Day 3. Ho Chi Minh City, Long Tan OR Cu Chi Tunnels. This morning, choose from two Signature Invitations and learn about Vietnam’s recent past. On the first Signature Invitation, you will journey to Ba Ria and learn about the Battle of Long Tan. Afterwards, attend a memorial service at Long Tan Cross, set in a rubber plantation where soldiers lost their lives. On the second alternative, pay a visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels, an incredible tunnel network constructed by Vietnamese resistance fighters during the war. These tunnels served as Viet Cong hiding spots, supply and communication routes, hospitals and weapon caches. During your visit here, you may have time to walk a short section of one of the tunnels. Tonight, you will be treated to a tantalising and exclusive Luke Nguyeninspired degustation dinner, complete with matching wines, at Xu Restaurant, a true highlight of your journey. BLD

Day 5. Cai Be, Sa Dec. A local boat will take you to the lovely river land town of Cai Be today. Once here, step ashore to visit the French Gothic Cathedral as well as the colourful port area, which is filled with colonial buildings and delightful flower gardens.

Afterwards, visit a local rice paper manufacturer for insight into how Vietnamese rice paper is made, then enjoy lunch back on board as your ship cruises past scenes of charming rural life towards the quaint town of Sa Dec. This is where French writer Marguerite Duras met her Vietnamese-Chinese lover, Huynh Thuy Le. On arrival, tour Huynh Thuy Le’s old house and learn the story behind Marguerite Duras’ best-selling novel, The Lover. Later, visit a traditional Cao Dai temple. Tonight, enjoy dinner on board your luxurious ship. BLD Day 6. Tan Chau, Evergreen Island, Border Crossing. This morning after a tantalising breakfast, disembark your river ship and transfer to a small boat for a journey along the tiny tributaries that snake around Tan Chau. Cruise past a floating fish farm, then step ashore for a rickshaw tour of Tan Chau. Ride past shops, rice wine rooms and friendly locals eager to say hello. Later, step back in time during a visit to a local evergreen island and see authentic rural Mekong life. The remainder of today is then spent on board your luxurious river ship. This afternoon, perhaps take in a fruit-carving demonstration by one of the ship’s chefs while border formalities are carried out and you cross into Cambodia. Alternatively, watch daily life on the Mekong unfold from

After entering Cambodia, your ship will continue to cruise overnight towards the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh. BLD Day 7. Phnom Penh, Freedom of Choice. Perhaps rise early to take in Phnom Penh’s river promenade as your ship nears the capital. After breakfast, disembark in Phnom Penh and embark on your chosen activity. Perhaps enjoy a guided tour of the dazzling white and gold Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, which is located on the south side of the palace complex and houses many national treasures. Alternatively, you may wish to discover some of Cambodia’s sobering history with a moving excursion to the infamous Killing Fields, before visiting the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, located on the site of the Khmer Rouge’s notorious Security Prison 21 (S-21). Here, you’ll learn of the atrocities inflicted upon Cambodians during Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge regime in the mid-to-late 1970s. Your other options are a visit to the National Museum of Cambodia; or a guided city tour in a tuk tuk which takes in sights including the Independence Monument and Wat Phnom, a sacred Buddhist pagoda. Later today, your cruise continues on to remote Koh Chen, a small village specialising in silver and copperware. On arrival, you'll visit some of the home-workshops that manufacture handmade copper souvenirs. While here, you may like to take the chance to purchase a memento as a reminder of your journey. BLD Day 9. Oudong, Kampong Tralach. Disembark in Prek K’dam this morning and travel by coach on a morning tour of Oudong, a town with a fascinating history that was the capital of Cambodia from 1618 until 1866 and is a World Heritage-listed site. During your time here, visit the monastery for a special Buddhist blessing experience, sure to be a highlight of your holiday. Afterwards, you will continue to Kampong Tralach for a visit to Wat Kampong Tralach Pleu before an exciting ox-cart ride takes you through rice fields and a small village to rejoin your ship. BLD Day 10. Kampong Chhnang. Enjoy an authentic glimpse into the local way of life along the Mekong River today with a small-boat excursion into the wetlands near Kampong Chhnang. After your time exploring the landscape here, you’ll return to your ship and cast off towards Prek K’dam. After your time discovering these incredible monuments you will return to Siem Reap where you are able to dine at one of the five restaurants which have been selected for you. LD Day 3. Maubin. Awake today to the glorious scenery along the Irrawaddy River as you begin sailing upstream through the delta region. Disembark for a walking tour, and learn about the town’s fascinating history. Day 4. Danuphyu, Zalon. Your Myanmar adventure continues today as you journey north along the Irrawaddy Delta. Stop to explore Danuphyu, a small town where the revered General Maha Bandula led a famous Burmese defensive against the British troops during the First Anglo-Burmese War. Disembark to visit the Monastery of Maha Bandula and a home cheroot-making workshop. Later, cruise to the delta town of Zalon. You’ll set off on a guided tour, taking in the town’s many colonial-style wooden houses and large tropical gardens. Visit the Pyi Taw Pagoda which houses a famous bronze Buddha that was once stolen by the British Army and later returned by the order of Queen Victoria. BLD

Day 7. Thayetmyo. Cruise to Thayetmyo, a pleasant port town that once sat on the British colonial border between Upper Myanmar and Lower Myanmar. Thayetmyo has a fascinating military history and is home to one of two memorial burial grounds of Ottoman soldiers in Myanmar. The Ottoman soldiers buried here died after they became prisoners of war during the Middle Eastern Theatre of World War I, and were sent to Myanmar as British POWs. During your time in the town, step out to wander the streets, take in the colonial houses and visit Myanmar’s oldest golf course, established by the British in 1877. Return to your ship and continue cruising upstream. BLD Day 8. Minhla, Magwe. The next stop on your Myanmar journey brings you to the town of Minhla, the site of a significant battle during the Third Anglo-Burmese War and the inspiration for a Rudyard Kipling poem. Take a small boat to visit Gwechaung and Minhla forts, built by Italian engineers in 1860 to keep British forces out of Myanmar. While here, you will learn how the British captured these forts during a war which saw Myanmar ultimately lose its independence. Later, cruise to the sleepy delta town of Magwe and visit the bustling market here. After, return to your ship for dinner and a puppet show. BLD

Established “by the British Irrawaddy Flotilla Company in the late 19th century, Pyay originally served as a transshipment point for cargo being moved between Upper and Lower Myanmar. See a selection of gilded pagodas, including the imposing Shwesandaw Pagoda. One metre taller than Shwedagon Pagoda, Shwesandaw “is one of Myanmar’s more important Buddhist sites. It is said to contain some of the Buddha’s hairs, with its name meaning “Golden Hair Relic”. Later, travel to the ancient ruins at the old Pyu kingdom capital Sri Ksetra, meaning ‘City of Splendour’. A World Heritage-listed site, Sri Ksetra is home to 1,500 year-old old stupas which are among the world’s earliest Buddhist monuments. Some of the religious art here indicates several distinct occupations with earlier influences that stem from southeast India and later influences from southwest India. According to legend, the kingdom was founded by two blind brothers who regained their sight with the help of an ogress. BLD

Day 9. Salay. Today you’ll cruise to the village of Salay, a colourful religious centre with its origins in the 12th and 13th centuries. Full of monasteries, shrines and colonial-era buildings, Salay is an interesting stop on your Myanmar journey. While here, you will visit Yoke Sone Kyaung , the region’s oldest surviving wooden monastery resplendent with spectacular wood carvings and ancient religious artefacts. Salay is also home to Shinbin Maha Laba Man Paya, the largest lacquer Buddha image in Myanmar, believed to date from the 13th century. BLD Day 10. Tantkyi Hill, Bagan. Today, climb Tantkyi Hill to visit Tantkyitaung Pagoda, encircled by 32 elephant statues and believed to house tooth relics of Buddha. Back on board, capture your first glimpse of Bagan, an awe-inspiring archaeological site. On disembarking, travel to the revered masterpiece, the Ananda Temple, built in 1105 and known by many today as ‘the Westminster Abbey of Myanmar’. This magnificent building houses four standing Buddhas facing North, South, East, and West. After time to explore here, head for the township of Nyaung-U, home to the sparkling golden Shwezigon Pagoda which consists of a gold leaf gilded stupa surrounded by smaller temples and shrines. This resplendent pagoda was completed in 1102 AD and is believed to enshrine a bone and tooth of Gautama Buddha. BLD Day 11. Bagan. Today begins with an exciting visit to the bustling Nyaung-U market. Mingle with the locals and browse the wares that are 48

sold at this trade hub including fruit, vegetables, crafts and cultural items. After your time absorbing the local culture, visit a range of distinctive structures such as Gubyaukgyi Temple. This 13th-century ‘cave temple’ has an Indian-style spire and many detailed frescoes on its interior walls, which are the oldest original paintings to be found in Bagan. After you explore the temple, head to a lacquerware workshop and a local village for further insight into the local way of life and craftsmanship. Later, you will enjoy a special sunset viewing in Bagan at Pyathat Gyi or Dhamayazaka pagodas, both of which are equally fascinating in their structure and decorative aspects. Enhance Your Journey: at sunrise or sunset, perhaps board a hot air balloon and float over the pagodas of Bagan (see pages 77). BLD Day 12. Bagan, Yandabo. You’ll continue on your journey today, departing Bagan for Yandabo, the location of the Treaty of the First Anglo-Burmese War signed during the mid-1920s. It is also famous for its terracotta pots which are made from the riverbank clay. During your time here, you’ll have a chance to see some of this local craftsmanship,. BLD Day 13. Inwa. Arrive today in Inwa, an ancient imperial capital which has been rebuilt many times over the years. Like a Local – enjoy a tour by horse-drawn cart, a true highlight of your journey. Along the way you will take in Maha Aung Mye Bon Zan Monastery and the teak-wood Bagaya Monastery which was built in 1593 and boasts a seven-tiered

In Sagaing, visit a silversmith’s workshop then explore Soon U Ponya Shin and Kaunghmudaw pagodas. Later, cruise to Mingun and visit the 18th-century Mingun Pahtodawgyi. Head to the famous Chongqing Zoo, where more than 200 varieties of wild and rare animals are on display, including the famous Giant Pandas, a critically endangered species. This beautiful creature is fast replacing the dragon as China’s emblem and has been kept in zoos since the early Han Dynasty – over two thousand years ago. Later, visit a local restaurant for an authentic hotpot lunch before transferring to the airport for your flight to Xi’an. Day 6. Xiling Gorge, Three Gorges Dam. Cruise along the Yangtze River through China’s most picturesque area, the spectacular Three Gorges region. Pass through the longest of the Three Gorges, Xiling Gorge, cruising through Yellow Ox Gorge and under Huangling Temple, built around 770 BC – 476 BC and set amid groves of orange and pomelo trees. Later this afternoon, arrive at the Three Gorges Dam and take a tour of the world’s largest engineering project. After the Captain’s Welcome Reception this evening, enjoy a special Welcome Dinner on board with your fellow guests. BLD

Day 7. Shennong Stream, Wu Gorge, Qutang Gorge. Disembark your ship at Badong and transfer by ferry to a traditional Chinese sampan (longboat). After lunch back on board, continue to the tranquil and spectacular Wu Gorge. Later, your ship will pass between the majestic Chijia Mountain and Baiyan Mountain to enter the Qutang Gorge, the shortest, narrowest and most dramatic of the Three Gorges. As you cruise past the south bank, look out for ancient inscriptions that are engraved into the white chalk cliff faces. Day 10. Xi’an, Terracotta Army, Freedom of Choice. Today you will discover the attractions of Xi’an. Visit the ancient city wall, one of the largest military defensive systems in the world, constructed in the 14th century during the early Ming Dynasty. Afterwards, travel out of the city to a clay factory where impressive terracotta soldiers are still made today. Spend the afternoon at the Museum of Qin Terracotta Warriors and Horses and the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum. Here lie the three excavation pits where the collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the warriors of Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor of China, were first unearthed by farmers in 1974. You will enjoy the opportunity to view some of the bestpreserved sculptures from a lower viewing platform, off-limits to the general public. Enjoy time to visit the three excavation pits where over 8,000 terracotta soldiers, horses, chariots and weapons are arranged in vast columns. See a number of the city’s 19th-century heritage buildings, the bustling Dalhousie Square, and St John’s Church. Then, head to the Victoria Memorial, established to serve as a tribute to the success of the British Empire in India. Here, explore the largest exhibition dedicated to British colonial history in India at the recently renovated Victoria Memorial Museum. Later, after lunch on board, your ship will begin its journey upstream along the Lower Ganges. Cruise past a number of European colonial settlements, including Dutch, French and Danish colonies, and disembark in Bandel. Day 7. Jaipur. This morning, head by Jeep to the Amber Fort, a towering fortress that overlooks Jaipur. Built from pale yellow and pink sandstone, as well as white marble, the fort is more like a palace and is divided into four main sections, each with its own courtyard. After time to explore, enjoy the remainder of the afternoon at leisure. This evening, delight in an elephant safari in Dera Amer, nestled at the foothills of the Aravali Range behind Jaipur’s Amber Fort. Following the safari, indulge in a tasty buffet dinner. BLD

Day 11. Kalna. Disembark the RV Ganges Voyager in the town of Kalna, known as the City of Temples. On a guided cycle-rickshaw tour, you’ll visit some of Bengal’s most distinct terracotta temples, including the Rajbari royal palace complex – boasting splendid gardens and a vista of round-domed temples. You’ll also see the eye-catching Shiva temples, with two perfect circles, one that has 74 temples made entirely out of white marble and black stone, the other with 34 temples made of white marble alone. You’ll also enjoy the opportunity to peruse the beautiful cooking pots, platters, oil lamps and other items that have been expertly crafted from recycled copper and brass. Afterwards, continue cruising upstream, later passing by the site of The Battle of Plassey. Learn how the British East India Company recorded a decisive victory over the Nawab of Bengal here in 1757, helping establish the company rule in Bengal and much of India. BLD

Day 14. Mayapur. Having turned around to cruise south back down the Lower Ganges, enjoy a restful morning observing local life along the riverside. Soon, you’ll disembark and visit the village of Mayapur. The birthplace of the 15th-century Hindu saint Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who is worshipped by followers as the full incarnation of Lord Krishna, Mayapur is the home of the Krishna Consciousness Movement (ISKON). On a tour, you’ll learn about the Hari Krishna community and culture, and view the construction of the nearly completed Temple of the Vedic Planetarium, just slightly smaller in size than the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt.
