BOOK REVIEW | By: KRYSTA AYERS |

“kate spade new york: all in good taste” by: Kate Spade New York A book on entertaining, Kate Spade throws out all of the rigid rules in this pretty coffee table book. This will guide you into being the perfect hostess that everyone will want an invite from. From recipes to personal essays, this book even covers modern-day etiquette like Instagramming at the table. We could all learn a thing or two from these pages. “Milk and Honey” by Rupi Kaur The poetry book that you’ll enjoy reading this summer. Young poet, Rupi Kaur, lines up words in the most beautiful way. Many celebrities repost her poetry and illustrations on their Instagram. In this sleek black hardcover, you can turn the pages in no particular order and be met with words that will instantly make you feel a flurry of emotions. “Eyes on the Street: The Life of Jane Jacobs” by Robert Kanigel Robert Kanigel captures the life of the author who wrote, “The Death and Life of Great American Cities.” This is the account of one single-mother who changed the way that people look at neighborhoods and buildings. She won every debate, challenged everyone around her and protested an expressway that would have cut through her beloved Greenwich Village neighborhood. “Tequila Mockingbird: Cocktails with a Literary Twist” by Tim Federle After you’ve taken the time to remodel your house or redecorate after being inspired by our magazine, make a drink for yourself! This is great for anyone that needs to unwind (don’t we all?) and loves a nod to great novels. Some of the drinks include: Romeo and Julip, A Rum of One’s Own, Are You There God, it’s Me, Margarita. e are often asked whether the

homes we feature for this magazine

are in El Paso. I assure you that they

are—they really, really are. We scour the

city looking for homes from 2,000-square

feet to 6,000 and above. There is no specific style we look for. From art deco, to vintage guru, modern glam, traditional Tuscan, minimalist-modern designs to extravagant gardens and outdoor living, each home that we feature is right here in the El Paso/Las Cruces region. Find that hard to believe? Then it’s time you get to know the design talent living in the Sun City. In this issue, we give a nod to the great Hoover House located in Sunset Heights, where UTEP president Dr. Natalicio resides, as well as the predecessors to her. It is a great piece of El Paso history and you’ll love looking at the pictures as you flip through. With the condition it’s in, you won’t believe how old it is. We also paid tribute to some local artisans in the city and saw what creative things they are doing. This time we spoke with B Brothers Furniture to see what hand-crafted specialties they create—from wine racks to big furniture pieces. Also, if you haven’t heard of living walls, let us be the ones to introduce you to this economic trend. And since it is the summer issue, we also have some fun DIYs that include alcohol and cooling off. With this adult twist on frozen popsicles, your summer parties will be ones to remember (or sometimes forget!). Become inspired as you flip through our pages. Whether you want to try something new with your house, need a new DIY project or want to try out a new recipe for your next hosting event, you’ll find it in this issue. If you know of a home that catches your eye, or of a space that you’d like to see in the pages of The City Spaces, reach out to us. I look forward to each of your letters, attached with pictures of an idea you found on our pages, or a local home retailer who you met after reading one of our articles, or a DIY project that you want to share with our readers, so keep them coming. Enjoy the summer, I know I am!

Point Homes, Carlos Villalobos, built a show home for the Festival of Homes that was so beautiful it was featured in the Parade of Homes. While this show home is a little

upgraded, thanks to the help of interior designer

Denisse Murray and her company Idesign, the added furniture is used to show possibilities to future home owners and shows them something different than the average cookie cutter plans. In the front, your eye catches the nice cantera and stone work. Its properties are unique in that it offers color, texture, durability and a softness that allows for detailed carving and cutting. These along with slopped roofs with timeless and proportional shapes, are some of their signature looks. The concrete roof tile may seem simple, but that is the point. With this form and coloring, it gives the home an individualistic character. The first place you enter is the courtyard by the front door. Here you have the options for decorative materials that suit your taste since it provides a line of separation with the gate and gives you some privacy. Some ideas for using the courtyard’s space could be plants to highlight the neutral tones of the house or maybe even chairs for relaxation and drinking lemonade in the warm El Paso afternoon. Entering the house, you walk into a foyer that gives privacy for the living room. This is the real wow factor of this house. You are welcomed with vaulted ceilings, a fire place, dining area, a kitchen and all the natural lighting you could want. It opens towards the back of the house that will give you access to the patio through a sliding glass door. The first thing you notice when entering the room are the faux beams in the ceiling made from dry wall. To play on the overall theme of the house, a Winter Wonderland, the paint on the beams resemble frosted

The bathrooms are similar in style following the winter theme. Sparkling like snowflakes, the countertops are made of white quartz. Each are equipped with a shower, but the master bathroom is a modern take on a snail shower that curves with an open door. The other two have frameless shower doors. Interceramic provided the same herringbone tile in both the bathrooms and living area, to ensure that the house had consistency. Making your way outside to the large covered patio through the glass door in the living area, it can compensate a sitting area, a bar area and grill. Designed for being a great trifecta for entertainment, the patio is great for family get-togethers. As seen through Point Homes’ creative lens, this extraordinary living space aspires to entertain and excite all who enter. For more information please contact Pointe Homes at (915) 790-1515.

his garden might look a little familiar. When we last saw it,

it was in the winter issue, when

the weather didn’t fully allow the

rose bushes to flourish and the backyard to put its best foot forward. It was still a beautiful space, providing warm earthy colors, but we had to show it again in order to give it complete justice. With a space so heavily influenced by European styles and family gatherings, the garden allows for plenty of room to entertain and also to be inspired by the different elements. The garden is a spacious haven of soft green grass, tall colorful rose bushes, a tranquil waterfall and chickens—yes, chickens. The view doesn’t hurt either. Since the house sits high up on a hill, the backyard overlooks El Paso, providing gorgeous views both day and night. It’s calming and invites you to drink a bottle (not just a glass) of wine while gazing out into the city. Double doors from a cozy, carefully decorated and mature study room lead you outside to this garden of bright greens and reds and pale pinks. It is a picturesque garden, the epitome of a space crafted for ultimate relaxing. You can picture yourself with a book in hand, laying out in the grass—with a portable fan of course, because this weather is not ideal—soaking in the sun. As soon as you step out into the garden, your body immediately relaxes; you begin to inhale and exhale a lot slower, your shoulders drop, and thoughts float away, letting the tranquility of the space take over. The homeowner says that this has been a progress. She reiterates from the last time, that her children have grown up in this house. She feeds the several koi fish that are swimming in the waterfall pond built on the second level of the yard. The waterfall covers up a hideaway seating in the background that connects to the small pond. It’s the perfect place to take

a late summer nap, the music of the waterfall as the soundtrack to your dreams. The second level is also home to the hearty chickens, who roam around freely, flightless residents of the backyard. They provide the family with eggs that they eat for breakfast. In a dramatic, very European effect, the walls are covered in a beautiful tangle of green vines claiming their property. It looks a lot more lush in this summer season. The homeowner walks around explaining that only recently has she joined the garden club in El Paso, shockingly taking first-place prizes on the plants she submits. You would not be able to tell from her backyard that gardening is a recent love. Another aspect more available in the summer is the pool. What used to be used to throw birthday parties when the kids were younger, has now been a more relaxing focal point to the backyard. Along with the tall trees that provide a cool shade, the pool also offers an alternative for beating the El Paso heat. The homeowner seems very relaxed giving me a walk-through of her backyard paradise. She tells me how the lowest level of the yard is not used too much, but it allows for access to the arroyo where she walks her dogs. Whether you’re a human, fish, chicken, dog, or even a turtle, roaming around this backyard is like being at home. A picturesque sunset is soon to encompass the sky, a view that the homeowner appreciates and can see from the comfort of her perfect garden.

Living Walls A

| By: AUSTIN NORTH |

rt is an incredibly diverse subject, found in painting, music, writing and more. One lesser known art form is that of the living wall, a vertical garden tailor-made to be a practical piece of art. These living walls, most

commonly known as green walls, are planted with a diverse set of plants in a specific configuration to become a beautiful and unique piece of art. Unlike a vertical garden or lawn, these living pieces of art can vary in growth, color and flower to create a completely organic and visually appealing design. They can be found in larger art galleries, and have been designed by esteemed artists for important buildings around the world. Their popularity has been growing in the Northwest and Western United States, as well as within the Southwest region, where succulents are most commonly used due to their longevity and resourcefulness concerning water. While each climate zone requires its own variety of plants, the planting process is for the most part the same in most cases. The plants are grown in soil within bags or blocks that are then installed onto the wall with a simple screen and watering system to keep them upright and sustainable. When done well, interior walls can last for over five years without needing much maintenance or replacement. Living walls serve an important practical purpose. Their main use in urban areas is to reduce the overall temperature in buildings—they serve as external insulation that absorbs solar radiation to keep buildings at, and even cooler than, the ambient temperature. Everyone knows that plants remove carbon dioxide and produce oxygen naturally, though not as many are aware that they also filter and clean pollutants already found in the air. In a country where a reported 80-90% of people spend a significant period of the day inside, an interior and even exterior living wall can help absorb and clean commonly found pollutants. Sick building syndrome, which refers to toxic fumes that are found to be released from the furniture, the décor and even the materials within a building, is considered a significant health issue of modern times that can be solved by living walls. Adding office plants is already a common practice to improve air quality, a purpose that the living wall serves to a much more significant degree. Living walls can be increasingly found in urban areas due to the often abundance of vertical surface area on large buildings, though their popularity in homes and other domestic settings is steadily rising due to their practicality beyond their visual appeal. Studies have shown that being close to nature can significantly increase a person’s wellbeing. Nature in the home has been shown to be calming and to increase comfort levels, and nature in the job can noticeably increase job satisfaction. A cutting edge structure such as a green wall shows that one is committed to their employees’ or family’s wellbeing, as well as to contributing to a healthier environment.

ake on the task of creating and cutting the perfect geometric mirror. Geometric patterns can add depth and be the unique, eye-catching focal point to any wall looking to be noticed. This DIY project is easy to achieve for anyone interested in trying their hand at glass-cutting and playing with fun shapes.

Sure, the thought of cutting glass may seem intimidating, but rest assured this DIY will layout everything you need to calm your nerves and avoid any accidents you think may occur. Ready? To begin, decide what type of geometric shape you’d like to create. Then, go ahead and find yourself a basic, simple, unused mirror that you won’t mind chopping up. Depending on your chosen shape— like an octagon or emerald—be sure to adjust the measurements accordingly. In your list of supplies and tools, have a glass cutting tool in reach along with: A ruler A permanent marker An X-ACTO knife or blade Contact paper Metallic and/or gold spray paint Glove and safety glasses for your protection For this DIY, we’ll focus on creating an octagon-shaped mirror. Start by measuring and marking each side of the mirror equally to square it off. Using your marker and glass cutting tool, begin cutting down the marked lines. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

hether or not Prosecco popsicles sounds familiar, it all began with POPS. It was launched in June 2014

by two old school friends, James and Harry, who saw

a gap in the market for a contemporary, unique and

fun concept. With a vision to incorporate the nostalgia

of a popsicle with the luxury attributes associated with

Champagne, the world’s first Champagne ice popsicle, CLASSIC, was born. Not stopping there, in April 2015, POPS introduced new products like BELLINI and MOSCOW MULE. Being such a hit everyone wanted these frozen treats. However, for us in the States, they were difficult to come by. Luckily, this summer season, Prosecco popsicles are now available in the United States and people are taking advantage of it. An example of one of these companies is FrutaPops. They have a wide variety of different alcohol choices and flavor combinations that would be great for any friend’s day out. However, they are not the most frugal of party supplies. An example would be if you wanted to purchase a twelve pack of Sparkling Prosecco POPs that would cost you $60. If you want to experience the buzz of these flavorful party starters, without making your wallet cry, you can always make your own. You may not have the fancy push pop wrapping, but you will have all the tasty fun that you can personally customize. Here are some recipes that you can try out for your next get together:

Classic Prosecco Pops Ingredients: 2 1/2 cups fresh chopped fruit (such as: mango, pineapple, strawberries, watermelon, etc.) 1/2 cups simple syrup 1/2 cup Prosecco (or any other of your favorite sparkling wines) Juice one lime/lemon (optional) Steps: 1. Pulse fruits of choice in a blender or food processor until pureed and juice-like, about one minute. 2. Combine fruit mixture, simple syrup, Prosecco, and citrus juice with a whisk in a medium bowl. Let stand until bubbles from Prosecco subside. 3. Pour mixture evenly into popsicle molds. Insert an ice pop stick into each mold. Freeze for eight hours or overnight.

ou may have passed by a time or two, but never recognized the significance

of the cream-colored mansion in Kern Place. Built in 1917, the Hoover House—

the stately residence on Cincinnati Avenue—is steeped in University of Texas at El Paso history and legend, and it’s celebrating its 100th birthday this year.

Named after the family that donated it to the university, the mansion has been home to five UTEP presidents, including the current resident, Diana Natalicio, who is the longestserving president in UTEP’s history. “For me, it’s far bigger and more elegant than any house I expected to live in when I was growing up,” said President Natalicio. “It is a truly beautiful residence and I am so fortunate to have had an opportunity to live here.”

The property is located at 711 Cincinnati, just a short distance from the UTEP campus. While the Kern area is popular and populated today, black and white photos illustrate that wasn’t always the case. “Kern Place was not filled with green grass and leafy trees as it is now. It was a desert mesa like most of the surrounding terrain in this region. As the city moved up the mountain from the Rio Grande, Kern Place began to develop,” said President Natalicio. Double doors welcome guests into the grand entrance on the first floor, where you’ll walk onto the home’s beautiful hardwood floors. In the center of the dining room floors, a trapdoor that leads to storage space—a location rumored to have stored spirits during the Prohibition. A library with displays showcasing gifts to the current president, including baseball memorabilia and a sunroom—originally a covered porch—also comprise the home. Among that is a living room that features an elaborately carved fireplace mantle; a music room with its original ceramic floor tile; and the kitchen. The mansion’s second level serves as the living quarters for Natalicio, who moved into the home in 1988. “We have some original photographs of both the interior and exterior of the house, and it is easy to see that today’s house is basically the same as it was then. We are always very respectful of the historic nature of the property, so we don’t do a lot of remodeling or restructuring,” explained Natalicio. “We’ve tried to leave it pretty much intact.” Minor changes made include additional windows for light and upgrades in the kitchen to accommodate catering for large events. A treat for event guests is the shaded outdoor patio area in the backyard that is accompanied by a pool. Another room to note is the home’s garage. It was originally designed to accommodate two horse stalls since horse-drawn carriages were a means of transportation at the time the house was built in 1917. Playing a dual role for UTEP, as both a residence and a center of hospitality, the Hoover House has hosted many prominent visitors, including: former Governor Ann Richards, Senator Lamar Alexander and former First Lady Laura Bush. It also serves as the setting for many celebratory and ceremonial UTEP events such as the annual Student Government Association swearing-in ceremony, to receptions recognizing faculty and staff achievements. “The Hoover House is not only a historic property but a place where university history is made,” said the president. “Each year, we welcome UTEP students, alumni, faculty, staff, friends and supporters to a variety of events held in this beautiful residence. For me, it is an honor and privilege to live in UTEP’s official home, and a great pleasure to open its doors to share so many of the university’s happiest occasions with our UTEP family and friends, as well as community members and visitors from across the world.” Long before Hoover House became an iconic fixture in Miner life, the house and UTEP already shared traces of a common history.

In 1930, five years after his death, Mrs. Frances Dudley sold the home to Rosario Campo de Fernandez Blanco and her husband Tomás F. Blanco, a wealthy brewer from Mexico. Nine years later, the Internal Revenue Service took possession of the home for nonpayment of taxes. Robert Thompson Hoover, a prominent local cotton merchant, purchased it in 1944 for $14,000. His widow, Mrs. Louisiana Hoover, donated the house to the university in 1965.

Once you have your ideas laid out, take them to B Brothers Furniture where they can help you create your new handcrafted design. Specializing in modern, industrial and rustic design, B Brothers Furniture have emerged into the El Paso scene and are ready to place their creations inside your home. B Brothers Furniture established themselves in 2014. At a young age, brothers Irvin and Sam Banuelos, were introduced to working with frames and demolition by their father who owns a construction company. After witnessing his father constructing legs for a dinning table, Irvin became interested in crafting and woodwork and decided that this was the path he wanted to take. “I loved the fact that you could take a rough piece of wood and turn it into something beautiful. That’s what turned me to start woodworking. I wanted to make something that would catch people’s attention but also to serve a purpose,” says Irvin. Finding inspiration in the wood in itself is what makes B Brothers pieces special. Among knotty alder, maple and oak, B Brothers favorite material to use is reclaimed wood. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

“Reclaimed wood has a certain personality and character that develops over time,” Irvin explains. Although, they hold the customer’s preference, taste and choice of material above all. When compared to other craftsmen, B Brothers take pride in what they do. B Brothers take the time to better themselves and their furniture. They guarantee that their designs will last many years with no problems by using the best joinery in every piece. They also take steps to understand how wood reacts if it were to expand or contract. Irvin says patience, time and practice are the most important skills in his work. “As a woodworker, there are always new skills you can learn to better yourself. For me, it’s a never-ending process, but it’s something I really enjoy,” he says. B Brothers hope that their creations bring people together. Whether it’s having people gather at one of their dining tables or a picnic bench outside, seeing their customers happy and satisfied is what motivates them to continue their work. “El Pasoans should support local craftsmen and artist. They not only help their community, but also themselves by buying quality items that will surpass the life of many storebought products,” says Irvin. B Brothers Furniture are happy to share their creations with El Paso and are looking forward to sharing their work in your homes.

One standout feature of the city is its highly efficient and convenient public transit system (TTC), with the program consisting of subways, buses, streetcars, and dozens of bike share stations throughout the city and its outskirts. And with the city’s grid plan structure, most of your destinations are only as complicated as a couple of turns. Try picking up a Presto card upon arrival to Toronto-Pearson airport or Union Station to use at all public transit options. During early spring, visit High Park for a chance to witness the blooming cherry blossom trees. The vibrant white and pink blossoms attract tourist as well as locals to the park to capture the annual occurrence. Visit during low-density hours and enjoy a picnic with fresh foods from St. Lawrence Market, the city’s oldest market, founded in 1803. For a satisfying breakfast or Sunday brunch, travel north of old-town Toronto to St. Clair Avenue. The east-west strip is saturated with classic home-style Canadian cooking. Stop by Starving Artist and order an eggs benny on waffles for a filling and absolutely satisfying meal, and of course, don’t forget the mimosa. During the later hours, visit Ossington Avenue for a multitude of bars where the city’s diverse population gathers to simply have a good time, with drinks of course. Looking for a hassle-free itinerary? Pre-purchase a Toronto CityPASS and skip the lines to all of Toronto’s most popular spots. The pass gives you access to the CN Tower, Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada, Ontario Science Center, Casa Loma, Royal Ontario Museum and the Toronto Zoo. At $66 USD and the convenience and line-skipping privilege, the pass is a very low price to pay for an entire weekend’s

s the sun beams down on our Sun City, there is nothing more satisfying than retreating from the heat into a cool, shaded area. Whether that’s outside or in, amp up your area with a whimsical play on light and shadows through these unique panels. The company Parasoleil is the most popular creator of these panel designs. Intricately cut from copper or metal, these panels have a mesmerizing affect with their interesting patterns and designs that allow light to flow through them. Homeowners have the option to use the panels as shade for their backyards, railing for inside staircases and balconies, or as a creative way to divide up a room when privacy is needed. Don’t be alarmed by the strong El Paso winds that roll around in March or in the rainy season we experience in July—these panels are weather resistant,

Here is some inspiration on how to incorporate these unique panels with your home. As mentioned before, the El Paso heat can be exhausting. Shy away from the sun by dressing up your porch’s rooftop with these stylish panels. These whimsical patterns will cast eye-catching shadows below you and will be all the rage when hosting outdoor events and parties. If you’re looking to relax after a hard day’s work, you can also relax on your patio, sit below the rooftop and allow the night’s sky to shine through. Although large open spaces are the new trend in home design, having the option to designate a private space is always convenient. These panels, that can be designed as room dividers, are great for creating a quiet area between kitchens and living rooms when family gatherings get too rowdy. You can set up a division for a small office or reading nook without blocking any light. These panels can also be a quick fix to hiding any eye-sores or messes that you may have inside your home.
