1 lb ground beef

3/4 tsp pepper

1 cup diced sausage and cubed ham

1 (16 oz) can each of dark and light kidney beans

1 large sweet onion, diced

2 (32 oz) cans of baked beans (your choice)

1 (16 oz) can tomato sauce

1 (16 oz) can of diced tomatoes or 1 cup freshly diced

4 TBS ketchup 3 TBS mustard

2 cups corn, fresh or canned

1/2 - 3/4 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 to 1 cup diced green bell pepper

4 TBS worchestire sauce

1/2 lb crisp bacon (optional)

1 tsp salt

Cook bacon to a crisp, dice up and set aside. Brown the ground beef, then add the ham and sausage. Brown until done. Add your onion, green pepper, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Cook about 2 to 3 minutes more. Reduce heat, then add all of the beans, brown sugar, tomato sauce and tomatoes, ketchup, mustard, and corn. Mix well and cook for about 30 minutes to heat through. This is a very easy dish to make and you can adjust the ingredients to fit your taste very easily. It makes a large pot of beans! Serve with a side of french bread and a salad. This dish is delicious! By: Noni

Organic Spinach Leaves

Your favorite Feta cheese

Pick two: Fresh blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, red grapes

Very thin slices of Swiss cheese (optional)

Pick one: Pistachios/ Almond slices/Pecans/ Chopped Walnuts

Poppy Seed Dressing

1 (16oz) can mandarin oranges

In a large and deep bowl, pour in about 1/4 cup of the dressing to the coat bowl. Add spinach leaves and layer the rest of your ingredients. Toss gently with salad utensils and drizzle more dressing on to suit your taste. Serve salad immediately. When you scoop out the leaves, you will see that all the fruit and nuts rest more on the bottom of your bowl. Serve those as the “topping” on each serving! By: Gabrielle

YOUR POETRY IS WELCOME! E-mail submissions to thecommons@outlook.com

WHY AM I SO ASTONISHED? Why am I so astonished? What was I thinking When violence came to call?

Star Light Star Bright I want to move to Venice, or maybe even Rome I want to find a special place where quiet is my home As moonlight dances in my heart

It was invited, after all. Our culture flirted with it in our movies and our art.

and raindrops fill my eyes

And now it comes eagerly to tear us apart.

My mind is full of memories dressed naked in disGuise

Though powerful, its nasty deeds are done;

As blindness fills a future that I don’t want to see

It strikes the weak and unexpected, our children. To this news we cry out loud and beat our breast, Still at the theaters we watch the violence we like best.

With lack of sheer desire locked in someone else’s greed if I had a wish or two, please grant me only one

But in real life we act perplexed as if we didn’t know,

That love will come to fill my light

That the behavior planted in our brain would surely grow.

Before darkness thinks it’s won

How could this happen to a nation as smart as Thee?

Star Light Star Bright

Remember: Be careful little eyes what you see. By: Carol Welty Roper

I really need a star tonight

GREEN TEA For overall wellness and help with allergies - Bursting with EGCG, a phytonutrient that increases the hormone CCK, this tea creates a feeling of complete satisfaction. Due to its high level of EGCG, it is also a very effective cancer fighter. Studies have shown that drinking this popular tea may actually prevent the onset of, or slow the progression of dementia as well.

NETTLE TEA

LICORICE ROOT TEA

For those with allergy issues - If you would like to prevent allergy attacks, this tea has the antihistamine properties you need to do so. Whether it be a stuffy nose, or itchy watery eyes, this tea can help. Being a very dense tea, it is best brewed for about 15 to 20 minutes. It is best to make a large kettle to set in the fridge during allergy season. For a fresh sweet or sour taste, add a slice of lemon, lime, or orange rind.

For all you sweet tooth lovers out there! Licorice root is actually sweeter than sugar with zero calories. Personally, I prefer chocolate! This herb is also an anti-inflammatory with bacterial killing properties as well. This tea is also very soothing for sore throats.

PEPPERMINT TEA For those with digestive challenges - This tea is delicious, whether it be for a festive holiday occasion, or for miserable digestive issues. Sipping on this potent tea will provide relief of constipation, offering improved motility in your GI tract.

WE CARRY A WIDE ASSORTMENT OF ORGANIC SPICES, HERBAL AND LOOSE TEAS, ESSENTIAL OILS, HERBS AND NATURAL PRODUCTS!

SAFFLOWER TEA Maintain a healthy heart - Help prevent heart disease by decreasing inflammation in your arteries. Safflower is a powerful flower with antioxidants, which keep your arteries flexible and less likely to clog. Enjoy a cup of this tea daily with a spoonful of blueberries on the side.

Black and green teas both come from the same plant, Camellia Sinensis. The difference is how the leaves are processed: Green tea leaves are steamed and dried, while black tea leaves are fully oxidized. The first tea bags were inadvertently made from hand-sewn silk muslin bags, by Thomas Sullivan, a tea and coffee merchant from New York City. Hot or cold? Approximately 85% of the tea Americans drink is over ice! Teabags first began appearing commercially around 1904, and quickly shipped around the world.

ALASKA HUMANE SOCIETY ALASKA ADOPT-A-CAT SHELTER HUMANE SOCIETY THE SHELTER...We accept cats on the basis of need, not adoptability. We provide all of our cats with nurturing care, nutritious food, medical attention as needed, and a loving home until they are adopted. While not every cat is always adopted, those who are not stay with us as long as they live. We are a no-kill shelter. We currently house about 150 cats, all of which are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, tested for feline leukemia, and microchipped. Our cats roam freely through the shelter, enjoying the space and the ramps that allow them to travel upstairs and downstairs. Some of them form lasting friendships with other cats. Scan the QR code with your smart phone.

Research proves secondhand tobacco smoke is harmful for pets: Dogs are 3 times more likely to develop lung or nasal cancer. Dogs can have allergic reactions. Scratching, biting and chewing their skin might not be from fleas or food allergies. Cigarette butts are lethal. Even a very few accidentally ingested by a pet can be lethal. Cats have higher rates of feline lymphoma, a deadly form of cancer and squamous cell oral cancer. When cats groom, they injest poisons from secondhand smoke that have settled on their fur. Cats can develop breathing problems, inflamed lungs and asthma. Birds can also suffer from pneumonia or lung cancer. Other health risks include eye, skin, heart & fertility problems. Keep your pets safe! Protect them from secondhand smoke. Alaska’s Tobacco Quit Line 1-800-QUIT-NOW 1-800-784-8669

Classes for newborns to age 7 Prep piano for 4.5 - 7 Why is music such a great teaching tool?

Music stimulates the brain, forging neural pathways in all domains of learning: cognitive, emotional, social, and physical. Your child’s entire brain in involved when he or she participates in music and movement activities.

Music is obviously a passion of yours. At what age did you take interest in the piano? Yes, working with children and music while raising my own children is my passion. I was about 6 years of age when I learned to play the organ, which was my first instrument. Soon after, I picked up a song book and started to play songs! What are your some of your music experiences over the years? I sang in many Choirs and earned a Gold Music Award in 1988. How long have you been teaching young children? I have been working with small children since 1988 in a preschool setting, as well as during summer school with special needs children. I discovered Kindermusik, which I found to be an incredible music program, in my search of activities for young children. I wanted to start my own business and reach out to families to share my love of music with them, I felt it was the perfect opportunity. After much training, I became a Licensed Kindermusik Educator in 2008. Do any of your children play the piano or another kind of instrument? In 1991 I had my first born child Quinn. I would sing and dance with him all the time and shared many story hours with him as well. Quinn is now 23 years old and plays numerous instruments. He absolutely loves music. In 2004, Dave and I (my husband of 25 years), decided it was time to expand our family, so we decided to be Foster parents. We were fortunate to be able to bring our daughter Brandi home that year, and one year later, Chyanne came into our lives. We adopted both of them! Both of our daughters love piano and many other instruments as well. They both love to dance and sing there hearts out!

I bet they were ďŹ rst introduced to the piano in utero! I heard that when you play music to your baby in utero, the baby actually recognizes the tune when they are born. Yes, children can feel musical rhythms while in the womb. They hear your voice when you sing to them too! There are massage exercises that I can show expecting moms to be.
