An Interview With A Local Business Woman | By: NEISSHA KING |
Glamour Shots
Creating a Successful Business from Scratch Leonora “Leo” Campbell Owner, Glamour Shots
If you answered yes to fewer than 2 of these questions, your home is ready to become smarter.
Growing up in Antiqua, Guatemala, selling cookies in her community, Leo was always a little entrepreneur. At the age of 16, she moved to Arizona to complete high school and later college. She fell in love with a local El Pasoan, wed and moved to El Paso by the time she was 21. Over the next 18 years, she worked her way up in local retail at The White House Department Store.
Dorney Security Systems has been protecting El Paso for over 30 years. We can upgrade your existing system to bring you the convenience and peace of mind of a truly smart home—for the same price you’re paying now for just security. When The White House Department Store decided to close its’ doors, a friend presented the idea of starting a Glamour Shots franchise. At the age of 38, her life was about to change... Q
Did you have funding for the opportunity?
A
No, all of the needed funding was provided through a wonderful program.
Q
Did you have any prior experience?
A
By means of working in Human Resources at The White House Department Store,
I gained the customer service and employee relations experience. Other than that,
Glamour Shots provided the specific training for the franchise.
Q
Was the business successful from the very beginning?
A
We opened the doors in 1991 in Cielo Vista Mall. Glamour Shots was a new concept,
therefore people weren’t sure what it was but through various marketing strategies the
business began to grow. After growing to four locations, I learned what worked and what
didn’t. I decided to focus on one location to offer a full-service experience to my customers.
Q
Were you ever afraid to step out?
A
No, you have to believe in yourself. Even during the challenging times, you can never
give up. When things were very difficult, I chose to maintain a commitment to the
business and my employees. You cannot afford to lose your head. You have to sit down,
analyze the situation, and strategize your plan of attack.
Q
What would you say to those starting a new venture?
A
Listen to the advice of others. Be open to always learning and don’t be afraid to ask
questions. Choose to be a person of integrity and humility.
The Legacy She Desires to Leave Behind: She was always there to help others, and passionate about her work.

Faflick who takes care of student counseling; secretary Tanya Givens; former program participants and members of El Paso’s Firefighter Combat Challenge. Challenge Captain Efrain Garcia Jr. says he sees himself in some of the youth. “I grew up with a single mom; my dad was never around,” he says. “I got labeled as troublemaker and was told I wouldn’t amount to anything. Instead of falling into that groove, I used it as positive energy.” The firefighter has been helping with the program for a year, coming in to teach the students about the rigorous timed contest that puts skill and endurance on the line. Fire Power 40 sessions vary in length from an hour and a half for seven weeks for truancy participants to three hours or less for a school district’s student or counselor and teacher training. Agendas include a combination of life lesson talks on things like will power, conflict, ownership and decision-making; discussions, guest speakers and teamwork in action through firefighter mock scenarios. Inspiring greatness is the goal. “Sometimes you don’t know it or know how to bring that out in you,” said Garcia. “We try to bring that out in the youth we work with.” The program also includes class work with mom or dad. Garcia says the program has even made him a better person and given him life lessons.

“It’s made me a better man, made me more hungry to make this program bigger than what it is now.” Valero says the program is growing and will soon expand. He says Fire Power 40 has gained extensive local support and interest has already started to ignite on the national level.

he summer usually brings about family BBQs, 4th of July celebrations, and poolside parties. Here in the desert heat of the borderland those activities are best completed with an ice-cold beverage in hand. El Paso’s own, Yvette MarquezSharpnack, has partnered up with Vianney Rodriguez to create
“Latin Twist,” a recipe book for Latin American cocktails that are sure to keep you cool this summer. Covering multiple Latin countries plus Spain, these ladies have provided us with a go-to cocktail bible that is sure to be dog-eared and stained from so much use. Not only do the cocktails look delicious, they taste delicious and they are easy to make. A great cocktail to try is from Costa Rica called the Guarita. “If you love margaritas, you are going to love this Costa Rican version.” Made with a homemade Sweet and Sour Margarita Mix (that they have included the recipe for), water and vodka, this is just one of the drinks you can cool off with this summer as you gather around with friends and families. “Latin Twist” is available at your local Barnes and Noble store.

“Comedy is a performance art. Make no mistake. Many assume that because it is based on humor that comics are some how less vulnerable on stage than actors in a play or impromptu performance. Humor is the medium through which comics use to enlighten and argue their various philosophies. Stand up comedy is based on two very integral aspects; humor and ideas. The funnier the comic, the more adept he/she is at conveying their ideas. The more keen and diverse their ideas, the more material they have to draw from. El Paso comedy is rich with losers with stupid ideas.”

July, 2015 Robinet notes that he, and a collection of comics he refers to as “The Old School Eight,” would find their opportunities limited, with Bart Reed’s comedy club operating as their Mecca. The scene is expanding exponentially and this is a change that could not excite the old veteran more, “There’s probably a good thirty or forty guys who are really working it. Of course the venue, does not always create the comic and the difference in process between these two is truly fascinating. “I used to try to sit down and write,” say Robinet, “but I just wasn’t any good at it. So I would carry around this little spiral notebook and just collect my thoughts or sayings I would hear. These became a collection of one liners that make up my material. Throughout his life he has encountered various forms of bullying and his plan is to build up others who are going through similar struggles. Rodriguez wouldn’t agree that this was well planned out. On the contrary, “Lucid Love” found him at the perfect time. Following an injury that Rodriguez suffered in 2012, the boxer was left emotionally and physically beat. He couldn’t even run a mile and felt a “loss of identity” in his efforts to march forward. That’s when the unexpected happened and his life took a turn for the better. Sal Montelongo, a humanitarian, and the director of Lucid Love, saw the champion in the gym one day and immediately felt within his heart the need to approach him. July, 2015 have a silver lining. This woman, who truly defines the word ‘survivor’, is a dedicated philanthropist whose intelligence has no boundaries. She has a double degree in Finance/Management from the University of Texas at El Paso. Cabada has been working for a Fortune 100 company for over twentythree years in upper management and has earned countless awards. She is a mother of three, Johann Sebastian, Angeles Europa and Luis Enrique Cabada. “Lucid Love was established to carry on my son’s work and render help to the victims. We will teach the victims how to unleash the power buried in the depths of their heart, to help them forgive and find peace and happiness. Love and faith is the foundation of our work.” Destiny paved a way for the trio to unite and now they have expanded beyond what they imagined possible. As soon as all the members put their chips in, Lucid Love swiftly took off. Within weeks big things were happening. Montelongo arranged for El Nino to give presentations, resulting in a turning point in the boxer’s life. El Nino felt a breakthrough and found his calling in giving speeches to the troubled youth. It was helping him. He found an inner peace from sharing his story with others. He expressed to Montelongo and Cabado that he “felt more energy and beyond positive.” The collective team effort valued David Rodriguez as the “perfect ingredient.” Now, they have branched out all over the city and made it a global approach. The non-profit organization, that is funded by contributions, stands on a rock solid foundation. The organization is as colorful as they get. Proceeds are used for the following but not limited to: youth basketball camps, boxing camps, health fairs, seminars, heath coaching, etc. Now even more public figures have joined the organization. Famous actress “Ara Celi” who hails from El Paso is now on the scene. Lucid Love is here to help. Bullying is not okay. Period. You’re not alone ... OPEN UP! “POWER TO THE VICTIM”

PET OF THE

July, 2015
SHE IS A BIG BALL OF ENERGY, ALWAYS WANTING TO PLAY AND RUN EVERYWHERE. TCM Pet of Month highlights our readers’ best friends!
This month’s pet is Zea. Owner Christina Rivera says, “We got Zea when she was only six-weeks-old: she was the smallest and quietest little pug. She just turned a year old and still loves to be held like a baby. She is a big ball of energy, always wanting to play and run everywhere. Zea definitely has her own personality – very feisty, demanding and always hyper! She loves to play tug-o-war, tag and play fighting with her older sister Ziggy, a Chug, who sometimes has to scold her and teach her how to behave since she’s still a puppy. All in all she’s a loving, crazy and will lick-your-wholeface kind of girl.” Is your pet TCM’s next Pet of the Month? I had not seen in 20 years. This is a coincidence: an uncanny event. In the summer of 2007 I was attending a conference in Santa Fe, and during my lunch break I was online searching for doctors anywhere in the world who might be able to help my son Sam, who was born blind. I was interrupted by a call from my friend Felicia who asked me to speak to a friend of hers who also has a blind son. She had found a doctor with alternative methods and she was fearful of the doctor’s unusual protocols. I immediately called this person, got the name of that doctor, and discovered that he lived in Santa Fe and his name was Sam! This is synchronicity: an unconscious awareness of life, a set of messages and these messages that are life changing. Often times a prophecy, synchronicity is an unlikely or impossible coincidence that cannot be explained by luck or chance. Carl Gustave Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and he coined the term synchronicity to describe what he called the “acausal connecting principle” that links mind and matter. He said this underlying connectedness manifests itself through meaningful coincidences that cannot be explained by cause and effect. Such synchronicities occur, he theorized, when a strong need arises in the psyche of an individual.

Old Fashioned Summer Fun for Little Ones | By: KIRSTEN APPLEBAUM |
It is time for an “old school” summer … one that isn’t too scheduled, structured, or “plugged in,” and one that involves a little mess and a lot of imagination! Here are some ideas to break the boredom with your younger children. 86

Decorate your bikes! Buy streamers, stickers, fake flowers, pipe cleaners, bike spoke beads, decorative duct tape, little flags, and pinwheels and have a blast creating parade-quality bikes. In fact, organize a neighborhood bike parade while you are at it! And don’t forget to show them how to turn their bikes into “motorcycles” with the old playing card and clothespin trick on the spokes!
Take the boredom out of summer homework! Fill a cookie sheet with whipped cream and have your children write out the numbers, the alphabet, math facts, or their names in the whipped cream with their finger. If they get it right, they get to taste their work. Then you smear it around/erase, and do another one! You can also do this same kind of thing in the bathtub with shaving cream smeared on the side of the tub! These techniques are especially helpful with kids with learning differences because when you employ

The well itself is the mouth of a system of underground caves that delve deep into the ground. It’s actual geographical location is just northwest of Wimberley, Texas. For years people have travelled to swim in the beautiful swimming hole, which measures 12 feet across and is perfect for jumping. While in Wimberley, treat the family to a full course of fun with Wimberley Zipline Adventures tours and get the total experience while you beat the heat.

Hamilton Pool The pool known as Hamilton Pool, just 23 miles outside of Austin, Texas was originally created when the dome of the underground pool collapsed leaving today’s exposed natural pool. Now this beautiful waterfall freely flows 50 feet down into the serene water below. In all, the area encompasses 232 acres of stunning natural land perfect for hiking, biking and enjoying – even in the nastiest summer heat. This swimming hole is perfect for those who have ever wanted to swim under a real, flowing waterfall. And who could beat the location? With our state’s exciting capital just a stone’s throw away, this might be the perfect spot for you to travel to on your next long weekend.

Inks Lake State Park and Devil’s Waterhole Inks Lake State Park offers an abundance of amenities from camping to hiking and more. Just outside of Burnet, Texas, the highlight of this park is truly Devil’s Waterhole. Offering visitors the chance to swim in the lush blue waters, this waterhole is popular due to the scenic cliffs that allow the brave to jump off into the chilly, refreshing waters below.

CHICKPEA AND WHITE BEAN VEGGIE BURGER Serves 4 Ingredients: 1 Tbsp. cold pressed olive oil ½ cup chopped onions 1 cup of mushrooms 1 cup grated carrots ¼ cup cooked chickpeas 1¼ cups cooked white beans 1½ cups of cooked quinoa ¼ cup ground flaxseeds (can be ground in coffee grinder) Cracked black pepper to taste Sea or Himalayan salt to taste Directions: In a medium sauté pan heat the oil and cook the onions until tender, about 3 minutes. Add the mushrooms and carrots and continue to cook until all the moisture from the mushrooms has been evaporated. Remove from heat and cool. Add the chickpeas and white beans to a food processor and pulse several times to coarsely chop the mixture, but do not purée. Transfer the chickpeas and white beans to a bowl and add mushroom and the veggie mixture, quinoa and flax seeds and mix well. Then begin to make your veggie patties. Add sea or Himalayan salt and cracked black pepper to taste. Grill until the patties are done, cooking evenly on both sides. Be sure to add some coconut or olive oil to the grill so that the patties do not stick.

BARBECUE BISON CHILI BURGERS AND HOT DOGS WITH RED ONIONS Serves 4-6 Ingredients: 2 lbs. ground organic bison 2 large Big Jim chili peppers Âź cup Organicville BBQ Sauce 1 large red onion Sea or Himalayan salt Cracked black pepper 1 package of organic bison hot dogs Directions: Place the ground bison in a large bowl. Peel and cut the red onion and remove the seeds from the chilies and dice both onions and chilies. Place them in the bowl with the ground bison and add salt and pepper to taste. Mix the onions, chilies and bison together and make the patties to the desired size. Place on the grill and be sure to cook both sides evenly to the desired temperature. Also, place the bison hot dogs on the grill and as an option for both burgers and hot dogs, serve with sour kraut, cooked onions, avocados and heirloom tomatoes topped with stone ground mustard, barbeque sauce or organic ketchup on gluten free whole grain buns.
MEDITERRANEAN HICKORY FLAVORED CORN ON THE COB WITH OLIVE OIL AND SPICES Serves 4-6 Ingredients: 4-6 organic ears of corn Mediterranean spices (garlic, rosemary, thyme, parsley) to taste Âź cup cold pressed olive oil Cracked black pepper to taste Sea or Himalayan salt to taste Aluminum foil Crushed ice Hickory chips placed on top of the charcoal for flavor. Directions: Husk the corn and rinse. Cut a rectangle of aluminum foil large enough to wrap each corncob twice. Place each corn in the center of the foil with the shiny side on the inside. Rub each corncob with olive oil, sprinkle Mediterranean spices over the corn and add 3 tablespoons of crushed ice. It is important to wrap the corn with the aluminum foil so that the edges of the foil are crimped and sealed securely so as the ice melts, the liquid will be retained in the foil pocket. Make an envelope with the foil and double fold the edges. Place the seams face up. Cook for 30-40 minutes, turning the corn over half way through the grilling process (cooking time will vary depending on the desired tenderness, variety and age of corn and some corn may be done in half the time). Try piercing with a fork to see if the corn is tender enough then serve.

hen some of the hottest bodies in Hollywood like Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, and Madonna all credit their toned physique to weight training … America is starting to see a trend. Weights aren’t just for boys anymore! More than ever women are hitting the weight racks and seeing
the many benefits of strength training.
Benefits of Weight Training for Women • You will lose body fat – your body burns more calories the more you put on lean muscle. • You will be physically stronger – everyday activities, such as grocery shopping and climbing stairs, will be easier for you because of the endurance and strength you attain from weight training.
• You will become mentally stronger – sticking to a strict weight lifting program will make you mentally stronger because that discipline you learn can be used in your daily life when it comes to making healthy choices.
• You will prevent injury – because lifting weights strengthens your muscles and tendons, you are less likely to get injured. It becomes more important as we age because strength training helps keep the muscles around your joints stronger. • You will reduce health risks – weight training helps prevent diabetes because it improves the way your body processes sugar. It also helps prevent pain caused by arthritis and helps increase bone density to prevent bone fractures. • You will look more toned – strength training will improve your physical appearance by enhancing your skin tone and creating a tighter, more toned look all around. • You will feel better about yourself – becoming a physically stronger woman will boost your self-esteem. • You will feel more energized – weight training increases endorphin levels in your body, which helps as an anti-depressant and boosts your daily energy. • You will develop better body mechanics – strength training helps improve your balance and coordination. Getting started on a weight training program First consult your physician if you are healthy enough to start a weight-training program. If so, it’s wise to hire a personal trainer to get you started. A personal trainer will help correct your form and show you how to put together a good workout. A good trainer should start you off at your starting level, and work you up to heavier weights and higher reps. Cardio is a great supplement to your plan if you are looking to lose weight.

The Canutillo Eagles received the 2014 5A Army Strong Texas Football Team of the Year award on May 21 due to their performance and success in the latest season of high school football. “Most definitely, it was the best season Canutillo has had,” said Brooks.

BUSINESS BLOCKBUSTERS | By: FELIPA SOLIS |
The Summer Blockbuster is clearly anyone’s guess. Yes, we knew about the gang from Marvel, but it was rather delightful to see “Pitch Perfect 2” surprise everyone by taking it to the “finish line” and beating out the highly anticipated, and amazing “Mad Max-Fury Road.” Disney’s “Tomorrowland,” with George Clooney, was in the top spot, but not as strong as Disney anticipated for Memorial Day Weekend. Now that we are in what is considered to be Blockbuster Season, let’s take a look at a few films that could be bringing in the money this summer. 118
