2018 THE
EUROPE & ASIA COLLECTION
The best of 2018’s River Cruise holidays with all your favourite cruise lines.
Who would have believed just how popular river cruising would become as a mainstream holiday choice? It is hard to believe that over 10 years ago I invested in my passion for exploring Europe by boat and started the company RiverCruising.co.uk, when there were just a small number of vessels predominantly sailing the Rhine & Danube. Oh, how times have changed! River cruising is no longer considered the poor relation to ocean, although this will come as no surprise to those who have already taken a river cruise. But it’s not about the river, is it? Sure, each river is different, but it’s where they take you and how you travel that is the real attraction. And here lies the appeal. There’s now a plethora of river cruise lines sailing many more rivers across Europe and further afield. In fact one cruise line alone has a fleet of over 60 boats with more being launched this year! And, just as ocean offers many choices to accommodate every taste and budget, river has just the same on a smaller scale. You can choose from an all-suite butler experience to cost-conscious lower deck cabins depending on your preference, but one thing remains common throughout – the destinations you visit! River cruising has expanded to bucket-list destinations and the massive advantage here is that you get to see incredible sights in the comfort of 5 star service, without having to worry about hotel standards, or transport infrastructure as you drift along the Mekong, the Yangtze, the Ganges or the Zambezi. And let’s not forget the beautifully crafted dining options available onboard.

Why people book with us... and keep coming back!
Which Cruise Line Is For You?
This year we earned the Feefo Gold Trusted Service Award, an independent seal of excellence that recognises businesses for delivering exceptional experiences as rated by real customers.
Choice is a great thing... after all we’re all very different and look at a wide variety of aspects that contribute to our ideal holiday. Each river cruise line offers a number of inclusions; from drinks to shore excursions, and travel from the UK to being picked up from your front door step. Knowing what these are can greatly affect your decision, so we’ve tried to simplify it a little... Within this booklet you’ll find out a little more about each cruise line, along with what’s “included as standard”, using our icons explained below.
The Trusted Service label is awarded only to businesses that use Feefo to collect genuine ratings and reviews. A badge of honour, this accreditation remains unique, as all the awards are based purely on interactions with verified customers. Exceptional customer service Personal service with a genuine desire to meet your requests. Excellent service I have been speaking to Vicki, a lovely and very helpful lady. She has always been able to answer all my questions, and if not available I have left a message and she has always called me back. Nothing has been too much trouble for her and I am extremely impressed so therefore she got my business.
UK chauffeur service from your front door to the train station/airport.*
Super efficient service. Very helpful I experienced problems booking our Rhine River Cruise trip from Switzerland to Germany via two other websites. I just couldn’t proceed with either and nearly gave up! Instead, I called the number for RiverCruising.co.uk and was put through to Diane. Diane was super-efficient and very helpful – clarifying and checking my queries and getting back to me. This was an unexpected personalised service which is rare to come across these days. It definitely put my mind at rest regarding our booking.
Flights or train service from the UK River cruise in (at least) a riverview stateroom Shore excursions†
Absolutely great, no problems Excellent service, everything was explained clearly. Booking was exactly what we wanted and look forward to another enjoyable holiday.
Full board dining
Very helpful in all aspects of the booking. I was very impressed with the help I received and the booking went smoothly. Any discounts that I could have were applied, and a choice of cabin was offered. All in all - very well done.
24-hour tea and coffee Selected alcoholic drinks at lunch & dinner
Friendly and managed to get a single room with no supplement. Yes I would use again and recommend. Easy to view website showing a good number of different river cruise companies An excellent service, both informative and efficient. Agents were friendly and clearly totally in command of details affecting our booking. We would have no hesitation in recommending them to friends. Best company for a last minute cruise Arranged a river cruise with less than a week to departure. Lyndsay was extremely helpful and even spoke to me when she was at home. The flights where arranged at a convenient time from our local airport. Would have no hesitation in recommending this company.

Crack The Dress Code What is the dress code on a river cruise?
This is probably the single most popular question that we are asked whenever we talk to anyone about a river cruise holiday. Of course, everyone has their own ideas about what is acceptable and at certain times of the day, but the simple answer is, on a river cruise almost anything is acceptable.
Leave your suit and tie at home...
Take Scenic for example, a luxury river cruise company with a huge emphasis on its inclusivity as a unique selling point. Just because Scenic is top end as far as price is concerned (and very much justified may we add), it doesn’t mean that you go to dinner in a suit and tie every evening. In fact you need not wear a tie any evening – open neck shirt and trousers for men is absolutely fine and even smart jeans with shoes is totally acceptable. For the ladies, again there is absolutely no need to pack your suitcase with long dresses and high heels. A river cruise holiday is a floating city break holiday taken by people who want to see destinations that are close to the ship, experience fine dining and great company with like-minded people. In fact, in our experience, many of our clients have actually felt slightly over dressed on their first river cruise holiday! On their return, they’ve offered us feedback and advice such as – “pack clothes that tend not to crease” or “use the laundry facilities maybe once a week and wear the same shirt or blouse again”.
Smart & comfortable...
On a river cruise people dress smart yet comfortable and this is the real key to getting it right. Because it is quite an active holiday, and you may find yourself hopping back on your ship for a short cruise down the river before jumping off again an hour or two later to see a new town or city – comfortable clothing is a must. Also, you may well find yourself in town late evening, so dinner could be before you venture out for maybe a show or private concert or you may return to the ship just prior to dinner without the need or time to change. Any of these events is possible on a river cruise which is why it is such a popular holiday for those who appreciate smart, who appreciate flexibility and who do not frown when someone enters a dining room without wearing a tie or indeed a cocktail dress. 4
0800 810 8262
Consider the weather...
There is one thing however to note: Seasons play a big part in what you would pack and indeed wear onboard a river cruise ship. In the summer you may occasionally wear smart shorts if you were returning from an excursion or the weather is particularly warm but in the winter this is simply not going to happen, especially in Europe.
Top tips... Check your itinerary Will there be a lot of walking involved? If so pack some sensible walking shoes. Is there a Captains Dinner during your cruise? Pack accordingly (There are no formal nights onboard a river cruise, however a Captains Dinner would require a slightly ‘dressier’ outfit). Also remember that you may be visiting religious sites where knees and shoulders must be covered. Check the weather On a European river cruise during the summer months you would expect some hot & sunny days, however the weather can be unpredictable and it might be sensible to pack something for a chilly evening or a rainy day. Check what’s onboard What amenities are there onboard your ship? Some river ships have a swimming pool, most have a hot tub and even a gym. You wouldn’t want to get onboard and realise you forgot your swimwear or trainers... The essentials packing list... Clothing • Casual & comfortable daywear • Smart casual evening wear • Lightweight jacket (possibly a warm coat depending on where you are, and at what time of year)
As always, our friends from North and South America tend to dress down and are least likely to be seen (if ever) in a suit and tie or indeed a long cocktail dress, but you do have to remember that they are normally on a longer tour around Europe and packing dress clothes is neither practical or expected. River cruising is popular worldwide and everyone’s culture and dress code expectations are different, this doesn’t mean people have different standards.
In a nutshell.
There’s no need to pack the glitter – just be yourself and you will have the most amazing holiday afloat.
RiverCruising.co.uk
Shoes • Comfortable walking shoes • Smart evening shoes Accessories • Small day bag/purse • Umbrella • Sunglasses, sun hat & swimwear • Toiletries • Any essential medication
Electricals • Camera - and make sure there is plenty of space on the memory card. River Cruises are known for the magical scenery! • Hair dryer - many ships provide these but do double check. • Mobile phone/tablet/camera chargers • Travel adapters Travel Documents • Flight, hotel, cruise and travel insurance information (where applicable) • Don’t forget your passport!
Our final tip… Remember how long you are going for! Pack co-ordinating outfits with the intention to wear a pair of trousers more than once. And try not to pack too many pairs of shoes!

EXPLORING THE VINEYARDS OF BORDEAUX
Bordeaux and the Dordogne are bequeathed with the most beautiful of landscapes, hills wrapped with vineyards and topped with the prettiest of châteaux, while the wine is of course amongst the world’s best. At the centre of it lies the city of Bordeaux, filled with gorgeous limestone townhouses, gothic churches and the fairytale towers that mark the entrances to the old walls of the UNESCO listed old town. But the real treasures of the region are to be found in the châteaux and vineyards that adorn the countryside.
6
Wine lovers, casual connoisseurs, oenophiles and those that want to be all agree that from Medoc and the Cotes de Bourg, to Saint Emillion, Libourne and Graves, Bordeaux has many of the world’s best wines. And as France’s largest wine region, it has some of its most eclectic varieties. Saint Emillion is perhaps one of the region’s best known, with some 800 wine producers lodged around an idyllic medieval town filled with narrow streets and vibrant squares that are lined with wine shops and busy cafes. Saint Emillion wines are best known for their rich blends of Merlot, Cabernet France and Cabernet Sauvignon, with standout vineyards such as Cheval Blanc and Troplong Mondot. Chateau Clos Fourtet is a good choice for a tasting - it’s a pretty château that’s veiled in vines, with roses planted at the end of each vine row. The Château Ambe Tour Pourret on the other hand is recognisable for its
iconic 19th century tower, and offers a nice selection of wine and cheese tastings, with decent bottles starting around the £20 mark. Just north west of Saint Emillion is Pomerol - one of the smallest of Bordeaux’s major appellations. Stop off at the Château de Sales for a wine tasting in a 500 year old château that’s stayed with the same family since its inception, and later head north to the tiny town of Lalande de Pomerol for a free tasting of the Château des Annereaux’s
0800 810 8262
organic wines and a tour of the sleepy town whose centre piece is the iconic Saint-Jean Church, which was built by the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem.
Châteaux, Rivers & Wine ROUNDTRIP BORDEAUX
To the west of Bordeaux, on the left bank of the Gironde, is the Medoc region, known for its Cabernet Sauvignon blends. The best way to explore the vineyards here is to drive along the Castle Route - a kind of Route 66
for wine and castle lovers. The route takes you from Bordeaux north through famed wine making villages such as Medoc, SaintEstephe, Pauillac and Haut-Medoc, but it’s also adorned with many of the region’s most beautiful castles. The stunning Beychevell Castle stands out for both its 18th century architecture and its exceptional wines, while the Château Phelan Segur is enveloped by 66 hectares of vineyards and known for its Irish roots. Those searching for something on the sweeter end of the scale will enjoy the desert wines at Château Guiraud in Sauterne, a part of the Graves region, whose success
RiverCruising.co.uk
is said to be owed to the quartz deposits that are found in the soils of some of the region’s top estates. In fact, Graves was the original success story of Bordeaux wines, exporting to England as early as the 12th century and named after the gravel in which the vineyards are grown. The Domaine de Chevalier is a good option for a visit. The modernised château is surrounded by pine forests and offers tastings of both its red and white variants direct from the barrel. For an urban wine tasting, try the pretty Château Pape which is just 15 minutes from Bordeaux and has 13th century vineyards that were planted by Pope Clement V. The château also doubles as a hotel and has daily wine tastings that cover everything from historic tastings to technical tastings for the connoisseurs - as well as finely tuned food pairings and winemaking workshops.

Flavours of... The Rhône
We explore Paris by eye. We navigate the city’s streets by following the sparkling lights of the Eiffel Tower and the gothic spire of Notre-Dame, we strut along the Champs Elysées and try our best to avoid queues at the Louvre, but in Lyon, the gastronomic capital of the world, one must follow their nose and the kaleidoscope of flavours that tingle at the tip of the tongue. To explore France through its cuisine is to explore the real France. Its stomach, if you will…. There are more than 2,000 restaurants in Lyon, many of which are the antique, charming Bouchons (small dimly lit bistros that are filled with wooden furniture, wooden beams and legions of wine) that the city is famous for. You’ll find most of these in Vieux Lyon, the hilltop old town that’s criss crossed by a warren of cobbled streets and antique architectures, and served by a 150-year old funicular. The city is of course filled with a veritable galaxy of Michelin-starred restaurants, some studded along the twin rivers Saöne and Rhône and others hidden throughout almost every central arrondissement, from the vibrant 1st and 2nd to the artsy 6th. Two-starred La Mère Brazier in the 1st arrondissement is of particular note, both for the quality of its creative cuisine and its culinary history that dates back to the 1920’s (original head chef Eugénie Brazier was the 2nd woman to ever be awarded 3 Michelin stars). 8
0800 810 8262
Gourmands on their first cruise along the Rhône will undoubtedly want to delve deep into the Bouchons in Vieux Lyon for cuts of Rosette de Lyon followed by a thick Andouillette sausage, which are traditionally made with pork or veal, tripe, intestines and a variety of spices which differ from chef to chef. So loved are Andouillettes in fact, that a group of food writers created an Andouillette club (Association Amicale des Amateurs d’Andouillette Authentique) whose sole purpose was to rate local restauranteurs on the quality of their sausage!
that’s seasoned with chopped herbs, shallots and vinegar.
Lunch times in Lyon are special. They are vibrant and busy, with hundreds of options spread across super cheap eats in Vieux Lyon to the exquisite modern menus found in the kitchens of the 7th arrondissement, such as the sought after lunches served to the 8 tables at Le Kitchen Café.

However, if Andouillette isn’t your thing, then try the local quenelles de crochet, which is made with pike, and served with a butter or cream sauce. Other favourites include Lyonnaise potatoes - potatoes sautéed in butter with onions and parsley, Tablier de sapeur - a breadcrumbed tripe steak marinated in white wine, lemon and mustard, that’s fried and then finished in the oven, and Cervelle de cant - a cheese dip
RiverCruising.co.uk
South of Lyon you’ll be enamoured of the immaculately preserved medieval Avignon a city adorned with churches and convents and dotted with a handful of Michelinstarred restaurants, though the star of the culinary scene here is the homely Pot-au-feu, the beef stew that Raymond Blanc referred to as “the quintessence of French family cuisine”. While to the north, deep in France’s heartland, oenophiles will journey over undulating hills, through the mustard fields of Dijon and to the world-renowned chateaus of Burgundy to sip on some of France’s finest Pinot Noirs and the crispest of chardonnays.
