SDSU 67 | WYO 58 Coming into last night’s game against the Wyoming Cowboys, senior center Garrett Green and sophomore guard Jamaal Franklin were nursing ankle injuries and both of their statuses were questionable for the game.

Well, both quieted any doubts as they came up with big performances to help the San Diego State men’s basketball team claim a 67-58 overtime win against Wyoming.

Franklin scored 12 points, six of them coming in overtime to help SDSU avoid its fourth straight loss.

Green had his best game as an Aztec as he scored 14 points and recorded three rebounds. Green’s 14 points came on a 6-for-6

shooting effort. The two impressed their teammates with their effort battling against injuries.

“What these two guys are doing really exemplifies how mentally and physically tough these guys are by playing through ankle injuries,” senior forward Tim Shelton said after the game. “Just being tough and gutting it out. I’m really proud of these guys and we got the win. I’m just excited.”

The win was the 21st of the season for SDSU. After New Mexico lost to Colorado State on Tuesday, the Aztecs find themselves trailing the Lobos by a game for the Mountain West Conference lead with three games remaining.

Ending the slide After three straight losses, SDSU seemed due for a win. It had been nearly three weeks since the Aztecs were last victorious in a game. The team has now persevered through tough times and cleared some unchartered territory.

“It feels good,” Franklin said. “I’ve never been through that before. It was hard but I’m kind of glad it happened to us because it makes us love the game more, appreciate it more.”

Franklin displayed how much he wanted the win in overtime. His five straight points to start the extra session gave the Aztecs the separation they needed. Franklin scored two points in the first half, but had ten points in the second half and overtime.

He said he looked to be more aggressive in the second half and it ended up helping the team.

The conference grind This was another in a series of what has proved to be difficult conference games for SDSU. After losing three straight games and being taken to overtime in conference play, Fisher emphasizes how tough the league really is.

Aztecs earn their SDSU silenced by UCR share of title Michael Manbert

SDSU 68 | YWO 55 The San Diego State women’s basketball team was able to add its second checkmark to its lists of team goals on Tuesday night.

SDSU already reached its 20th win of the season last week, putting it in position for the next goal: clinching at least a share of the Mountain West title.

They did just that, as the Aztecs (215, MW 11-1) defeated the Wyoming Cowgirls 68-55 in Laramie, Wyo. The 13-point victory didn’t come easily, as SDSU had to endure a delayed charter flight, a diverted landing in Cheyenne and snow plow along with a police escort to reach Laramie — a city in which the Aztecs haven’t won since 1997.

These conditions didn’t take too much of a toll on the Aztecs apparently, as junior guard Courtney Clements led the team with 25 points and five rebounds, while junior center Malia Nahinu added 12 points of her own.

Junior guard Chelsea Hopkins also played a solid game scoring nine points, dishing six assists and snatching five steals, which tied her career high.

SDSU took longer than usual to settle in against the Cowgirls, but it made for an exciting game. The first half had plenty of back-and-forth action as the lead changed 14 times.

Like every win, the most important lead change was the last one. It came

when freshman forward Chairese Culberson, who led the Aztecs with seven rebounds, received a clean pass from freshman guard Ahjalee Harvey to make a layup while drawing a foul.

The layup would tie the score and the free throw would give SDSU a 30-29 advantage heading into halftime.

Still, a one-point margin certainly leaves no room for error.

“I even told them before the game, ‘Just don’t panic, it will be a close game’” SDSU head coach Beth Burns said. “’We’re not going to put the hammer down until the second half.’”

The Aztecs took that to heart and controlled the majority of the second half, aside from once when Wyoming showed signs of an upset.

The Cowgirls were able to close the SDSU lead to 43-42 with 10:14 left in the matchup, but Clements knocked down a clutch 3-pointer to keep the Aztecs on top.

With 3:17 remaining, SDSU pulled away from the Cowgirls and finished the clinching win with a dominant 11-0 run.

SDSU now looks to take sole possession of the MW title when it plays Colorado State at 1 p.m. this Saturday in Fort Collins.

“There’s nothing guaranteed in our league with everybody’s RPI,” Burns said, referring to NCAA tournament chances. “So the most important thing for us to do is to just keep on winning.”

UCR 7 | SDSU 1 The San Diego State baseball team was nearly blanked Tuesday evening at UC Riverside as it faced off against a Highlanders squad that dominated the contest from the start.

Four UCR pitchers would hold the Aztecs to just one hit during the course of the first seven innings. Highlander starting pitcher Joe Patito made his first start after having served as UCR’s closer last season.

UCR wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as it took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Despite freshman Greg Allen’s double, which would eventually have him cross home plate in the eighth, and a couple of hits by senior Jomel Torres and sophomore Cody Slader in the ninth, two runs were all Riverside would need. The packed house cheered as the Highlanders won 71 and improved to 2-2 on the season, while the Aztecs fell to 1-3.

However, there was still a bit of silver lining on a night that didn’t have too many positives for an SDSU team still without its head coach. Tony Gwynn is recovering from surgery performed on Feb. 14 that removed a malignant tumor from the inside of the Hall of Famer’s right cheek. The fact the Aztecs never really competed Tuesday night (they were down 7-0 after four innings,) allowed young pitchers on the team, many of whom are freshman, some muchneeded game experience.

With such a young squad, perhaps a lopsided loss early in the season was useful for the team. It may have provided game time and experience for players who would otherwise be utilized rarely and will serve the team better than a one-

Although such a strategy seemingly backfired Tuesday night, only time will tell if the Aztecs’ pitchers can deliver this season.

SDSU will resume play at 6 p.m. tonight as it hosts Kansas State to kick off the first of four for this year’s annual USD Tournament.

There’s nothing textbook about iBooks 2 iPad users delight in the academic assets of iBooks 2 Brittany Fasano staff writer Apple recently launched iBooks 2, an innovative app that allows textbook manufacturers to create interactive displays for iPad readers. Instead of paying hundreds of dollars for heavy textbooks, iBooks 2 grants students the opportunity to learn virtually anywhere with weightless alternatives that cost $14.99 or less. With such versatile, crisp features, iBooks 2 makes clunky $100 textbooks seem like a thing of the past.

Navigating through chapters is quick and easy with options such as pointand-click definitions, zooming and the ability to turn pages with the swipe of a finger. Studying can become simpler and more enjoyable. As the application itself is free, users need only purchase the books themselves.

“I have to take a lot of science classes and with the ability to zoom in on telescopic slides, watch videos and use the 3-D models, I think this program would definitely make studying better,” kinesiology sophomore Ryan Byron Fields said. “I also wouldn’t fall asleep reading my textbook anymore.”

According to Apple, users will be able to rotate 3-D images for a better grasp of what they are studying.

Books can also be displayed in either portrait or landscape views, which make texts and images easier to interact with.

“Education is deep in our DNA and it has been from the very beginning,” Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Philip Schiller said in an interview with The New York Times. “Now with iBooks 2 for iPad, students have a more dynamic, engaging and truly interactive way to read and learn, using the device they already love.”

This application allows students to study for classes with effortless navigation, searching and highlighting capabilities. They also have the ability to use study cards and lesson reviews.

Along with iBooks 2, Apple has launched an electronic bookstore where users can download textbooks, iBooks Author (a book-creation and publishing program) and iTunes U, an application instructors can utilize to design digital curricula.

In order for iBooks 2 to work, schools must pay for rights to iPad textbooks every year instead of paying a one-time fee that can last as many as six years. The publishing world also must adjust as Apple takes a 30 percent commission on sales.

Though iBooks 2 is a relatively new application with several hurdles to overcome when competing with Amazon’s Kindle e-reader, Apple promises positive results.

“If I had an iPad, I would use this application,” pre-nursing sophomore Devon Vanderwiele said when asked if she would download iBooks 2. “I think it’s brilliant. I think the idea that I could have all my textbooks on one device is great and it would cut the cost of having to buy all my textbooks. It just seems a lot more convenient.”

Tickets for His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama’s April 19 lecture at San Diego State went on sale for the public at 10 a.m. yesterday. Within an hour, every single seat in Viejas Arena was gone.

The Dalai Lama’s upcoming visits to three of San Diego’s universities were sold out before 11:20 a.m. The University of San Diego’s lecture filled up within six minutes.

“With such a high demand and limited capacity at the three universities, it just wasn’t possible to seat everybody who wanted a ticket,” Pamela Gray Payton, assistant vice president of public affairs at USD, said.

SDSU’s Viejas Arena holds 12,000 people. According to Melissa Henss, SDSU’s assistant director of presidential events, every one of those spots was filled before 11 a.m. She said they even had to open up sections they had planned on withholding, in order to meet demand.

“We anticipated it would sell very quickly,” she said.

Henss said the event’s pre-sale, which opened up ticket sales to SDSU students, faculty and staff, sold approx-

imately 4,500 tickets before Wednesday morning. The remaining 7,500 tickets sold in the single hour they were made available to the public.

“We kept telling people, ‘Get your tickets, because they’re going to be gone,’” SDSU Provost Nancy Marlin said. “There’s such great demand and interest to see him.”

SDSU communications senior Chapman Chung, who saw the Dalai Lama once before in Hong Kong, made sure to reserve his ticket early Monday afternoon.

“Everybody should go see (the Dalai Lama) before he dies,” Chung said.

Several university students and community members took to the Internet yesterday to complain about difficulties in securing tickets for any of the three lectures. Twitter user Victoria Renee wrote: “The Dalai Lama tickets sold out faster than Coachella did.”

According to several reports from Twitter, online ticket-purchasing website Ticketmaster was overwhelmed with page requests during the selling period; which meant several hopeful attendees received error messages or got locked out of the site completely.

“Looks like the amount of people trying to get tix for the @DalaiLama is shutting Ticketmaster down,” SDSU alumna Patricia B. Dwyer wrote.

Several students said they did not anticipate how quickly the tickets would sell out. Santa Monica College student Yvette Celaya Alvarez was planning on driving down to attend the SDSU lecture, but said she “had forgotten to check back on when tickets went on sale” yesterday morning. Later that afternoon, she found out the tickets were gone.

Alvarez said she plans on exploring other options to get tickets, which may include looking online. Several ads for SDSU tickets have already appeared on Craigslist, with prices ranging between $75-$110 per ticket.

SDSU student tickets originally sold for $11 each, while general admission was $25 per seat.

Census cycles to safety ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’ analyzed Anthony Mendiola

San Diego State city planning professor Dr. Sherry Ryan is analyzing cycling behavior using data obtained with the help of students. The data comes from in-field observance; counting bikers in a census at strategic locations around San Diego, including the heavy-cycling corridors along Montezuma Road between College Avenue and El Cajon Boulevard.

This data will allow regional planners at San Diego Association of Governments to better allocate funding for improved bicycle infrastructure, which will translate into safer cycling environments and a possible increase in cycling rates.

Ryan said the relative dearth in cycling data and analysis techniques is a hindrance to planning and transforming communities into more bikefriendly places.

“What is needed is more data on cycling rates — the type of people cycling, for example, age, gender, ethnicity, as this gives planners numbers that can then be used to allocate funds into the proper channels,” Ryan said.

In one undergraduate course she teaches, students are able to get realworld experience while collecting data by observing and counting the bikeusers they see at key points.

Ryan gave campus efforts, such as the new colored bike lanes, high marks. Before the colored bike lane, wheeled conveyances, including bicycles, were prohibited on campus.

However, Ryan also said the lack of data can lead to faulty assumptions.

For example, some SDSU facility planners have reported collisions between bikes and pedestrians have increased 300 percent since the bike lanes were put into place. But that rate of increase in collisions would need to be reported in a manner that accounts for the change in overall number of bikers.

In other words, while collision rates have increased 300 percent, cycling rates may have also increased by a relatively larger amount. Ryan said one cannot conclude facilities are unsafe until the number of users are known.

According to Ryan, there are various approaches to improving San Diego’s cycling infrastructure. One group tends to advocate for more integration of the cyclist into traffic, or “vehicularizing” the cyclist. The second, more European approach seeks to separate the cyclist from vehicular traffic and provide as much buffer from cars and traffic as possible.

Ryan said research shows it is in the latter environments where people tend to see more cycling by children, women and minority populations.

“In Mira Mesa / Sorrento Valley, I’ve seen bicyclists riding against the flow

of car traffic as a result of no bicycle facilities,” SDSU graduate student in city planning, Javier P. Ramos, said. “It is sad that in San Diego so much roadway space is given to the automobile and very little to other modes of active travel. I hope that my participation as a bike counter contributes to some form of change in our transportation design of roadways to incorporate other modes of travel.”

Another student researcher, Stephanie Ramos, also enjoyed participating in the study.

“I realized though, that there are fewer women than men bicycling and this is due to not feeling safe whether it be because there is no bike lane or it could just be the area in general is not pedestrian friendly,” she said. “Women should be out there biking as much as men are.”

Biking is far more common in Europe and other areas of the country.

The Ramos’ said they hope someday San Diego can have better biking facilities.

“I collected data downtown, one place by Old Town, and another by Pacific Beach,” Ramos said. “I was doing a gender comparison and the conclusion was clear after all the data was plugged in that safety and no bike lanes were the top reasons why women did not bike more throughout the San Diego region.”

On Monday, its inaugural lecture “Identity in the Military: Exploring the Repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” took place at the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center.

“Under ‘don’t ask don’t tell,’ you live in constant fear that people will find out,” Phelps said.

While enlisting, he was told that it meant “no one’s going to ask you about your sexuality, and you’re not going to tell anyone,” but he found that to be wrong. He was asked several times about his orientation and said he was put in an uncomfortable situation.

Even though DADT seemed liked a two-part agreement, only the “teller,” not the “asker” would be chastised if someone was found to be gay. DADT forced LGBT service members to either admit their sexuality or lie.

“Being gay in the military is not about sex, it’s not even about sexuality. It’s an element of my identity, just like anything else,” Phelps said.

Flossing benefits more than tooth deep

Floss is more than a piece of string. It can save lives. By incorporating it into their daily routines, flossers not only experience better oral hygiene but also decrease their risk of gingivitis and heart disease. | BROOKE VALLS, STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER

Kambra Potter staff writer Wake up. Shower. Comb hair. Brush teeth. Most people have specific morning hygiene routines that include a variety of tasks. However, one crucial task is often overlooked: flossing.

While some may feel they don’t have the time to floss, others may not realize its significance to their health.

Either way, the popular notion seems to be that if there is no visible sign of food particles between teeth, flossing is unnecessary.

While most people may brush their teeth daily, this step alone does not sufficiently remove the plaque and bacteria that builds inside the mouth.

According to Susan Arlin, a registered dental hygienist at the SDSU Dental Clinic, toothbrushes cannot reach into the tiny crevices between teeth to remove the plaque and biofilm that forms there.

According to Colgate Professional, “biofilms form when bacteria adhere to surfaces in some form of watery environment and begin to excrete a slimy, glue-like substance that can stick to all kinds of materials …

Essentially, a biofilm may form on any surface exposed to bacteria and some amount of water.”

Every human mouth is full of both good and bad bacteria. When communities of disease-causing bacteria accumulate, a yellowish biofilm called dental plaque builds on and between teeth. This biofilm weakens the tooth it attaches to by leeching out the tooth’s essential minerals, particularly calcium. Weak spots caused from accumulated plaque are clearly visible on x-rays and can progress to cavities between teeth if left untreated.

According to Arlin, 99 percent of people who floss regularly will not experience between-teeth cavities.

Almost all students Arlin has treated have some form of gingivitis. She suggests not only flossing between teeth, but also sliding the floss underneath the gum to remove hard-to-reach biofilm, which can cause the cells in the gums to break down if not removed.

Untreated gingivitis can lead to a progressive stage of gum disease called periodontitis, the inflammation and infection of the ligaments and bones that support the teeth. In the periodontitis stage, plaque can move beneath the gum line and release toxins that destroy gum tissues. Once this happens, gums must be treated surgically. This stage of gum disease is also a leading cause of tooth loss.

According to Arlin, the most important fact is that gum disease is 100 percent preventable. Properly brushing twice daily along with flossing after each brush will undoubtedly decrease the risk of gum disease and will annihilate the odor-causing bacteria that live in places toothbrushes can’t reach. The tongue also harbors bacteria and should be brushed daily as well.

How can those concerned with their oral health tell if they have too much plaque or are at risk for gum disease? Often, excessive consumption of carbohydrates like chips and doughnuts is responsible for plaque buildup. Those who consume fewer carbs and more raw vegetables and fruits typically have less plaque because raw foods work as teethcleaning agents.

“Usually once you start noticing something’s wrong, you’ve got a full-blown problem. Gum disease doesn’t hurt unless it’s in an advanced stage.”

Electric brushes are more powerful and can reach farther places than average toothbrushes. However, this should not be considered a replacement for flossing. Arlin suggests purchasing an Oral-B or Sonicare electric toothbrush, which are great for those with gingivitis.

When bacteria in the mouth becomes too much for the body to handle, common complications serve as indicators of gingivitis. Red, swollen gums and bleeding are the simplest way to identify oral health complications; however, a dental visit is the only way to diagnose gum disease with certainty.

“Usually once you start noticing something’s wrong, you’ve got a full-

blown problem,” Arlin said. “Gum disease doesn’t hurt unless it’s in an advanced stage.”

According to Dr. Kevin Fitzpatrick, chief dentist at the SDSU Dental Clinic, most people should schedule dental appointments every six months. Those with excessive plaque should visit as frequently as every four months. Regular dental visits need not be feared as Fitzpatrick enjoys taking the time to educate each patient during his or her visit.

DOD favors spirituality to rape prevention THINKSTOCK

ith the powersthat-be in the Department of Defense finally allowing more options for female soldiers, increasing awareness of sexual assault in the military has been a hot news item recently. Since 2006 there has been a 64 percent increase in violent sexual assaults, and our nation’s military leaders are responding to this problem with several programs designed to enhance awareness of this terrible problem. How much are they spending? The budget related to sexual assault prevention in the U.S. military is projected to exceed $113 million this year. Obviously, the Pentagon considers this a serious issue.

However, it is not considered as serious a problem as the “spiritual fitness” of soldiers. The U.S. Army spent more than $125 million on the mandatory holistic fitness program called the Comprehensive Soldier Fitness test last year. Part of the assessment is designed to measure the spiritual fitness of service members. What is spiritual fitness, you ask? It’s difficult to find an actual definition. When looking at the CSF website, it’s hard not to arrive at the conclusion that the testing process is an unconstitu-

Isn’t that what soldiers are supposed to be doing in the first place?

Who cares if a soldier goes to church or not, and who thinks that whether or not they go to church is anyone else’s business? Does it matter if a soldier is making the twelfth fold on the flag because they are honoring specifically Judeo-Christian deities and biblical characters? Isn’t it enough they fold the flag a certain way out of respect for our country?

Brig. Gen. Rhonda Cornum, director of the CSF program, is leading the charge in the war against soldiers’ religious privacy. Cornum is a hero of the 1991 Iraq War, when she was captured by Iraqi forces.

She was held for several days and was sexually abused by her captors.

One would think that if anyone would see the urgent need for the reprioritizing of tax dollars for Army programs designed to mitigate risks of sexual assault, it would be her.

Instead, Cornum is highly focused on the CSF program, saying,

“We must ensure that the military remains respectful of differing beliefs and that it provides equal treatment to every person ...”

While the military is engaged in multiple theaters of combat around the globe and issues such as sexual assault are clearly in dire need of solutions, all in the face of a national, catastrophic budget crisis, how can anyone think this is a worthwhile way to be spending taxpayer money? Beyond the obvious ethical and legal implications, is this even a reasonable way to be using limited resources? The military has a clear purpose — to facilitate our national security. Maybe the $125 million being spent asking soldiers irrele-

The statements made by Cornum may be true, but there are two important factors demanding immediate consideration.

First, the military has no right to violate the privacy of soldiers in this way, for any reason. Article VI, paragraph 3 of the U.S. Constitution specifically states, “no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust

under the United States.” This testing process is illegal and immoral.

Second, what are the implications of this testing? Reverend Skip Lindeman, of the United Church of Christ has asked some relevant questions, saying, “Think about it: A guy takes the test and gets all Agrades on spirituality, and then says, ‘Gimme a gun so I can go kill as many of the enemy as I can!’ Is that

what a spiritual person does? How can anybody be spiritual, and then go blow another human being to smithereens? Please!”

Rabbi Simcha Backman responded to news of this testing by saying, “We must ensure that the military remains respectful of differing beliefs, and that it provides equal treatment to every person who takes up the noble calling of service.”

Even religious leaders think this is a bad idea. Enough is enough. It’s time for the DOD to scrap this program, and focus on programs which serve to protect our troops. The bottom line is, service members are adults who are fully capable of making up their minds on their own when it comes to religion.

There are at least three major scenes that are tragically sad, mostly because the two fictional stars in the story become so empathetic even before these events happen. “The Artist” is also hilarious, suspenseful and always mesmerizing.

If there is a single scene that explains why she should get an Academy Award, it is the intense climactic confrontation between Aibileen and Hilly Holbrook (Bryce Dallas Howard). It is not only a highlight of the nominees for best actress, it is also one of the most unforgettable cinematic scenes of the past year.

On top of that, “Hugo” is a rare example of a live action 3-D journey that actually works wonders in 3-D. If that is not enough, “Hugo” is as much of a letter to the old days of Hollywood and Scorsese’s irresistible passion for that time shines through.

David: Bérénice Bejo for her genuinely funny and extraordinarily touching work in “The Artist.”

David: Janusz Kaminski. “War Horse” should take this category for its extremely strong picturesque visuals. There are plenty of memorable images featured in the chillingly authentic war sequences as well as the many scenes in Devon, England, which gives Steven Spielberg’s movie a wonderfully retro vibe.

Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, held on a large farm in Manchester, Tenn. from June 7 through 10, has released its lineup. The festival’s headliners include Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the recently reunited The Beach Boys and Phish. In addition to the headliners, the festival will feature the likes of: Bon Iver, The Shins, Foster The People, Skrillex, Young the Giant, Ludacris, The Kooks, White Denim and many others.

According to its website, there are still more artists to be announced, along with a comedy lineup.

Named “the ultimate over-the-top summer festival” in 2008 by Rolling Stone magazine, Bonnaroo held its first festival in 2002. The festival is known for its awareness of sustainability and has worked to make the festival as green as possible, including constructing a solar-powered stage. As far as

recycling is concerned, 68 percent of total waste from last year’s event was either recycled or composted. Festival coordinators urge festivalgoers to “heighten (their) global consciousness” and reduce carbon footprints.

Tickets were scheduled to go on sale last weekend, but were suspended during the first day because of overwhelming demand. Festival coordinators released a statement via Bonnaroo’s website, in which they announced more tickets will be on sale this Saturday at 9 a.m. Tickets include camping and parking and are currently in “price level 4” at $244.50 plus applicable fees for all four days. Prices will eventually increase to “price level 5” at $259.50 plus fees. Two-person VIP passes are available for $1,399.50. Those willing to brave the 2,000-mile road trip to Tennessee in an RV should be prepared to pay slightly extra. Event organizers also offer a free shuttle to and from Nashville International Airport.

Grimes delves into future Courtney Rogin staff writer Imagine the year is 2045 and there are flying cars that pilot themselves and real hover boards from “Back to the Future Part II” are available for purchase, not just replicas for all the nostalgics out there.

What’s playing in the background of the winged vehicles transporting people to their Jetsons-style abodes? That would be the “Blade Runner”-esque style of Grimes’ new album “Visions.”

Hailing from Montréal, Québec, Claire Boucher (who takes on the stage name, “Grimes”) is officially three albums into experimental mechanical pop. “Visions” is Boucher’s third full-length album since her debut in 2010. The first two albums almost seem like practice when compared to “Visions.” Clocking in at just short of 48 minutes, the album represents the most efficient form of time travel the world has ever known.

“Visions” opens with a short, modern ‘90s flashback introduction track and breaks into electronica gold with “Genesis,” the first of many appearances of Boucher’s falsetto vocals. The

falsetto continues in an almost ‘80s bubblegum Madonna-pop fashion in the next few songs. Combined with ambient sounds from synthesizers, Grimes has created a futuristic fusion of conflicting themes.

The classic track on this album is easily “Circumambient.” The track would serve nicely as background to scenes from “The Fifth Element.” The multiple vocal tracks (think Ace of Base) take on all sorts of depth, mixing with a moody, electronic beat.

First-timers will likely be convinced there are more vocalists than Boucher on the track. However, it’s just her skillful manipulation.

“Skin,” the second to last track of the album, is the other must-hear song. As the longest song of the album, it is an atmospheric masterpiece. It is a hipster’s answer for the urge to listen to Enya, but in the best way possible.

Boucher makes Enya-styling cool again. “Skin” takes the listener to a foggy fourth dimension, with a great mix of vocals and keyboards, attesting to her diverse talent as a solo artist.

The album fits well on the virtual iTunes shelf next to M83 and Kisses, when looking to explore the space wildernesses throughout the Milky

Way, or just some basic stargazing from Earth.

Now, Boucher is also a visual artist when it comes to her performances, something easily imagined after a listen to her music. She has shown she is capable of electrifying the stage and the audience while touring with Lykke Li last year. Grimes has ventured out on a headlining tour this Spring, making a stop in San Diego Saturday night at Soda Bar. Tickets for the show, unfortunately, are sold out. Be sure to check out “Visions,” which was released on Arbutus Records Tuesday.

Acro-Cats rock for an absurdly fun evening These endearing and bizarre performers are worth seeing Courtney Rogin staff writer Many animals do tricks: old dogs learn new ones, Polly says she wants a cracker and dolphins can do flips.

These are all great tricks but are standard fare for the average household. Then there are the Acro-Cats.

Unlike your everyday cat that uses the new leather couch as a scratching post, these cats jump through sparkly hoops, climb ladders and even have their very own rock band.

Yes, a rock band – complete with more cowbell.

The Acro-Cats completed their tour stop in San Diego this past week, and have since moved on to Los Angeles before completing their tour later this spring and returning home to Chicago.

The amazing spectacle that is the Acro-Cats began nine years ago, with the inspiration from trainer Samantha Martin’s cat, Tuna. Tuna still tours with the cats today, taking on the roll of a diva.

The show encompasses many forms of trained tricks and largely relies on clicker training, a method that utilizes a small handheld clicker to give commands. The handlers use it to train the pets to not only do incredible

balancing atop balls and the everdainty Tuna ringing a bell. The show also features special guests including some “Ratatouille” friends and Hendiana Jones (the hen, obviously). Spoiler alert: Hens are really good at bowling; cats are, however, off by a few pins.

The scene-stealer of the night was the final act: The Rock Cats. A simple, kitschy setup atop a clothed kitchen table holds a miniature pink guitar, drums and keyboard, all fit for a cat that has dreams of being the next member of Josie & the Pussycats. Songs are different every show, rely entirely on pure improvisation and are hardly in time with each other, but there is a significant amount of magic in each rendition.

Dakota, on the drums, needed extra coaxing to get into the groove, but guitarist Pinky was a professional, continuously playing when the others wandered around their instruments, probably making sure they were plugged in. Tuna made a special appearance on the cowbell, giving new meaning to the classic saying, “we need more cowbell.”

Acro-Cats is for the young, old and everyone in between. Whether it’s a first date or 50th wedding anniversary, it’s a unique way to spend a night. Perhaps most impressive, fellow cat owners will identify with the amazement of a cat jumping into a carrying kennel with ease and without giving the owner new battle scars. A masterful trick indeed.

Frugality is for losers

I

have no limits when it comes to a few of my favorite things.

And I don’t mean I indulge myself on copious amounts of fresh-cut Columbian cocaine whenever I’m feeling a little sad. I mean I have no sense of frugality or sensibility when certain opportunities present themselves.

Some people like to blow their money on Loubotins and window tints. But when it comes to certain things, I’ll pretty much voluntarily plunge myself below the poverty line.

I was taught to balance my checkbook at a very young age. I’m not sure if it was school or my accountant stepmother’s doing, but it happened. I look back on that skill and realize how absolutely useless the physical act of writing expenses in a log at the back of your checkbook is (because, like everything else in the world, there’s an app for that).

However, the idea and intention remain equally useful and important.

Because of the aforementioned money-conscious family member (and the fact that I’m a Jew), I’m always extremely aware of the money I spend. I save whenever I can. I buy off-brands at the market (don’t tell me you can taste the difference between Kraft macaroni and cheese and the Kroger brand cheesy noodle dinner, because you can’t), I never order a drink with dinner and I’m constantly online, scouring for free Redbox codes (shout out to my other poor college students: type ‘DVDONME’ or ‘BREAKROOM’ in the promo code section next time you rent a movie and it’s free for a day.

Ever since I moved out of my parents’ house when I was 17, saving money and spending wisely have been on the forefront of my mind.

I’m really good at cutting it close and living paycheck to paycheck but ultimately, I make $23 stretch as far as humanly possible. Sometimes I even surprise myself. Once I did my grocery shopping at the dollar store, and, while it wasn’t one of my proudest moments, it happened.

Most of the time I can say no to casual outings with friends; movies come out on DVD eventually and chances are, the restaurant they

I don’t like or need fancy things.

All my apartment furniture came from Ikea and if it’s my style, it’s usually big, bulky and plastic. With such refined (not) taste, my purchases generally run pretty cheap. Also, I work retail. So I get a pretty fat discount on clothes and (believe it or not) I actually enjoy sitting at home with my DVR most nights, as opposed to getting dressed up and pretending to enjoy getting hot, sweaty and writhed upon by a notso-handsome stranger.

Give me a great concert, though, and I’m screwed. Frugality is out the window. I’ll pretty much pay whatever it takes to see a favorite band.

Even if it’s not a favorite band and it just sounds like a good time, count me in. I threw down almost $100 to see Gavin DeGraw, Maroon 5 and Train last summer. I’m willing to shell out almost double that to go see Coldplay this summer, and if it comes down to a band not coming to San Diego, I’ll get in my litter-box car and drive as far as I need to go to make it happen.

I guess what I’m saying is, a good live show is my own (lessdeadly) version of fresh-cut Columbian cocaine. And it stems back to my adolescence.

I’m not exactly sure where this do-whatever-it-takes-to-make-ithappen-for-music attitude came from, but I’m sure my parents are partly (if not fully) to blame. They’re both huge music buffs. My dad used to have the same attitude about going to every show he could and even went to New York City by himself for a big tribute show with a bunch of his favorite artists. My mom saw Steely Dan by herself and said it was one of the best experiences of her life. It has to be in my genetic code. And they did everything they could to make sure I was the same way.

You see, I’ve been going to Jimmy Buffett concerts with my dad since I was old enough to, well, breathe (not that Parrothead is any sort of pillar in the music community, but being inundated with such a party scene centered around nothing but good times and good music allowed me to build a strong correlation between music and mindless fun) and when I got old enough to be somewhat independent, my mom would let me jet down to Hollywood for small shows at venues such as Avalon, Henry Fonda Theater and Key Club, as long as I promised to get up for school the next morning.

It doesn’t matter how much I have, where I need to go or how I need to get there; when it comes to a night of great live music, I’ll blow my savings.

That kind of sacrificial financial instability doesn’t come easily.

Knowing that driving to L.A. for the third time this week to see Coldplay will rack up more than $100 in gas expenses doesn’t sit well on my conscience. Sure, I might feel a little bad about it when I get home and realize all I have left in my fridge are a few slices of American cheese and a jar of peanut butter. But the high of a great concert is worth it. I’ve learned how to adapt, how to survive and how to get through the financial hurdles of life while living off a very small amount of money.

As far as indulgences go, I can’t say I don’t have them or that I’m not a total slave to them. And it also doesn’t help that I’ve signed up for every Ticketmaster and Live Nation event calendar newsletter, which means I’m always planning my next concert, my next trip to L.A. and my next way to blow all the money I have. But when I’m standing in the middle of a sweaty pit of equally sweaty people all singing along to the “Ooooh ooooh oooooh ohhhh ohhhhhs” at the end of “Viva La Vida,” it doesn’t matter.

Besides, Top Ramen only costs a dollar.
