VISIONARY. CUTTING-EDGE. BOLD. IT’S THE CONNECTICUT FORUM.
2 LIFE IN 2042 FORUM
WELCOME TO THE CONNECTICUT FORUM!
LIFE IN 2042 Dear Friends,
7:30 PM
Welcome to the future! We’ve definitely been here before, tapping into the vision and brilliance of tech experts to help us visualize what’s to come. Our Big Tech Forum in 2019 featured tech experts Jaron Lanier, Nicholas Thompson, and Sherry Turkle – as well as a brief appearance on stage by a robot; and before that, scientists and visionaries Neri Oxman, Joi Ito, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Nicholas Negroponte helped us look around corners to imagine what might come next. Tonight, we are eager to peer into the future once again and explore the groundbreaking, creative, and sometimes otherworldly innovations that will likely become part of our everyday lives. Our accomplished and pioneering panelists will answer questions about how we’ll work and live, such as: How will we communicate and interact with one another? What will the workplace look like? What effects will new technology, climate change, global trends, medical advancements, and cultural changes have on our day-today lives? What ethical issues arise with new technologies? Keeping up with these life-altering trends and innovations is no easy task – we hope that tonight’s discussion helps us all understand and make sense of the fascinating advancements that are on the horizon. So sit back and open your mind to what’s to come. All my best,

HELEN PAPAGIANNIS Expert in Technology and Augmented Reality, Researcher, Designer
Helen Papagiannis has been working with augmented reality (AR) for more than 15 years as a researcher, designer, and consultant. “AR transforms the way we interact with the world at large,” says Papagiannis, a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Augmented and Virtual Reality. Papagiannis develops new insights and innovative ideas to inform decision-makers around the world about AR and shows how it focuses our engagement with real spaces, improves health and accessibility, and enhances human intelligence, creativity, and connection. Today, people living with autism can use AR to prepare for job interviews, retail stores can allow customers to virtually try their products, and “calm” technology, can lessen our cognitive overload. Papagiannis’ work explores the opportunities and ethical challenges we face as we continue to build
this future iteration of the Internet. Her website, XRGoesPop, introduces us to the discipline of XR—Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, and Virtual Beings. Recently, she was chosen as one of 200 artists to reimagine the iconic Louis Vuitton trunk, which she did through a piece of AR artwork. Papagiannis’ TEDx Talk was featured among the Top 10 Talks on Augmented Reality and Gamified Life. She is the author of Augmented Human, a guide to this fast-moving technology. She was a member of the Bruce Mau Design studio where she was project lead on Massive Change: The Future of Global Design, a touring exhibition and bestselling book examining new inventions, technologies, and events changing the world. She is the former Chief Innovation Officer at Infinity Augmented Reality and Senior Research Associate at York University’s Augmented Reality Lab.

JOHN DANKOSKY Journalist, Director of News and Audio at NPR’s Science Friday John Dankosky is Director of News and Audio for Science Friday, helping lead the staff of the weekly public radio show. He’s also been a long-time guest host on the popular program. Dankosky likes building radio collaborations. He helped bring together 18 stations across the Northeast to cover environmental issues, which eventually led to the New England News Collaborative. He has also worked with NPR on their Collaborative Coverage Project and with the national talk program America Amplified. Now, Dankosky is working to build the State of Science Reporting Network, bringing together great science reporting from across the country. For 25 years, Dankosky oversaw news programming at WNPR, where he started the daily talk show, Where We Live, and the weekly regional program, NEXT. He produced and edited awardwinning long-form documentaries on mental health
and care for the elderly, and has reported hundreds of segments for NPR, including one about virtual reality in dentistry that’s actually pretty embarrassing to listen to now. Dankosky has moderated many Connecticut Forum conversations, including Our Fragile Earth (2012), Vision & Brilliance (2012), An Honest Look at Mental Illness (2014), Debating Our Broken Political System (2014), The Science of Our Minds (2016), The Future of Higher Education (2016), The State of Journalism & the News (2018), Big Tech (2018), and Climate Crisis (2019). You can also see him doing live events for The Connecticut Mirror and The International Festival of Arts & Ideas. Dankosky and his wife have four cats, thousands of bees, and a yoga studio in the sleepy Northwest hills of Connecticut. He grew up in Pittsburgh and is as big a Mr. Rogers fan as you’ll find anywhere.
