This is the basic premise of the sixth annual Dr. Henry L. Janssen Last Lecture Series. On Monday, Dr. Dipak Gupta, distinguished professor emeritus of political science, was this year’s honoree.

Gupta’s lecture was titled, “Random Walk: Life’s Journey of an Undisciplined Academic.”

During his 34 years at San Diego State, he has received many of the campus’ top awards, but he considered being a Last Lecture Honoree the highest among them.

Gupta is also known on campus for being a former director and one of the founders of the International Security and Conflict Resolution major, which is one of the fastestgrowing majors on campus.

Put on by the Honors Council, the lecture event was entirely sustainable. The Center for Regional Sustainability advised the council to use sustainable measures.

Ariel Rawson and Levi Lentz were the co-chairs of the Last Lecture Series and were an integral part of putting the event together.

Lentz, a mechanical engineering senior, was co-chair last year. As a future graduate student, he said he was impressed by the road Gupta took to the university.

“It was amazing to see someone who has gone through all the ropes, and what he really emphasized on was the fact that the individual choices don’t really matter so much as the overall goal.”

Gupta said he learned about himself and was able to put his life in perspective. He said he was moved by the Last Lecture Series.

“What an honor it is. I cannot imagine the ability to formally say goodbye or farewell or see you again to an institution which has been so important in my life,” Gupta said. “In fact, it has been a part in person of my very identity.”

All the former honorees were at the event. In particular, Henry L. Janssen, the first recipient, and last year’s honoree President Emeritus Stephen L. Weber, were present.

Beware Manchester’s hold on The U-T

Downtown developer and now owner of San Diego’s Union-Tribune newspaper, Doug Manchester, is a very powerful man. But did Manchester purchase The U-T to preserve journalism, or for more ethically dubious reasons? | THINKSTOCK

L

ocal entrepreneur Douglas Manchester insists that he be addressed as “Papa” Doug. He’s well known by this name. Ostensibly, this moniker distinguished him from his son, who is also named Doug. Of course, when one considers Manchester’s life, this nickname takes on a much clearer meaning.

Manchester has given a lot to the city of San Diego. He could rightfully be called the “Papa” of the San Diego waterfront, when it comes to the development of real estate. He built the Manchester Grand Hyatt, the tallest waterfront hotel on the West Coast. His buildings have served to define the San Diego skyline, and his mark will remain on the city long after he is gone. Manchester would have it no other way.

Recently, he purchased the region’s largest newspaper, The San Diego Union-Tribune. The timing of this acquisition, and the identity of the

Kenneth Leonard staff columnist man who acquired it, should lead San Diegans to ask a few questions.

Manchester has not made his political ideology a secret. He has openly contributed to the campaign of presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.

Manchester came under fire from Lesbian Gay Bisexual & Transsexual groups following a $125,000 donation to support Proposition 8. He’s an unapologetic conservative who has also donated heavily to various religious charities such as St. Vincent de Paul, Billy Graham Crusades and San Diego Diocesan Ministries throughout the last few decades. He has every right to throw his money behind causes he believes in, and I absolutely praise his charitable work. He has also donated to San Diego State. Our

school has a Manchester Hall because of Papa Doug.

Even if he is the nicest, most charitable guy in the world, the question responsible citizens have to ask when it comes to a devoted ideologue such as Manchester owning the local newspaper is this: Will Manchester and his lackey John Lynch protect the journalistic integrity of The U-T? If Manchester intends to use the newspaper to advance a conservative agenda, we should all have a huge problem with it, no matter what our political persuasions may be. Does he have the right to use the newspaper to say whatever he wants? I think so. Is it ethical to do so? Absolutely not. Manchester owns the newspaper, but I think it is fair to say San Diegans also have a stake in their local newspaper. We don’t own it as far as the bank is concerned, but the newspaper does (in some way) belong to the community.

It may seem speculative to question, but why did Manchester spend more than $100 million to buy the newspaper in the first place? The newspaper market is dwindling and people continue to look to alternative news sources. The staff of The U-T has dwindled as readership has declined. There is no money to be made in the newspaper and Manchester is a businessman, first and foremost. Buying The U-T makes no financial sense.

That is, until one considers the real estate value of the land The U-T offices sit on. We’re talking prime real estate, located in the heart of Mission Valley, conveniently positioned with easy access to multiple freeways. Could good ol’ Papa Doug be planning to develop that land?

The long-term value of that land is a sure thing, according to real estate analyst Gary London. “The greater risk is on the media part of the acquisition. The lesser risk is on the real estate,” according to London.

“But to be the real estate mogul and media mogul in this town, it had to be irresistible to him.”

It is definitely too early to know what Manchester’s plans for The U-T are. There have been indications he will not be shy about using the newspaper as a personal soapbox, such as his very pro-Jesus Christmas editorial, which left many non-Christian readers feeling quite excluded. Again, I support Manchester’s right to use his newspaper as a platform for his freedom of speech. The type of thing I object to is The U-T banning any comments that expressed disagreement with Manchester from the paper’s website. Papa Doug doesn’t like it when people exercise freedom of speech on his website, apparently.

Keep an eye on this, dear readers.

When reading the news, it is important to be aware of exactly where it is coming from.

uring the past few weeks, birth control and abortions have morphed from religious issues into political ones.

Washington, D.C., has become impregnated with suggestions about what is or isn’t best for women when it comes to their reproductive rights.

The loudest argument has seemed to be that women, for the most part, either shouldn’t have those rights or feel really guilty that they do.

Beth Elderkin managing editor versities, hospitals and nonprofits include birth control in their insurance plans has garnered a heated response: whether it be Republican Party presidential candidate Newt Gingrich calling the decision a “war on religious freedom,” or Rick Santorum-sponsoring millionaire Foster Friess telling NBC that, back in his day, girls would put aspirin “between their knees” for

contraception, as if he still thought that was a better idea.

But now that Obama has compromised on the mandate so churches themselves aren’t paying for the birth control, but rather their insurance companies, political attention has turned to the more controversial side of female reproductive rights: abortions.

As recently as last week, several states have passed severe anti-abortion laws. These laws aren’t illegalizing abortions, Roe v. Wade has made sure that can’t happen, but are instead making abortions even more terrifying and traumatic experiences than they already are, in order to scare women into not having them.

Many states have attempted to or succeeded in adopting the “look that fetus in the eye” method of anti-abortion law. According to the Guttmacher Institute, 20 states regulate provision of ultrasounds by abortion providers; seven of those states require each woman seeking an abortion to have an ultrasound and then be asked if she wants to see the image.

One state doesn’t even ask whether or not you want to see the fetus: Texas law requires abortion providers to show you the ultrasound image,

describe it in detail and then ask if you want to hear the fetal heartbeat.

Virginia recently tried to pass a bill that would have mandated transvaginal ultrasounds, or state-required insertion of a cold eight to 10-inch metal rod into you-know-where, for any Virginia woman seeking an abortion — even in cases of rape or incest. The ultrasound would then be kept in her medical file for seven years as proof of her baby-hating shame. The bill’s watered-down version, passed on Tuesday by the State Senate, removed the transvaginal but still kept the ultrasound.

What these laws and lawmakers fail to understand is the mental and psychological trauma they are inflicting on American citizens. As any woman knows, the connection between body and mind is incredibly strong. For the most part, women don’t see an abortion as being just like “getting your tonsils out,” as Illinois state representative and anti-abortion bill sponsor Joseph Lyons clumsily decried: It’s a traumatic, life-altering experience. So to add required ultrasounds, fetal heartbeats and other procedures to the experience is only adding more salt to an already well-coated wound.

It’s not helpful or inspiring, and it certainly isn’t going to make her have a divinely inspired change of heart. It’s just cruel.

In addition, these women are only half responsible for creating the life growing inside them. It takes two to tango horizontally; yet the laws mention nothing about fathers having to listen to a fetal heartbeat or look at an ultrasound picture. The shame of the pregnancy termination is solely placed on the shoulders of the woman, even if she has the father’s support.

I am not saying you have to support abortions. In fact, I support those who are against them. Because it’s part of the right to choose; not just for women, but for all Americans.

Still, I don’t support today’s antiabortion laws. It’s not because of what they’re trying to accomplish, but rather what they’re doing to try to accomplish it. By using shame, humiliation and psychological torture to scare women into keeping children they may not have the financial or emotional security to care for, politicians are shaming themselves and their constituents.

Everyone has a right to choose, but these laws are removing that choice and replacing it with force.

Obama’s mandate requires insurance companies to provide birth control pills, but it doesn’t make women take them. Likewise, abortion providers should be required to conduct ultrasounds, but shouldn’t make women have them. To force women into undergoing these procedures is a violation of civil liberties, as well as basic human decency.

These laws show disrespect for more than half the United States’ voting population and turn a personal life decision into a public tarand-feathering.

SDSU, offer more vegan items for Aztecs ’m going to be honest with you. I’ve attempted to become a vegetarian about a dozen times, and each time I’ve failed miserably. My sister, who has been a vegetarian for about eight years, has been hinting at me for a while now to make the switch, sometimes subtly and other times a little less so: “It’s just gross to me that you’re eating an actual carcass.”

Regardless of her good intentions, I always seem to have a laundry list of excuses to justify my belief that the grass cannot possibly be greener on the other side if that other side doesn’t have delicious cows grazing on it. But lately, my beloved list of excuses doesn’t seem to be holding much of an argument.

In response to my sister’s subtle prodding, I usually shrug my shoulders and say, “Fake meat won’t taste like the real thing, so I seriously doubt I’ll like it.” Quite frankly, this is one of the biggest misconceptions about vegetarian meals. Of course you’ll come across food you don’t like. But to generalize all meatless items as bland and tasteless is absurd. Depending on the brand, you can find food that smells, tastes and even looks like real meat products. I know this for a fact because the smell of my sister’s faux chicken strips frying on the stove can drag me out of bed. Even the crispiness of the chicken usually prompts me to snatch a piece or two when she’s not looking and shamelessly, yet conspicuously, stuff them in my own sandwich.

Now onto one of the bigger questions: “If I eliminate meat from my diet, what else am I going to eat?” To be honest, such reasoning would have been plausible about a decade ago when finding quality meat-free products was a genuine challenge. But today? There’s no excuse. Throughout the past 10 to 15 years, increased awareness of the dark realities of factory farming, in addition to the immense pressure put forth by health officials to address our nation’s ominous obesity

epidemic, has contributed to a considerable surge in the vegetarian food market. Forget scouring the Internet for a specialty store near you. At your local Vons, for example, expect to find a wide variety of vegetarian food options, from faux chicken nuggets to faux ground beef (which is delicious in spaghetti).

But if the selection at your local grocery stores isn’t particularly impressive, I have good news for you, my fellow Aztecs. Peta2, the youth division of the infamous People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals organization, has plans for San Diego State: create more vegetarian and vegan dining options for students. In fact, you might have

seen one of the representatives collecting signatures for a petition to do just that. The goal was to collect 2,000 signatures before handing the petition to the director of SDSU Dining Services, Paul Melchior. “A measly petition,” I hear you scoff.

Skeptical, are we?

Just last month, a similar approach was taken at the University of California San Diego, where peta2 successfully collected 3,000 signatures in support of creating additional vegetarian and vegan-friendly food options on campus. The outcome?

UCSD wasted no time in unveiling Roots, “the university’s first exclusively vegetarian / vegan eatery and lounge.” But it’s not the only one.

Michigan State, The University of North Texas, Duke University and Oklahoma City University are just several of the colleges that have complied with student demands for more vegetarian and vegan dining options, according to an article by USA Today. Believe it or not, around 20 percent of U.S. college students are vegetarians, according to a study by the National Restaurant Association and the National Association of College and University Food Services. However, if you’re indifferent to the 9 billion animals slaughtered each year in the U.S. for food, then consider making the switch for your own health.

“Many studies have shown that vegetarians seem to have a lower risk of obesity, coronary heart disease (which causes heart attack), high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus and some forms of cancer,” according to the American Heart Association. Such diets are “also usually lower than nonvegetarian diets in total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol.” Everyone has sudden realizations when they stop and think, “I think it’s time for something different.” So why not make this your new lifestyle change? You have to start somewhere, so start today.

Sidenote: It’s important to note that a vegetarian diet, while beneficial in many ways, is one that requires monitoring. In order to ensure you are consuming the proper vitamins and minerals, either meet with a dietician or set an appointment for free nutrition counseling at SDSU’s Student Health Services.

Performance powders bear drugged effects Workout junkies get Jack3d on shady supplements Alyssa Zickenberg contributor Take a spoonful of white powder, mix it in a couple ounces of water, drink and wait for the body to tingle, heart rate to spike, energy to explode and muscles to swell.

These are not side effects of the latest street drug. They are bodily reactions to a more than $28 billion industry of pre-workout supplements being sold on shelves across America, which claim certain results often supported by athletes, bodybuilders and gym rats who contend the experience of unparalleled workout boosts.

Jack3d and OxyElite Pro are two of the most popular nitric-oxide supplements taken as pre-workout boosters. Jack3d, which has sold more than a billion doses, claims its product can dramatically increase consumers’ endurance, stamina, focus, desire, strength and abilities during workouts, allowing them to effortlessly achieve fitness goals.

However, consumers distracted by the promise of such alluring results often overlook research and safety concerns related to these products.

The United States Army is currently investigating the cases of two soldiers who died last year from heart attacks during fitness exercises. Both tested positive for 1,3dimethylamylamine, commonly

referred to as DMAA, according to toxicology reports. There have also been reports of liver and kidney failures, seizures, loss of consciousness and rapid heart rate from other military personnel and users of these supplements. All products containing DMAA, including Jack3d, have been removed from military base stores until the completion of a U.S. Army safety review.

Because Jack3d and similar products are sold as dietary supplements, instead of as drugs, the Food and Drug Administration is not required by federal law to conduct premarket approval. The FDA’s loose regulation of supplements puts consumers’ safety and health at risk. A few professional sports organizations, such as the World Anti-Doping Agency, have taken a stand and listed DMAA

as a banned stimulant for athletes.

Also, the Canadian government health agency has classified DMAA as a drug, prohibiting it from being sold in any products.

In addition to warnings about DMAA, the FDA’s website states it has “identified an emerging trend where over-the-counter products, frequently represented as dietary supplements, contain hidden active

ingredients that could be harmful.

Consumers may unknowingly take products laced with varying quantities of approved prescription drug ingredients, controlled substances and untested and unstudied pharmaceutically active ingredients.”

There is little conclusive evidence available to either prove or disprove the potential dangers of pre-workout supplements, as extensive research about long-term usage of such products has not been conducted. The producer of Jack3d, USPlabs, stands behind its product, claiming it poses no serious health risks as long as consumers use it as recommended.

However, many medical experts and officials still warn against the supplement’s use and widespread availability. They’re calling it a new ephedra; a dietary supplement banned by the FDA in 2004 after the deaths of several professional athletes.

“If negative affects are being shown in the (products) with DMAA it seems like a pretty strong link,” San Diego State professor of nutritional science Mark Kern said.

Some ingredients in Jack3d, such as creatine and beta-alanine, are safe and can support fitness goals.

However, this does not qualify it as an ideal nutritional option.

“Powders are fine for convenience, but real food is the way to go because you get other nutrients provided,” Kern said.

Consumers can make more informed decisions by educating themselves about of the unregulated nature of the market. For healthier results, adopt safe habits and doses when using pre-workout supplements.

DA: Are you involved in any community organizations such as charity or church?

EH: My primary focus for charitable giving is SDSU. I hope others in the community, of course, can be encouraged by that.

DA: Do you have any advice for current students at SDSU? EH: Stay optimistic, draw your own course, take control of your own destiny and understand where you want to go and what are the things you need to do to accomplish your goals. And have a good time while you’re here.

DA: Going back to the biggest challenge you faced, how do you think one should handle their toughest challenges?

Last week, Staff Writer Arturo Garcia spoke with San Diego State President Elliot Hirshman to find out more about the university’s new leader.

The Daily Aztec: First I was planning on going to the past. It’s your first year at Yale — what music are you listening to?

President Elliot Hirshman: I’m pretty sure it was the Talking Heads here (laughing).

DA: What was your favorite hobby back then?

“I want to help the campus build community so people feel supported and at home and part of the Aztec family when they are here ...”

DA: Traveling a couple of years later, it’s your first year as SDSU president. What music are you listening to currently?

DA: Continuing on the personal side, could you name a few things about yourself that most people do not know?

EH: I’ve actually been listening to the soundtrack of “Country Strong” a lot, which I’ve really been enjoying.

EH : At this point, I’m not sure. But I guess people may not know that I’ve been married for quite a few years, that I have two children: Wendy, who is a junior in college and Nathan who is a freshman at the University of Virginia.

DA: What is your hobby now?

EH: Oh, I would say sports in general.

DA: What was your biggest challenge during your college years?

EH : That’s an interesting question.

Probably managing financial challenges, like tuition, student loans, working at the same time as going to college.

EH: No hobbies at this point, only focusing on San Diego State University.

DA: And your biggest professional challenge today?

DA: Did you have a model or idol whom you aspired to be when you were growing up?

EH: The biggest professional challenge is probably the budget situation that California faces.

EH: Don Maynard. He was a receiver for the New York Jets. I thought I was going to be a professional football

player at this time. At one point in time he was the leading all-time receiver in the NFL, but he’s not as well-known now.

DA: How do you keep a healthy work and life balance?

EH: I think it’s important to stay in touch and keep communicating with the people who are closest to you.

And take breaks from your work schedule to do things that are particularly enjoyable for you.

DA: So maintain a strong support from people around you?

EH: Yeah, certainly reaching out and forming relationships with the people around is very important for maintaining that work / life balance.

DA: Are there any political or social issues you feel passionate about?

EH: Sure, sustainability is an important issue in terms of environmental concerns. The political divisiveness that we’re facing in trying to address that is very important. Solid energy policy, health care policy — those are things that are very important to me

EH: I wanted to elaborate on one aspect in addition to the budget challenges. I think one of the big challenges here is in how we can help in a big community, make it supportive of everyone who is on campus — student, faculty and staff. I often say that in terms of how do we help make a big community small, so that’s a challenge I think the campus faces as well as obviously the specific budget issues.

DA: You want the campus to feel more like a small campus so people would help one another and support each other?

EH: I want to help the campus build community so people feel supported and at home and part of the Aztec family when they are here on campus.

DA: During President Weber’s time there was an increase in academic stature, unprecedented student success, community engagement and campus growth. That’s what his administration is known for. What would you like your administration to be known for?

Center provides starting point for Aztecs AMY WILLAMS CONTRIBUTOR

For years, the Entrepreneurial Management Center at San Diego State has helped students turn fledgling ideas into full-blown innovative business ventures. Students can go to the EMC when they need help formulating a business plan, building their résumé or when they simply don’t know where else to turn for business advice.

The EMC was founded in 1987 by professor emeritus Darryl Mitton and former Dean of the College of Business Administration Allan Bailey.

Academically integrating the center was then developed by professor Sanford Ehrlich and current EMC Executive Director Dr. Alex DeNoble.

The EMC is home to innovative thinkers from the College of Business, but also from a variety of majors across campus. According to EMC Director Bernhard Schroeder, about 70 percent of students who

visit the center are not business majors. It mentors students from the film, science and journalism departments too; anyone in need of entrepreneurial advice can be counseled.

In addition to guidance, the EMC provides internship opportunities and real-life experiences that give students a chance to practice what they learn in their classes.

The center has mentored many students who have gone on to create nationally recognized companies: Wing Lam of Wahoo’s Fish Tacos, Ralph Rubio of Rubio’s

Restaurants Inc. and Thom McElroy of Volcom are some of the biggest names to graduate from SDSU. One of the most recent success stories to stem from the EMC is currently available on campus. Shake Smart was founded last year and is already a popular stop for students.

there put marketing strategies behind it ... [the EMC] helped with [that] part of it,” Reiman said. That sped up the time it took them to get Shake Smart up and running because they were able to use the staff’s knowledge and guidance rather than having to learn hard lessons from personal experience. The result? Gelfand placed fourth in the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards last year, and Shake Smart will represent SDSU in the 2012 Venture Challenge, an

international business plan competition hosted here on campus. Shake Smart is also working on expanding its business into Horton Plaza and other school campuses.

The message the EMC wants to spread to SDSU is that anybody can be an entrepreneur. According to Gelfand, “The difference between an entrepreneur from everybody else is ... taking that idea and making it a reality. We’re not these Albert Einstein people who thought of this crazy idea. We just had an idea and we put in the hard work to do it.”

Guardian scholars excel The fish taco king reminisces

One student’s life showcases vitality of the program

Before attending San Diego State, James D. Hake, a 19-year-old native from Mount Shasta, had not planned a future because he lived day-to-day in survival mode. A violent home life with his biological parents caused him to run away and seek refuge with his friends and extended family.

The additional money would allow more students to enter the program, hire more staff, provide more scholarships and give them opportunities to study abroad, he said. In order to accept more students, the program is lowering the GPA requirement from 3.0 to 2.5.

The Campaign for SDSU recently reached $300 million in fundraising with the help of 34,000 donors. Its overall goal is $500 million.

Director of Media Relations and New Media Greg Block said Guardian Scholars are incredible students.

“These are students who had extraordinary circumstances and

... there are about 6,500 youth in the foster care system in San Diego County. Every year, 300 students leave the system when they turn 18.

Hake, now a recreation and tourism management sophomore, was given a lot of responsibility as a young child. He would work on his parents’ property tending the land and caring for the animals.

He avoided going home by becoming heavily involved in school and participating in outdoor sports.

Hake applied to SDSU, but was denied. However, after insistently working with Equal Opportunity Program representatives, he was eventually accepted into SDSU through the Guardian Scholars Program.

This program provides comprehensive support to assist students who are wards of the court, under legal guardianship or unaccompanied homeless youth. It also gives participants year-round room and board and academic mentoring.

As a ward of the court, he left his family and was placed in the guardianship of the Hake family, who eventually became his adoptive parents.

“I’ve lost a lot of family relationships through running away, but I wouldn’t be where I’m at if I didn’t,” he said. “Sometimes you have to sacrifice some things you love.”

Recently, the Guardian Scholars Program received $4 million because of the efforts of The Campaign for SDSU, which is the first universitywide fundraising campaign.

Hake said he appreciates donors supporting the program because it gives opportunities to individuals who have the odds against them.

“I literally wouldn’t be here, they got me into college and they’ve given me so much. All the people I’ve met, all the connections I’ve made,” Hake said.

According to the Guardian Scholars website, there are about 6,500 youth in the foster care system in San Diego County. Every year, 300 students leave the system when they turn 18.

There are more than 170 Guardian Scholars, a significant increase from only three years ago when the program began with 11 members.

Students, parents, faculty and staff, alumni and corporations donate money. SDSU President Elliot Hirshman said donors are not only investing in the future of students, but the community as a whole.

“We are very fortunate that our donors recognize the extraordinary abilities and dedication of our students, faculty and staff. They understand that an investment in our educational, research and community engagement programs benefits our students, our region and the broader society,” Hirshman said.

Block said the school is tapping into the 260,000 SDSU alumni, 60 percent of whom live in San Diego.

Hirshman said every donation counts and every donation has an impact.

“Numerous small donations to a department or program accumulate to have a large impact, and supporters who make small donations today will often make larger donations in the future when they see the positive impact of their donation,” Hirshman said. “Each donation is an essential part of building a culture of philanthropy and growing our endowment so it can support the important work of our students, faculty and staff.”

The larger donations involve talking to prospective donors about the school, its recognizable programs and meeting with SDSU leaders to reinforce the school’s greatness.

Hirshman said the Guardian Scholars Program provides special opportunities to these students formerly in the foster care system.

“I have been fortunate to get to know a number of our Guardian Scholars over the last year,” he said.

“They are talented, determined, optimistic young men and women who deserve our support and who, with this support, will make important contributions as future leaders.”

Hake said he’s encountered many obstacles in his life, but if he had not been pushed by the Hake family to succeed, it would have been even harder. Individuals should be persistent and hope for the best, he said.

“Don’t hold back because you don’t know what’s going to happen when you give your best, you could fail, failure is always an option, unfortunately it is, but you could succeed,” he said.

After he graduates from SDSU in 2014, Hake said he’s going to the University of Utah to get his master’s and doctorate. He eventually plans to own a ski resort.

What began as a love story between a San Diego State graduate and fish tacos blossomed into a successful franchise with 200 restaurants in five different states.

Rubio was three years out of college with a liberal studies degree with an emphasis in psychology, and he was soon to turn 28.

“Failure was not an option,” he said.

“If I turned 30 and this thing flopped I would have been a failure.”

It would be satisfying to believe his love for fish tacos was enough to bring the chain restaurant overnight success, but Rubio doesn’t necessarily agree.

“I spent countless Saturday nights washing pots and pans,” he said. “And I would be thinking to myself, ‘What the hell are you doing?’”

It was January of 1982 when he opened the first Rubio’s in Pacific Beach on Mission Bay Drive, taking the place of an old hamburger stand.

“It is still there!” Rubio said in an uplifted mood.

“I would take a nap in the restaurant mid-afternoon because there was so little business and I had time to do that. If someone came in and rung the bell, I would just splash some water onto my face and serve them. They would have no idea I was taking a nap in the kitchen.”

Rubio’s father, who coincidentally started a business in which he imported fish out of Baja California, partnered with him after he worked as a waiter at The Old Spaghetti Factory and gained managing experience at the Harbor House Restaurant in Seaport Village.

Therefore, it took time for customers to get adjusted to the idea of fish inside of a corn tortilla. It was another two years after the inauguration that Rubio’s became successful.

“Starting a business is very risky,” he said.

“The fact that we pulled it out on our first try was amazing.”

Now married with two children, a son, 22, and a daughter, 20, Rubio is supportive enough to allow them their own career choices, but acknowledges great potential for them to become entrepreneurs and continue with the family business.

His advice to college students is “It’s not as important to study a specific discipline. Just learn for the sake of learning and go where your interests take you and follow your heart and your brain that way.”

The 30th anniversary of the Rubio’s restaurant chain is next January and as this important date approaches, the advice of the founder’s father to him when he was 12 years old becomes more vivid.

“Son, if you ever get the chance to start your own business, you should do that.”

Professor Seth Mallios, Department of Anthropology chair director at San Diego State, has been in every building and ceiling on campus; even in the water tank inside Hardy Tower.

Mallios has gone above and beyond teaching in the classroom. He is currently working on six projects simultaneously and he is equally excited about each one.

Mallios’ first project is taking inventory of San Diego’s cemeteries.

“The weird thing is that San Diego doesn’t necessarily value its history. It is the most forward-thinking city I’ve ever been in that often will develop over its past,” said Mallios.

According to Mallios, Interstate 15 is placed on top of a burial ground.

This is something he would never see happen at his former home in Jamestown, Virginia.

His second project is a five season-long dig on top of Palomar Mountain, excavating Nate Harrison’s home. Harrison was born an enslaved African-American, and died as a land owner.

The Whaley House in Old Town, San Diego is Mallios’ third project.

For the past five summers, students have gone with Mallios to the site, in order to uncover some of the

roll at SDSU. He picked up this idea after saving a mural from being torn down at Aztec Center. After much convincing and a cost of about $50,000, Mallios was able to save the 1970 mural of the brightly colored Aztec warriors rocking out.

According to Mallios, Montezuma Hall was a hotspot for rock ‘n’ roll. Legends such as Bob Dylan, Grateful Dead, Ray Charles and Guns and Roses all once graced the stage of SDSU’s very own Aztec Center.

Mallios’ final project nearing completion is writing the history of SDSU. “It drives me crazy when people say there is no tradition at this institution, because it has immense tra-

ditions,” Mallios said. “It has histories, it is legendary.”

In his book, he said he will emphasize the rich history of SDSU, which many would never suspect.

For example, leading to the Mediterranean garden, there is a reptile footprint that dates back 225 million years . There is also a World War II bomb shelter underneath the old administration building.

Mallios said the most important moment in SDSU history was when President John F. Kennedy visited campus six months before his assassination. According to Mallios, Kennedy honored the college with legitimacy to start pursuing doctorate programs.

Next year will be the 50th anniversary of Kennedy’s appearance.

After Kennedy was assassinated, the campus put in plans to build a reflective pool in front of Hepner Hall. This pool of remembrance was budgeted in at the same time as Love Library, but for various reasons, the design never went through.

All of these secrets, and more of SDSU’s history, will be found in Mallios’ book, “Hail Montezuma: The Hidden Treasures of San Diego State.”

The book is set to be published and available next February.

Mallios wants SDSU’s professors, administration, and students to truly understand their university’s rich history. He said he himself has such an appreciation for the campus and all of San Diego.

“This book is just my way of saying thanks for having me,” Mallios said.

It may seem like Mallios has his hands full with a variety of timeconsuming projects, but he said he was more than happy to meet the challenge.

“It’s a great problem to have, you know, beicited to come to work,” Mallios said.

San Diego State welcomes incoming freshmen and all admitted students to Explore SDSU Open House 2012.

Explore SDSU offers prospective students and their families an opportunity to tour the campus while attending an information fair and academic program workshops, to experience what life as an Aztec could be like firsthand.

Jordan Pfaff, an incoming out-ofstate freshman said he’s looking forward to attending the Explore SDSU event and visiting the campus.

“I’m excited to learn more about SDSU and see everything the school has to offer,” Pfaff said.

The information fair will offer booths from many clubs, organizations, colleges and departments.

Apart from major-affiliated clubs, Associated Students and other student organizations, such as the Honors Council and Greek Life, will also be represented at the fair.

Students interested in learning more about available majors or admissions have the opportunity to attend lectures and workshops, which will be held throughout the day. These workshops will provide information important to all prospective students in helping to decide if SDSU is the right choice.

For prospective out-of-state students, SDSU will be holding a PreExplore event the day before the Explore SDSU Open House. Students who attend this event will get to experience some of the activities offered at the Open House before anybody else.

The Pre-Explore SDSU Welcome Reception is strictly for students and families visiting from outside California. The event will be hosted by an admissions counselor who will explain the enrollment process as well as what to expect from the next day’s Explore SDSU event.

SDSU is also welcoming alumni back to campus during the event, in celebration and recognition of their Aztec roots. There will be live entertainment during the entire event, which takes place between 9 a.m.

San Diego State graduates have become CEOs, presidents, founders and leaders in their communities.

Many run large companies, have built businesses from scratch and have become influential in every aspect of their lives. Because of this increasing leadership by the alumni community, SDSU has created a way to track its graduates and their accomplishments, quantifying the impact of SDSU’s leadership in the community.

Of the 260,000 living SDSU graduates, the Aztec Leadership Network records notable SDSU alumni in San Diego. It is a collective map that shows where SDSU graduates have created businesses and become leaders in their communities.

Currently, the map only shows graduates who reside in the United States, but the creators plan to eventually show the global reach of SDSU leadership on the online network.

They hope people will use this network to make contacts and do business with fellow Aztecs.

Greg Block, director of media relations and new media at SDSU, is helping to develop the vast resource of alumni in the network.

According to Block, the network has two main goals.

“The first is to really show the strength of the network that we, as Aztecs, have throughout the community, as leaders of businesses and organizations in a variety of industries,” Block said. “The second goal is to encourage SDSU alumni to support their fellow Aztecs.”

At each weekly meeting, Neukum and Terman will be focusing on one particular topic, such as the history of how humans have viewed animals, from early history to present day. They want members to speak freely and express their beliefs in an environment where they do not have to worry about feeling uncomfortable or alienated.

Not only will the group be teaching its members the history of animal welfare, but it will also have them participate in peaceful protests in San Diego.

On Feb. 18, SAA joined PETA to peacefully protest in front of SeaWorld. They held signs and passed out flyers in an attempt to “educate people on why it’s bad to have animals in captivity.”

“It is inhuman to have whales not swimming nearly as much as they would if they were in the wild,” Neukum said. “Whales swim about 300 miles a day, and when they are in a tank nose to tail, you can see how that would be an issue for the whale. It cuts their life in half and people need to know what’s happening right in our own backyard. It’s a perfect opportunity for students to go and speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.”

Terman and Neukum recently teamed up with peta2 to incorporate more vegan and vegetarian foods in on-campus dining options. They received 2,000 signatures and are now waiting to present the idea to SDSU’s Dining Services.

“We have gotten a lot more positive reactions that negative reactions,” Terman said.

Neukum said it is a “huge move for vegan and vegetarian students to have more options, or even just for people who want to have more healthy food options available on campus.”

“Many of our alumni and supporters believe in San Diego State and in the competence of their fellow Aztecs,” Herrick said.

Around 60 percent of SDSU graduates stay in San Diego, many becoming leaders in their fields. The main goal of the network is to not only prove this, but also show the strength of SDSU and its connection to this region and others. As far as San Diego County companies go, Aztecs are the CEOs of at least 100, presidents of more than 300 and founders of more than 50 of them.

According to the Aztec Leadership Network’s website, “SDSU’s economic impact accounts for 36 percent of the entire CSU’s impact to the state, sustains more than 9,000 jobs in the region, more than 11,400 jobs statewide and generates more than $62 million in local taxes and nearly $86.7 million in state tax revenue.”

To be added to the network, graduates can simply identify themselves on the website, according to Herrick.

“We need to collectively realize and to collectively act upon the reality that San Diego State provides a great education,” Herrick said.

“We want people to understand that when you earn a degree from San Diego State University, you are joining an incredible group of people who are successful leaders in a variety of industries,” Block said. “We want people to be proud of their alma mater and we hope that this is yet another way for them to do that.”

This year, San Diego State has gained a new club on campus called Student Action for Animals. Its primary goal is to inform the student body about animal rights and to promote animal welfare. SDSU sophomores Rochelle Terman and Amber Neukum are co-presidents and cofounders of the club.

Student Action for Animals not only wants to inform students about animal welfare, but also about “what is going on in the animal industry; whether it be circuses, factory farms, SeaWorld, things that are going on locally and anything that is happening on a bigger level,” Terman said.

The founders initially started the club because they noticed there wasn’t a visible community on campus for animal-rights enthusiasts.

“We know that there was one a couple of years ago but it just dwindled away. We knew that there would be some kind of interest in animal welfare and protesting,” Neukum said.

According to the founders, the club is not meant to make others feel uncomfortable, but instead to provide its members and nonmembers with information about vegetarianism or veganism, how society treats animals and how students can make a difference in promoting animal rights.

SAA works with various organizations such as the Animal Protection and Rescue League, PETA, peta2 and Born Free USA. It intends to create a fun, informal atmosphere within the club, making their meetings casual and laidback. The club promotes interactivity and wants to provide its members with a friendly atmos-

ans. She stressed that student veterans are all one big community and this initiative is supported by SVO. Kozak said she is working hard to reach out to women who may benefit from having a stronger support network and building friendships.

“I know a lot of women and students I’ve talked to; we don’t want to be seen as separate because we fought really hard to be seen as equals,” Kozak said. “We are all one big community, I just thought it would be good to say, women are veterans as well.”

A new women veterans initiative is collaborating with the Veterans Center at San Diego State as an integration to help raise awareness.

Dr. Aaron Bruce, chief diversity officer at SDSU, said he is very supportive and interested in the Women Veterans Initiative. He said the energy and dedication women veterans bring to SDSU is excellent.

“It is important not to overlook the service and sacrifice women have made throughout the history of our country,” Bruce said. “Our student veterans, both men and women, are outstanding leaders who contribute positively to our campus and community.”

The initiative’s purpose is to unite and inform the female veteran population at SDSU about resources available both on and off campus.

Tess Banko, president of SDSU’s Student Veteran Organization, said SVO works toward maintaining a culturally inclusive environment for all campus veterans. She said an individual, whether male or female, becomes part of the family once he or she wears a uniform of the United States of America.

“The Veteran Center’s campus Women Veterans Initiative is important because it provides the opportunity for increased access to resources and support for those who seek it,” Banko said.

Angela Kozak, a speech pathology senior, started this initiative last fall.

Gee Bwinika shines at San Diego State EDWARD HENDERSON SENIOR STAFF WRITER

Gee Bwinika is a star. His million-dollar smile, outgoing personality, eccentric fashion sense and flashy dance moves warrant that title.

However, his most endearing quality resides in a humility and sense of purpose that are beyond his years. While the Congo native has accomplished a lot during his time as a film, television and new media major at San Diego State, his life could have taken a horrible turn at an early age.

Bwinika’s life in the Congo was full of privilege and opportunity. His father was a successful business man and also excelled in the political arena. Bwinika, however, showed little interest in pursuing a traditional career path despite pressure from his parents.

“My parents wanted me to be become a lawyer, doctor or a business man but I loved to dance,” he said. “In our culture, dancing was considered street stuff because there was no future in it.”

When Bwinika was 10, he ran away from home to become a child soldier for Laurent-Désiré Kabila’s regime during his rise to presidential power in the Congo.

“I thought it was cool because they paid 50 dollars a month, I got a gun and having a gun meant you had power.”

Bwinika’s father eventually found out and used his political influence to remove him from the regime just before he was sent off for training. His parents decided it was best to send him to the U.S. to live with one of his sisters who was residing in San Diego.

When Bwinika arrived, he didn’t speak English and kept to himself.

“I was very shy. I was friendly whenever people approached me, but I missed my family a lot.”

That all changed when Bwinika attended high school. He eventually found an outlet to display his dancing talent with a local team called “Elevate.” The team choreographed and performed dances for homeless shelters, children’s hospitals and other nonprofit organizations across the country.

Bwinika also excelled in sports and, as his English improved, he got involved in student government and became very popular around campus.

“I learned English by watching a lot of movies with subtitles. It really sparked my passion for multimedia and film.”

“His journey is so fascinating that editing is only one facet in the diamond that he is.”

In celebration of SDSU Month and all things Aztec, San Diego State will hold a video contest challenging students, faculty, alumni and friends to create a video expressing why they believe leadership starts at SDSU. In relation to the current SDSU commercial that features prominent Aztecs doing the “I Believe” chant, the video should show passion, leadership and express that exceptional leaders emerge from SDSU. The first-place winner will receive a trip for two to SDSU’s first football game against the University of Washington. Bwinika took that passion and enrolled in multimedia and videoediting classes. He quickly caught on to the editing programs and was promoted to the advanced course. While on a campus visit to SDSU during his senior year, Bwinika met a reporter from ABC Channel 10 and helped edit a story he was working on. That encounter eventually led to a job offer from Fox 5 San Diego.

Through hard work, he gained the respect of his colleagues. Emmy Award-winning news anchor Kathleen Bade was among those colleagues. “He’s such a good editor and

has a talent like I’ve never seen,” Bade said. “His journey is so fascinating that editing is only one facet in the diamond that he his.”

Bade wasn’t the only one who noticed his talent. Troy Hirsch, host of Fox 5’s weekend night sports show “Game On,” utilized Bwinika’s dancing talent to help fill time on the program.

“I saw Gee editing film of someone freestyle dancing and I thought it was pretty incredible,” Hirsch said. “When I asked if it was him he said, ‘Yeah man, dancing is a sport.’”

Hirsch gave Bwinika a spot on his show and titled the segment “Dancing is a Sport.”

“When you see the segment, he’s not just showcasing his dancing ability, but his editing ability as well,” Hirsch said.

“He is such a hard worker and we’re going to miss him when he graduates and moves on to bigger things.”

Bwinika is currently developing a documentary through his McNair Fellowship on children living in the Mugunga Refugee Camp is his native Congo. “These children have lost everything,” Bwinika said. “I wanted to tell this story not only to raise funds to help these children, but to develop programs that will teach them trades so they can support themselves once they grow up.”

On Feb. 10, San Diego State lost accomplished religious studies scholar Dr. G. Ray Jordan, Jr. to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or as it is more commonly known: Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Jordan was born on Jan. 13, 1926 in North Carolina. The son of a progressive non-segregationist Methodist minister, Jordan grew up amidst threats of violence toward his family.

After completing degrees in both religion and psychology at Duke University in 1945, Jordan went on to Yale Divinity School to become a Methodist minister like his father. He lost interest, however, after being influenced by the writings of Aldous Huxley and Gerald Heard, as well as the communal living space at Trabuco College.

Jordan moved out to the commune to further his education, and subsequently studied Japanese Zen with renowned scholar D. T. Suzuki at Claremont University in the early 1950s. Jordan then graduated with

a master’s degree in 1952, and eventually received a doctorate in religion from the University of Southern California in 1957.

In the early 1960s, Jordan published articles in both the journal “Psychologia” and “The Journal of the American Academy of Religion” on the subjects of LSD, mystical experiences and Zen practices.

In 1966, Jordan was offered a position at San Diego State to establish the Department of Religious Studies, which he chaired for many years. He was known at SDSU for opening his home twice a week for Zen meditation to anyone interested. The sessions took place on Tipton Street, near SDSU, on Tuesday and Thursday nights between 7 and 9 p.m.

Jordan’s daughters recall his kindness and compassion, and remember fondly how he would rescue injured birds near Adams Humanities and nurse them back to health.

Jordan eventually retired from SDSU in 1996, but continued his practice of meditation up until his death.

Jordan is survived by his wife Connie, as well as his three daughters and numerous grandchildren. A memorial was held in his honor at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Agape House on Hardy Avenue.

Every year, San Diego State applauds its faculty and professors who have made great strides in scholarship and research through the Albert W. Johnson University Research Lecture. The series was created in 1991 to honor Johnson, an SDSU dean and provost. Since then, lectures have covered a range of academic topics such as stem cell research and late-speaking toddlers.

This year’s event, “Learning to Fly: Understanding the Basis of Muscle Function and Disease,” will host Dr. Sanford Bernstein. Bernstein has been a professor in SDSU’s Department of Biology for 28 years and has received several awards highlighting his superior work in both teaching and scientific research.

Bernstein said he has been at SDSU for this long because he is fond of the “very collegiate atmosphere where people collaborate and interact in a positive way.”

His current research focuses on the mutation of the important protein molecule myosin, “a molecular motor of muscle (that) is actually what changes shape and allows the muscle to contract.” When the molecule mutates, it creates potential cardiovascular and skeletal muscle defects that could be very disabling, if not fatal.

“We’re trying to understand how muscles work at the molecular l e v e l , ” Bernstein said.

Because testing on humans is dangerous and difficult, Bernstein uses fruit flies for his experiments. He and his team inject mutated myosin into the fly embryo, examine the mutation’s effects on the fly and test different methods of “fly therapeutics” through drugs or gene manipulation. All of this is done to expand the information scientists have about several human muscle conditions.

This could lead to finding cures for these disabilities.

Even with all these pursuits, Bernstein is much more than just fruit flies and the scientific method; he is a leader in the SDSU faculty.

When Bernstein was appointed as a department head, he remained active in his research, effectively juggling both roles. “Clearly, science has benefitted always from bringing in people with different orientations,” Bernstein said. “Helping a student who traditionally, from a family background that wouldn’t encourage venturing into science or even consider anything about going to graduate school, watching them blossom while working in the lab as an undergraduate and then go on to graduate school.

“You know that’s truly the best contribution I could make,” he said.

He also noted another “amazing strength” of SDSU. “While some people might say that it’s not an elite place where only the top of the financial and educational echelons go, it really is very rich in terms of the variation in the students and their inherent drive toward success,” he said.

This year’s lecture will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. on March 16 in Arts and Letters 201.

After scoring six points in overtime against Wyoming, then dropping 31 points and 16 rebounds against Colorado State, Franklins scored 18 points and 12 rebounds against the Broncos.

Franklin’s most impressive play came in the second half. Following the ball off a miss, Franklin grabbed the rebound and dunked on three Boise State players.

The leap on the dunk by Franklin can be used a metaphor for his play this year. He has made a leap in his play, becoming one of the most improved players in college basketball and he is making his case for MW Player of the Year.

Franklin’s ability to improve in such a short time has even surprised Fisher.

“I really didn’t (think he was going to be this good this fast),” Fisher told KOGO 600 AM’s Ted Leitner after the game. “He is extremely competitive, very strong willed, stubborn in a positive way, wills himself to do stuff and does not let up. He’s got a mindset that has allowed him to prosper.”

Antonio Morales sports editor It’s no secret: Wins are hard to come by on the road in the Mountain West Conference. But last night the San Diego State men’s basketball team made it look as easy as it gets.

Powered by 18 points and 12 rebounds from sophomore guard Jamaal Franklin, SDSU defeated the Boise State Broncos 66-53.

It was the third straight win for the Aztecs, who had lost three straight games prior to their current winning streak.

The game was pretty much over by halftime as SDSU built up a 16-point lead heading into the locker rooms.

For a team that has struggled on the road lately, with three straight losses on the road prior to tonight, the 16point lead was a welcome sign. The comfortable margin of victory was the first in a long time for the Aztecs, and it pleased their head coach.

TCU on Saturday, it will clinch at least a share of the MW regular-season championship. It will also get the top seed in the conference tournament.

The Aztecs beat TCU 83-73 the last time the two teams played, but TCU has been a different team at home.

The Horned Frogs have beaten both UNLV and New Mexico in Waco.

“They’ve beaten everybody going in there, so we’ve got one to go,” Fisher said. “I’m so proud that we are where we are, we’ve got one game to go with a chance to get at least a piece of the conference title.”

It’s a scenario many people didn’t see coming in the preseason, as the Aztecs were picked to finish third in the conference. It’s a scenario many people didn’t see coming a week and a half ago when SDSU was two games out of first place.

SDSU celebrates title on Senior Night Ruben Meza staff writer Last night, the San Diego State women’s basketball team proved why defense wins championships.

The Aztecs (22-6, MW 12-2) watched the Mountain West 2012 regularseason Championship banner unveil from the rafter as they, along with many students who stormed the court, walked their way towards the west end of Viejas Arena to cut down the nets.

“I didn’t tell them about the banner,” SDSU head coach Beth Burns said. “That was a surprise. Our party would’ve flopped if we lost the game.”

Burns wanted her team to keep focus for Senior Night, and it paid off as the Aztecs defeated the Boise State Broncos 58-41.

Junior guard Courtney Clements led SDSU with 22 points, while junior guard Chelsea Hopkins contributed 12 points and seven assists.

Hopkins, a transfer out of Duke University, reflected on the year: “I knew I could be apart of something special, I wanted to hang a banner.”

The Aztecs went on a 23-10 run in the first half to create some comfortable separation. SDSU continued to hold its ground, limiting Boise State (14-15, MW 5-9) to just three field goals in the first half, doubling the Broncos total 28-14 heading into the break.

The Broncos entered the second half with a full-court defense, but the Aztecs’ backcourt weaved its way inand-out through the Boise State defense consistently.

fast break and made a highlight behind-the-back pass to senior guard Sajoya Griffin to give SDSU a solid 4630 lead. The Aztecs kept a double-digit lead the rest of the way for the victory.

“This team is the most unselfish team I have played with,” senior center Kalena Tutt said, with the net around her neck. “Ahjalee had a lay up but chose to pass it. We kind of got in trouble during practice this year for sharing the ball a little bit too much.”

Burns, for once, didn’t mind the play-of-the-game.

“Usually I try to keep my game face on, but life is too short to not celebrate joy like that,” Burns said.

SDSU will now turn its focus to the MWC tournament with its first-ever No. 1 seed to play Air Force at noon next Wednesday in Las Vegas.

“It’s going to be a grind every single game,” Clements said.

The Aztecs (3-6) were held hitless for the first four frames, until freshman Steven Pallares led off the fifth with a hit to left-center field. He advanced to third with one out in a 1-0 ball game before Fullerton lefty Tyler Peitzmeier struck out the next two hitters to end the scoring threat.

Despite allowing a run in the first inning, SDSU starter Ryan Doran eventually settled in and made a quality start, throwing six innings in which he allowed seven hits, struck out three and gave up three runs.

However, the junior, who made his first start of the year, was inevitably credited with the loss in a con-

test in which runs were at a premium. Freshman Adam Anawalt followed Doran’s start by tossing two scoreless innings.

On the other side, CSUF starter Dave Birosak, combined with four other Titan pitchers for the shutout, was credited with the win after pitching just one inning in which he retired the side in order.

Michael Lorenzen was the star of the game as he got three hits while playing center field and then came on to close the game with two outs in the ninth for Fullerton after a Spencer Thornton double that brought the tying run to the plate.

After returning home, SDSU will host the annual Aztec Invitational, resuming play at 7 p.m. on Thursday against Cal Poly.

SDSU’s Bailey Ewing knows how to win Freshman captain Bailey Ewing leads a young SDSU team Hunter Hewitt contributor When freshman attacker Bailey Ewing of the San Diego State women’s lacrosse team took the field to face Cincinnati, she was determined to help lead her team to its first-ever win.

The stage was set. It was near-perfect sports weather; a calm, 50-degree night without the snow or rain the East Coast lacrosse players often endure.

The home crowd was filled with enthusiastic students, proud families and other supporters. The adrenaline was pumping and the girls were hungry for a win in the first home game of their inaugural season.

In a back-and-forth game, SDSU used a strong second half and a gutsy performance from Ewing to win 14-9.

The Aztecs needed every goal Ewing accounted for, as she matched the margin of victory with a team-high five points, tallying four goals and an assist.

“It was such a rewarding experience to get our first win,” Ewing said. “It was a really exciting game and we worked together as a unit.”

A native of Reisterstown, Md., Ewing was a tri-sport athlete in high school, excelling in basketball and tennis as well as lacrosse. She attended McDonogh School, a high school known for its elite lacrosse program; her team was the top-ranked team in the country her senior year, following an undefeated season.

According to SDSU head coach Kylee White, coming from a successful high school program has greatly helped Ewing at the college level. She knows what it takes to win, and she leads by example on the field.

Ewing has made quite an impression on her teammates and coaches since enrolling at SDSU. After a demanding fall offseason that consisted of strength and conditioning workouts, practices and scrimmages, Ewing earned the respect of her peers by continuously working hard.

It became clear that she was seen as a leader when her teammates voted her as one of four team captains.

Becoming a captain was a goal Ewing had set for herself when she arrived, and she was thrilled when she was selected.

“It was awesome to be named a captain and it was a big deal to me,” Ewing said. “This is the inaugural season and we are laying the foundation for this program. We are starting traditions that will be carried on from here on out.”

Off the field, Ewing plans to major in business. She hopes to someday have a job behind the scenes with ESPN, but admits she is a bit young to be thinking about a career after college.

For now, Ewing wants to focus on lacrosse. Although the first season is expected to be tough at times, she can’t help but think about the potential success her team could see as it matures.

There is no substitute for experience, and Ewing and 23 other freshmen will see plenty of game action for years to come. If they continue to improve, the sky is the limit for these girls once they are upperclassmen.

“This year our focus is to improve every day. As we get older we are just going to keep getting better,” Ewing said. “We are going to have so much chemistry, and we are going to be a really good team in the future.”

The Aztecs are back in action after a 12-day break when they play St. Mary’s at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Aztec Lacrosse Field.

However, those who have tried Slater’s 50/50 know the secret to a perfect burger is in the patty.

Located in Liberty Station on Dewey Road, Slater’s challenges the quality and cult-followings of In-NOut and Five Guys Burgers and Fries with its juicy patties consisting of 50 percent ground beef and 50 percent ground bacon. On top of this meat lover’s dream patty, Slater’s also offers its customers the option to customize their own burgers or pick from the restaurant’s praised burger designs.

The concept of Slater’s originated at a Chargers tailgate party when Scott Slater, founder of Slater’s 50/50, asked a local butcher to grind bacon for bacon burgers. After tasting something he liked, Slater, a former San Diego State political science major, decided a 50/50 burger would be the perfect product to sell at his new restaurant. Slater’s first location opened in 2009 in Anaheim and was quickly followed by another location in Huntington Beach.

Slater’s San Diego location is the newest addition to the chain and offers the perfect environment for a decadent date or get-together.

The San Diego location welcomes Slater’s virgins with nice benches packed with customers waiting for a taste of the hyped 50/50 burgers. Not a fan of lines? Go on a weekday. Slater’s is a contemporary sports bar so it’s constantly busy, especially on weekends.

The restaurant boasts inside and outside dining areas. The outside area contains heat lamps and a full bar that is open all night. The inside area, on the other hand, is heavily decorated with fluorescent beer signs and black-and-white framed photos of ranches and farm animals.

Inside, patrons can also find more than a dozen TVs to watch nationally televised sports games.

At the back of the restaurant sits a long, full-service bar comprised of more than 50 beers on tap. Slater’s offers beers such as Delirium Nocturum, Abita Purple Haze, Ballast Point and Guinness. Those looking for a less hoppy alternative may want to try Slater’s Bacon Mary, which is a Bloody Mary with a touch of bacon. Happy hour is from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. seven days a week.

Beyond its impressive selection of alcoholic beverages, Slater’s focuses on its hamburgers. Slater’s 50/50 burger, which includes the aforementioned 50 percent bacon and 50 percent ground beef patty, is topped with a sunny-side-up egg, avocado, pepper jack cheese and chipotle mayo. Another house favorite is the Peanut Butter and Jellousy, a Slater’s favorite and award-winner that includes Sterling Silver ground beef topped with thick-cut bacon, thick and creamy peanut butter and strawberry jelly. Because the hamburgers at Slater’s are so monstrous, they are not served with fries. However, a side order of fries and a burger is the perfect size for two. Slater’s recommends an order of sweet potato fries served with pumpkin sauce. The sauce offers a sweet twist that pairs perfectly with the flavor of sweet potato fries. It tastes just like pumpkin pie. Other favorites are the regu-

lar French fries served with baconinfused ketchup. For bacon lovers, this is heaven.

Stealth technology has been used for years by military and government officials to maintain secrecy in the skies. However, this concept is no longer only applicable to such covert

Since the mid-2000s, researchers at Microsoft Research on the Microsoft Redmond campus have been investigating the use of touch on multiple digital and non-digital platforms.

Team members Hrvoje Benko and T. Scott Saponas have discovered two novel approaches to the use of touch and gestures in technology.

With the invention of PocketTouch, gone will be the days of sneaking text messages during class and meetings.

Though this device may not seem stealthily appealing as its name suggests, its exclusivity is. With only 10 laptops created for a cost just less than $6,000, this is no simple buy.

“We didn’t think that a heavy fleece or a jacket pocket would provide enough of a signal to the sensor,” Saponas said. “We only included them during testing to demonstrate a full range of options. To our astonishment, they worked anyway.”

Therefore, text messages can be written whenever and wherever the user pleases, although texting while driving is still not recommended.

“Unfortunately, you will still need to look down, and be possessed of Xray vision, to view any response,” Anne Eisenberg, a journalist for The New York Times, wrote.

Wearable Multitouch Interaction takes this concept even further, but along a different route. This technology claims to be able to turn any surface

into a touch screen platform, including walls, hands, desks and practically anything else the heart desires.

“The Wearable Multitouch Interaction prototype is built to be wearable, a novel combination of laser-based pico projector and depth-sensing camera,” Chang said.

Understandably, many hurdles were tackled in the formation of this innovative concept. Initially, the team had to make sure the system could interact with fingers. This was followed by teaching the system to recognize what fingers actually look like. Then, the team had to determine how to make the system rec-

ognize clicks. The final result was accomplished by using a depth camera, which measured the proximity of the finger to the screen, whatever that screen may be.

“We wanted to capitalize on the tremendous surface area the real world provides,” Benko said. “The surface area of one hand alone exceeds that of typical smart phones.”

Both projects were unveiled during the 2012 Association for Computing Machinery’s 24th Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology on Oct. 1619 of last year in Santa Barbara.

It was during these screenings patrons created a “Rocky Horror Picture

Show”-styled interactive experience, complete with spoon-throwing and football in the aisles while yelling “Mystery Science Theater”-caliber commentary at the screen.

With a narrative structure as unrecognizable as Wiseau’s accent, “The Room” is possibly a cautionary tale about love triangles, a public service announcement for drug addiction, a melodrama about beard shaving, a psychological study about inappropriate sexual boundaries with behaviorally challenged neighbors, a comedy about cancer and a sports film about playing football in tuxedos. It is a film that requires a theater to convey all of its awfulness.

The band is a happy, harmonic combination of country and rock ‘n’ roll. It has toured with the likes of The Avett Brothers, The Black Crowes and Lynryd Skynryd. The band released its selftitled debut album last May and is currently working on its second album.

Andrew Younger senior staff writer From the soot sprites of “My Neighbor Totoro” to the tiny human-faced fish in “Ponyo,” the latest Hayao Miyazaki-penned animated export, “The Secret World of Arrietty,” combines his fascination with small magical creatures and strong female leads.

Based on Mary Norton’s children’s novel “The Borrowers,” the film follows the eponymous Arrietty, voiced in the U.S. by Bridgit Mendler, as she and her diminutive family live beneath the floorboards and hide from any creatures big enough to eat them. On her 14th birthday, Arrietty’s father Pod, a particularly gruffsounding Will Arnett, takes Arriety on her first adventure inside the house where they borrow necessities from its human occupants. However, when a young boy with a heart condition named Shawn (David Henrie) spots Arrietty in his bedroom, the rediscovery of the Borrowers’ existence threatens to destroy the already-dwindling population.

the size of mountains and fends off cricket attackers with a pushpin for a sword — all within the space of a human-sized kitchen. As an added bonus, “Totoro” fans will notice a feline that could pass for the lethargic sibling of Catbus. Also noteworthy is the way Yonebayashi and company shift subjective sounds between human and Borrower perspectives within the same scene, giving pedestrian noises such as human footsteps or falling rain an earth-rumbling effect, and then fading into the background once again depending on which character is listening.

Studio Ghibli films tend to paint themes in broad strokes and leave the nuance to its vibrant animated world. Meticulous attention to detail can be seen in the single drop of tea that fills a Borrower’s cup or the rollypolly Arrietty uses for a beach ball.

These moments lend the film its effortless charm. The computer-gen-

erated animation lends the film a slick, modern feel while the handdrawn characters and watercolor backgrounds maintain an organic quality that contributes to the texture of the lush rural setting.

“The Secret World of Arrietty” draws parallels between Shawn’s illness and the endangered Borrower population. Through the burgeoning friendship between the young boy and Arrietty (and the fact that Arrietty’s last name in the novel is Clock), the audience realizes the characters in this story are borrowing more than various household goods: They are borrowing time.

orget what the mainstream media will tell you about national security. In reality, the realest of real threats against our nation is a secret army of female ninja assassins currently being trained in Iran. In case you aren’t sure of what you just read, allow me to reiterate the sobering truth: Iran is in possession of secret, all-women ninja army technology. Why are we still worried about nuclear weapons? Lots of countries with mentally unstable leaders have nuclear weapons, right? How many countries have secret armies of lady ninjas?

I’ll tell you how many. One. Iran is the only one, which makes it the scariest nation on earth. Iran has carefully manipulated the world, using the media to paint a picture

Ninja master Akbar Faraji is in charge of the school in Tehran where the female ninjas receive their training. When asked about the purpose of the training pro-

gram, Faraji said, “We train women to have strength and ability. We have to do everything in our power to protect our homeland.”

Is it time for America to produce its own elite ninja woman army?

There are an estimated 3,500 women in Iran’s ninja corps. Are we prepared to deal with the very real dangers our enemies threaten us with? Obviously, the answer is a resounding “no.” So please, write to your congressman and make sure they are informed about this critical issue.
