THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN
A
Editor-in-Chief s our first home and design issue of the year, let us set the tone for the amazing trends and fascinating local
homes you can gather inspiration from. We welcome 2018
with a mixture of design trends and bold styles that you can
easily implement in your own home. If the new year has brought you an itching desire to change things up, allow our pages to guide you in the right direction.
In this issue, you’ll find small, bold living spaces—like the home on our cover—and spacious, luxurious homes with views you won’t believe. The small loft that graces our cover comes packed with interesting detail and unique style. It is a home that the couple have carefully curated with big city style. You don’t want to miss it. As much style that the loft has, another home we feature has the views to match. Sitting on top of the mountain, right here in the city, this spacious home has the luxury details and envious views that can be enjoyed all year long, with a pool to cool off in during the summer. We’ve also added a home from the region that you’ll enjoy. If you’d like a getaway to the fresh mountain air of Ruidoso, this house is perfect. It was designed to completely compliment the weather, city style and views of the Sierra Blanca Mountains. The winter months have a lot of color this year—think royal jewel-toned colors. It also brings a cool hidden gem to El Paso. Tres Toros Leather Company, located in downtown, has the locally-crafted leather goods you will want to have your hands on. They have purses for women, wallets for men and other rustic leather goods. If you’ve had a desire to travel this year, allow us to introduce to you the travel bookstores around the world. Each with interesting design and miles of travel information, you might think about visiting more than one. Flip through the pages and become excited to start this new year with us as we celebrate the local design style of El Paso and trends to bring into your own home.

become much more than that—it has transformed into not only a refuge, but a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of Steven Roberts and Andrew Taylor. “We’ve never seen anyone do something like this to the space,” said Steven, quoting the building owners’ comments about their overhauling of the design of their home. The entire home appears instantly through the loft’s door. The kitchen’s island built by the homeowners is only a sample of the highly personalized touches that decorate the home completely throughout. “Kate” the lioness, a recycled metal sculpture created by UK artist Peter Grieve (a favorite of the homeowners), greets guests that walk through the door, “That was the first important piece that we bought together,” said Steven. The open concept of the place not only adds to the charm of the space, but is necessary in order to avoid a constrained feel that would occur if each room was separated as is common with larger homes. The space, akin to something that can be found on someone’s inspiration board, serves as a model for those looking to live small without giving up their sense of style. “Living small is great, it teaches you something about yourself. People feel like they need big houses and I think people should live in what really fits them,” said Steven. Despite being technically small, the home does not lack a sense of space,

as it is outfitted with an impressive garage door-style window that raises to allow fresh air in as well as a unique view of downtown El Paso. Throughout the home, the eclectic style of the homeowners is evident. The foliage is distributed smartly, contrasting with the concrete elements of the living area and the exposed brick wall, all of which is accented with the pops of color from the art that the homeowners have collected. In order to compensate for the limited amount of storage space, the homeowners’ creativity led them to go with the rugged look of locker-style storage for the bedroom and closet areas. “There’s a sort of industrial feel to living in a loft,” said Steven. Of the art and décor in their home, Andrew added, “I’m not going to buy something just to fill a space, I’m going to buy something that I love and that makes me happy and I want to see every day of my life.” Of the process of putting together their home and how they continue to build within it, the homeowners spoke about not wanting to have a designer or decorator involved. To the homeowners, the importance of being able to recognize and attach a memory to each piece in the home is valuable, as well as putting together a functional space that fits each of their needs. “I want to be surrounded by a home that makes me feel good and really personal to me,” said Steven. “When I walk around the house and people ask me about things, I know exactly where I got that, why I own it.” Filled to the brim with the experiences and personality, the loft has taken on an entirely new disposition, one that wholly represents exactly what a home is supposed to be, an accurate representation of the homeowners. Regarding his feelings about the home, Andrew says, “There’s nothing better than walking through the door to a place that you www.thecitymagazineelp.com
helped create and want to be in.”

hat do you get when you combine a stunning view, high wood ceilings and 4,700
square feet of meticulous workmanship? A beautiful home on Rocky Pointe Drive. One of the first things I see as I drive up to this home is an inviting swimming pool. The pool overlooks West El Paso and I can only imagine what a dip would be like at sunset on a hot summer day. Entering the home feels like a breath of fresh mountain air. The high, planked wood ceilings take me back to skiing days in Telluride. The contrasting stone detail adds a luster of richness to the home and makes it feel warm, rustic, grounded, yet elegant. While walking through the house with builder, Rafael Molina, he explains that the views are unmatched in all of El Paso. He says that before the home was built, neighbors would come prop their chairs on the site just to watch the amazing sunset. We go up and down a couple sets of small stairs and he tells me about the incredible planning that went into making this floor plan work on this particular slope. Was it worth it? When you see the sunset, city views and the layout of the house the only answer that comes to mind is “duh,” absolutely! It was worth all the time that went into planning. As we step out onto the terrace, there is a huge grill situated amongst a full outdoor kitchen. How easy, not to mention amazing, would it be to just leave the doors open in the summer and live outside? This is just one of the most loved aspects of this home—the flawless flow that can exist between indoor and outdoor living. All of the stone arches are stained concrete, with stone veneer detail on the lower half, which only continues this home’s love affair with the Colorado mountain chalet style. The indoor kitchen is also swoon-worthy. Every single appliance is commercial

Also noteworthy is the deck. Though it seems that it is on a second floor, it is level to the home, built on the mountain in which the home sits on. With accordion windows from the kitchen, the deck is a seamless extension of the home. Again, the views are key in this area. The large deck is great for entertaining, with options of grilling or taking a quick step inside to access the full kitchen. It is also the ideal spot to spend time alone, look out into nature and take a moment to breathe. Though the home is spread out and large, it is more intimate than it seems. The open floor plan allows for the family to gather without walls creating boundaries or obstructing views. The five rooms also allow for guests to stay, bringing more people in for a “the more the merrier” atmosphere. Which, when you’re living and hanging out in Ruidoso, is the perfect atmosphere to surround yourself in. When you’re already surrounded by beautiful nature, this home is a relaxing setting with windows into the outside that, with just a bit of imagination, could make you feel like you’re extreme glamping.

The Perfect Mix! | By: WAYNE HILTON |
ith the fall markets behind us, and the anticipation of what designers and manufacturers will be touting as on-trend for the coming year, 2018 promises to show a mix of both understated elegance and over-the-top style. We will see pops of saturated color, surprises in textiles and wallcoverings and a continuation of the industry drawing inspiration from both nature and global sources. After seeing hundreds of market influences and designer forcasts at the end-of-year markets, one in particular stood out to me: METAL! Metal in dĂŠcor is that neutral accent that runs the gamut of finish possibilities.Whether your taste gravitates towards the warmth of gold, copper and brass, or the reflective coolness of chrome, silver and platinum, the effective use of metal always adds polish. From furniture to accessories, frames to drawer pulls, lighting and lamps, wall coverings and fabrics, metallic finishes have shifted from being exclusively a catapult to the glam side of dĂŠcor, to a staple in a wide variety of styles and applications. 54

Though metal in design has been largely touted as a contemporary element, it has been used for centuries.A visit to your local antiques market will undoubtedly confirm that metallic pieces in decor have been on-trend for decades, even centuries.Current applications are embracing elements of aged patina, ornate detailing and gilded focal points, including mirrors, frames, accessories and accent pieces.

As the popularity of using gold as a staple in the design world continues, 2018 celebrates this classic finish by infusing spaces with elements such as lamps, nesting tables, shelving and one-of-a-kind decorative accents.Since metallics, particularly gold, are considered neutrals in the design palette, these elements can be worked into any color scheme.

Though the design limelight has fallen strongly on gold for the last several years, especially rose gold in 2017, chrome and other silver finishes continue to hold their own in appeal and use.The classic sheen of those sleek, metallic, mirror-like finishes are difficult, if not impossible to ignore.Silver is a great stand-alone design material, but also plays well with other materials such as glass and wood. Though chrome is a contemporary design element, it can absolutely work in a traditional or even classically inspired

We saw a tremendous momentum in the use of brass in decor starting in 2016, and forging ahead through most of last year.As a decor front runner, brass was featured as a stand-alone material in both lighting and accessories.Because of the similarities in sheen, and its natural, earthy tones, brass elements are a snap to pair up.Looking towards 2018, brass has taken a courteous step to the side. However, it is still a strong team player in the “mixability” of combining metals.

Coziness, intended imperfection and the collected-over-time look are all major players as we move into 2018—and this goes for the use of metals in dÊcor as well.Combining different shades or patinas of a single metal is a tried and true method, such as a burnished or dark gold light fixture paired with polished gold accessories.Another way to emphasize casual comfort over formal or stuffy looks, is mixing metal varieties as well as finishes. This mix, despite the differences in finishes, still looks cohesive and feels intentionally collected.

EASY DOES IT
As with all decorative finishes, generally, a little bit goes a long way.Metal is no different. If you are easing into this finish trend, start small and build.Begin with accents and accessories, and feel your way into larger pieces, such as furniture and large scale objects.Even subtle choices such as picture frames and drawer pulls can be a stepping stone towards committing to using metal in your personal space. Once you get the rhythm of how metal can truly be a fabulous (and fun) addition to your design style, GO FOR IT!As always, trends are just that, a trend.Look to them for inspiration, learn from what the professionals are doing, but as I tell all of my clients, MAKE IT YOUR OWN!Create a space that reflects YOU and be fearless as you discover your style. Here’s to a year of shining successes—in décor and life!

arenthood is an incredible journey and
right of passage that many of us go
though. It is in many ways a trail of our
patience, endurance, time management and
our ability to prevail though sleep deprivation. The first year, although difficult, is such a
celebration. It is a miraculous experience filled with
so many milestones for both you and baby. From first steps, to first words, every precious moment is filled with excitement, nervousness and countless social media albums full of photos. Going through parenthood for the first time is a mixture of emotions. It can be every bit joyous and exciting but also equally as terrifying. As a new parent you are constantly being pushed in many different directions on how to raise your baby. You are bombarded by books, articles, and endless advice from people you know and, strangely enough, even people you don’t know. From your parents to cousins and, random people in the grocery store their advice although full of love, can in many ways can stress you out beyond all measure. You begin to question if you are doing the right things to raise your child correctly. You compare, you look up growth charts, you analyze and begin to baby proof. The list is endless of your worries and at the end of the day, all you can is your best, all you can give is your love, and in the end all you can hope for is the best. Since the first year is most often the most difficult, many parents celebrate along with their child on their first birthday. So if you are a parent with a baby this year and have made it to your child’s first birthday give yourself a pat on the back, a hi-five, and pop some champagne! You did it! You kept a baby alive for a whole year and survived infancy. You can now celebrate and join parents all over the world as they celebrate their child’s first birthday with a SMASH, a cake smash! A cake smash is a messy, fun and down right dirty right of passage for every one year old. This fun and messy milestone is gaining popularity and being celebrated by both parent and child all over the world. To kick the celebration newly one olds are served cakes to destroy. Many times in front of friends in family often tasting cake and real sugar for the first time. The photos priceless, and down right hilarious.

Anti-Décor Is a Thing www.thecitymagazineelp.com
One of the most important things to remember when you’re decorating like a French designer is that things should look natural. Don’t try to match everything. A leather rug can lay under a colorful Mexican-style armchair, you can have a wall gallery that incorporates different centuries and you can definitely juxtapose other items that you thought shouldn’t be together to create something that looks interesting and natural. Very French. 67

Stay Away from Natural Colors Sure, the French are known to have chic allwhite rooms, but what really stands out in French décor is their use of bright colors. There are no rules when it comes to incorporating— nothing is too bright or off limits—so long as you use complimentary colors to tie the whole style together.

Consider the French Lifestyle The French are able to maintain an effortless look because they design their spaces to accommodate their lifestyle and daily flow of things. From the furniture to the overall aesthetics—everything has a function, even if it doesn’t look relaxing. Create nooks for your mementos and books, pick furniture that you’ll use and, most importantly, surround your space with things that emulate your style.

Reuse and Recycle Go to estate sales, ask your grandma for some family heirlooms or shop thrift stores. Piecing together the new and old is tres chic and tres French (are we all speaking French yet?). French designers love history, and they make sure to respect it. So, add some pieces to your home that may have been owned by someone else. Again, juxtapose them with new items for a good mix and that aforementioned effortless look.

and chooses to create trendy leather purse designs with accessories like; wallets, necklaces, bracelets and key chains. Each piece is handmade with 100 percent leather, unlike some of the widely-known purse brands, which often use plastic in their designs. Ofelia does the tooling on all of her merchandise. She makes the pattern, cuts out the design, wets the leather with a “special spray” and tap-by-tap hammers the designs into the bags. “We start with accessories that range from $10, and our bags start at $30. Our most expensive in store right now is 80,” says Ofelia. Custom bags can reach up to a $300 price range, depending on the

Life and Style, as a way to force herself out of the house and explore her new city. Now a mother of two, Emily has explored El Paso with her children, creating an online presence slash following, and becoming a huge inspiration to home and design in the city. With a master’s degree in historic preservation from Savannah College of Art and Design, Emily is especially keen on old buildings—something that she expresses she loves about downtown El Paso—and is able to apply her skills and knowledge to the design world she immerses herself in. The blogger, originally from Georgia, immediately fell in love with the city. “I love the mountains and the friendly people,” she gushed. As the intro of her blog states, “As a Georgia girl, I didn’t know how I would adjust to life in the desert and I had no idea how much I would come to love it. Now, I love telling people how wonderful I find this Southwest city.” True to the positive representation of El Paso, Emily only talks about the places and things that she loves about El Paso—and there’s a lot. She has even slowly convinced the rest of her family to make the move here. “My dad lives here four out of seven days a week and hikes every day that he’s here.” She also adds, “El Paso is fun, growing and wonderfully safe.” On her blog, you can find a variety of content about El Paso. She keeps her audience up to date about the different things to do and eat around the city. The “Life” and “Style” sections of her blog act as a way to discuss and share everything that she loves, keeping everything local. 76

This is a book-lovers heaven. Readily rivaling Daunt Books for the title of Best Travel Bookstore in the World, Stanford’s, also in London, was established in 1853 by Edward Stanford. It’s called its current Long Acre shop home since 1901, and celebrated its 150th birthday in 2003. As the world’s largest map retailer—founder Edward Stanford was Cartographer to King Edward VII—Stanford’s stocks thousands of maps from around the world, along with globes, world literature selections and just about anything travel-related. Among its famous clientele is Dr. Watson, who traveled to Stanford’s at Sherlock Holmes’ request in “Hound of the Baskervilles.” Not sure yet? Even the floors at Stanford’s are maps. With locations in Barcelona and Madrid, Spain’s Bookstore, Altaïr, stocks more than 60,000 maps, references, travelogues, guidebooks and European-focused travel literature in Spanish, Catalan and a dozen other languages. Since 1979, Altaïr has strived to be “a cultural space, a meeting place, an exchange of ideas, a connection between travelers, the elaboration of projects and, increasingly, a space for cultural activities linked to the fact of traveling.” www.thecitymagazineelp.com

London While several of the world’s top travel bookstores are abroad, there are still plenty stateside, with no better place to start than the Big Apple. Since opening in 2008 in Manhattan and in Brooklyn in 2012, New York City’s Idlewild Books has gained a fast following as one of the best travel bookstores in the world. Specializing in travel literature and guidebooks (all sold for 10 percent off), Idlewild—the original name for New York International Airport—also stocks books in a variety of languages. Both Idlewild stores also offer ongoing classes in Spanish, French, German, Italian and other languages to get travelers ready to converse wherever they may land. When the famed Globe Corner Bookstore in Cambridge, Massachusetts closed its doors in 2011 after nearly 30 years, Brookline Booksmith snapped up its stock. Booksmith’s Globe Corner Annex, sells travel guidebooks, travel literature, maps, travel accessories and more from its shop outside Boston. Westward, ho!

In addition to a large selection of travel books, Changes in Latitude also sells packs, suitcases, accessories and travel clothing, along with gifts and gadgets from all over the globe. In 1989, Distant Lands opened its doors in Pasadena, California as a travel-only bookstore and passion-project of lifelong travel hound, Adrian Kalvinskas. Since then, the store’s inventory has quadrupled and now includes much more than the maps and guidebooks that made it famous with travel gear, clothing and accessories, luggage and even its own travel agency, anything the world traveler could need can be found under Distant Lands Travel Bookstore and Outfitters’ roof. FOYERS and ENTRYWAY
W
hen entering into a home or business, first impressions are everything, and can set the tone for how your visit will go. Upon entering, there should be a strong inviting sense
to come in and feel welcome. The main entrance is the transition from the outer into the inner world, and should be uplifting as it is considered the “mouth” or “Kou” of the home, and feeds the energy inside for its occupants. Our dwellings have many different types of entrances—some are wide open while others may have a wall as soon as you enter. While the styles may differ, it is still the most public section of the home and not an ideal space to place personal items like family photos or religious deities as these items are more ideal placed in private areas.

So what can you place in the entryway? Hung artwork with a simple table and flowers will give the most inviting first impression. If you are limited on space, consider hanging small shallow wall shelves with decorative items. Mirrors are also a common decorating tool to make spaces feel larger. Placing a mirror in the foyer is a great way to invite in chi, but make sure the mirror is not placed directly across from the front door as it sends the chi right back out. There should be plenty of lighting to provide positive energy upon entering. If natural light is an issue and the space is dark or dim, choose a light paint color to open things up. Using a light fixture that gives off the best light possible or placing sconces on the wall is also helpful. Keep this area clutter free and unobstructed as you want the energy to flow. You can organize by using a console table with drawers, coat hooks or tree stands. Avoid keeping items like shoes nearby on the floor, or using the table as a catch-all for mail or magazines, as this slows the chi. Representing all five of the elements of water, fire, earth, metal and wood in your entryway creates a sense of peace and wellbeing for your guests. For example, water is represented by crystals and mirrors, while candles and lighting will be a nod to the fire element. Items made of brass, copper or steel represent metal and are easily done with the use of photo frames or candle sticks. Ceramics and artwork depicting landscapes are the earth element. Finally, for the wood element, it can be wooden furniture and accessories, including beams and pedestals. The last thing to consider for your entryway is the staircase. If your home has a staircase near the entryway, it can impact the chi. Stairs can push the existing chi away, creating a powerful waterfall effect by pushing away good health and fortune for the inhabitants. Remedy this by creating some sort of barrier between the door and stairs. Placing a mirror on the wall facing the stairs, using up-lighting or simply placing a live green plant at the base of the staircase will slow this energy down.

Pumpkin Spice Roulade P

umpkin isn’t just for October. It’s a flavor component that stretches over the entire holiday season. Use it, and use it generously. No one will be upset that it shows some face at your next holiday party, especially this recipe. This dense moist rolled cake filled with spiced cream cheese frosting is ideal for a dessert that’s not too complicated but will turn heads the second you walk through the door. Don’t be intimidated by the visual of the rolled cake, because with a few simple baking techniques, this can go from the oven to your table in about an hour!

DIY Edition | By: JANENE ROJAS |
Pillow Party A really beautiful idea to spruce up any bedroom is DIY pillow stamps made from fresh leaves, lemons, flower petals, feathers—anything! All you need is fabric paint, a white or light colored pillow and your stamp object of choice. Paint your pick, stamp it on your pillowcase and voila, you have a new trendy pillow. Don’t forget to give it a day to dry. And if you do choose leaves, they must be fresh and flexible. Dried leaves will give you a big mess if you try to paint and press them.
DIY Blanket Ladder This all started recently in my search for a towel ladder for my restroom. I couldn’t seem to find anything for under $100, which is just not ideal for anyone on a budget. Lucky enough, there are many “Under $10 Blanket Ladder DIY” posts on Pinterest lately that look like they’re better quality than the store bought ones. First purchase is lumber, which you can find for less than $5. Then, you’ll need to cut two pieces of wood into five-foot legs, then cut another four pieces where your blankets will hang. Get handy with screws or nails and you are done with the easiest new addition to your space. You can also stain the ladder to match your home. $100 or $5, you decide.
Welcome Sign with Wi-Fi password “Millennials Now Welcome Guests With Avocado Toast and Wi-Fi Password.” I can already see the headlines—but it won’t stop me from saying that this is a really cool trend! All you need is your Wi-Fi network and password, any frame you like and a printer. Type out the info, decorate with a simple design that you can find on Microsoft Word, or any website you choose to design on, and print. Place the paper in your frame to give your guests what people love most—free Internet. Not a graphic designer? There are free downloadable templates all over the web for this now, which makes it easy to type your info and print. Super easy and awesome.

Words On Stairs
In the world of Pinterest, I’ve spotted a lot of this new trend of putting stair decals or painted words on sides of stairs. It looks like it’s “In” if it’s making the space more of a reflection of yourself and family, but I am personally saying that it’s out because it falls into a “live, laugh, love” category for me. The quotes being used (from what I’m seeing) are generic, and your family is not. But adding your own unique twist to this trend, you could definitely make it an “In”.
Are Mason Jars Finally out? I guess after the explosive fad of using a mason jar for everything from overnight oats to decorative lanterns, I may or may not be completely exhausted of DIY mason jar tutorials. But I also may or may not have a metallic pink mason jar as my favorite liquid soap dispenser at home. Let’s just say I’m conflicted.
Rustic Living Stay away from the “rustic” décor ideas that you see around. Anything with stained wooden crates that are turned into shelves or storage for your mason jars is now something you want to stay away from. The rustic look has expired. Instead, think of softer textures with light and airy colors to make your home www.thecitymagazineelp.com
more inviting and relaxing.
