Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.” - Scott Adams
Editor-in-chief
M
agazines have such an opportunity every month to knock you on your
“nalgas.” The impact of a cover, such as Vanity Fair’s recent cover of
Caitlyn Jenner (some of you may still call her Bruce), became a viral
sensation and proved that magazines still hold an important place in our media landscape. Ironic that of all the media we have available, Jenner
chose a magazine to release both her story and first pictures. What other medium could have created the same lasting effect? It’s always difficult to tell how readers will ultimately react to a cover. I’ve had less than nice emails and some controversial phone calls, but the one I’ll never forget is when I received pages, too many to count, delivered to my office of why a particular El Pasoan should not have made the cover. That was also my favorite cover – the one that got all the attention, the one that sold amazingly on newsstands. What this shows us is that the print world is very powerful and the magazine cover is our canvas. It’s appropriate that we talk about canvases as this month marks our art issue. Our August cover is actually a painting by local artist Nick Baida and showcases downtown El Paso. His choice of paint, acrylic and his choice of canvas, wood. Art is a silent voice to many of us; it has a way of softly speaking. If I were an artist I would mimic one of my favorite Van Gough pieces titled “Two White Butterflies” because it speaks of the beauty of transformation. The metamorphosis of the caterpillar into a butterfly is symbolic. Art is important to any community, and studies show that students involved in the arts are less likely to be truant or get into trouble and do better at standardized testing. This month, I encourage you to take a walk in our beautiful sunshine enjoying the city’s outdoor art, take a tour through the art museum, encourage your children to grow their artistic talent, and when choosing art for your home or office, take the opportunity to experience and support our local artists with a new appreciation. The City Magazine takes a strong stand on showcasing local talent and supporting local businesses. This month our special profile section showcases locally owned businesses that help to sustain El Paso. Take a minute to read their stories and let them know you’ve read about them when you walk into their businesses. Shopping local sustains us all. Enjoy El Paso’s Art,

An Interview With A Local Business Woman | By: NEISSHA KING |
Valerie Steinberg Owner, Apparel Art Apparel Art – Starting Over…
Apparel Art, founded by two brothers, opened its doors in 1987. By 1991, after being a stay-at-home mom for several years, Valerie Steinberg (the daughter of one of the founding partners) found herself divorced and with the responsibility of providing for her two young children. With the support of her parents, she moved back to El Paso to join the family business. After working in the business for over 15 years, she became the sole owner. Q Were your intentions ever to be a part of the family business? A No, I had moved away, married, kids and then life happened. Being out of the workforce, I felt my skills were limited as to what I could offer. I believed joining the family business was my only option. I encourage women to always work on themselves. Position yourself to have options. You can always start over, you can make it. Q What advice would you share regarding working with family? A Recognize personality differences, and allow the other individuals to grow. Have open lines of communication, trust, and clearly defined roles of operation. Teach others and allow them to learn how to run a business as oppose to simply working in the business. My father allowed me to do my job without being controlling. He was an outstanding mentor and cultivated the business woman I am today. Q What are some of the pros and cons of owning a business? A Having your own business allows you to create your own destiny. Yet, you don’t truly work for yourself, you work for your customers. You’re always focused on the well-being of the business, there is truly never a day off. Q Words of wisdom regarding business? A Cashflow, cashflow, cashflow (need she say more) and credit. Protect your credit as much as possible. Without it, you will never succeed. Your reputation is vital, word of mouth is key. Be consistent for your customers … location, hours, contact information, etc. Lastly, you owe it to yourself to step out and see what’s possible … you can do it. The Legacy She Desires to Leave Behind: 12

August, 2015 Mistu Overstreet, an El Paso native with a degree from the California College of the Arts in Oakland/San Francisco, has forever changed the commute through the El Paso International Airport with his “River Spirit,” a 10,000 square foot terrazzo public art instillation. New Mexico artist Greg Reiche designed the “Firebird,” an engaging and dynamic sculpture in front of a firehouse which is made from over two tons of steel and 1000 individual pieces of kinetic glass. Los Angeles based, and the Coachella favorite, Poetic Kinetics is an artist collective which designed the Aztec Calendar Pavilion, a power generating shade structure at 605 North Santa Fe Street. artist Sebastian, a 45-foot sculpture which represents the El Paso desert downpours that the city occasionally experiences. El Paso has been at the forefront of incorporating the best artists from all reaches of life in order to beautify the cityscape. Reaching out to the international stage of the art community places El Paso at the forefront of cities growing through the use of cultural development which is important to many facets of the quality of life for residents. Long gone are the days when the most beautiful structures in El Paso were only found downtown and the expanding city submitted to the whims of industrious corporations. The beauty in the City of El Paso can now be seen across all parts of town at all times of day forever. Forever is a beautiful notion if one really sits and thinks about it. His work “SPIN (orange) 2009,” is a rotating screenprint on linen. Even without being able to experience the rotational element, the piece is powerful and fun. Mr. Ramirez currently resides in New York, and has had his work exhibited all over the world. August, 2015 to his most beloved costumers. “El Gambusino means searcher, a searcher in nature,” says Leal. The Mexican artist acknowledges a fact that has disconnected many of us from what earth has given us. “As human beings we have lost the power of nature and instead people are now bombarded by cybernetic images,” said Leal. Many ask him how long it takes to make
one of these, but he knows some can take a lifetime and some can take a few minutes, but they cannot be compared to the trillion of images easily downloaded from the Internet. Leal knows each and every leaf is unique and he makes them different from each other when he expresses himself through them. “We are now destroying what gave us life. My parents and my grandparents respected nature and unfortunately it is now being destroyed to acquire a gram of gold. The leaves I make send a message to start doing something good for nature again,” said Leal. 44
www.thecitymagazineelp.com
August, 2015 He collects his leaves from a tropical tree called Tampinzerano found only in Las Barrancas del Cobre, a group of six canyons located northeast of Chihuahua, which has become a popular attraction over the years. The Sierra Madre Occidental is where a particular culture to Chihuahua still lives after so many years; the Tarahumaras. They call themselves Raramuri, which means “the one with light feet” because they are faithful to their most ancient tradition, to run. Leal is planning to develop a project to benefit the cultivation and products of the amaranth with an organization by the name of Korima Con Alegria, which translates to “share with joy.” The organization also dedicates itself to reinforcing the rights the Tarahumaras must have. Leal will be giving away his most precious creations, even the ones he has kept for decades, all for the

Tarahumara community. “To me, this is a kind of ‘thank you’ to the Tarahumaras, a way of giving back,” said Leal. People are now obsessed with what the

Internet has to offer, even tiny toddlers want to play with smartphones, and the fact that five years ago they would have rather go out and play instead of laying on the couch all day staring at a screen can be quite scary. Gambusino’s philosophy tells us to enjoy and love the gift that earth has given us, as simple as that. “The secret is to know the structure of the leaf, just like the worm knows. Human beings can invent such high technology but they can never replace the essence of what nature can create,” said Leal. People ask him how long these pieces last and, between joke and reality, he tells them around 500 years. “The Egyptians learned how to preserve papyrus and the Chinese have kept Bamboo and Xuan paper for centuries. You do not let a precious diamond fall,” said Leal who still keeps leaves from his childhood in perfect state. El Gambusino’s next exhibition will be in California this coming September, but he always remembers to stay humble because what matters to him is “doing what I love to do most.”

aw talent is continuously developed over time. Artists train for years in order to refine their craft and develop style. Nick Baida grew up with the natural flame of creativity ruminating in his soul. That initial
talent combined with practice in precision has pushed Baida to the forefront of developing artists in El Paso. Youth proves to be Baida’s source of energy, proficiency, and inspiration. Upon meeting Nick for the first time one realizes that his strong personality quickly wades in the pool of the subconscious, dripping to the very center of the heart. Baida is charming and daring. He isn’t afraid to have his own opinions or identity yet is very careful not to strike the wrong chord with those he meets. Although Baida sports a sophisticated goatee, one quickly recognizes Baida’s age, but doesn’t discount him or his age to any fault.

he road to success for any independent band is paved with countless shows at local clubs; hundreds of hours of songwriting work and practice; extensive touring; and mitigating professional, creative, and family lives. After two years of trekking down this highway, Great Shapes have completed one full-length tour, four regional tours and recently recorded their EP “Murmuration” with Justin Leeah of Sound+Vision Studios. They also recently made the College Music Journal’s list of the 25 most added new bands on college radio stations across the US.
Band members Evan Tremper (drums), Neil Henry (vox, guitars), and George Rodriguez (bass) and I sat down before they had to run to a gig – opening for Weezer at the Downtown Street Fest. They shared with me the struggles and satisfactions of the creative process, recent successes, and the challenges of self-representation in the new music economy. Q: How did you guys meet? NEIL: I met George on Craigslist through this other guy. We formed a band for a short period of time. I met Evan through sneaking into Lowbrow for the Killer’s show. EVAN: I was holding, like, three tall boys, standing at the front of the stage, and Neil asked if he could buy one off-of me. That started the conversation. Q: Go ahead and tell everybody what your day jobs are, because most musicians have day jobs. Evan, you’re doing representation, right? EVAN: Right now I’m a freelance booker, and I’m a bar-back at the Gray Dog. GEORGE: I’m a nurse. I work at the VA. I work in mental health. NEIL: I also work for the VA as a receptionist. Q: Who is writing, who is arranging, and who is the lyricist; or is it all collaborative? EVAN: The arrangement – I think that every song we’ve ever arranged has been the three of us together. But Neil’s the lead lyricist.

August, 2015 Along with oddities and curiosities to peruse and purchase, Dreadful Things is also home to an art gallery. Adorning the walls are some of Salgado’s own creations, which have been painted in the illustrative realism style. Additionally, customers can enjoy works by other local and national artists. “It’s a beautiful collection of minds, talent, heart, and soul,” Salgado said. Dreadful Things definitely caters to a demographic with more eccentric artistic appetites. Although, Salgado says, even people who are more conservative can find something they like. Indeed, there are innumerable trinkets and treasures to choose from. Salgado also has regular art and themed shows. Local artists can showcase their work at the gallery, thereby garnering some recognition. The space serves as a venue where people can display their efforts, as well as gather to engage in a creative melding of like minds. Additionally, this particular location serves as an alternative to a fine arts museum, as some of the pieces are not your garden-variety works of art. “We’ve had great success with our shows, bringing in as many as 500 people and providing themed art work from local artists, as well as themed entertainment from dancers, musicians, and other entertainers,” she said. Past shows include solo artist showcases, sideshow entertainment events, and Augment El Paso, a truly unique experience that allows participants to scan an image with their smartphone and view and interact with them from different angles. Salgado is planning another Augment El Paso show, with the promise that “it will blow your mind.” Dreadful Things also includes a free community library with books donated from the non-profit Books are Gems, as well as gifts from people in the community. Customers are encouraged to drop in to exchange some of their old books for new ones. Salgado offers one free book per child and adult. | By: JOANN WARDY |
Too bad that we have become so lax and inconsiderate when it comes to responding when invited to a dinner party, formal occasion or a charitable event. R.S.V.P. at the lower left hand corner of an invitation stands for “respondez sil vous plait” which translated means “the favor of a reply is requested.” It is very frustrating when you are hosting an event and you don’t know how many guests will be attending. Seating needs to be arranged and food must be ordered. Next time you receive an invitation that has an R.S.V.P. do so ASAP in writing on nice stationery or on the enclosed response card or by phone when a number is included.

or a sick child, a hospital bed can be scary and lonely. Before her diagnosis, Alia was full of energy from the moment she woke up until her head rested on her pillow. When she turned 5-years-old she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma – cancer of the bone – after a fall when playing outside with her little brother.
The doctor gave Alia’s family the news that forever impacted their lives. Despite the diagnosis, Alia remained a girl full of joy and strength, said her mother. “She was determined to beat cancer,” said Maria Elena in Spanish. On June 26, the Make-A-Wish® North El Paso Regional Office helped Alia and her family celebrate her strength and courage with the granting of her wish: a “Frozen”themed party with gifts. Make-A-Wish’s mission is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Majority of wishes fall into four categories – “I wish to go;” “I wish to be;” “I wish to meet” and “I wish to have.” As an extra special gift, Alia was surprised with her two favorite princesses Anna and Elsa from the movie “Frozen.” When she saw them, her whole mood changed – she was just another girl. Casa Ford Lincoln Nissan also provided clothing and other presents. But according to the party attendees, the true gift was in being able to participate. “We are grateful to be a part of MakeA-Wish in helping these children,” said Miles Lowenfield, director of charitable operations. “We pray for their healing, their life and for blessing upon all we touch with Make-A-Wish. We feel grateful and blessed to be a part of it.” After opening all her magical gifts the princesses sang with Alia “Let it Go,” “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” and “Love is an Open Door.” Alia sang with so much joy as if she was just another girl on the playground, said Maria Elena. “Moments like this makes me have hope for Alia and the battles we will face,” she said. A year of fighting cancer means constant pain from chemotherapy and radiation, but Make-A-Wish gave Alia something to look forward to, said Maria Elena.

“We never thought we could have the support of Make-A-Wish to help bring strength to Alia’s battle with cancer,” she said. Parents and physicians confirm that wish experiences play a unique role in the healing process. A recent Wish Impact Study found that 80 percent of health care professionals say they believe that the experience can influence wish kids’ health, and 97% of wish families observed increases in their child’s emotional health. The great cities of the world are great
for a reason: they have grounded in
themselves the spirit of our histories
and the true nature and essence of the
human spirit. Among the numerous cities
of the world the U.S’s own New York City has found a special place in the heart
of millions of travelers and residents alike. This metropolis in particular houses not only a myriad of people of all ethnicities and backgrounds, but it’s also home to some of the most esteemed

art collections of the world. From the venerated stairwells of the Guggenheim to the hallowed halls of The Met, The MoMA and more, the Big Apple is simply the crème de la crème when it comes to experiencing a true slice of culture. But this city is so much more than the spectacular museums it houses. On my first solo trip to Manhattan, a wise soul sitting next to me on my flight into La Guardia leaned over and asked me what I was doing in the city – and as we both looked out the airplane window into the glittering lights of the city, he gave me a piece of advice I have never forgotten. He told me to find the beauty of New York in the unchartered nooks and corners of the city. He challenged me to walk boldly into unmarked buildings and to seek sights that few tourists get to see. Being a young, timid girl from the south, the thought of walking into places I didn’t belong was more than intimidating. But taking my new found friend’s advice I got off that plane and walked out of the airport and into a bright yellow www.thecitymagazineelp.com

That weekend I did walk boldly into the uncharted corners of New York City. I stayed with friends in Brooklyn and together we traipsed through some of the greatest sights I have ever seen. Even before this trip, I have loved the wise words of author Henry James who recommends that we be people “upon whom nothing is lost.” And in this city, it is easy to take his advice because that’s the thing about New York; every building in every district seems to have its own history and its own story. Life breathed new through the numerous people that walk past, touch, and feel the simple vibrancy of the city that transcends brick and steel. You may not see all of this in a single visit to this great city, but you will see the brush strokes and in them, the competitive spirit that interlaces the melting pot of new ideas and inspiration. It is in those moments that we realize that a single moment, a single weekend, or even a single piece of art – all of these can add up to serious life change, a change of perspective, or even a change of heart. If you haven’t been to New York, this city: its streets, its subways, and all of the people who you meet as you explore these make up a unique abstract that is art. If you are a pursuer of things unseen, New York is calling

Every man needs a few tips in the grooming department, but like asking for directions, most are too prideful to ask. His Prerogative is the answer for all you bros on-the-go that just don’t know. These products are some of the best you can find, and sure to get you in tip top shape.
Aveda Men Pure-Formance Exfoliating Shampoo Everyone has heard of exfoliating dermal products, but when I saw this I thought, “Why didn’t I think of that?!” Got some lackluster locks? This 20 ml tube of pure goodness is about to grab the paddles and defibrillate the life back into your hair! Aveda Men Pure-Formance revitalizes your scalp by pulverizing those dead skin cells into a memory with exfoliants made of walnut shells and jojoba beads, creating a smooth, healthy scalp to the touch. If you use any kind of products in your hair, this will dissolve that buildup, giving you a smooth and healthy looking scalp. Enriched with the aroma of citrus, spearmint, lavender, vetiver and kunzea, this elegant shampoo is certainly a crowd pleaser. Available at Westend Hair Company- $28
Jack Black Intense Lip Balm SPF 25 with Black Tea & Blueberry This humectant lip balm is my new favorite! Forget those waxy sticks that will leave your lips feeling even drier than the Mojave, and pocket this instant relief that lasts. This savvy little tube lubes your lips with shea butter and avocado oil that will condition, leaving your smackers ready to pucker up. You may be asking, “Why black and green tea extract?” Those are anti-oxidants fool! If you want to protect your lips from UV-induced free radicals that treat your skin like bacon in a microwave, you’d best pack this heat. Available at Vanities- $7.50

Remington Nose & Ear Hair Trimmer with Wash Out System I have written about nose hair trimmers before, but I had to go back to that old haunt because this one is hands down the ultimate nostril clearing device you can possibly own. There are some trimmers that work pretty well, but this one is unmatched. Unlike other trimmers that pull the hair, this hygienic trimmer features ComfortTrim technology, which uses dual blades moving bidirectionally to give you the closest, but safest snip for you schnozz. It can be used in water as well, making it easy to clean in the shower or sink. Available at Walgreens- $9.99
T’eo Deodorant by Lush From another one of my favorite companies, T’eo Deodorant wards your pits of the skunk stench that accompanies bacteria by utilizing the germ fighting power of fresh green grapes. Lush puts the sexy in places you never thought possible by creating all natural deodorants that help to absorb sweat with powders, and help you smell shower fresh with Juniper berry, lemongrass and every gent’s favorite – tea tree oil. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder The sunniest days are upon us, so your eyes need to be protected in style. This summer a must have accessory are round sunglasses. If your face is heart shaped or squared face, round glasses are the way to go. House of Holland created round sunglasses with a waffle inspired frame, and frame to compliment any type of facial features.

Trail blazers Get the perfect look for the summer by acquiring a blazer with a “summery” print. If you’re brave enough and want to stand out at that wedding or formal event you can get a blazer that has vibrant colors and an interesting print. If you want to be lower key, get a blazer that has a gingham print, or subtle stripes in contrasting colors.
Cargo shorts No one needs that many pockets, plain

and simple.
Your axe deodorant is not going to cut it this summer, it is time for you to find a signature scent to wear on these hot days. Calvin Klein has Eternity Summer which is a twist on their iconic Eternity fragrance with fresh undertones of cardamom and lavender. Another good option that will disguise your sweaty and salty smell this summer is Versace’s “Eros” which is a strong but light scent with Italian lemon and mint -perfect for those sunny days.
Upgrade your suede Suede shoes are very nice, I agree, but in the summer they are not the most comfortable thing to wear. Suede tends to get very hot on your feet, and summer is the perfect time to try to wear different textured shoes. Canvas, and leather are a better option. Put your suede shoes on the shelf and wait for fall to come.

2 Tablespoons Himalayan salt
½ c. freshly squeezed lemon juice

3 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil cold pressed Directions: In a 6-8 qt. stockpot, combine chicken, water and 2 tablespoons of salt. In a large skillet, heat oil (coconut oil can handle higher heat temperatures) over medium-high heat. Add onion and cook, stirring, until translucent, about six minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside. Remove chicken from the broth, and allow the meat to cool. Strain the broth and skim the fat. (Placing the broth in the refrigerator will make it easier to skim the fat)

Once cool, remove the skin and dice the meat into large cubes, cover, and refrigerate until ready to use. Return the broth to high heat, add the rice and onion and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until the rice is cooked, about 20 minutes. Add chicken and keep on a low simmer. In a medium sized bowl, beat the eggs, lemon juice and cracked black pepper. Ladle 2 cups of hot broth into a measuring cup with a pourable spout. While whisking, slowly pour the 2 cups of broth into the egg mixture. Pour the egg mixture back into the pot with some salt to taste. Stir well to blend. Do not return to a boil. Divide among the bowls and serve immediately. Garnish with parsley.

Get the Chip Off Your Shoulder | By: KEITH JOHNSON, MD | In Greek mythology, Atlas was the primordial Titan whose punishment was to eternally hold up the celestial spheres. Literally carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders; that couldn’t possibly be good for the rotator cuff. For the weekend warriors who engage in mere mortal combat, shoulder injuries are common, and thus we share something in common with a Greek God. Depending on your sport of choice you are prone to

tightness of the posterior capsule). Contact sport athletes tend to suffer more acute traumatic injuries such as a stinger (a traction injury to the nerves of the neck), rotator cuff tears (traumatic avulsion of the ligaments off of the bone), shoulder separation (tearing of the ligaments that connect the clavicle to the acromion-leaving an ugly bump on top of the shoulder) and dislocations (when the ball/humerus forcefully exits the socket/glenoid). Weightlifters tend to injure their biceps and pectoralis tendons. And even the most minor injury can lead to adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder syndrome), a very painful condition in which the joint capsule gradually shrinks and diminishes shoulder range of motion. So, you think you have a shoulder injury?
if at all possible. If motion is impossible, that is a sure sign that you need to see a doctor. 3. TIMING IS EVERYTHING. After four months or so, permanent changes can occur that make repairing your rotator cuff much more difficult and in some cases impossible. So if pain and motion fail to improve, see a physician sooner than later. 4. WHAT IS PAST IS PROLOGUE. Borrowing from Shakespeare ... How Will Social Security Impact on Your Retirement?
| By: KEVIN O’NEILL,WEALTH ADVISOR |
Financial planners generally agree, retired people need 70 to 80% of pre-retirement earnings to get by comfortably in their retirement years. Of course this varies with an individual’s expectations for their retirement lifestyle, but for our purposes, let’s use this figure as a starting point. Let’s also establish that many folks assume Social Security benefits will represent the largest portion of their retirement income but let’s admit that in MOST cases Social Security replaces about 40% or less of pre-retirement earnings. So, it’s important to have an accurate idea of what to expect from Social Security. According to the Social Security Press
the average benefit of $1331 per month, you’ll receive $15,972 per year or 22% of $72,000.

WHEN CAN YOU COLLECT? Options range from 62 to 70. If you’re 62 and want to retire early, you’d collect 25% to 30% less per month than if you
Proud member of PDN Wealth Advisors
decide to wait until the full retirement age of 66. If you start collecting at age 63, 64 or 65, you still receive a reduced amount. This is important because once you start collecting, you are pretty much locked into that reduced amount, for the rest of your life. (There is one option to pay back monies and suspend benefits until later, within the first year only). Interestingly, if you start at age 62, it takes about 12 years before someone who waits to collect (the same benefits) until age 66, catches up and continues to surpass your monthly payment until they die. Therefore, if you’re in reasonably good health, expecting to live beyond age 78, you’ll receive more money overall, if you wait until 66 to collect. If you choose to start LATER than full retirement age, benefits increase by 8% per year. Therefore, those who decide to wait until age 70 can expect 32% more per month than at age 66. On 2015’s average monthly payment of $1331, that’s an extra $425 per month! When we factor in the rising cost of living and that most of us incur more medical expenses in our golden years, there’s a very strong argument against locking into lower monthly benefits.
