Sean Edwards - Publisher of the CUTTHROAT JOURNAL WELCOME TO ANOTHER NEW YEAR IN MEN’S CULTURE AS WE EMBARK ON SOME NEW JOURNEYS AND ADVENTURES AROUND THE GLOBE.
hope all our readers enjoyed some time off over our summer break and are refreshed at the start of the new year, ready to capitalize on some incredible new ventures. The Cutthroat Journal is starting the year looking for Australia's Top Barber, teaming up with Barber Brands International and Hair Expo for an exciting new competition. The competition will see three Live State Heats, with the Final being held at Hair Expo, awarding Australia’s Barber Brands International Barber of the Year.
when in Los Angeles, I visited a barbershop that had vintage arcade games, which waiting customers could play whilst in line. Having a theme in a barbershop is fun, allows customers to get in touch personally with the business owner and is good for a starting chat. Many barbers I talk to, that collect barber memorabilia for their shop displays, are given amazing relics of the past by their loyal followers. A lot of barbershops I’ve experienced around the world look like barber museums in a great gateway to bygone days.
The Barber segment across Australia is still growing fast and evolving with many new shops opening around the country, and it has been fun to see the barbershop morph into some creative concepts. O en a barbershop is a reflection of the owner’s personal lifestyle and their passion is transferred into the design of the business. One example of this is a recent business trip to the town of Young, when we came across a barbershop being dedicated to the late Peter Brock, racing car legend. The walls were adorned with Peter Brock memorabilia including photos, posters and model cars. Another example of a cool space, was a working railway track incorporated into the barbershop, with model trains tooting their way around the business. Last year
The Cutthroat team will also be visiting many national barbershops, signing up subscribers who want to be well informed of new products and latest trends, via the journal’s informative layout. If you see one of our team come into your store, we’d love you to share with us a little bit about your business concept and the direction you would like to see barbering develop in our country. We will be endeavouring to write more barber reviews and showcasing successful models that will hopefully inspire tired businesses to reinvent themselves.
I
Please sit back and enjoy our first edition for 2018 and best of luck from the Cutthroat team for the year ahead.

having Mugs back in the day were the status symbol of a Barber Shop, and they were also the status of the customer that frequented the establishment. The number of mugs that were displayed in the shop was a direct reflection and the popularity and quality of the barbers business. The shaving mugs were displayed on the walls of the shop and each customer was strongly encouraged to purchase one of their very own. The mug would then stay in the shop and be used on only that customer. The Barber would make a fourhundred per cent mark up on the shaving mugs! With that in mind you can imagine they would spend most of the shave trying to convince the customer to buy their personalised mug. Sounds like too much of a hard sell to me!! So many questions come to mind from the history of this story. What are the signs to show we are a popular Barber Shop in our current climate? Instagram. How much we do or don’t charge. The products we sell. The clientele we have. Location. How do we push the products we sell? Personally, I think most hair products sell themselves. If you’re stocking great products and using them to style or finish a clients hair, a lot of times they may ask the question about it themselves, there’s an opening to sing it’s praises. My belief is if you try and push too hard, you can lose valued clients.
There’s always the 'McDonalds approach' while you’re at the counter, ‘Would you like some fries with that?’ We’ve recently had a guy come and work for us in my Barber Shop. He’s travelling from the UK and can only work for 6 months on his visa. It’s been an awesome experience all round. It’s always so important to have your core team, your reliable, constant, long term barbers. But it’s also great to have different experiences with people who are travelling, people who have trained overseas etc. My thought is, don’t discount someone that may only be able to give you six months, because you may all just learn some invaluable stuff along the way! Enough of that, and down to the ‘need to know’ section. We’ve had a great start to the year and hope that you have too. We’re pumped to announce the “Barber Brands International Barber Of the Year 2018” will be holding heats around this fine country. In Brisbane it will be held at Jimmy Rods, in Sydney at Ultimo TAFE, and in Melbourne at Jimmy Rods. The final will again be held at Hair Expo in Melbourne. It always seems like a big show when the Expo is in Melbourne, thanks to Hair Expo for their continued support of The Cutthroat Journal and the Barber Industry. Well, that’s it from me, hope you enjoy this fine edition of The Cutthroat Journal. Don’t be a stranger Jimbo

have witnessed this, year in and year out, and 2018 is no exception. However, the pursuit to hirsute is always changing. This year it seems we are letting the lumberjacks lay, and instead bringing back the well-groomed gentleman. Beards are staying close to the face with clean, sharp lines. “How do we get these beautiful clean lines?” I hear you asking. Lucky, you have me to answer your questions. Baxter of California have recently released their Beard Line Up Shave Gel. A nonfoaming and, most importantly, clear shave gel. It is great for barbers, but also easy for your clients to use at home. Similarly, Milkman Grooming Co have their Clear Shave Gel, which allows you to see what you are shaving, and is soap-free, so your client’s skin won’t dry out like a desert. I have heard from multiple sources that growing a beard is no mean feat.
I recommend a beard oil or beard serum to help make the process as smooth as possible (pun intended) and to counteract rough and itchy symptoms. For particularly unruly beards, and gents with skin on the dryer side of life, maybe give Bossman Beard Jelly a go. Beard Jelly is thicker than your average beard oil, meaning a lot less gets you a lot further. It works best when combed through the beard from root to tip, just make sure to get to the skin beneath the beard. With four scents to choose from you are spoilt for choice. I’ll leave you with a fun little tip I recently learnt from a barber friend of mine. Bossman Beard Jelly can also work wonders as a pre-shave when a gent is ready to start fresh. Rub your Beard Jelly of choice through the beard and cover with a hot towel. It will so en the hair to help avoid drag on the straight blade and prevent razor burn.

Pop up stores of festival clothing, accessories, food tents, merchandise and even barbers are jumping in on this scene, as I recently witnessed at Fotsun. Under the blazing hot sun in a vineyard, under the stars on a field, in a wooded area with towering trees, rainforest settings, nothing is off limits. You find them twirling batons, hula hoops, lazing on rugs, on each others shoulders, letting themselves go to a culture that traditionally began many years ago. step by step
A STEP BY STEP HAIRCUT BROUGHT TO YOU BY ONE OF THE AMAZING CUTTERS JAX @MEN+CO BARBERSHOP MELBOURNE CITY.
We use the cutting system trained by American Crew and its fundamentals. We have a classic cut with a detailed medium taper, and elevated height on top with a disconnected front for a pompadour finish in shape.
3 We always finish with a light shear over comb to establish a hand finished result in the clipper work, and also to blend the texture of a blade throughout the bottom part of the haircut.
2 1 Sectioned from the divide in the head shape where the head starts to round, we use vertical sections using palm to palm. Cutting in a downward motion keeping the structure sharp and lean to create the base shape on the bottom half of the head.
Following the guide in a lapping motion from the right hand side to the le , once complete an element of clipper over comb and free hand clipper to establish the natural taper. We never block off the back of the haircuts, as to do this would create an unnatural finish and a shortening in profile with such strong horizontal lines.
20
4 Jax then transitioned into diagonal Horizontal sections to blend the top and bottom together, the diagonal giving an ease to extend and exaggerate the front length for desired height once connected to the top.
5 Connecting and balancing the top with side to side sections and elevating the hair straight up with a simple point cut design through the highest part of the head. Important to factor the direction of texture when doing this action so we used a multiple direction approach (cutting both angles in the point cut le and right) to establish a natural push in texture direction and gaining more options through styling.
6 Detail and finish in this haircut is with a Feather Razor, with elements of support cutting to give the hair behind it elevation and li .
7 Style and finish is the fun part of this look with firm hold gel, dried in and using the air in the opposite direction to fall, getting the hair to stand up off the scalp and move freely but firm. Gel is like the support beams in a building, it holds it up but you never see it (if used properly)
21
8 Finishing this shape we chose to use a moulding clay by AC, which saturated the hair enough to show off the texture cut in by Jax, however enough that it dries with a matte finish so control is optimum. Good separation occurs giving the client a really nice finish.

In the beginning, BA was indeed, all about blokey humour; an intense inhale of easy breathing masculinity in an increasingly oppressive feminine culture. First impressions do count and they certainly stick; BA will testify to that. Yet, a year down the track, and 570,000 followers later, this is a group now offering an incredible support network to men across Australia.
“It’s so encouraging to see blokes backing blokes day in day out,” says Paulke. “We have plenty of guys struggling in relationships, or a er breakups, they need support. If they’re battling for custody in the family court, or not allowed to see their children, we can all rally round so they don’t feel alone. H
ow do you feel about owning a barbershop and what is the meaning behind the name Breethaz’? Going into business for myself has been one of the most challenging, yet rewarding experiences l’ve had to date. Operating on another level, managing staff, balancing the books. Between the sacrifices you make in growing a new business and the demands of a growing family, you have to strike a balance. I wanted people to know that even though I’m female, this is a barber shop. Breethaz’ represents the males wanting to make us their Barbers. It’s about men, The Breethaz’, the brotherhood, The Brethren.
Not many barbers were doing hair art, so we wanted to create more options. Every barber we have here has their own different styles of cuts and services. I’m well known for the clientele I’ve had over the 7 years. Players from the Waikato Chiefs, Super rugby, All Blacks past and present, MMA fighters, a host of talents have put their trust in our skills. Generations of families; Grandfathers, Fathers, Brothers, and sons all coming together through our door. Entertainment execs, DJs, Musicians and our grass roots clients new and loyal, all walks of life have sat in my chair. We built our reputation from the quality of our cuts and services, and so much of our good press has been word of mouth. Even though we had people like Liam Messam and Sonny Bill Williams rock up on our doorstep, we made it known that whoever came through our shop, 29
every single client who chose us to be their Barbers, they were our MVPs, Most Valuable People. What advice would you give someone thinking about getting in to barbering? Invest in your skills and in your equipment, also develop the finer skills of customer engagement, business management, presentation, health and hygiene. Stay teachable, even when you think you know it all, there is always so much more you can learn. Communication with your boss and clients is key to delivering what the client wants and retaining your clients, and keeping your job. What are some of the things you're most proud of in your barber career? In 2016 I competed in New Zealand’s first Battle of the Barbers, hosted by Barber Cra New Zealand. I entered in 2 different categories and won the Master section in the pattern, going up against 6 Master Barbers with only 1 winner in that section, I was stoked to be the only female in that category.

hile I was still serving and really enjoying the work, travel and adventure of the Marines I knew I didn't want to do it forever and I wanted better for my family. I started to look into different avenues like most guys do which were in the security world. The options were really, Close Protection, Body guarding, Maritime security or Surveillance. I went searching for answers to help find out what avenue I wanted to go down by

Barbering? But with it was a whole vision! What about a cool, manly place for men to come relax, talk and get the haircut, somewhere that they forget about the stresses of being a man. I thought to myself i could do that! Hang out, chat shit with

In between getting thrashed around the desert I was offering the lads free haircuts just to try and improve with the guidance of a Paratrooper, who was a former barber before he joined. From then on all I did was cut and shave guys relentlessly. I came back and did a small barber introduction course and with

if you leave and it all goes to shit? The plan doesn't work out? God is on our side, Laura and I decided Lets do this! We decided I was going to get qualified and train with the Gents of London Barber Academy before moving our family across the world to open a barbershop, as I told my Commanding officer whilst he looking in shock at me! Haha! Your mental Banford. But that was the plan. Scared, yes but if I didn't do it i’d still be in, unhappy. Well I excelled at the training and got offered a job before I finished the course at Cardiffs most popular barbershop “Keep the Faith social club”. I worked there whilst finishing off my time in the Marines before moving my wife, 2 stepsons and new born baby to a country they've never been to before! AUSTRALIA We arrived in Toukley on the NSW Central Coast in 2016 with a suitcase each and gratefully moved into my families rental property. With the help of my father I converted the garage into a barbershop and quickly got busy. A er 6 weeks of trading a received a knock on the door from the council
informing of a few extra changes I had to make to continue trading. Absolutely gutted and unsure how to provide for my family I wasn't sure what to do. Laura was keeping us afloat working at a local hairdresser. Amazingly the local barber who had been there for 18 years approached me as he was retiring. We came to an agreement and we took over his shop some weeks later. Well, that was the start of everything. It was meant to just be me but immediately Laura and I were all in, working flat out 6 days a week, to now we have a team of 5 great guys working in our new shop that we opened just before Christmas. We feel truly blessed, humbled and love everyday with our team and more importantly or customers. Don't get me wrong it wasn't easy, but its worth it to follow the calling I am so grateful to have been given, to be In a position to help lads when they're down or uncertain/ confused, facing challenges I may have experienced myself already etc thats a privilege in my eyes that they trust me, and my aim is to make a difference in as many mens lives, one haircut at a time ! thats were we are at. 31
Where to now? Well, we aren't anywhere near finished and have a massive thirst to develop and deliver our vision to the men of central coast, we are concentrating on building a strong team, like family we want to nurture, invest and help our guys grow in the areas they are drawn towards within the Industry! We truly admire our teams talent, commitment and loyalty. We are also in the midst of renovateons for our up coming coffee bar addition, we just want to make it a cosy but quirky place to to hang out have a chat a haircut a complimentary beer, or a coffee! Play chess, play cards play sudoku, play the guitar, Listen to tunes on the juke box from a range of different eras, We will strive to continue to make people smile with our work and by speaking with guys. Our ethos hasn't changed. Either in a garage or bigger shop its all about a place for a man to get away from the stresses of life, talk/don’t talk and just chill for 30 mins. It’s his time. Well thats our story. Thanks for reading. Danny and Laura Hearts and Minds Barber Emporium.

THE HAMBURGER HAS COME A LONG WAY IN ITS EVOLUTION AND CAN STILL WORK ITS WAY INTO ANY CULTURAL CUISINE; WHETHER IT’S DOUBLE BEEF, A FILLET OF CHICKEN OR EVEN A VEGGIE PATTY, THE HAMBURGER IS HERE TO STAY.

The humble hamburger - the favourite food type globally has seen a popular rise in its uptake as a snack food choice.
M
any food cuisines have been reinvented over the last few years, as our world has become much smaller with communication channels like social media. Instagram food pictures have made us all crave for the reinvented quick food service meal. The humble hamburger - the favourite food type globally - has seen a popular rise in its uptake as a snack food choice. The burger was once accounted with a particular country in its menu design, for example Australians love beetroot on their burger, as Americans smother their burger in pickles. Today the burger is crossing many cultural barriers in its traditional makeup, we are seeing chefs create amazing hamburgers that would sit well in fine dining restaurants. Social media groups like The Fatties Burger Appreciation Facebook site has over 10,000 members in Australia. This group relies on punters putting up burger reviews from the thousands of outlets around Australia that has
a gourmet burger on their menu. The new age burger can be a simple traditional American style burger, or a complex creation that is a gastronomical masterpiece and can be priced accordingly. Recently in my research I had a new age burger that consisted of (deep breath): Slow cooked Black Berkshire Pork Belly, finely sliced Rare Venison Rump, King Island Blue Cream Cheese, finely chopped Spanish onion and roughly diced Shiitake Mushrooms to bind the mince, topped with honey-infused smoked bacon and served on a brioche bun. To finish it off, they then slathered the base with a Kewpie mayo/mild American mustard mix and garnished with fresh baby spinach and green tomato pickles. I bet you are hungry now! A top shelf burger like this can be priced at around $30, as people will pay the money for a well-presented burger.
Burger Chains in Australia are springing up everywhere - businesses like Chur Burger,
Grill’d and Burger Urge, just to name a few. Even McDonald’s have stepped into designer burgers that can be made specially to order. McDonald's have spent millions of dollars developing an electronic burger creation consult, where customers can pick and choose a meat type, fillings, burger bun and sauces to their liking. Prices can range according to the burger, a big step up from a $2 burger to a $16 purchase. Around the world we are seeing people flock into classic burger joints like In N Out and Shake Shack for their famous traditional standard burger. People in the know can approach the counter at In N Out and get a secret burger, if you know the correct code word, which makes it a bit of fun from the ordinary process.
The Hamburger has come a long way in its evolution and can still work its way into any cultural cuisine; whether it’s double beef, a fillet of chicken or even a veggie patty, the hamburger is here to stay.

INGREDIENTS olive oil 2 medium onions, peeled and finely chopped 4 slices of bread, crusts removed 500 g quality lean minced beef 1 teaspoon sea salt 1 heaped teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 large free-range egg 4 slices of cheese 4 rashers bacon 4 large burger buns, 1 soft round lettuce, leaves washed and spun dry 2 tomatoes, sliced 4 gherkins, sliced a few pickled chillies
METHOD Put a splash of olive oil into a large frying pan on a low heat and add your chopped onions. Fry for 10 minutes or until the onions have softened, then put to one side to cool completely. Blitz your bread in a food processor until you get a fine consistency. Oil a clean baking tray and put aside. Put the cooled onions into a large bowl with the rest of the burger ingredients. Use clean hands to scrunch the mixture together really well, then divide into equal balls for burgers. Wet your hands and roll the balls into burger-shaped patties about 2cm thick. Place your burgers on the oiled baking tray and pat with a little olive oil. Cover them with cling film and put the tray into the fridge for at least an hour, or until the patties firm up. If using a frying pan or griddle pan, put it on a high heat now and let it get really hot. However you decide to cook your burgers, they’ll want around 3 or 4 minutes per side. When your burgers are nearly cooked on one side, add the rashers of bacon – whichever way you’re cooking them – then flip the burgers and cook the bacon until golden and crisp. When the burgers are cooked, halve your burger buns and warm them through. Put the bacon on a plate lined with kitchen paper to drain. When everything comes together pop your burgers on to their buns, add all your toppings.

acceptance of experience, which is associated with positive psychological and physical outcomes. This in particular is handy for those
shitty days when you’re dealing with menace staff members, unpaid bills, family life and that customer that comes in directly after his gym session…(have a shower mate). It is so easy to adapt this mindset to your everyday lifestyle, why wouldn’t you want to be more focused, less agitated and better able to cope in high pressured situations, both at home and at work. The simple act of bringing your awareness back into the present moment can take up to less than 10 minutes out of your day. It really is a simple task that has proven to have positive psychological benefits. So what’s 10 minutes out of your day to become a modern man with a good attitude.Test the theory and try 1 of the below for a week.
Morning
Noon
Night
First thing in the morning when you open your eyes, instead of picking up your phone or whatever else that needs attention, stop and take 3 deep breaths, close your eyes again and do a quick body scan. Run through each part of the body, paying special attention to the way each area feels, start with your toes, run up through your legs into your pelvic region…keep moving, focus on the butt, tailbone, abdomen, chest, back down through your arms, shoulders, hands and most important the neck, face and head, jaw and mouth, end with a smile.
Lunch time, take a seat to eat and really take notice of what you are eating. A simple sanga that the missus made? But really take the time out of your day to see, taste and chew your food, not only will you reap the benefits of better digestion, you will save more money because you will eat less…do it for the cash saving if anything.
The days work is done, it’s time to step out of auto pilot and 'mindfully walk to your car', you’re doing it anyway. Keep your phone in your pocket and take time to be aware of your own thoughts. Start by focusing on your breathing first, then move your awareness to what it feels like to be in your body, and finally move on to your thoughts.
Words by Roxanna Chan
This is just a time to debrief on your day, be aware of what comes into your head, but resist the urge to label or judge these thoughts. If your mind wanders, acknowledge whatever it was and bring your attention back to your thoughts, don’t get run over though.

indfulness is practiced by the intelligent, who actively live every day, understand the value of their life and have a craving to achieve the most that they can. History tells us that men tend to stray from their ‘touchy feely side,' but the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that in 2016 around 1.5 million Australian men aged 18 years and over (17 per cent) had a self-reported mental or behavioral condition. So men it’s time to include ‘mindset’, along with beards & tatts to the checklist to becoming a modern day man.

started braiding hair really early, I was about 13-14 years old. My father died when I was 15 so I got legally emancipated. I needed to make money so I started charging to braid hair. Oddly no one taught me how to braid, I would just practice on my friends until I got really good. I started doing designs because I loved to draw, so I had the idea of parting the hair with a pen (of course with no ink) so the lines could really show and the design would look clear. Once I got good enough with the parts the designs came in easy. I knew that people loved symmetry so I would try to keep my designs as even as possible. By 15 I started working at a barber shop braiding hair, my brother
I
helped me get that job because he knew the barber who ran the shop. From there I started getting a lot of connections, especially in the music industry. Since it was a Latin barbershop I was introduced to Latin artists like Luny Tunes, Tego Calderon, Yandel (from Wisin Y Yandel) Farruko, Arcangel and a few others but I can’t really remember their names. I also braided some American artists and athletes like Pusha T, a few players from the Miami Heat like Ronny Turaif and Gerald Green, baseball player Bryce Harper, and my favorite football player DeSean Jackson. There are others, but too many to remember,' 15 years of braiding you tend to forget peoples names. All the designs I do, require different times to 38
complete, it could be as fast and simple as 15 minutes for two braids or as intricate as 4-5 hours, but usually within the range of 1-2 hours I can get most designs done. I get inspiration for my designs everywhere - I might see a design on Instagram and tweak it to make it my own, or maybe I’ll walk down a hallway that has a carpet with a pattern and I’ll take that and try it on a client. My inspiration comes from everywhere and everyone. I just want everyone to stick around and keep on watching the things I come up with, so that way I might be able to inspire other braiders. Braids have been around since the dawn of time, so as long as people have hair, braids will always be in trend.

barber banter WHEN YOU WALK INTO A BARBERSHOP, A NUMBER OF UNSPOKEN AGREEMENTS ARE MADE BETWEEN BARBER AND CLIENT. UNDERSTANDABLY, YOU NEED TO POSSESS A LARGE AMOUNT OF TRUST FOR ANYONE THAT COMES AT YOU WIELDING A CUT THROAT RAZOR AND IN RETURN, YOUR BARBER OFFERS YOU A COLD BEER ON A WARM DAY AND ENGAGES YOU THROUGH CONVERSATIONAL BANTER.
W
hilst this form of etiquette has not changed since Barbering commenced, barbershops are failing to adhere to the basic core values that once existed in the trade. I respect all business leaders, specifically in an industry like barbering, where it has expanded so quickly in the last decade. As a result of this development and the requirement to maintain industry standard, healthy competition between chains is expected. However, Barbers should also be working together to strengthen the trade entirely. Recruiting Barbers from other businesses, specifically Apprentices is an incessant occurrence at the present time. We are funding the training and development of these Apprentices and they are being poached by other businesses prior to the completion of their qualification. Rather 40
than cowardly undermine other chains and purposefully headhunt Barbers, who have spent money and time to educate these Apprentices, employers should be investing their own finances and offering job vacancies to young and unemployed members of the community, who are interested in obtaining a Barbering Apprenticeship. There’s also a lot of negative discussion about competitors, in this industry. Everyone is so focused on winning, that morals, kindness and respect is often sacrificed. Rather than continuously criticise your opposition, let’s bring back the traditional values and work together to ensure quality is never compromised.

business tips FOR BARBERS
AS WE TRAVEL THE WORLD VISITING BARBERSHOPS WE SEE MANY BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES THAT COULD BE IMPLEMENTED QUICKLY TO MAKE MORE PROFIT FOR THE BUSINESS. HERE IS A QUICK LIST OF SOLUTIONS WE HAVE TAKEN NOTE OF THAT YOU CAN INSTIGATE QUICKLY.
Number One
Number Three
Learn and practice customer service skills, as barbershops are now attracting younger barbers who sometimes are not polished well in their customer service approaches. The old school traditional Barber was well honed in his interpersonal skills and his charismatic charm would keep the regular coming back on a fortnightly cycle. Many stores in the USA now employ a frontof-house concierge to take bookings, payments and provide hospitality to waiting customers. Training in customer service is not just advisable; it’s essential to increase profitability for the business. The barbershop is about making men feel good about themselves internally and externally.
Does your barbershop have a good first aid kit? Barbers operate with sharp tools every day, so having a good collection of bandages and band-aid types is a must in your shop. Annual first aid classes should be compulsory for all the barbers in your business. Good first aid knowledge can help divert a serious accident that may occur. Yes, please have the rubber gloves on hand for those unplanned blood spills.
Number Two Technology in the modern barbershop should incorporate a point of sale system that has the ability to talk to and integrate with the back end financial accounting package. Most young barbers I meet have not got the time to do paperwork through their heavy social lives, so a system built to save time is a compulsory component to the business. Cloud base accounting systems like Xero are also a time saver for a small business operator. I like Xero because it has lots of plugins like payroll, and retail solutions.
42
Number Four A skill of selling is teachable; barbers are not just barbers, they are also salespeople. As a client can sit in a barber chair for 30 minutes, while completely trusting you as you wave those sharp objects around their face, ears and eyes, a suggestive sale on a product is a good option for discussion during this process. Female hairdressers are experts in this practice, o en doubling the sales revenue. Merchandising a product in the barbershop is also a great idea. Remove those skateboards and skulls and put up a rack full of grooming products for sale!
Number Five Be contactable with your business information on all platforms. Signage, business cards, websites, social media platforms. Many business websites and social media sites we look at don’t have phone numbers! Yes, people still do ring each other on that smart camera thing in your pocket. The phone function still works! Remember an incoming call is money in business.

CEO australian hairdressing council
INDUSTRY UPDATE…
WHERE IS EVERYONE?
WHAT DOES EMPLOYMENT LOOK LIKE?
One of the roles and objectives of the Australian Hairdressing Council is to represent the hairdressing industry to Government. Unfortunately, the Government does not separate the hairdressing, beauty or barber industries. Statistics and information for all 3 trades come under 1 banner. For the purpose of this article I will refer to all 3 stakeholders as The Industry and separate reports where I can.
In 2017 the ATO recorded 91,000 ABNs registered in The Industry. Of these only 29,412 are shopfronts. Over 58,000 ABNs have the same home address as their business address. Allowing for dormant ABNs the ATO note that 54,582 ABNs are not registered for GST. These ABNs would show a turnover of less than $75,000. The average wage showing for The Industry is $32,000. This is a real concern as the ATO and the Treasury recognises The Industry is an 18% risk contributing to the $25 Billion Black Economy.
The Australian economy reports under unemployment with one third of employees being hired as casuals or part time. This is the same for The Industry. The FWO reports over 7,000 complaints, finding Hair, Beauty and Barber operators to be one of the service industries using “contract” based employment models to exploit workers and avoid paying industry standard Award rates and entitlements.
HOW DOES THE INDUSTRY PERFORM? The Industry was worth a total of $4.9 billion in 2017. The Barber industry represented 6%. Hairdressing 65%. Nail salons or nail services 9.8%. Other beauty services 19.2% The most profitable businesses are based in Victoria.
The break down of Industry businesses in Australia is WA 10%, SA 7.1%, NT .07%, QLD 19.4%, NSW 34.7%, ACT 1.7%, VIC 24.6%, TAS 1.8% The only State that is showing growth is WA. All other States are saturated with macro businesses.
44
It may be worth noting that all business owners who engage contractors are still liable for any litigation concerning treatment risks. It is advisable that treatment risk is covered by the company as well as the contractor. Overall, The Industry employs over 84,000.
HOW ARE APPRENTICESHIPS LOOKING? In 2017 there were 8,300 training in apprenticeships in Hairdressing and Barbering. Although it is too early to attain complete records we do know that in APRIL 2017, NSW recorded 1,700 apprenticeships in Hairdressing and 45 Barber apprentices. By June 30th 2017, records show NSW with 2,158 Hairdressing Apprenticeships and 78 Barber Apprentices. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE BARBER QUALIFICATION? The Barber qualification was not available for 31 years. Now that it is available and being delivered in our TAFE and private colleges the AHC really does need to hear your feedback. The AHC are consulted with on the IRC and the IAC. These committees are Industry Reference Committees who overview and give feedback on the training pages. These training packages include the Barber Industry and this year we will commence reviewing what is being taught in your industry.
WHAT’S THE AHC UP TO FOR 2018? The AHC will be presenting 2 national Roadshows this year to help business owners plus assist in the wellbeing of employees. The Heads Up tour commences in February in Newcastle and will follow then in Canberra, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Darwin, Sydney, Hobart and Adelaide. The reason for this roadshow is listening to the concerns of owning a business, the stress and angst coping, cash flow, staff, clients and paperwork. The AHC saw the need to help business owners with tools to better manage themselves and their staff.
If you’d like to give feedback on what’s working and what is not working please forward to ceo@theahc.org.au and I will put your feedback forward to the Committee members.
Heads Up is in 3 sessions. Two sessions are for the business owner/manager followed by 1 session for staff. If you would like more information call the AHC office on 02 4929 6098 or go to this link: www.theahc.org.au/events Our 2nd Roadshow is a 2 day course on mental wellness. It seems that nowadays everyone knows someone, or works with someone who suffers from anxiety or depression. This 2 day course will give attendees a deeper comprehension of common mental health illnesses. Our AHC Industry Day will be held in Melbourne on Friday 8th June. This all day event will have many speakers from the Industry and Government addressing training and education. If you want to have a say in the future of your industry then this is the event to be present at! On Sunday 10th June the AHC will present “Listening for a Change”. 70% of our qualified professionals leave the industry. We want to discover why, and how we can change to attract more staff, retain staff and grow The Industry. For any information or feedback please contact Sandy Chong at ceo@theahc.org.au

THE MAKING OF A LEGEND s with all good ideas, this one started in the shower. As I grabbed that same tired bottle of men’s drugstore body wash, and poured that neon blue liquid into my hand it hit me. Why am I using a $4 body wash that has more chemicals and words that I can pronounce?

Building a shop.
SO YOU WANT TO OPEN YOUR OWN SHOP AND BE YOUR OWN BOSS?! IT’S THE DREAM OF SOME OF US TO OPEN OUR OWN SHOP, BUT VERY FEW REALLY KNOW WHAT IT TAKES TO DO THIS.

er 27 years in this industry, building and operating six shops, I have learnt some tips and tricks to make this an easier and achievable goal.

family - unless of course you have unlimited funds, and if that’s the case, just buy someone else’s shop and rename it hahaha. Draw up a project calendar showing trades and time frames for works. Stick this somewhere visible onsite. This is not only good for you to know where you’re up to daily but most importantly makes your tradies accountable, knowing you have an opening date. While the build is happening, its time to get everything else sorted. Pick a name and register it. Tip* Check your business name against the IP Australia website for Trademark infringements. This can avoid unnecessary hassles down the line. Once you have a name, setup your social media and register your location through various online search engines such as Foursquare and Truelocal. These are older platforms but Google searches them for information which helps create your web presence. This can take a while to index so the sooner you exist, the sooner customers find you online. Instagram and Facebook are great ideas for sharing your pictorial build journey and will help you grab momentum for opening, so take plenty
of pics. If longevity is your desired result, start your business with a so ware pos system that captures client details and helps you build a marketing database from day one. There are online providers, such as Simple Salon, out there offering packages from $99 a month. Furniture and fitout is your image so give this some good attention. Create Pinterest mood boards for each area of your shop, saving everything that takes your fancy. The interior designer’s tool of choice. Shopping, as necessary as it is, also burns up a lot of time. I tend to tour all the Salvo’s and Vinnies looking for trinkets to decorate and spend many a night cruising Ebay for the same. The online world of shopping is great for all your sundry items such as towel warmers, towels and office needs, giving you more time to concentrate on your fitout. Now chairs are always a bone of contention. Do you get old ones for a cool look or new ones for ease of use. Personally I have done both and nowadays will always go for new, simply so I can re-order them if I expand to more shops plus the comfort factor. Remember your customers butt!! Old ones can be a bit clunky and expensive to restore and repair. New ones are flooding the market at 51
affordable prices and delivered straight to your door So you’re nearly there. Get your stock ordered ready for open, allowing a couple of weeks for account setup and order delivery. Choose your products wisely and for start up, always work with strong product lines to increase your marketing reach. Most companies will have good opening deals but don’t be shy to ask for some extra bits. Capes, displays etc etc as it's in their best interest that you do well too. Staff…well that’s another beast and best le for another topical piece. In closing, I’m a big believer that, although times have changed, someone else has dealt with the same things you have and no doubt written about it. Old sayings like ‘failing to plan is planning to fail’ come to mind, and it’s hard enough out there in business. Do it right and don’t accept shortcuts. Hope I’ve helped some of you here with some useful tips but I’m leaving the best and most important till last… BACK YOURSELF!

SLIKR IS AN AUSTRALIAN APP WORKING CLOSELY WITH LOCAL BARBERSHOPS TO CREATE THE LATEST IN ‘ON DEMAND’ TECHNOLOGY.
W
ith 72% of men searching for a service on the same day, barbers o en have long wait times.
Shella Thornton is an award-winning Barber and owner of Clippy T’s, a chain of three barbershops in Brisbane, who have all implemented SLIKR to improve customer experience. “We have had a great response with how much free time clients have instead of waiting in the shop” said Ms Thornton. The SLIKR app is designed for walk-in barbers and can reduce shop wait times by an average of 60% by smoothing the arrival of clients. Smoothing helps reduce walk-outs and walk-past clients, making the shop more effective and increasing client satisfaction. However, founder & CEO Duane Thompson is adamant it is “not just another booking app”. The Kiosk automates client check-in, so the shop does not need additional staff, then uses SMS and Mobile apps to allow clients to track their place in the queue in real time. Many barbershops make use of minimal technology, with a majority of walk-in businesses having no client details or management, only 25% using point of sale so ware and limited websites. SLIKR set out to help address all these points for owners.
The Kiosk prompts clients for contact details, a er 3 - 4 visits over 70% of clients are leaving contact information, allowing each shop to build up a profile and contact data for their clients. SLIKR automates collecting feedback, reminders and notifications for clients. An online presence is essential and by connecting with your social media, clients have more reason to visit and engage with your page. If you do not have a website, your unique SLIKR web link can connect via google to secure clients searching your local area and checking into your shop.
A free PAYG model for owners is another key feature to SLIKR with a flexible usage-based pricing model. In many shops an app is seen as a cost overhead that benefits the client, not the shop owner. Mr Thompson says “SLIKR works closely with the barber industry, we are prepared to share the risk and benefit, we only succeed if you succeed”. SLIKR has the option to pass on a small booking fee only to clients who choose to “Queue Ahead” via the app. The Queue is clearly displayed on the Kiosk, so all clients know their place and there are no arguments over who is next or confusion over who is waiting for what barber.
SLIKR’s most recent release even combines bookings and a mini-POS Checkout function. The ability to combine bookings has come from shops where a higher percentage of clients wanted to queue ahead, or a particular barber was very popular. It is a natural progression for some owners and allows the system to adapt to the shop or client demands.
SLIKR is now in shops across Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, New Zealand and London. If you thought you knew about the latest in barber systems, think again and book a 'no obligation' demo today.
“Customers have adapted well and love the fact that they can see if their Barber is working plus there is no embarrassing moment asking for their favourite,” said Ms Thornton.

The students’ initiative has evolved into a wonderful partnership between Foster House and TAFE NSW Barbering. Initially operating out of an unused storage space, the students started out providing a barbering service using their own equipment including brooms and mirrors. Now “Foster Fadez” as it is known, has been converted into a fitted out pop up Barber Shop, open every Thursday from 1.00 – 4.30, where barbering
students go to give back to the community, 'while also refining their skills,'supervised by TAFE NSW teaching staff.

Student Rachel Jones, who took the lead with this says: “I feel privileged to have had this opportunity so early on in my career.” This has been a win-win for both the residents and the students and opened up a pathway for the next intake of students to continue this great community initiative.

DAN KURZROCK AND JORDAN SCHWARTZ FEATURED ON THE FORBES 30 UNDER 30 LIST FOR 2018 FOR THEIR INNOVATIVE USE OF SPENT GRAIN FROM BREWING BEER.
FURTHER RESEARCH CONFIRMED OUR SUSPICIONS THAT BEER G R A I N H A S I N C R E D I B L E N U T R I TI O N A L VA L U E . TH E S U G A R H A D GONE INTO OUR FAVORITE DRINK LEAVING BEHIND PROTEIN, FIBER, AND A WHOLE BUNCH OF MICRONUTRIENTS.
uring our undergrad at UCLA, we found the perfect loophole to the legal drinking age: brewing our own beer. We started homebrewing and quickly discovered that beer was not the only delicious product of the brewing process… Each batch also created food that looked, smelled, and tasted like hot cereal. We were hauling this grain out to the dumpster until we read about other homebrewers baking bread with it. We started baking and selling bread with the modest goal of making enough money to
D
brew beer for free. We soon realized the possibilities of this idea were much bigger than a few loaves of bread harvesting and upcycling this grain could create a massive potential food source. Further research confirmed our suspicions that beer grain has incredible nutritional value. The sugar had gone into our favorite drink - leaving behind protein, fiber, and a whole bunch of micronutrients. We decided that a granola bar would be the ideal pilot use of this ingredient - the first ReGrained bar was baked in 2013. 59
Today, as we harvest this ingredient at scale, we mill it into SuperGrain+ flour. This nutrientdense flour is the base ingredient of all delicious ReGrained snacks. The SuperGrain+ Bar has evolved with us, both in taste and purpose. These bars now feature inherently functional ingredients, so they’re as good for you as they are for the planet. But we’re not stopping at bars. SuperGrain+ flour is as versatile as it is delicious. Savory to sweet - the possibilities are seemingly endless. Join the ReGrained Revolution to see what’s next!

Thor Ragnarok Geostorm
O U T N O W O N D V D / B L U - R AY AND STREAMING
Due to global warming and the human race pretty much driving the planet to shit, the tables finally turn and mother earth starts to strike back with earthquakes, hurricanes, tidal waves etc, so a scientist (Gerard Butler in the role, quite frankly the most unlikely scientist ever) creates a space station that somehow controls storms. Sounds like it has premise? It doesn’t, utter tosh. Gerard is rubbish at the best of times, but this is an absolute turkey of a movie. Crass one liners, ridiculous plot, total over acting, steer well clear of this disaster of a movie.
The Verdict: shit storm! .

Episode 3 in Marvel’s Thor series. Thor teams up with Loki and The Hulk to battle a threat to Asgard. I am a marvel kid through and through, and most diehard marvel fans would call me a spectator when I say that Guardians of the Galaxy is my favourite in the Marvel Universe. Thor Ragnarok, is like a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, but without the Guardians. It is a truly great addition to the Universe, and much more entertaining than previous Thor films. It’s colourful, has a killer soundtrack, amazing new characters, and a story that fits in line with our marvel favourite. It also lines up nicely for the Avengers infinity war movie.
The Verdict: Thor TopRok see this ASAP

WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE
Well what can I say? I wanted to hate this, what with my passion for disliking remakes of classics from my childhood, but I just couldn’t. I used to think that the Rock was ridiculous in all films, but over recent years (Baywatch, and HBO’s Ballers) he has evolved as an actor, has really learned to take the piss out of himself and he does it perfectly in this movie. Lots of laughs, and a pretty good story. Welcome to the Jungle sticks to the premise of the original story whilst giving it an upgrade. Kids and parents will love it, it’s just a great fun, easy to watch movie.
The Verdict: Well reshaped visit to the Jumanji jungle

movie review
I, Tonya A white trash Portland, Oregon girl whose dream it is to ice skate professionally and will do WHATEVER it takes. Never have I been so in awe and impressed by a character in a true story that I have never heard of. Tonya Harding is famous for a scandal during the 1994 Olympics, and this story is about her. The way this true story is brought to life through a series of interviews with all the involved parties, is brilliant. Margot Robbie is outstanding as always in her portrayal of the title role and deserves her Academy Award nomination for best actress. The story, no matter how true, is hilarious and quite unbelievable. Get to see this as soon as possible, you won’t be disappointed.
Some skier that you’ve never heard of sets up an illegal gambling (poker) ring gets busted, blah blah blah. The critics love this, I am not one of these critics. It’s boring as f@ck and like watching paint dry, with a dull monotone narrative throughout.
The Verdict: I, Totally Recommend.
The Verdict: Molly's Shite
Molly's Game
The Shape of Water Guillermo Del Toro’s latest outing is a beautiful whimsical love story with a difference. Deaf cleaner of seedy government building meets fish man that seedy government guys have been experimenting on. It’s your typical story of deaf cleaner, meets fish man, falls in love with fish man, helps him escape, has sex type affair (don’t ask). Sounds weird? It is, but it works. It’s beautiful, it's magical, you fall for the main character immediately and Sally Hawkins is mesmerising in the mute cleaner role, she deserves an award. Reddit was flaring up not so long ago, is the Fish Man the same as Abe from Hellboy series (also directed by Del Toro)? You can see the similarities, and the guy in the suit is played by the same actor. Due to film rights, studio changes etc, it’s rumoured that Guillermo wasn’t able to make the prequel or back story for Abe, so he made this. Interesting theory. Could the main characters be related to Abe in some way? Fish food for thought. Anywho, I was very pleasantly surprised by this film, it’s a winner.
The Verdict: Well Shaped Water
Blade Runner 2049 WATCH THIS IF YOU WATCH ONE FILM THIS MONTH...
30 years on from Ridley Scott’s original Blade Runner film, Dennis Villeneuve takes us back to a dark and grim future of replicants and blade runners. Every bone in my body wanted to dislike this, I really don’t like 30 years between sequels, I am not a fan of Ryan Gosling, and I was worried that Scott’s world wouldn’t fit in another directors imagination. I was wrong, in every way. This is my favourite film of 2017, I’m a huge Star Wars fan, so for me to say that is a big, big deal. I have now seen this film 8 times, it's beautiful, the story, the look, it somehow makes an almost exact copy of the world we were introduced to in the original film, but it makes it feel 30 years later. Ryan Gosling fits, Harrison Ford fits, the story fits, the CGI fits.. it’s simply a perfect transition for the Blade Runner series, and I hope for more. To say that Ridley Scott was really happy with this in someone else's hands is a huge compliment for Villeneuve, as let’s face it, Ridley Scott is normally a mardy bastard about everything.
The Verdict: Beaut Runner

The Last Jedi The second chapter in Disney’s Star Wars reboot. The First Order chase the Rebels across the Galaxy far, far away, whilst Rey tries to convince a stubborn and faithless Luke Skywalker to join the fight. I was worried about this movie when I heard that Rhian Johnson was taking the helm. I’m a big fan of Johnson’s earlier work. If you haven’t seen Brick, you should certainly check it out, and his Sci-Fi offering Looper…. But, was he the correct choice for Star Wars? In all honesty I’m not entirely sure. I loved the film, I thought the pace, even though long, was perfect, the action was great from the outset, and the evolution of the new main characters was very well presented. The thing I had a problem with were weird quips, Rhianesque jokes throughout had no place in the Star Wars universe. I don’t want to see Luke winking at 3PO, I don’t want our heroes having comical moments in a cantina-like space battle. What can be said for Johnson is, he knows his Star Wars. I consider myself a mid-level Star Wars geek, and there is stuff in this movie that only the die hard fans will understand. All in all, it’s a great adventure, and most fans will love it, and newcomers alike. There are moments of greatness, and moments of pure pointlessness, the silly quips just spoil it a little.
The Verdict: The Last, not the Best, but certainly very good Jedi

APP
THE B4 APP, IS BEING TOUTED AS “TINDER” FOR REAL ESTATE, & IS SET TO BE THE BIGGEST SHIFT THE PROPERTY INDUSTRY HAS SEEN SINCE THE ADVENT OF THE INTERNET.
ustralian based tech maverick, Drew Davison and his property app B4 are putting the big players in real estate tech on notice with a simple yet innovative idea born on a lazy Sunday morning. The B4 app, is free to download on the App store and Google Play and is being touted as “tinder” for real estate. It is set to be the biggest shi the property industry has seen since the advent of the internet. We caught up with Drew, the founder CEO and man behind B4. Drew shares an interesting story of a lazy Sunday that begins sprawled out on a sunny Queensland beach and ends up with him locked in a hotel room with Google. The real light bulb moment came in the form of a Facebook alert. A friend and real estate colleague of Drew’s posted a short description of a property he had just signed up for sale. The undertone expressed that this property would be ‘coming soon’, meaning in a week or so when the professional photos, floor plans, advertising blurbs, print material and online insertions had been done.
A
He was essentially marketing the latest property for sale before uploading to websites, but his audience was only family, friends and followers. It was at that point that Drew, a veteran real estate agent himself, who knew far too well the challenges of connecting property to people, saw a way to apply what his friend was doing - but on a much larger scale. In his brightly coloured board shorts, Drew spent the rest of his Sunday locked in the hotel room wrangling internet tabs, registration portals and domain names. Drew saw that other mediums for listing real estate and connecting agents with people were slow, costly and seemingly had a monopoly over the industry, limiting the free flow of communication and information. So it was at that moment on a sunny beach that the light bulb went off and [B4]realestate.com.au was born. “People are sick of trawling real estate websites for hours on end hoping to find ‘the one’ only to discover the property is already gone,” Drew said. “The reality is that agents (& their clients) last year paid over $920 million to 65
just TWO of the major real estate websites. Essentially the agents & public are being ripped off.” Drew said. Of the competitors who are currently not servicing Australia’s real estate community fairly, he has this to say: “The prices of marketing rise and their profits soar. The enormous profits should be embarrassing. It’s an obvious sign of overcharging and excess yield from third party advertising, which we as home sellers & buyers ultimately end up paying for. No wonder the Australian agents and public are crying out for change, it’s just not fair!” B4 has re-written the rules of property marketing, transforming the buying, renting and marketing property into an instant, simple and efficient process, streamlining the exchange and reducing the likelihood of unnecessary and high advertising costs. As an agent, property manager, a buyer, a renter or just a curious person looking to jump into the market, start your relationship with B4 now. .............................................................................. OUR MISSION IS SIMPLE “HAVE POLLUTION FREE OCEANS FOR OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS” IF WE ALL WORK TOGETHER, WE CAN ACHIEVE THIS!
{ H O W D I D I T S TA R T ? }
It all started from a passion for the oceans and the hard realisation that human over consumption and waste mismanagement was killing nature’s best jewel, which also happen to regulate our world’s operation to an extent we are only starting to understand. This is why, Andrew Turton and Pete Ceglinski, two avid surfers, decided to quit their jobs to create a “Seabin” that would collect trash, oil, fuel and detergents. The Seabin Project is far more than a product, our ultimate goal is to “have pollution free oceans for our future generations”. To get there we are working to make the Seabin better and better and available to the maximum number of places. Also, educating and raising awareness to be able to one day live in a world where pollution devices are not needed.

I grew up in the Byron Shire, Northern NSW. I have a twin brother and a younger brother, Mum and Dad all still live in the Byron Shire where we now reside. I am 40 this August and starting a small family with my soulmate Sascha, I'm pretty much ticking all the boxes needed to finally becoming an adult. From as soon as I could walk I have been in the ocean. My first career was as a Product Designer, I was responsible for designing toasters, kettles, medical equipment and childrens toys using plastic injection moulding made in China. A lot of the stuff I designed was not designed for a long shelf life and most of the items were not really needed. I quit this job and headed off around the world where I landed a job as a boat builder in Italy for an Americas Cup racing team. For 11 years I had been roaming the globe with a surfboard and a bag of tools working in some amazing places with a disposable income. Fast forward to today I now have a startup business that started from crowdfunding capital. We now have a European office with 5 team members and I am back in the Byron Shire to start a family and set up Seabin Australia global HQ. We do not have a sustainable income right now as the sales and distribution network is happening as we speak, but the team and I are stoked because we are cleaning debris out of the oceans, a fulfilling and rewarding challenge, plus I can now get a wave in before work!
t i p s FOR M ANK I ND Be kind to others. A lot of doors open up with a smile and a kind word or two.

Take responsibility for your own actions, do not blame others or wait for action. Real change starts with yourself. For example, If we all start to refuse plastic straws, who is going to manufacture something they cannot sell? If you see any litter, please pick it up. That one small action may make a big difference to something or someone somewhere.

Checking
testicles
YOU SHOULD AIM TO PERFORM TSE ABOUT ONCE EVERY FOUR WEEKS OR SO. CHOOSE A DAY THAT’S EASY TO REMEMBER, LIKE THE FIRST DAY OF
U S ING T E STI C U L A R SEL F EXAMI NATI ON
EVERY CALENDAR MONTH.
RISKS OF TESTICULAR CANCER All men should check their testicles regularly to become familiar with the usual feel of their testicles, so that they know when there is a change. Men who have a history of undescended testicles at birth, or men who are infertile, are at greater risk of testicular cancer. These men should be vigilant and regularly examine their testicles for unusual lumps or swellings. Checking your testicles using testicular selfexamination TSE only takes a minute. You should aim to perform TSE about once every four weeks or so. Choose a day that’s easy to remember, like the first day of every calendar month. If you have been treated for testicular cancer, you should still examine your remaining testicle because you have a one in 25 chance of developing cancer in this testicle also. See your doctor for further information or instruction on TSE, and for prompt diagnosis of any testicular lumps or swellings. TESTICLE ANATOMY The anatomy of the testicle includes:
• Testicle (or testis) - small, oval-shaped sex gland that produces sex hormones and sperm • Epididymis - a series of small tubes attached to the back of the testicle that collect and store sperm. The epididymis connects to a larger tube called the vas deferens • Scrotum - the skin sac that houses the testicles. Sperm production needs a temperature around 20C lower than the body, which is why the testicles are located outside the body in the scrotum.
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN PERFORMING TESTICULAR SELF EXAMINATION Become familiar with the look, feel and shape of your testicles; this will help you notice any abnormalities. The characteristics of healthy testicles include: • Each testicle feels like a smooth, firm egg.
• Check one testicle first, then the other. • Gently roll one testicle using the fingers and thumbs of both hands. • Feel along the underside of the scrotum to find the epididymis that sits at the back of the testicle. It should feel like a little bunch of tightly curled tubes. • Perform TSE on the other testicle.
• Adult testicles range in size from about 15 mL (similar to a bird egg) to 35 mL (similar to a small chicken egg).
TSE shouldn’t be painful or uncomfortable. If you’re experiencing any discomfort, try to be more gentle.
• One testicle may be slightly larger than the other.
Symptoms of testicular cancer include a testicular lump that is usually painless (about one in 10 are painful), a sensation of heaviness in the scrotum, and a persistent ache in the affected testicle.
• Commonly, one testicle hangs lower than the other. • There should be no pain or discomfort when the testicles and scrotum are handled gently. HOW TO PERFORM TESTICULAR SELF EXAMINATION Generally, the TSE procedure includes: • Make sure your scrotum is warm and relaxed. You may like to perform TSE a er showering or bathing. • It may help to do TSE in front of the mirror, so you can see as well as feel what you’re doing.
68
YOU SHOULD TAKE NOTICE OF ANYTHING UNUSUAL, SUCH AS: • A lump or swelling in or on the testicle itself • Change in testicular size • Change in testicular shape • Change in the consistency or feel of the testicle.

IF YOU’RE ACQUAINTED WITH UPPERCUT DELUXE THEN CHANCES ARE YOU’VE SEEN PAT CAPOCCI IN HIS LIFESTYLE AMBASSADOR ROLE FOR THE BRAND AND NOW OWNER OF THE FLYING TIGER BARBERSHOP ON SYDNEY’S NORTHERN BEACHES.
P
at Capocci is undoubtedly one of the best things to happen to Rockabilly music in recent years and he’s ready to deliver a tasty blend of modern blues, western swing, jazz, country and blues fusion at Port Macquarie’s Howling Moon Blues Festival on the Queens Birthday long weekend, Sunday June 10, 2018. Hard work and relentless determination are just two characteristics that can be attributed to Pat Capocci who has emerged as one of Australia’s most respected practitioners of Rockabilly and Roots music. His unique style, natural ability and a decade of work travelling up and down highways and jet-setting around the world, has paid off. Pat Capocci is a place where culture collides, people discover him not only through music, but through fashion and hair. See he doesn’t only write music, but he cuts hair combining his love of a bygone era in his fashion, workplace and music. If you’re acquainted with Uppercut Deluxe then chances are you’ve seen Pat Capocci in his Lifestyle Ambassador role for the brand and
now owner of the Flying Tiger Barbershop on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. He’s a wailer and guitar slinger extraordinaire with his early records like Call Of The Wild and Delinquent Beat being pretty straight-down-the-line rockabilly. His latest release, Pantherburn Stomp is a rumbling, dirty-edged mix of rockabilly, old-school R&B and rock’n’roll with some ’60s garage rock thrown in for good measure. Performing as a three-piece, the Rockabilly and Roots band are known to transport audiences back to a 1950’s jive club with their music, their sharp as a tack, classic haircuts and smart attire work in well with Pat’s unique style and charisma. His natural song writing ability has seen the combo transcend the typical novelty of the genre. Pat’s writing style blends a unique feel of western swing, jazz, country and blues, and in the same way that all iconic artists have, Pat has used the genre as a launching pad, deepening and broadening the integrity and timelessness of the music. Growing up in the Maitland-Hunter region of New South Wales, Pat spent his early years listening to and being 71
influenced by traditional roots music of yesteryear. At age sixteen Pat became a member of the Hunter’s very own Johnny Greens Blues Cowboys as well as the Torpedoes and began performing at local pubs and hotels. Pat had a taste of live performance and decided to venture out and form his own band. With appearances at Viva Las Vegas, Rockabilly Rave, The Hot Rod Hayride, Screaming Festival and the Waldorf Weekender, the international rockin’ scene is no stranger to the combo. Pat has also played alongside some of the finest and most respected international artists including Deke Dickerson, Big Sandy, Imelda May and Justin Townes Earle plus many more. Pat’s energetic fusion of guitar greats such as Charlie Christian, Johnny Guitar Watson, Merle Travis, Django Reinhardt, and Grady Martin, paired with great passion and determination, show exactly why Pat is regarded as one of Australia’s best modern practitioners of Rockabilly music.
