What a treat it has been discovering your magazine! I was first introduced to The City magazine following your publication of a profile of our daughter, Dr. Lisa Kafchinski, in your April issue. Having grown up on the East Coast, with NYC and DC as focal points, I am so pleasantly surprised by your El Paso magazine. It is sophisticated, elegant, beautifully laid out, informative and fun to read. Your publication rivals the best of publications.

THE CITY

The family of topical magazines, ranging from The City Medical Issue to Weddings, Spaces, and After 50, is appealing and a great way to promote segments of El Paso. I congratulate you and your staff on producing such high quality articles, photos, and advertising. May you be blessed with continuing success in promoting El Paso and its people. e think a lot about men, we talk a lot about men, so why not write about men? This is our fourth year of publishing an issue exclusively devoted

to men. In our pages you’ll find stories of triumph and various

successes. Aside from sharing their stories, we offer any man who reads

this: grooming advice, styling tips and a peek into cryotherapy (page 106).

The definition of a man’s role in society keeps changing, as well as what we want

in a man. What doesn’t change is their unfailing desire to be ambitious, to make a name for themselves and create something that will make them proud. As you’ll read when you turn each page, every man we profiled has created their own success, their own extension of themselves translated into their business. Whether it’s an energy drink, selling shoes, a photo booth or creating art, the characteristic that unites them all is that they are hardworking. We proudly feature a wonderfully diverse group of men, all admirable and distinct in varied ways. Our cover stars, brothers Drew and Jaime, are not letting age get in the way of their dreams. They turned their love for shoes into a pop-up business, offering other sneakerheads a place in the city to purchase rare finds. You will also find an exclusive interview with Mayor Oscar Leeser, a farewell to his time in office. As I said in the article you can read on page 24, he will always have my vote. He has been a top-notch mayor and a huge proponent in creating a great border relationship and bringing businesses to the city. His constituents will miss him. On a lighter note, we show you how men continue to find their own style—on page 78—and what the current fashion trends are. For some, it’s a kind of style made up of the basics … a comfortable jean and jacket combo, for others it means a refined suit and tie, and still others find their signature in a more “metrosexual” style. The men in our office each showed off their style as they walked downtown El Paso. The heart of the city was used as a backdrop to showcase this season’s smartest sport coats, messenger bags and color combos. So, cheers to the men on these pages—may you have continued success in all your endeavors.

Yet, the best interests of the community selflessly prevailed and during his very first press conference at 5 p.m. that day, Oscar Leeser detailed an agenda for creating jobs, lowering unemployment and representing the community in its entirety. He says, “It always seemed to frustrate me that we always seem to ask 100 percent of Photo by John Horta

the people to pay taxes, but some of the decisions made are for five percent of the people and that’s not correct.” Representing 100 percent of the people was exactly what he committed to. Upon taking office, what most don’t realize, is that Mayor Leeser voluntarily chose to donate his salary to charity, a decision that came during those early discussions regarding the manner in which he’d operate while in office. It was also a decision initially kept quiet, so as not to appear as being a “campaign tool.” Now referred to as the Commitment to Care Fund, the Leesers made their intent to pledge the mayoral salary public during their inaugural ceremony and admirably, Mayor Leeser has donated 100 percent of his salary ever since. From the beginning, Lady Leeser has selected a worthwhile charity every month as part of that commitment, each and every penny helping our city and its residents. In getting to know the mayor more personally, we also learn that his agenda for transparency extended to many of the expenses related to food and travel from hosting visiting companies. As opposed to customarily being expensed to taxpayers, these were absorbed by him personally. In fact, he’s also turned down every gas allowance provided to him as a city employee and says, “I didn’t want anything. I wanted to do this all for the right reasons and I feel very lucky that I have the ability to be able to afford that and give back to our community.” As for being the only elected mayor in El Paso who wasn’t born in the U.S., Mayor Leeser

“The Alexandra Flores case, it was a kidnapping/murder in the Lower Valley,” he recalled. “It was a case that made international news. My role was not in the investigation, but in getting the information out. I saw this little girl. I worked with the mom and the dad at the time to put out a plea to the kidnapper, it’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. When it was all said and done, that case made me realize I had enough. Police work wasn’t fun anymore, I didn’t enjoy living in tragedy and that being a daily thing. I needed something different,” said Al. He stayed in communications and took on a role as public information officer at the Housing Authority for the City of El Paso. He was then promoted to Director of Housing Programs and Community Services. After 2.5 years at HACEP, Al had the opportunity to join the Child Crisis Center of El Paso.

drives you to attain it. Passion sometimes transpires from a dark place, but it allows you to shed the lingering negativity.

Dion J. Castro, whose life shifted in a positive way after graduating from Lady of the Lake in San Antonio, attended school on a sports scholarship for basketball, making it a priority with academics falling to the wayside. Dion received a letter from school announcing a possible academic probation. This, and other struggles caused Dion’s downfall. With time off from school, Dion realized that he needed motivation to get back in control. A blessing in disguise, “a wakeup call” as he described it, was what he explained was needed to overcome the situation. Through this, and the help of a teacher, Dion dedicated himself to school, taking the mandatory 18 hours and graduating in the spring of 2015 with a 3.5 GPA as a new, positive, highly motivated person. “It was the process that I needed to go through to shed that old me or the skin that had been dragging me down. It was the process that allowed me to get the mindset that I have now, where I view struggle as temporary,” says Dion. Returning to El Paso, Dion began his first venture in youth basketball training. He set up shop in an eastside location while maintaining a job at the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce. Dion knew there was something more. He took the plunge and bought a barber studio after a deal was struck with the previous owner. Initially viewing the barber studio as a business that could run on its own, Dion was surprised to find that he was heavily involved in revamping the studio after taking it over. Engaging with his employees to build quality customer service, Dion’s focus is to treat the barber studio as a company. “It was a lot more beneficial than I could have ever anticipated, it was individual growth,” says Dion. Through that individual growth, gained through the studio and his job at the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce, Dion ventured onto a new idea that had been developing in his mind: One Life. Dion explains that while drinking “the competition,” an idea for an energy drink came along. With a desire for a strong

I look at the competition and I want to be that arrow that pierces through,” he says With over twelve local businesses, including Crossfit 915, Steve’Os, Phit Phuel and many others featuring One Life, Dion strives to include El Paso in the growth of his product. His ultimate goal is to feature it in a chain store. By creating a wave of change in the energy drink business, with a bold message and refreshing flavor, Dion’s focus is unstoppable. “There

TIN MAN IS ALL HEART A Texas Craft Beer Concept | By: JOLENE REZA KEIPP photography by: BOBBY GALLAGHER |

T

he urbanized, industrial district that is TIME at Montecillo has gusto so it should come as no surprise that the businesses set up in there do not lack in any creativity and allure. The area is built on a heap of excitation and the spirits that abound are

thriving and fresh. Tin Man Filling Station embodies all of these qualities and ensures their beers are cold and in superabundance. And they do it for you. Tin Man Filling Station at Montecillo is El Paso’s only beer growler filling station that carries regional craft beers as well as beer from three very supportive local breweries. A macro brew mart, if you will, that’s part “sit-and-sample” or “get-and-go.” “Our atmosphere is low key to where you can run in and out or sit down and enjoy explains, ”Kenji Shigematsu, co-owner with Moises Valdez. The vibe is not the only thing that’s low-key, the prices could not be more chill too. “We want El Pasoans to come into Tin Man and tell us what their tastes are because we believe craft beer is for everyone and if you have an idea of what you like to drink, we’ll find the best fit for you.” Shigematsu and Valdez are both native El Pasoans with an enthusiasm for craft beers and a fervor to secure a spot on the map for their city as a craft beer location.

www.thecitymagazineelp.com

45

June, 2017 The inception of Tin Man, a Texas concept, came from the craving to fill the void of a local growler station and their shared love for Texas craft beer, made in a traditional or non-mechanized way, often coming from smaller breweries. Craft brewers are defined as small, independent and traditional not at all unlike Tin Man itself, hence the utilization of the historic beer growler, a 64-oz. glass receptacle in which you can take your macro brew home. “Growlers are gaining popularity again and we wanted something new to El Paso, something that old-school breweries used, it’s the Tin Man brand,” Moises adds. Tin Man is staffed with the authorities in ale and their patience for fitting you into the perfect Texas craft beer is top priority. Kenji asserts, “Our staff are very knowledgeable. Even to help you select a brew to fit your menu.” Beer Snobs? No, just eager craft beer virtuosos with impeccable customer service and the desire to pair you with something they know you’re going to love. This is not always an easy feat as their selections are all Texas craft beer. With a menu of 15-20 weekly rotating beers, there’s bound to be more than one that will undoubtedly become a staple at your next cookout or pool party. So, what are Tin Man’s intentions? “We want to convert draft beer drinkers.” Kenji says. Coowner Moises adds, “When someone new comes into Tin Man, we want them to feel

comfortable to ask questions. We’re going to ask questions as well: ‘What type of beer do you usually drink?’, ‘What’s the occasion?’ We’re listening and we’ll encourage you to sample a few that we think you’ll enjoy.” This is where the hard work comes in; the customer’s obligation in this agreement is that they must sample until they like. Hard work indeed. Once this has been accomplished, a 64-oz. growler is prepared and sealed with your new favorite beer.

“We want every home in El Paso to have a Tin Man growler in them. Growth is possible, explains Moises. With the Montecillo filling station being the second location to open for the business owners (the first off Zaragoza in far east El Paso) it would certainly seem that growth is possible and an iron clad certainty for Tin Man.

MEN in Business “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” - Henry Ford As our Sun City prepares to welcome a new mayoral elect, it’s only appropriate that we bid farewell to current Mayor Oscar Leeser with, tellingly, one of his favorite quotes by Ford. Without question, these memorable words ring true for our featured “Men In Business.” Representing a variety of fields, a diversity of backgrounds and their own unique vision, one thing’s clear: These men have proved that success is a direct component of intentional and focused thought. Read the following showcase and enjoy what gives each of these men their own edge... You might just want to do business with them!

Jesus Briseño, Realtor® at ERA Sellers & Buyers When Jesus Briseño, Realtor® at ERA Sellers & Buyers, joined the company in 2015 as a brand-new agent, he defined the phrase, “hit the ground running.” At only 23 years of age, he earned himself the 2015 “Fast Starter Award” for the most residential sales in the shortest period of time and in only four months, proved that age really is just a number. If that’s not enough, he hit the $1 million mark for total closings in April 2017, considered a rarity for agents within a short, 30-day period and what most, usually, do in one year. With 9 years of sales experience under his belt, having worked in sales since age 16, Jesus says of his newfound career, “I love what I do ... so, why not sell people their greatest investment in life, their home.” From first to multiple home purchases, investment properties, flips and foreclosures, he’s well-versed in residential real estate and there to “guide you through the home-buying jungle and help anyone find their dream home.” He also loves to give back. Last year, he organized a clothing drive for the Opportunity Center for the Homeless called, “Drop A Layer,” which kept 50 plus homeless individuals warm and he aims to double that number this year. With plans to “connect 50 different people to their dream home” by year-end, Jesus Briseño is way ahead of the curve! Jesus Briseño, Realtor® ERA Sellers & Buyers 1346 N. Zaragosa Rd., Ste. At just 22, his company and his team of 13 employees has not only brought a fun and unique photo booth to El Paso, but has also created a fun work environment for creative Millennials to contribute their ideas and work together. “Mr. Photo Booth gave me the opportunity to stay here, do what I love and contribute to our community. His kinetic works are created of white or multicolored incandescent, neon, strobe or LED lights, whose pulsing, flickering and fading is controlled by computer codes that the artist writes himself. Leo engages with his lights to create patterns that pulse in non-repeating sequences. The artist had this to say about his work, “Things are slowly fading in, fading out. It has a lot of range and sequences generally last one to two minutes. I’m keenly aware of people’s attention spans and I feel like something discernible has to happen within that time span.”

June, 2017 Elements of Leo’s childhood growing up in the southwest can be evidenced in his work by the many suggestions of phenomena of nature—ground-like waves, the flickering of stars and the vibrancy of a hot setting sun. Leo says, “There’s always this element of chance. When something compelling occurs, I capture those moments. And then there’s the process of harvesting those discoveries, building them up into more elaborate compositions that are then displayed on the pieces, and that’s what gets randomized—a random order, for a random amount of time.” Seeing Leo’s work in action is a compelling sight to behold. One of the artist’s most iconic light sculptures is The Bay Lights, which shines from dusk until dawn on the San Francisco Bay Bridge. It is 1.8 miles wide and 500 feet high and was inspired by the Bay Bridge’s 75th anniversary. Now an imposing permanent installation, a group of more than 20 independent analysts from leading companies in and around San Fracisco has determined that The Bay Lights has boosted the regional economy by more than $100 million annually. Although the artist has works in public installations, galleries and private collections throughout the United States and abroad, the

You saw the women in business last month, now feast your eyes on the men in our office–– the real-life men in business. Over the past 75 years, how businessmen dress for work has changed a great deal. Don’t agree? Have you seen any men sporting top hats and doublebreasted suits lately? While the foundation of a suit has been relatively the same, materials, accessories and style has changed. The idea of casual Fridays has also surfaced in the office, making it possible for jeans to be worn smartly with a nice blazer on top of a button down

Etiquette

Appreciating Dad | By: JOANN WARDY |

Having been in the gift business, I couldn’t help observe the noticeable difference in sales between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Somehow fathers always got the short end of the stick. It never seemed quite fair. While men seem to be more difficult to shop for than women (since we love everything), we must not forget the importance of acknowledging our fathers on his special day. Here are some suggestions: • A well thought-out letter expressing our love and appreciation • Taking him out to dinner • Buying him a special book we know he will find of interest • Equipment for his favorite sport • Tools if he is into them • Tickets to his favorite entertainment • Don’t forget the big hug and kiss and the words “I love you, dad” • Spend a special afternoon with just your dad Have a wonderful Father’s Day! Compliments that Women Can’t Resist | By: JANNET BUSTILLOS |

This month I decided to focus on helping you gentlemen out in the love department. Let’s face it, men tend to lack in the complimenting factor. Compliments are important in any relationship but it can also be a tricky situation. You must learn to compliment women without seeming disingenuous. Be wary men, women can usually tell if you’re lying, so make sure you mean your compliments. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

The Power of “No-Makeup” Makeup: Men’s Edition W | By: ELYSE SIMONS |

hy wouldn’t you like to look 30 when you’re actually 50? Studies show that 1 out of 10 men secretly wear makeup. Despite what you may think or believe, men are wearing makeup and are proud of it! Men today want to look like David Beckham, George

Clooney and David Gandy. They are inspirational modern and good looking men who happen to wear a bit of concealer and lip balm. The key to men’s makeup is to look natural. Makeup for men is becoming mainstream for headshots, weddings, photos, video, TV, film, and everyday living. The most important part of men’s makeup is creating a smooth texture

and surface. The key factors are giving the skin life with color, providing “lift” with light/dark theory and an overall groomed appearance. The goal for men’s makeup is to look natural. A good rule of thumb is less-is-more. The power of a no-makeup makeup look is a groomed healthy look. This is easily accomplished by taking care of all spots, blemishes, shine, redness, broken capillaries and overall grooming. Today, makeup brands like Tom Ford, Yves Saint Laurent, Jane Iredale, Menaji and Marc Jacobs are focusing on men’s makeup products.

TRENDS IN PLASTIC SURGERY FOR MEN IN 2017 | By: SOUTHWEST PLASTIC SURGERY | We are becoming a society of change, creating awareness in living a healthy lifestyle, and looking our best. Beer bellies, baldness, and crows feet are not considered sexy in men anymore. Sometimes, hitting the gym is not enough to obtain the result one is looking for. More and more men are opening up to the idea of exploring the possibilities of getting a little help here and there. Visiting the plastic surgeon’s office has become accepted. The latest trends in plastic surgery for men are:

2. PECTORAL AUGMENTATION improves the contour of the male chest by augmenting and reshaping the pectoral area, giving a more muscular and athletic appearance. This augmentation can be accomplished with fat transfer or by placing a pectoral implant.

3. RHINOPLASTY is the medical term for a nose job or nose surgery. This is the ideal procedure to correct the size, shape, and aspect of your nose. Men who typically search for a rhinoplasty are those who have had a previous injury or their nose has been broken, have a deviated septum, or simply are not happy with the overall appearance of their nose.

to the unwanted appearance of the enlarged breasts. Fortunately, a board certified plastic surgeon can help by surgically removing the excess fat with liposuction, or in some cases by performing an endoscopic mastectomy to remove the breast gland tissue.

5. HAIR TRANSPLANT is the surgical way to correct hair loss. This option is usually considered when alternative treatments have been proven ineffective. Hair restoration techniques have greatly evolved in recent years and deliver extremely natural results. Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) are two of the most commonly used techniques for hair transplantation. Hair follicles are extracted from the donor site where hair is healthy and transplanted to areas where hair loss has ensued. Transplanted hair will grow

June, 2017 and the Lesotho Agriculture College. This incredible background behind keyhole eco gardens are why they were the perfect educational/informational tool to be brought into the El Paso Zoo. In addition to being an incredible teaching tool for the zoo’s guests, the crops raised in the Eco Garden help feed the animals at the zoo as part of their enrichment program. Animal enrichment is provided to animals to provide mental and physical stimulation in their daily lives, and these crops allow zoo staff to stimulate the animals through a variety of scents, smells and tastes. “It’s amazing to be able to walk over to the Eco Garden and ‘harvest’ what I’ll be using for enrichment,” said Zoo Enrichment Coordinator Carrie Trudeau. “And the animals love it. You’ll see our snakes curl up on top of the rosemary and our tortoises race to the other side of their exhibit to get some hibiscus.” The Eco Garden is a perfect example of the mission and purpose of the El Paso Zoo. The zoo acts and communicates with the purpose of inspiring people to value wild animals, taking responsibility for their safeguarding and action for their stability. The Eco Garden does this by highlighting the critical connection between humans, animals and the earth. “[The Eco Garden] project with us, the Zoo and the Junior League was such a tremendous opportunity,” said Renee Neuert, Director of the El Paso Zoological Society. “Our primary goal is to fund and support the efforts of the zoo, but we also work diligently to develop and maintain meaningful programs and engaging exhibits that emphasize an appreciation for wildlife and healthy ecosystems. Our Eco Garden does just that, and we couldn’t be happier to be a part of such a fantastic project.” Guests are encouraged to visit the Africa area of the zoo where they can find signs that provide information about the Eco Garden and how to build one of their own at home. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

he word “chakra” comes from an ancient Indian language known as Sanskrit. Chakra means vortex, spinning wheel, or circle. Now imagine the chakras as circles of energy, flowing all the way through our body.

These circles of energy aid in the running of our body, mind, and soul. If a chakra is out of balance, this could cause our physical, mental and spiritual selves to suffer. These chakras start at the base of the spine and move upwards to the last one at the crown of the head. The following seven chakra symbols are vital to our health.

ROOT or BASE CHAKRA (base of spine tailbone) Color is red and rules zodiac signs Capricorn, Virgo and Taurus. Represents earth-centered energy and physical strength. SPRING

June, 2017

Into Flavor | By: JESSE MAYNES |

Spring is finally here! That means it’s time for vibrant flavors that go hand in hand with the shining sun and outdoor activities. Ceviche is one of my favorite spring-time dishes. It’s a dish that I hold close to my heart. it’s always had a place in my home growing up and on a table when dining at a restaurant. I took my favorite parts of different ceviche’s and came up with a killer recipe that is fresh, “citrus-y” and fulfilling. It may contain ingredients you’re not accustomed to using, but at the end of the day we’re building levels to create something special. Hot days and refreshing seafood work so well together, I urge you to try this dish! If seafood isn’t your thing, try using grilled fruit and dry cured meat for an unmatched salad that is sure to steal the show. Prosciutto is a dry-cured uncooked thinly sliced ham that embodies the best of a fresh fatty taste that’s a true Italian gift to the world—also known as prosciutto crudo. Grilled fruit compliments the fresh fattiness of prosciutto and I’m confident will be the new standard to specialty salads in your recipe collection. 108

A Day at

TheTemple 112

www.thecitymagazineelp.com

June, 2017

t r av e l

I miss China. E very day I spent there was an adventure. Especially the

day we visited The Temple of Heaven.

Added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998, this

Chinese Cultural Relic has proudly stood southeast of the

Zhengyang Gate in Beijing for centuries. Started in the year

1420 by Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty, it continued to

grow in unparalleled splendor, until its final completion during the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty.

The Temple of Heaven is one of the best preserved architectural gems on planet Earth, and as with many human masterpieces, it was erected (in Pagoda shaped reverence) as a place of worship—a historical sanctuary where emperors bowed prostrate and humbled, praying before the powers of heaven. In the northern quadrant of the grounds, The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests was originally named the Great Hall for Sacrificial Rituals. Accordingly, its main attraction is the excessively opulent Altar of Prayer. This altar features 24 pillars which reach to the ceiling and support vibrant, carved eaves representing seasonal solar positions. Golden Dragon and Phoenix images embellish the raised well or domed structure. Below the dome, in the middle of a stepped marble Dias, sits the encased Tablet of the God of Heaven, where, on the 10th day of the first lunar month, the emperor would hold an elaborate ceremony and pray for plentiful grain and good harvests

of Heaven throughout his vast kingdom.

Only the emperor or his appointed representative could climb those stairs and officiate over the ceremony. It is said that monks

secretly cleaned the Dias after dark as their mere mortal presence on this holiest of platforms might lead to their demise.

June, 2017 We knew that this building was significant when we saw the series of arched, glazed gates one must pass through in order to reach the roadway that leads to its entrance. You will also pass The Echo Wall before you get to the door. This acoustically designed barrier amplified the sound of clanging gongs and melodic lutes that accompanied the emperors’ procession. Inside, tablets commemorating the eight emperors of the Qing Dynasty are embodied in jade and blue-tinged vases that sit on scarlet hand-carved pedestals. They form a crescent on either side of the most precious tablets of God and heaven, centered beneath a set of marble and cushioned blue silk stairs that climb to a throne where the emperor sat alone, in divine contemplation. The tour is far from over though. The Fasting Palace where the emperor and his court prepared their bodies for sacred rituals; The 24 Star Worshipping Gates that surround The Circular Mound; The Heavenly Center Stone or Supreme Ultimate Stone where holy men read prayers so loudly they believed the words could be heard by the Gods above; The Beamless Palace where the emperor greeted and met with his ministers; The Tassel Gate at the entrance to the emperor’s inner sanctum and bed; the hexagon shaped Well House of The Butcher’s Pavilion, covered in green tiles and bronze figurines, The Hall of Gathered Happiness, where dancers and musicians performed in the Ming and Qing Dynasties; The Double Ring Pavilion built to commemorate Emperor Qianlong’s mother and The Seven Star Stones, an aerolite placed by humans to perfectly depict the distance and position of each star in The Big

in 1980. The Hospitals of Providence

partners with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to ensure that every child with a life-threatening medical condition has the opportunity to experience a life-changing wish. Vivian, an 18-year-old patient of the Hospitals of Providence, is one of the many children that was “prescribed a wish. Today, Vivian is enjoying her senior year at Franklin High School. Vivian was diagnosed with a condition called neurofibromatosis at age two. At eight, she was diagnosed with an optic glioma. She recalls not being scared during that time, however she also remembers being very sad and having a big dislike of needles. Doctor visits, hospital stays and two years of aggressive chemotherapy were part of her journey.

Daring Denim

It is time to bring denim to the forefront as a staple in anyone’s wardrobe. Denim deserves to be respected, it is versatile and it really is in everyone’s closet. Rocking the “Canadian suit” is no longer a no-no! Try to flaunt denim on denim, or even opt for a more stylish denim piece that will sizzle your outfit. It can either be a denim embellished jacket, a bold denim pant, or short. It is up to you, but give denim a well-deserved chance and don’t be afraid to experiment!

Ring! Ring! Put that engagement ring away and rock a statement piece that will make all your girlfriends jealous. Sometimes a chunky piece of jewelry is the way to go to accessorize the perfect outfit. The material is up to you, but with so many styles to choose from you can’t go wrong. Bejewel your fingers with big stones, or if you like a simpler style, you can choose smaller rings and sort them out on all of your fingers. Pearls for a daintier look, silver for a classic look. Cuff your fingers and flip them up!

Keep it Fresh! We all know that summer is the devil when you’re living in the desert. With the sun shining down upon us, we tend to sweat like crazy and let those odors creep on us. Keep yourself fresh all summer long by spending a little more on personal hygiene, because no one likes a smelly armpit, trust me! Spend good money on a good deodorant and even some baby powder to keep everything fresh and clean. Walgreens is a great spot to pick up a good deodorant (and The City Magazine!). Don’t be the friend that smells funky, it’s not fun.

Cellphone dates It is not a fun sight when you see someone on a date and catch them on their cellphone. It seems like we’ve lost touch with personal relationships and it’s easier to engage through our cellphones. Even at the movie theatre, it is really annoying when someone pops their phone out just to check that Facebook notification, really? You can’t bare not looking at your phone for an hour and a half? Ridiculous. Invest on one “date” without a phone and see how much you’ll enjoy your friends or partner.

Keeping it Basic We all need basic pieces in a wardrobe (a white shirt, a black shirt, etc.…) but what is with these overpriced basics nowadays!? We’ve seen white T-shirts selling for more than 50 dollars, and let’s be honest, who wants to pay that much for a regular plain tee? A lot of stores take advantage on the fact that some of these basic items could be highend or a well-known brand, but no one is checking anyone’s tags so it doesn’t matter if that white T-shirt underneath your jacket cost $5 at Walmart or $150 online. Who cares?

Tan-NO-rexic Are you an Oompa Loompa? If yes, keep your orange fake tan. If not, then ditch it.

Create a Tax-free Nest Egg for Your Children | By: KEVIN O’NEILL | It’s not a question we like to ask ourselves, but we all think about it at one time or another…

“What financial gifts can I leave for the people I love, after I die”? By setting up the right kind of life insurance policy, you and your Financial Consultant can

work together as a team to provide tax free funds for all of your beneficiaries, including your children. These funds may be used to pay for whatever they need, including a better education, a mortgage-free home, their own retirement fund or the taxes they might owe as a result of the rest of their inheritance, left behind by you. Let’s start by establishing a very important fact. No matter how much the Death Benefit in your Life Insurance Policy amounts to, every dollar of it is received income tax free by your beneficiaries. That includes State and Federal taxes –no one will pay income tax on whatever Life Insurance benefits you bequeath.

Financial Investment Specialist 5925 Silver Springs, Suite “B” El Paso, Texas 79912 Office: 915-587-7777 Cell: 915-373-0989 Email: Kevin.Oneill@Ceteraadvisors.com www.ONeillFinance.com

Even inherited IRAs, tax-deferred annuities and some qualified retirement plans can be taxed. Depending on their individual circumstances, your beneficiaries may pay more than a third of these monies back in taxes. BUT NOT SO WITH LIFE INSURANCE. Keeping this fact in mind, how soon should you sit down with a Life Insurance Consultant and review your insurance options? How about today?

A Different Option There’s another way to accomplish income tax free financial giving. If you really don’t have the

funds for a substantial monthly insurance payment or your age or health restrictions mean you’d have to pay more for a policy than you feel you want to, have you considered talking to your children about them buying a life insurance policy on your life? This also applies when you have funds available and want to avoid leaving them behind as taxable estate funds. By giving your children those funds NOW and asking them to invest those funds in a life insurance policy on your life, you can not only save them money on unavoidable estate taxes, but also help them to achieve an income tax free nest egg. Do you believe it’s possible you may have to pay higher taxes in the future? Will you max out your 401(k) deposits for the year but still want to save more money in a tax-deferred shelter? Have your circumstances changed since you took out the Life Insurance Policy you already own? Do you think your beneficiaries may have to pay a higher rate of taxes than you want them to, when they inherit your house or your family business? These are all good reasons to review your Life Insurance Policy with a Financial Consultant. Don’t wait till it’s too late, please call and set up an appointment today.
