LOVE THIS MAGAZINE! Greetings Shelley and The City Magazine! My daughter, Sarah Payne, had her interview with Texas Tech, Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in Jan. 2014. It was the first visit to El Paso for her and my husband, Jim, and I. While Sarah spent many hours in interviews, etc., I was determined to check out El Paso. While at Walgreen’s I noticed a big red magazine: “The Best of 2013.”
“Mom” Terry Payne
Bro Bryan 1st Elp visit
That magazine inspired me to check out the Best of El Paso. I literally had Jim drive me to many of the BEST: L&J Café, Carlos & Mickey’s, Crave Kitchen & Bar, Menchie’s, Belle Sucre, Vanities, and Tres Mariposas! I ate and shopped my way thru El Paso determined to feel good about this city, so far away from our home in Central Texas. Sarah is now a second year student at the Medical School and I am happy to report that I have toted this particular magazine with me on all four visits throughout El Paso since her interview. I have read it cover to cover and have also gone to Cattleman’s, Tom’s Folk Café, Ardovino’s, Taco Tote, Susan Eisen Fine Jewelry and Watches, and Barragan’s Salon and Spa since that first trip. I went to ALL of these places because of YOUR magazine! And I have told many of the folks at these businesses that I was there because of YOUR magazine. Sadly, I was not in El Paso when “THE CITY BEST OF2014” came out on the stands. Yikes! Happily, I drove myself to your office last week and purchased a copy. I left that copy at Sarah’s apt. In El Paso-I will need it there on my next visit! But I did bring back my 2013 magazine to Dripping Springs, Texas. It will forever be my first tie with your wonderful city! So many friendly folks, incredible places to dine and shop, and a great Medical School! Your magazine truly was an ambassador to your city for me. Sarah now has a subscription to your magazine and she will be saving them for me to read when I come to visit her next! Many, many thanks/Muchas Gracias to THE CITY MAGAZINE! Paso, TX. Coming from an extensive background in the trucking industry, that spans over 30 years, Rose began to notice some changes in the business. It was at this time, she decided to plan her exit strategy, hence, the birth of the Postal Solution. Q Why the postal industry? A Coming from transportation, I figured it’s simply transporting goods but on a different level. Q How did you prepare for the change? A Once I saved up three months of living expenses and rent, I was ready for the move. I didn’t have any other money available such as loans or money from family and friends, I had three months to make it happen. I leased a space “As Is” and negotiated a one year contract. The doors opened in 2008 with a regular personal printer/copier, and some

I didn’t know much, but I researched information by

surfing the net and making phone calls. Even if I thought I knew the answer, I found when I asked questions people were willing to provide the answer. I used this as a way to determine value. I have negotiated all of my contracts and realized most things are negotiable. Q What would you do differently? A I would start with money, it just makes it easier. Perhaps by having a loan, I would’ve had money to purchase more equipment (ability to offer more services, which means more revenue) and to make things a lot nicer. In the beginning, I simply shampooed the

Be ready for next year as the TAMACC Convention will be held right here in El Paso, which is something that the EPHCC and Teresa Gandara stated their excitement about. We can hope that even more El Paso business owners are recognized for their hard work and contributions to the community. As El Paso celebrates its heritage this month, let us not forget about the great city that we live in and the great things that people are doing here. The El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is a powerful tool and organization here in El Paso that highlights and recognizes the strengths of our local Hispanic business-owners. From older generations we are often told “never forget where you come from and the spirit of those awarded exude just that; they each embrace the heritage and culture of El Paso with arms wide open. The EPSO’s performances are a magnificent sight to see, consisting of 80 core members, and depending on the music, EPSO may use more than 95 extra musicians on stage. The home of EPSO’s concerts is our downtown landmark, The Plaza Theatre. As previously stated, the EPSO’s concerts are only the beginning of their involvement in the community. The EPSO also holds a fierce educational mission, “to help students better appreciate fine music” says Chairman Carroll and Executive Director Jacobson. Since 1939, EPSO has introduced more than 750,000 fifth graders to live classical music; and in 2011, the EPSO partnered with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute to introduce an acclaimed program to schools all over El Paso. This program provides school districts with an exceptional repertoire for students. The collection of music they provide is based on curriculum as well as aligns with national standards. These programs boost children’s confidence, and keeps them well rounded in what they’re exposed to as they grow, learning music other than what’s being played on the radio today. Along

LA SEMILLA FOOD CENTER EDUCATES THE YOUTH | By: KRYSTA AYERS |

O
ur neighbors are doing cool things – La Semilla Food Center, a local farm located in Anthony, New Mexico, is doing more than just bringing healthy food to farmers markets in El Paso and Las Cruces.
Partnered with an organization called Food Corps, La Semilla works with school districts in Anthony, New Mexico and Las Cruces, for a program they’ve named “Farm to School: Edible Education.” This amazing hands-on program works with students at elementary and middle school levels to educate them about growing food and becoming more conscious about what they are putting into their bodies. Let’s be frank — this program, and what La Semilla Food Center is doing for the community, is incredible. Long gone are the days when agriculture was second nature to children. If allowed, kids will eat junk food and fast food all day. Unless they have health-conscious parents, they don’t know what they are putting into their bodies and the consequences that come with eating poorly. I spoke with Rebecca Wiggins, co-founder of Farm to School, who was able to share with me the different changes and the various things going on with Edible Education. Starting in September, Food Corps employees will help teach students how to grow various edible plants. The participating schools include Gadsden Elementary School, Gadsden Middle School, Valley View Elementary in Las Cruces, and several others. Something new this coming year, Wiggins stated, was that they are now including professional development workshops for teachers at each school participating in the program. This is great, as these teachers are with the students all day, year round, and can emphasize the importance of this program and implement agricultural knowledge into other lesson plans. A new lesson for Edible Education will be taught every month so that students can get a full overview of different plants and how to cook and make healthier choices. The types of food planted, and the types of flowers planted, are all in season at the time and will help students understand and learn more about the different seasonal plants. For example, Wiggins named some of the edibles that they would be planting this school year during cooler months: spinach, kale, carrots and beets will be included, and for warmer months: eggplants, squash, and tomatoes will be something they can look forward to. 51

September, 2015 For four years this program has been going strong and Wiggins said that her hopes are for every school in the region to integrate this into their curriculum. She said it’s important that the students learn about farming and getting the family involved with this healthy lifestyle. The program also has an after school workshop for the kids, which usually has a lesser number of attendees, so the workshop can be more intimate and each student can receive more attention and direction. Also offered is a family cooking night where the students can invite their

Wiggins claimed that this program has may not be exposed to at home, broadening their food palette and making them more likely to try new foods in restaurants or in different settings.

With the help and support from Paso Del Norte Health Foundation, Bowie High School, Food Corps and NMSU, La Semilla’s Farm to School program is able to function smoother and give the community the tools they need to educate others and themselves on living a healthier lifestyle consuming good food. How to Exit from a
Relationship with
Dignity
| By: JANNET BUSTILLOS |
Breaking up is never easy and can be a taunting decision. Although there is no correct way to a break-up there are ways both of you can maintain your dignity, and make the process a little less painful.
1 2 3 4 5
Make sure your reasoning behind the break up is clear. Avoid any vacillation or indecisive thoughts. This may be a life altering decision, and it’s something you must be very certain about. Decide ahead of time if breaking up is really the answer. If you are certain moving on is the route you want to take, then don’t let any manipulation from your partner allow you to think otherwise.
6 7
Determine when the best time to break the news might be. Ultimately there will never be a right time for this, but don’t do it in public or at a family dinner. Can you say “awkward”? Make sure you break the news in person. With today’s technology people are keener to send an email or a text message, but be courageous and deliver the news face to
face. There’s obviously an exception to the rule if your partner lives

No matter what you do, make sure you do not raise your voice. If you want to leave this relationship with dignity and on semigood terms, then the worst thing you can do is lose self control.
You will get your point across better when you’re calm and collected.
Lengthy explanations can sometimes make things more complicated.

Don’t drag things out. If you have come to terms that the relationship is over then stop fighting the inevitable. It’s not fair to you or your partner. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Dental Veneers
F
rom Katy Perry to Zac Efron, almost every celebrity in Hollywood today has veneers. With this cosmetic trend growing more popular over recent years, we’re seeing it not only in magazines, but also in our local community. As with any new trend, questions about safety, procedure and upkeep arise. To begin with the facts, let’s briefly go over what a veneer is. A veneer is a thin custom-made shell created with tooth colored
materials like porcelain or resin. They are shaped to fit and cover the surface of imperfect teeth, creating a tooth that matches the patients desired shape, length and color. On occasion, it is necessary for some enamel from the patients’ real tooth to be stripped away. The veneer can then be bonded to the front of the tooth. Veneers mask worn down, chipped, broken, misaligned, uneven, irregularly shaped, and discolored teeth. To help us understand the process of veneers, Dr. Antonio Solis of Southwest Celebrity Smiles, along with Dr. Adela McLaughlin of El Paso Quality Dentistry, will share a bit of their expertise. Are full smile veneers a common request from your clients nowadays? Dr. Adela McLaughlin: One of the most common requests is to enhance the way a smile looks. While a person may not specifically ask for veneers, it is certainly an option that has become popular because of the ability it provides to enhance the color, shape and alignment of teeth. Is the procedure painful? Dr. Antonio Solis: There should never be pain associated with any dental procedure. Depending on how much (if any) enamel reduction will be necessary; it’s best to anesthetize the areas that will be worked on, so no sensitivity occurs during the procedure. But in most cases, very minimal to no preparation of the tooth is needed so it is really not necessary to anesthetize and no discomfort should be felt. Do veneers ever fall off? Dr. Adela McLaughlin: A well made set of veneers will most likely not fall off, but there are many factors that affect both the esthetic result and longevity of veneers. Veneers that fall off usually were not planned properly, placed properly or maintained properly. A well-trained dentist can provide predictable veneers that can last a very long time! Dr. Antonio Solis: Even though new technology in porcelain materials and bonding agents make it virtually improbable for veneers to fall off, there are other factors that can cause veneers to fracture or come unbounded. Occlusion; how the person bites down on to their teeth, is one. Another is biting down on hard objects such as metal, your nails, bobby pins, etc.
63
What are the pros of veneers?
What are the cons?
Dr. Adela McLaughlin: Benefits of veneers are many.
Dr. Antonio Solis: There are some cons; cost is one

sensitivity, and in some cases a more stable bite!
64
September, 2015 What if you get tired of having veneers? Dr. Adela McLaughlin: If your veneers required having enamel removed, you cannot reverse the procedure. Your options would be to replace the veneers with new ones. If no enamel was removed, you may be able to have your veneers removed, but it could be tricky or difficult to do so. My advise is to take your time learning about your options, and find an experienced dentist who allows you to be involved in the process so the end result meets your expectations. What is the price range? Dr. Antonio Solis: There is a broad range of investments for veneers. I’ve heard as low as $200 to as high as $2,000 per veneer. What’s important is to do your homework. Research the doctors’ credentials, where the doctor received their training, their experience with cosmetic dentistry, and past cases you can review. All of these are important. Of course, the more experience and the better the training, the more you will be investing. And be careful, cheaper isn’t always better. You get what you pay for, like anything else. What is the response from customers who’ve had this procedure done? Dr. Adela McLaughlin: In my office, patients are excited about their results! I have not had one patient tell me they regret their decision to have veneers. Dr. Antonio Solis: Patients always leave happy with a newer, whiter celebrity smile. Sometimes they can’t believe how different they look. It’s definitely the most rewarding and satisfying procedure I do. For the most part it’s an almost instant change, kind of like waving a magic wand on the patient.

I
E L PA S O
t is said that laughter is the best medicine, and on July 25 2015, eight-year-old Eder, received the best medicine possible when he met the person who could always put a smile on his face: Ronald McDonald.
“I think he’s funny and he makes me laugh. I just want to meet my friend,” Eder said. When he was just a little boy, Eder and his family learned that he had leukemia. Despite his diagnosis, Eder has remained optimistic. Like many boys his age, Eder loves to play video games, soccer, and is a big fan of superheroes such as Iron Man. Eder’s wish took place at the Ronald McDonald House in Central El Paso, granted by the Make-A-Wish North Texas El Paso Regional Office with volunteer support from Dignity Memorial Funeral Home, who raised funds for Make-A-Wish. Ivan Jaquez, the fundraising captain for Dignity Memorial, was overjoyed that his team raised more than $5,800. Jacquez said the entire experience was an honor. “I started out as a volunteer for Make-A-Wish,” Jaquez said, “and Make-A-Wish has done a lot for the community, so I wanted to do my part.” www.thecitymagazineelp.com

September, 2015 The wish reveal party kicked off with Eder making a special entrance and was greeted by his friends and family, Dignity Memorial and – as a special surprise – Ronald McDonald. Initially a little shy, Eder became more at ease once he was hanging out with Ronald, who made the day extra special by having a paper shredding contest with Eder, making him a paper mask and performing a variety of magic tricks. “I love Ronald McDonald, and have always wanted to meet him,” Eder said. Dignity Memorial decorated the Ronald McDonald House with balloons, superhero masks and a face painting station. At the station, Eder had his face painted just like Ronald McDonald with the help of some Minions, some of his favorite characters from the movie “Despicable Me.” There were plenty of treats at the party, such as superhero and sports-themed cupcakes, cookies, chips, and a variety of sandwiches that were donated by Subway. Eder also received a visit from Batman, Iron Man, Subman from Subway and several electronic gifts. With the help from Batman, Eder opened his gifts, which included a PS4, movies, video games, Beats headphones, an iPad, a 55” flat screen TV, a jersey from one of his favorite soccer players, Leonel Messi, as well as several gifts from his friends and family. Even though this day was dedicated to Eder, he wanted to make sure that his sister also felt special and requested that she receive an iPad as well, a testament of Eder’s selflessness and consideration for those around him despite his illness. Another member of the fundraising team at Dignity Memorial, Bernie Valdez, stressed the importance of giving back to the community. “If you give, you receive,” Valdez said. “Having three healthy children myself, giving back to Make-A-Wish is a special opportunity for me to give back to someone.”

If you can’t make it to one of the tea parties, don’t worry – Caffe Fioretti’s lunch hours are from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and have a variety of items to choose from. Laura wants to encourage healthy options since Caffe Fioretti has been working with “Eat Well! El Paso.” This is one of the main reasons they don’t offer regular sodas or overly sweet drinks. Caffe Fioretti also stands out because they serve all their beverages in authentic china. Gonzalez has been collecting teapots and teacups over the years and she thinks that’s the best way to enjoy a nice cup of tea. Caffe Fioretti is definitely a unique place in which family legacy gathers, Gonzalez and her sisters are invested in keeping this teahouse as authentic as possible and it shows. They live each day with their mother Esperanza’s motto “Laughter is the most beautiful and vital force.” You can feel the good vibes and the love in every cup of tea, in the walls and in the ambience. They made Caffe Fioretti a place where friends and family can gather and just have a good time!

The heart of downtown is the Pike/ Pine corridor with the center located at 4th and Pine. Of course there are the usual chain of hotels that aren’t far from this area that you can pick from, but if you are looking for a truly unique experience choosing a cozy bed and breakfast is a fine way to not only achieve a more “local” experience, but to meet more “local” friends. These souls can add to your experience by pointing you in the right direction in finding the best restaurants and hot spots to see - they can also become friends you will connect with for years to come. To find a place that’s unique but also that suits your needs, Airbnb.com is a great source to use to browse all of the different places to stay. Option two is an out-of-the-city experience. The first step to achieving this is to get in your car and drive out to Lake Quinault Lodge in the Olympic National Park and Forest. This timeless lodge was built in 1926 and is filled with rustic charm. With 91 rooms and a newly renovated contemporary feel, this lake-side retreat is the perfect place to visit, curl up, and unwind. This place is also nice because it sits right on the lake, making it a fantastic spot to fish, hike, canoe and enjoy all the rest of the lakeside activities available at Lake Quinault. The lodge also features rooms with fireplaces and balconies so whether you are bringing the whole family out for a fully

The world of fitness competitions is growing thanks to its popularity on social media, and El Paso’s own Lizzie Martinez is the first ever IFBB Bikini Professional Competitor. HIS PREROGATIVE | By: ADRIAN VAQUERA-SILVA |
“Neatness - which is grooming, after all - is definitely the most important requirement.” -Babe Paley
There’s a reason that James Bond’s character is met with admiration - and even adoration - from so many men across the globe. Seen by many as the epitome of what modern masculinity should be defined as, this fictional character embodies the traits many of us wish to possess; confidence, sophistication and mystery. Taking a page from the esteemed gentlemen secret agent, this month’s grooming advice is meant to help you reinvent the person you see in the mirror, and embrace your inner 007.
Facial Cleanser: Dragon’s Blood Foaming Cleanser This all natural and certified organic skin care product is made to reboot the most tired of faces. Made with Dragon Blood extract (which in reality is only nectar from the Croton Lechleri tree), this foaming cleanser is made specifically to protect, detoxify, clean and help heal your skin. If that wasn’t enough to persuade you, the RSVP company also donates a portion of all sales each financial quarter to the St. Jude Children’s Research hospital, and plants a tree for every bottle of skin care sold. ($17; www.rsvpmen.com) Recommended for: the men who want to look good and feel great, all while being charitable at the same time. Investing in yourself has never been so rewarding.
Energizing Mask: 4VOO Distinct Man Energizing Mask Have an important meeting or social event to attend and want to look your best, but don’t have the time to visit a spa? 4VOO’s Energizing mask is designed for the men who understand how important first impressions are. Made with aloe vera extract, chamomile extract and orange extract, this luxurious product regenerates, revitalizes and soothes your skin for a healthier and younger looking you; all within 10 minutes! ($54; www.4voo.com) Recommended for: the men who look like a distant relative of Quasimodo, and are in desperate need of a transformation. Disclaimer: This may fix your face, but no www.thecitymagazineelp.com

HIS PREROGATIVE Hair: Kevin Murphy Rough Rider Rough Rider is a strong-hold matte clay made from diatomaceous earth, designed to provide volume and definition. Its ingredients also include golden bamboo, sunflower seed oil and sandalwood to help control your mane without stripping the natural color of your hair; instead adding softness and shine. This clay hair product also moisturizes dry hair while nourishing the scalp all the while stimulating hair growth. ($25; www.kevinmurphy.com.au) Recommended for: those who dare to live up to the products name. Drawing inspiration from the “Teddy Boy” style of late 1950s, this product is meant to help you perfect the most sculpted and voluminous quaff.
Body: Buckler’s Chapped Skin Remedy Named Best Hand Cream in DETAILS Magazine’s Best Products of 2014 as well as by Men’s Journal, Buckler’s Chapped Skin Remedy is made of a moisture intensive formula designed to heal the roughest of skins. Highly recommended for hands, feet, and elbows any other leathered and weathered areas on your body, especially those that shriveled in this desert heat. ($19; www. bucklersremedy.com) Recommended for: the compulsive hand washers to the chronically ashy. This product is filled with antioxidants and nutrients that can turn the scaliest to the softest.

in and out
Top it with a bow We know that old silhouettes and styles are making their way back into our closets, a pussy-bow blouse is no exception. Inspired by classic retro office attire, this blouse will accentuate and give an elegant look to any girl that wears it. Mix your look up with some jeans, a pencil skirt, a blazer or even a delicate cardigan, you’ll be the fanciest “secretary” at work.
Hiding behind the bush Over plucking should be intended just for chickens. This season let those eyebrows rest and try to rock a fuller eyebrow. Audrey Hepburn, Camilla Belle and Lily Collins are perfect examples. Fuller eyebrows make a statement and provide a more natural look. Now, we are not encouraging for you to rock a “Kahlo” look, the uni-brow only looked cool on Frida.
Handy man Handkerchiefs need to make their way back into the modern gentleman’s pockets. Every guy should carry one in order to aid a damsel in distress in case she sheds a tear, or needs to clean a makeup smudge. DO NOT use it to blow your nose, we don’t want you to be digging for it in a sticky pocket.
115
in and out
Sneak those out of here Sneakers with a wedge are so out of style. First of all they look pretty ugly. Then there’s the illusion of you being taller while being sporty at the same time – let’s be honest girl, we know you’re not really 5’10”.
Fedoras This goes for everyone, men and women. You’re not part of a gangster squad, you’re not doing a “Singing in the Rain” performance, unless you’re going to a costume party. Let’s avoid wearing these hats people, they don’t do any favors for any gender and they look pretty corny.
Stop it, Don’t Pop it Guys – the Jersey Shore is far from the El Paso desert, so we should avoid at every cost adopting the trend of popping the collar out of our polo shirts. They are not stylish, and you can’t get with the ladies when you look like a douche.
