Love is in the air… or is it? We’re back to the time of year where you may have plans with a significant other, or you may just want to sit at home crying in your bed.

Sinaloa Cartel still a powerful threat

Due to the recent capture of former Cartel leader El Chapo’s son Ovidio Guzmán, there has been a series of attacks from the Sinaloa Cartel. There have been endless attacks on the northern city of Culiacán. These attacks have consisted of the Cartel gunmen exchanging fire with security forces, blocking roads with burning vehicles and shooting at army helicopters and police.

The Sinaloa Cartel began this violence on Jan. 6, 2023, after El Chapo son’s capture. According to The New York Times, 10 soldiers and 19 Cartel members have died, while 35 soldiers were wounded and 21 suspected Cartel members were arrested.

Guzmán is being held at, Altiplano maximum security prison in Mexico City. Coincidently this is where his father El Chapo escaped from.

The Cartel has attacked with weapons such

as 50-caliber machine guns and they have set up roadblocks with flaming vehicles. These attacks are attempts at freeing Guzmán, but they have been very destructive and violent as 3,500 soldiers were put into action. The Mexican government continues to deal with this situation and the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, says efforts from past presidents have only ended in blood.

Therefore, Obrador hopes to use the strategy “hugs not bullets.” He wants to put an end to this violence and limit the bloodshed.

There are many people being affected by this, including some students at our school. Students who were traveling to Mexico during Christmas break as border restrictions have toughened and people are having a nightmare trying to come back were not allowed to reenter the US. to the dangers created by the Cartel.

The United States Treasory Department put sanctions on an international operator, José Angel Rivera Zazueta, who imports chemicals from China into Mexico and uses them to synthesize drugs for the Sinaloa Cartel. Over 70,000 Americans have died from overdose due to opoids, mainly fentanyl, in 2020.

Although all of this conflict is happening south of the Mexican border, many Americans are affected by this problem.

Guzmán has spoke following these attacks and apologized to the locals for the destruction that has ensued.

These attacks have been going on for over a month. The Mexican government continues to monitor this situation, as the end goal is to end these attacks with little bloodshed.

Ovidio Guzmán is El Chapo’s 32 year old son. Guzmán was recently captured by the Mexican Government, as he is a high member of the Cartel and a drug lord.

El Mayo is the current leader and co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel. He is currently wanted and a reward is set at $15 million.

Students work to ‘drop the ball’

Dana Jamierson, African American Network Liaison, Black Student Union Adviser

Black History Month originated as Negro History Week in 1926 at Kent State University. It was founded by Carter G. Woodson and is celebrated in February to honor Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass’ birthdays. The first celebration of Black History Month took place in 1970 and was finally adopted as a federal holiday in 1976. Black History Month was established to recognize and appreciate black Americans and their contribution to U.S. history as well as acknowledge the struggles, successes, and fights for equality throughout history.

Each year since Black History Month has been declared a federal holiday, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (or ASALH) assigns a theme which is endorsed by the U.S. government. According to the ASALH, this year’s theme is “Black Resistance” to “recognize the resistance of brutality, oppression, and injustice by Black communities.”

Black Student Union (BSU) adviser and African American Network Liaison Dana Jamierson has framed that theme by asking the question, “Are you resisting your own blackness?”

“I feel like we’re holding each other back from our own greatness,” Alisha Johnson said. When addressing oppression, black Americans are starting to recognize their own contributions to that oppression.

“We’re debbie downers in our own community,” Kvionna Hightower said, “We don’t want to see each other strive.”

Jamierson founded the LHS Black Student Union to advocate for black students and shed light to the fact that blackness and black history doesn’t start and stop according to a calander; it’s all year ‘round, twenty-four seven. Jamierson has worked with the students involved in the BSU and created her own theme within the organization.

“I ask my kids, ‘Have you dropped the ball?’ We all have baggage or that metaphorical ball we carry around with our history,” Jamierson said. “Now we can either pass that along and say we aren’t gonna do anything about it, that we don’t care, or we can use the tools we have and continue what our ancestors started. We have to be the ones to continue the message so progress can continue to be made everyday. “

“In order to fight the resistence against ourselves we have to fight the resistance within ourselves,” Jamierson said.

The BSU has worked to incorporate the Burmese Club, the Latinx Club and white allies for this year’s Black History Month and have been planning different events in hopes to further encourage the black community to take ownership of their own progress and use the supportive resources available.

The Fault In Our Stars is a more modern movie and is the 2nd favorite of the editor choice. Who says reading can’t be romantic? This story follows two terminally ill teens this leads to a tragic story. However, the relashonship the two form while accomplishing their last wish leads to a tug on the heartstrings in this tragic but beautiful story.

Seeing herself as a matchmaker, Cher first coaxes two teachers into dating each other. This leads her to attempt to give hopelessly ditzy new student Tai (Brittany Murphy) a makeover. When Tai becomes more popular than she is, Cher realizes that her disapproving ex-stepbrother (Paul Rudd) was right about how misguided she was. This changes her feelings for him and she falls for him.

Pretty In Pink is a classic and the editors 3rd choice. Choosing two guys can be hard, it can be harder when both of them like the same person. That’s why this is my third favorite movie.

La La Land La La Land

Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and Mia (Emma Stone) are attracted by one another by their common desire to do what they love. But as success mounts they are faced with decisions that begin to fray the fragile fabric of their love affair, and the dreams they worked so hard to maintain in each other threaten to be apart from each other.

Clueless is a more comedy and the editors 4th favorite movie, despite all the comedy the romance is a bit lackluster.

La La Land is the editors 5th favorite Rom-Com movie, recemmend it for all who love musicals and who love two people who fight to stay together.

Bros is the editors 6th favorite Rom-Com movie, despide it’s atimes crude nature it can be a very comedic watch.

Date Ideas to Fall in Love With

Spartans give their insight and recommendations on first date ideas and the best dates to go on as a whole for this Valentine’s Day and all year around.

First Dates

Several students agreed on a museum/amusement park or the pumpkin patch. The amusement park or museum would be the best out of the two, of course, since the pumpkin patch is only a fall activity.

“It would give both people an opportunity for great conversations to come along while getting to know one another while having something to look at,” senior Lydia Chin said. “And it’s just a cute date idea overall.”

This will create a bonding experience for the both of you and your significant other and will surely be something the both of you can remember from the sight seeing to the great conversations.

A classic date idea such as going to the movies and dinner can be a simple, no-pressure evening, depending on how well you know the person to avoid the awkwardness that could come with the date all together.

“I feel like seeing the movie first would be a great idea, so that way the both of you could have something to talk about during dinner so it’ll be easier for conversations to flow,” said junior Lucas Fernandez.

Senior Hannah Kalhorn agrees with Fernandez as her first hand experience with dinner and a movie went smoothly and she rated it a great experience.

“It was the best first date, I give it a 10/10 still,” Kalhorn said.

A little twist to the traditional movie and dinner is to grab some food to go and head to the drive-in movie when it is open. If a movie isn’t of interest, a picnic could also work.

“I think a picnic as a first date would be a great opportunity to get to know the other person,” senior Magdalen Kyi said. “It’s like dinner but with a little bit of more hands-on effort. I think a picnic at Leila Arboretum would be the best here in Battle Creek if you’re looking for something super nice and peaceful.”

Leila Arboretum is not only a peaceful place but would also give a couple some sight seeing time together; it definitely shows effort and would make a good first impression.

“I think it would be also essential for someone to make the food because it shows how much you care and are willing to make an extra effort for the person you’re going on a date with,” senior Caleb Bost said.

Leila Arboretum provides a unique place to also star gaze if you’re willing to hang around until evening.

“I think the start of a good date would be walking up to her house with flowers and meeting her parents, taking her out to a nice dinner and proceeding to pay then later at night go stargazing,” senior Caleb Howell said.

SPARTAN SERVICE

Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community. Many struggle to find the time and effort to participate in the act. However, they may need to reconsider and look into all the great opportunities and qualities that go along with volunteering. Volunteering is important because it can boost self-confidence and esteem. Naturally, when volunteering it gives off a sense of accomplishment. Beyond just helping the people volunteering, it helps the community. It can help eliminate poverty, improve basic health and education, conquer environmental struggles, and help those less fortunate. Here at Lakeview High School, we have tons of students passionate about volunteering and plenty of opportunities to get involved!

National Honor Society is a great organization in our school that pushes for volunteering. National Honor Society, often shortened to NHS, is an organization for high schoolers that promotes leadership, service, character, and scholarship.

To become a member of the National Honor Society, it is mandatory to have over a 3.5 GPA. Once one becomes eligible, they will be looked at based on the four pillars. If admitted into the club, it is required to have 15

service hours and regular meeting attendance to remain a member. It is truly an honor to be a part of this club and it can provide great opportunities and experiences.

Regan Damore who is a senior at Lakeview High School has been a member of National Honor Society for 2 years and this year has been voted for by her fellow members to be the secretary.

Damore has always enjoyed volunteering and has been involved in volunteering programs since seventh grade.

“Volunteering makes me feel fulfilled and happy. I know I am doing something good and helpful that will bring a smile to someone’s face,” senior Damore said.

Damore recognizes how volunteering can affect others and knows she is making a difference with her actions. She uses her knowledge about the effects of volunteering to spread awareness and inspire others to volunteer from her position in NHS.

“Volunteering is important because it not only helps our community, but it also teaches you that small acts of kindness can really go a long way and there is always time to set aside to help others,” Damore said.

Key Club is another amazing club at Lakeview that gives students a way to get volunteering in our community. Key club is an international network of high school students devoted to giving back to their community through volunteer work. Lakeview’s chapter has volunteered at places such as the Charitable Union and Lakeview Assisted Living. As well as done volunteer projects such as bell ringing. Addison Little was encouraged to join Key Club by her friend who was in the club. Little loves giving back to the community and is inspired by the feeling it fills her with. With her joy for volunteering and her friend’s en-

It was not the first time Key Club has hosted an event at Lakeview Assisted Living. This past month, Key Club held a Bingo and Trivia Ceremony at Assisted Living Home.

First, key club members set out bingo cards and lead rounds of bingo for the elderly. Every time someone would win, members handed out fun-size candy as their prize. The elderly loved bingo and really got into it.

There were regular rounds, and then at the end, there were special rounds where winners got bigger prizes. To win the special rounds, players had to fill out the whole card to win prizes such as lotion, candle, and even a bird statue.

After they played Bingo for a while, they switched to trivia. Trivia was short lived as players got tired. Key members were there from 10-12 and look forward to their next volunteering event.

“With a lot of our volunteer events, we like to include the senior living center. It is really cool to see their faces light up when we walk in there to play bingo with them or do other fun activities with them,” senior Addison Little said.

Seeing the happiness on someone’s face when helping them is very special and Key Club strives to create that happiness.

LEADING BINGO Key Club President senior Ally Hogue leads Bingo at Lakeview’s Assisted Living. Key Club members played several rounds of Bingo with the residents. “It was very nerve-racking to call Bingo because you have to be loud,” Hogue said. “Some of the residents can’t hear well and some get sad when they don’t win.”

“Dr. Lincoln is a true leader and exceptional role model. I feel as if she has embodied the most important aspects of what it means to be a spartan, showing this through her leadership, dedication, and true caring heart within the community. She is such an important part of our community, and she will be missed in her role.”

Lakeview’s librarian, Margaret Lincoln has been in the Lakeview School District for 50 years and has held the position of the National Honor Society Advisor for 47 years. Throughout her time as an advisor, she has accomplished many things and contributed to our community by helping with impactful service projects such as read to lead, tutoring, and bread delivery.

Lincoln first enrolled in the University of Michigan to receive her Bacholars of Arts in French. When she and her husband, Gary, moved to Arizona, Lincoln earned her secondary teaching certificate. The couple was then recruited to teach in New South Wales, Australia. The following year, the couple returned to Michigan where Gigi earned a master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Michigan. Then started working as Lakeview’s District Librarian. In 2004, Lincoln received her doctorate from the University of North Texas.

Lakeview’s National Honor Society would not be the same without Dr. Lincoln.

Dr. Lincoln’s passion for community service and our community has not dispersed at all during her time as advisor.

Dr. Lincoln pushes students to be the best version of themselves and supports them through it all.

“She has a very calming presence about her and she makes you feel at ease”. graduate Hadley Hawks said.

Hawks had the blessing of becoming close to Dr. Lincoln while she attended LHS. Hadley first became close with Dr. Lincoln her junior year because of NHS. In Hadley’s senior year, she started a Book Club at Lakeview and

was nervous about how it would go.

“I remember being a little overwhelmed about starting the club back up, but Mrs. Lincoln was so excited and had a bunch of ideas for us to do, which really helped”

Hadley always knew Dr. Lincoln was there for her and ready to help with no questions asked. It is clear Dr. Lincoln has a passion for helping others and is always willing to give a helping hand.

For the past 50 years, Dr. Lincoln has continually spread positivity and joy with the smile she always has on her face. And her hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed.

In 2018, Dr. Lincoln received the Rynearson National Advisor of the Year award. This award is given to an advisor who demonstrates great character, leadership, and commitment to young people and their development as student leaders.

As Dr. Lincoln reflected on her time at Lakeview, she recalled her favorite

memory as her time as the advisor of NHS. In 2012, Lakeview Graduate and Governor Rick Synder did a speech for the National Honor Society Induction that took place.

“Rick Synder became governor in 2011 and I was advisor at the time. I realized that he had graduated from Lakeview and politically took the stand to support and try to get him back into the school because he still represents Lakeview” Lincoln said.

With creative thinking Dr. Lincoln found a connection and a way to make it happen.

“Mrs. Lincoln is so thoughtful. Every time I’ve been in the newspaper she’s cut them out and laminated them and then given them to me. She just such a kind person.”

Being an advisor for nearly 50 years is not easy work, but Dr. Lincoln sees all the perks and recognizes how much it has shaped our community. She sees the commitment of members and values it tremendously.

“Dr. Bill Comai was an NHS officer in the late 70s/80s and had a sister, Stephanie Comai who was on Rick Synder’s team. When I saw the bit of connection, we contacted the Governor’s office and had them agree that Synder could give the induction speech for the group of students being inducted into NHS’’ Lincoln said. She recalls it being a very special moment as alumni and old teachers all showed up for the memorable experience she won’t ever forget. Anyone that’s been a part of the Lakeview School District within the past 50 years, chances are knows Dr. Lincoln. Starting at the middle school and ending up at the high school, she has left a lasting imprint in buildings district wide. Dr. Margaret Lincoln will always have a special place in anyone’s heart that comes into contact with her. Her passion towards helping others is truly like no other and inspiring to all.

Dr. Lincoln is one of the nicest people I’ve worked with in high school. She’s created tons of cool learning experiences that go beyond the typically classroom setting.

Life as an Athletic Trainer

The life of an Athletic Trainer requires them to deal with health concerns

Following the medical emergency during the Buffalo Bills versus Cincinnati Bengals game, Bills safety Damar Hamlin is making a speedy recovery. While his cardiac arrest made national news, none of his recovery would even be possible if it weren’t for the work of the Athletic Trainers that were on scene.

While a lot of individuals take their trainers for granted, we are fortunate enough to have one in our building at almost all hours of the day. Katelyn Banner became our athletic trainer at the start of the 2021-2022 school year and has been an enormous asset for many athletes in our school, and even some opposing teams. But what does an Athletic Trainer actually have to do in order for athletes with health concerns to be able to perform as safely as possible?

It is important that everybody is on the same page when it comes to the health of others. In order for this to happen as smoothly as possible, it is important that you are truthful with all of your health conditions.

“If you put information about your health con-

cerns in final forms, it will flag it as I look through the forms,” Banner said.

If there is something wrong, it is always good to make sure that those involved in your athletics are aware of them in case of emergency. If for some reason you have an emergency in the middle of a game or practice, it is also important to have a game plan with somebody.

“I typically talk to the student and the parent, and we come up with a plan depending on what kind of medical attention their condition may require,” Banner said.

The steps that Athletic Trainers take to keep us protected can be a lot at times, especially if you have a more complicated condition. Even if you think it is “embarrassing,” it is always important to keep everyone around you involved in case something happens. If you feel like there’s no one to turn to about your condition, here at Lakeview you always have Katelyn Banner, who will always be able to answer all of your questions.

How can you become a trainer?

While there are different types of jobs that you can pursue in the medical field, Athletic Trainers (ATs) are starting to become more and more needed around the country. If this is something that may be of interest to you, let me tell you some steps that you can take to pursue that dream. First, upon high school graduation you are going to want to pick a college that offers the program and degree that you need to obtain. Some top rated colleges include, Western Michigan University, Alma College, Davenport University and Adrian College.

A lot of places will take you with a Bachelors degree, but most places prefer if you have a Masters degree. You can have this in either Athletic Training, or more commonly in exercise science. In these programs you can expect to take classes such as biology, anatomy, nutrition, sports medicine, and kinesiology. If you want to know what you can expect to learn in these classes, any accredited college can provide you with a class description.

After completing this degree, you are going to move on to obtaining your AT certification. You have to do this through a Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Trainer Education (CAATE) program. After completing this program, this should have taken roughly five years worth of schooling. Just when you think you are done, you have only reached just the beginning. Once completing all of your proper education, you have to take and pass the Board of Certification exam. This exam is what grant you with your training license.

That’s it, now you can get to searching for jobs. A lot of places take athletic trainers; colleges, high schools, gyms, even facilites that host sporting events.

PDA in School... When is it Appropriate?

So...here’s the sitch... I think that the majority of us can agree that PDA in some situations is totally okay. There is, however, a fine line between PDA on a date versus PDA in school. This is a line that I am seeing get crossed way too many times.

No one is in favor of seeing you devour your significant other’s lips mid-hallway. It creates an uncomfortable space in an environment that is intented for learning. I guess the biggest curiosity that haunts me is what even puts people in the right mood to act out

APPROPRIATE PDA

HAND HOLDING: Hand hold while making your way down the hallway is not a big deal. This is prob ably the most accepted form of PDA. Show your partner you care without making others uncomfy.

HUGGING: Hugging is also acceptable, but don’t stay too long and embrace each other awkwardly... you know who you are...

ARM AROUND THE SHOULDER: No issues with a nice wrap around the shoulder, but, again, to an extent. Shoulder and shoulder only, bud.

One argument in defense of this behavior is that the couples are not able to see each other outside of school. I combat this by saying I don’t believe a relationship should be at a physical level yet if they really have not had time to explore their dynamic outside of their math class. However, if one is going to practice PDA in school, it’s important to establish what’s acceptable and what’s not...

INNAPROPRIATE PDA

GROPING: Being overlytouchy with your significant other is generally not recieved well by others in a public space. If you are aware your actions are making things awkward, WHY ARE YOU STILL DOING IT?

MAKING OUT: Save this for your own time, PLEASE. We are at school. No one should be coming into school in the mood to touch tongues with someone else. We are learning, PEOPLE.

- INDECENT EXPOSURE: I shouldn’t have to elaborate on this one... keep your privates to yourself. Please and thank you.

Do You Love Me?

Oh, Valentine’s Day...a time filled with cheesy Snapchat posts, chocolate that doesn’t taste the best and flowers. For couples, it is a beautiful and romantic day; for the rest of the population, it’s a day to sit in bed wondering why they can’t get a boyfriend or girlfriend.

I think every person in a relationship either thinks one of two things about the holiday: 1. how exciting and romantic and 2. why I have to go along with this? For singles, it’s a time to reminisce about the relationship they had or wish they had. For the group that falls under the “had” category this romantic season is filled with reminders of what could’ve been. The flowers I could’ve gotten, the post that could’ve had me in it.

Breakups can be due to so many situations from growing apart, not being compatible, falling out of love, or cheating, physically or mentally.

I can say that this holiday is one of the stupidest holidays to exist.

Seeing all the “love” around here is kind of gross. I may not be attracted to the holiday’s meaning, but I also think being single can ultimately be the smart choice for Valentine’s Day season. You are exempt from all the decisions of what to get them, wondering if you are a thing or not, deciding how much money to spend... All questions singles don’t have to stress about make being single worth it.

“Americans who are planning to celebrate the holiday will spend an average range of roughly $175 to $210 this year, according to a couple of recent surveys,” Mike Winters from CNBC said.

So, breakups might be a touchy subject this holiday season but remember all you single people out there, you are saving $200 you can use on gas and Taco Bell. And I love that!
