PASSIONFLOWER Very soothing - A very calming to the mind tea, due to Passionflower having the flavone chrysin. This tea also provides people relief of anxiety. Try a cup before bed to calm yourself.

OOLONG

YERBA MATE

Use as a metabolism booster and for weight loss - This tea boosts your metabolism for up to two hours after drinking it, because it contains the unique antioxidant catechin. Oolong tea also contains poly-phenols, which help block fat building enzymes, leading to sustained weight loss.

For weight loss and cravings - This particular tea is full of antioxidants and vitamins. Since it contains mateine, a fat fighting compound, it speeds up your metabolism, provides an extra energy boost, and rids cravings. Enjoy up to 4 hours of clean and stable fresh energy!

BLACK

WHITE

CHAMOMILE Discover a new calmness within you. This is great for skin irritations as well. What a treasure to have on hand! This tea is known to be a “night time tea”, being that it tends to relieve insomnia and encourages people to enjoy a restful night sleep. This tea also relieves stress and relaxes nerves as well, so it is known to ease anxiety and depression. Chamomile is also used as a disinfectant and works well on accelerating the healing process of minor wounds. It’s also great for a variety of skin conditions, including skin rashes (even diaper rash), acne, sunburns, insect bites, and acne scars. Don’t be afraid to boil a cup of this tea, allowing it to warm to a comfortable temperature, so you can use on your skin where needed. Four cups of strong tea for per bath is recommended. Enjoy!

For fresh breath and diabetes - Filled with poly-phenols, black tea freshens your breath and stops plaque from clinging to your teeth by inhibiting mouth bacteria. Black tea also stops belly fat before it starts, due to having polysaccharides. These are glucose inhibiting properties, which may also help in preventing diabetes.

GINSENG GINGER If you suffer from headaches - This tea provides relief from headaches in about the same time that a synthetic pill would work. This is because ginger is an anti-inflammatory agent. Drink a cup of warm tea when you feel a headache coming on for near immediate relief.

How was tea discovered? After a leaf fell into the boiling water of the ancient Chinese ruler Shen Nung, known as a “Divine Healer”. That means it is nearly 5000 years old!

Tea arrived to England in 1652, the same year the first coffeehouse opened. However, tea became the favorite of England, due to the fact that it was easier to make.

“Fannings” or “Dust” are the lowest rankings that tea can achieve. This tea is found at the bottom of the tea barrels and found in supermarkets everywhere.Though the tea may add color to your cup, it lacks flavor.

4

For anti-aging and weight loss Due to being a less processed tea, the poly-phenols are extra potent. White tea contains ECGC, an antioxidant which slows the aging process and also prevents new fat cells from forming.

Needing a libido booster? If you desire a libido boost, this is the tea to drink. It contains ginsenosides, a compound that affects gonadal tissues. This increases sexual satisfaction in both partners, as well as increasing the sperm count in men.

Transparent eyes reflecting unspoken thoughts we sit and chat with fraudulent smiles carefully masquerading our minds By: Samantha

I want to tune my breathing to your guitar Watch your chest rise and fall with the tide By: Samantha

A LOVE LOST In the splinter of my mind’s eye I cross a sky and land in a dream Contrails of azure and Merlot mist Followed by satin steamed kisses Winged with desire and love lost. Where shall I travel? Where will it end? Or in that second in the splinter of the mind’s eye Can I start again? The darkness has always trailed close behind but in those azure skies what do I find? A sanctuary of memories filled with the once lost each of whom have bared the same cost. The walls all stand with white so high. The ceiling opens to reveal the sky. I watch as angels and birds fly by And I close my eyes and begin to cry. Up in that sky plays a lonely heartfelt tune Reminding me that I will see you soon. I look around and wonder why It was me that had to die. Then I think with a heart of love that I could not bear it to send one of my children above. I find a chair and begin to rest and deeply hope the left behind be blessed. In this place I’m not so alone. I even dare to call this home. Here I will stay and watch as more souls stray in Waiting for everyone so we can join hands and all start again. By: Kayla YOUR POETRY IS WELCOME!

S

ummer is in full bloom, so now is the perfect time to get a few things done that need to be tended to. This month we are sharing some advice with our readers, with more coming next month. If you take heed to this list, you will be better off with each passing month!

DECK/PATIO/STEPS: Take a close look at these areas for wear and tear, loose boards or nails, holes, and general deterioration. Who wants to step on a loose board and get smacked in the face with it? Then off to the dentist you go, driven by your spouse who said “I told you to fix that last year you idiot!”.

APPLIANCES:

PLAY EQUIPMENT: It’s easy to say “Go out and play! Have fun!”. However, when was the last time you took a few minutes to actually check what your kids and their friends are playing on? Check regularly for defects and loose equipment. Protecting the ground of their playing surface with at least 9” of wood chips or mulch can help soften falls and prevent broken bones.

• Respond quickly to all leaks, even minor ones, so they don’t become a major problem. Unless you like to slip n’ slide in your house. • Replace any rubber hosing on your dishwasher and washer with reinforced braided stainless steel hoses. Rubber dries and cracks, plus if you have mice they can chew through it and hide their cheese. • Clean your clothes dryer! Both the exhaust and the damper. If you can catch a kid to squeeze behind it and under it to grab some dust, all the better!

WALKWAYS AND DRIVEWAYS: Summer is a great time to repair cracked, broken, or uneven drives and walkways. Providing a smooth and even walking surface to yourself and your guests is very important. Prevention is the key here, but you need to be proactive. When we were younger, we would laugh as we stepped over the cracks “or break your Grandma’s back”. If you don’t fix those, that little rhyme you sang will come true.

EXTERIOR TO DO LIST: GUTTERS: Clean debris from your gutters and downspouts while checking for any damage on or near the roof. Those things are hoarders!!!

SAFETY TIPS OF THE MONTH:

ROOF: Roofing materials that are either missing, worn, or broken (or all three if you are a procrastinator), allow water to penetrate your roof structure. This allows for deterioration that could have been prevented! Summer is the perfect time for a roof checkup. You can either inspect it yourself, or even better, call a professional.

If you don’t have a carbon monoxide detector, considering skipping a night out and invest in one per level of your home. Install the detector at least 20’ from any fuel burning appliance.

MASSAGE - A HEALING TOUCH We would like to introduce you to the power of massage, perhaps even encourage you to actually make some time for yourself once a week. By taking a moment to actually learn about massage, you are already giving a gift to yourself. Not only are massages good for the physical you, they are good for your emotional, mental, and spiritual self as well. So consider taking some time out of your busy life to relax, as you learn to enjoy and accept what is best for you. Welcome to your discovery of the soothing, healing touch that massage offers. Below is an introduction to the benefits of massage and how it can help you. REDUCE AND BETTER MANAGE YOUR STRESS - Massage is relaxing and reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol, therefore helping to soothe anxiety and depression. It also results in lowered blood pressure, by lifting your spirit. TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEADACHES - We all get them from time to time, so prevention here is key. Thanks to massage, headaches can be alleviated. Just one 60 minute massage a week can help decrease your headache pain, along with assisting you in getting a grip on the stress and anger that may accompany your headache. IMPROVE YOUR SLEEP - Surrendering to a massage promotes healthy sleep due to its affect on delta waves, the waves that are connected to deep sleep. If you dose off during a massage, you’ll now know why! A better sleep means a happier, more productive, less stressed you! USE AS AN IMMUNITY BOOSTER - Massage has been linked to allowing the immune system to function better, by increasing disease fighting white blood cells. Regular massages will keep you on the 12

healthier side of life, so prevention is key. Choose natural immunity, by allowing your body to do what it was born to do naturally in the first place. BECOME MORE ALERT - Just one 15 minute chair massage is shown to boost your brainpower, so if you’ve got a big test coming up, perhaps you should think about sitting yourself down for a massage first so you can score a higher grade. EASE TREATMENTS OF CHRONIC ILLNESSES - If you or a loved one has a serious illness or is undergoing treatments, studies show that massage is very beneficial in relieving symptoms of pain, fatigue, nausea, anxiety, and depression. Take this day to take care of someone you love, by introducing them to the wonderful benefits that massage has to offer. Show some love! TREAT YOUR SORE MUSCLES AND EASE YOUR PAIN - Inflammation can be reduced with just a short 10 minute massage. After a work out, how about treating yourself out? Your body will thank you for it and you will actually keep working out, rather than saying “I’m too sore”. Massage is linked to decreased pain and stiffness, which increases your range of motion. The benefits of massage are about as strong as acupuncture, yoga, exercise, and medications. People tend to feel and function much better after receiving a massage. Your Skin + A Facial = A Confidant, Healthier You!

O

ur skin changes over time depending on our age, the weather, and of course hormones. So keeping your skin healthy and fresh should come naturally right? Wrong! Many of us, no matter our age, are unaware of how to properly care for our skin in general. Believe it or not, our faces are no exception. With what’s on the market today, you may be your own science project, without even meaning to be. We want to introduce you to the various components that make up a facial. They are to cleanse, exfoliate, steam, massage, and moisturize. Close your eyes and imagine it being done to you now. Relax and let the process begin. It feels good doesn’t it? • Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells, causing skin to have a clearer, brighter appearance and allowing moisture to penetrate the skin easier.

• A facial and scalp massage will increase blood flow, which will plump up your skin and encourage lymphatic drainage. This adds youth and vitality to an overall dull complexion, while adding shine to your hair. • Moisturizing improves your skin’s appearance, presenting a more youthful look. How you care for your skin each day is more important than you may think. We all like a quick fix, but allowing a professional to step in to educate and assist you can reap long term benefits. However, many people think that facials are a luxury, something that they don’t need by saying “My skin is perfectly fine”. In that moment, they may be right, but we all age. A deep cleansing, exfoliation and hydration is a process that your skin deserves. Facials remove toxins and dirt that have been accumulating for

weeks, months and even years. A good example is that of our teeth. It’s very natural for us to brush them, day after day, year after year. It’s also a given that we send ourselves to the dentist for “that yearly check up” - better yet, every six months for a routine cleaning. So doesn’t it seem to be a wise choice to take some time for yourself, by having a professional step in and help you feel more confidant, with a complexion that you are happy with saying is yours? MORE THAN A SCENT: ESSENTIAL OILS WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS? Essential oils are the natural aromatic compounds found in plants. They are produced from either steam distillation or cold pressing of plants from the flowers, leaves, roots, stems, bark and other plant elements. Most people think essential oils are “oils”, when in fact they are not oily feeling by any means. The majority of essential oils are clear, though some oils such as orange, patchouli, or lemongrass have a soft yellow to amber hue. Being highly concentrated, a little oil goes a long way! Essential oils are known to provide therapeutic benfits, both psychological and physical. These benefits are achieved through inhalation and application to the skin area in a diluted form.

FEATURED OILS OF THE MONTH “LEMONGRASS & SOOTHING BLEND” Both of these essential oils not only smell delicious, but they are a great alternative for those that prefer natural healthcare alternatives in todays world. Lemongrass naturally repels insects, can be used in cooking, and also helps soothe pain in sore joints and muscles. For those that prefer a citrus to a mint aroma, this is the perfect choice! Lemongrass is known for its antibacterial, antibiotic, antiseptic, antiviral, astringent, diuretic, and disinfectant properties. It is also used for allergies, asthma, cold and flu

symptoms, constipation, fever, hypertension, sore throat, stomach ache, stress, and throat infections. The second oil is actually a blend of oils that contains a mixture of certified pure therapeutic oils that ease tired and sore joints and muscles. It contains Wintergreen, Camphor, Peppermint, Blue Tansy, German Chamomile, Helichrysum, and Osmanthus. Blended together, these oils are known to help with arthritic pain, bruises, carpel tunnel, headaches, inflammation, joint pain, migraine, muscle pain, sprains, and rheumatism. This blend is also available in a rub, which is a convenient way to apply oils to large areas, such as backs. When using the oil instead of the rub, fractionated coconut oil is the recommended carrier oil. If you are interested in learning more about the benefits of essential oils, please contact me. Classes and special offers are posted to Facebook throughout the month. Come see me between now through September at the Tuesday Market in Eagle River!
