May, 2016 Oprah Winfrey said it well when she said, “We’re all on a hero’s journey.” We fall down, we get back up. Who’s the person who decides we don’t get another chance? Recently, I was sitting at the office with some of my female coworkers talking about the

multiple roles we play in our daily lives. Most of us have jobs outside of the home, many of us are either wives or in a relationship, mothers and caretakers of our parents. One thing among women that is universal is that we are commonly torn between job descriptions. We are constantly taking care of everyone, and more often than not, the day ends with little left for ourselves. We find ourselves exhausted, empty, much like a cup that starts out full and suddenly turns dry. The dry cup is what happens when we don’t find time to refill. When we’re dry we have nothing left to give. For centuries, women like Elizabeth Blackwell and Betty Friedan have pioneered feminist movements about equality in both professional and domestic roles. “The Second Shift” — a term established by sociologist, Arlie Hochschild in 1989, refers to the disproportionate amount of unpaid domestic labor women do in addition to their paid jobs. Women need real moments of solitude and self-reflection to balance out how much of ourselves we give away. An earlier version of me would have worked until my cup was dry. I’ve since learned to give myself a drink; in order to take care of the people around me, I need to take care of myself first. That leads me to the very important and influential women that are in our city today. TIME Magazine has recognized one of those women and put her on their list of 100 Most Influential People, alongside politicians and royalty. This would be none other than our longtime UTEP President, Dr. Diana Natalicio. I recently watched a humble Dr. Natalicio being interviewed about this recognition and was astounded by her responses of “we” and “us.” She never once talked about herself or her success, only of her team’s success at UTEP. I admired this about her immensely and when she said, “When you’re successful, your appetite for more grows” it resonated with me. It’s in good timing that we publish our Women in Business issue as Dr. Natalicio, a proud leader in our city, gets recognized nationwide. Speaking of leaders, our cover story includes the tenacious Keitha Adams, the UTEP head women’s basketball coach. I learned so much from her and about her during our time together. The impression I got of the woman I saw on the court was that of a woman who is fierce, competitive and driven – never taking her eyes off of her goal. What I found after hours at the photo shoot was a woman who is sensitive, kind, authentic and playful. She spoke tenderly about the love she has for her late father and how valuable her time spent with her mother is. She gives every bit of credit of her success to them. I asked her, in all the years of dealing with young ladies how she kept drama under control. She said to me something I will never forget. She stated that she doesn’t bring women on her team who don’t have the same goals she has. On one side of them is a trophy and on the other is an education, and they all strive 100% for both of those goals. When your players are that driven, and that focused, there is little time for nonsense. Henceforth, I am taking that advice from the court to forever use in my business. Cheers to the ladies whose cups runneth dry and cheers as we commit to refill together!

When asked about her keys to success, her response was immediate. “A strong desire, I’m very competitive. I hate to lose. I don’t do very well with it. I was very fortunate to have a great coach as my teacher. I had some great experiences and learning from some great coaches.” Adams says she’s always loved sports and had a great experience playing, especially basketball. A native of Oxford, Kansas, Adams was Oxford High School’s all-time leading scorer and earned all-state honors as a prep. Her jersey was retired in 1986. Her career decision came easy. “I knew at a young age that I wanted to teach and coach. I can’t tell you when I made that decision, but I always knew that’s what I was supposed to be doing in life.” Adams says she feels most at home on the basketball court and really enjoys teaching the game. “I’ve worked really hard through the years to be a good teacher and I’ve picked a lot of people’s brains and tried to study the game.” Stull agrees. “She’s a coaches’ coach, she really relates well to other coaches and works with them.” Stull remembers Coach Adams spending time learning from NCAA Championship Coach Don Haskins and seeking advice from current UTEP Men’s basketball coach, Tim Floyd. Her calculated collaboration is working. Adams led UTEP to its third regular season C-USA championship in school history, and this season picked up her third C-USA Coach of the Year award becoming the first coach in C-USA women’s basketball history to secure the honor three times. “I was very honored to receive recognition and it’s a reflection of all the players, coaches and all the hard work.” The accolades also rolled in for many of her players. She finds rewards in her players’ success. “It’s a great feeling when you see your players hoisting a trophy or cutting down a net; being in 26

the locker room and you’ve just won a big road game and they’re going nuts and they’re very happy about what they’ve just done - that’s a great feeling as a coach.” Success on the basketball court is only one part of Adams’s coaching philosophy. More importantly,

academics.
Every student-athlete who has exhausted her eligibility with Adams has earned a degree. She has also aided in the development of the student-athletes with “real life” through her mentoring program, now implemented across the athletics department. When asked who her role models were Adams looks to her parents and her high school friends. “All those made me who I am today and who I try to be with the kids I coach.” It isn’t all basketball all the time for the coach. She balances her athletic side with a love for music and guitar. She plays guitar often and takes lessons to sharpen her skills. “I really started playing when I lost my dad,” she says with a smile. “I’ve never wanted to play until he passed away because he was a really good guitar player. This is my connection with my dad.” She enjoys all genres of music, but has a favorite in Country music with Vince Gil. The basketball season just ended, but there is little rest. Coach Adams and her team will work through the summer to engage and incorporate newcomers, set new individual goals and make team plans for the season ahead. As she looks www.thecitymagazineelp.com

e’ve all seen the loveable, beaming logo that adorns Charlotte’s Home Furnishings delivery trucks. Known as the “Tall Girl,” the caricature is the likeness of
Charlotte’s owner, Melissa O’Rourke. She has been
the proprietress of the iconic furniture store for the
past three decades. Involved mostly in the marketing and merchandising aspect of the family business, O’Rourke continues to push the envelope in terms of styles, designs, quality and pricing. She explains the foundation upon which this El Paso mainstay rests: “Quality and design have always been a priority, and I think Charlotte’s is as relevant today as when we started in 1951. The reason for that is because we’re always changing and evolving as fashions and trends and products [change]. We’ve also broadened our price points; we have a lot of product that’s mid-price range; people think of us as a real high-end store, but we really are very popularly priced and that’s something we’ll continue to do.” Charlotte’s opened its doors over 60 years ago in central El Paso on Raynolds Street. Charlotte Williams, O’Rourke’s mother, and the originator of the store, saw an opportunity to help offset the lack of furniture store choices for those with more discerning and scrupulous tastes. “In 1951 my mother opened Charlotte’s,” O’Rourke said. “She really loved home furnishings and there really wasn’t a store that had nice, selective items, so she gradually started bringing in items and created the store.” Charlotte’s prides itself on being a veritable one-stop-shop, providing a complete home furnishing package. From furniture, to flooring, lighting, and adornment,
the

carries a wide variety of choices. A team of highly experienced interior designers and decorators make up part of the Charlotte’s contingent. Along with Charlotte’s employees, the company also contracts a team of flooring installers. The store also boasts a bridal registry and gift shop. O’Rourke acknowledges the prices of home furnishings have remained relatively static throughout the years and that probably accounts for the steady stream of loyal Charlotte’s customers, as well as some new faces.

May, 2016 “Through the years we’ve seen a lot of the same customers, but we regularly get new customers as well.” While there are a number of male-dominated industries, particularly in the areas of manufacturing, mechanics, and engineering, O’Rourke says she feels the area of retail has a significant amount of female representation, thus lessening the obstacles that could be present in a more male-fronted area. She does cite, however, the majority of vendors she deals with are men: “We’ve always been woman-owned. I think in retail it’s not unusual for a lot of businesses to be woman-owned, and I think that’s been the case for a long, long time. What’s interesting though is in the manufacturing part, a lot of our vendors, now that’s a very male-dominated industry.” In 30 years of running a successful business, O’Rourke attests to a few essential elements. She said a sound business plan, a practical, workable budget and marketing are the keys to a prosperous company and healthy gains. Charlotte O’Rourke, Melissa’s daughter, will take on her mother’s position at the helm of the store one day. While the timeline for Charlotte to move into the leadership role is flexible, she has already begun to familiarize

herself with the different positions and functions of the store’s employees. “We all sat down one day and I asked [each employee] ‘Who else knows how to do what you do?’ Most of them said ‘Well, nobody,’” she laughs. “I’m going to learn how to do everything at this store.” After attending UT Austin and receiving a Bachelor of Arts in corporate communication,

“It’s not at all what I wanted to do,” she says. “But I applied for the job and ended up running the store for six or seven years.” After her stint at the Ethan Allen store, Charlotte became a certified teacher, received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and worked as an emergency room and hospice nurse. In dealing with different issues and obstacles at her various jobs, Charlotte says she was a natural leader, often unofficially nominated to be the “voice of reason” in dealings with management. For Charlotte, the tendency toward a leadership role crystallized during her time at a local Alzheimer’s facility: “Suddenly

It was there that a friend offhandedly remarked ‘How are you going to be able to let this all go?’ “I had never really thought about the store closing and my friend said ‘Your mom’s not going to work here forever,’” she said. That comment sparked the realization in Charlotte that she had to put forth an effort to ensure the store would not close its doors. She had also worked as the director at a local Alzheimer’s facility; it is her experience in different industries and handling different obstacles within various companies which she explains, helped groom her for the role she will eventually take on at Charlotte’s. “It’s scary to have all that responsibility, but I’m not afraid to take on the challenge, and I know we can get through anything,”

Work Wisdom Three top tips from The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce CEO Cindy Ramos-Davidson: The biggest challenge business leaders face as they’re starting their business is wanting to do everything right away and not taking the time to complete their business plan with attainable goals and measurements for success. All too often we see so many exciting ideas for businesses only to have them jump faster than they have planned and then they fail. A heart break after they have invested a lot of time, resources and talent that could otherwise have been developed into a success had they just followed a few simple rules of business ownership which I call PAN Principle, like Peter Pan: Prioritize: Customer acquisition should be your first priority. Never chase the money first. If you build the right foundation with a solid business plan, get the right people in place and create great products and services, the money will come. Adapt: Never limit yourself to just one version of your plan. Be adaptable because life changes on a dime. Business owners have to be ready to shift at any given time. If you’re too rigid in your plans, you could end up failing. Be flexible enough to change. A set back doesn’t mean “no,” it means “not right now” or “not this way.” Network: Especially with doers. Never hang around people who refuse to move forward. Align yourself with visionaries and game changers who are about forward movement. They are always mindful that what got them here won’t get them there. Establish a likeable bond with the use of social media. Surround yourself with a power network of people you can leverage and with whom you can return the favor. A true business network consists of people you can give to and receive from where everybody is a winner. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Ruth Elizondo A native of Progreso, Hidalgo in Central Mexico, Ruth Elizondo moved to the borderland city of Juárez, Mexico and eventually to El Paso, the city that’s now become her home. Her calling is everything tax and business consulting; a pathway she embarked upon as a double major at UTEP where she received both a BBA in Accounting and a Master of Accountancy (MACC) in 1999 and 2002 respectively. Her tax preparation skills developed early while attending college, and led her up the higher echelons to working as a Controller for a restaurant, an experience that subsequently counts as one of her many areas of expertise. Eventually, she honed her accounting skills and pursued a CPA as “the next step in continuing to advance” within her profession, which paved the way for her penchant for public accounting that together with her partner, Reymundo Cardenas, culminates in the highly skilled Cardenas & Elizondo, LLC, accounting and taxation consulting practice. Whether it’s corporations, partnerships or individuals, Elizondo is a tax pro who just recently celebrated her 17th tax season because she knows how to successfully consult and, ultimately, foster growth and development for the companies she represents. Of particular importance to Elizondo and the firm, is their ability to serve our community’s demographic. The CPA proudly explains, “We created a niche that [provides] services to Hispanics” in an area where international commerce is prevalent and where bilingualism is key. As a native of Mexico, this female tax pro can better serve the companies doing business along our border because she relates to the culture, and often the complexities, that surround foreign commerce in our region. The firm’s core services are, therefore, largely based in international taxation and consulting with an emphasis on educating businesses on proper US tax reporting. In fact, Elizondo is one of few who can expertly deal with the reporting requirements of FATCA (Foreign Accounting Tax Compliance Act) that if not properly adhered to, can cost businesses and even individuals, up to $10K in IRS penalties. From providing educative seminars to being heavily involved with professional organizations like the Young CPA’s, where she’s served as President and as the only female panel expert for the 2016 CPAs on Call, Elizondo’s agenda for “helping our community,” while actively mentoring those in her field, proves that she enhances not only the livelihood of the clients she works for, but that of our city across the board! EMAJJ Often confused as simply an events promoter or marketing agency, one learns rather quickly that there is much more at work behind the four-woman team of EMAJJ. Led by Creative Director, Gracie Cain, and Operations Director and partner, Maria Ortiz, they’re not only quite the savvy marketeers, they’re also some of the keenest strategists around. Add to the force, Jackie Cain, Business Manager and go-to person, along with Ileana Diaz in Promotions, and you have a powerhouse of women who thrive on making vision into reality. Founded nearly five years ago, EMAJJ was built heavily on the impressive broadcasting background that Gracie Cain accumulated through her earlier experiences at Telemundo, a role that began in sales and eventually grew into that of interview host of her own “Remix TV” show; later at KTSM Channel 9 as initially an intern and later as a news and traffic reporter; and through a notable stint with MTV Latino. Her time in media soon led her into the realm of real estate, the latter of which she claims “helped her build her company” in terms of her knack for everything planning and strategy. And here’s where promotions and marketing aside, although a major aspect, is not all there is to EMAJJ. Maria Elena Carmona and Mariana Prado Maria Elena “Helen” Carmona has been the Chief Executive Officer of Highlands Rehabilitation Hospital for three years now. She is in charge of the overall company culture and implementing the strategic vision while taking responsibility for the hospital’s performance. She has been a part of Highlands for over 12 years, where she successfully climbed the corporate ladder, as she was initially a nurse supervisor, then Chief Nursing Officer before getting promoted to CEO three years ago. This experience is what makes the administrative part

of the hospital seamlessly interconnected with every department. “What works for Highlands is that it’s a cohesive unit. There’s compassion starting from administration and continues through every department. I’m able to work with our staff, and because I’ve been a nurse for 44 years here in El Paso, I understand what the needs are of the community we are fortunate to serve,” says Carmona. This specialized hospital is able to serve children, adolescents and adults with a variety of rehabilitation needs with a specialized focus in neurological rehabilitation that includes brain injuries and strokes. Carmona speaks highly and passionately about the specialized physicians that are highly qualified in their field of physical medicine, that are vital to the success of Highlands. “[I’ve worked] mostly all aspects of nursing, but working with rehabilitation where you get to see a person go home with abilities that they didn’t have before is very gratifying,” adds Carmona about the experience. Mariana Prado, who has a Bachelor’s degree from Baylor University and is working on her Executive MBA at UTEP, moved back to El Paso five years ago in order to reintegrate herself into the community that she grew up in. Also a registered nurse, with a keen talent for business development, Prado is able to direct the strategic marketing operations, while remaining compassionate and understanding of all aspects of the hospital. Prado and Carmona work very well together, combining years of experience with progressive ideas that are important and “essential for growth in health care in helping our community continue to succeed and progress.” Prado’s passion for helping others and self-motivation have put her in the perfect position to move El Paso forward and make a difference in the community. She is a new member of Progress 321, sits on the board for the Alzheimer’s Association and is a member of the YWCA Women’s Luncheon Committee – fully involved in the city and the advances being made. These women propel El Paso forward in the health care world. “Being women in business is meaningful. We have many responsibilities, but our main focus is to make a difference in our patients’ lives and in our community. With the right frame of mind and heartfelt handwork, success follows,” says Prado. Karla Mariscal It has taken 17 years to transform Karla Mariscal from a humble scriptwriter at a television station across the border in Mexico, into one of the most beloved female news anchors of El Paso, Ciudad Juárez and Las Cruces. Winner of three Lone Star Emmys, including ‘Outstanding News Anchor in Texas,’ a first for a local anchor, Mariscal is now making a mark as a News Anchor for Telemundo 48. Originally from Juárez, Mariscal has spent the majority of her professional life in our Sun City out of a desire to inform and educate a community she genuinely cares for. Following her start at Televisa Juárez as a scriptwriter and reporter, Mariscal joined Univision as a news anchor and, eventually, became Executive Producer. After taking a year off from her professional life, she joined Telemundo 48 to lead its weekly newscast. Mariscal is one of El Paso’s most admired news anchors. A bona fide role model for Hispanics, her vision is to show the community that “we can do something meaningful right here in our city. Our borderplex is truly an amazing place,” Mariscal concludes. Last year Telemundo 48 brought in to the borderland two more Emmys and with Mariscal ‘in the picture,’ we expect more to come! 60 | SPECIAL ADVERTISING

Shannon Sawyer As a licensed professional counselor, Shannon Sawyer wants to open a candid discussion on mental health issues. Her business, Sawyer Behavioral Health offers an array of services for both children and adults in the community. “Mental well-being equates to overall wellness. If we don’t take care of our brains, our brains aren’t going to take care of our bodies,” Sawyer says. “The dialogue on these issues is more open than before, but it’s not where it should be.” She explains that she’s observed some cultures shying away from important mental health issues, and she hopes to change that mindset. Her goals include forming a network of professionals to offer more resources to help clients. If you’re struggling with behavioral health issues, Sawyer emphasizes, it’s important to find someone in whom to confide. “Reach out to the mental health community,” she advises. “We’re here to help. We’re a safe place for individuals.” Although the clinic opened its doors only 11 months ago, Sawyer has already had to hire a second therapist and hopes to continue to hire more staff. “There are always opportunities to help and improve quality of life for others. We are honored to be a resource for the community and humbled to see the growth of Sawyer Behavioral Health.”

Often times, people also recognize her work and request that she paint a significant place to them. One of her paintings is of Maynard Haddad’s business, H&H Carwash and Coffee Shop, a local legend that has been featured on CBS’ “Early Show” and visited by the Bush family. Pat mentions that Laura Bush even has one of her paintings of the business. She has also created paintings of some well-known haunted places throughout the city including: Kiki’s Mexican Restaurant, the Long Term Acute Care center, formerly known as Southwestern General Hospital featured on the popular television show, “Ghost Hunters,” and Concordia Cemetery, home of the popular story of the spirit of John Wesley Hardin, an infamous outlaw and gunfighter, still wreaking havoc on his burial grounds. She’s also painted Chope’s Bar & Café, the L&J café and Chico’s Tacos. Her favorite piece of artwork, an acrylic canvas portraying a “mermaid fairy,” hangs above her kitchen table, which she believes could have been inspired by a dream she had. “People create art for many reasons,” she remarks. “In my case sometimes I just want to tell a story about something that interests me or a curiosity I have, record a dream, relax, and lose track of time. Sometimes, a delicious meal and company is the greatest gift. Make a brunch date with mom at 150 Sunset for the
ultimate Mother’s Day meal. Plus, the restaurant and nursery boats an exquisite outdoor patio and unique plants and flowers. Take it from me, 150 Sunset makes the best French toast in town and for much less than $100, you can dine in the lap of luxury.

Pamper your mom and treat her to a blow dry at Dry: a Blow Dry Bar. With two convenient locations, it’s the best place to
start your mother’s special day. Mom will be looking and feeling great after a blow out, and you can keep the feeling alive with exclusive products like Davines and Kevyn Aucoin. For only $85, your mom can get the whole works, a blowout and makeup application to look and feel just as beautiful as she is.

Another jewelry option for the fabulous mother in your life is a Pandora bracelet from the local store, Vanities. With tons of options, and a wide variety of
charms to choose from, this can be a piece of jewelry that you can easily personalize. Offering a Mother’s Day gift set at $195, this can turn into something you add onto every year with new charms that fit perfectly with your mom’s personal style.

ecently I was invited to Feng Shui the stunning home of Tommy Chong of Cheech and Chong fame. I knew his Los Angeles neighborhood, Pacific Palisades was full of movie stars and I expected his home to be gorgeous. But I didn’t expect to stumble upon a goddess.
I never saw any Cheech and Chong movies so I had no preconceived image of Tommy Chong. I found him to be not only strikingly handsome but one of the kindest and gentle-natured men I have ever met. He seemed more like a sage than a pot-promoting comedian. His eyes reminded me of the old barn door: flecks of deep brown married with lighter hues, so much strength remaining despite the years of weathering, and they held an insurmountable depth that dared to drown anyone that met his gaze. I spent time with Tommy talking about his childhood, his career, his health and his vision for the next stage of his life. And then I was introduced to his wife of 40 years, Shelby. Shelby is a dancer, a seamstress, and an artist and her eyes look as if she used ten shades of blue paint to achieve the striking crystal clear blue color. They don’t capture light; they defy it, embellishing her petite features. Even at 68 no one could possibly outshine her. Five foot seven, flowing golden curls, flawless ivory skin with a willowy walk she had a face cut right from the pages of a men’s magazine. I thought to myself, if goddesses are real, then this woman is their masterpiece. She was all about simplicity, making things easy, helping those around her to relax and

nown as the first Hispanic female flight director for NASA’s flight operations and assistant directorate for ISS, Ginger Kerrick has always dreamed of working for NASA since the age of five.
“My dad took me to the library and I found a book on astronauts and astronomy and I knew that’s what I wanted to be,” said Kerrick. With an ambition to become an astronaut, she went on to excel in math, science and sports. However, her dad’s death took an emotional toll on her when she was only 11 years old. Kerrick remembers, “My mom was very helpful in making sure that I understood that if I wanted to become an astronaut I would have to study math and science, so she got me involved in pursuing that very early.” She excelled academically and even became known as El Paso’s “Female Athlete of the Year,” where she was offered many scholarships to play basketball in different colleges across the country including UTEP, where she decided to stay. Kerrick eventually went on to finish college at Texas Tech, where she experienced being away from home for the first time. However, getting there was no easy task. After injuring herself, she was no longer able to play basketball and a few of her scholarships were even pulled away and she found herself struggling to pay for tuition. Because of this, Kerrick had to work three part time jobs just to stay afloat. She soon graduated with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in

How smart is your home? □
Do your lights come on when you return home?

If you answered yes to fewer than 2 of these questions, your home is ready to become smarter.

“I think people sell themselves short, but if your interested in something, approach it with a positive perspective and go for it. You’ll figure out how to make it all work,” said Kerrick. Later this fall, Kerrick does plan on visiting the Sun City as the grand marshall for this year’s Thanksgiving Day parade. In the meantime, she continues to travel giving public speeches inspiring Hispanics, women and minorities in the STEM fields. “If you’re approaching things intimidated by the fact that you’re the only Hispanic or the only female in the class, then you’re already setting yourself up for failure because you’re comparing yourself to somebody else,” warns Kerrick. “But if you don’t even think about the fact that you are the only Hispanic, or the only woman in that field, and you go from the perspective that its going to be fun, then it will be fun.”

What time is it? Never miss another appointment by always staring at your chic and modern wrist-watch. We all know that buying an expensive watch at the jeweler might be easier (and more expensive) but today there’s a bunch of brands that offer a sleek and fashionable wrist-watch for a really fair price. For a day, change the seriousness of a leather or metal wristband for a colorful one, or one that has a wooden texture.
Tropical Breeze With spring in full bloom, everyone takes out the floral prints. But what happens when over-the-top florals aren’t for you, but you still enjoy a nice print? Why not go with a tropical print? You’ll get the hipness of a floral print (but with palm trees, leaves and a few birds here and there) but without you worrying looking like your grandma. You can find these prints in every hue you can imagine, neon, pastels, over black or white.
Friends and Food There is nothing nicer than a good time with friends. Hosting a dinner party is always a task that some people might not be down for, but the rewards are always gratifying. Cook a succulent dinner, followed (or started) by some drinks, make a friend bring dessert, and another one bring some board games. Why not make it a monthly thing with people rotating hosting at their house? Stay away from spending a ton of money on going out to dinner and then a bar – make it cozy and homier.

seem to never end? Well, this is advice for you to tell that annoying snapchatter to stop doing that. No one really wants to see a night out at the bars in a bunch of clipped videos that last around 120 seconds … that’s two minutes! We don’t even want to see celebrities act dumb for that long. Go out, have fun, but please don’t make a movie out of it. (We don’t do that! So follow us at TheCityMagazine.)
Lace up blouses We’ve seen them, those blouses that have what seems to be a shoelace going up the cleavage. Honestly, they’re not cute and if they’re not styled right they tend to look a little cheap. Free your cleavage from that laced cage and let them enjoy the spring weather!
Hot in the front, cold in the back Ankle sandals are the ugliest addition in the footwear world. Who needs to have their ankles covered up, but their toes totally exposed? No one. Get some real sandals, or if your ankles are cold, get some freaking booties. The mullet of sandals needs to go away.

What a dinner it was! Unforgettable to those invited, but also to the White House staff who couldn’t get people to sit down! It was like a family union with so many El Paso ties. People saw each other for the first time in years and took pictures of their surroundings. My mom, Betty Wakefield Haley, saw Jean and Ben Collins, across the street neighbors when we both lived on Mississippi Street, a block from Madeline Park. Ben was the Athletic Director who hired Coach Haskins in 1961. They laughed when recounting my call to the Collins’ home, telling them to reserve the date. Ben’s response was unexcitable, ‘Oh, Adair, I don’t know … I like staying home in my house shoes,’ unlike Jean who called back within minutes, saying, ‘Don’t you dare listen to a word Ben says!’ The night at the White House she commanded the conversation at her table in the State Dining Room, with guests Togo Railey; Assistant Athletic Director, Jim Bowden; Philanthropist J.O. Steward; UTEP African American Studies Professor, Maceo

Orange baby roses shaped like basketballs were at the center of the 11 tables with real nets, their rims wrapped in ivy. The White House florist, Nancy Clarke, outdid herself for the UTEP Miners. At each place was a goldrimmed charger, the White House at its center, with a linen napkin and menu laid on top. The meal included the best beef Dee Margo had ever eaten - Beef Short Ribs with Achiote Rub, served with Grilled Vegetables and Chipotle Potato Gratin. A finger bowl served between the spinach salad and chocolate and caramel Ancho Pepper tart put quizzical looks on some faces. Ben Collins said that Laura Bush jokingly lifted hers at their table as if to take a sip while smiling at someone across the room. She also suggested to those at her table to pass their menus around for everyone to sign, an idea copied by other guests. Maynard Haddad - owner of H&H carwash where Mrs. Bush eats huevos rancheros when she visits El Paso – still has

his menu signed by President Bush hanging over the formica tables at 700 E. Yandell. The Air Force chorale entertained with songs from “Glory Road” after dessert. Willie Cager yelled out “Sing it girl!” when the soloist sang a rousing Rhythm and Blues. Nevil Shed got up to dance, ignoring his wife, Melba, whose gesticulations for him to SIT DOWN took on a rhythm of their own. Nevil lifted his glass to Bobby Joe Hill, with everyone responding “To Bobby Joe.” A portrait of Abraham Lincoln hanging over the fireplace looked down on us all. When the President got up to excuse himself, explaining his day would start the next morning at 4:30 a.m., Maynard Haddad got up, too, saying, “Before you leave, Mr. President, I just have to hug you.” For months following the event, Maynard’s eyes welled up with tears when he talked about his evening at the White House. “Where but in the United States would the son of a Syrian immigrant be invited to sit at the President’s table?” he asked. Then he added wistfully, “I wish everyone could experience the love in that man.”

Girls just wanna have fun…and a girls-only vacation. Since May is our women’s issue, what better travel guidance to give than something you and the girls can get together for to celebrate being a woman? Add some Shania Twain to your vacation playlist and mentally prepare yourself for that much needed girl time. With the weather being just right almost anywhere would be a good vacation area. Let me narrow it down for you, though.
For the Sight-Seers
New York, New York The Big Apple, The City That Never Sleeps… New York City, with its lights and fashion and 100 miles per hour mentality. A girl’s trip to the city means delicious plates of food, hours of walking and lots of sightseeing. Tour the Statue of Liberty, go up to the top of the Empire State Building, go to the 9/11 Memorial; there’s a lot of options here. For the avid photographer, the streets of New York City make for a great photograph. And for the art lover, NYC is home to famous museums as well as being home to some of the greatest architecture.

For the Thrill-Seekers
Big Bend Ranch State Park, Texas If you’re more on the adventurous side, I deeply urge you to do a girl’s trip to Big Bend Ranch State Park. Known as the “Other Side of Nowhere”, not only are the views absolutely gorgeous, but there are so many things to do. You can hike along the mountain trials, camp for a few days and star-gaze in one of the most popular places, raft down the Rio Grande, or even take a little swim in the river. It’ll be just you, your girls and the open desert. Picture perfect, it’s the best place to get some adventure and distance yourself from media and the outside world.

For the Wine Enthusiasts
Napa Valley, California Aside from Italy, Napa Valley is up there on the list when it comes to wines. It might be a little overwhelming, the amount of wineries and wine tours you can take, but just relax and have a glass of wine. You can enjoy dinner and wine on a restored train at Napa Valley Wine Train, or look into wine tours at Beringer Vineyards, where the views are breathtaking, or Starmont Winery, where you’ll drink at the historic Stanly Ranch. Vacation time with the girls is all about letting loose and what better way to do so than with wine? Don’t forget to download the Uber app, though!

For the Overworked
Ojo Caliente, New Mexico Only have a couple of days to vacation? Just 50 miles outside Sante Fe is Ojo Caliente, New Mexico, where Mineral Springs Resort is the perfect place to relax. You can soak in private pools, enjoy some spa treatments and engage in girl talk while being in an oasis. Since the spring is iron-based, it’s considered to be beneficial to the blood and immune system. Take the weekend to soak up, drink some wine with the girls and unwind before you have to return to reality.
