loved clean, modern lines and the contemporary style. [My husband and kids] agreed on the style since day one.” When looking for a home, or starting the process of designing one, homeowners usually have a wish list of things that they want. For some, it’s a certain number of bedrooms/bathrooms, a big kitchen, or a two-car garage. For the Munoz-Asiain family they wanted an open and simple concept – no walls to block any rooms of or close any spaces in. Another thing on their wish list was a common area where they could get together to eat, do homework/study, watch films, listen to music and entertain. “We were very in sync and Chad North understood our style in our first meeting.” 30

Kern Place is El Paso’s oldest suburb. Founded by
Peter Kern in 1881, many of these homes are over one hundred years old and while many have stood the test of time, others have been renovated to maintain their elegant allure. Interestingly, Kern Place has a rich history. After the new railroad was built connecting El Paso to the growing United States, Peter bought the land seeing the potential the town had for further growth and development. As the owner of a successful jewelry store, Peter’s early years in El Paso were filled with marital bliss and the birth of his first child, Madeline. But after ten years, he lost his business and his wife and child abandoned him. Needing a clean slate, Peter took

plan succeeded and he obtained $50,000 in cash, Kern returned once again and began developing the sandy hill, which would later become parts of Kern Place and Mesa Street. Today the homes stand as a testament of the cities history as part of the Wild West. “The Kern Place and Rim Area have such a nostalgia and charm that’s notably hard to resist. The neighborhood boasts unique homes of bygone eras, tree-lined sidewalks leading to friendly parks and scenic views, accessible hiking trails through the arroyo and mountains; not to mention it’s in the heart of El Paso, so you feel connected to everything,” explained Lindsay Coulter, a Kern Place resident. Lindsay and her husband searched two years before they found their 1930s home. By focusing less on the retro orange tiled bathroom and the purple vanity that came with the home, and more on the sturdy walls, welcoming arches, expansive picture windows, high curved ceilings, stately fireplaces, hardwood floors, hand carved ceiling beams, original faceted crystal chandeliers, and more, Lindsey and her husband Tyler bought the house and quickly got to work on the renovations, excited to make the house into their family’s home. “From the walls, to the floors and ceilings, every surface had to be updated. The kitchen, dining and bathrooms had to be completely restored,” Lindsay said. “Throughout this process we tried to use a balance of finishes – focusing on the features and fixtures that meld some of the original design elements with clean updated accents. This home has so much longevity and potential that it seems as if this will be a labor of love for many years to come.” www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Spring, 2016

BEFORE Mila Farrah, another Kern resident, had similar feelings about the area. “I always dreamt of having a house in El Paso and remodeling it one day,” Mila recalled. “Really, in high school I didn’t spend money on clothes, I spent money buying furniture and décor in Mexico, and surprising my parents with more things that they needed to store in their warehouse until I was older.” And when the time was right, that is exactly what she did and Mila purchased a Spanish-influenced home. “The first time I walked in my new house, I immediately had a vision of what I wanted to do with the renovations. Open areas, clean layout, colorful accents and a beautiful, open kitchen. I wanted an all around warm and inviting home for tons of entertaining. Remodeling my house was exhilarating, exhausting, and so much fun. I loved every minute of making decisions, and creating something entirely new . . . but nothing beats the day that you’ve completed your project and you finally get to move in and make it your home,” Mila explained. But the benefits of living in Kern don’t stop there. Not only is the area steeped in story and charm, but it is also a really fun neighborhood to live in. “For someone who loves to entertain, I chose the right neighborhood,” Mila said. “The greatest part about living in Kern Place is the community. So many of my lifelong and new friends live within a few blocks of me, and being able to walk 200 feet and be at Madeline Park with dogs, babies, and great company all around . . . you can’t beat that lifestyle. Everyone is active and welcoming, and there’s never a dull moment.” Kern Place is certainly more than just a neighborhood. For those lucky residents who dwell within this historic part of El Paso, living here is a daily key to the past, a delicate reminder of the fascinating history of the city we all love. 40

ew is a rare bird. It’s hard to find, and often difficult to come to terms with. It was even Shakespeare himself who once said, “there is nothing new under the sun.” But every once in awhile, something new erupts and not only is it fresh, but the change it brings makes the little hardships in life that much easier to bear. While out and about in our city this week, I stumbled across something new. But it wasn’t the difficult “new,” it wasn’t the hard-to-take “new” – it was the sublime “new.” The rare “new” that only comes once in a blue moon. If you haven’t heard, there is a new shop open for business on Stanton Street. Open since April 16, Paradigm Texas has infected the Sun City with style. Owned by John Zimmerman and Robert Lomnicki, this power couple has brought their years of experience travelling and working for world-class designers to West Texas with

And if you love what you see, Lomnicki and Zimmerman also offer their interior design services. “We are always changing what we have so it’s always fresh. What we have here are items we would have in our own home,” Lomnicki said. “We want to offer this city a new view point and perspective through pieces that speak to experience – items that are timeless and storied.” With most of the items in the store being either handmade or fair trade, the effect is simply flawless. Pantone’s Top
SPRING COLORS | By: KRYSTA AYERS |
Our homes can change with the season – it’s not a crime. And there’s easy ways to do so. Pantone just released their spring colors and in honor of that, we’d like to show you how you can take those shades and welcome them into your home. Like anything that you bring into your space, you can make them personable and add your own flair to them. This spring, brighten up your home and don’t be afraid to dive 76
into the pool of exciting colors.

ROSE QUARTZ As Pantone’s Color of the Year, Rose Quartz has been all over interior design magazines and all over the Internet. This color looks effortlessly great in any room. Switch things up in the living room with a bold wall in this shade, apply it to the bathroom with hand towels and matching shower curtain, add it to the bedroom as a duvet cover, or even add this to the kitchen in the form of dinnerware.
SERENITY Paired with Rose Quartz, this is a home design dynamic duo. However, if you can’t “think pink” and want to stay blue, you can solely use Serenity in your home to lighten up the mood and create a breathable space. You can take this to the kitchen and paint your cabinets and walls in this shade for a Serenity overhaul. Trust me, it looks awesome. Or, if you need new appliances, Morphy Richards and other brands have everything from teakettles to ovens in this beautiful shade.

SNORKEL BLUE Make a statement in your home. Take this color in a sophisticated way to the living room with a satin couch, keeping the rest of the surrounding colors toned down. Or you can make this more playful by adding this to the kids’ bedroom with a bedframe or desk in this color.
BUTTERCUP A bright shade of yellow may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but maybe it should be! Getting chairs in this color could add a perky feel to your kitchen table or adding this color to your bathroom could lead to a bright and positive morning of getting ready. Not ready for all the brightness? You can make subtle additions of this color to your home with accent pillows or picture frames. Cheer up, Buttercup!
LIMPET SHELL A brighter blue than Serenity, but not as bold as Snorkel Blue, this beachy color will put you in the right mood. Bar stools in this color are a gorgeous addition to any kitchen island or bar area and patio chairs in this color will also make your outdoor patio pop with a fresh color. If you have a hallway where your wall gallery is, painting it in this shade will make those photos and artwork even more eye-cathing.

FIESTA A great way to make a simple change in your home is by adding or changing out side tables or other accents in your home. Fiesta is exactly what you might think it is – an exciting bright color. If you have more earth-toned furniture in your living room, add some life this spring with a bright read accent table where you can place our magazines on top. Accent pillows for your sofa are also a good idea, along with sheer curtains for your windows.
GREEN FLASH Not for the shy, Green Flash can easily add charm to your home this spring. You can paint the walls of an entire room in this color paired with deep jewel tones and your space will instantly be transformed to a chic and sophisticated space with character. Or you can add a chair to your bedroom in this color for an easy upgrade and added charm.

Mirror on the Wall… 80

irrors are usually overlooked when it comes to decorating a home, and it’s often because we
have mirrors in every restroom, so people would rather invest money on a piece of art rather than another mirror. Mirrors are actually a great piece to put up in your home because they can serve different purposes and with the incredible variety available these days you should have no trouble finding one perfect for your home. Mirrors can be used as a focal point in a room – think about a huge leaning mirror in a dining room or living room. In addition to being an artistic focal point, it will add depth to the room. For a mirror to be the center of attention doesn’t mean that it needs to be a huge mirror. You can find a small interesting piece and coordinate your furniture around it; consider a mirror with an odd shape, or maybe a mirror with a really striking frame. Mirrors can be used to make a dramatic affect anywhere you put them and a bold mirror can set the decorating tone for an entire room. If you’re really not convinced you want a mirror as a main piece in your room, you can always get a mirror and treat it strictly as an art piece. There is a plethora of art galleries and art pieces that work with mirrors. You can be as bold as you want with it and make it a conversation starter. Get artistic – hang a bunch of different mirrors (like an art gallery wall) or experiment with different materials to create your very own frame. Is the frame of your mirror www.thecitymagazineelp.com
81
THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN
too glossy and modern? Sand it down and create an antique effect on it. It’s your call. Another great thing about mirrors is that they help enlarge any space. Since they are reflective, mirrors add light to any interior and this helps achieve a bigger look in a room. Try placing the mirrors next to lamps or across windows, so the light can be reflected and it can light up the whole room. This idea is perfect for that awkward corner or room that you feel is too small. To make it work, hang a big mirror for a more spacious effect; remember, the bigger the mirror the “bigger” the room. This concept can also be incorporated into mirrored furniture. There are dressers, coffee tables and side tables that already have a mirror included in their design. These are great options as well to bring that shine into your room. You can have a plant on top of a table with a mirror and it will give the illusion of more foliage, or have a mirrored dresser in a corner to give your room more depth. Please just don’t put mirrors on the ceiling because those are never cute (not even in cheap motels). Mirrors are for far more than just looking at yourself, they are versatile and when it comes to interior design, they should be a key piece in everyone’s home this spring.

For those of us with busy schedules, Wal-Mart often seems like the easier way to stock up you fridge and feed your family. That doesn’t necessarily need to be the case though. Local El Pasoan, Patsy Hermosillo and her two daughters, Adriana Clowe and Vanessa Brady, took to buying locally grown produce and making that the norm for their families. “We’re mostly vegetarians so having quality produce in our homes has always been

important. Now that there are small children in the family, it’s become even more essential that they have access to healthy snacks like fresh carrots or organic orange slices,” Clowe said. “True Food started after a casual visit to a local farm where we soon began purchasing organic produce for our own personal use. So many friends and family members were interested in where we were getting our vegetables from that we saw an opportunity to make this readily available to all of El Paso,” said Clowe. The original plan was to work with as many local farms as possible, seeing it as a way to incorporate more items. They changed their approach to work with a core group of three local farms to provide produce for the box program. El Paso True Food works like many local meal preps do. It’s easy, it’s smart, it’s healthy and it’s local! By investing in the three core farms, they have made it possible to bring local produce to tables all over El Paso. Every Wednesday by midnight, El Pasoans can log on to their website, elpasotruefood.com, and order a box for $30. The items included change depending on what is in season and what is ripe for the farmers to pick, but boxes come with eight to ten items. What is really great about this box program is that farmers are able to deliver the produce by Saturday morning; boxes get arranged and are immediately distributed to pick-up locations around town – a very fresh way of obtaining produce. “In addition, our members 87

A sleek kitchen renovation will leave you with any excuse to spend time in your new fabulous kitchen. Plus, you need an excuse to change things up around your house, don’t you? Take it from The Rolling Stones when they said, “No colors anymore, I want them to

turn black.” Apply that to your kitchen. Strip your cabinets of the old outdated paint and give it some edginess. Or, if you’re the type of creative person that likes to change things with the seasons, this is the new trend for the colder temperatures. Think black marble countertops, sleek black appliances, black barstools and matching decor. If you have an island, picture a black base and butcher block with either a dark or light finish (I recommend the light). The light fixtures in your kitchen can also take your kitchen into the style direction that you want to go. If you want to dive

If this is a DIY project, the good thing about turning your kitchen into a lustrous black oasis is that sanding down your cabinets does not have to be as intense. Because the color that you’re applying is dark, all you need is a quick run-through with sand paper to smooth your cabinets and then you’re ready to paint! Do a quick and easy black backsplash and you’re well on your way to creating your new kitchen. If you don’t have black appliances, there’s no need to splurge for new ones. This black kitchen trend plays well with white and stainless steel appliances and accents. You don’t have to do “all black everything” if the color seems a little gloomy to you. A wall painted with black chalkboard paint would be a nice renovation to freshen up your space. Another home idea is to paint the cabinets but use your countertop space as a way to contrast with white marble or white matte laminate. Take this trend and fit it to your style, whether you like the minimalist look or prefer a more Romanesque

s interstate progression compels highway overhaul, El Paso remains a critical component of the freight-line industry in Texas. Soon, I-10 will acquire a new expressway that will alter transportation in the most convenient of turnpikes, carving through the Chihuahuan desert where our notorious name, “Paso Del Norte” may barter new significance for both local
residents and Texans alike. Though the development of the new expressway will benefit our economy, its formation encompasses flat lining the Globe Mills landmark to its initial grade, and therefore reducing its existence to an iconic memory in El Paso’s history. Other than a favorite look-out point to view battles during the Mexican Revolution, Globe Mills served as one of six major ‘”high grade” flour mills in America, providing wholesale grain and mill products in an era when the interstate was nonexistent. Despite having no interstate until the 1960s, El Paso was widely recognized for its prominence of independent commercial gain in a generation where rail and refineries, such as the Globe Mills, existed to flourish the economy. From the beginning, the Mills manager, Claiborne Adams, made it his overall objective to encourage the residents of El Paso to purchase local flour using the El Paso Morning Times newspaper to broadcast industry headlines with phrases like, “Use Globe Mills flour and

help the southwest grow,” as well as, “Every sack guaranteed to be the equal of any flour made anywhere by anybody.” With certainty, Adams believed in the importance of domestic independence as the city of El Paso harvested rapid advancement of infrastructure and enterprise. In addition to Mills flour distribution, the building owner and tycoon, Will E. Keller, boasted industrial perception and cognizant knowledge of economic sustainability, especially after receiving praise for constructing the first fireproof flour mills in the American West. After building his first mill in California at the prime age of 33, Keller built his fifth one in 1910 at a cost of $135,000 in El Paso when he was 42 years old; this was his first mill outside of the Golden State and one that generated a revenue of $15 million in 1922. According to Prince McKenzie, Director of the Railroad and Transportation Museum of El Paso, soon after the new installment of El Paso’s mill, Keller started another company beside it called Globe Ice and Cold Storage, which grew to be a necessary acquirement for the Southern Pacific Railroad’s freight box icing. Keller’s new industrial refrigeration company had quickly become Southern Pacific’s first ice down station for their produce box cars. Ice blocks weighing 200 lbs. would be skid onto the ice cars from loading docks where men would slide the ice onto the cars with heavy prongs. The ice down process became so successful, Southern Pacific would remove all other cars from their 106

track in order to allow clear passage for their “Pacific Fruit Express,” which delivered fresh produce from the Imperial Valley in California to Boston in a 24-hour period. Alongside location convenience, just adjacent of the Pacific railroad, Keller was able to harvest a generous profit from Globe Mills, as well as supply the city with hundreds of jobs, which all contributed to a healthy economy. The city not only consumed domestic wholesale flour, but the Pacific Fruit Express delivered fresh picked produce often by rail to El Paso residents during the lifetime of the Globe industries. In 1935 Keller passed away, at which time, his company in El Paso began to struggle. Later, Pillsbury bought Globe Mills for $3 million in 1940. Sorry grandma ‌ wood panels around the room are out, for now at least until it’s modernized and made cool again.
Tiled Countertops While granite and quartz countertops are completely in, we must say good-bye to plain-Jane tiled counter tops in the kitchen and bathrooms. Unless they are intricately designed or extremely colorful, tiles are just boring.
Pot Racks as a focal point Although this was a popular trend from 2009 forward, it has been dying down recently. While pot racks are a great space saver (especially when it comes to the larger pots) they can be an eye sore and build up dust if not used regularly.

401(K)’s...
What EVERYONE
Should Know | By: KEVIN O’NEILL |
Let’s start with an overview of 401(K)’s – which are one of the most powerful retirement

savings tools available! As few employers offer traditional pensions anymore – a 401(K) is often your only employer-based option. Let me emphasize that if your employer offers such a plan and you’re not participating in it, you should be. More importantly, you should be trying to take full advantage of it by maximizing your contributions. Last but not least, most employers offer a match to your contributions so by not participating, you are literally giving money away. In most cases an employer automatically deducts contributions from their employees’ paychecks, before taxes, so we don’t actually feel the pain of the withdrawal; it’s

automatic. When is the perfect time to increase your contribution? Every time you get a raise. That allows you to invest more and not notice a drop in pay! With 401(K)’s, you decide how much to put in, up to the legal limit. But because you fund your 401(K) with pretax dollars, you lower the amount of income you have to pay tax on. So while you will probably receive a smaller check, it might not be as small as you’d think.
Securities offered through Investors Capital Corp. Member FINRA/SIPC. Advisory services offered through Investors Capital Advisory Services. 6 Kimball Lane, Lynnfield, MA 01940. (800) 949-1422
The tax savings really lessen the impact on your net pay. In some cases, the contribution is barely noticeable, especially if the withdrawal drops into a lower tax bracket. • Your employer may match all or part of your contribution up to a certain level. Employers typically give a 3% match but some companies offer more. Employees may be vested in these bonus dollars through years of service with the company. A wise employee should determine what the match is and at the very least, contribute enough to receive the maximum match value. • Funds grow tax deferred so all the money compounds year after year but you pay no taxes on those investment earnings until you withdraw funds, usually in retirement when your income and tax rate has lessened. This results in you having more retirement funds and paying less taxes when you use them. • However, you’ll pay income tax and possibly an early withdrawal penalty if you withdraw early. • Did you know you may be able to borrow a significant amount from your vested balance at a reasonable interest rate? • Another real advantage is that Creditors cannot access your fund for payment on DEBT.
