his month the magazine is all about celebrating our local heroes, animals that we can’t live without and El Paso’s attorneys. Something about the presence of an animal in the room brings my stress level down two notches. When tensions run high—which means we’re right on deadline and ads are missing—I’m known to walk in with one of my three furry friends on a leash. I need their calmness, their distraction and mostly their love when a tough day awaits me. Such is the reason that Paws for Love, a nonprofit organization that provides pet therapy, was founded. Founder Carmen witnessed how the elderly in a nursing facility responded when she walked in accompanied by a furry friend. This group started 21 years ago and their story can be found on page 16. The old adage that the best time to talk to a lawyer is when you don’t actually need one is so true. Not every legal matter requires the use of an attorney, but you might find yourself at a disadvantage if you are alone trying to go up against an attorney representing the other side. In fact, while good legal representation may not be cheap, it can help get you out of a number of sticky situations such as a bad divorce (is there ever a good one?), car accident, setting up trusts, or heaven forbid, a DUI violation. Lawyers play an important role providing justice to the people in our society, and hopefully ensure that everyone has fair and equal rights. Though we hope you never need an attorney, chances are you will. When choosing one, our El Paso attorneys would like you to know the importance of choosing local. Attorneys who commonly work El Paso know the other attorneys personally, making contact and negotiations faster and easier on your attorney billing. They know the judges, their personalities, and their past rulings. If experts are needed in your case, local attorneys know the go-to, thus potentially saving you money in the long run. Obviously, if your case can’t be settled out of court and it requires days in front of a judge or jury, a local attorney saves you travel expenses or per diems required. Again, saving you your hard-earned money. Yes, it’s about time. Flip the magazine over and enjoy our “After 50” (I hate the word senior…) magazine. I’m so excited that our dear friend Alicia Ward (Director of Membership, El Paso Chamber) allowed us in her personal world. She celebrated her 25th anniversary of a successful kidney transplant and though that is a celebration on its own, she celebrated it with her donor—her son Walter. Just ask her about the special bond between the mother and son, she’ll sit you down and the story will begin (see page 44). Spend some downtime with your furry friends, celebrate life with family, and though I hope your next phone call isn’t to an attorney, we’ve showcased those who walk the streets with each of us. Cheers to spring,

a nonprofit organization that is taking it a step further by providing pet therapy for those in need. Paws for Love was founded a little more than 21 years ago when one of the

founders, Carmen, decided to go to an elderly nursing facility with her dog. Carmen quickly realized how pleased the residents became with her furry companion, especially those who never had visitors, and continued visiting the facility with her dog. Eventually, she got together with two other original founders, Marcia Wessberg and Carolyn Williams, to do some team research on pet therapy. Despite criticism from those who were suspicious about this unique treatment at the time, the three women eventually found the help they needed from Pet Partners, which supports organizations like Paws for Love, by registering pet therapy animals and providing insurance for the program. Together, Paws for Love and Pet Partners have succeeded in their mission to give the gift of love and healing. Today, Carol Douglass is the senior evaluator and coordinator at Paws for Love and echoes Carmen’s story of how the pets of Paws for Love have continuously been there for the elderly. She says they make visits to facilities, such as The Legacy at Cimarron, to visit those who either have no visitors or are in need of a little pick-me-up. Carol says that visiting the elderly sparks unforgettable joy and hope in them after feeling lonely or recovering from painful surgeries.

Photo by: Jenn Márquez Some other unique benefits of pet therapy have been seen in their visits to places like The El Paso Children’s Hospital and local schools where they provide their program, “Reading Education Assistance Dogs” (R.E.AD.). “Sometimes a child in a behavioral center won’t talk to a therapist but they will talk to the dog … or students will have difficulty reading and would rather read to a pet because they won’t judge them,” Carol explains. Carol also makes it clear www.thecitymagazineelp.com

ristina was Arturo Garcia’s beloved nana. Growing up in Juárez under Cristina’s care, Arturo and his siblings came to see her as a second mother. Years later, Arturo and Cristina both immigrated to the United States independently of each other. Cristina landed in Los Angeles and Arturo crossed over to El Paso. In a tragic turn of events, Arturo, by this point married and expecting

his second child, would discover that Cristina had died, slain by an abusive husband. Arturo and his wife decided to honor Cristina’s legacy by giving her name to their first born daughter—although they added an H out of reverence for their new country’s Anglo tradition. For much of her younger years, that story wouldn’t hold much significance for Christina Garcia. Kids are kids after all, and they rarely spend much time thinking of people they’ve never met. What’s more, the environment she grew up in didn’t lend itself to reflection—it was a struggle just to get by. Still about a decade off from being named the nation’s safest city, El Paso in the 1990s had its fair share of

an internship at the Las Americas Immigration Advocacy Center. The work enthralled her, and she was good at it. As luck would have it, just as Christina was getting ready to graduate, a position opened up at Las Americas. As the Crime Victim Program director, Christina would be tasked with helping some of the center’s most vulnerable clients: undocumented victims of crimes, many of them women who’d suffered domestic abuse. Specifically, she would obtain them residency through the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), a federal law that offers protection to such women, no matter their immigration status. At first, Christina poured all of her energy into learning the ins and outs of our legal system, figuring that residency would solve her clients’ problems. Along the way, however, she realized that permission to stay in the country was only the beginning. Having suffered unimaginable trauma and usually still living in precarious circumstances, these women, and often their children, need help healing and finding safe new homes. To that end, Christina’s learned to play social worker, supporting her clients in almost every facet of their lives. “These days I don’t want to be a legal hero, I want to be the person you remember for holding your hand during a difficult time,” she told me while reflecting on her evolution in community service. “Yeah, estoy bien encariñada with my clients,” she added. Still just in her mid-30s, Christina plans on going back to school to get a masters in social work but isn’t exactly sure where her career will go from there. “There are so many people who need help, so I know I need to stay here and work in the community ... but I’m not sure if that will be in immigration or elsewhere,” she told me. Christina is certain about one plan, however. She wants to go to California to meet Cristina’s children. She wants them to know that she’s working hard to save women just like their mother.

Chuck Ruhmann Chuck Ruhmann opened his practice for one reason: To help people. Specifically, help the injured victims that have suffered losses due to another’s negligence or gross negligence by making sure the at-fault party pays for the harms they cause. People need lawyers like the Ruhmann Law Firm to fight their cases. Unfortunately for individuals that do not seek and attain representation for their claims, the Insurance companies can and do take advantage of them. Due to almost bottomless pockets of money and teams of agents and lawyers defending the company’s own interests, the injured find themselves caught in the insurance company’s web of downplaying the severity of their injuries or attempting to put responsibility on the victim by spinning the facts. Even with a seemingly rock-solid case, few individuals are capable of navigating the nebulous adversarial system of civil litigation on their own. The injured victim needs an experienced and knowledgeable trial lawyer if they are going to stand a chance in their claim or in court. Luckily, Chuck and his team are here to help. Chuck and his team are dedicated to their clients. With the exception of the time he spends with his family, Chuck is always working to achieve the best result for his clients. It makes perfect sense when you think about it. The plaintiffs’ lives are often thrown into complete disarray by car wrecks. In addition to their losing their physical well-being, they face at times a seemingly insurmountable amount of debt brought on by endless medical bills or expenses. Unable to bear the thought of such outcomes, Chuck and his team are constantly working to make sure that does not happen. He and his team work directly with each client throughout the case. They go above and beyond to ensure full transparency, making themselves available for questions, client needs or reaching out with regular updates. After all, the case is about the client, not the lawyer. “If you or a loved one have been injured, call Chuck.”

John Lomax Anderson In 2015 alone, there were more than 3,800 deaths reported nationwide in truck accidents. The vast majority of the deceased were occupants of personal vehicles, not the trucks. Tragically, the victims, or the victims’ loved ones, are too often unable to obtain the compensation they deserve. The trucking companies are prepared for such accidents with advanced legal teams that specialize in minimizing losses.

Ruben Ortiz Ruben Ortiz still remembers his first case. It was 1998 and the young attorney had just returned home after graduating from the Washburn University of Law in Topeka, Kansas. The county court appointed him to represent a mother who was accused of a probation violation. Ruben was unfamiliar with how cases in the criminal arena were handled then, but the court’s coordinator made it clear what was expected in such cases: The client would plead true, no questions asked. Ruben didn’t like the idea of four children losing their mother into the system, so despite only being paid $75, he continued to fight for his client for over a year, and eventually got it dismissed. 20 years later and now an expert in criminal law, personal injury law and family law, Ruben still approaches every case with the same tenacity and expectation. He does whatever it takes to give his client a win, without compromise. It’s a lot of work but Ruben relishes the opportunity he’s had to serve the community that

El Paso has a magnetic energy to it. Nora Artalejo felt that pull and used it to fuel a career in law. Her time in the Big Apple inserted lessons into her life that carried over into how she approaches her practice. “I take a no nonsense approach with my clients. According to Luis, “the cool part is that we’re committed to helping them fulfill their mission.” And now, the employees provide priceless hours of manpower as they help with the stocking of the food pantry and the distribution of items on the last Saturday of each month. While Stephen is excited about the financial contributions, he adds that the volunteer hours they get from the FYZICAL staff helps with the 6080 veteran households that benefit from VNP. He emphasized his appreciation saying, “It’s been a godsend, to have people help do what we do … lots of hands make for easy work!”

March, 2019 The VNP is open daily, Monday through Saturday. Although Mondays and Saturdays are for distribution only, from 10:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m., the rest of the week they are open 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The center is closed on Sundays. The commitment and the dedication of Luis and his staff is unwavering and their vision for this partnership is expanding. Not only are they volunteering on weekends, but there are events in the works to increase awareness of the VNP, as well as fundraisers to support the services that Stephen and his staff provide. Look for an exciting, first-of-its-kind event coming this October. For now, they can only reveal that there will be a treadmill, a rooftop and high profile El Pasoans creating awareness and raising money to help the veterans of this region. The partnership between the two groups has evolved into a very special relationship. As Luis states, “Veterans and wellness go hand in hand. Find both Veterans Non Profit and FYZICAL Therapy Balance & Hand Centers on Facebook.

here’s nothing quite like seeing a child’s smile after they’ve had to face hardships that are unimaginable for someone so young. Oftentimes, adults even become stressed trying to bring joy to a child when they can’t afford much. Movies4Kids is trying to ease those worries by giving children a one-of-akind experience by taking them to exclusive redcarpet premieres to catch a film before anyone else has gotten the chance to. Rene Herrera, cofounder of Movies4Kids, talks about how the program began in 2016 when he and his partner, Ricardo Anzures, bought out a movie theater and decided to let less fortunate children get first dibs on seats. After seeing the children’s faces light up with joy, the two partners became inspired to continue giving back to children in the El Paso community. When asked why they only took the kids to movies, Rene explained that although there are other outlets such as music, the children gain a new perception with the visuals and storylines that some of the movies have. They also get to be in a new environment and interact with other children, and more importantly, they get a chance to be normal kids having fun. But recently the dream of continuing to make children happy has become a bit more difficult for the organizers. Movies4Kids is supported by a couple of private donors and otherwise gets most of their donations from monthly contributors. “You multiply the average costs [and it] is about 15 to 17 dollars per child and we try to take about 300 children to a movie every month, but there’s some months where we have two movies,” says Rene. Because of the way movies make a profit, theaters aren’t allowed to give any type of donations to Movies4Kids. For these reasons the price can interfere with whether or not the kids will be able to go to a screening. Rene states that the best way for people to support Movies4Kids is by becoming a monthly donor for just 50 cents a day, which will sponsor one child each month.

To help support Movies4Kids go to movies4kids.org or find them on Facebook.

he idea of trash to treasure is not a new one, but what started as a proposal for a competition has turned into

something that is so much more. The It’s Your

World Project is a student club under the supervision of art teacher, Candie Printz. The club was born from

the passion and promotion of the arts along with raising awareness about the pollution issues in our city. The students participate in highway cleanups and host free workshops for the community. These workshops cover recycling and ways to convert trash into unique art pieces. “It’s amazing that this is run by high school students,” says Candie.

The It’s Your World Project is hosting its third “Metamorphosis:

Trash to Treasure” recycled art contest and exhibition this

coming April. The call to artists is currently underway and the submission window is now open to El Paso, Juárez and Las Cruces. The contest is all inclusive and artists of all ages and abilities are encouraged to participate.

There is no size or weight limit to the work you can submit. The only requirements are to fill out an online form and submit a photo of the work which must incorporate recycled items. The hope is that while in the process of creating, people become aware of the overproduction of things like plastic and become more active in recycling. The exhibition and reception to celebrate the artist and their entries will be held at the International Museum of Art, Saturday, April 27 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. In years past, “The Metamorphosis: Trash to Treasure” contest has received over 1500 submissions, given out $4,000 in awards, donated to other non-profits who offer their assistance, and even had Chelsea Clinton in attendance. The It’s Your World Project has also grown and recently established a nonprofit organization, The Green Hope Project; founded by graduate students, community members, and formerly a part of the It’s Your World Project. While both the school club and non-profit share similar goals, The Green Hope has a higher aim that is more in line with what can be accomplished outside of the education system. “I want El Paso to be a home base and set an example for the rest of the state … the next step is to get engineers and scientists involved to expand on the possibilities,” Candie says. Be a part of conveying a meaningful message and help make a positive change in our city! you go? There’s a litany of great spots, but a few stand out as especially rad. The region’s best known off-roading destination is known as Red Sands and lies just beyond Hueco Tanks. As its name suggests, the 21-square mile plot is full of sweeping red-sand dunes, the leftovers of a foregone sea that dried up some 31

million years ago. Beyond their sheer beauty, the ancient slopes make an ideal playground for all-terrain enthusiasts. The deep, powdery earth eats up even the biggest tires, and the steep hills promise daredevils plenty of opportunities to catch serious air. Despite offering many challenges, the site also has its fair share of easy riding, perfect for novices who just want to enjoy the scenery without worrying about trashing their rides. What’s more, even if you don’t own an off-road vehicle, Rent An ATV is right at the dunes’ entrance and stays open until sundown.

colors, most complete with aftermarket suspension kits, monster tires and even roaring mufflers. The abundance of such vehicles would seem to evidence a lively off-roading community, however a number of industry experts assure me that this simply is not the case. Alejandra Maldonado, who runs Dirt Logics with her three brothers, claims that few of the shop’s clients have any intention of ever heading off pavement. Most do it just for show. It’s a shame that so many all-terrain hot rods go essentially unused. After all, 4x4s give us the ability to explore parts of the desert we otherwise couldn’t, and, not unimportantly, it’s really fun to kick up dust

and roll over rocks. Anthony Vella, an El Paso transplant who off-roads and 66 paramotors regularly, stresses that most of the region’s backroads don’t require especially fancy vehicles, any old SUV or pickup will do. But where exactly should

Just a few miles southwest of the dunes, sits a sprawling web of trails known as the SAC (named after the neighboring Socorro Student Activity Center). Here the terrain is flat and the soil hard packed, offering a distinctly different experience to Red Sands. The relatively straightforward paths mean drivers can be more liberal with the accelerator, sliding through turns and zipping over moguls. Of course, if you’re not in a high velocity mood, there’s no rule against slow cruising through the Chihuahuan desert. The Wall, located in Santa Teresa, NM, is a favorite among El Paso offroaders. The name is a bit misleading—it’s really more like a big, half-open dirt bowl. Starting at the bottom, visitors attempt to make it to the very top of the long, bending ridge. The climb’s difficulty depends entirely on the path you choose, ranging from novice to nearly impossible. Due to the steep ascents and many boulders, it’s highly suggested that you go with more than one

vehicle and take shackles and straps in case you get stuck or, god forbid, flip. In the end, however, it doesn’t matter where exactly you go or how you get there, as long as you make it outside. “The desert is so amazing, it’s really unfortunate that more people don’t take advantage of it, whether it be in their trucks, on bike, or by foot,” says Anthony Vella, reflecting on the profound impact the Chihuahuan has had on his life. Anybody interested in experiencing El Paso’s outdoors, he added, shouldn’t hesitate to www.thecitymagazineelp.com reach out to him through his instagram–@anthonykvella–for tips, directions, or even paramotor lessons.

Suni has quite the track record as a siamang mommy, having already successfully raised two of her own, including one who still lives with her, Adinda. Since Deja is so young, the El Paso Zoo zookeepers are showing her the ropes on what it takes to be a siamang. They are teaching her how to swing, how to climb and everything else siamangs do. Hopefully, this experience will ease Deja’s transition into life in her new surroundings with her new foster mother. Deja is set to make her debut on exhibit during spring break. Speaking of spring break ... what better way to spend that time off than at the El Paso Zoo! There will be plenty of animal enrichment activities—the splash pad will be open, and for that short amount of time, The Birdman will return to El Paso with his world-famous condors. This spring break should be especially exciting thanks to the El Paso Zoo’s Valentine’s Day promotion “Quit Bugging Me.” Fans sent in their exes’ names to be featured on a cockroach. Then on Valentine’s Day, some of the El Paso Zoo’s animals were fed a giant helping of those cockroaches as a treat in honor of all the broken hearted. This event made international headlines for the zoo and El Paso. Publications from all over the world featured the story, such as BBC London, National Public Radio, CBS News and even Saturday Night Live where they poked fun at the pettiness of the event. Over 6,000 names were submitted and the El Paso Zoological Society received over $3,000 in donations. We can definitely expect more creative promotions like this in the coming year.

here’s no limit on what we’re willing to do for our furry friends. Now with the debarkation of pet tech products, it makes it that much easier to be present pet parents even when we’re away. Whether it be to help your pet live a more active, healthier life or to simply give yourself some peace of mind while you’re away, there is a pet product for you. Leaving our pets unsupervised fills us with a feeling of uncertainty. Luckily there exists a multitude of pet cameras to suit every need. Having a user-friendly camera allows you to check in on your pet anytime, anywhere … all you need is the corresponding app. You’ll be alerted when your pet is in view and whether you want to partake in a little play time with a built-in laser, or engage in a video chat is up to you! Don’t forget, with the press of a button a treat can be distributed to your loving pet. Products like PetCube, PetChatz, and Petzi all allow for this type of interaction.

Bad weather doesn’t just affect your home, it affects your business, too.

March, 2019 If an interactive product isn’t necessary when it comes to keeping an eye on your pet, then maybe a GPS device is all you need. It’s a small device that attaches directly to your pet’s collar and connects with a mobile app to track your pet’s activity. You are able to set a safe zone and are alerted if they are breached, as well as being kept up to date on the pet’s whereabouts. Let’s be thankful for products like Whistle, Tagg, and Wagz. Now if you have an animal that you allow to roam, Eyenimal Videocam may be the product for you. Without all the bells and whistles of the aforementioned pet cameras, this cam also clips to the pet’s collar and lets you know what your pet is up to while getting a pet’s perspective so to speak. The only downside is that it has a battery life of only four hours. We all know a healthy pet is a happy pet, and

there is plenty of technology to help make that possible. From scheduled feedings to purified water and activity focused products, your needs are covered. Smart Pet Feeders are ideal for managing feeding times and controlling portion size, not to mention the ease of use. It takes away the stress of worrying if you’ll be home in time to feed your pet—without just leaving a full food bowl out all day. This goes hand in hand with the following product which is a pet fountain. Perfect for pets of all sizes, it aerates the water with oxygen and also uses filters for a long lasting fresh taste. To keep up with a pet’s required exercise, there are products like iFetch which is an automatic ball launcher. Tired of manually throwing the ball? No problem. Pebby is also an automated ball that uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology for endless hours of playtime. Whether you’re controlling it from your phone or your pet’s smart collar, it’s sure to be a pet pleaser.

any people who go into weight-lifting start training their gluteus muscles in order to firm and tighten that backside. You may see many people on social media or Pinterest doing “squat challenges” or really heavy squats, but is that really the best way to get a nice butt? The current Pantone Color of the Year 2019 is Living Coral 16-1546. Pantone calls it “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.” This hue is perfect for makeup because it is universally flattering on lips, nails, eyes and cheeks. It’s the perfect color between orange and pink, looks great on most skin tones, and is easy to wear. You can choose to highlight one of your features in this beautiful coral color or do a monochromatic look by using the same or similar shades on your eyes, cheeks, lips and nails.

Here are some of my favorite makeup products in this year’s color trend. Blush Glossier Cloud Paint in shade Dawn. “If you can finger paint, you can Cloud Paint—simply dab it onto cheeks. It’s seamless, sheer, and buildable.” www.glossier.com

Lip Color Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution in Shade Sexy Sienna. “Gives you a moisturized, yet matte finish for a modern twist to your lip makeup.” www.charlottetilbury.com

Lip & Eye Liner Make Up For Ever Artist Color Pencil in shade Whichever Coral. “A powerfully pigmented, creamy matte pencil that glides on smoothly and blends seamlessly.” www. makeupforever.com

Eye Shadow Nars Cosmetics Duo Eyeshadow in shade St Paul de Vence. “A collection of duo eyeshadows in a new formula that deliver high-impact color in a single stroke.” www. narscosmetics.com

Nail Color Zoya in shade Cora. “Can best be described as a muted coral cream.” www.zoya.com

1 Mario Badescu | Control Moisturizer for Oily Skin The plight of the oily-skinned continues, how do we find a moisturizer that doesn’t make us look like we waded through an oil slick? In all honesty, stop whining. As annoying as oily skin might seem, it’s keeping your skin from Sahara-deserting on you, and keeping early signs of aging at bay. What you want to look for is a moisturizer that doesn’t work against your natural oil production and won’t clog your pores to create a breeding ground for bacteria under your skin. Mario Badescu’s fast-absorbing formula with Glycerin and vitamin B-5 sends hydration deep into your skin without disrupting it or throwing it off balance.

$18 | mariobadescu.com

2 Le Labo | Coffee Body Scrub I’ve encountered two types of body washes and scrubs. Some tend to be abrasive and drying to the skin and usually requires you to heavily moisturize after a shower, while others are too oily and leave an uncomfortable residue on the skin. For this, a more natural and simple approach might be the solution. Fine coffee grounds blended with sunflower oil gently exfoliate and hydrate your skin for a soft and smooth feel. The scrub also leaves a faint scent of fresh coffee which is sure to brighten up your energy and mood. Sure it might be a bit messy, but we survived the activated charcoal takeover of 2017.

3 Kiehls | Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil Herbal Concentrate As the name suggests, this concentrate soothes and relaxes the skin and any feeling of irritation by promoting quick healing. This facial oil maintains moisture levels in the skin balanced throughout the day. This oil also works as a quick fix to reduce redness while gently working to relieve the discomfort of those with blemishprone skin. Watch as your complexion evens out and feels better than ever before.

$49 | kiehls.com

4 Hanz De Fuko | Modify Pomade Enough with the helmet-hard hairstyles out there that flake with a single gist of wind. Sleek hairstyles tend to lose their pristine appearance quite easily when molded with a drying hairstyling product. Still interested in a classic hairstyle with great hold? This pomade gives you the look of a slicked back, high-shine style while still managing to stay lightweight and easy to wash off.

here are some scars too deep and vivid to hide. Sometimes the best you can do is honor them by paying homage to how and why they happened and what you learned from the blow.

In August 2001, I stood before the Monument to Peace in Coventry Cathedral and read the words “Lord, Let us Forgive” hung above a roughly hewn cross created from the metal shards of shells that bombed that church during World War II. Around me lay the ruins of the original church built by historic nobility … its scorched walls and eerily empty window frames, broken bricks and blasted towers … remnants of terrifying times. But I also witnessed something else that day. Something which I have never forgotten. Because standing next to the old cathedral is the new one and it is filled with a spirit of

forgiveness and hope for humankind that is so powerful—it’s worth getting on a plane and flying all the way to England to experience. The new Coventry Cathedral opened in 1962. Since then, it has welcomed thousands of visitors who come to feel the sense of peace and reconciliation embodied by the startling study in contrast that exists there. Angela Barden remembers the day she attended the opening ceremony: ”As a schoolchild I went, along with many other children, to the consecration of Coventry Cathedral. I still remember it so well, so I must have felt that it was a very important occasion. I still have the bookmark we were all given that day. On the reverse of the bookmark it says ‘Given to the children as a memento of the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral, 25 May, 1962.’ I did not want to lose it, it was precious to me so I scrawled ‘DO NOT TOUCH, THIS IS MINE’

AGUA DE A

guas (or “waters”) are a special thing in Mexican culture. They come in a ton of different flavors

MELON

and everyone has their favorite spot to get them. I’m here to provide a solid recipe

that you can use time and time again. You can change the fruit and make this into any combination of good flavors, but let’s start with the basics. Today we’re using cantaloupe. It’s a classic flavor that’s neutral, subtly sweet, but refreshing and filling. We can bounce around on the amount of sugar you put in this depending on the taste, so start small and add more as you develop your personal preference. Cantaloupe is one of my favorite fruits and it’s easy to pick a good one. If it smells sweet, full and fresh… then it usually is. You can thump it and

Chef’s tip

| By: JESSE MAYNES |

press it, but go by the smell, it’s tried and true. Some blended sweet cantaloupe, a hint of lime, and a shot of milk (at least that’s how I grew up with it) will change up the game when aiming for a cold drink on a warm day.

Like it with pulp? Blend the seeds and membrane for extra body in your agua.

1 cantaloupe 1/4-1/2 cup sugar 1 medium lime 1 cup water Ice, for serving

optional

1.

Whole milk, 1 ounce per serving

Begin by peeling the cantaloupe. Cut off the melon’s top and bottom ends so it stands upright and flat. Cut the skin off in strips, making sure to keep the knife snug against the fruit. Take off the green area and leave all of the orange meat as possible.

2.

Once peeled, cut into two-inch chunks, removing any seeds or core. Add to blender.

3.

Add one cup water, sugar depending on taste, lime juice and blend until smooth.

4.

Strain cantaloupe mixture into a pitcher. Using a spatula, push through any remaining mixture. Do this in batches so it’s manageable, let chill.

5.

Stir agua before serving, pour over ice. Top with a shot of milk (optional).
