Editor's Ramble JAMES Holder - EDITOR of the CUTTHROAT JOURNAL assion. We’re all born with it. In spades. You just have to watch little kids and the excitement they froth with when they’re doing stuff that they love. Somewhere along the line, people sometimes lose that passion and become bogged down in the everyday - working, paying the bills, family responsibilities. Just getting by or simply existing in life is a totally sucky way to live life. I reckon it is, anyways. It doesn’t mean that everyday is gonna be a thrill ride. Some days certainly do suck. But we can make the best of everyday. It’s all in the way we look at things. Why did you become a barber? Maybe you’ve lost your froth and it’s become a mundane part of your life. It doesn’t have to stay that way, you know? Do you realise how much your thinking affects your outlook? I talk to my kids about this sort of stuff all the time because I want them to suck the marrow out of life (RIP Robin Williams, sorry you lost hope brother). If you think – well life bites, it’s all downhill from here, this is just a job etc etc then guess what? Your life will most likely play out that way. But, my friends, and I’m sure most of you already know this anyways, if you’re stuck in a rut, change it! Start thinking about your customers more, be interested in them, ask them about their life. They’ll appreciate your attention and you might be surprised by how

p

rewarding that will be. Another idea, you ask? Ok. What else are you interested in outside of barbering? If you haven’t already, maybe you want to somehow incorporate that into your barbershop. Passion is infectious and following your passion is exhilarating (How good are thesauruses – just need to check if that’s a word?). I met with Tim, a fellow barber from Turnstyles barber shop in Bellingen, NSW last month (he also has a shop in Coffs Harbour). We’ve got a review of his shop in this edition, and the thing that struck me most about him was how much he loved what he was doing. It was obvious in the way he interacted with his customers. I also got to hang out with Simon, the man behind Culture Kings. Again, a man with obvious passion for what he does and for the industry. Check out their feature and keep a look out in here for some awesome work opportunities coming up from Culture Kings. New kids in awesome product town, Reuzel, are searching for brand ambassadors. The grand prize is a trip to the Scumbag Barbers of Rotterdam. You might want to get onto that. Friends, fellow barbers, let’s promise to be totally passionate about being passionate. Enjoy and until next time amigos. Don’t be a stranger. Jimbo 4

Sean Edwards - Publisher of the CUTTHROAT JOURNAL GET THOSE BLOKES TO OPEN THEIR WALLETS. IN THE LAST TWO MONTHS I’VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO SOME DIRECT RESEARCH WITH BARBERS AROUND THE COUNTRY. I have been distributing The Cutthroat Journal to barbers from Melbourne to Cairns and having plenty of chats about where the industry is heading. People are asking where they can get real barber training. Lots of barbers are saying they all want to learn how to wield the cutthroat razor and learn some of the traditional styles that are coming back with the young guys. It is very frustrating to hear there are limited places to learn the traditional methodology of barbering. It’s so important not to let this tradition fade away. The good news is we will be looking at training and getting motivational barbers nationally and from overseas, who are willing to teach new comers. Something else that has been missed is the opportunity of selling hair and body products for men. Female salons do this so well and it’s a big part of their revenue with product sales. I’ve noticed in traditional barbershops I have visited that they may not be taking advantage of their usable floor space to sell some product and make some extra cash. So lets look at how we can change this and add another 25% revenue into the business. Sweeping statements time. Research shows that men shop quickly. They get in, get what they need and get out! Nine times out of ten, most blokes know what they want before they go into a store. They’re less likely to read too much about stuff in a sales pitch and they usually shop for the immediate needs and not for future use. Men are less inclined to care about quality unless they’re buying tools. Men might not care about colour or whether an item is on sale. They may not think much about the price because they are more time sensitive to the shopping experience and how long the task will take. Most of the traditional barbers I have met are great talkers and they o en win the client over very quickly. The barbers I know could convince 6

the dude in the seat to do almost anything. I am a perfect example - Jimbo the Barber convinced me to help him start a barbers magazine. This skill could be honed into selling products in the store. Barbers, let’s try and increase revenue by selling more stuff to blokes! • Buy popular products that the market wants which also have a good margin of 30% or better, nothing worse than having stock sitting around nobody wants. • Create some retail space to sell those skate boards or skulls or whatever it is. Put in a decent retail cabinet and light up that area or better still, put it in a place where people walk past. • Recommend to your clients what they need whilst still in the chair (preferably while you’ve got the razor out). • Guys don’t get told o en they look good by other guys. Barbers can do this well, as they are the creators of style at that moment of time. Also great time to recommend a product to keep them looking good. • Popular products that are selling well in barbershops – Pomade, shampoo and conditioners, beard oil, moustache wax, home clippers, combs, cologne, T shirts, caps, books, protein powder, just about anything that a man wants. I have been a business consultant for over ten years and have a pretty good handle on the growth industries, and the barbershop is one of them. The secret to the continued growth of the barbershop business is going to be getting business smarter, and educating the marketplace. Stay tuned for our travels in America to the World Beard and Moustache Championships. I’ll be cheering on The Cutthroat Journal Editor, Jimbo, as he competes dressed as an Aussie Bushranger. Happy Clipping. Sean

O ri gi na l Ba da Bi ng Po ma de ‘As a barber, Bada Bing pomade is one of the smoothest pomades available. So easy to use and distribute through the hair to style on mid to short lengths. From a consumer perspective, it is extremely easy to use in the hair for styling. It won’t clump in the hair, making it a hell of a lot easier to do a complicated style on yourself. And the fragrance is incredibly addictive!’ Mick Le Mura, Jimmyy Rods

Baxxter of Ca li forni a Ba - H a rd w ater po ma de

Baxt er of C alifornia - Har d C r eam Pom ade ‘Manhor likes the Hard Cream Pomade as it’s suitable for wet and dry application. Its flexibly used by our inhouse master stylists for short and long hair particularly, giving you a tailored finish with shine. A favourite for a vintage hard part and all aspects of fades.’ Manhor Men’s Grooming Lounge ‘Baxter of California’s Hard Cream Pomade is a great product, especially for clients with shortermedium length hair. It has a great texture to it, holds great, re-combs without water as well as with water, and leaves the hair so a er its use. It also has a great scent, and like any other Baxter of California pomade, it really lasts a long time and it only takes a small dab to create a lot of hold. ‘ Alen Celahmetovic (owner/barber at Barber Bros and Co) ‘A personal favourite in the Baxter range. Really good for finishing longer hair styles that still require some taming. Whether it’s a bit of frizz or to hold the direction on a nice blow dry finish. Used in small or large amounts, the Hard Cream gets a lot done! For fine hair a er it’s been dried a small layer over the top keeps the hair tame. Or work it through evenly to bring out texture in a cut. Also works well in towel dryed curly hair to group the curls together and avoid frizz as it dries.’ Sean Palmer; Uncle Joe’s, King St.

B axter of Ca li forni a - Cl ay Po ma de ‘The Clay Pomade walks out in its droves for guys with short and long hair. Apply to long hair, hit with a blow dryer to heat up product so its more pliable for a more even and consistent distribution. Then work it through with a denman to deliver a more classic, groomed look. Ideal for the corporate and classic look. For short hair, rub it through your hands vigorously to heat and dissolve product for even coverage, avoiding clumps and build up. Great matte effect, giving visible texture and effect. Ideal for short styles with a messy street look.’ Manhor Men’s Grooming Lounge ‘As a barber, I am always on the hunt for pomades that actually deliver on their claims of effectiveness. I have found it with Baxter of California’s Clay Pomade, and so have my clients. It is a great mixture of actual clay and beeswax that keeps your hair where it should be, even if your hair has got a tendency to drop. Gone are my a ernoon sessions of pushing my hair back into place, and even though I am burning through the Baxter of California shampoo a little faster than normal (you might need to wash your hair twice to get out the strong matte-finish paste), it is worth it.’

Alen Celahmetovic (owner/barber at Barber Bros and Co) ‘Baxters Clay Pomade is a rare beast! A strong hold pomade with no shine makes it highly desirable to clients that want the effects of a pomade but don’t want the glossy finish. Great for achieving volume in long hair for upstyles. An easy sell to working professionals.’ Jimmy Rods

‘Hard Water Pomade; it’s got firm hold with a shine finish, ideal for the slicker styles. Applying it to wet hair then combing through will create a polis look. Using it on a blow dried quiff will polished hold the quiff and give it shine.’ Gran Royal Barbers Grand

‘I’ve been cutting hair for 11 years now, and in that time have not found another product that even comes close to the Baxter Clay Pomade. It is without a doubt the most versatile men’s styling product on the market.’

Boys Club Adelaide ‘Baxter of California is one of Grand Royal Barbers favourite brands. Clay Pomade; it’s got firm hold with a matte finish, ideal for adding fullness and hold to fine’ short, textured styles without weighing it down. Warm it up in your hands & apply to dry hair working it all through. It also has great hold power for thick, unruly hair. Warm it up in your hands apply through damp hair, comb into place and your hair won’t move all day.’ Grand Royal Barbers ‘The Clay Pomade has the strongest hold In the Baxter range. As the name suggests it has a clay like consistency, offering the wearer a slightly ‘dryer’ version of a classic pomade. It gives a minimum grease finish but allows the hair to darken slightly with a medium firm hold. It’s also great for clients with curly hair who like to animate those curls with a classic ‘pomp’ style finish. The moisture of the clay gives life back to natural waves in their hair.’ Sean Palmer; barber at Uncle Joe’s, King St.

'Barbers are the experts. so ask us, we will tell it to you straight.'

PomadeS THE PICK of the bunch

BYRD H AIR PO M ADE The traditional men’s hair care market, specifically pomades, is enjoying an unheard of resurgence. This is not just a trend - but rather a permanent market move towards premium, yet approachable product and service, driven by a man’s desire to look slick. Products that represent well-made, authentic and at times, aspirational values become a part of a man’s daily routine, fostering brand and product loyalty for years to come. This movement is supported by the return of many to the cra of traditional barbering, as independent, premium barbershops continue to take root in cities large and small around the globe.

L AYRI T E D ELUXE & Superhold PO M ADEs ‘Layrite almost needs no introduction. But for the uninitiated, it is definitely the benchmark by which all other water-based pomades are measured. It scoops smoothly out of the tub and when rubbed through the hands, spreads easily and quickly, and you can smell the great vanilla essence scent. As for hold, it has certainly got some substance to it. If you have normal thick hair, then this is going to be as much grip as you will need. When fully dry, the hardening is minimal and you should not need to touch up with a wet comb unless you encounter inappropriate weather. It also washes out easily, and I can certainly say, based on client feedback and my personal use, it is the IT pomade for first time pomade users. ‘ Denis Celahmetovic (owner/barber at Barber Bros and Co) ‘A classic pomade finish with new style technology. Gives the user a very classic, malleable finish with slick backs and pomps. Its water based formula means that it doesn’t build up through the week and is easy to wash out. Smells great and looks sharp. Can also be applied in curly, ,towel damp hair in small amounts to minimise frizz as it dries! Much like the classic Layrite, it offers the sophisticated finish of wet sleek hair styles. Yet as it dries the strong hold sets stiff in the hair. Really

good with stubborn hair types, for a finish that won’t budge. And again easy to wash out!’ Sean Palmer; barber at Uncle Joe’s, king st. ‘Layrite is the “original” water based pomade that goes “in like a wax and washes out like a gel.” It’s a very user friendly pomade for guys that want a classic look without the grease, but who don’t want that rock hard gel finish either.’ Boys Club Adelaide

The BYRD Pomade Collection is an exciting, yet simple and concise range for barbers and stylists to use effectively in barbershops and premium salons. The BYRD Hairdo Products will represent a consistent, high retail sales velocity and stable margin month in, month out for your business. #lookslick #byrdhair #stylewithclass #stylewithease #stylewithoutcare

‘Layrite is one of the truly original water based pomades. It set the standard to which all others are measured. And once a client first uses Layrite it is damn near impossible to get them onto anything else. Without a doubt it has one of the most loyal customer bases. Great hold, high shine, can’t go wrong!’ James O’Brien, Jimmy Rodds ‘What I love about Layrite - the simple packaging, clean, non-overpowering scented mens product that is perfect in my barber shop. It finishes my workmanship perfectly. It’s a no nonsense, easy product clients can use everyday that compliments today’s styles. As the logo states “feels like a wax n washes out like a gel” (perfect) ‘ Brian, Barbers at the Bay, RoseBay Sydney

LEEN

BERTUS

n the beginning: Schorem is a bit of a wordplay that gets lost in in translation. It means “scumbags”, “bad boys” in Dutch, but it is also the past tense form of “I shave him”, literally meaning “I shaved him”. The “Haarsnijder en Barbier” means Haircutter and Barber in Dutch.

I LEEN AND BERTUS STARTED LEARNING MENS HAIRCUTTING WHEN THEY WERE JUST FOURTEEN YEARS OLD. WITH THEIR LOVE OF CLASSIC BARBERING AND THE INFLUENCES OF ROCK N’ ROLL, KUSTOM CULTURE AND ITS SUBCULTURES, IT WAS INEVITABLE THAT ONE DAY LEEN AND BERTUS WOULD OPEN SCHOREM HAARSNIJDER EN BARBIER.

Schorem is an old school men-only barbershop in the heart of the working class city of Rotterdam in Holland. The shop specializes in traditional, classic and signature haircuts, as well as, hot towel straight razor shaves. Schorem is trying to preserve a vanishing cra from a lost era of time. Since it’s opening, Schorem has been frequented by greasers, rockers, bikers, psychobilly’s, inkslingers, skateboarder, kids, ruffians and other fine gentleman scumbags from every echelon of society. With more than fi y years of barbering and grooming experience these Rotterdam Barbers have now formulated pomades worthy of their exacting standards. As old school barbers they dug deep into the history of pomades to formulate what they belief are the worlds finest; Reuzel. Reuzel: Reuzel is the Dutch word for lard and is 19

a wink to a past when pomades were made from animal fats and fragranced with apples. The word pomade actually comes from the French word pomme, meaning apple. Reuzel grease in the green can is a beeswax based, medium hold pomade. It’s as sticky as honey and will pomp up or slick down every classic or signature barbershop haircut. The traditional pomme fragrance has been spiced up with a little peppermint in Reuzel traditional grease. ‘Perfect for the man who carries a comb and knows how to use it’. Reuzel pomade in the red can is a water based, high shine pomade with a subtle scent of cola. Reuzel pomade rinses out easily but holds hair like super glue and shines like a fresh coat of paint on your favourite vintage car. ‘Perfect for both the pomade aficionado and the beginner’. If you Are not doing anything on the 25th October 2014, Oregon to behold the event that is, The World Beard

You may be the bearer of a breath-taking beard. The manager of a manly moustache, or maybe a not so manly one, who are we to judge? You may be just a voyeur of all things facial hair related. Whatever the reason, this is definitely a must attend event. The judge’s job is simple. As stated on their website www. worldbearchampionships.com ‘The judges will be asked to determine which contestant’s facial hair best enhances his overall appearance, style, and personality. In the freestyle categories the judges will be asked to consider originality and creativity as well.’ That my friends, could be the most awesome judging criteria ever known to man. Overall, there are 17 different categories to compete in. These include Moustaches, Partial Beards and Full Beards and each of these main categories have sub categories. It’s very specific people, take note. There are regulations in each category on length, style and whether or not you’re allowed to use product or ‘aids’ to style your hairy self. There are rules, I particularly like number 8 ‘The organizers reserve the right to modify these rules at any time. Any rule modifications will be announced publicly before the competition begins.’ And number 13 should certainly rule out any try hards ‘Artificial facial hair is not permitted.’ Last years event was held in Germany and saw hundreds of competitors from 20 countries attend. Beard Team USA scooped nine trophies, they love themselves a good beard and mo obviously. This year, representing Australia and The Cutthroat Journal, in all their bushranger glory, will be none other than our Editor Jimbo, supported by our publisher Sean. Jimbo has been busily cultivating his facial fuzz for some time now, and is hoping that the judges hearts will be swayed by the charm and ruggedness of these good old blokes from Down Under mates. Let’s send them off with our heartiest good beard vibes and we’ll give you the down low on the event in the next edition of The Cutthroat Journal.

you might just want to pop on over to Portland, and Moustache Championships (cue echo).

GROOM YOUR

BEARD

Top celebrities are now sporting beards. From Ryan Gosling and Jake Gyllenhaal to Australia's own Hugh Jackman. The length of the beard can range from a very short 5 o'clock shadow to a long, full grown beard.

T

he beard trend has been growing rapidly in Australia for at least the past 12 months. A few articles have been written about reaching ‘peak beard’ status, but with Movember just around the corner there might be more life le in the beard yet! Not to mention more hair to stick some flowers in. Men who shave their faces need to use certain products to provide the optimum shave. Men who choose to keep a beard on their face, also need to use certain products to maintain and groom it. That means washing, moisturising and styling their beards. It doesn’t matter what type of beard a man grows on their face, grooming is essential. There are only 3 steps that should be taken to maintain ones beard. WASH - No matter what, you will need to wash your beard. Imagine not having a shower for a week - what would that smell like?? If you are working in an office then you may not have to wash it every day but, say, if you are working as a mechanic, that would require a daily wash. As your face skin is under the hair you need to make sure you use a really gentle soap or beard cleanser. Head shampoos are meant to clean the scalp which tends to be oilier and hairier than the beard so

we’ve seen a lot of guys who find head shampoos a bit too harsh and drying on their skin. MOISTURISE - Once your beard is clean, you need to ensure that the skin under the beard is moisturised, otherwise you might get a case of bad beardruff (dandruff ~ beard style), which isn’t attractive to anyone. Normal moisturising creams are too thick to even reach the skin, let alone help moisturise it. A good beard oil (which also smells nice), will penetrate not only the hair but the skin as well. The oil will help minimise beard itch that many men experience and minimise beardruff. Ben, a beard enthusiast, decided to grow out his beard during the summer holidays but found it was not without its challenges. ‘You get into day 4 and 5 and the itch can make you want to shave it off.’ He found beard oil to be the solution to this problem. STYLE - The final step is styling your beard. If you are not inclined to style it that’s cool, the beard oil will tame your beard and help to make sure the hairs point the same way. However if you want something to hold the hairs in place, then you best get a beard balm or a moustache wax to do the job. Jacqueline De Campo, Milkman Australia 25

Lucky Country

Australia, a land of opportunity, a beacon of hope for weary immigrants in search of a new beginning.

ver since the Irish graced these shores, led by the likes of Ned Kelly’s father and his Irish counterparts, the path was paved for future generations of youth, building dreams soaked in the blood, sweat and tears of their fore bearers.

E

makers that stop the boat people from arriving than the boat people themselves. The policy makers that turn boats around and send old and young to camps. There they await their doom and impending return to a country where their lives are most certainly in danger.

That dream of life in the ‘Lucky Country’, a privilege to those who live here, is fast becoming a pipe dream for the less fortunate.

Maybe we should jump on the next boat and throw ourselves out? Let’s hand back Australia to the indigenous people who had their land taken from them by no choice of their own. A race that had to accept the arrival of ‘New Australians’ to their shores.

How ironic that in a country built by the hands of migrants, we equate the arrival of boat people on our shores to an Armageddon-style invasion of parasites. Don’t get me wrong, I agree with a program of immigration and border control. I agree that the government must protect it’s citizens, but it seems Australians are more in need of protection from the policy

And how bad would it really be to live in a land free from the oppressive shackles of xenophobia? To shake off the heavy burden of racism and embrace the cultural riches of other nations. Now that would be real freedom. 27

CULTURE KINGS IS A ONE STOP STYLE DESTINATION FOR THE FRESHEST CUTS AND PREMIUM STREETWEAR. ANYONE WHO’S SET FOOT IN THE CULTURE KINGS STORES IN SYDNEY, MELBOURNE, BRISBANE OR THE GOLD COAST WILL KNOW THERE’S NO EXPERIENCE LIKE IT IN THE WORLD.

An dr eA Culture Kings master barber

T

he unique concept stores are pumping with live DJs spinning, instore barbershops and one of the largest streetwear collections on the planet. The Cutthroat Journal sat down with Andrea to talk barber trends and life as one of Culture Kings’ Master Barbers. Andrea heads Culture Kings Barbershop in Sydney but his affair with classic barbering style began in Melbourne. Andrea tells, “I was down in Melbourne when the barber scene first started getting real big down there. Dudes were doing pretty cool stuff with their hair and I thought, ‘Yeah, I wanna be a part of that!’ So I started cutting and got into the classic side of barbering by doing lots of ‘50s and ‘60s inspired haircuts.” It was love at first chop. A lot of Culture Kings customers request the ever popular, standard comb over though Andrea enjoys mixing things up to include pomps, rockabilly work and psychobilly work – especially psychobilly Mohawks and quiffs in his repertoire. His all-time favourite? “I like cutting classic styles because, not only are they challenging to do, but they also grow out real nicely. They’ve got the longevity; I think that’s really important – that’s what makes a good haircut, something that looks good one month to six weeks later. Not something that expires a week a er you cut it.” It’s always best to pay your respects to classic style but barbering at Culture Kings is about constantly evolving as well. Creating new takes

on classic styles to give the customer the freshest look possible to match the brand’s trendsetting streetwear range. “I like it when someone comes in with a classic cut, but a little bit different to what you normally see on the streets,” he says. “I saw a dude with a pretty cool psycho Mohawk the other day - it was completely flat, cut up long through the front and was kind of blending into the skin at the back. Sort of like ‘60s punk kinda look.” “The most common hairstyles in Sydney are probably still the comb over,” Andrea shares, “The ones shaved all the way up to the part and then just slicked over to the other side are probably my least favourite haircut. It’s totally overdone. It doesn’t grow out nicely. Anything with super high clippering generally doesn’t last.” All barbers have their favourite product, what’s Andreas? “My favourite product at the moment is Rats Get Fat’s Original Pomade. It’s just a super smooth pomade, it goes through real easy, no tugs when you try to comb it through and it’s got amazing hold to it - it just holds all day. Easy to use.” What does he love about cutting at Culture Kings? “You get all different types of people in the chair. You get the corporates and the real business guys through to African hair.” It’s not all sleek cuts and creative challenges at Culture Kings though. “About two weeks ago a dude came in and ripped his shirt off and asked one of the barbers to shave his back. And he did it! That was the most messed up thing.”

{ INTERVIEW}

H

ow long have you been sign painting? I didn’t start out doing sign painting. When I was 15 I taught myself pinstriping and then taught myself how to do lettering when I was around 19. It’s only the last 5 years I’ve taken it seriously though, trying to hone my skills and then opening my shop

lunch time. My wife and I sometimes take our kids down to the park in the mornings and grab a coffee, then I’ll start work . I guess that’s one great thing I love about working for myself, there’s no normal day.

You have a very unique, vintage style - where does this influence and inspiration stem from? Pretty much most of it comes from my head and the other part comes from when I drive around - I’m always looking at letters, signs, shapes of signs, colours and what colours look good together. You could almost say I’m obsessed with signs haha

Do you do any other form of painting or art in your spare time or is it signage that is your passion? Nah I guess im pretty lucky I have made my passion/hobby into my full time job which supports my family. There’s not much more I would change. When I’m not painting a sign for someone I’m painting and designing signs to hang on my wall in the shop

What are some of the favourite signs you have painted? This is a hard question to answer as I love every art piece I do. I have designed and painted a sign for Uppercut Deluxe, some signs for Sterling Hairdressing Parlour and Barbershop, All the Kings Men, Porteño, Le Bon Ton, that’s only a few What does your day involve? How many hours a day are you painting? My day is very different every day. Some mornings I don’t start work til

I probably don’t really want to know how many hours I work a day some days. They can be really long depending on deadlines for jobs

Does this style of sign writing also reflect your lifestyle? As in what are your other passions in life? Do they go hand in hand? Yeah I’m just being myself. I love art and vintage inspired things. I was born into a hotrod/50s family - my dad builds hot rods so I never knew anything else. I guess now I have taken what I have learnt from my dad and put my flair to it. My dad always said to me as a young child that there’s no good in being

a sheep, if you want to be noticed in life you have to be a leader and to have something out there for people to see When you get a sign painting job, how do you go about making it unique - do you find it easy or challenging to be constantly coming up with something new? Yeah it’s pretty tricky sometimes. I have those days when I’m just looking at a blank piece of paper for ages haha. On other days you have ideas just flowing out. When I have those days, I draw quick sketches of lay outs and put them in a book for when I know I’ll need the inspiration You have been asked by Movember to be one of their faces for this years campaign. What will this entail for you? Why do you think Movember is important (besides awesome moustaches!) I was pretty excited when I got the call from them, as I have had a mo for almost 6 years, its funny, people always say ‘oh cool mo, so you’ve grown it for movember?’ I’m like nope, this is just me. I’m not really sure what will come out of it but its all in fun and for a great cause. I do like moustaches and dressing dapper Contact: tjguzzardi@gmail.com

TOOLS Trade Of The

Mark Rabone from ESQ Male Grooming explains why technology is an essential business tool

LIKE ALL MEN’S HAIRDRESSERS, I RELY ON THE TOOLS OF MY TRADE TO CREATE A GREAT CUT. MY TOOLKIT ENABLES ME TO CREATE THE EXACT LOOK MY CLIENTS ARE AFTER, EVERY TIME. FROM MY FAVOURITE RAZOR WITH JUST THE RIGHT WEIGHT AND FEEL, TO THE PAIR OF JAPANESE STEEL SHEARS THAT ARE ALWAYS IN MY KIT, QUALITY TOOLS ARE CENTRAL TO MY CREATIVE PROCESS.

B

eing able to use the right products is just as important as the equipment that form the basis of my kit. I am always trying the latest product lines, trying to discover which products have that perfect balance between malleability, texture and hold. Although most of the cuts I work on are short, the look changes dramatically from guy to guy, which means matching their hair with the correct product is essential. A dry matte finish isn’t going to work for a slick pompadour, but thankfully there are lots of great choices out there. Just like the perfect pomade or pair of scissors, technology helps me create an exceptional experience for each and every client who steps through the door. It ensures everything runs smoothly in the salon, keeps my clients engaged and interested between visits, and helps me find out what they really think about ESQ – all of which ultimately increases the profitability of my business. In many ways, the technology I use is an extension of myself just as much as the other tools I use. As much as I would love to, I can’t contact every client individually to find out how they’re going and what they thought of their experience. What I can do is use my so ware to send them a follow-up email, so I can discover what they liked and didn’t like, and either

publish the results on my website or contact them to find out more and smooth over any complaints or issues. At ESQ, many of our clients are high-flying businessmen, architects and engineers. For them, the pace of life is lightning-fast, and they just don’t have time to call us to make an appointment. That’s why I use online booking – which is built into our website and Facebook page – to ensure I can capture their business the moment they think of booking. This does the trick, with 15% of our online bookings made outside of business hours. Once in a while, if we’ve had a cancellation, I need to be able to let people know there’s a spot free, fast, and I find that SMS marketing is the ideal way to spread the word. It’s also a great way to get quick results from promotions, as people generally read a text message the moment they receive it. In between visits, it’s important for me to stay in touch with my clients and keep them engaged. Automated email marketing makes this easy, and I always get a good response as I can send people out the latest news, styling tips and inspiration, based on what I know they are interested in. If you are a walk-in style barbershop, you can make life easy for your clients by giving them a simple 38

way to let you know they have arrived. The latest technologies enable them to check in at a kiosk in your waiting area, or remotely via their mobile phone. This keeps them feeling chilled out, and means you can stay focused on the client you’re with. No one likes to wait around for too long, least of all your time-poor clients. To save them from getting distracted or annoyed, you can encourage them to go and grab a coffee while they wait, and then send them an SMS a few minutes before they reach the top of the wait list. This ensures they won’t decide to get their hair cut somewhere else, another day. These simple yet effective tools are just as essential additions to my tool kit as any pair of shears or product line. Technology plays a big part in ESQ’s success – and it can help you grow your business, too. Once you’re fully equipped, your so ware will become second nature, helping you run your business and ensure clients walk away completely satisfied with their experience, every time. Mark Rabone uses Shortcuts, the global leader in innovative so ware solutions for the hair and beauty industry, setting the worldwide standard for smarter business technology. With cuttingedge features designed to take the stress out of managing a barbershop, Shortcuts can tailor a solution specifically to suit you.

hat is, of course, until the fashion pendulum swings back and we find something appealing about denim jackets and head bands all over again. Moustaches were also big in those days and although I was only a kid at that time, I remember dad’s moustache very well. Dad was the one who gently threw us around when play wrestling, he kicked the ball with us, taught us about cars and did cool manly things like diving, fishing and hunting. Manly stuff. To me, his moustache became associated with all

and already there are differences in the way they act towards me. I find they both touch my face a lot more than before. My youngest especially. She will stroke my facial hair without fail, whenever we cuddle. I guess it’s a point of difference, something that most other people close to her do not have. My eldest is very articulate and capable of expressing how she feels about daddy’s beard more readily. She also remembers me not having one until recently. Being a rather curious bloke, I quizzed her

between, it becomes part of you. Your kids will accept it regardless and it helps to form a mental picture of the man that helped them grow from vulnerable, dependent little ankle biters to happy, healthy and strong young adults. The concept that it might do more than that is an interesting one. There have actually been a few scientific studies into the the impression that a beard creates. Reports are that bearded men appear more masculine, and older. Other men tend to take bearded men more seriously

THAT 2.5 INCHES OF HAIR MADE DAD WHO HE WAS. WITHOUT IT HE WAS UNRECOGNISABLE. IT WAS CONFUSING FOR OUR LITTLE KID BRAINS AND I REMEMBER MYSELF AND MY LITTLE SISTER GOT PRETTY UPSET THAT SOME STRANGE MAN HAD SWANNED IN AND REPLACED OUR FATHER.

of that. Unfortunately though, at some point dad decided he no longer wished to sport the crumb catcher. We were still kids at the time, probably no more than 10 years old. When it happened it was a shock. That 2.5 inches of hair made dad who he was. Without it he was unrecognisable. It was confusing for our little kid brains and I remember myself and my little sister got pretty upset that some strange man had swanned in and replaced our father. Sure, he had the same black stubbie shorts and drove an identical Yarra-brown Kingswood, but that face, it wasn’t his. Fast forward about 25 years and now I’m the one growing the facial hair and my two little girls (aged 2 & 5) are no doubt seeing me and associating my beard with being a male role model. I’ve only been growing my beard out for a few months

the other day to get the low down. The conversation went something like this: “Do you like daddy’s beard?” “Yes, daddy, I love it” “Really? Why is that?” “Because it’s you daddy!” And I think that sums it up really. When you’re growing out your facial hair, you’re pursuing man’s rawest state. It’s how nature intended you to be before razors and shaving cream were invented. There could be something that kid’s are programmed to pick up on about that. I think they probably associate it with a masculine role model, and that’s something that sticks with them. Of course, I’m not saying that shaving makes you less of a man or a bad father, not at all. But it’s a nice thought that whatever you do with your facial hair, whether you shave it, grow it or do something in 41

and studies into attraction suggest that (if given the choice) women will generally prefer a tightly cropped beard to either a clean shaven face or a full beard. However, despite the interest in facial hair perceptions, I haven’t been able to find any scientific studies into how kids view them. All I’ve got is anecdotal feedback from my own little ones and so far, it’s all good. What I can say is that I am over the moon that my girls are enjoying their bearded dad. Although I don’t know everything about being one, I do know from experience that if I ever decide to change the beard while the kids are still young, it’s probably a good idea to give them a heads up so that I’m not met with screams of “ahhh, that’s not my dad, what happened to his face!?!”. Until then, beard on.

{ T H E S C I E N C E O F A G O O D S H AV E : P 1 } All barbers have their own methodology for a clean shave. How you arrived at your particular method may be a combination of your training and on-the-job experience.

N

o doubt the techniques you use work well, but you may not know much about their origins. Interestingly there is a lot of science behind shaving, with some of the first studies on the perfect shave dating back to at least the 1930’s. Before we examine some proven shaving techniques (that will be in part 2) it is important to have a brief look at the beard hair itself. Scientists at Gillette conducted one of the first studies into the differences between beard and scalp hair in the 1970s. They conducted detailed comparisons of the scalp and beard hairs of 3 major ethnic groups, namely Caucasian, Chinese and Negro. What they found was that there were quite stark differences in structure, regardless of racial background. Scalp hairs were thinner and more rounded than beard hairs, which tended to be asymmetrical with oblong and trilobal

(triangular) shapes. Beard hair had more cuticle layers, more erratic scaling patterns and extensive medullation (natural coating) compared with scalp hair. Basically, they found that beard hair was tough stuff. An even more detailed study on the structure of beard hair was published very recently in the British Journal of Dermatology. Using a series of modern imaging techniques the authors described in detail the interactions between the beard hair and the skin in which it grows. The findings showed that beard hair was akin to very thin metal wires, whereas the skin underneath it was lumpy and jelly-like. As a consequence, the beard hair is highly mobile within the skin, making it prone to pulling and stretching when shaved. This effect is enhanced by the narrow hollows that occur along the beard hair sha , allowing the hair to stretch and distort as a razor is dragged

49

across it. They also found that the lumpy skin was prone to getting in the path of the razor. It could also trap emerging hairs, creating bumps that can cause irritation and become infected. High resolution imaging revealed that beard hair grew at different angles depending on its location on the face. On the cheek it tended to grow at right angles to the skin, making it easier to cut. In contrast, neck hair tended to grow at a shallow angle, along the skin which caused a ‘tug and pull’ effect when shaving along the grain and potential skin nicks and irritation when shaving against it. The skin on the neck is much lumpier than on the cheek, making it significantly more susceptible to nicks. The process of shaving requires balancing the effective removal of hair against minimising the impact to the sensitive skin underneath it. It’s not an insurmountable problem. We’ll cover that ground in the next part so stay tuned.

writing. Now at 23 years old, I signed a recording deal in July 2013 and it’s been amazing

How did you get started in music? I started singing at a young age, about 4 years old. I could always hold a tune and I’ve always loved singing & great music. As I got older I sang in school variety concerts, bars and restaurants, basically anywhere that I could perform at as a teen. I also won some local talent quests which was a great experience. I learnt to play the guitar to accompany myself & it’s really helped shape who I am as an original artist & songwriter these days. When I was 18 I moved to Sydney to be part of a talent program called the TDP which helped me further develop my skills. Since then I have toured the country and performed my original songs in front of thousands of people. It’s been amazing so far!

Will you be travelling overseas at all with the cd? No solid plans at the moment but I really want to head to LA and Nashville at some stage hopefully soon and check it out. I would love to go to London as well What have been your biggest musical highlights so far? Going on tour late last year as special guest on Harrison Craig’s rural tour was definitely up there. Just me, my car, my guitar driving around the country performing to hundreds of people a night was definitely a huge highlight. Also signing with Sony was the best day of my life so far and releasing my single/music video have been huge highlights for sure! Performing at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, that was pretty incredible too

Who are your musical influences? I have so many influences, I’m a real sucker for an amazing song. Right now I’m into One Republic, Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, older Robbie Williams stuff and heaps, heaps more. Growing up I listened to a lot of old school bands like The Eagles & Fleetwood Mac

If you could meet one of your musical idols, who would it be? I would love to meet Chris Martin from Coldplay, Ryan Tedder, and Dan Wilson. They are amazing songwriters and artists. Would be a dream come true to hang out with them and maybe even co-write a song or two haha

Tell us about the new single, what should we expect in terms of style? So far I’ve released my debut single ‘We Are’ which is available on iTunes, and CD singles are available to order from Sanity & JBHIFI online stores. I would describe the style of the track as my own blend of singer/songwriter and pop with a bit of a rock tinge to it. I like to think ‘We Are’ is an anthem and I’m really proud of the lyrics. As for my other stuff I’ve been sort of experimenting for the past few years finding my sound, working with some great producers & co-writing. I’ve got so many different songs & demos at all different stages, ranging from raw singer/ songwriter style to really fresh sounding pop songs. I reckon the best albums are the ones with a few different sounds & styles and surprise songs that take you on a bit of a musical journey, rather than just sounding samey the whole way through. That’s what I would like to try do when I get to release my album

Where do you hope to be music wise in 5 years? I hope to have an amazing album out there & my own band really powering. Selling out big shows around Australia, maybe even the world. That’s my dream! I wanna hear my songs getting airplay on the radio If you had a child and they were a great singer, would you let them appear on The Voice Kids? Why or why not? Hmm I dunno really, I guess we’ll see what happens with these kids a er the show. But I think kids should just have fun being kids, like I don’t understand how it works. How does a little kid have a record deal and still go to school/make the most of growing up? THE SINGLE

You’ve recently been signed with Sony, tell us how this came about? I was introduced to Sony by legendary talk back radio host, Alan Jones. Alan heard one of my original songs ‘Nowhere Land’ when I was 19 and really loved it. I performed an acoustic showcase at Sony Studios in Sydney & signed a development deal shortly a er to work on recordings & song

What is your purpose in visiting Australia? We are here to really shout out about our brand, the new Headpaint Brunette professional colour line and of course our beautiful Paintbox range. We’re here to educate salons and stylists on the latest in cut and colour and trends from London, along with showcasing our latest inspiration - Cool Britannia. What content will you be covering during your education session for the cool Britannia tour? We really wanted to embrace every aspect of the hair industry so that everyone can take something away from the sessions. Rather than focusing on one area, we’ll be doing cut and colour presentations, delving into really technical aspects. We’re also bringing a big focus back to men’s hair. We’ve found men’s hair is very influential in London

and sometimes it’s about breaking all boundaries and doing something a little bit differently. What differences do you see between the UK and Australian hair industries? I think within the Australian market there’s a real focus on amazing, natural beachy looks; dipped ombre looks and working into colour. In the UK I think we’re a bit more radical and edgy with our styles - both cut and colour. We’d love to show you how to interpret that into the Australian market - not too out there, but just bringing something a little different to your clients other than just your long balayage hair. Is the hipster thing big quite big in London or not so much? Oh yes, it’s well and truly here too. The coffee guy? (laughs). Big focus on groomed hair, facial hair, beards and of course, tattoos. 54

What are the upcoming hair trends? I think from a colourists point of view things are becoming more abstract and simplistic. Geometric and shape focused. Layering natural colours. It’s been a bit loose with the ombre trends, and everything being a bit ‘home done’. I think it’s moving away from this - it’s all getting more edgy and refined. What makes Fudge different and why did hairdressers come to these sessions? I think people would come to Fudge to be inspired. That’s what fudge is all about. Pushing the boundaries but also having strong technical foundations. And then playing with them. I personally like to look outside the box, taking inspiration from the streets, editorial and the catwalk. This is what we’re trying to bring here.

ONE ON ONE SPORTS BARber Review

TURNSTYLES Dedicated barber Tim Dodd started Turnstyle Barbers in the UK 25 years ago. He established himself in 2007 in Australia and now has two stores on the Mid North Coast of NSW. One in Coffs Harbour and one in Bellingen. The stores are very cool with the retro black and white checked flooring, sporting racing red barbers chairs. Tim named the barbershops ‘sports barbers’ which obviously has something to do with his love of sports. This is a saying flagged on his website about his barbering and his sports affirmation: ‘Here at Turnstyles, The Sports Barbers, we just get it. Our goal is to make each customer feel like a champion and look like a champion.’ Tim has a cool bunch working with him in the two stores. He spreads his time between both. He is a natural teacher and likes passing on his skills to his team, offering them the traditional barbering techniques. The Bellingen store is located in the heart of the busy township, which is famous for its alternate lifestyle. It attracts many tourists all year round and boasts great cafes and cra shops. I was totally blown away with Tim’s

passion for his work when I visited him in his Bellingen store. I once lived in the town and worked straight over the road from Turnstyles. I know first hand the magic that happens there amongst the eclectic town folk. Turnstyles was a perfect fit with Tim’s personality, which makes him stand out in this space. The barbershop had a great range of self-branded street wear and I made sure I didn’t leave without securing a cool T-shirt. He has a good range of hair products and caters to all ages in this retail area. Tim has taken the initiative to bring over famous LA barber ‘The Real Trippy’ to do some workshops in September in Coffs harbor, and has already filled many of the ticketed spots. Tim himself will also be presenting information about the direction of the barbering phenomonon worldwide. The Cutthroat Journal will be taking part in the Coffs Harbour barbering workshops in September and will report on it for the next edition. It’s guys like Tim that are going to make this revolution of barbering stronger by making the changes that are needed and by inspiring and training barbers to keep traditions alive.

On arriving at One on One Sports Barbershop in Kingston Road Brisbane, we were met by Lance Liufau, well known for not just being a rad barber but for his amazing hair art. It was sort of hard to get a conversation in with any of the barbers there though. It was midweek and these guys were packed. It was awesome to see such a cool barbershop appealing to the masses, with a 5 year old and his mum being just as comfortable here as well as the older discerning gentleman and all the cool cats in between. These guys take their sports theme pretty seriously. The back wall of the shop is covered with epic sports themed photo wallpaper. There’s also a basketball hoop and lots of framed jerseys and memorabilia. Once you’ve taken in those sights and you’re still waiting for your trim up, you can pass the time by playing a game of pool if you so desire. Or you could peruse the One on One

Sports Barbershop apparel section. We could hardly take our eyes off the sick and slick Belmont barber chairs here, drooling much. While we were there, sipping on our delectable coffee from the shops own gargantuan coffee machine, these expert barbers accomplished styles from a slick medium pomp to a most excellent flat top. Now if you haven’t heard of Lance Liufau, let’s just say he’s a very skilled barber who’s zealous about his trade and about passing on his honed skills to younger barbers. You actually really need to check out his hair art. We’ve got just a taste of his skills featured in pics in this edition of The Cutthroat Journal. We really loved our time with these guys, you should check them out if you’re in the area. Skilled barbers – check, surrounded by sport – check, a quick game of pool – check, caffeine fix – check. You’re gonna walk out of here more of a complete man than you were when you walked in.

grand ROYAL BARBERS

397 LIVERPOOL ST, DARLINGHURST NSW 02 9360 3063

Bygone Barbers I was not expecting to find this amazing museum dedicated to barbering in Townsville, Queensland on a recent family holiday. I stumbled by chance across barber Franz Linzmayer and his magnificent collection of cutthroat razors and shaving mugs. Bygone Barbershop is very traditional and the layout is old school. He has renovated two red antique barber chairs, which look as new as they would have been when first purchased over 120 years ago. Franz has been cutting hair for 54 years. He started when he was just 14 years old. Coming from a long tradition of barbering, he knew this was his calling. The German-born Barber is a purist and believes there is no place in the industry for diverse style barber shops, as in, he believes barbers are barbers and hairdressers are hairdressers. He has a loyal following of men of all ages and the line up of customers kept growing as I cruised around the store taking pictures and chatting to this interesting guy about his colorful life When people go to Bygone Barber they can check out his collection of over 350 shaving mugs, 100

brushes and 100 plus cutthroat razors. Franz has been collecting for a long time and the items are displayed proudly around his workspace. The shaving mugs are quite rare and date back to the 1800’s. Franz has had an interesting career and has worked throughout the world, spending a large part of his life in Africa. He has also worked with many celebrities, including Liberace and Rock Hudson. We got onto the subject of the beard craze, which is very popular among the young mining boys in North Queensland and he rattled off some historical facts, ‘When Alexander the Great sent his men to the battle he asked all of them to shave all of their beards off. This was because when the enemies came along with the horses, they would rip each other’s beards and pull them down,’ Franz explained. Franz loves the North Queensland lifestyle and made it his home a er checking out many places in the world to settle. Townsville is lucky to have such an iconic barber in its company. Franz is great for a chat and listening to his life stories is a treat on its own.

I always wondered when hanging around with one of my good mates in Sydney why he always looked so neat and tidy. Years later when I asked him to come to the Cutthroat Journal launch in Sydney he asked if he could bring an old school friend Steve along, who was a barber. He turned out to be the creator of one of Sydney most iconic barbershops Grand Royal Barbers. Steve Salecich hails from 4 generations of Croatian Barbers. In 1999, Steve established Grand Royal Barbers first shop in Sydney’s CBD. In 2003, the Darlinghurst shop was opened a er forming a partnership with Maria Dillon. Steve and Maria identified back then that Sydney’s barber scene was dying and decided to bring this traditional culture and cra back to life. 15 years on, Steve and Maria now have a team of twelve barbers and master barbers from around the globe. There are an additional four trainee barbers being taught the trade in their 3 locations – Sydney CBD, Darlinghurst and Surry Hills. To become a master barber, staff must have a minimum of 10 years experience in their cra . Steve’s Aunt Sally takes rank, with 45 years of honing her blade. Grand Royal Barbers is a barbershop

for the modern guy. It’s where he can go for the latest hairstyle, a traditional shave; head shave or get a beard sculpture. The concept is a good mix of modern barber technique mixed and some good salon ideas, they especially have a good retail range of men’s grooming products. The barber I chatted to on the day I visited had come from the London barber scene and was full of passion, which is great to see in young barbers. Grand Royal Barbers is the home of some of Sydney’s finest barbers and their newest destination in the bustling suburb of Surry Hills at 381 Riley Street, is starting to get a good following from the many residents and the art industry that is popular to that area. ‘Sydney is now seeing a revival of the barbershop largely due to the return of the beards and the classic haircut. This in turn is showing an appreciation for our cra .’ Says Steve. He added, ‘It’s a trend I think will be around for quite some time, with our staff personally grooming over 1000 beards since the beginning of 2014, and it doesn’t seem to be letting up.’ For more information on Grand Royal Barbers, visit website at www.grandroyalbarbers.com.au or email grandroyalbabers@gmail.com.

’d say my art has a big old school /American traditional influence and look about it. More recently I have been inspired to paint larger and with more detail, especially with my Eastern/Hindu type works. I guess I developed this style through my interests in tattooing. I’ve always drawn since I can remember. I found drawing tattoo flash really interesting and satisfying and slowly developed over the years. With art and everything being so accessible through the internet it’s easy to find new artists. I am heavily influenced by tattoo art so I do follow a lot of those guys. A few big names are Chad Koeplinger, Steve Boltz, Guy Le ‘Tatooer’. The list could go on. Then there are the older original guys who were the pioneers in old school American/European tattooing -August ‘Cap’ Coleman, Paul Rogers, George Burchett. Music has always been a big part of my life since I the start of high school when I got my hands on drums and guitar. I used to play drums in a punk/ metal band in high school for about 6 years and during that time I slowly taught myself to play guitar. I play banjo in my spare time. The Ducale Monsoon bag turned out great! Im really stoked the guys got me involved. The front design is a classic looking ship representing the coffee beans coming by ship from India. The other parts of the bag came from older paintings of mine which suited the bag, including the Kali tiger head and the roses/flowers. I’m listening to a lot of music. Whats been spinning the most is a bit of a mix of everything - Isis, Cult Of Luna, Clutch, Some older works from Tricky, The Growlers, Sleep, The Black Angels, Lustmord and also the Out Of Your Mind Series by Alan Watts. I am working on a few things at the moment. A friend of mine who owns Mere Footwear is putting on an exhibition/campaign night called ‘From The Ground Up’. It will be to raise awareness of youth homelessness; all proceeds will be donated to Youth Off The Streets. Myself and other Sydney artists will be submitting artworks for the night. I am also working on a split flash page with Spencer Chasse, a tattooist from Canada. I’m designing a t-shirt for my good friend and Barber, Justin over in Chicago. Recently a friend of mine made a short film about my paintings called ‘Signatures’ series, so I am currently working on the logo design for his film and media company. I’ll be doing some live painting with Ducale Coffee at the Sydney Coffee Expo in September.

GROOMING

STYLING

• Shampoo regularly. As becoming as they are, moustaches collect things and no matter how fine the food, it doesn’t belong in your Mo.

• Invest in the right equipment. A man committed to serious moustachery should have a pair of barber scissors for precise trimming, a fine-toothed comb for guidance, a bright and large mirror for a good view, a razor, a steady hand and a sensible mind.

• Moustache hair is coarse and benefits from regular conditioning. Massage your Mo with a dollop of conditioner then rinse thoroughly. It will make it so er to touch for you and your intimate friends. Use a hot face washer to steam and cleanse the skin under your moustache that can suffer from drying and itching.

• Outline in your mind the shape of your moustache using your eye or the existing shape that needs to be freshened up.

• Dampen the moustache hair to trim. Wet hair is easier to cut but dry hair easier to trim. It is important to note that wet hair does bounce up when dry.

• Using the barber scissors, trim longer and stray hairs on the outer edge and bottom line of your moustache. You may wish to use a finger to hold the fine-toothed comb as a barber would to hold the hair as you trim. Trim conservatively. You can always go over it again.

• Using a fine-toothed comb, tidy your moustache so the hairs run in the direction you intend them to and lasso any strays into line.

• Run the clippers over the body of the Mo to get a consistent and even level of bush and bounce.

WELL GROOMED WALK AROUND THE INNER SUBURBS OF ANY MAJOR CITY, AND YOU’LL FIND THAT FACIAL HAIR HAS ONCE AGAIN BECOME A MEANS OF SELF EXPRESSION. MEN OF EVERY AGE ARE RE EMBRACING GROOMING HABITS THAT HAD LONG BEEN THE VICTIMS OF PRAGMATISM. THIS LED TO BORING, CLONE LIKE HAIRSTYLES AND FACIAL HAIR BEING ALL BUT BANNED.

T

oday’s barbering is anything but boring. Barbershops have again become places of community and fraternity, where gents both young and old can swap stories while getting spiffed up. Men, especially those in their twenties, are looking at imagery from their grandfather’s generation for inspiration to blend retro elements into modern styles. And, with the increasing interest in these new trends, has come a demand for courses teaching the necessary skills. The opportunities for barbers are now almost limitless, if you have the skills and imagination to create the trendy-yettailored looks your customers want. When asked what advice she could offer aspiring barbers, Aggs says, “Don’t be afraid to assert your own style and personality. In a new era when even the more mainstream clients will be experimenting with their looks, getting tattoos, piercings and cultivating bolder facial hair than ever before, it will pay to present your own distinct style. he inner workings of small business are a crazy thing. As any barber would know, o en margins are tight and making a profit isn’t always easy. All of us think that we deserve nice things and small business owners are no exceptionsometimes as a result they spend beyond their means. However, that is no reason to be a complete arsehole. One would have thought that if you can’t pay someone you would at least have the decency to sit him or her down and explain it.

If your business is floundering helplessly around in the dark, you need to shed some light on the situation - be honest with your staff and yourself. Let them know what is going on; most people are understanding and will work with you. While you’re at it, contemplate why your life is more important then that of the life of your staff. Why should you have nice things whilst they can’t afford 500 grams of mince? You did the right thing, your customer in retail should find another gig.

I’m an Englishman in his 30’s living in Australia. I’m the first to admit I’m not your all-Australian man. For instance I’m not always aware of which direction is which, I probably wouldn’t survive long in the bush without a guide and fixing things other than my hair is not my specialty. I’m part of a metrosexual generation that spends longer looking at myself in the mirror each morning than my wife. And even though my colleague with in his multi coloured running outfit and headband just ran the City2Surf 15 minutes faster than my personal best, I’m confident in the knowledge that my slick pompadour hair style, Billabong Shorts, Oakley Sunglasses and Fire Red Asics gel- Kayanos make it seem like I’m running circles around him. Presentation is everything! First impressions are all important! So don’t be ashamed lads. The girls are over the get out of bed, rough and ready look, preferring men who look like they give a toss about their appearance. Men who are unafraid to use products for so er skin, have trimmed facial hair and smell 68

good. Researchers report that men are now spending just slightly less money per annum on grooming products, and slightly more time cleansing, toning and moisturising than your average woman. Maybe we men need to spend longer in front of the mirror because we are beginners in the fine art of self-grooming. Either way the message is loud and clear - the Metrosexual man is here to stay. Say it loud and say it proud gents ‘I am a Metrosexual Man’.

started my hairdressing career at age 15 when I moved from Central Queensland to Brisbane. By 17 years of age I started working in a barber shop and just loved it. My boss was a patient and caring Greek Cypriot that took me into not only his business, but also his family. He taught me his amazing skill set. I was, in fact 21 when I first designed and prototyped the Style Station with the help and support of my boss. He was a wide eyed optimist that believed I had just created the next big thing (haha)!!! Back then things were so much harder to create and manufacture. I changed direction and chased the dream of becoming a rep for one of the big hair care companies and succeeded. A er many years of doing this, I had the opportunity to go back to my roots as a barber and got back to the daily grind. While working full time back on the floor you don’t find a lot of time to think about too much. It’s all about paying rent, wages, tax, super and all the other daily costs of keeping your doors open. About eighteen months ago, I was

i

watching a tv show with my father in law. It was about people that had a great idea and were trying to get it developed and take it to the high street in the UK. I mentioned to my FIL how I had designed and prototyped a clipper holder back in my early twenties. I grabbed a piece of paper and started drawing something that would work the way I needed it to in the salon today. (You have to remember in the nineties there were only 4 attachments) A er re drawing it, I called a friend who had a bit of knowledge in this field, he’s a partner in Juice hair care and a previous owner of PPS. He called Richard Gresham of Unity agencies (Wahl Australia). We had lots of meetings and drawings of prototypes until we came up with what is now the Style Station. We launched it to the market at Hair Expo in Sydney this year. We received a great response from the wholesalers and the general market. To date we have received emails of interest from the UK and Canada, and I’m very hopeful it will be seen as a beneficial product to barbers and salons alike around the world.’

avourite childhood memory There are so many. I guess to zoom in on my childhood it would be going on fishing trips with my father and family friend. It was the late 60’s and we would go camping for several days at a place called Dwellingup, 100 kms from Perth on the Murray River. We would catch and eat wild marron (Marron are the largest freshwater crayfish in Western Australia – and the third largest in the world. (Mmmmm marron). I can still see, taste, smell that whole experience (you’re making us hungry Simon). I was about 8 or 9 years old and loved the fire, gathering firewood, bacon and eggs cooking in the morning, Most of all what I loved was a er dark, pulling up those nets with the marron. I really had a great childhood with fantastic parents Who or what inspires you? People who have compassion for others, people who go over and above. Like the doctor who contracted the Ebola virus in Africa. He just selflessly threw himself into that situation with a high possibility of contracting the virus. It really is extraordinary. I find a lot of what’s going on in the world these days a bit depressing and it feels like we’ve lost our way but people like the surgeon and cardiologist that we had to put our trust in when our son Sam, was born with a heart condition. They not only are incredibly skilled at what they do but they have to reassure and help parents to stay calm. I’m also inspired by big thinkers.

It feels like we’ve become so narrow minded as a country. I like people who look at the big picture, like what sort of country we want to be living in 30 years from now Fave album of all time An album called Francis Albert Sinatra (you might know him as Frank) and Antonio Carlos Jobim. I’m a huge Sinatra fan. I first listened to him when I was 12 and it was like a revelation to me Fave men’s grooming product Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream What are you reading at the moment I just finished reading a great book by a Western Australian author called ‘The Light Between Oceans’ by M L Stedman. The book is set in WA and is the setting is just a er WW1. It’s fairly bleak, not really upli ing, but it was definitely a page turner for me The last thing that made you laugh out loud Just about anything Andrew O’Keefe (host of Weekend Sunrise on channel 7) says. Between breaks he has everyone, the crew, all of us rolling around laughing. He’s quite ‘naughty’. If you’re going to work weekends as I have for the last 8 or 9 years, you want to enjoy being around the people you work with.. Also I love that my kids have a slightly warped sense of humour. My father has a wonderful sense of humour and is a great storyteller. We take far too many things far too seriously these days. Five words to describe yourself

Ageing. Balding. Vain. Stubborn. Africathile (crazy about Africa!) Something no one knows about you Not many people know I have a condition called Urticaria (it’s an actual thing). It’s basically an allergy to cold. I had spent my whole life in the water. We were living at Coogee and I would go to the water about 3 or 4 times a day. About 13 years ago I got out of the water and was really itchy, thinking it was sea lice but nobody else had it. I had a few fainting episodes etc, it was a little scary. So I googled my symptoms and sure enough I found this condition and was tested for it and confirmed to have it. Basically if you immerse yourself in cold water, 15 or 16 degrees, for 10 minutes, you can die Advice to your 18 year old self Take more risks. I was a little too conservative in my approach to life. So I would say just go for it. Be much, much, much less afraid of failure. Don’t be afraid of failing, always have a crack. Give more of yourself. Don’t shut yourself down or shy away from loneliness and fear. Be open to experience good and bad, both are a part of life and make us who we are Fave sport to watch or play I would have to say baseball. My son Sam plays baseball, I fell in love with the sport while travelling in the US for Beyond 2000 in the 80’s. I also absolutely love equestrian. My daughter Stella is great at dressage and I just love watching it

How The Saucy Wench Tamed The Sea Dog { NASTY B}

Well known for his charm and cheeky charisma, Nasty B quickly made a name for himself in the industry both on the stage and behind the scenes. He was to be the next big thing in the hip hop scene and there was major interest in him from the US. But suddenly, the emerging superstar pulled the plug and decided that life should take a different turn. He disappeared from the music scene just as quickly as he had appeared. Fast forward 10 years and here we are announcing Nasty B’s debut solo album simply titled ‘How The Saucy Wench Tamed The Sea Dog’. It’s a hip hop ode to all things pirate and is inspiring in its originality. The first single to be released in October is ‘Claim that Boo’-ty’, a song he says, was inspired by his recent proposal to fiancé, Bek. ‘I had just woken up and I looked at her and all I could think was “I gotta claim that booty” so, right then and

‘NASTY B, HE’S HOMEGROWN, HE’S NO CLONE.’ …..SO HERALDED THE NOW INFAMOUS NASTY B’S ARRIVAL ON THE OZ HIP HOP MUSIC SCENE. HE WAS THE FOCUS OF THE CULT CLASSIC SONG BY THE BAND NICE, WHICH WAS INGENIOUSLY TITLED ‘NASTY B’, SO THERE’D BE NO MISTAKING THE IDENTITY OF ITS SUBJECT. THE SONG WAS FEATURED ON TRIPLE J IN ITS TIME AND WAS SYNONYMOUS WITH THE SURF AND SKATING SCENE.

there, in my best underwear, I got down on my knees and begged in my finest pirate voice ‘ARRRRGGH Bek, would ya mind if I fired me cannon through your porthole, for life?’ There are 8 tracks in all, listed as follows: • Claim that Boo’-ty • You may think it’s the ARRRRGGH but it’s the Sea • Lad, Lass, Lassie • I Be Three Sheets to the Wind • Walk tha Plank Ya Scurvy Dog • Do you Wanna Shiver Me Timbers • My Futtock Shrouds fading • Red Beard Riot Our prediction? This is gonna be big. There have already been claims of this being ‘the greatest pirate hip hop debut album Australia has ever seen.’ You heard of it first at The Cutthroat Journal. { INTERVIEW}

THE DAY I SPOKE WITH RICHARD FIDLER IS ONE I SHALL REMEMBER FOREVER. IT’S A DAY I’LL FONDLY RECALL TO MY GRANDCHILDREN AS THEY PLAY THEIR VIDEO GAMES AND PAY ABSOLUTELY NO ATTENTION TO WHAT I’M SAYING. I’M GETTING EMOTIONAL NOW.

82

Richard Fidler R i c h a r d c o nfi r med so met hi n g speci a l when I spok e t o hi m. S o m e th i ng I h a d a lwa y s k n o wn i n my hea rt t o b e t rue. . .

f Batman and Superman had a fight, who would win?’ I asked him, casually, with no expectation of a revelation. There was a pause. ‘What a brilliant question’ was his initial response. I mumble something clever like ‘you are’. He then went on to tell a magical story about how a guy named Frank Miller actually wrote a comic book called ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ about that very thing in 1986. And that in this magical comic, Batman had, without a doubt, pulverized Superman using a kryptonite tipped arrow. And so now I know it’s true. The answer had always been Batman. Wikipedia even confirms it. Anyway, he had some other stuff to talk about as well. You may know Richard from such musical comedy trios as ‘Doug Anthony All Stars’ (DAAS), such TV shows as ‘Race Around The World’ and an ABC radio program called ‘Conversations with Richard Fidler’. DAAS, which was made up of Richard, Paul McDermott and Tim Ferguson, were nothing if not controversial in their comedy. This could be due to the fact that, as Richard explained, The Sex Pistols were one of their biggest influences. ‘Hit them hard and make them laugh was our objective’. ‘Our style was very much confrontational, we were always trying to say things that hurt.’ Richard recalls a performance on TV show ‘The Big Gig’ where DAAS decided to tackle the issue of feminist literature. ‘We were basically saying that we were on their side but that we thought we could do a better job at feminist lit than the feminists could (you can youtube the performance, there is mention of feminist literature needing more ‘balls’ – too funny). We were living in Fitzroy, inner city Melbourne at the time, and we

I

basically aliented half of our audience with that performance.’ Richard describes his time with DAAS like this ‘It was such a great big, hairy, complicated, horrible, delightful time. At its best it was wonderful, at its worst it was awful. And smelly, it was terribly smelly.’ A er DAAS split in 1994, Richard was married and was looking at a career in animation in the UK but was unable to obtain a visa. It was then he was offered work in TV, on a show called Race Around the World on the ABC. He is currently the host of daily radio program ‘Conversations with Richard Fidler’. If you haven’t listened to ‘Conversations’ well, you’re missing out. Each weekday for an hour, Richard interviews a person about their life. It’s gripping, fascinating listening. I’ve been known to sit in my car for 20 minutes a er arriving home so I can hear the full conversation. ‘When I first started doing the show I was told, keep the interviews to 7 minutes, people don’t want to hear more than 7 minutes. I’ve found that not to be true. There’s a whole universe of stories to be told.’ The majority of people Richard interview may be relatively unknown, a celebrity would be rare to encounter on the show. “I think listeners enjoy hearing the story of someone they may not have heard of but someone with conviction who has a testimonial to tell’. The genius in Richard’s interviewing seems to be in his selfless curiosity. He admits at times he has found himself trying to be composed in listening to a guests story but he says ‘I just have to take a deep breath, I don’t feel embarrassed, it’s not about me.’ There is a genuine interest in Richard’s voice,

W R I T T E N

B Y :

a childlike inquisitiveness, as he speaks to his guests. ‘I’ve listened back to interviews I’ve done on topics that I wasn’t really interested in, we don’t do that anymore because listeners can pick up on that.’ He goes on, ‘Curiosity is the nature of the show, it would be boring otherwise. You have to infect your listeners. ‘ Anyway Richard back to this super hero stuff. ‘Did you know that there was an essay written in the 1960’s about how Superman and Lois Lane could never have been married or had sex – the kryptonite sperm would have killed her and if that didn’t kill her, once the baby started growing it would’ve punched its way out of her stomach’ he offers, unprompted. Sigh. With that our conversation is over and I’m le with, let’s face it, a bit of a crush now, actually.

Imagine the kilometres you could walk if you decided to get off the bus one stop early. It might only be 3 to 5 minutes from your barber shop but add that up all week and, if you work 6 days a week, it’s possibly an hour

of walking. What about taking the stairs at the shopping centre instead of waiting on the escalator. How about going for a walk to see the sunrise instead of watching Sunrise whilst sitting on the couch. We are designed as humans to be able to move fast, jump, climb, throw and li heavy things, among other things. If these things are a struggle then maybe it’s time to start thinking about getting a little more healthy movement in our lives. Get outside and explore. The world is amazing and looks a lot better when your in it and not just watching it. We’d also love to hear from you guys.
