THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

“Can anything be sadder than work left unfinished? Yes; work never begun.” – CHRISTINA ROSSETTI, AUTHOR

Greet the summer in style. The City Spaces is the influential go-to guide that directs readers in the El Paso region to discover local resources for design, decorating, architecture, and renovation. We celebrate the talented professionals we have in the region and encourage you to choose local when it comes to any of your home projects. When you hold this issue of The City Spaces in your hands it will feel different. That’s right, we’ve upped our game and changed the texture of the cover. We are constantly evolving and will venture to be more tactile than we’ve ever been. I fell in love with the paper texture on my latest visit to the printers and I had to have it. This paper is new in the market, so El Paso, we are setting trends. Speaking of trends, as I was looking at the photographs of our features for this month, I was reminded that interior design is merely the fashion trend of your 30s, 40s, and yes, even your 50s. Interior design trends develop just as our clothing style develops. Throughout the years, I’ve watched the world take on different trends from home design that often mirror clothing design. I’ve noticed those who followed the “latest” trends, constantly keeping up with the “new,” and it’s been interesting watching those smart buyers who purchase foundation pieces that remain timeless. So, for me, it’s about investing in a timeless piece and then changing the various trending pieces. The best example I can think of in the fashion world is pencil skirts. Pencil skirts are timeless; Jackie O wore them in the 60s, and though they’ve come and gone off the runway from time to time, pencil skirts remain a staple. We pair them with the newest trends and colors of blouses, shoes and belts, continuing again the following year with the latest trend and color. The equivalent in the interior design world would be a solid leather sofa with beautiful legs and arms. We call this our investment piece. This piece can be paired with the season’s latest trends in pillows and rugs just as that trending blouse is paired with the staple pencil skirt. As you seek inspiration, look for both the investment pieces as well as those latest trends that can be easily changed. From one inspired reader to another, turn the page and experience the summer issue.

Last year for the Fourth of July we sat out here.” We were now standing by the man-made cliff (man-made by Mark Nash) in Boone’s yard. Overlooking the west side, you could sit on the cushioned rock wall and enjoy the view. “It was so nice. You could see fireworks from Western Playland and from the El Paso Country Club. I even fell asleep out here. So I think that’s what [my husband and I] will be doing again this year.” www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Not only is Boone’s backyard complete with a luscious garden and pool, her and her husband have also carved out space for a grill and sink. Perfect for long summer days, the grill has provided the two, as well as family and friends, with quick BBQ meals. Straight down the path from the grill stands a solid rock building with a big dark wooden door and a circular window above. “This is the greenhouse,” said Boone before I could even ask the question. We walked inside where I was pleasantly met with a large wooden table, more plants and a work area where Boone said she does her artwork. “This was actually my husband’s and Mark Nash’s idea.” Wanting a place to keep her more fragile plants, her husband and Nash came up with a rock-walled greenhouse to keep things far from ordinary in the backyard. Growing up in New Orleans, Boone was very accustomed to plants popping up and nature growing around her with no problem. “It’s a little bit harder [in El Paso]. It’s too hot for some of these plants.” But Boone has certainty worked with everything that she could. Her garden is plentiful and green. And her pear tree, which unfortunately attracts nearby deer, provides enough fruit to make multiple pear pies – and even give some away as gifts to friends and family. Gail Boone has certainly created her own one-of-a-kind garden here in El Paso. It is a sanctuary overlooking the west side of El Paso that Boone and her husband — and the garden snake that we ran into during my tour — thoroughly enjoy year round.

stark contrast to the green of the plants that draw visitors in. Vibrant pink hortensias and deep ruby geraniums line the front entrance towards extravagant wooden doors. This is the home that Rita Silbert Davis designed for what she considers “the modern career woman.” Davis looked to her own past to bring inspiration for the space and to reflect the owner’s lifestyle in a simple, yet cozy feel. The interior designer redefined the home for an owner looking to revamp the residence she had occupied for 30 years. The domicile was a blank canvas, open for the well-known Davis to come in and update the space to bring comfort and a more personal touch to the abode. The warm colored, beveled wood doors are accompanied by uniquely shaped handles that are reminiscent of ashtrays. The handles are brassy, rounded squares which perfectly fit into the grasp of someone reaching to open the door. They instantly become one of the many unexpected features that bestow character and function well in the home. Upon entering, the house immediately transfers one to the glory of a past life, 1920s finery distilled in the form of dazzling glass, shimmery metals, and lush paintings juxtaposed against pale pink and blue hues in the formal room. The wall colors add an airy feel to a room bathed in natural sunlight streaming in from surrounding windows. Rita Silbert Davis mimics the openness of the area with petite furniture and admits to cutting off the back of a sofa to create a lowlying piece that maintains its function without overpowering the room.

Reflecting on her work, Rita Silbert Davis notes that the purpose of interior design is to perform, “A good job that lasts. You have to reflect the tastes of the client within boundaries of good taste.” Seen with the use of old and new pieces in the home design, Davis makes it known that “you don’t have to spend a lot of money if you’ve got good taste.”

f you think that stand-alone tubs belong only in a small British country house or on an episode of “Downtown Abbey,” think again. Tubs have been around for ages now, and they are quite essential in any bathroom in order to get a relaxed bath and soak all your worries away. These types of tubs were replaced by built-

in tubs, which were mounted into the corner of a bathroom and almost always had some sort or Jacuzzi jet function in them. People nowadays are ditching those noisy tubs and opting for something sleeker and architecturally pleasing to the eye. Stand-alone tubs are very versatile because there are a plethora of models available and one will complement your bathroom perfectly. The trend today is to transform a simple bathroom into your own private spa. People keep upgrading their showers with steamers, or a hydromassage showerhead and swiping their old whirlpool tubs for a normal tub that embodies functionality and style. Stand-alone tubs not only let you submerge into a quiet and relaxed soak, but it also serves as décor for your bathroom since they are quite the architectural piece. They accentuate any bathroom magnificently. These tubs come in a wide range of materials to fit into any homeowners taste: acrylic, cast iron, stone and even wood. Stand-alone tubs have been categorized in recent years for being a high-end item to acquire in a bathroom, not only because they are more expensive, but also with the high demand lately, it is not unusual to find them in a house in the suburbs or even a modest apartment in a large city. Choosing your perfect stand-alone tub is not difficult. You can take into consideration the style that you like, but it is also important to choose the right material to encourage durability. Acrylic, which is the most common material to use, tends to discolor and crack with time, but it is pretty versatile and affordable. Wood, stone and cast iron are bolder choices that will pay off and boost the style aspect of the space since tubs made in those materials stand out more and give any bathroom more finesse. Another style aspect to be on the look out for while purchasing a standalone tub is the base of the tub. A more contemporary home might want to incorporate a more structural tub, with an organic or geometric base. For something more retro and classic, a claw foot tub is the right one for you. Stand-alone tubs are also very versatile because they can be placed in any part of the bathroom: on the side or in the middle as the main focus. You decide where and you can put it there. Stand-alone tubs also let you incorporate a shower. If you need to have both placed in the same space, or if you prefer to have a separate shower by itself, this style option allows for that kind of versatility. Treat your bathroom like any other part of your house, since it’s a room that’s practical and can be unique. Throw some fragrant bath salts into the warm water, put on some relaxing music and immerse yourself in your own private spa.

During El Paso’s infamous summer heat, you may think it’s impossible to stay cool without emptying your wallet. And while it is more expensive to run that AC or cooling unit in your home, there are other ways you can escape the heat without breaking the bank. Here are a few tips to help you and your home beat the heat this summer.

Tip 3 Another great tip to not add extra heat is by avoiding running appliances that can cause your home to take on unwanted warmth. Avoid turning on the oven and if you have to run the washing machine or the dishwasher, just make sure you wash full loads and consider letting your clothes air dry. Also, a small trick is making the most of natural lighting and not using artificial lights in your home when it can be avoided.

Everything but the Kitchen… Cabinets

So the exiled dishes of dinner’s past no longer have to gather dust on the long forgotten top shelf of your kitchen cabinet? Correct! Open kitchen shelving is a big deal right now, allowing accessories like glasses, bowls and plates to be the jewels of the room for all to see. You’ve spent months looking for the perfect glasses and dinnerware, so now is your opportunity to show them off!

OUT

Just as cabinet doors are out, so are closet doors! The hassle of opening, closing, pulling and sliding, a door that you use every day can

grow monotonous. Your closets should be well organized enough to where you’re not afraid to share it with the world. And even if it’s not, seeing your clothes everyday will give you some

Feminine Bed Wear Beds recently are leaving nothing to the imagination with the skirt-less style reigning supreme. This popular style is a way to cut down on frumpiness and prevent you from hiding dusty boxes of childhood memorabilia under the bed.

Seeing Double

Matching nightstands on both sides of your bed is so passé. Your grandparents did it, your parents did it, now it’s time to break the mold. It may seem to be the easy way when shopping and filling your room, but will definitely create a hotel-esque vibe.

Color of the Year Lime is in now and not just in your margaritas! The colors of the summer are either extremely vibrant or light and airy.

Lime can be a bit of both, as an accent it creates a light feeling and brightens up a room, as a statement wall color though it is exciting and bold.

OUT

So Last Summer Paisley Print will never die, but let’s give it a rest for a while. It’s had its fair run so let’s try something new with our décor; Hawaiian, retro patterns, a funky print, anything!
