“We went to our favorite restaurant, Café Italia, with my parents,” Adamson said. “I’m very close to my parents, and I knew that something was a little suspicious. My dad was like, ‘Is there something special going on this weekend?’ And my mom kind of kicked him underneath the table to switch the conversation. The next day Gustavo flew me out to San Diego, and told me to pick my dream ring out. He didn’t give me a budget or anything, so I just picked out literally my dream ring.”

"We dated for seven years. Everything in our wedding had the number seven symbolically involved in one way or the other” Adamson wanted her wedding to reflect her long relationship, and to incorporate things that she and Ganem loved. “We dated for seven years. Everything in our wedding had the number seven symbolically involved in one way or the other,” said Adamson. Wedding planner Aurora Perez Smith, originally from El Paso but now based out of Houston, helped Adamson’s vision come together. “One of the things Sophia and Gustavo wanted was for it to be indigenous, and for it to be part of the local flavor,” she said. “They didn’t want to come and bring American culture to Guatemala, because that’s not what it’s about. We only travelled with two vendors: my team, and the videography team. Other than that, we hired all local vendors.” “Two hundred guests came to the wedding, and so what we did was plan everything from the guest’s arrival, to transportation, to every single day of the event,” Perez Smith continued. “It happened to be Valentine’s Day, so we did a welcome reception, and a tornaboda after the wedding. We wanted to create things that depending on who you were or who you were travelling with, there was something for everybody.”

35

37

Even before the event itself, guests knew they were in for a treat. “My save the date were custom-made burlap bags with my logo, and everything had an S with a 7 in the middle and a G on the right hand side that I got custom designed,” Adamson said. “We had Antiguan Guatemalan coffee beans inside each bag. My invitation was a custom-made box with my label.” The festivities began on a Thursday morning with a welcome reception. In the evening, a Valentine’s party, complete with mariachis, hors d’oeuvres, and a DJ entertained guests into the late hours. The party theme continued when guests arrived in their rooms for the night. “In each room every night, they would go to bed and each person would have a custom gift in their room,” Adamson said. “One night was a custom lotion and body scrub, another one was a Guatemalan cookie, another one was a door tag, another one was a luggage tag, another a pin. And we had midnight snacks in every room every night.” As Friday morning dawned, custom tours were made available to the guests, including golf, a volcano hike, a sewing tour, and yoga. There was also

a market set up at the hotel by the indigenous people of the area. Friday evening was the rehearsal dinner hosted by Ganem’s parents, giving guests a chance to unwind after a long day. “It was at the largest coffee plantation in Central America,” Adamson said. “We had a huge tent with everyone invited. We had a coffee bar, a cigar bar and a DJ as well. We also had custom vehicles kind of like a safari tour.” The wedding itself took place on Saturday. “I had an outdoor Catholic Mass in the middle of a jungle,” said Adamson. “From there we had buses transferring us

“We had a huge tent with everyone invited. We had a coffee bar, a cigar bar and a DJ as well. We also had custom vehicles kind of like a safari tour.” For most people, three days of nonstop activity would prove to be almost too much, but not for the intrepidly adventurous Adamson. “Sunday morning, everybody woke up and we had a huge brunch with live music as well,” she said. “We were so lucky to observe the Catholic procession of Lent there, which is the second largest in the world. After brunch we walked all twelve blocks of the town together, and we were able to see what the whole experience of Lent is in Guatemala.” Having a front row seat to the bridal business gave Adamson the insight into what makes a perfect wedding, and as she sees it, the answer is the same for everyone. “I just think weddings should be fun, and should be all about the bride and groom,” she said.

Just before the photo, I told Laura to hold on because I needed to get something out of my backpack. I got down on one knee, proposed, and we got a great photo of the proposal." The wedding planning process was one which manifested with some expected pressure, but was juxtaposed by just as much fanciful ease that's found in the thoughts of a little girl who wistfully dreams of lace, veils and flowers years before actually meeting her prince charming. "Growing up as the daughter of a recognized wedding designer, the pressure was mostly on my mom to create the 'dream wedding'," explained Carrillo. "Everybody was intrigued by how we would handle that type of pressure! In the end it was more than anything I could've imagined." On January 14, 2012, Laura Carrillo, wearing a stunning Vera Wang gown, stood beside Octavio "Chops" Corral in front of 375 guests at Coronado Country Club and became husband and wife. "For about ten seconds, I forgot that there were about 200 people in the room," Corral shared as he recounted seeing his bride for the very first time that day. "And

There are a lot of things to consider when one is planning to buy a wedding dress. First research, look at magazines, websites and catalogs (this way you can have a better idea of what you are looking for), set up your budget, and then set up an appointment to look at dresses. All of these are suggestions but the most important thing when buying your dress is that you love it and feel confortable and confident in it.

No matter what you decide to wear you will be the most beautiful and most im‑ portant girl there. Have fun and feel fabulous!

lined body shape. When having a straight body you need to find a dress that creates curves for you, try a drop-waist ball gown or a typical ball gown. An Empire dress can help you create a waist as well and will elongate your body and make you look classy and chic. Plus-Sized: a plus-sized body can be a mixture of plus-sized and another shape. One can be plus-size hourglass, plus-size pear, or plussize straight lined; this allows for a wide variety of choices. Don’t be afraid to wear a fitted hide under too much material and we end up

Maid of Honor If you have been selected to become your friend’s maid of honor, this means that she has chosen you as the dearest and most valued person to take place in one of the most treasured days of her life, and this is a huge compliment. The bride will forever remember this day and your role will play a large part in making those memories something to be treasured for a lifetime. With that being said, we understand the stress that can come with this honorary role, so we have compiled a checklist for you ladies that will not only help your bride, but also you!

For the bride and groom, a car company should be booked up to six months in advance especially if they are looking for a specific type of car. As for the bridal party, a limo or trolley is not required but because they have been so involved it would be nice to make sure that they can unwind and have a good time at the wedding. Cheers to you Woo! You are officially almost relieved of your maid of honor duties. We know it wasn’t easy, but just remember that you helped create a memory that your friend will never forget and a major part of that was thanks to your excellent maid of honor skills. The only thing left for you to do now is to see the bride and groom off and help to clean up with any end of the night tasks but until then, relax and have a good time!

Dress up time Getting ready for the wedding with the bridal party should be a fun and memorable time for everyone! If makeup and hair artists are involved then make sure that everyone gets to the location on time and it would be in yours and everyone’s best interest to provide a little de-stress material … think champagne, a fun playlist to set the mood, and magazines! Inspirations for wedding themes arise from all sorts of muses. Table Occasions (that is, Chia and Claudia) anticipates that the muse of 2014 will be food. Why food? Food choices have defined us for most of eternity. But now our daily food choices are also starting to reflect our worldviews. So food taking a leading role in wedding trends makes a lot of sense as brides and grooms plan an event that will showcase to their friends and families a little bit of what make them special as individuals, and now as a couple. The resulting “wedding table” will be filled with fun ties to food themes and associated customs and cultures. | By: Chia Stewart and Claudia Martinez |

trend is the “food flight.” Food flights are little tastes, perhaps themed such as Spanish tapas, presented on small plates. With this presentation, wedding goers get to experience a variety of highly flavorful foods, without feeling like they have to suck in their tummies or skip dessert. Satisfying – but not over-filling – while sharing a statement about the couple’s taste in food. The resulting table décor for such a food choice would be bold colors and themes, with particular emphasis on Flamenco dancers, bulls and matadors.

know, but are often times broken. First off, don't even think of wearing white dress ladies. The only person allowed the right is the bride. Second, do not, under any circumstances, selfishly attempt to take a attention away from the bride by trying to look like the most fabulously dressed person at the party. If you have done either one of those things your rude levels are peaking. Now that we have that clear, the best advice is to dress appropriately. In other words, it isn't always appropriate or even necessary to show up in your best seven fold tie! Give careful consideration to the location of the event and dress as comfortably as you can, whilst looking like you know what’s up. Remember, if you show up to a dapper and dolled up ceremony looking like you were about to mow the lawn then you should expect people to look you up-anddown a few times throughout the night. So what is appropriate? Well let’s say you’ve got an outdoor beach/ desert wedding to go to. In this case, linen and finer cotton attire is very appropriate. It’s also acceptable to trade in the heels for sandals, and matched pair of shades or a beautiful hat may be necessary to block the UV‘s. However, it is most likely inappropriate to wear black to a daytime wedding and it will make your day feel like hell on earth. Chilly winter wedding? Two or three piece wool suits are super clutch for these kind of weddings for a few reasons: they keep you warm when braving the cold weather, you can remove your sport coat if you are about to bust a move on the dance floor and it is pretty standard wedding attire. Overall, the general rule is to never wear anything stained, shrunk or stretched and certainly nothing too revealing or sexy. Regardless of what "Crunk Cowboy" may think, denim is also seldom acceptable, save for those spaghetti western themed wedding. I’m not going to lie though, I would get a smile on my face if I saw a dude walk in looking like Clint Eastwood in a "Fist Full of Dollars". 154

In the days of the ancient Greeks, bridesmaids would adorn the bride’s head with a wreath of flowers, plants and bulbs of garlic, which were thought to ward of evil spirits. No bride is going to find a bulb of garlic in a wedding flower arrangement today, but the practice of using nature’s blooms to adorn the nuptial ceremony is a beautiful tradition that lives on today and choosing the right flowers is a fundamental responsibility of planning a wedding.

ccording to local floral expert Lynn McPhatter, this is the year of the flower. Roses are timelessly classic, but McPhatter, owner of Fiori Events and Designs located at 5032 Doniphan,

Peonies are highly seasonal though and will be exiting the wedding scene soon, returning again from May to July and once more in November. To accentuate the popular peony, which McPhatter says is flower of the year, the bride-to-be can also incorporate sophisticated garden roses, which are available year round. “I would recommend using peonies and garden roses together since they have a lot of similarities,” McPhatter said. “Garden roses are strong, elegant flowers. hen you’re trying to decide on an engagement ring or wedding band, the choices can be overwhelming. What metal do you want for the band? What size? Cushion cut? Round, princess, oval? Do you want a lot of flash, a simple band, or do you have no idea? After talking to some of El Paso’s experts in this field, we may have a few directions to send you in, after they weighed in their opinions on the most popular rings today.

166

Weddings 2014

Armando Medrano, the owner of Jewel Gallery, offered some insight into specific collections that have been on the rise lately. “Verragio is a signature collection for bridals,” he explains. “They are all specially designed, which makes the ring look totally different than the other ones.” This individuality paired with the fact that Verragio’s rings are hypoallergenic has made them extremely popular in recent years. They can offer high quality but very unique rings for brides that want to make sure their ring is one-of-a-kind. Parade Jewels and Designs is another trend Medrano has seen; they are particularly known for their Lyria collection. This collection was featured in The Vow, in the floral band that Rachel McAdams wears, and has brought the collection into the limelight. Their bridals all come in 18-carat white or yellow gold, which Medrano says sets them apart from the more mainstream jewelers. Not only have Verragio and Parade been featured in films, but they have also paired with David Tutera – the WE TV wedding expert who is coming to El Paso in February - in various shows around the world. His endorsement and partnership with them have only added to their prestige and popularity.

veryone dreams of their wedding day, the one day that’s solely meant for you and your hubby, where you can flaunt

your love and happiness for all the world to see. But what about the days leading up to that magical moment? There’s planning and calling and booking and photos and stress, but pre-wedding parties help relieve that stress, and give you a little time to contemplate the rest of your life. Historically, the Bachelor party was a dinner the groom threw for his friends before his wedding day on his last night as a single man, followed by an eventful evening of revelry. In recent years the girls have joined in this tradition, as Bachelorette parties are now just as popular. Presently, there are a wide variety of pre-wedding celebrations you can enjoy with your best friends. There are so many ways to get creative and have a wonderful send off into the next chapter of your life. If you have been chosen as the honorable Maid of Honor or Best Man, you have the duty of putting this magical night together. You need invitations, party favors, decorations, drinks, treats, and the meeting place for this celebration. First decide on a theme, there are so many options but try to get creative, it’s an event you never want your best friends to forget. Try the Olympics, make every game revolve around the bride or groom, and have each friend be a different country and offer different types of medals or prizes. There’s also a vintage party, choose the Bride or Groom’s favorite era or genre and base all your party essentials around that. Some good options are disco, 70’s, 80’s, greaser, film noir, cowboy, prohibition, or even futuristic. Step outside the box and try a 007 theme, make all your drinks “shaken not stirred” and dress to impress. Try a mustache party and give everyone their own fuzzy ‘stache. Maybe a “His and Her” party labeling drinks and candies and cakes, or a black and white party with snazzy decora-

Dear The City Magazine,

This is a story about a girl who came along and flipped my world upside down. It’s hard to find a starting point in our relationship as the definitive moment that we saw each other as more than friends. I met Kandolite at my first fight in El Paso (Battle of the Badges) and had just won in the first round. I was making my way through the crowd of fellow firefighters when it happened. The sight of her was a hit stronger than anything I had ever faced in the ring. There she was, standing there with a gorgeous Hollywood smile and this long brown hair that couldn’t be real life... I was done for. I could barely get my name out, but it turned out we already knew who each other were through some mutual friends. She congratulated me on my fight and a quick goodbye was said, but thank God there’s more to this story. The next year saw us randomly running into each other at local restaurants or bars. I saw her when hundreds of other firefighters and I climbed the Wells Fargo building six times on the 10-year anniversary of 9/11, and at the memorial that was held afterward. She wasn’t there on behalf of her job at KFOX; she was there because that’s the kind of person she is. Fast forward to July 2012, and I’m getting off a plane after a weeklong vacation in Austin. My brother picked me up and asked if I wanted to get a drink before going home. I said no, but he convinced me otherwise. After that, I was ready to go home, but he wanted to go to Whiskey Dicks. After some back and forth he somehow convinced me to go. I remember walking in and dreading the crowd and then all of a sudden...there she was. Again. She was wearing boots, shorts, and a long-sleeve loose shirt with that beautiful long brown hair falling over her shoulders. I made my way over and said hello, bought her a drink, and went about finding my crowd. I met up with some fellow firefighters but my eyes never left her. She was there with a friend getting bombarded by admirers, as usual. On my way to the bar I passed a particularly aggressive group of guys, all of whom were staring at Kandolite and working up whatever courage they could. I knew that this moment was my line in the sand, my Rubicon. I could either turn away and hope fate would intertwine us again, or finally see what the universe had

been trying to show me for the past year. I pushed through everyone surrounding her and asked, “I’m sorry to have kept you waiting, would you care to dance?” She followed me to the floor and I didn’t let her go the rest of the night. But even the greatest nights have to end, and last call was approaching. I asked her for one last dance, and she agreed. Now, call it what you want—fate, destiny, or a higher power—what happened next was the biggest sign I’ve ever received and I refused to let it pass me by. The DJ played Thompson Square’s “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not,” and we shared our first kiss on the upper stage for the whole crowd to see. I saw Kandolite every day until I was sent to Ft. Benning, GA for four months. She was my one ten-minute phone call per week and was there to pick me up at the airport and bring me back home. I wrote her everyday I was away, and will continue to write her letters as long as she’ll read them. I hope you choose me to propose in your magazine. But it’s not about choosing me. In fact, none of this is for me. Getting married isn’t something you do for yourself; it’s a conscious decision you make for your partner. It’s saying that you have seen all the good, bad, and the ugly and want to live in that perfect storm of emotions forever. It’s saying you want to show that person you truly are the only one in the world who was put here just for them. This is about a girl who had a chance to take her skills, personality, and beauty out of town but chose to stay in El Paso because she loves her city. Hers is the face we all wake up looking forward to seeing over our coffee and newspaper. She’s the girl who chose to give up a glamorous lifestyle working in TV news to work for the Humane Society and give a voice to those who cannot tell us what’s wrong or what hurts. So, in closing, this isn’t for me, it’s for her. Everything I do is for her; please help me give her something she deserves. Sincerely, Chris

Kandolite Nichole Flores,

Will you marry me?

My love, As you read this, I hope that I’ve made one of your dreams come true. I’ve tried to find a way to eloquently state this but I cannot put this in any simpler terms. I love you and I want you to be mine forever. You are the center of my world and the shoreline that guides me home, the foundation for the rest of my life, and the future mother of my children. My only wish is that I had more than one lifetime to give you, because one is simply not enough. But I will do everything I can with the time we have to love you completely. Yours, Chris
