TENNIS TIP
WHAT TYPE OF STRING SHOULD I BE USING?
By Gene Paul Lascano, Director of Racquets
One of the most common questions tennis players ask in pro shops across the country is, "Do I need to restring my racquet?" or "What type of string should I be using?" Many players tend to overlook the need for restringing, waiting for their strings to break before making any changes. In general, a good rule of thumb is that the number of times you play per week should match the number of times you restring your racquet each year. For example, if you play five times a week, you should aim to restring your racquet five times a year. While there are other factors to consider, the type of string you use plays a key role in how often your racquet needs restringing Let’s take a look at two of the most popular string types: Multifilament and Monofilament
MULTIFILAMENT STRINGS
Multifilament strings, such as natural gut, synthetic gut, or nylon, are known for their excellent feel and playability. Players who rely on finesse, touch, and feel often prefer these strings. Their high elasticity also provides added power, making them a good choice for players who want to enhance their shot speed Additionally, multifilament strings are often recommended for players recovering from arm injuries or who struggle with conditions like tennis elbow, as they offer a softer, more comfortable feel.
While multifilament strings hold tension well, their main drawback is durability. These strings tend to move more with each shot and can fray over time Despite this, they are the most popular choice among club-level players because of their comfort and playability
TENNIS TIP (CONTINUED)
MONOFILAMENT STRINGS
Monofilament strings, such as polyester or kevlar, are highly durable but tend to lose tension more quickly Players who choose these strings need to restring their racquets more frequently, even before the strings break, to maintain optimal performance Polyester strings, in particular, are the most common choice among professional players due to their durability and ability to generate spin and control However, these strings are not ideal for beginners or players with arm injuries because of their stiffness, which, while adding durability, can also reduce comfort and playability Monofilament strings are favored by players with long, fast strokes, as they help control the ball and enhance spin. Some variations, like textured or
HYBRID STRINGING: THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
A popular trend in recent years is "hybrid stringing," where players combine different types of strings to balance durability and playability The most common hybrid setup is using polyester strings in the mains (the vertical strings) and multifilament strings in the crosses (the horizontal strings). This combination allows players to enjoy the durability of polyester while retaining the comfort and feel of multifilament strings
Some professionals, like Roger Federer, prefer to hybrid with natural gut in the mains and polyester in the crosses. This setup combines the power and comfort of natural gut with the control and spin potential of polyester Hybrid stringing offers a wide range of customization options, enabling players to fine-tune their racquet's feel to match their unique playing style. However, the abundance of hybrid combinations can sometimes lead to confusion, with players overthinking their choices or selecting strings that don’t work well together It’s important to experiment and find what feels best for your game. twisted polyester, offer additional benefits for high-level players looking to maximize their performance.
WHICH STRING IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
Both multifilament and monofilament strings offer distinct advantages and drawbacks, and what works for one player may not work for another. If you're unsure about what’s best for your racquet, feel free to visit our Racquet Center. Our staff is always happy to provide expert advice and help you choose the right string for your needs
Happy hitting!
