magnificent story of tirelessly fighting for people and becoming a leader in immigration. This is a story that we as a border town, are very familiar with. She is a fierce advocate for the people in this surrounding area. We also feature James Scherr, who still today, remains the youngest attorney ever licensed in the state of Texas. You’ll want to read about the various cases he has handled in the past—all being very significant to his career. impact she has made on people’s lives and on our international border that matter the most.
“I love what I do,” said Walker. “I really enjoy the policy work and the intricacy of immigration law; I’ve been fortunate to do what I like.” That love for immigration law, or even being an attorney, weren’t always on the radar. She shared that she didn’t have a clue as to what she wanted to be. Her father was a dentist and her mom had a degree in speech therapy. Walker graduated college at the top of her class and wanted to be a Rhodes scholar. While she was selected to compete for the scholarship by the university, she was not successful in being chosen. Not sure of what to do next, her professors suggested that she go to law school. “It was stumbling happenstance that I ended up being a lawyer, but I’ve really enjoyed the part of the profession where you can apply law to fact to try and reach an objective to help somebody; that part is awesome,” she said.

After graduating from law school, Walker came to El Paso to do international tax work. It was after her first year that cross-border situations arose, and companies needed to transfer people into the U.S., when she started working on business immigration matters. Her dedication to her immigration law specialty and love for the city grew quickly. “I have been blessed to be from here because it is a true immigration law center. We have the largest visa processing post in the world at the U.S. Consulate in Cd. Juárez, a field office headquarters for Customs and Border Protection with multiple ports of entry, a field office of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and detention and removal operations of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, as well as immigration courts.” She’s served on numerous boards and legal and business associations, including the US Foreign Trade Association. As president, she spent four years working on getting the first dedicated commuter lane in El Paso. In addition, she served as Chair of the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce. She also served as the former national president and general counsel of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), which currently has over 14,000 lawyers as members. She was also Chair of the Exam Committee for the Texas Board of Legal Specialization for Immigration and Nationality Law. When asked what kind of impact living on an international border has made on her career, the answer was immediate—great depth and experience. “The application of immigration law and policy, you see it day in and day out. That depth of experience you just can’t find in the interior of the United States,” Walker explained. “Everything that hits on the application of immigration policy and law are here, so we are a great laboratory for someone who is going to focus on immigration. I have a greater, I believe, appreciation for all the different ways that immigration connects across agency levels than you would have if you were in the interior of the United States, it’s been a great educational opportunity.” Walker’s recognitions span back 25 years, her most recent by Chambers USA (a renowned research organization) in May when she was singled out nationally and statewide in immigration; and in April when she was ranked in Band 1, the highest band rating possible. She is one of 11 lawyers in the United States awarded this ranking for expertise in business immigration by Chambers Global. She has been ranked in Band 1 by Chambers Global and Chambers USA for several consecutive

s I sat in the reception area of his office for the interview, it was a great opportunity to see, up close, the law firm of Anderson, Anderson, Bright and Crout, in action. Even on a Friday afternoon, there is the hustle and bustle of lawyers diligently responding to the needs of their clients. It was worth the wait. An interview with Steve Anderson is much more than a question-and-answer session. It was more like having coffee with an old friend, a conversation about life, about experiences, and about the importance of learning. He is very easy to talk to and made me feel comfortable. With all of his success and accomplishments and involvement in the community, he is genuine and very down to earth.
Anderson, a shareholder in the law firm of Anderson, Anderson, Bright and Crout, is a 1975 graduate of Coronado High School. He received his undergraduate degree in Government from the University of Texas at Austin in 1979, then went on to pursue his law degree at Texas Tech School of Law. He continued his education by earning yet another degree, a Masters of Law in Taxation, in 1986 from Georgetown University School of Law. As if his vitae was not full enough, in 2015 he went back to school to earn a Master of Science degree in Bible and Ministry from Lubbock Christian University. When he is not on the

ave you ever read your Zodiac sign’s traits and thought to yourself, “Wow, that’s not accurate at all!”? If you have, then there could be
a very unique reason for that. People born around the third week of each month are often considered “cusp” signs. Simply put, this means you are born in between a period of a few days in which the sun is leaving one zodiac sign and entering into another. For example, this can mean that while your October 22 birthday says you’re a Libra, you’ve got a lot of Scorpio going on too! The closer
your birthday is to the monthly cusp dates, the more likely you are to have a split between the traits of two different zodiac signs. Below are the cusp dates and some defining characteristics:

he good ol’ United States of America is most certainly the land of the free in consideration to some of the wacky laws I’ve found. We can assume one of two things: either our forefathers knew how to have fun or too many of them got a bit carried away and surpassed some limits. The funny thing is, some of these laws are still in effect today. Here are some of the craziest laws (past and present) across our homeland.
In Wyoming, it is illegal to harm or take a fish with a gun.
Now we’ll have to resort to fishing poles.
WA
These guys definitely love their beer. In this state, it is illegal
to destroy anyone’s beer cask, barrel, keg, or bottle.
TX
It is illegal to sell one’s eye. Guess eye patches will never be
in style in Texas (not that we’d want them to be).
RI In Rhode Island it is illegal to intentionally bite off someone’s
arm. If it’s an accident—you’re off the hook!
PA It is illegal for fortune tellers to administer love potions or tell someone where to find buried treasure in this state.
OH No parties with the fish there; it is illegal to get a fish drunk. OK It is illegal to wrestle a bear. Better find a new wrestling buddy! NM It is illegal to sing the state anthem if you’re not going to sing it with full effort.
NV In this state, you are not allowed to commute via camel. NE If a child burps during church, the parents can be arrested. MO In Montana, it is illegal to honk your horn at the risk of scaring a horse.
MS
Having one illegitimate child is ok, as long as it’s not two.
ME
It is illegal to have your Christmas decorations up past the
14th of January.
KS Owning a gambling device is completely illegal, unless it’s from before 1950.
IA One-armed piano players must, by law, perform for free. IN It is illegal to catch fish with your bare hands. How am I supposed to catch fish now?!
ID In Idaho, cannibalism is illegal, unless you do it for survival— then it is ok!
HI No magic tricks here, kids’, having a coin in your ear is illegal. GA It is illegal for chickens to cross the road. Now we definitely know those silly jokes about the chicken crossing the road did not originate in Georgia!
CA If there is a frog-jumping contest in California, you best hope that no frogs die. It is illegal to consume frog legs if they die in said contest.
AK
I guess Arkansas is a bit sensitive about its name because
it is illegal to mispronounce it.
AL
Looks like you’ll have to carry the cone in your hand now
because it is illegal to carry an ice cream cone in your backpocket. 58

TOMORROW Her theatre resume includes playing Margot in “The Diary of Anne Frank,” portraying Laurey Williams in “Green Grow” the Lilacs and ruling as the King of France in “King Lear.” For those of us that grew up (or had kids that grew up) watching great 90’s television shows, you should remember the show, “Boy Meets World” (and the great love story of Corey and Topanga). Almost a decade later, Disney decided to create a spinoff show called, “Girl Meets World.” Corey and Topanga now have a daughter, Riley, who the show revolves around. In Season 3 Episode 4, which aired on June 17, Anahi Bustillos plays Riley’s Spanish teacher. “[She was] a strong role model,” Bustillos says of why she liked playing the character. Bustillos, who grew up watching “Boy Meets World,” said working with Ben Savage (Corey Matthews) was great. “I definitely told him and Topanga that I watched their show.” Going through rehearsal in front of the 30 people that were part of the network, Bustillos found that she had the confidence to be there and perform. The show, which is taped in front of a live audience, was rehearsed and performed in one week’s time. It’s hard work. She reassures me that there is fun in between, but the hours are long. Bustillos has also been a guest star on “CSI Miami,” “Medium” and “Up All Night.” She has been a co-star on ABC Family’s “Greek” and Showtime’s hit TV show, “Shameless.” If you watch her in “Girl Meets World” and then switch to her more dramatic TV shows, you can see that the actress can play many faces and emotions.

Her aspirations in her career are limitless. There is not just one “dream” actor to work with. “I am open and would be so grateful to work with anyone where the respect is equal on both sides and when together, we create art to which everyone feels alive and on fire,” she responds. She also adds, “I’ve always wanted to work with Edward James Olmos. The musical “Zoot Suit” from 1981 sold me on this man’s talent. Directors who I was quite caught www.thecitymagazineelp.com

that tells the true story of what immigrants go through to cross the border into America. Also, Ana Lily Amirpour for “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.” Everything about that film is captivating.” Apart from being able to tell a story, Bustillos finds that one of the most rewarding parts of her job is getting to meet people. “I hate small talk,” she tells me. Her job allows her to meet other people involved in the craft and have real and open conversations. To unwind from the chaotic world of LA and acting, she travels – sometimes alone – in order to unwind and get back to a calm mindset. As a creative person, she also uses other outlets of creativity, like dance and music, to express herself and calm down post hustling after acting jobs. We will see more of Anahi Bustillos in the future and El Paso can proudly say that another talented person was born here and reached their potential. “At the heart of it all, I really want to tell stories,” Bustillos sincerely says. El Paso will be excited to hear those stories. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Casual C asual Fridays, an all too-common term that doesn’t have to
be (but often is) synonymous with boring. “Casual Fridays”
is a Western term that was created to give the professionals a break from
traditional—and conservative—suits. The cultural act was picked up all over the world as a trend, but the act of designating a single day to
dress down is now all but obsolete in most work environments.
In these times, when more and more jobs are cropping up in the creative,
tech, media, and other industries where conservative dress is not de rigueur, trends like sneakers, bombers, torn sweatshirts aren’t entirely out
of place in the office. I have embraced being comfy cool, whereas at one point, I never even wore flats because of my insecurity over being short. Now, I live in them! Rule of thumb: Casual does not have to be boring or basic. Casual can be

Bomber Jackets
| By: GESUINA LEGASPY |
I first spied this trend at the Yeezy show a few
seasons ago and this is a look with some serious
staying power. Whether it’s satin or embroidered, the best
thing about the bomber is its day-to-night kind of feel. You can pair
it casually or you can dress it up—perfect for an after work happy hour.
3
Sweats (Yes, Sweats!)
“Athleisure” is where comfort meets casual at it’s finest. A good sweatshirt is a must for the fall, and you can pair yours with a leather legging, a skirt, or of course, denim. There is no right or wrong to rock this look, and it’s so comfortable
and versatile that this is a trend I hope will stick
around for a while!

Stressed about the distressed We all enjoyed wearing distressed jeans when summer was in full effect, but the closer we get to the cooler months, wearing them seems kind of pointless. Who wants to have huge holes in their pants when the temperature starts to drop? Not to mention, they can get extremely overpriced! “Here, buy these homeless-looking pants for $100!” No thanks.
Logo overload We can’t help it if brands overwhelm their products with logos (ex: Michael Kors bags) but having a logo across your chest sometimes comes across as tacky. Parading your expensive brand is not cute. Save your answer if someone asks you about that shirt, instead of displaying as many brands as you can like a cheap window display.
Ill fitting How many times have you bought something that’s too large thinking “I can make it fit”? Or something that is a little smaller because “I’m going to lose weight”? Although the motivation and the intentions might be good, we can no longer be wearing ill-fitting clothing that makes us look disproportionate or bigger than we really are. Avoid looking like a circus tent, or like a badly wrapped tamale and stick to your measurements. (Tip: It is also good to know your exact measurements when you buy online, so you can avoid buying something that doesn’t fit.) www.thecitymagazineelp.com
At Different Ages

LOVE In your 20s What women want: • A nice body and sporting a six pack is a plus. Can we say Channing Tatum lookalikes are always welcome (wink, wink)? • The living arrangements aren’t necessarily deal breakers for 20-something-year-olds. Roommates are the norm and having “after parties” at their place is always fun. • Income is not a big deal, since most 20-something-year-olds are still students; splitting the tab is no biggie. • Definitely not in a hurry to settle down—taking the relationship day-by-day is the common way of living.
What men want: • Not particularly looking for anything long lasting. Finding that hot girl you can party with is what it’s all about. • Physical appearance is highly important to men most of the time, but especially in your 20s. • Finances are not an issue for men, since most twenty-something year-olds are struggling to make ends meet. For men in their 20s, it’s about having some companionship with a fun, good-looking gal.
What is love? Is it something you taste, feel, or see? Does it vary from person to person? Does the way you love someone change with age? The question is ... does love differ with age? As we grow older and wiser our dating standards tend to change. 88

LOVE In your 40s What women want: • You are in the market to find a man, no longer a “bro” (unless you’re a cougar, then this doesn’t relate to you). • The “bad boy” is no longer acceptable; It is all about finding a man who is a gentleman and will love and respect you. • Since most people have children by now, finding a man who is a great father (even if it’s not your children) is a good quality in a man. • A man with a career is highly important. You don’t want to have the need to be struggling with someone who is indecisive. • The Silver Foxes (salt and pepper hair) and some laugh lines is what makes a man have some character and stand out. • Although commitment is still important, marriage is no longer a hot topic. If it happens, it happens. I have a friend who is in her 40s and had a horrible divorce years ago. She says she no longer thrives on the idea of marriage, but does want a partner/

What men want: • Men are also looking for some stability in a woman. The game playing and dramatic antics are no longer cool. A stable/sane woman is a lot sexier for men in their 30s. • Although men are visual creatures by nature, looks aren’t necessarily the determining factor for a man in his 30s. Ambition and intelligence can be more attractive than a Barbie doll-looking-girl. • For a man in his 30s, it is all about finding the right girl who can fill certain roles like becoming a good wife and mother—ultimately someone they see as a good enough candidate to put a ring on their finger. • Men are no longer looking to date, but to mate. www.thecitymagazineelp.comA

W
| By: DENISE NELSON-PRIETO photography by: TOMMIE MORELOS | hen you think of Ramen noodles, images of late nights cramming for college finals, or being able to only afford the instant comfort food with highly questionable nutrition (think sodium overdose), may crop
up. Gabriel Valencia and Andres Romero, owners of Kaedama Food
Bus, are here to revamp that image with a fresh take on an old standby.
Valencia explains how the idea was accomplished:
“The idea [to open up the food bus] kind of came to me and my partner at the same time. The idea was actually incepted on Halloween of last year. We were just hanging out together and he [Romero] had just bought the VW bus that’s now our food bus. We’d seen a few pictures online of buses nationwide that had been converted into food buses. We decided it could be a thing for us and we made it happen.”
Kaedama, which is Japanese for “a second helping of noodles” can be found parked outside Monarch and DeadBeach several nights a week. The menu consists of four different Ramen noodle bowls. Each bowl is made with simple ingredients; however, this simplicity belies the elegant, complex flavors of the different broths, which infuse each dish with a savory and unique flavor. “Our best selling [bowl] is the Tonkotsu; it’s the most traditional Japanese Ramen we have on our menu,” Valencia said. “If you go to a Ramen house in Japan, you’re more than likely going to have a bowl of Tonkotsu, which is pork broth Ramen.” Another favorite is the El Ramon, a nod to the ever-popular traditional Mexican soup, posole. Valencia and Romero have transformed the dish by replacing the hominy with noodles.

September, 2016 When the two first started Kaedama, the menu consisted of mostly Ramen-based soup dishes. They then decided to add some lighter fare for more variety. The addition of a burrito and a sandwich added a new dimension to the original offerings. “At first it was going to be just Ramen, but because of the summer and how people might not just want soup, we started adding other things like the sushi burrito and the Banh Mi sandwich,” Romero said. The sushi burrito is simply a huge sushi roll, generously stuffed with sushi rice, carrots, cucumber, cabbage, cream cheese, avocado, spicy mayo and the choice of tofu or crab. The Banh Mi, which is somewhat of a departure from Kaedama’s Japanese theme, is a traditional Vietnamese sandwich served on a roll and filled with an Asian slaw that consists of carrots, cabbage, pickled daikon [Asian radish], sesame oil, spices and your choice of tofu, crab, or pork belly. Artist Spotlight

The Illustration of
Good Vibes | By: JACQUELINE AGUIRRE |
The energy of an artist is fascinating. As soon as one enters the room, the energy is altered from calm and collected to a freer, more eccentric vibe. Something about the unrelenting coolness of an artist’s vibe is infectious and invigorating. Christin Apodaca, 26, is an artist from El Paso who exudes an exhilarating energy. She maintains her cool composure as she sits in the leather armchair across from me. She has a relaxed look, wearing a blue-and-white baseball tee, sand-toned shorts, and caramel-colored moccasins. Her hair is pulled up into a large bun to complete the look. Christin tells me she realized her talent in high school: “That was when I really realized that

September, 2016 She questioned how someone she hadn’t known well enough could have so much faith in her and her work when she herself couldn’t comprehend it; that was the night she changed. Her first opportunity came the same day as David Bowie’s death. Convinced by the perfect opportunity to get her artwork recognized, her first paste was at the Monticello TI:ME building at Mother of Pearl. Chris proudly displayed her first sticker of Bowie himself- a pinkish tone in his face, with deeper pink tones to note the shadows, and the iconic red and blue lightning bolt running across his face.
I got something,” she says. She states she never had to try as hard as anyone else to be good at her talent. After high school, she attended UTEP and UNM in Albuquerque, studying studio art in both schools. It wasn’t until after she graduated and returned home that things began to come together for her artwork. “I needed to get back into the creative time and place,” she states. Christin returned to Creative Kids, a non-profit educational community-based art agency. She volunteered in exchange for supplies to satisfy her artistic needs. After a couple of months, she was asked to become an employee. Two years later, she gleefully continues her career. Although she enjoys her job, she admits her personal work has suffered. “I would just put it back into work.” It would always be something that she could show the kids. “Less personal work and more about work,” she says. A New Year’s resolution was how she decided to make herself known as an artist. “In 2016, so many people are going to know what my art looks like, know what my face looks like, who I am, what I make, why I make stuff,” she says with elation. Behind her newly found determination stood a good friend of hers that she met this year upon her return from New York. Taking in the street art scene with photos of her work, and the exposure of Instagram, she connected with this new friend. “He really believed in the things I was making,” she says. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

usting Fitness Myths
September, 2016
As the fitness industry gains popularity in American culture, more research is being done to debunk those fitness myths we have all heard in the past. Here’s the top five fitness myths busted!
Myth 1
You can’t burn fat and build muscle at the same time. While these two processes are different, they can actually be done at the same time with the proper diet and exercise routine. Research has proven that people who are on a low-calorie, highprotein diet and perform an intense weight lifting program lose body fat while gaining muscle. When weight lifting, you are tearing apart muscle fibers that afterward need to recover. Since your body needs to work hard to recover for up to 24 hours after a weighttraining workout, you are burning fat as well!
www.thecitymagazineelp.com
Fitness
September, 2016
Myth 2
It doesn’t matter what you eat, as long as you restrict the calories. The saying is true that you are what you eat! Sure you can lose some weight from decreasing your calories, but you won’t look as good aesthetically. High protein, low carb, moderate fat diets are the best way to lose weight and to look hard and tight. A low calorie diet will only make you look “skinny fat,” not lean and toned.
Myth 3
Lifting weights will make women bulky.
Not true! Women naturally have less muscle tissue in their bodies, and produce a lower amount of testosterone than men, so even if you’re a girl lifting heavy weights, you will not turn into a female Thor. You will, however, gain a tight and toned physique! The only way some of these women you may see on social media or in magazines that have huge muscles, have this size, is through taking supplements like steroids.
Myth 4
Kids can’t weight train because it will stunt their growth, and it’s pointless anyway because they don’t put on muscle. Recent studies have de-bunked both of those myths. Studies now show that after puberty is the perfect time to have your child start weight training because it doesn’t stunt their growth, but instead it helps with their coordination and strengthening the connection between their nervous system and muscles. But, to be safe, it is best for a child to start with a personal trainer so that someone is teaching and watching to make sure they have good form.
Myth 5
It’s good to do meal replacements with protein shakes or protein bars. Nope. Real food is always best. Nutritionally speaking, shakes and bars never measure up to the nutritional value of real whole food. They tend to contain large amounts of refined sugars, artificial ingredients and fall short of the calcium or fiber that whole foods contain. Not to call out any companies, but there are some companies out there that claim to provide weight-management through meal replacement shakes. The truth is, by choosing a “short-cut” you are never going to really force yourself to make healthy choices or exercise regularly, so it’s not

conducive to long-term success.

TravelYou Websites Didn’t

Look – we get it. Traveling is expensive and if you’re not the spontaneous type, the planning can become time consuming and feel like work itself. There are so many details that come along with traveling: What hotel will you stay at? What site will give you the best airfare? What restaurants should you eat at? Traveling should be fun and I have taken the liberty of finding the best sites to help make planning for your next trip a little bit easier. You want to feel like you’re traveling with the ease of a Victoria Secret model – not like a scatterbrained newbie.
Skyscanner.com This super easy website does exactly what the name implies. It scans the “sky” for the cheapest airfare – and it also has the option to alert you when prices increase or decrease. You still have the option to fly with your preferred airline, but you could be getting it at a cheaper rate. This makes flying in the near future a lot cheaper without you having to check a million sites every day.

Hiskipper.com It is an absolute headache to find hotels for a big group, whether the group is for a wedding, family reunion, or for a business trip. Now it doesn’t have to be (thank goodness). In just three steps, this website is able to find the number of rooms you need for the type of event you need it for. It also gives the option to pay for them all or reserve them so that your other guests can book one. Go ahead and start planning your business trip!

Liligo.com This is better for the spontaneous adventurer out there. This site helps you find cheap airline tickets but it’s not annoying like Expedia or Travelocity. It also has this amazing feature called “Where to go?” where you can enter your destination city, month of travel and the type of weather you want to be in and it will tell you when tickets are the cheapest. This is better for people with flexible travel dates and extremely worth looking into for your next trip!
Turo.com This is the Airbnb of car rentals. You really can rent anything nowadays. Sometimes traveling requires driving, and while you don’t want to put miles on your own car, you also don’t want to spend a lot on car rentals. With Turo, you can rent someone’s car (don’t worry, they go through a checklist) once you get to your destination for up to 30% less than a rental car service.

Gogobot.com Weird name, great site. You’ll want to bookmark this one. If it’s my first time going to a city, I always ask a friend who’s been there for restaurant and site recommendations. Consider this site as your go-to travel expert. Enter the location you’re headed off to and it will tell you the best places to eat and go see. Don’t worry- it’s not all tourist-y things. Thousands of travelers submit their reviews and recommendations and create forums for like-minded travelers to discuss different topics (i.e. historical sites to see, dessert places to try, music venues to go to). Have you bookmarked it, yet?

s September officially brings summer to a close, “Breakfast for Dinner” is a pleasant change for evening cuisine. This hectic time of changing seasons, back-to-school activities and transitions from our lazy summer days of outdoor activities to a more structured environment in the months to come, seems to be a welcomed stranger in our days that lie ahead. The entrees that were chosen for this special time of year not only remind us of the simplicity we need to be mindful of, but also of the comfort of good old-fashioned country food that brings heartwarming memories and a feeling that fall is approaching. With
its quieting cycle of life that causes us to focus inward and reflect on all the richness that friends, family and good homemade cooking
has to offer us, the fall season is a time where great changes take place. Let us enjoy this last bit of sunny weather and look forward to
that magnificent time of year where explosive colors and wondrous landscapes are portrayed on our spectacular canvas of life. Bon Appétit!

Be Prepared to Retire in a Volatile Market | By: BOBBY BLANCO |
In an ideal world, your retirement would be timed perfectly. You would be ready to leave the workforce, your debt would be paid off, and your nest egg would be large enough to provide a comfortable retirement--with some left over to leave a legacy for your heirs. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect world, and events can take you by surprise. In a survey conducted by the Employee Benefit Research Institute, only 44% of current retirees said they retired when they had planned; 46% retired earlier, many for reasons beyond their control.1 But even if you retire on schedule and have other pieces of the retirement puzzle in place, you cannot predict the stock market. What if you retire during a market downturn? Sequencing risk

Determining withdrawals The three-part allocation strategy may help mitigate the effects of a down market by spreading risk over a longer period of time, but it does not help determine how much to withdraw from your savings each year. The amount you withdraw will directly affect how long your savings might last under any market conditions, but it is especially critical in volatile markets. One common rule of thumb is the so-called 4% rule. According to this strategy, you initially withdraw 4% of your portfolio, increasing the amount annually to account for inflation. Some experts consider this approach to be too aggressive--you might withdraw less depending on your personal situation and market performance, or more if you receive large market gains.

withdrawal amount. You still base your withdrawals on a fixed percentage of the remaining

assets, but you limit any increase or decrease from the prior year’s withdrawal amount. This could help prevent you from withdrawing too much after a good market year, while maintaining a relatively steady income after a down market year. Note: Asset allocation is a method used to help manage investment risk; it does not guarantee a profit or protect against investment loss.
Don’t attempt this alone Seek professional advice from your financial advisor to help customize your distribution strategy but don’t forget to include a discussion about wealth transfer planning. In other words, who do you plan to leave your assets to in the event you don’t spend down your entire nest egg when you die? Having a plan in place can make all the difference from worrying that you’ll out live your retirement nest egg to peacefully enjoying your retirement years with your family. 1

I often asked myself why so many Hispanic women under interesting was that fact that some of these mutations were thought to be specific to certain founder populations in Europe, like those of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry. It turns out that approximately 5-10% of cases of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) have a strong hereditary component, 15-20% are “familial”/multifactorial (genes and the environment) and 70-75% are thought to be sporadic (simply put, just happen). The same is approximately true of hereditary colorectal cancer, some of which may present with ovarian or endometrial cancer (Lynch Syndrome). Founder gene mutations from European ancestry can be traced historically to immigration or migration responses to political or world war events. So, what does this have to do with me, you ask? Nothing really, unless you were diagnosed with a specific hereditary cancer or one or more of your immediate family members has been diagnosed with a hereditary cancer.
What are the red flags to look out for? Patients meeting one or more of the following Red Flags should be evaluated for HBOC: • Breast cancer before age 50 • Triple negative receptor breast cancer • Personal or family history of: - Ovarian cancer - Male breast cancer - Two primary breast cancers - Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry with a HBOC-associated cancer (ie.
