Supporters say the more representatives in Washington hear from the people who live here, the greater the chance of making Castner Range National Monument a reality. #castner4ever

LA - Kurt, can you tell me what the inspiration was for the two of you to take on the challenge of this row? How did this all come about? Kurt Schwartz (KS) - It started quite simply with John flying across the ocean. While traveling abroad he thought it might be a cool idea for us to someday row across the Atlantic. Sure enough, after doing some research, we came across the Talisker Whisky Challenge. It had everything that we wanted. The foundation also had the structure to provide the safety that would matter to us and our friends and loved ones. The connection with The Samfund got looped in afterwards. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

making this an annual event. We’re in this for the long haul though! It’s When we were researching the row it was mentioned a couple of times that more people have been into space, or climbed Mt. Everest than have rowed across the Atlantic. We knew we would be faced with severe sun burns, lots of blisters, torn up hands, salt rashes, infected sores, sharks and sleep deprivation. That’s why the TWAC is touted as the world’s toughest row. KS - We’ll be paddling 12 hours each per day. But distance-wise, there’ll also be plenty of days that we’ll actually go backwards because of the winds or lack thereof. Around 40-50 miles a day will be a good clip if we can consistently do that.

“The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.” – Walt Disney A creative genius and pioneering entrepreneur, Disney said it simply, yet powerfully. And as it happens at the onset of each and every New Year ahead, we wake with the spirit of hope and optimism for a brighter, better year than before. We contemplate all the ways in which to go about our best days ahead, resolving to improve in those areas of our lives that need it most. Enter
our ‘New Year, New You’ showcase
YOU that will not only inspire you across
the board, it will serve as a tool for those looking to making
profound and lasting changes.
And with that, let’s embark together
on a 2017 where words are just that and action is king!
Ignite Movement The word ‘ignite’ can be interpreted as a kindling of light or the setting of something ablaze, which are basically one in the same. When applying either of those meanings to one local, Lower Valley church, we find a more powerful notion of ‘igniting’ that relates to the “enlightenment” of one’s innermost self, and the joy and freedom that follow from that “illuminating” experience. Founded in 2012 by Pastors Andy and Patty Valenzuela, and through the assistance of daughters Andrea and Jaklyn, Ignite Movement Church has a mission to empower individuals in their longing for the often total transformation they seek, and in a very real and tangible way. Recently commissioned as an apostle of the church, a rare feat for female ministers, Apostle P. Valenzuela explains that in the area of self-improvement, the power to make beneficial, necessary, or even critical, changes in our lives must follow a more deeply rooted transformation. In her own compelling words, Apostle P. Valenzuela explains, “If we have the power to change our hearts, we have the power to change our lives.” And the transformations that she and the church have witnessed are literally miracles! From evidence of confirmed healings, “financial breakthroughs,” restored marriages and other countless testimonials, Ignite Movement Church is working wonders where, for many, the future seemed bleak. And for those looking for simple congregation or a place of shared, spiritual uplifting, rest assured that the experience will leave you fully ignited! Not surprisingly, its following has grown exponentially in the relatively few years that Ignite Movement has made its spiritual mark. Expanding from 200 members in 2012, to approximately 2,000 total members this year, the church saw an astounding rate of growth when it embraced as many as 1,700 followers just this year. As Apostle P. Valenzuela eloquently offers, “Our mission is to bring heaven to earth. We operate in the supernatural and bring miracles to earth,” adding, “People are looking to end depressions, discouragement…” often to no avail. She asserts, “We don’t have to accept disease, addiction, etc.,” and points out that businesses and individuals, alike, seek similar answers and look for “deliverance” from those debilitating conditions. Amazingly, and a common experience apparently for many, the moment one walks through their doors, the energy is real and palpable. With an open invitation to “connect,” Ignite Movement could be your answer to igniting that “new you” and setting your New Year’s desire ablaze for a powerful transformation in 2017 … and beyond!

Positive Directions Co. It’s been said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” The Chinese proverb by the ancient philosopher, Lao-Tzu, is fitting when one contemplates the transformative longing we often seek at the turn of the New Year. We set about making resolutions and goals for the upcoming year, but more often than not, we lack the tools for seeing those to fruition. Enter Aliana Apodaca of Positive Directions. A worldwide motivational coach and inspirational speaker, this 25-year empowerment guru has perfected the art of enacting positive change among companies and individuals through effective tools that have proven successful in the areas of change management, leadership development, team building and “energizing employees.” From executive leadership coaching to staff development, Apodaca has raised the bar high for not only herself, but the very clients she works with, and is highly sought after for her expertise as a verifiable agent for change. A “local girl” raised in El Paso’s “Barrio de Ysleta,” Apodaca rose well above an abusive childhood and the inherent challenges of single parenting. The Sun City native tells of being a welfare mother who learned to hurdle the obstacles before her and instead, used them to propel herself forward into the role model of inspiration she serves for others today. A genuine advocate for women, Apodaca has been named District–Women in Business Advocate of the Year by the US Small Business Administration, Business Woman of the Year by TAMACC (Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce), among numerous other honorary recognition awards. As such, Apodaca is also the founder of the Southwest Women’s Leadership Institute, as well as the Annual Administrative Professionals Conference, and consults an impressive clientele that includes Las Palmas Del Sol Medical Center, Deloitte Consulting, El Paso Electric Company and the Bolivian Embassy, to name just a few. A visionary for change, Apodaca clearly thrives on uplifting those who seek her expertise. She affirms, “My vision is that every single person is empowered to live the life they want, to let their life shine and make this world a better place.” Aptly, Apodaca’s slogan for Positive Directions reads powerfully as, “Your source for inspiration. Your partner for change.” She believes that we are all “meant to grow, change and evolve,” which promises that for any business or individual looking to make a profound change in 2017, Apodaca is sure to point you in the absolute positive direction!

Robe-Ana Construction If you’re looking to remodel your home, renovate your business’ office space or build a structure from the ground up, Robe-Ana Construction is prepared. Established in 2011 by owner, Hector Bernal, Robe-Ana Construction specializes in high end residential and commercial custom remodeling and construction. According to Bernal, what sets his company apart from the rest is its commitment to core values, and the highest quality customer service. Bernal originally started Robe-Ana Construction to help make ends meet after retiring from playing pro-ball for the Milwuakee Brewers Organization. Being exposed to the construction world at a young age by his father, Bernal learned all aspects of the industry from top to bottom. This immersion into the construction business proved to be a valuable experience for Bernal and was the natural course for a second career. Since opening in 2011, his business has snow-balled. Bernal continues to expand his vision and energy into other projects. With vast knowledge of the industry and a complete understanding of the local market, Bernal created a platform to launch two other business ventures. He was recently named president of the luxury new home builder, KaytonLee Residential, Inc., which breaks ground this month and established a residential and commercial roofing company, HEX Roofing, Inc. Bernal, alongside his staff of experts, will work simultaneously to take these companies to the next level, as he has with Robe-Ana Construction. In just five short years, the success of Robe-Ana Construction is evident in making your dream design a reality. 68 | SPECIAL ADVERTISING

he photograph came into being in much the same way as many scientific
discoveries do, by accident. Since it became commercially available in 1839,
people have been obsessed with taking photos. Those truly overcome with this
obsession are known as photographers. In the modern era the title of photographer
is worn by many different people, with various degrees of experience behind the lens. I am blessed enough to count myself among those lucky few.
A photographer in the modern era has become something of a cautionary tale. Forbes recently named a degree in Film, Video and Photographic Arts as the second most worthless degree a graduate could have based on earning potential. However, I would like to ask you to think of a world without photos, where moments faded from memory without the ability to hold a little piece of yesterday in your hands. I cannot imagine such a place.

A Life Behind a Lens
Last summer I found myself in an art museum in Venice, Italy admiring the paintings that hung there. Each a masterpiece. Each a piece of history. Each a portrait of a person long gone from this physical realm. Already into my fourth year as a professional photographer, I thought about the life each of these people led. How this painting was probably hung with care in a family home for generations before time erased attachment to the contents of the frame. How the painting found its way to public view and how we all look at it today, studying the brush strokes forever frozen in the paint and the colors the artist used. I knew at this moment I wanted to continue my pursuit of portraiture, capturing and preserving the future images of people.

December/January, 2017 The modern photographer is a jack of many trades. Part psychologist, easing people’s insecurities about their bodies. Part entrepreneur, there are very few corporate positions for photographers, most are self employed. Part wizard, manipulating light and bending it to his will. Part technological genius, the darkroom has moved from random corners in homes into computer desktops. The great thing about being a photographer is being a part of your life’s journey, even if only for a day, many to stand as “the best day of your life” days. We join you for your engagement and
again for your wedding.
We are with you when you welcome your first child into the world and again when that child grows, has birthdays and eventually graduates. We are blessed with the ability to see all your most joyous occasions, witness you at your happiest moments and preserve it for eternity. We are more than artists; we are the collectors of the human experience.

When next you see that old black and white photo of your grandmother, young and vibrant, in the prime of her youth, smile, remember all the moments you had with her. Know that she took that photo in order to remember herself as much as to preserve for the future what she once was. Know that someone like me basked in the radiance of that brief moment and became apart of your families journey for a time. Remember that we are still among you today, wanting to capture another brief minute of history, preserving it so that your grandchildren might look back in wonder. This is worth so much more than money.

omber, Army jackets, and trench coats are classic silhouettes from the 1920s that continue
to serve as must-haves this season, and the fur
trims have made a good thing even better. The “Mr. and Mrs. Italy” offerings have become popular with stylish celebs like Rhianna and Cara Delevigne. Created in 2009 to create the perfect winter coat, Alessia Giacobino started the company known as Mr. and Mrs. Italy. She reinvented the classic parka by adding a modern twist. The designer began lining the parka’s with exotic furs, adding fur trims on cuffs and hoods, and applying the same luxe touches to classic bomber jackets and trench coats. While the high-end label ranges in price from $2,500$10,000, many local retail stores carry Italy-inspired pieces without the killer price tag. One of the most popular brands is Jocelyn Furs (pictured here), which are made of authentic fox and mink. Another more affordable option are the faux-fur selections by Central Park West. These feature adjustable and detachable faux add-ons to a wide range of styles. Whether you’re in the market for faux or the real thing, make sure you’ve got it covered when it comes to fun and fabulous furs this winter!

erving the community is what Whole Foods Market and the International Business Academy students from Bowie High School have in common.
Whole Foods Market opened its first store in El Paso, on October 19. Five percent of their opening day sales went towards a community grant they provided the students with for their Oso Good Food Truck. “Coming in (to El Paso) we want to do our best, whether it’s a local product or working with a local non profit organization, to ensure that we are infiltrating the market and supporting those that are around us,” Regional Marketing and Community Relations for Whole Foods Market Victoria Gonzalez said.
Photos courtesy of: Bowie High School
Students were given the idea about the Oso Good Food Truck after Principal Dr. Michael Warmack presented them with a school bus that was donated to the district. The idea to reconstruct and retrofit the bus into a food truck costs $35,000, but that did not stop the students from looking at the bigger picture. “It’s good knowing that you have a good support system there to get this project up and going,” senior Sisco Gonzalez said. “If we didn’t have a good community surrounding us it would make it a lot harder. We were just so grateful and excited (to receive the grant from Whole Foods Market).” The produce from the school garden will be featured in menus and recipes including: salads, stews, quesadillas, tortas and agua frescas. The proceeds from the food truck will go towards a scholarship fund for the current and future Bowie High School students.

ore than 120 individuals attended the 3rd Annual Insco Distributing Golf Tournament “Golf for Wishes” on November 3 at Butterfield Trail Golf Club. The event raised the funds for the Make-A-Wish© North Texas El Paso Regional Office to grant more wishes for area children battling life-threatening medical conditions. More than $25,000 was raised.
Four passionate committee members—Rey Madrid and Paul Guerra of Insco Distributing, Charlie Rosales of Kings Aire and Marty Olivas of Ysleta Independent School District—chose to band together to coordinate and execute the event in an effort to put together something that would benefit the El Paso community. The team volunteered hundreds of hours to coordinate the event that included a Silent Auction, lunch, golf, raffle prizes and contests.

‘Tis the time to be solo! If you’re not merry about singleness during the holiday season, here are some reasons why single-hood isn’t so bad. 1. There’s no need to compromise. The best part about riding solo is that you get to choose which party you want to go to. You no longer have to deal with splitting up your time for the holidays or attending boring holiday parties. Choose the party that best suits you … meaning the one with the best gifts and booze (wink, wink). 2. You can now spoil yourself. Aside from buying your loved ones gifts, it is now time to indulge and spoil yourself. Make sure your wants and needs are also part of the Christmas list. You have worked very hard all year, so treat. yo. self. 3. Being in a relationship during the holidays can be a pain in the butt, especially when having to find the right gift for your SO. If you are anything like me, gift giving is not my forte. The good thing is that you don’t have to stress anymore about finding the “perfect” gift for him/her. 4. Every year you get a gift that you weren’t that thrilled about. No more faking enthusiasm for any crappy gifts you get from your partner. 5. In my opinion the best part of singledom, is the fact that you no longer have to impress your SO’s family; especially the in-laws, which we all know can sometimes be difficult. 6. We all have that crazy family member who tends to drink too much and start spilling the beans. The good thing is, your aunt Jill isn’t able to embarrass you anymore. 7. You are now able to relax and enjoy quality time with your family. There’s no more having to entertain your date situation. 8. All in all, you are free to do whatever you want this holiday season, so enjoy it! You have a clean slate to create your own traditions. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Lipstick Love Several cosmetics companies are offering entire lipstick collections this season, packaged and completed enough to offer lip options that complement any makeup look you come up with during 2017. Of all the sets offered, the favorite of all beauty editors this season is the Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick Vault. This beautifully packaged collection of 38 rich, pigmented, nourishing and long-lasting lipsticks, are all the perfect size to slip in your clutch for touch ups at all of your holiday parties. Another great lipstick find this holiday season is the edgy Urban Decay Cosmetics Blackmail Vice Palette ($35, Ulta), which has 12 hot shades, including some on-trend metallic lip colors that are all the rage this winter.
Brush Binge The most sought after (and priciest) cosmetic brush set of 2016 was handsdown the Artis makeup brush set. The incredibly soft Artis Brush Elite Gold 10 Brush Set ($495, net-a-porter.com) will help ensure that your makeup is expertly blended, using densely packed CosmeFibre bristles. If you don’t want to drop such a large amount of dough, the Makeup Revolution Pro Precision Oval Brushes ($67.50 tambeauty.com) are equally attractive as the Artis brushes and more importantly, equally as effective. Another great brush set available now is the Sonia Kashuk Lavish Luxe 10-Piece Brush Set ($30, Target), which features dense fluffy white bristles and a gold finish.

Hair Dryer Hero Dyson has not only reinvented the vacuum cleaner, but has also reinvented the traditional everyday hair dryer. At $400, this is quite a steep price for a hairdryer, however for people who spend a lot of time blow drying their own hair or a lot of money on professional blowouts, this dryer may prove to be a good investment (Dyson stands behind their products to last for several years.) Not only is this dryer designed to be easier to use than a traditional dryer, the power and control of airflow with this hairdryer is truly unmatched, cutting down the time and effort you spend drying your hair significantly.

Nude Attitude Nude and neutral eyeshadow palettes have been all the rage for beauty bloggers and Instagrammers for the past couple of years and this trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Not only are these palettes extremely versatile (they make creating daytime or nighttime looks a breeze), but they will never go out style or be at the back of your makeup drawer by the end of the season. Makeup legend, Bobbi Brown, handpicked eight of her all-time favorite nude shadow palettes from her vast archives and created the ultimate nude eyeshadow palette. The Bobby Brown The Nude Library 25th Anniversary Edition ($200) is already being hailed by reviewers as the best (and the last) nude eyeshadow palette you will ever own. With 40 base, lid and liner colors designed to flatter every skin tone, this palette can create limitless looks. Also, try the Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics ($54, ulta.com).

“Well, in 2016 I said I wanted to exercise more and eat better, and I was motivated for three weeks, then life got in the way, and I kinda let it go…” Sound familiar? Most of us try to start fitness resolutions and think of an extreme ideal, then fall off the wagon and try to forget we ever said anything. Instead of going through that same old cycle of creating hollow resolutions that never get fulfilled, let’s be realistic. Here are a few tips to do a “No Resolution” resolution:

Political Animals
When sitting at your holiday dinner it is important to leave your strong political beliefs at the door. The season is
for jolly and loving times, and if someone brings up the election, or any political/religious arguments, trouble is sure to erupt. Try to focus on the good things, and enjoy the people close to you – Cheers!
Ugly Xmas ENOUGH with the ugly Christmas sweaters! Yes, they are tradition and the holiday season is the only time you can wear them out, but come on people … if they´re ugly, they´re ugly.
Grinchy Attitude It really is a time for unity, and in the cold winter, no one wants to be alone. You might not love the holidays, but being a grinch and a loner is never fun. If you´re not into the season, “fake it ‘til you make it.”
