U

nlike a Rolling Stones or Cosmopolitan celebrity article, I can’t write about what Khalid was wearing when he walked into the doors of some cool local coffee shop for our interview. It is through the speaker of my cell phone

that this new voice in the music industry comes in from Los Angeles. A

2016 graduate of Americas High School, 18-year-old Khalid (Kuh-leed) has taken his musical talent to L.A. soon after his song “Location” became popular through social media. Popular on the scale of having Kylie Jenner play his song on her Snapchat, and thousands of followers claiming “Location” as their favorite song. When I first looked up “Location” on Spotify, it had close to 10,000 plays. Now, in early October, it has reached 12 million plays. Taking into consideration that his stardom began after posting songs onto the popular music site, SoundCloud, that is a lot of plays, and certainly enough to get him recognized. Not only has the local community taken notice of his talent, strangers on the Internet and notable producers have also listened and aided in his growth. Khalid has already been featured on several Apple Music playlists, HotNewHipHop.com, The Fader, NPR Music and many other music sites. His sound defies and challenges being categorized into one genre. In his own words he says, “It’s mood music. It affects how you feel. [There’s influence] from American Folk, electronic, R&B, it’s genre-fluid.” And I agree. Play “Location” or “Let’s Go” or the first one he posted, “Would You”, and you’ll find the same to be true. The young singer/songwriter takes his personal experiences and transforms them into relatable, inspired songs with smooth and soulful vocals.

November, 2016 When he first posted “Would You” Khalid says he linked it on Twitter and told followers to “listen if they wanted to.” He laughs as he remembers and adds, “ I was super nervous to put the song up. It was a personal experience and it was just music therapy.” Classmates listened. And they took note. Though the “most popular guy in school” didn’t like his song, he had the rest of Americas High School bobbing their heads and encouraging his work. Growing up in a military family, he has lived in other cities (and even abroad, in Germany)

– but he proudly claims El Paso as his home. Deciding between staying in New York or moving with his family to El Paso, he says, “I put my family first,” and made the move to the desert. And it was a great decision. “My family has been super supportive,” he tells me when I ask how they have reacted to his move to L.A and his rapid rise to fame.

November, 2016 He tells me that his mom is a singer in the military and that in some way, it’s like he gets to live out her dream. He also tells me that she is like a second manager to him – a “momager.” Khalid is special in the way of being able to reach such a broad audience. With the help of social media, he has made fans from all around the world, from Kylie Jenner in Calif. to people in Switzerland. “[Kylie Jenner] was a special moment. After that, [the song] skyrocketed,” he says, sounding in shock still. He mostly praises El Paso and the people who live here, though. “El Paso has been one of the most supportive cities.” He adds, “El Paso is a very beautiful place. There are so many scenic spots.” He then tells me

November, 2016 “I wouldn’t say I was prepared. It’s such a new process for me. I just accepted it, no looking back on it,” he says about his career starting to take off. When he started working on “Location,” which is the biggest and most popular song he has out right now, it was an organic and very natural process that started in Atlanta, Ga. Him and his team of notable producers created a chorus before Khalid took the song back to El Paso. The producers on this song are Syk Sense, who has produced Drake and Bryson Tiller; Tunji Ige, a rapper and producer; and Smash David, who has produced Jason Derulo and Jeremih. With lyrics like, “Initially/I didn’t wanna fall but you/Gather my attention/it was all for you,” the young artist uses his smooth vocals to sing the words that many have related to and talked about. When I asked him how it feels to be on the same playlists as famous artists such as

28

www.thecitymagazineelp.com

November, 2016 Drake, Big Sean, Tame Impala and others, he responds with, “It really hypes me up.” He enthusiastically claims honor that he has received this much recognition and gets to represent El Paso. He is not just known on a local level and his gratitude is towards being an artist to break out of El Paso and showcase the amazing talent that comes from here. “There is nothing wrong with reppin’ your city,” he says about the thrill of telling people he’s from El Paso. Right now his location is Los Angeles, where he is working with different producers on mastering his songs and constantly working. “[I’m] making all these songs, not sure where they’re going to put them [for now].” And since he proclaims that he misses home all the time, I ask if we can expect him back soon to perform. He excitingly says, “Most definitely.”

November, 2016 When hearing of Kikimora, the first question on most people’s mind is, what does Kikimora mean? Hayley explains that the band’s unique name comes from the connection she sees between mythology and music, in this case Russian mythology. “A Kikimora is a Slavic

house spirit. It’s a small spirit that lives in the kitchen, and is kind of a seamstress chicken looking thing, with a scarf over its head. Not a very attractive spirit. She breaks dishes when she’s mad or hides your keys, a nuisance in the house,” says Hayley with a smile, before adding that it is not a reflection of the bands style, but an interesting source of inspiration. Although a literal Kikimora may be a nuisance in the house, the melodies of this band could

never be. They are often compared to the sounds of the legendary Erykah Badu, Amy Winehouse and Hiatus Kaiyote. Taking it back to the birth of Kikimora tells a tale as interesting as the one behind the band’s unique name. During the summer of 2014, in a hostel in Oaxaca Mexico, Hayley and Leo Bennato met by chance while travelling through Central America. Leo, born in Buenos Aires, knew little English and Hayley admits her Spanish was far from fluent. They were able to work past the language barrier and bond over their passion for music. They played instruments they had brought along on their travels, out in the hostel courtyard together throughout the remainder of their stay. The idea of a serious musical project was born and soon after, Leo and Hayley found themselves performing as a duo in Austin, Texas. From Austin they were drawn to Hayley’s hometown of El Paso because of the potential she saw here for bands at their beginning stages. A beautiful start leads to wonderful artistry in Kikimora’s first EP, Cosmic Control. The single off Cosmic Control speaks to taking control of your life and taking risks, reflecting on the story of the spontaneous way Hayley and Leo met and followed their passion of music. Kikimora’s message is evolving

guitarist, and lead vocalist, Eric Reed, it feels like you’re talking with an old friend. He’s laid back, unassuming, and oh so humble. Despite the fact you’ll see the name of his neo-folk/ Americana outfit splashed on many a flyer, handbill, and poster promoting the local music scene, that fame belies the essence of Reed’s reason for playing music. “Playing music is just a way for me to meet and share experiences with my friends and other people,” he said, “It’s a creative outlet.” That outlet has led to four EP’s and the freshly-minted first full-length record “Steep Hills.” The album is a collection of new songs and some that have been in the works for the last several years. For instance, the track “Dallas” is a song that Reed wrote about five years ago. The number is an achingly, heart-wrenching foray into perceived lost love. lia Esparza may be a familiar face for many in El Paso, but now she is known around the country. The Americas High School graduate is a singer who doesn’t follow the marked path. That proved true again on the national level when Elia auditioned for the NBC reality show “The Voice.”

The show draws thousands of contestants from all over the U.S., aiming for the opportunity to sing for four celebrity judges. The potential superstars get 90 seconds to try and get the judges, who are listening with their backs turned to them, to turn their chairs and offer them a spot on their team. Though not the first contestant to audition for the judges in Spanish, Elia definitely gained attention quickly for being different. “I did not expect that reaction for me and my Latino background,” Elia said the day after her audition aired nationwide. “It’s beautifully overwhelming.” El Paso, along with the rest of “The Voice” fans, was buzzing after Elia’s blind audition—which featured Selena’s “Como la Flor”—aired on September 25. “I have always been a huge Selena fan since I was a little girl and it was one of the first songs I performed when I was in high school, “ Elia recalled. “I got to perform with a band at the casino and we did “Como la Flor.” Ever since then it was like my ‘go to’ song. We all do it to each other, and we can’t help it,” Edwards adds about the elation felt when seeing a crowd feed off their energy. You’d figure that after playing a set, the members would be drained of any energy, yet Atchison expresses his craving for another set. The rest of the band, almost simultaneously, laughed and nodded in agreement. Their most recent project was in August— the release of their album, “Flowerbeds.” Ulibarri describes the theme of the album, which is about a loss of something and the celebration of life after life. The name came from Beardsley’s visit to his grandmothers grave, “I realized there were flowers everywhere. I realized that it was interesting that I go to this place that’s full of life to celebrate her once-life.” A collection of well thought-out songs, which keep true to the matter, are relatable and compelling. firstborn,” Martinez says. “It’s the first song that I believed I could do by myself.” As soon as he wakes up, he plays his music. And at lunchtime. And before bed. What began as typical piano lessons at age 10 became what Martinez, now 30, calls an “addiction.” “[It feels like] dreaming—when you’re having a really good dream and you don’t want to wake up—that’s what I feel every day when I’m playing,” he says. After being part of more than 20 broken-up bands over the years, Martinez made the decision to go solo just two years ago—and he’s not looking back. “If I mess up, it’s on me,” he says. “I don’t have to rely on anybody else.” From his native Lower Valley neighborhood to the downtown nightlife scene, Martinez regularly performs his live acoustic music www.thecitymagazineelp.com

uring a trip to Los Angeles

this past February, I paid a visit

to Frame Denim to get an idea of the kind of denim trends I could scoop up for fall. To my surprise, the sales girl implored me to buy a velvet blazer, swearing it was the next hottest accessory and on everyone’s order. I thought to myself, “Velvet? Really?” but took her word for it. I’m glad I did. Velvet is one of those trends that seems to fall out, then return, to popularity and this season it’s back with a vengeance. If you’re going to invest in one piece this Autumn, make sure it’s in this soft, luxe fabric. There are plenty of options to choose from—I’m seeing velvet on everything from shoes to bomber jackets. The juxtaposition of the luxury fabric on traditionally casual pieces is fun and unexpected, all the makings of good fashion. Trendsetters like Hailey Baldwin and Kendall Jenner are not waiting for the cool weather, but instead rocking this trend while temps are still soaring. Though it’s still warm in Texas, you can already wear velvet now as accent pieces, such as velvet booties with shorts or velvet cami dresses with wedges. There is no right or wrong way to rock the trend, just have fun with it, and don’t feel as if you have to wait for the cold to wear it. Dive into the luxe life!

older section of Arlington—one whose visitors had slowly been dwindling as each year passed. Many organizations and other individuals offered help and this annual tribute went on quite subtly until 2005 when a photo went viral on the internet of the stones in Arlington, each adorned with a wreath, covered in snow. This received national attention and thousands of people around the country began inquiring about how they could help. Though he was unable to donate thousands of wreaths across the country, Mr. Worcester decided to send seven wreaths to each state (one for each military branch as well as POW/MIA). The goal of covering Arlington was met in 2014 with the placement of 226, 525 wreaths. Today, over 300 locations hold wreath-laying ceremonies in every state, Puerto Rico, and 24 overseas cemeteries. Held annually on the second or third Saturday of December, WAA’s wreath-laying ceremony is hosted by the Civil Air Patrol here in El Paso at the Fort Bliss National Cemetery. Leading this year’s event is Patrick Mulvey, a volunteer with the civil air patrol, who was inspired by his own trip to Arlington to place wreaths with his son and father several years ago. The first year Fort Bliss participated in the WAA’s ceremony was 2006 and more wreaths were sold that year than any other gravesite in the United States. The tribute has only grown since. Today, there are approximately 42,000 to 45,000 graves in Fort Bliss National Cemetery. Last year, only 4,800 of the graves were adorned with a wreath-a very small amount in comparison to the number of graves total. Dave’s

on Film | By: JACQUELINE AGUIRRE |

Dave’s Pawn Shop, right across music venue, Tricky Falls, stands as the last false-front store that first opened in the 1950s as a surplus store. Upon first approaching the store, a life-sized Elvis mannequin greets you with his signature dance move frozen in time. The windows in which the King of Rock ‘N Roll stands between the neon signs and eye-catching jewelry enticing you to walk on in. One step into the store, and you discover this is not your ordinary pawnshop, it’s a gallery full of some of the most interesting things— from the famed Pancho Villa’s trigger finger, to a full-sized mummy, Dave’s is a collection of oddities. As if this pawnshop couldn’t be anymore unique, on Sundays, storeowner, Clay Baron, prepares for the transformation from Dave’s Pawn Shop to Live at Dave’s Sessions. “I wanted to do something really cool, local El Paso,” Baron says. For Baron, who first filmed local artist, Hope Riot, playing a pawned guitar in his shop, to later hosting local band, Lunas, this was only a small spark of what was to come. After bringing in friends to take over the project, Baron expresses excitement over the new venture, “We have the video guys, the sound guys, and the musicians willing to do it, and the place. I’m more than happy to open up,” he says. The three people behind the sessions at Dave’s include Javier Caballero who works with audio, and Rudy Parra and Frank Delgado, who both work on film. The collaboration stemmed from their preexisting interest in the collection store and expressed desire to film bands in the shop. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Boots Its officially boot season! So take all your boots out, boys and girls, and warm up those ankles in the most stylish way. Thigh highs, booties, heels, in leather, suede, or the infamous almost vinyl ones— you can’t go wrong with a nice pair of boots this winter!

Ditching the heels A lot of times girls think that heels are a must-have to complete an outfit, and although we love heels on everyone, sometimes they’re not the most comfortable thing to wear. For quick brunch with the girls, or even maybe a more chill date night, you can always opt for tennis shoes. Tennis shoes are very versatile. We see guys wearing crisp suits paired up with a nice pair of sneakers and looking very stylish. Going to wear a sexy cocktail dress? Spice it up a little and choose a nice pair of tennis shoes to make your look funkier.

Black Friday Chaos We are all for shopping during a big sale, but is it worth getting into a bunch of mall chaos for a $30 cashmere sweater? This year avoid the mayhem and start shopping smarter. A lot of online stores have also Black Friday discounts (even with free shipping) and even after Black Friday! Try not to get into an unnecessary fight at the mall, and this year stay home and shop online (You can even be shopping while enjoying another piece of pumpkin pie).

You’re such a bleach-ed Overly bleached hair is a look that is very hard to carry. Blondes have more fun we know (well allegedly), but what happens when blondes look like broomsticks? When your hair starts looking more like something to scrub the oven with, than a luscious mane, it’s time to let the bleach rest.

Sour Feet With the cold weather approaching, it is important that we keep our feet warm and toasty (to avoid getting a cold). Sometimes you have to wear double socks, or tights and socks. The thing is that inside your shoes it can get very warm and this can make your feet sweat. Now, there’s nothing wrong with that, unless your feet, and even worse your shoes, start smelling.

THE SINGLE MOST

YOU SHOULD DO

FOR YOUR SKIN

EVERYDAY | By: MATTHEW ABRAHAM |

A

s we head toward the cold weather months, our skin care concerns usually escalate, as many suffer from dry, irritated and dull complexions during the winter. If you

ask any skin care expert or beauty guru what the secret is to having great skin, most will tell you that proper, twice-daily cleansing is the key to a fresh, glowing complexion. That’s right, moisturizers and even sunscreens are secondary to cleansing as these products can be ineffective if your skin is not clean and free from makeup, dirt and other impurities. Most of us learned as teenagers that not properly cleaning your skin can result in clogged pores, cause major breakouts and acne and leave skin looking overall dull and aged. Nearly everyone has heard that sleeping in your makeup is a major no-no, but many don’t truly understand how detrimental it can be to skip washing your face before bedtime. Skin repairs itself while you sleep and not removing makeup, excess oil and dirt can impair this process and result in diminished production of collagen, leaving skin looking dull, dry and older than it is. Just think of it as your skin aging seven days faster for every night you skip removing your makeup, which should motivate you to take the time to at least use a few makeup wipes before turning in.

Makeup products are being formulated today to offer consumers longer-wear, increased pigmentation, more coverage and some are even waterproof. While this may result in better performing makeup that doesn’t budge, removing your makeup can require more effort, attention, and time. Additionally, traditional harsh soaps and cleansers that have been widely used for years to remove makeup have proven to be very ineffective against these seemingly bulletproof eyeliners and 12-hour lip stains, and much

Cleansing Milk If your skin tends to be on the oily side you probably will best be suited to use a cleansing milk specifically formulated for combination or oily skin. A great option is Clarin’s Cleansing Milk with Gentian ($32, Ulta), which is a refreshing gentle cleanser packed with vitamins and sage for skin firming and gentian which acts as a toner. Another good drugstore alternative is real L’Oreal Paris Skin Perfection Cleansing Milk ($6, lookfantastic.com), which will quickly and effectively leave your totally clean yet soft and without a greasy feel or finish. For sensitive skin, the Make Up For Ever Gentle Milk ($24, makeupforver.com) is an amazing moisturizing makeup remover for non-waterproof products that will hydrate and soothe skin while leaving skin feeling clean and supple.

Cleansing Oils If you suffer from dryer skin, a cleansing oil will be the best way to dissolve every last bit of your makeup while keeping your skin hydrated and glowing. My personal favorite is the TATCHA Pure Cleansing Oil ($86.36, qvc.com), which was created based on the ancient beauty cleansing secrets of geishas from Japan. It is a lightweight camellia and rice bran based oil that is applied to dry skin and emulsifies as you add warm water and quickly and safely dissolves away your toughest makeup. Your skin is left feeling fresh and incredibly smooth and luminous. Also try the No7 Beautiful Skin Cleansing Oil for Normal/Dry skin ($11.99, Walgreens).

l Paso’s local fitness movement #LiveFitEP held it’s second annual Fitness Festival over labor day weekend in the downtown convention center. Organizers of this event, Shane and Lizzie Martinez, and Marc and Amy Duchene were surprised by the greater than expected turnout. “We had over 2,500 people in attendance and had competitors from all over the Southwest and Mexico including Dallas, Albuquerque., Phoenix, Chihuahua and Guadalajara” said Marc Duchene, owner of 915 Sports. The festival had over 600 athletes competing in categories of CrossFit (El Paso Desert Games), Desert Jui Jitsu Championships, Rumble in the Desert Karate Tournament, the EP Iron Open powerlifting competition, and Mr. & Miss El Paso Fitness. Holly Jones-Webb was crowned as Miss El Paso Fitness and Michael Rosales as Mr. El Paso Fitness. The festival had over 40 vendors and pop-up boutiques, Zumba classes, gymnastics performances, Body in Motion classes, and a yoga session. There were meal prep services providing healthy meal options, supplement companies handing out samples, and a kid’s zone with jumping balloons and face painting. “The goal of this festival was to showcase El Paso’s many options for fitness enthusiasts and to inspire others to start living healthy as well,” said Shane Martinez, owner of New You Fitness. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Amy Duchene, owner of 915 Sports recalls, “We received awesome feedback from competitors that came in from out of town saying they definitely will return to compete next year, so we’re excited that this is also going to bring tourism to El Paso!” #LiveFitEP started as a hashtag in order to create awareness of different fitness activities around El Paso. “People would always complain about El Paso not being a healthy city, so we united to do something about it. #LiveFitEP was created to unite all health and fitness businesses as well as gather people who are interested in the same activities together,” said Cristobal Chavez, owner of 10th Planet Jui Jitsu. #LiveFitEP has also recently teamed up with El Paso’s new Whole Foods Market to keep promoting healthy living. They will be having free boot camps, open to the public, the first Saturday of each month on the top floor terrace. “We’re excited about this collaboration and we want to continue to grow #LiveFitEP and hopefully use this as a template for other cities to do the same thing. We want to make the festival bigger and better every year,” said Lizzie Martinez, owner of New You Fitness. Sponsors of this event included Southwest Plastic Surgery, Southwest University and Big Media. 110

Nashville, TN

– the place where country music stars, music

enthusiasts and musicians alike gather to be surrounded by the creativity and intimacy that a musical environment allows. Sure, there’s Austin, Texas and even Los Angeles, Calif. but when we walk about a music capital here, it’s all about Nashville. And if there’s one thing that music does – it brings people together. So whether you’re “Looking For Love in All the Wrong Places” or traveling with the “Sunshine of Your Love”, go ahead and see what Nashville has to offer. There’s a lot of different perks about visiting Nashville. The historic country roots of the city have evolved to include hipsters, foodies and rock n’ roll. Just two years ago, the New York Times named the city one of the “52 Places to Go”. So if you’re not a country fan, you can still enjoy the city with tons of things to do. Plus, Little Richard now calls it home, so you might even run into him! If you’re just a music enthusiast in general, you’ll love what the city has to offer and the many local spots were live music is available to hear any night. Visit the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum – this honors all stars and studio players from all genres of music. Housed in the Nashville Municipal Auditorium, stars such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hank Williams, Sir, and Motown can all be seen and enjoyed by everyone. Make this a stop to satisfy everyone’s musical preferences and to see how music has been appreciated and influenced many throughout the decades. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

t r av e l Taking another historical turn, Nashville also has the only fullsize replica of the Parthenon that’s located in Athens, Greece. Once you’ve hit up some museums and food at one of the local restaurants, be sure to see (and take selfies) at the Parthenon. Speaking of food – it is a big part of traveling. You always want to eat the way the locals do and strategically avoid any of the chain restaurants. Do we want people eating at Chik-fil-A when there’s so many great local food in El Paso? No. So why would you do that anywhere else? Burger Up is more than “just a burger joint.” With the total package of atmosphere, great food and locally sourced ingredients, Burger Up is the place to go when your stomach starts making more noise than the acoustic guitar being played on the corner.

t r av e l The Johnny Cash Museum is another reason to take a trip out to Nashville. The museum has the most memorabilia from the icon, it’s ridiculous. It’s located in the heart of downtown and has been reviewed and recognized for being a place to visit by people of all ages. Got kids? Great! Take them and check out the interactive technology inside. Some of the items included in the museum are personal letters, stage costumes, artwork and handwritten lyrics. Pay homage to the “Man and Black” and step inside his world for a bit. As I said earlier, Nashville has now grown outside of the country genre. The city is now influenced more and more by rock n’ roll. Case in point, Jack White (you know, from The White Stripes) has his Third Man Record store in Nashville. A really cool, solid black storefront contains records, the world’s only live venue with directto-acetate recording capabilities, a photo studio and a novelties lounge. It’s been called an “innovator in the world of vinyl records,” and brings back the greatness of buying music. A trip to Nashville wouldn’t be complete without stopping by the Ryman Auditorium. Since 1892 the “Mother Church of Country Music,” auditorium has housed many great musicians such as Bon Jovie and Patsy Cline. Now, you can take backstage tours, record an album and even see live

ovember delightfully ushers in the magnificent gold-studded and sparkling holiday season and it all begins with the sights and smells of the chilling fall air.

Aromas of cinnamon and hot apple cider and the gathering of friends and family around the Thanksgiving table, not only delights our palettes, but also creates memories that will last for generations. When I think of Thanksgiving, I am reminded about how many things I am grateful for. This special holiday is not only significant due to the symbolic nature of the first Thanksgiving meal and the arrival to this wonderful land, but it should remind us of our freedoms, and blessings of family and friends.
