Winter, 2017

As you turn the pages of our Winter 2017 SPACES, the photography of the winter homes is breathtaking. We showcase multiple homes in El Paso, ranging from the several thousand to multimillion dollar homes. There are always exceptional local homes that only El Paso can offer. While you are flipping through these pages, we hope that you are intrigued by striking details in these homes and find a way to incorporate them into your own home.

With our cover home, starting on page 20, you will find the “Authentically Tuscan” home with features that include authentic architecture from an Italian villa. With some of the best views of our city and breathtaking mountains, this home is also known for its precise and intricate details. Some of these details include lanterns that have come straight from Italy, as well as distinctively carved doors throughout the home (and there are no two doors alike). Talent from around the globe have come together to make sure that this home is tremendously authentic, from the hand painted walls to the custom cabinetry. Not only is this home a true Italian villa, it is also a smart house that has been designed to fit all aspects of convenience for the home owner. As always, we’ve included the trending styles this season. And trending this season is not what you might have had in mind – wallpaper. Not only is this something we might have seen in the past, it’s now a statement you can make from bright florals to geometric patterns. It’s an easy way to make a statement this season while adding a little energy to your home. Another fun trend this season are personalized coasters and you can make your own with a DIY tutorial on page 101. So flip through, get inspired, and see what you can transform your home into this season!

A

mong the seas of cookie-cutter homes, with catalogue-derived

décor and building styles, it is one’s dream to inhabit a space that wholly

represents your personality inside and out through design and comfort. In the

case of the homeowner, this dream is nothing short of a reality.

Admittedly, the home took a bit longer than anticipated to complete. “When the home

was built, it was not spared a single detail!” as explained by the homeowner “from the

fireplaces, chandeliers, wallpaper, not to mention the beautiful imported wood finishes,”

however, fine creations take time and patience to come into fruition. These design elements,

carefully and exquisitely curated for this home, can be clearly appreciated from every corner.

The dark wood finishes, a definite standout of the home’s design aesthetic, runs through the entire space at varying degrees. The first glimpse of it can be experienced from the front double doors that go up into a cornice molding that lays flush against the exposed brick, providing a

beautiful contrast between a sleek wooden finish and a rough unpolished exterior. This design choice only grows exponentially as you delve deeper through the home, from furniture such as

coffee tables, nightstands, headboards, dressers, to more integral parts of the home like entire ceilings, kitchen cabinetry and bathroom vanities.

A “simply luxurious … Spanish-style” home, it walks hand in hand with contemporary tastes and sensibilities. Skylights in the kitchen, surrounded by inlaid lighting, draw out the deeply

intricate natural patterns of the wooden ceilings and cabinets as well as provide an ideal balance of natural and artificial light. Walk into any of the bedrooms and you’ll experience a medley of visual flavors. One bedroom in particular showcases all of the major elements of the home. Walk in following the rustic, semi-glossy red stone floor tiles and watch them meet the exposed brick reminiscent of the exterior of the home; allow your eyes to follow the different brick shades up to the dark stained wood ceiling where its shutter pattern naturally brings you to the cream color wall behind you. All of these facets of the home, so masterfully pieced together, make it clear just how much effort went into making this space a truly cohesive abode. 45

bright floral and eccentric patterns, the wallpaper of this season is here to please any and every taste. To keep it out of the “grandmother spectrum, use wallpaper on an accent wall to avoid it becoming overwhelming, or use in a small bathroom to bring some interesting eye candy. A lot of designers have used landscape wallpaper as a focal point in bedrooms and fun, detailed patterns that prove too much work to be painted in living rooms and bar areas. With a quick application and easy styling, you can create a great focal point in your home. Whatever you decide, this is an easy way to have a little fun and add some attention-grabbing design and texture to your home.

Another key component in the design of the site was to design an entire shopping and/or dining experience that promotes human interaction and not so much a means to end it. “In the beginning there was a lot of conversation around how to encourage people to move across the site so it wasn’t just simply arriving, parking your car, going in to grab your coffee or dinner and coming out,” Pierce said. “We were looking at truly promoting human interaction across the site.” Also of note are the iconic upcycled shipping containers that house the businesses within the shopping center. The design, Pierce said, not only adds character, but also lends a level of accessibility that’s not too trendy. Construction of phase two of the TI:ME project has already begun. Gomez said the idea behind this part of the project is to create microoffice spaces that blend into the pre-existing fabric.

“Down TI:ME is basically an extension of TI:ME,” Gomez said. “We wanted to offer a hybrid micro office space, with young like-minded entrepreneurs, who are passionate about what they do.” Located just west of the current retail and restaurant area, Down TI:ME is a three level, 11,000 square foot mixed-use construct. Curioso and local architectural firm, Root Architects, are the design and engineering masterminds behind the project. The idea behind Down TI:ME is simple: go to work, grab a coffee or lunch, maybe get in some shopping or a drink. The concept aims to eliminate drive time and to promote maximum use of time. Pierce said the development of both concepts is very much a nod to the European model of urban design, famous for their long promenades and gathering spots that are a mecca of human interaction. “You have this idea of having to walk, [instead of drive] to your

“I recycled wood for a big door company,” he said. “I ended up taking wood home and started playing with it. I realized I could take the wood and turn it into something functional and beautiful.” Now his pieces have been commissioned and sold all over the world. Live edge furniture is also considered more environmentally friendly because more of the wood is actually used, yielding more pieces per log. Tree logs are typically cut into horizontal slabs, with significantly less waste (5—8 %) than standard wood. The appeal and beauty of live edge furniture lies in its irregularities and imperfections. The designs take cues from Mother Nature, arguably the most accomplished and creative artist and can add warmth and uniqueness to any home or office.

Emerging Artist

PATRICK GABALDON

THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

atrick Gabaldon, 30, found his passion for art three years ago during a paint and sip event at a local event. As the holidays approached, he decided to create works of art for his family to serve as Christmas gifts. With the help of social media, he fascinated the world with one piece in particular- a recreation of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” for his mother. Attracting popularity from friends and family, he launched his talent at the end of that year. His first painting—a small, yellow home with pink windows and a blue roof stood before a tall green building, a threeleveled white church and two other smaller structures beside it. Behind the buildings sat a setting sun that casted hues of purple, blue, pink and yellows through the clouds. This

THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

Seeing water stains left behind by sweating beverages on your wooden tables or other furniture can be disheartening to see and can even permanently ruin your furniture. to prevent this from here on out, here are some fun DIYs that will save your furniture and be great conversation pieces at your next get together.

T

he first coaster is simple and words of fun. All this coaster requires are some scrabble tiles, cork

squares or a roll and E6000 glue. Show off your scrabble skills by thinking of four-letter words to use on the coaster like beer, wine, teas, love, etc. Start by carefully gluing each letter down, making sure they stay aligned. This glue dries faster and is stronger than others, so keep that in mind as you work. If you’re using a cork roll, once the glue has dried, use an X-ACTO knife to cut the cork, making sure to use multiple light cuts and not a single hard-pressured cut that could break the cork. Just like that, you are done. As an optional step, you can coat the top with Mod Podge, but it’s not necessary.

he next coaster is a great way to keep track of whose drink is whose. This one will require cheap ceramic tiles and chalkboard

spray paint (which can both be found at any hardware store) black felt and a hot glue gun. Start by laying your tiles out and spray painting them with chalkboard paint; a few coats should do the job. Next, cut out felt squares in the same size of your tiles and hot glue them on, gluing the center and edges to keep the felt in place. Once dried, you won’t have to worry about losing your glass again at your next get together and guests can show off their artistic chalk skills.

T

he third DIY coaster is definitely a cute and clever idea. What you need for this one are cheap tiles, paint samples in your favorite

color scheme, spray adhesive, Mod Podge and glossy sealer. First, cut the paint chips in the same size as the tiles then attach them with spray adhesive to the top. Once the chips have dried, apply a few coats of Mod Podge to keep them together and then a coat of glossy sealer to make it shine. Just like that you, have the cutest coasters.

DIY Coasters

T

he last DIY coaster is the most colorful, but still an easy one. You will need alcohol inks, blending solutions and

cheap tiles. Cover the tiles with the alcohol blending solution then start dripping the alcohol inks on to the tiles, making sure to only use a few drops of the alcohol inks. You can let the colors mix themselves or use a cotton swab to swirl the colors around. Once dried, you can leave as is or paint the edges and add a felt piece to the bottom. These coasters are sure to brighten up any room.

Roses Are Red Blossoms Are In

Big, beautiful, vintage-looking floral fabrics are a fun trend that many designers love for the home this year. Vintage florals can fit any style because you can choose patterned pieces that are pale and classic, or vibrant and colorful to suit your home best.

Marble, Your Subtle Way to Chic From small table top Christmas trees, to coasters and candle holders, small marble accents will be found on the shelves of most home furnishing and dĂŠcor stores. Small marble accessories add effortless hints of opulence to any space.

Sparkling Gems = Visceral Happiness From gilded, to completely raw and unearthed, geodes were huge in 2016 and are making their way into the New Year this winter. Crystal stones in the home have been major for celebrities this year because they are believed to be grounding and healing depending on which stone you choose. From bookends to counter tops, bottle tops to chandeliers, this home addition truly sparkles.

THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

Copy Paste Furniture Formulaic home pieces and buyers were on the outs this year, and have yet to make nice. Designers are seeing a spike in the need for more eclectic pieces that match individual interests and come in many styles. Buyers are looking for pieces that are unique and well made, paying close attention to the details now more than ever. Imitative and standard are two words that will have shoppers running for the door this winter.

Bye Bye Colors As a lover of all colors, I am sad to say that designers are predicting a color slump this winter and into 2017. People are loving unique neutrals such as alabaster and egg shell for walls and rugs. Although this news may leave us feeling bereaved of our happy shades, vintage florals are a good way to sneak in some color this season.
