EDITOR-in-Chief Women aren’t the only one with issues, but the men in this one have been carefully chosen to be featured in order to showcase the talent that is involved in this city. As women, we have different criteria for our men. We like our men to be heroic, smart, have excessive manners, wear a suit and tie like Matthew McConaughey, wear jeans and a T-shirt like Brad Pitt and we like our men to smell good. We like our men casual, cool and confident, with the personal knack of looking suave. But mostly, we like businessmen who are family oriented, give back to the community, men who take care of their own. Whether they’re preppy, sporty or classy, we like our men to be that “stand up sorta guy.” He opens the door, pulls out the chair and orders our wine. He sets an example for his children and supports his wife and family – and not just in a financial sense. The men of the Sun City are all unique individuals. We have chosen three main ones that each have their own charm. Carlos Villalobos, owner of Pointe Homes, has an incredible story that started as a young businessman of 12 years old. He built on success, despite doors closing in his path, and then came back with a vengeance in the world of home building. His perseverance led him to be the successful man he is today. Renard Johnson, CEO of METI, has had his business ranked by Inc. 500, placed above well-known companies such as GoDaddy. His entrepreneurial mindset and hard work ethic have gotten him to where he is now. We also feature Randy Johnson, a man you have seen many times on your television screen. His story of humbleness and hard work are inspirational, taking on a passion that fell into his lap after an accident. So, flip through the pages and learn about the different men that make up our beautiful city.

His vision of “smarter growth” is, essentially, what “breathes life into the community, keeps a positive cycle of job creation [and] boosts the economy.” As a major-player in the growth and vitality that we’re seeing in our city today, Pointe Homes has flourished in its simple ‘Built For You” motto. Above that, Villalobos does so proudly for and by his wife, Sanaan Villalobos, a civil and environmental engineer at ARCADIS, who’s currently expecting their second child. Twoyear old son, Landric, will soon have a baby sister, Lail, to keep both parents even busier than ever. And “as long as it’s fun”, the passionate and young Villalobos promises to use the many years left in him to keep building for you AND our city! Q. What goals and expectations did you have when you started the company? A. I haven’t achieved it yet, I came real close, but one of my first goals was having 1000 employees and $100 million in revenue in 10 years. I got close to that with revenue, but not with employees; now I am nowhere near there and I have to rebuild again. Another goal was to provide quality employment, and high paying jobs for the community in El Paso. I am headquartered here, with no contracts in El Paso. Q. How do you manage to headquarter in El Paso while having no contracts in the city? A. I am so passionate about El Paso and I choose to stay here, this is where my memories are. I could drive on Dyer St. and all my memories as a kid come back, I could look up at the mountains and know I used to go up there with my motorcycle. Q. What do you appreciate most about El Paso? A. I think El Paso offers everyone, young and old, the opportunity to go as far as they want to. I have had the ability to not only grow up here, not only have a wonderful education, but also start and have a great company. El Paso, and my university, gave me the opportunity. The people here are the nicest people in the world. The people here are the hardest working people in the world. El Paso offers so many great opportunities – if I had to list them, they would go all the way to California and back. Q. Where is the most unlikely place you have found people and employees? A. The most unlikely place I found somebody, is a guy who is still with me today, was when I had first started, and this was after my [computer] server had crashed. It crashed on a Friday evening and I called Microsoft Help Desk. The guy got on the phone and we worked from a Friday evening to a Saturday afternoon to repair the system, as I was expecting to hear news that I won a contract. I needed my email to work, so I got him on the phone and he heard how desperate I was. His name is Frank Woods and I would never forget him. He heard the desperation in my voice, he stayed with me, and worked through the entire night. I told him ‘Frank, if you ever need a job, call me and I will hire you.’ About a week later, he called me off line and said, ‘Look, I’m always looking for opportunities. Do you have anything in Arizona?’ and I said, ‘I told you I would hire you, of course I have something in Arizona.’ The guy has been with me for 10 years. Q. What company successes are you most proud of? A. My biggest success is that in 2004, Inc. 500 magazine ranked my company as one of the fastest-growing companies in the United States. Why it ranked so significant with me is that if you looked at the list of the fastest growing companies in the Unites States, Go Daddy, which everyone knows Go Daddy, is below my company.
34
www.thecitymagazineelp.com
June, 2016 Q. What services did your company first provide? A. My very first contract was with the United States Forest Service and they continue to be a customer today. I love all my customers the same, they’re all great. I truly can’t rank them. I enjoy working with each and every one of my customers. Each one is unique and keep me motivated to do what I do. One day I could be talking about a weapons system and the next day I could be talking about a tortoise with the Forest Service. In this business I learn something every day, and it’s great, I love it. Q. If you could go back in time, what would you change, if anything, about METI? A. If I could go back in time, I would do it all exactly the same way, because the outcome is so good. Q. What is your favorite state? A. Texas! I love Texas. Q. Texas Rangers or Houston Astros? A. Man, why did you have to ask that one, that’s like the Cowboys or the Texans. I would go with the Rangers. There is no safe answer, but if I had to pick, I would go with the Rangers. Q. Coffee or Tea? A. If you would have asked me three years ago, it would have been coffee, now I am on to tea. In conclusion of the interview, I had asked him where he most enjoyed spending his leisure time. With not a thought at all, Mr. Johnson responded, “I enjoy spending time with my family,” and then he added to it, “the three F’s to live by … faith, family, and friends.”

June, 2016 and says they were “instrumental in getting him established.” In fact, Johnson says his move to the Coronado Tower, and later to the Mesa and Festival store, were made possible through the generosity of both his college friend, Bryan Hall, and Mack Massey of Mack Massey Motors. And his gratitude for El Paso is clear. Aside, from the myriad of charities that Johnson Jewelers supports like The Humane Society, the YWCA and The Center Against Sexual and Family Violence (CASFV), to name just a few, the jeweler has gone as far as to “adopt an elementary school,” literally providing them with a previously, non-existent art department through the donation of hundreds of art supplies. That school, Burleson Elementary, is an underprivileged one that, through the generosity of Johnson Jewelers, has enjoyed pizza parties for over 1,000 plus children, along with many other donations. Johnson, becoming teary-eyed as he recalls the experience, explains, “We always do this… always donating money to schools.” Regularly flooded with cards and letters of

thanks, Johnson has not only confirmed his love for the people of this city, but there are many who have grown to love him right back. “The trust is the biggest pat on the back,” he says in describing his 38-year long profession. The jeweler has proudly sold bridal sets to countless couples and later to their own children, indicative of that very level of trust. With no plans for retirement yet, the beloved jeweler intends only to continue traveling with his wife when he can, as well as enjoying time with his sons, Scot and Dustin, the latter of which has also taken an interest to the jewelry business. A true artisan, this man has dedicated nearly four decades to his

RICK CABRERA ABC-7 News Anchor Q: Despite being a busy News Anchor, you are known for helping and being involved in local charities. Tell us why it is important for you to give back in to the community in this way? A: I’m the father of two incredible kids and have always loved working with children. You’ll notice the charities I work with are focused on kids of all ages. I am a member of the Make-A-Wish and March of Dimes boards and on the advisory board for the Assistance League of El Paso. All three are doing some amazing work in our community and thankfully I have been blessed with a job where I can highlight these organizations and advocate for the people helping children overcome the obstacles in their lives. Q: Having been in local media for over 15 years, what differences do you see in El Paso from when you first started? A: When I arrived 17 years ago I was told to survive in El Paso you have to “get away” because El Paso doesn’t have all the things you’ll find in other cities. It was an absolute lie! It wasn’t true then and certainly isn’t true now. Sure there’s still room to grow, but El Paso is my home and definitely on the cusp of some amazing things. I feel like we are this hidden gem and eventually people will wake up to all the Sun City has to offer. I also think the quality of life here is underrated and has improved by leaps and bounds since I started calling El Paso home back in 1999.

Anytime Fitness El Paso Q: Fitness seems to be thriving in the El Paso area—what do you feel is making it such a hot industry to be in right now? A: Right now there’s such a stress on health and general longevity. People think that the point of the fitness center, or whatever it is, is going to make you healthier and now that it is being coupled with healthy eating options, things that have come to El Paso recently, it is kind of a combination of all those things that are really helpful. And now from our standpoint, in the industry, giving them a more convenient, cleaner, classier option brings a whole different realm of people to it, so it’s no longer that muscle-head gym that everyone feels like they’re going to. Q: Being an entrepreneur, are there any other business ventures in your future? A: Yes, we have a couple that we’re working on. I wish I could tell you what they were, and I would be happy to in a few months. My business partner and I are always looking for something cool to bring to El Paso. We also do properties—we’re building a 30,000 square foot strip center in Horizon City where we’re putting one of our new locations. When you’re an entrepreneur, you’re willing to jump into just about anything if you think it’s going to be cool, make some money, or just be fun to be in. So what I can say about the gym industry is that the fitness part is the most fun to be in because there are so many happy people. You’re helping them change something in a positive way and that’s really going to last— that’s the most fun by far.
Q: Being in the media world, specifically for broadcasting, you’re privy to news before the general public. Is it hard to keep it under wraps when it’s an exciting “big” story? A: Well of course it’s hard to keep under wraps, but you have to have integrity about your news product and make sure it’s done right so you can’t leak it. Q: If you could be doing anything else what would it be? A: Good question. What would I be doing? I haven’t thought about that. Probably digital entrepreneur.

and soccer.
A: I’ve recently come from California. I can answer that question genuinely very easily. What makes El Paso unique is a couple of things, and they go hand in hand. One is the concentration of very engaged, very skilled, civic and business leaders here. Combined with the fact that they work so collaboratively to make El Paso better. You go to any other major city, and of course they have talented people, but a lot are going in different directions. Here in El Paso, it’s large enough to have a significant number of talented leaders but it’s small enough that they are working together. Whether it’s an issue on education, civic development or economic development, everyone is working together. That almost has the feel of a smaller community. That’s fantastic! You can’t duplicate that.

Profiles In Business
Dr. Mitchell Farrell Leadership guru, John Maxwell, once said, “Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others.” Enter Dr. Mitchell Farrell, Medical Director at Summit Urgent Care Center. A Texas Tech University graduate who’s board certified in both Family and Emergency Medicine, Dr. Farrell together with wife and Summit Urgent Care Director, Jenny Farrell, led the way for their team of medical assistants to become fully trained and licensed in the aim of raising the quality standards of their practice. And who better to team up with in the endeavor than career-training leader itself, Western Tech, through the assistance of Gracie Olivas, their Customized Training Coordinator by way of its Radiography Non-Certified Technology program that in November of 2015 was still the only one in El Paso approved by the Texas Medical Board. Aside from Dr. Farrell and Summit Urgent Care’s monetary investment in the program was the profound time commitment by their staff, which required a total of 125 hours of courses ranging from safety compliance to body positioning per Texas Medical Board licensing requirements, and meant regular full Saturdays of training, in addition to scheduled shifts, over a 16-week period. (Not to mention, the dedication by Dr. Farrell and his team, including John Costa, Operations Manager, who helped coordinate schedule supervision, while continually overseeing day-to-day operations at Summit Urgent Care Center.) Thankfully, Western Tech’s flexibility in working around companies’ schedules across the board played a large role in their successful completion of the program. In fact, the college conveniently offers their Radiography NCT program and other medical training programs both on campus and on-site at companies they partner with. And their strenuous commitment has been worth every bit! The clinic just celebrated their 12th year in practice and with the tremendous expansion they’ve seen since opening their doors in March of 2004, Dr. Farrell and Jenny Farrell were astute in making this investment in their staff. Today, the locally-owned clinic is open daily from 8am – 8pm, including most holidays, and offers a wide array of medical treatments and services including in-house x-rays (the few that can), on-site lab work, and much more, but without the long hospital wait. The bottom-line: From a keen collaboration of true leaders in our community, rest-assured that in a sea of urgent care clinics in our area, the staff at Summit Urgent Care Center is fully-trained and certified by Western Tech’s unparalleled NCT program, and ready to provide the highest quality in care available in our city! 50 | SPECIAL ADVERTISING

Scott D. Asbury Experience goes hand in hand with the ability to keep learning and growing in whatever professional endeavor Scott Asbury chooses to take on. After being in the automotive business for 15 years – gaining immense and valuable customer service skills – Asbury decided to make the transition to operate a new Allstate location. This new challenge affords him the means to have more personable relationships with his clients and help more people save their hard-earned money.
The office is the only Allstate location in the Sunland area, and with proximity to New Mexico it is a good thing that they are licensed to serve both New Mexico and Texas. This allows Asbury and his team to extend their services to more people and make it easier for people to put their trust into Allstate. With all-inclusive packages, Allstate offers more than most insurance companies without having these services considered add-ons. Why spend more when you spend less and have more included in your plan? Let Asbury’s experience and knowledge lead the way to a more affordable insurance plan that you can feel good about.

Jose Pacifico Heras Originally from Juárez, México, El Taco Tote is a staple in the borderland for its authentic Mexican cuisine. Jose Pacifico Heras, owner, grew up in a food service environment, where he learned to cook and manage a restaurant, when he was 12 years old, at his father’s eatery in Sinaloa. Taco Tote was created when Mr. Heras noticed an opportunity to serve the borderland a traditional Mexican taco that had not yet been introduced to Northern Mexico. “Unlike many American perceptions, Tacos are not junk food, they are made with homemade tortillas and high quality meats like top sirloin and Arrachera.” Mr. Heras had a vision of serving traditional Mexican food with a simple American style and service. He imported high quality meats and created a fresh salsa bar and in October1988, Mr. Heras opened the first restaurant of its kind, with only four employees and a passion to provide the highest quality ingredients and authentic Mexican preparation. He made sure that every customer that left the restaurant was happy. The consistent quality of the salsas, tortillas, meat, and service is what set apart El Taco Tote from other restaurant chains. Edward La Puma After a 25-year career in food and beverage operations, Edward La Puma’s livelihood took an unlikely turn from hospitality and restaurants consulting, to construction consulting, and ultimately to stone countertops – opening 77 Stone in 2008. Ironically, the new venture was born during the worst economic time in the U.S. housing market. Persevering, La Puma focused on building a professional company that centered on retail clientele, remodeling contractors and commercial projects. He jokes that the name 77 Stone came from working 77 hours a week. Fast forward to the present, Edward has kept the emphasis on professionalism. From the showroom, to the shopping experience, to the design consultants, fabricators and installers – Edward’s adage is “Get the best value from the best company.” Not surprisingly, 77 Stone has grown to be the foremost countertop company in the region. With past and present projects for UTEP, El Paso Children’s Hospital, numerous Fort Bliss facilities, and the upcoming revitalization of the Speaking Rock Casino among others.

J.R. Phillips There is an extensive and remarkable story behind J.R. Phillips, now the man behind Adventure Zone. The most important thing to mention about Phillips, however, is that he is most proud of working with his family. He and his father moved to El Paso in 1969 (at which point Jim Phillips Sr. bought KHEY radio) and the start of a family environment commenced. For years, father and son lead different successful business ventures. “He believed, as do I, that you get back what you put in. This is one of the qualities that made him so special,” said Phillips. Before the opening of Adventure Zone, J.R Phillips created an extensive resume for himself. He worked at KTSM, was CEO of KSET FM, owned his own company (Magic Media) and purchased KOFX radio, creating El Paso’s first radio duopoly. However, the most important for Phillips is having been able to work with his father and now his own children. His son is his General Manager and “right-hand man” while his daughter also spent years working alongside her father. The blurred lines of business and family have been the most positive and educational work experience for Phillips – something we can find in Adventure Zone.

Austin Dunston Have any of us fully contemplated what our financial picture will look like at retirement? One of today’s biggest myths is that Texans can invest their way to financial security in retirement. This incomplete approach, focused only on stocks and investing, has created a gap that’s resulted in millions living with anxiety or a false sense of security. It’s critical for people to close the gap and build a full picture financial plan – one that integrates investments to grow wealth with risk protection products to help defend what matters most. When you replace vulnerability and doubt with confidence, that’s when you can live life differently. Austin Dunston, an El Paso-based financial representative at Northwestern Mutual is helping individuals, families and business owners build full picture financial plans and live life differently. Through Austin and Northwestern Mutual, clients are building and protecting their wealth from the major risks to retirement savings – market volatility, inflation and taxes, health care costs, long-term care costs and more. To start a full picture financial plan and learn more about Austin, visit www.austindunston.nm.com, call 915-842-8552 or visit his office at 5870 Onix Dr., Suite A, El Paso, Texas 79912. The prelude to his collegiate course of study was a high school project. He and a friend were tasked with inventing a useful device for a class. Upon querying local moms and homemakers, they quickly discovered many were suffering from burnt hands and fingers due to roasting chiles. “My friend and I manufactured this cylinder... a little chile roasting device, that we eventually sold in supermarkets in El Paso and New Mexico,” Garcia recounts. Upon graduating from high school, Garcia was accepted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he studied engineering and computer science. After college he ventured to New York and began work at a large Manhattan bank in a seemingly far

June, 2016 stretch from his engineer studies. However, as he explains, his chosen field has broad applications: “When I studied engineering I realized the most important thing I learned was how to analyze problems and solutions. As an engineer you’re prepared to work in any industry and solve problems. Finance was interesting to me because it presented a lot of challenges and problems that needed solutions. [I discovered] with the use of technology, you can solve these problems in a much faster way and on a larger scale. Each problem can be an opportunity.” In the true spirit of an engineer, Garcia took on the challenges and obstacles that are inherent in the personal investment world, and tackled them head on. After moving on to a smaller firm, he began to understand the risks involved in creating investment portfolios. Armed with the use of technology and innovative solutions, he was able to partner with two other engineers and create a company called Fundspire. “After my experience at a large bank I was able to discover a new opportunity, which was how do we make people understand the risk in a simpler way,” he said. Through the years at Fundspire and other endeavors, Garcia studied patterns of human behavior, particularly with regard to how people accumulate wealth and how people invest. Armed with this knowledge he was able to create models and technology platforms for investing. “When you’re talking about money, it’s delicate, like when you talk about health,” Garcia said. “There are a lot of regulations and security issues, so you need to be a really good engineer and a really good problem solver to understand everything that is affecting the challenge you’re trying to solve.” www.finhabits.com Visit FinHabit’s blog at: LaEsquina.finhabits.com

Plaid Squares come in all shapes and forms, but plaid during hot weather is usually not ideal. When we think of plaid we think of fleece, chilly weather and a good ol’ pumpkin spiced latte. Save the plaid for your picnic tables and for Christmas, and opt for a bold pattern or bright colors for summer.
Joggers This style of pants has been used and abused. We’re over it. Get some chinos, jeans, shorts … anything but joggers (unless you’re going to quickly buy some milk at Walmart).

In honor of Father’s Day, we are paying tribute to dads, particularly those of the animal kingdom. At first
glance, many people think orangutan dads are not as important. Orangutans are very nurturing with their babies; they have strong motherly instincts, and are known for being great mommies.

While Ibu was first to touch Butch when they were first introduced through mesh, he was first to physically connect to her as they are reintroduced as parents. Ibu rested her fingers through the mesh, reaching toward Butch. He responded by gently resting his mouth to her hands. They stayed connected for a moment. Orangutans are also a bit unusual among primates because they are semi-solitary – this means they spend most of their time alone, rather than in large groups like gorillas and chimpanzees. Here at the zoo we try to manage our orangutans similar to how they would live in the wild – we let them spend time alone, and some time together, always acting in the best interest of the individual animals. In the wild, the father would not be a caretaker nor have any part in raising an infant

orangutan. Some orangutans have been an exception to this rule, playing with and looking after babies. As the introduction process continues, the orangutans grow closer - and get closer to being on exhibit together. When Khaleesi is ready, the zoo’s animal care staff will go through a very carefully detailed and planned process, because we need to make sure that all goes well and prevent any injury to Khaleesi. First, Khaleesi needs to be mature enough to be independent away from mom. Then, introductions will begin through the same partition they communicate through now. Over time, they’ll spend more time together, interacting and communicating, before having full physical contact. Likewise, the animal care staff will have new baby proofing to do to the orangutan’s home as they prepare to be a family together. If you’re lucky enough to spend today with your dad, make the most of it (shameless plug here – why not take him to the zoo?). And if you’re not one of those lucky ones, then take a minute to appreciate the good fathers you know – both the human and non-human varieties.

Memorial Day, which ends the month of May and moves us right into the days of June, is the beginning of the official kick-off of our adventurous summertime outdoor days. Smells of our smoky scented grills launch us into the official season for our backyard barbecue festivities where friends and family gather around and enjoy the sights and sounds of summer.
t’s a time to stock up on healthy, mouthwatering grass-fed and organic meats and the freshest wild caught seafood for summertime gatherings. Barbecue-ready wild caught Atlantic salmon, Alaskan Halibut and many more cold-water fish are my go-to choices for a popular cuisine. Opening our summer barbeque extravaganza, I have invited my incredible taste testers: J.E (Henry) Payan, Rick Kelly, Davidson Smith, Brian Stickney, and Jaime and Elisa Gandara to join me in enjoying a fantastic home-cooked meal. Barbecue Grass-Fed Sirloin Steak Serves: 4-6 Ingredients: 4-6 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inch boneless rib eye or New York strip steaks (about 12 oz. each) or filets mignons (8-10 oz. each, trimmed) 2 tbsp. of virgin olive oil Sea-salt, cracked black pepper to taste Directions: If you choose to marinate your steak you may consider using one of the following: Bourbon, beer or apple cider vinegar. I prefer Braggs apple cider vinegar for its tenderness. About 20 minutes before grilling, remove the steaks from the refrigerator and let sit covered at room temperature. Heat the grill on high. Brush the steaks on both sides with oil, which prevents drying and sticking of the meat on the grill. Season salt and pepper to taste. Grill the steaks until golden brown about 4-5 minutes. Turn steaks over and continue to grill 3-5 minutes for medium-rare, 5-7 minutes for medium, 8-10 minutes for medium-well. The biggest culprit for grass fed beef is overcooking. Rare-medium is the best way to eat grass fed beef. If you

prefer your meat well done, just place it on the part of the grill that is not too hot and let it cook a bit longer, but be careful not to cook too long or it will make the steaks tough due to less fat since they are grass fed. Transfer the steaks to a serving platter, tent loosely with tin foil or parchment paper and let stand about 5 minutes. You may slice the steaks for your own preference.

Husk Barbeque Corn on the Cob Serving: 4-6 Ingredients: 4-6 ears sweet organic corn (in husks) Sea Salt and cracked black pepper to taste Olive Oil (organic if possible) Directions: Peel back the cornhusk from the cob, but do not remove it where it attaches to the bottom of the cob. Rinse the corn under cool water and clean off the strings that are around the corn. For tastier corn, rub olive oil on the cob and season with salt and pepper. Fold the husk around the cob covering the corn and twist the tops of the husk tightly so that the corn is covered. Soak the prepared corncobs in water for about 10-15 minutes. Shake the water from the corncobs and place on the grill. Turn the cobs with tongs every 5 minutes to cook evenly. Cooking time is about 25-40 minutes or until the kernels are tender. Transfer to a platter and let cool and serve.

Attention Gentlemen
Etiquette
| By: JOANN WARDY | A reader recently had the opportunity of going out with a very attractive wealthy man. He invited her for dinner. They had great conversation and a very enjoyable evening. At the end of the date, when they both went to pick up their cars, which were in valet parking, her date asked if she wouldn’t mind giving the attendant his ticket. He said he’d be right back. It was raining very hard and when he returned the valet had brought his car first. Her date told her he had a great evening, kissed her good night, got into his car and drove off leaving her alone to wait. Now here is what should have happened. He waits until her car arrives, just seconds away. He sees her to her car and follows her home to make sure she arrives safely. It was only two minutes away. Quite a disappointing ending to a great date. Remember … it’s the little things that count. One spring morning, back in 1980,

a 7-year-old boy named Christopher
received an unexpected phone call. It
was a local law enforcement officer.
“Chris, how would you like to take a ride in a real police helicopter?”
Chris was ecstatic. He had been battling leukemia—and the battle was not going well.
For Chris, who loved police officers, getting to be a “policeman for a day” was his greatest wish. Thanks to the generosity of a few local officers, his wish was granted. Sadly, Chris passed away not too long after that special day, but his story lives on. To honor Chris’ legacy, and to help other children battling life-threatening conditions, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which has granted 350,000 wishes to date, was founded. World Wish Day, a global celebration of wish granting, was celebrated once again on Friday, April 29. The day also marks the anniversary of Chris’ police adventure. In El Paso, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of North Texas, recognized the day with service, expressions of gratitude and, of course, some very special wishes for children living with lifethreatening medical conditions. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

The Rules of
Tricks of the trade from In our fast-paced, social media savvy age, it’s my duty as a business owner and blogger to constantly study and stay current on the happenings in the fashion industry, trends and new fashion lines. This season, my research led to some especially interesting fashion-related tips and tricks, which I’m happy to share here:
1
When purchasing denim, there are facts and benefits to consider before selecting the perfect pair of pants. A “forever piece” is your best bet, as it transcends seasons and trends and can be styled multiple ways.
The recommended style is a “skinny boyfriend”. Why? Because this jean can be worn multiple ways. Not only is it comfortable for the thighs, but it elongates the body and you can roll up the cuff two inches to give it a chic, yet casual look. Cuff it or wear it long to make the jeans cool for summer and transition it to winter. Not too light and not too dark, a medium tone works all year round.

No longer do you have to view a shirtdress as a conservative “dress,” but rather as an outer piece, the ideal layering item. Sport your shirtdress with a tank and some jeans for a pulled-together dressed
down look. Another fun option when rocking a shirtdress is to wear it with a

A GuysOnly Vacation June, 2016
| By: KRYSTA AYERS |
Planning trips with the family, your
girlfriend, or wife may be fun, but sometimes you just need a little guy-time out of town and away from the everyday stresses. Though it’s good to have a guy’s night out in town sometimes, you and your best bros need to get out of town and explore together. Take a trip this summer to attend a music festival, take an epic road trip, camp and hike in luscious green spaces, or get drunk doing a beer tour. Honestly, as long as you have your closest bros around and some good food and drinks your vacation will be a good one. 110

Drink a Little, Drink a Lot Beer is great. It’s even better when you’re with the guys getting a tour of the place it was brewed in. Pile into a car and road trip over to Dallas and experience any of their multiple beer tours – Lakewood Brewing Co. and Deep Ellum Brewing Co. are some good ones to check out. If you’re looking for something outside of Texas, then you should definitely travel out to Portland, Oregon. With 84 breweries in the Portland metro area, the only hard thing will be narrowing down your options. Make sure to include the Portland BrewBus though – four hours, 20 different breweries and no driving! www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Soak in the Music

June, 2016
Music festivals are popping up all over the place and it’s a great way to spend the weekend. In June there’s Bonnaroo in Tennessee where this year you can hear the sounds of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Band of Horses and more while camping out. If you’re into DJ sets, you can check out EDC in Las Vegas and come alive with the electric music. Lollapalooza happens late July in Chicago and there’s always Austin City Limits during the first weekends of October. Music festivals have even become a popular bachelor party destination. Whichever you choose, drink up, take in as much live music as you can and navigate the crowd with your best dudes.

Take a road trip on the Pacific Coast Highway. There’s really no better way to see so many sights along the Pacific Coast than doing this drive. Spanning a total of 1,700 miles, from Olympia, Washington to Los Angles, California, you can drive the entire way or choose your end point. Some of your major stopping points should include The Oregon ne National Recreational Area, which hosts the largest expanse of sand dunes; Northern California’s Redwood National Park and Humboldt Redwoods State Park to see the massive redwood trees and for a hiking opportunity; if you’ve never driven across the Golden Gate Bridge, this would be your opportune moment; Big Sur hosts the most dramatic coastline in California; and make sure to stop in small towns along the way to explore tiny diners and local stores – you never know what you’ll find!

Camp Out
If spending a weekend outdoors is more your speed, then you should definitely take a trip to the Gila National Forest in New Mexico. Just a short drive over,
this campsite will offer lush forests and lakes, unlike the desert camping you can find in Texas. There are also different options, just in case you have a friend who is not down to completely “rough it. From low to high elevation, lakeside to forested, and primitive to developed, you can pick a spot to set up camp and enjoy fishing, hiking and being out in the wilderness.

PET OF THE
MONTH
TOGETHER, THEY LOVE TO TAKE LONG RIDES IN MEYER’S 1953 CHEVROLET PICK-UP TRUCK. TCM Pet of the Month highlights our readers’ best friends!
“Riley”
Owner: Meyer Marcus “Meet Riley. Riley’s life revolves around her Papa, Meyer. Riley wakes up every morning with Meyer, helps him get ready for work and then stares at the garage door as he leaves. She then goes back to wake up her mom and sits in front of the fireplace that’s been turned on for her until mom is up. Then she follows her mama around the house, or stares out the front door, waiting until it’s time for her Papa to come home. Once Papa gets home, it’s all fun and games. Together, they love to take long rides in Meyer’s 1953 Chevrolet pick-up truck, take really exciting walks on the river, go to Starbucks, go to the dog park, and so much more. Riley spends the rest of the day staring at her Papa and following his every move… and he does the same with her. The two are inseparable and have a bond unlike anything else. Riley loves to lie on the couch next to Meyer, and if someone is in her spot, he has no shame in asking them to move for her! She is so loyal to him and brings an irreplaceable amount of joy and happiness to his life. Without each other, they would be lost! Happy Father’s day, and birthday, to Riley (and Bayla’s) favorite person in the world. We love you, Papa!” Is your pet TCM’s next Pet of the Month? Starting a family involves a lot of exciting decisions! Choosing your baby’s name, picking a great school district, decorating the nursery and so much more. But in many cases, people are so busy with their new family, they tend to forget about one of the most significant decisions for their child’s future and that is college! Because of escalating tuition prices that only seem to get higher every year, it is critical for parents to start saving for college as soon as possible after their baby is born. Without an early start and a focused financial plan, many people are forced to make unnecessary sacrifices to fund their child’s education after high school. Sometimes parents face this challenge, but often, and even worse, it is their children who carry the heavy burden of college debt. The good news is, both of these scenarios can be avoided. The more time you allow yourself to build the fund, the less impact those deposits will have on your day-to-day lifestyle. ‘Baby steps’ are what it’s all about because you have plenty of other money matters on your plate, so why wait? Whether you choose to take advantage of IRA’s, Educational Savings Plans or the Texas 529 College Savings Plan, I’m here to help you to develop a customized strategy that works with your unique set of circumstances and ensures that your child’s educational needs are properly met. Getting ready for college, preparing for retirement, establishing your financial safety net, protecting you family with life insurance too … it’s all part of your unique financial plan. Finding the right balance isn’t easy but putting a plan into action and finding peace of mind is exactly what O’Neill Financial Planning can help you do.
The (529) Texas College Savings Plan (www.texascollegesavingsplan.com) • Earnings in this plan grow federal income tax free for the life of the account. • You may withdraw funds, federal tax free, as long as they’re used for qualified higher education expenses. When used for other purposes, the earnings portion of the withdrawal is subject to federal income taxes, applicable state tax and an additional 10% federal tax penalty. • You can use a 529 for qualified higher education expenses at most accredited U.S. institutions, including vocational schools, two and four year college and graduate schools, as well as some foreign institutions. • Because the 529 account is in your name, you retain control over when and how savings are used, when and how much to contribute, and when to make withdrawals. • You may change beneficiaries among qualified family members without penalty or tax implications. • The Texas College Savings Plan offers numerous investment portfolios based on risk tolerance, time horizon and financial situation. 120
