HOW MUSIC MOVES US

7:30 PM Welcome & Introductions

Ruth Cullen

Tonight we celebrate the power of music with two extraordinary artists, singer-songwriters, multiinstrumentalists, and mainstays in the Folk and American Roots music scene. Rhiannon Giddens and Allison Russell are acclaimed voices on creativity and equity in the arts whose work explores the intersection of music, history, and storytelling. I know you will be inspired and moved by tonight’s fascinating conversation and musical performances.

The musicians and performing artists featured in our preForum MUSIC FEST represent just a taste of the diversity of musical talent and creative artistry we have right here in Greater Hartford. Special thanks to Eastern Connecticut State University and the Greater Hartford Arts Council for their generous support of the MUSIC FEST.

Nights like this are made possible by people like you –supporters of arts and culture in our community. Thank you for supporting our work by being here tonight, buying tickets, donating, sponsoring, telling a friend, and advocating for organizations like The Connecticut Forum by completing the survey linked on page 10 of this playbill.

Your support and belief in our mission have made our work possible for the past 31 years. Together, we can continue to add vitality and excitement to our community!

Sit back, relax, and enjoy The Forum!

My best to you,

Cullen

RHIANNON GIDDENS

A MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient, Rhiannon Giddens co-founded the Grammy Award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, and has been nominated for six Grammys. She was also nominated for her collaboration with Francesco Turrisi called there is no Other.

Giddens’ album, They’re Calling Me Home, was recorded with Turrisi during the recent lockdown. It speaks of the longing for the comfort of home and the metaphorical “call home” of death.

Giddens’ lifelong mission is to lift up people whose contributions to American musical history have previously been erased, and to work toward a more accurate understanding of

the country’s musical origins.

Giddens has performed for the Obamas at the White House, served as a Carnegie Hall Perspectives curator, received the Legacy of Americana Award, and is featured in Ken Burns’ Country Music series where she speaks about the African American origins of country music.

She is also a member of the band Our Native Daughters with three other black female banjo players: Leyla McCalla, Allison Russell, and Amythyst Kiah, and has been named Artistic Director of Silkroad in 2020.

As an actor, Giddens had a featured role on the television series Nashville.

Allison Russell, musician, poet, singer, songwriter, and activist – as well as the co-founder of Our Native Daughters and Birds of Chicago – is an extraordinary artist of power, empathy, and grace.

Outside Child, the Montreal native’s acclaimed debut solo LP, hailed around the world as one of 2021’s best and most essential new albums, is a heartbreaking reflection and powerful reclamation of her childhood.

Honors and awards for Russell and Outside Child include three 2022 Americana Award nominations, two International Folk Music Awards, a Juno Award for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year, three Canadian Folk Music

Awards, two UK Americana Music Awards, and three Grammy Award nominations.

Russell has been profiled in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, and on NPR and has appeared on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE!, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Ellen, CBS Saturday, and PBS’ Austin City Limits.

Russell tours regularly in the U.S. and around the world, headlining and supporting contemporaries such as Brandi Carlile, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Jason Isbell. In 2023, Russell will release her debut book, a memoir based on her life and the material that inspired Outside Child published by Flatiron Books.
