Uhlenkamp said the system-wide pay increase was appropriate despite individual universities increasing costs.

“The three percent pay increase is fair and competitive compensation,” Uhlenkamp said.

He said university tuition and executive compensation are two separate issues.

Hirshman makes more than the average University of California chancellor. In the UC system, chancellors head the individual UC schools and on average make $312,000, according to the University of California website.

The CSU system has not increased tuition for students since 2011. However, SDSU students have seen an increase in fees in the past 10 years, including the Student Success Fee. The CSU Board of Trustees does not have influence on the implementation of university-specific financial decisions such as the Student Success Fee, but the CSU Chancellor is required to approve them.

Uhlenkamp said the system must provide competitive salaries to attract highly skilled administrators and said executives haven’t received a salary increase since 2007.

“We want to have the very best people in place at our universities,” he said.

Hirshman was hired in 2011 and started with an unprecedented $350,000 annual salary. Supplemental compensation brings the total to $400,000.

At the time, the salary was a $100,000 more than Hirshman’s predecessor, Stephen L. Weber, who was compensated $299,435 annually as of 2011, according to the CSU’s website.

Gov. Jerry Brown objected to Hirshman’s starting salary. Brown wrote a letter to the CSU Board of Trustees Chairman that condemned high levels of compensation for CSU executives.

Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom also voiced his concerns over excessive CSU executive compensation at the time.

SDSU spokeswoman Beth Chee said Hirshman’s salary increase is a decision made at the CSU level and said it “is not appropriate” for the university to comment.

The Campanile Foundation, the organization that provides Hirshman’s $50,000 supplemental compensation, also declined to comment.

San Diego State President Elliot Hirshman’s compensation will increase to $412,000 after the California State University Board of Trustees approved a 3 percent salary increase for CSU executives.

Hirshman’s salary is currently set at $400,000, which includes a $50,000 supplement from the Campanile Foundation. Housing and a $1,000 annual car allowance is also provided

for the president.

These numbers make Hirshman the highest-paid university president in the CSU system. He is the second-highest compensated CSU executive after CSU Chancellor Timothy White, who makes $410,000 with a $30,000 supplement and housing expenses.

This pay increase comes the same year as the implementation of the Student Success Fee. The then-proposed fee sparked student-lead protests during the grand dedication of the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union last spring.

A.S. votes to reject mascot resolution Colleen Larson staff writer _____________________________________ The Associated Students University Council voted to 25-1 to reject the resolution to change the mascot at its meeting on Nov. 19. There were three abstentions. Approximately 20 students, including the resolution’s authors, showed up to the Council Chambers to witness the vote.

Several public speakers acknowledged that the vote to change the mascot would probably be turned down, but still urged the council to consider its opinions.

“You should vote to change the mascot because it is discriminatory and racist,” international security and conflict resolution junior Sierra Marcelius said. “If we change the mascot we will be seen as a leader on a national scale.”

Other speakers took a more aggressive approach in urging the council to change the mascot.

“I am here to tell you, as a group of mainly white people, and maybe some tokenized people of color, this land belongs to a group of people who faced genocide,” alumnus Nadir Bouhmouch said. “How can a people of such privilege make this decision? I don’t believe a group of white people is going to get together and decide if something is racist for a group of people

English freshman Camille Tiberghien was the only public speaker that encouraged the council to vote to reject the resolution to change the Aztec Warrior mascot.

Before voting, UC representatives also commented on the resolution.

UC representatives said financial reasons, such as rebranding costs, was the main reason their individual colleges voted against the resolution. Other representatives said that the mascot celebrated the Aztec culture.

The Board of Directors will have to approve the UC’s vote before the result is final and the resolution process ends.

A.S. Vice President of University Affairs Corey Polant said the board will continue to discuss ways in which the campus can represent the Aztec Warrior mascot in non-racist ways.

The A.S. University Affairs Board previously researched different aspects of the mascot and voted to reject the resolution as a recommendation to the UC. The Queer People of Color Collective proposed the resolution on Oct. 2, saying in the document that the name “Aztec” and the Aztec Warrior mascot “perpetuates harmful stereotypes of Native Americans.”

Advocates, school counselors and superintendents from 32 states as well as White House officials met to create plans for school counselors and related parties that will work to improve higher education opportunities for students.

First Lady Michelle Obama greeted the attendees Monday morning in a personalized welcome message addressing the audience and thanking SDSU for hosting the convening in conjunction with the Reach Higher Initiative.

“Like all of you, I believe that nothing is more important for a young person’s country and the future of our country than getting a good education,” Obama said in the video. “In today’s world that means going beyond high school to a community college, a four-year university or professional training program. I know that if we truly want to support our young people to reach their college dreams, we need to support our school counselors.”

The first day of the convening focused on creating action plans and collaboration as well as an emphasis on use of data to

understand how school counselors can improve their interactions with students and what they are doing well.

In the afternoon, the room was filled with excitement and collaboration as attendees set up a “marketplace,” proposing topics for discussion by taping the desired topics on a wall inside Montezuma Hall. Individuals, whether they were experts on the topics or not, met for discussion of the specified topic by congregating at tables dedicated to the ideas.

Joyce Brown, a retired district counseling director from Illinois, said the convening this week was a historic moment for counselors that would allow the profession to be strengthened.

“I’m retired, but I’m not tired,” Brown said. “I’m running hard and I won’t

He added that one counselor can’t meet the needs of 600 students.

“Having a lot of the key constituents at the same table was very important,” Joey Nunez Estrada Jr., assistant professor of SDSU’s School Counseling Program, said.

Nola Butler-Byrd, chair of SDSU’s Department of Counseling and School Psychology, said the biggest payoff of the convening was that it showcased the value of school counselors.

Throughout the two-day event, attendees broke up into work groups to work on commitments to ensure success for students and counselors.

“The biggest thing is to keep the movement going to reach our initiatives … staying committed to reach outcomes,” Nuñez Estrada said.

Director of SDSU’s School Counseling Program Trish Hatch ended day two, alongside Assistant Professor for the program Laura Owen, with a message to First Lady Michelle Obama.

“Thank you for believing in school counselors,” Hatch said, visibly overwhelmed with happiness. “Thank you for trusting that school counselors will help serve the students.”

Late times taxi in choices The current San Diego MTS timetable and expensive car services contribute to a lack of options and unsafe driving practices.

t’s a Saturday night and a San Diego State student decides to mosey on over to downtown San Diego, where he or she will remain until 2 a.m. Due to ridiculously expensive parking prices, taking the trolley or the bus seems like a rational alternative. However, when it comes time to head back home, all public transportations have shut down for the night leaving the student with either the expense of cab fares and Uber, or the dangers surrounding drunk driving.

Generally speaking, the latest MTS vehicles run no later than approximately 2 a.m., but that’s when they’re heading back to San Diego. So depending on where people live, chances are most will have to leave well before last call.

In desperate times when intoxicated individuals don’t feel like taking a cab or getting price gouged by Lyft and Uber are going to get behind the wheel. To ensure the safety of the community, MTS needs to operate 24 hours — at least for nights on the weekend.

The SDSU Police Department has already arrested 37 people this year for driving under the influence, but that’s minuscule compared to the rest of the city. In 2011, there were more than 15,000 DUI-related arrests in San Diego County, making it the third highest in

California. To make matters worse, the average person will drive drunk 80 times before an arrest is made, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Clearly, drunk drivers aren’t a rarity, so I’d expect San Diego to take action by making public transportation more accessible to avoid the risk of drunk drivers.

Not only are drunk drivers endangering themselves, they’re putting lives of others in their clumsy hands as well. Society needs to continue educating people about the dangers of drunk driving, while the justice system

IN 2011, THERE WERE MORE THAN 15,000 DUIRELATED ARRESTS IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY... continues to punish those who break the law. But providing them with the proper resources is a necessary step to add to each of these efforts.

It’d be naive to think this problem can be solved overnight, but providing potential drunk drivers the alternative option of affordable late-night transportation is crucial. Expensive transportation options, such as taxis, Uber and Lyft only encourage more people to drive drunk. At the end of a night out, one can take the trolley or the bus to, and from his or her bars of choice. Wait times might be longer at the

dead of night, but that’s a significantly better option than driving under the influence and risking lives.

According to a study from the National Bureau of Economic Research, when Washington, D.C. extended its metro service by three hours, the city reduced the probability of a DUI-related arrest by approximately 14 percent. As a result, alcohol-related crimes increased by roughly 5.4 percent, but a drunk being a public nuisance is less harmful than driving a two-ton vehicle at high speeds.

MTS covers a lot of ground with the abundance of trollies and buses all throughout San Diego. Referring back to the same study, the effect dissipates the farther away the alcohol vendor is from a metro station. Therefore, the combination of the bus routes and trolley lines offered in San Diego should reduce the amount of drunk drivers and DUI-related arrests.

Extended hours would not only more convenient for everyone using public transportation but it also creates a heightened sense of safety among individuals who drive late at night. This is a win-win situation for the people of San Diego.

In 2009, the American Public Transportation Association recognized MTS as the most Outstanding Transit System. This change would only make it that much better by increasing safety measures in the city of San Diego.

Decreasing the number drunk drivers and DUI-related arrests is as simple as a small schedule fix, and its time San Diego makes the quick switch to save lives.

Consent bill hinders judicial rights ANTHONY BERTEAUX SENIOR STAFF COLUMNIST ____________________________________

E

arlier this summer, in light of a dismal sexual assault audit conducted on schools across the nation, I wrote a column praising Senate Bill 967 — famously known as the “yes means yes” law. I praised it for defining sexual consent as an “affirmative, conscious and voluntary agreement” between parties involved through the verbal and non-verbal insinuation of consent. At the time, I applauded its language for including continuous consent, as well as affirmative consent. However, after this new law has been used to justify judicial rulings based on ambiguous proof, I’m here to debunk my original stance on this issue.

While the mass criticism regarding the negligence toward sexual assault reports by college administrators is justified, the implementation and due process involving SB 967 is problematic when it comes to the application of legally ambiguous consent to campus judicial review. This definition of consent violates individual rights to fair and just trials —better known as the Fifth Amendment.

SB 967’s fatal flaw in defining affirmative consent lies in categorizing any sexual act without a perceived verbal or non-verbal “yes” as sexual assault. However, this definition is out of touch with the reality of situations that call for consent. Both verbal and non-verbal expressions can be misunderstood in the process, leading to false accusations.

What it really boils down to is conflicting definitions of what consent really looks like, which is subjective to every sexual relationship.

This idea of continuous consent alongside affirmative consent becomes even more muddled in long-term relationships. While the bill states lengthier relationships aren’t considered as terms for consent, there is no way to create a blanket ruling that accurately defines what each couple considers consensual.

We saw this issue in a legal case earlier this year at Brandeis University. Six months after a gay couple ended their two-year relationship, one accused the other of sexual assault due to unwanted aggressive sexual activity in bed. While one detailed a sexual assault situation as its defined in SB 967, the accused said he had simply kissed his boyfriend while he was still sleeping.

Technically under SB 967, theses kissed become classified as sexual assault as the accuser wasn’t conscious to give affirmative consent. Regardless

of his testimony, the accused was found guilty of sexual assault in front of a college judicial board and was given a disciplinary warning, alongside sexual-assault prevention training. This goes to show something as simple as the testimony of an angry ex can have detrimental consequences by abusing the language of the law.

Should this legally ambiguous system of testimonials become a staple for college judicial boards, it will shift the paradigm regarding burden of proof from the accuser to the accused. The

reliance on he said/she said information shifts creates an atmosphere that leaves the accused appearing guilty until proven innocent, instead of the other way around.

In response to how an innocent person is supposed to prove they received consent under these circumstances, Assemblywoman who co-authored SB 967 Bonnie Lowenthal replied “Your guess is as good as mine.”

To further the problematic process, college judicial reviews deny those

accused to a fair trial by denying them rights usually applied to civil cases such as impartial judges, unbiased juries, representation by counsel, and restrictions on unreliable evidence such as hearsay and prior crimes. Although some schools allow the attendance of independent lawyers, they are oftentimes not allowed to speak, therefore forcing students to defend themselves during hearings. A guilty ruling in a judicial board also requires a lower level of proof than federal courts. “Preponderance of evidence” is a process in which advisors can find someone guilty if they are 50.01 percent certain the accuser is telling the truth.

What we find in the wake of SB 967 is a scene on college campuses where everyone has the risk of being falsely labeled as a rapist without the fundamental rights to properly defend themselves.

Understandably, SB 967 is an extreme response to an ugly situation occurring on college campuses, but to declare students guilty of sexual assault without the due process reserved for civil cases can ruin educational, professional and personal lives. That’s a grave injustice.

Protection clauses are necessary to discern misunderstandings to prevent the criminalization of innocent victims to an otherwise ambiguous law. Sexual assault needs to be dismantled; however it can’t come with the cost of the integrity of our justice systems.

Students try to save money however they can — even if it means eating noodles for a month straight. Luckily for students, there are companies like Groupon and LivingSocial that were created solely for the purpose of helping their users save money.

Launched 2007, Washington D.C. Similarly, LivingSocial also launched as a website devoted to providing a way for users to access deals about possible experiences in a given city.

Merchants receive 60 percent of the revenue per coupon deal or voucher used by customers.

Pros: LivingSocial is also available for download on either iPhone or Android for mobile use. The site also gives the user the option to search by category, keywords, and locations around the world. In addition to the deals offered, LivingSocial also offers a “Coupon” section where users can find increased deals on products. There is also another section showing the newest deals of

the week along with their low prices.

Cons: LivingSocial has huge customer service issues. There are many telling instances on online review boards explaining times when the deal expired before the buyer could use it. LivingSocial does provide a phone number that customers are supposed to call if there is a problem, but they are rarely able to create a solution. Make sure you read the fine print on the deals in the “escape” section and call the hotel to make sure the deal will be available on the specific time of arrival. Many purchases by users were never received and the company provided no support in finding the package.

Returning purchases for a full refund is a nightmare in itself, according to online reviews.

Groupon

Launched 2008, Chicago Groupon launched as a website to provide discounted deals redeemable at businesses in a specific area. Many students use the site to get discounts at restaurants and concerts.

Pros: Groupon can be downloaded on iPhone or Android for mobile usage of its services. Groupon gives the user the ability to search by category, keywords or location. The site also features a “recommended for you” section, giving the user a list of activities based on previous purchased deals and a desired price point. Groupon is more commonly used among college students compared to other

sites run by competitors.

At the bottom of the page, Groupon features the most popular categories searched by other users.

There are numerous restaurants in the San Diego area that offer discounted food and drink credits that may be purchased by the user.

Cons: Make sure to read the fine print for every deal before making a purchase. Many deals expire quickly and have complicated limits on their uses per person.

On some occasions, users find that the product or experience advertised is exaggerated, causing a bad experience. When a user is ordering a product, double clicking may result in a duplicate product that is hard to return. Before booking a hotel, call the hotel for information because many times the deals do not match the rooms as advertised.

In summary, Groupon and LivingSocial offer numerous deals on anything a user is looking for, whether it’s food or an experience, sometimes at half price. However, the cons seem to outweigh the pros.

Think carefully and be cautious before purchasing a deal on either site, even though it’s cheaper.

M

elissa Kennon was admitted into the hospital early Friday morning on Nov. 7 and in a few hours, she succumbed to her injuries. At the age of 19, she tripped and fell five stories after going onto the roof of a nearby apartment complex to look at the stars.

Melissa, like Sara Stelzer, who died four weeks ago from meningococcal meningitis, was a member of Kappa Delta.

The sorority was just beginning to mend the holes the loss of one sister left when the news of Melissa’s death shocked and sadded members once more.

Members remember Sara as an incredible woman with a loveable, quicky outlook on life. She strived to live her life to the fullest and never wanted to miss out on anything. She certainly left a mark on each and every member of Kappa Delta and I am so blessed to be able to

forever call her my sister.

THE FOLLOWING MEMORIES COME FROM KAPPA DELTA SISTERS: “Melissa went to my high school, and even though she was a year younger and it may have seemed as though I didn’t notice her, I definitely did. I thought our friendship ended at St. Francis, but then a beautiful miracle happened and she became my sister in Kappa Delta, and I got to know her so much better. In high school Melissa was a shy wallflower, but in college I think she found her place in Kappa Delta and everyone got to see just how amazing she is. Never in my life have I felt so confused, angry, upset and numb. My heart aches more than ever, but when I think of how she is up there with Sara, it lessens the hurt I feel. That’s the silver lining, and the light in this dark time.”

Aztec defense mutes the Utes Rafael Avitabile Staff Writer _____________________________________ San Diego State men’s basketball beat the University of Utah 53-49 on Tuesday afternoon, moving to 2-0 on the season.

Tuesday’s matchup was SDSU’s first regular season home game televised on ESPN since Feb. 3, 2003 when it hosted the University of Wyoming.

SDSU was stingy on the defensive end, holding Utah to just fewer than 23 percent shooting from the field, including 2-12 from 3-point territory in the first half. The Aztecs’ 27 percent shooting clip wasn’t much better, but nine Utah turnovers helped to keep SDSU within striking distance. The Utes pulled down 22 rebounds compared to the Aztecs’ 14, and went into the locker room with an 18-17 advantage at the half.

Both teams picked it up in the second and nearly doubled their respective scoring totals from the previous half, but inconsistency continued to be the dominant theme on both sides.

“Many people that don’t know basketball will say that it was an ugly game — it wasn’t,” head coach Steve Fisher said.

“We played hard. We defended in a fashion that wins, and we’re going to continue to do that. We’re going to make enough shots to be in every game we play.”

turnovers. Utah wasn’t discouraged from its first-half shooting woes and continued to spot up from deep. Despite all the firsthalf misses, the Utes shot 10 more from beyond the arch in the second half and made only four.

SDSU got a huge kick in the second half from its two forwards, junior Angelo Chol and senior J.J. O’Brien. The score was knotted at 24 with just under 14 minutes left to play before the Aztecs went on a 9-0 scoring run kick-started by six consecutive points from Chol. O’Brien scored every one of his team-leading 12 points in the second half, highlighted by a perfect 6-6 on free throws in the game’s final two minutes. He also pulled down 11 rebounds to notch his first double-double of the season.

Senior guard Aqeel Quinn got the starting nod over Dwayne Polee II who

lost his spot in the starting rotation after showing up 10 minutes late to Sunday’s practice. For the second game in a row, Quinn showed why he’s such an integral part of this Aztec roster.

After scoring 15 points off of the bench in Friday’s win against California State University, Northridge, Quinn was tasked with guarding his former high school teammate and best friend, senior guard Delon Wright. Quinn held Wright, an offensive and defensive All Pac-12 FirstTeam selection last year, to just seven points on 2-13 shooting on the night. The fact that Wright didn’t get his first bucket until there was 1:25 left to play in the game is a better testament to Quinn’s lockdown defense.

“I was in his ear the whole game,” Quinn said. “He’s not going to show the frustration, but I know that going 2-13

is not going to feel good and I definitely made sure he knew. I was just trying to make sure he did not score.”

Utah’s 7-foot freshman forward Jakob Poeltl was held ineffective for the majority of the game thanks to great defense from Chol and junior forward Skylar Spencer.

Although Poeltl brought down 12 rebounds, the double team forced the ball out of his hands and out to the perimeter where the Utes were struggling to find a rhythm. The Aztecs only allowed Poeltl three points and four rebounds in the second half.

The game tipped off at 1 p.m. as part of ESPN’s 24-hour College Hoops TipOff Marathon. The unusual start time caused much concern over attendance, so much so that Fisher and SDSU Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Jim Sterk sent out a signed letter addressed to “whom it may concern” asking for a leave from daily obligations on behalf of fans so that they could take part in a “very important community service project.” Their efforts did not go unnoticed.

“You couldn’t hear anything,” Quinn said of the atmosphere inside Viejas Arena. “People were trying to call out switches, and I know I for sure couldn’t hear any of my players on the team. It was definitely a boost of energy for us on the court.”

The Aztecs will rest on Wednesday before hosting California State University, Bakersfield on Thursday night at 7:30. The game will air on Fox Sports San Diego.

SDSU comedy nothing to joke about hayley spence staff writer ___________________________________ Laughter and cheers filled Hardy Tower on Thursday Nov. 13, as the Skull & Dagger Dramatic Society presented “A Night of Comedy.” The event hosted comedians Connor Waldman, Derrick Murray, and Chip Nicholson with Iota Eta Pi, San Diego State’s improv team, rounding out the night.

Advertised as a standup comedy vs. improv night, it was clear by the audience that the stand-up comedy acts ruled on this night.

Those acts began with Connor Waldman, a fifth-year senior at SDSU who was extremely happy that he is about to graduate. His act was one that centered on the college student and college life, from one-night stands to money and spending that money.

The crowd seemed to relate to his act as most of the people in the audience were college students.

It was easy to laugh and realize that we did the same things no matter how ridiculous or ironic it was. He was also kind enough to add into his act a little advice to the freshmen and sophomores of the crowd, regarding general education classes. Waldman

advised students to take the ridiculous classes, such as world history, early so you aren’t bored out of your mind later on and can concentrate on the fun classes that you actually have an interest in.

Second to perform was Derrick Murray, a 31-year-old comedian from Los Angeles. His act didn’t center around student life, but more on overall things in life we find hilarious, such as social media and break ups, cool moms and Netflix.

Sex was a huge theme between all the comedians, and Murray was no exception, even going into the topic of his lady friends setting him

up with their friends and claiming “She’s really pretty, well I think she’s really pretty.” His absolutely hilarious act was the highlight of the night, going into the topics of zombies, race, U.F.C. and drinking with friends.

The final act of comedians for the night was Chip Nicholson, another SDSU student. Again sex was a key subject of his act, along with race and drinking and friends. Everything was relatable and that brought even more humor to the night; from Vegas trips to harping on the younger generation and their desire for toys.

The night ended with Iota Eta Pi’s improv performance, which was good-natured fun. This group of SDSU students always brings a laugh when they perform. However it felt like after the stand-up acts, something was missing with the improv acts.

The night was definitely a good view of both stand-up and improv, because they are both very different.

Many of the students seemed to prefer the punch lines of the standup acts, whereas the improv act brought laughter to jokes that weren’t planned. It was all shocking and surprising.

Overall the acts were good for the night. The stand-up acts each tended to concentrate on a more sexual topic or a topic of race, but it was all in good nature and all good fun. The solid lineup of good comedy definitely was worth the late night. The acts had jokes that everyone could relate to and they sure kept the audience laughing, which is their obvious goal.

If the show didn’t make you laugh, I don’t know what will.

Alumnus strums his way to success reina valenzuela staff writer ____________________________________ Most musicians wish to be able to touch people’s lives through their music, but not everyone succeeds. This wish did come true, however, for underground indie songwriter Jesse Daniel Edwards.

Music entered Edwards’ life at a very young age. Being the eldest of nine children, it was hard to entertain them all.

“My first memory is playing on this keyboard that my mom got at a garage sale in Rancho Bernardo, and at that time a Game Boy was pretty popular but we were never allowed to have that,” Edwards said. “We didn’t have TV or video games or all the other things kids had to entertain themselves, so music was kind of something we would use to keep entertained and spend time together as a family.”

Edwards and his brother had a band based out of Nashville that eventually came to an end, which made them decide to relocate back to San Diego.

They attempted to pursue a Los Angeles deal that was on the table, but unfortunately it ended up not being a good fit. As time passed, Edwards ended up working at a music camp in the mountains but continued to get pushed by a friend to carry on with music.

“A friend of mine in Long Beach kept nagging me to get out of the mountain and do events, which I was very hesitant to do,” he said. “He eventually talked me into doing these events with him, and I met the band through him and they were kind of mutual friends.”

The band became known as Nanner Splits and from then on it’s been perfect chemistry.

“We started meeting up and talking about music, and as all this is happening you’re growing together and getting to know each other,” Edwards said. “I feel like I got pretty lucky these guys are great musicians and good character, which I think is most important.”

Many musicians have the goal to become successful with a huge amount of money, but Edwards had a different goal in mind with his music.

“When I was young I wanted to be a rock star, but as I’ve gotten older and saw what the music industry is like, the goal became to grow,” he said. “To see that music is a part of people’s live and affects people so positively, the goal was to really inspire and make the best music possible that is really going to touch people and mean something to someone when they hear it.”

Edwards is currently in the process of releasing his new album, “American Dreaming,” on Dec. 7.

“This ‘American Dreaming’ we are recording is just like everything else I’ve done,” Edwards said. “It questions about life and death and what is meaningful to us. As a songwriter you’re always looking at something with a frame around it to see how you can put it in a few words to form a chorus.”

Edwards will perform at Lestat’s West on Nov. 21, and his meaningful music should inspire to reflect on life.

“I don’t have easy songs that are just about nothing.” Edwards said. “All my songs are meant to fulfill a feeling very strongly and put it into a song.”

M

any of you may believe this to be a rant about what it’s like to be a broke college student at San Diego State. Let me reassure you, it most definitely is. In college, nothing is cheap.

Rent is high and utility payments need to be paid every month, especially the Internet bill, so that you can access online assignments — and more importantly, Netflix. At the start of every semester, we all pay obscene amounts of money for “required” textbooks that we may never need to use for the class anyway. You realize that you’re in debt from college tuition and loans, and you constantly wonder how long it’s going to take you to pay back all of the money you owe for your education.

When you are no longer a freshman, you leave the magical world of meal plans and enter the not-so-magical world of grocery stores. Buying groceries is expensive and totally overwhelming because there are way too many options of the same product. But of course, you end up buying the knock-off brand because it’s ridiculously cheaper than all of the

other products. Many times you try to buy healthy food, but figure that pizza, noodles and coffee fit into all of the required food groups. Sometimes there are weekends when all you live off is junk food because you either don’t want to go to the store, or you have no money to spend at the store. Going to Target is the ultimate struggle because rather than leaving the store with what you need, you buy an array of things you don’t need.

If you ever go out to a restaurant with your friends, you try to make that meal last all day, no matter how small it is.

Many times you ask for more chips or bread for your table just so you can shove it into a to-go box for later.

Sometimes you run out of necessities like hand soap and toilet paper so you fill the hand soap up with water, take toilet paper from public restrooms and wonder how you ever became so broke. You know you’ve hit rock bottom when you rip two-ply toilet paper into one-ply so that it will last longer. If you live two hours or less from SDSU, you commonly drive home to do your laundry that’s been piling up over the last month because paying $3 per wash and dry is outlandish. You jump at the opportunity for “free” anything, and hoard dozens of fliers advertising free things.

When you see people on campus giving away free things or fliers for free things, you immediately run in their direction like a small child running excitedly to the end of their front lawn when the ice cream truck comes.

When hanging out with your other college friends, the question is always, “what can we do that’s free?” Usually that question leads to watching a movie, playing cards, or just hanging out and talking because no one wants to drive and use their gas. You must figure out the least amount of money you can spend that gets you from point A to point B without your car dying on the way, because gas is so expensive in California. You walk anywhere you can because walking is free, even though it’s time consuming.

Finding quarters — whether they’re in your car, between your couch cushions, or on the ground — is always a miracle. You begin to realize that you pay for a lot of things, mostly food, with the loose change you’ve scavenged from various places that week.

Being in college causes you to cringe when thinking about your bank balance. When you finally look at it, you cry for a good hour as you stare at your $5 balance. But I mean, life could always be worse, right? Imagine if there were only one flavor of Ramen.
