Carter’s case still unsettled Bike lane receives a Task Force soon

Chavis Carter’s death is still in question after case has been closed.

The bizarre case of 21-year-old Chavis Carter, who authorities say shot himself in the head while handcuffed in the back of a police car, prompted numerous questions about the legitimacy of the Jonesboro Police Department’s investigation of the incident.

According to the police report, Carter and two others were pulled over by officers Ron Marsh and Keith Bagget for driving around suspiciously. At around 10 p.m. on July 28 in Jonesboro, Ark. Carter was Terry frisked, or patted down, by Bagget, who according to the report found no weapon and took him to the back of Marsh’s police vehicle.

According to the report, after he and Marsh learned Carter had an active warrant out of Desoto County, Miss., Carter was searched a second time by Marsh, who found $10 worth of marijuana on him, but still no weapon.

Baggett’s report reads Carter was then handcuffed and again placed in the back seat of Marsh’s patrol unit.

Baggett wrote in the police

report that he heard “a loud thump with a metallic sound,” shortly after, but thought a passing car had run over a piece of metal.

Marsh wrote that it wasn’t until he entered his patrol car and noticed a “burned smell” that Carter was slumped over in the backseat, unresponsive and covered in blood. A .380 caliber handgun, as well as a used cartridge, was reportedly found on the seat next to him.

According to Baggett’s report, Carter was still breathing and taken to St. Bernards Regional Medical Center, where he died shortly after.

The Arkansas State Crime Laboratory has ruled the death a suicide.

Carter’s mother, Teresa Carter, does not believe he committed suicide. Carter was shot in the right temple, but Teresa claims her son was left-handed.

Jonesboro Police Chief Michael Yates said the case “defies logic at first glance” and told The Associated Press, “It is likely, since he was placed into the car un-handcuffed the first time, that he had an opportunity to stash the weapon in the car.”

However, many comments in online news articles have been posted concerning the incident, asking how it was possible Marsh and Baggett found a small amount of marijuana, but no gun. They also asked how Carter was able to shoot himself in the head while handcuffed behind his back.

In response, the Jonesboro Police Department released a “reenactment video” to demonstrate that it is indeed possible for someone to hold a gun to their head while handcuffed behind the back.

Yates said both Marsh and Baggett were placed on paid administrative leave and have since returned to work.

Jonesboro Police Sgt. Lyle Waterworth said the department will not make any statements regarding the case.

The San Diego State University Senate is coordinating with Associated Students to create a bike lane task force.

University Senate chair Bill Eadie said he expects the task force made of staff, students and faculty to be in effect by the end of the week.

Details about the task force aren’t

fully fleshed out yet, but Director of SDSU’s School of Communication William Snavely said it will “come into effect pretty quickly.”

Snavely who will chair the task force, will work with A.S. Vice President of University Affairs Matthew Cecil.

Snavely says he assumes the task force is being set up to assess the safety and access of alternative wheeled vehicles on campus.

Undocumented students receive exemption

A month after the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program was implemented, the Obama administration approved the first applicants. As many continue to apply, the process has proven to be strenuous.

The DACA allows undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and who meet several guidelines to be exempt from deportation for up to two years and grants them work permits, which are subject to renewal.

The Obama administration approved applications from 29 individuals, the Department of Homeland Security announced on Sept. 14.

According to DHS spokesman Peter Boogaard, 82,000 individuals have applied since the Immigration and Citizenship Services began accepting applications for the program on Aug.15.

To be eligible, the applicants must prove that they arrived in the U.S before the age of 16; continuously resided in the U.S. since June 15, 2007; were under the age of 31 as of June 15, 2012; entered without inspection before June 15, 2012, or had lawful immigration status expired as of June 15, 2012; are high school graduates, in college, or have been honorably discharged from the military; and have not been convicted of a felony, significant misdemeanor

or three or more misdemeanors, and do not otherwise pose a threat.

Applicants must mail documents that prove the applicant meets the guidelines, along with two U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services forms and a $465 fee.

Finally, the applicant is required to visit a local UCIS Application Support Center for a scheduled biometric services appointment.

Approximately 30,00 students in San Diego County qualify for the DACA, according to Executive Director of the Equality San Diego Andrea Guerrero.

Equality San Diego has organized

various events that include informational forums, eligibility assessment events, and application assistance events, all through Dreamer Assistance Network.

“Our main objectives are to provide reliable information, prevent fraud, and connect potential applicants with trusted legal service providers,” Immigrant Rights Organizer of Equality San Diego Daniel Alfaro said.

Equality San Diego has been able to provide information to an estimated 8,000 people. Through assessment events it has serviced 3,000 people, and through application assistance

events it has serviced 600 applicants, according to Alfaro.

On Sept. 4, the San Diego Unified School District opened an office at the Ballard Parent Center in Old Town to help students who needed school records to prove they satisfy the DACA requirements.

Each applicant receives a record of their school history identifying the schools the applicant has attended and the year he or she enrolled, as well as a high school transcript, according to program manager Bea Fernandez.

In addition, the applicant receives an official district letter stating any name corrections matching his or her birth certificate.

Having the name on an applicant’s birth certificate match the name on district records is crucial and has been a major setback for many students. Though most students bare a first name, middle name, and two last names, they enroll in school with only a first and last name.

“Unfortunately, the majority of students’ names on our records do not match because their parents did not do so when they first enrolled their children in school, so we have to correct our records manually and then provide each applicant a personalized letter noting the change,” Fernandez said.

Fernandez said the district has processed nearly 1,000 applications since Aug. 15. Since then, the number of individuals requesting to make an appointment has slightly decreased, from 80 and 100 requests a day the first two weeks to now having 60 and 80 a day.

“It does not surprise me that the federal government is not able to process more applications,” Fernandez said. “I think everyone underestimated the time and staffing necessary to help applicants retrieve the documents needed for this process.”

Correction In yesterday’s article, “Public forum prioritizes education,” it was stated that State Senate 39th District candidate George Plescia would support Proposition 30 if it included pension reform and a spending cap. According to Plescia’s campaign manager, Clinton Soffer,

BARTENDING SCHOOL TEACHES BASICS Heather Rushall Staff Writer

You’ve been 21 for a while and the bar scene is nothing new. You could suggest the perfect place to anyone for any occasion, and your friends stalk your Facebook page to see where the party is on any given night. You’re a bar expert.

No doubt, by now you’ve found yourself wondering what it might be like to be on the other side of the bar. Surely you’ve tried every drink on the menu and then some – it can’t be that hard to mix them, right?

The old myth that bars won’t hire someone with just bartending school under their belts is dead.

“Imagine someone comes into your work claiming they can do your job just as well as you can for the same amount of pay with only two weeks of school,” San Diego Bartending School owner Matt Machado said. “You would be offended, right?”

Machado and the teachers at San Diego Bartending School encourage students to learn as much as they can, make lots of mistakes and get a feel for the bar while they’re in class so they look like naturals in the job front.

San Diego Bartending School, located on Mission Gorge Road in Mission Valley, offers two-week courses for those interested in learning the ins and outs of the bar. In class, students learn about alcohol, how to mix and serve drinks, the etiquette of bartending and the laws surrounding the bar business.

Students also learn bar terminology, free pouring and measuring, customer service, and even how to increase tips.

The best (and certainly most useful) part of the class is that students spend about eight of the 10 days of the course getting hands-on experience mixing drinks. The practice bottles are filled with colored water, so students can mix as many drinks as they want and make as many mistakes as they need to without

wasting a drop of liquor.

Everything needed for the class is included in the price. The school offers a hefty discount for San Diego State students.

After students complete the 30 hours required for graduation, teachers will assist with putting together a resume and offer advice on nailing the interview and keeping the job. Graduates are then ready to go into the workforce immediately.

San Diego Bartending School has a Facebook page devoted to posting local job listings and maintains relationships with bars and restaurants in the area specifically seeking the school’s graduates.

CAPRIOTTI’S BRINGS EAST COAST FLAVOR Shellie Stamps Staff Writer

If you’re anything like me, checking out new places to eat is one of your favorite things to do. Whenever there’s a new restaurant in town you round up all your friends to find what all the hype is about. Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop, San Diego’s newest deli, has opened right down the street from campus on College Avenue and El Cajon Boulevard. I had the pleasure of checking it and sampling some of its signature sandwiches, all of which were absolutely delicious: especially the chicken Philly cheese steak.

Capriotti’s has a wide range of options including subs, burgers, hot and cold sandwiches, delectable cheesesteaks, soups, salads and even vegetarian options.

Some of its specialties include the Cole Turkey, made with turkey, provolone cheese and mayo; the Capastrami, made with delicious hot pastrami, Swiss cheese and cole slaw; the Slaw Be Jo, including roast beef, provolone cheese

and cole slaw and the famous Bobbie sandwich, a nationallyacclaimed best seller. All of these have earned the title “Simply The Best” since 1976.

I also like that Miller’s is a big place. It has two stories, so there’s plenty of seating and room to walk around, not to mention the top floor is only partially covered – great for enjoying the beautiful San Diego weather while admiring the ocean view. But the best thing about Miller’s is the atmosphere. Bargoers are usually in their

mid-20s and are there to watch their favorite football team. And with 38 TVs, there’s a very good chance that the game you’re looking for will be on. If there’s a big game or UFC fight happening, be ready for a crowd and get there early.

However, there is hope for us light-walleted night owls. Soda Bar is one such hope.

Usually featuring live music ever y day of the week, Soda Bar runs through some of the

best San Diego locals while still managing to bring in some out-oftown talent looking to play a small, intimate show. Best of all, it’s down-to-earth. Its got relatively inexpensive drinks, rarely a cover you’ll sweat about and an eclectic mix of San Diegans looking to have a good time without selling organs to pay

for drinks. What’s more, they have NFL Blitz ’98 (I think it’s ’98, but that’s kind of a guess, although it’s old enough to be nostalgic) and Street Fighter 2, along with some other arcade games I care less about.

They’ve also got a pool table, but there’s no interesting way to tell you that.

It’s right next to the famous Lucha Libre Taco Shop. The

owners allow outside food, so if customers are tired from dancing, they can grab a taco and bring it to the bar. Those looking to pick up a date or meet someone new may not find success at Bar Dynamite. Despite all of that, good music is always guaranteed.

The walls and roof of the small bar are covered in beer advertisements and old beer tap handles. Early birds and diligent patrons can snatch one of the two pool tables crammed in the middle of weekend crowds and the luckiest few will take their place at the shuffleboard table running along the wall.

The secret to Hamiltons’ success may be its small cafe next door. Open until 12 a.m. most weekend nights, it

offers the perfect accompaniments to your IPA, including a vegan Cattle Decapitation-inspired burger. You don’t even have to put down your drink to order. A small window cut into the back corner wall lets you order conveniently and directly into the kitchen.

For a treat you can’t get anywhere else, buy a plate of tater tots with a side of unique beer-cheese dip. End the night on a sweet note with a Lindemans Framboise raspberry lambic.

Ana Ceballos It will be no coincidence if you find yourself wandering around Little Italy and the words “El Camino” in flashing pink neon lights entice you into the restaurant. I’m sorry, but it’s bound to happen. It happened to me. Once inside, you will encounter an ambiance resembling a Robert Rodriguez movie. (If a movie could ever be a restaurant with wall

décor and spotless bathrooms that is.)

It was a Tuesday when I first stepped foot in this restaurant and I was not disappointed.

Tacos were half off and margaritas were just the way I like them– sweet and strong–and only $3. And do not get me started on the salsas, because I finished the last drop of that piquant taste.

El Camino is a great place to have a tasty

drink while you get lost in the restaurant’s decor. And men, my male friends always rave about how “all the hot girls in San Diego” hang out at El Camino.

As for the ladies, well, there is good music, pretty wallpaper and always delicious drinks.

Oscar’s Mexican Seafood Laurel Vozely As a San Diegan, it’s easy to become partial to your go-to taco shop, but something special is happening on the coast. In Pacific Beach, San Diegans can find Oscar’s Mexican Seafood, which cooks some of the best fish tacos the city has to offer, specifically the spicy shrimp taco. One bite of shrimp ceviche is all it takes to appreciate the fresh ingredients and seasonings at Oscar’s Mexican Seafood.

Prices are reasonable, as most items are a la carte, ranging from $3-11. However, be prepared with cash, because this restaurant doesn’t accept credit or debit cards. The hang loose mentality of Pacific Beach permeates the atmosphere at Oscar’s Mexican Seafood. The community has embraced the shop since its opening a little more than a year ago, which is evident by the long lines out the door and growing popularity among locals. Jump in line and let Oscar’s woo your taste buds.

Tourists and locals alike flock to Old Town, San Diego enjoy the most delicious Mexican cuisine found this side of the border. Several authentic taco shops and cantinas adorn the main street, but Old Town Mexican Cafe remains a top contender. The resturant is known for its menu, atmosphere and tortillas. With a glass window in front offering onlookers a glimpse of the homemade tortilla process. Customers can enjoy their famous traditional carnitas which feature pieces of pork with cilantro, onion, avocado, tomato, peppers, beans and of course, homemade tortillas. The cafe also hosts a live table-side performance from a mariachi band. Entrées are served at quite a reasonable price, considering the large portions.

This place is extremely busy during peak hours and weekends, so be prepared for a parking hunt and wait time.

Students wishing to explore the historic sites of Old Town and enjoy an authentic meal need look no further than Old Town Mexican Cafe.

Ultra-cool downtown Mexican restaurant Pokéz has something for carnivores, vegetarians and vegans alike.

The sticker-plastered door and art-covered green walls invite customers into enjoy Mexican food like they’ve never had it before. This family owned and operated business is just a few blocks away from the Gaslamp Quarter (and its tourists), which makes it a treasured local destination.

Ordering is easy because everything on the menu is clearly labeled with vegan and vegetarian symbols.

Being a San Diego resident who lives only 30 minutes from the border has its cuisine perks, especially when it comes to eating cheap, authentic Mexican food. Lolita’s Taco Shop has been my usual go-to spot when craving the West Coast’s very own carne asada fries. Lolita’s is known for its affordable prices, quick service and tasty carne asada fries, which in the last 20 years has become a famous dish among locals. For those who haven’t tried carne asada fries, the dish combines the best of both American and Mexican food in a flavorful, spicy plate: of french fries mixed with carne asada and topped with onions, guacamole, sour cream and salsa. If you’re craving a burrito, the California burrito contains the same ingredients wrapped in a tortilla. How the cooks manage to fit all those ingredients in a flour tortilla is impressive, but not as impressive as the food itself. What started off as a small sit-down Mexican taco shop in Chula Vista has spread to neighboring locations, including downtown San Diego. Founders Joaquin and Dolores Farfan have a new shop called Lolita’s At the Park next to Petco Park. Stop by Lolita’s on Tall Can Tuesdays for happy hour prices all day and order the carne asada fries. Pro tip: Add tons of lime.

To start, try one of the appetizers, known as tapas, which are smaller in portion but big on flavor. The highlight of this venue, however, is the pizza. Artisan options will leave patrons feeling like they’re dining in Italy. Gluten-free and thin crusts are available for those with dietary restrictions as well. While the food is on the pricier side, the quality of the product is certainly worth the extra dough.

The quality of the restaurant is reflected instantly in the secluded lobby. While waiting to be seated, a flat-screen TV displays pictures of mouthwatering entrees and various celebrities who have eaten at the location. Steve Carell, Eminem and Harrison Ford are a few who have made appearances.

At the group tables, chefs cook meals in front of you while providing entertainment and encouraging interaction. Hibachi steak is the most popular item on the menu.

A lounge area with TVs and a drink and sushi bar provides a more casual and intimate environment. One excuse to dine in the lounge is Benihana’s happy hour, which is Monday through Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. With sushi rolls starting at $2.25, it’s ideal for the college budget.

Corvette Diner Christian Benavides Corvette Diner is definitely the place to go for classic American food. It sets itself apart from other restaurants by building its theme around one of the most popular decades of all time: the ‘50s. Once inside Corvette Diner, patrons are blasted with music in the likes of Joe Turner, which will definitely make them want to shake, rattle and roll. The waiters and waitresses’ upbeat and positive energy, clad in ‘50s attire, add to the experience, as do the themed rooms. My personal favorite is the Woodstock room. The food is no letdown either. The most popular burger is aptly named Sid’s Cowboy Western, with its mash of Kentucky stud barbecue sauce, bacon, onion rings and cheddar. Not even the beverages fall short of creativity. Diner enthusiasts can cool down with a Cha Cha Chocolate shake or quench their thirst with a cool custom lime soda called Green River. Don’t be a fool, the ‘50s are awaiting.

An unassuming location in a shopping center that specializes in Korean goods makes Convoy Tofu House hard to find and the interior design looks like the subject of an ongoing argument between a massage therapist and a funeral director. But, this doesn’t detract from an authentic and enjoyable culinary experience. The complementary banchan (small portions of food including kimchee and vegetables) served at the beginning of the meal makes the miso soup served at mainstream sushi chains look like a pathetic excuse for an appetizer. Customers dining with someone who just can’t decide between the dumpling soft tofu stew or the beef bulgogi (barbecue) can be entertained by a TV showing K-pop music videos in the adjacent Katzra Sushi Bar, which dishes out California and spider rolls good enough to animate the taste buds.

Be warned: resisting the impulse to indulge in mochi green tea ice cream after the meal will be difficult.

Phil’s BBQ Restaurant Nicole Yi Phil’s BBQ Restaurant is “Home of the Best BBQ” in San Diego, but definitely deserves recognition everywhere.

Because this joint serves the best mouthwatering mesquite grilled baby back ribs along with the friendliest service, customers wait while lining up around the restaurant. For patrons looking to sit down for dinner, expect to wait at least two hours during the dinner rush. The energetic atmosphere and large portions make the dining experience well worth the wait. The best thing to do is to call in an order and pick it up shortly after to avoid the ridiculous lines. Located only 15 minutes away from campus on Sports Arena Boulevard, Phil’s BBQ is truly the place to go when craving barbecue. For a delicious meal for two, order the baby back rib full dinner, which includes two small sides. The macaroni and potato salads are must-haves with any meal.

Domo Sushi in Santee has been providing customers with fresh, great-tasting sushi since 2008. Along with outstanding food, Domo provides a clean, comfortable atmosphere for customers to relax and enjoy. The restaurant features a bar where customers can watch the chefs masterfully craft their signature creations or catch a sporting event on the big screen TV. The menu at Domo sushi has much to offer. One of the restaurant’s signature rolls is the Ring of Fire, a dish that lives up to its name. Cut rolls filled with salmon, crab, avocado and cream cheese are deep fried and topped with eel sauce, spicy mayo and Sriracha. As a finishing touch, a fresh jalapeño is placed on top, adding a satisfying crunch to this spicy culinary experience.

The prices at Domo Sushi are among the most reasonable in San Diego. The restaurant runs specials all week long, including 50 percent off cut rolls and 30 percent off specialty rolls everyday. These prices keep customers coming back in packs, so don’t be surprised if you have to wait awhile to get in. Rest assured, eating at Domo is always worth the wait.

Who knew 2012 would be the year of the horror-themed animated movie?

“ParaNorman” came out during summer and Tim Burton’s homage to “Frankenstein,” “Frankenweenie,” will be released in October. This week, a new comedy about classic terror characters, “Hotel Transylvania,” debuts in theaters.

In a short prologue, an ultra-serious Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) builds a hotel to keep supernatural beings, including his only daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez), safe from humans. The story then skips to the present day, with the hotel being visited by infamous faces including Murray the Mummy (Cee Lo Green), a werewolf named Wayne (Steve Buscemi) and even Frankenstein (Kevin James).

Dracula loves his daughter but is very overprotective, because he fears humans will treat her harshly. The vampire is shocked when an average guy, Jonathan (Andy Samberg), finds himself inside Dracula’s hotel and falls in love with Mavis.

One aspect of “Hotel Transylvania” that immediately stands out is the gifted voice cast. Sandler is usually at his most interesting when taking risks in his performances, which applies in this movie. He plays Dracula very straight, even when the situations are ridiculous. The contrast makes

Boasting more than 90 artists on seven stages, the Adams Avenue Street Fair is one of the largest free music festivals in California. The festival takes place in the heart of midtown on Adams Avenue between interstates 15 and 805. Several blocks are closed to through traffic to accommodate this pedestrianonly event. 1. Boise State Broncos (2-1, 0-0 Mountain West) I have to give the top spot in the power rankings to Boise State because it’s the only MW team ranked or receiving votes in national polls. Please forget

about its less-than-impressive win against Birmingham Young University last Thursday night.

2. Nevada Wolf Pack (3-1, 1-0 MW) Everyone predicted a win at Hawai’i, but not by 45 points.

Running back Stefphon Jefferson broke out against the Warriors, rushing for 170 yards and six touchdowns to go with three

receptions for 76 yards and one touchdown.

3. Fresno State Bulldogs (22, 0-0 MW) Fresno State lost to Tulsa? I know it was only a one-point loss, but not many expected it.

Running back Robbie Rouse and quarterback Derek Carr are the real deal.

4. San Diego State Aztecs (22, 0-0 MW) Behind the power running duo of Adam Muema and Walter Kazee and quarterback Ryan Katz, the Aztecs have plenty of talent on offense. Until the defense steps up and stops someone, SDSU will remain in the middle of the pack in this conference.

5. UNLV Rebels (1-3, 1-0 MW) I only gave UNLV a better ranking than Wyoming because the Rebels beat Air Force,

a conference opponent, and are therefore undefeated in conference play. Quarterback Nick Sherry is showing he is capable of playing the position at a decent level.

6. Wyoming Cowboys (1-3, 0-0 MW) After losing the first three games of the season, the Cowboys came up with a big win on the road against the Idaho Vandals in overtime. Quarterback Brett Smith turned in an amazing performance, throwing for 365 yards and five touchdowns, both career-highs.

7. Air Force Falcons (1-2, 0-1 MW) Losing to UNLV was definitely not the way the Falcons wanted to start off conference play. Air Force built up a 28-17 lead, but ended up losing 38-35. Everyone expected more from this team.

8. New Mexico Lobos (2-2, 0-0 MW) I have to give it up to New Mexico for defeating in-state rival New Mexico State on the road, but don’t get me wrong. The Lobos are not a good football team.

9. Colorado State Rams (1-3, 0-0 MW) What happened to the team that beat the University of Colorado the first week of the season? The Rams have underachieved in my mind, but injuries and a tough non-conference schedule can take the blame for that.

10: Hawaii Warriors (1-2, 0-1 MW) Poor Norm Chow. I’m not sure he knew what he was getting himself into when he took the job as Hawaii’s head coach in December 2011. This is a young team, which will develop in this transition year.

ruled it a suicide. Page reportedly had ties to a neo-Nazi group called the Hammerskin Nation. This hate group has been active for 25 years and lives by a mission statement called “The 14 Words,” which read: “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.” The basis of the Hammerskin belief is that all other races are subordinate to the white race, which will become extinct if not protected by whatever means necessary.

Mark Pitcavage, fact-finding director of the Anti-Defamation League, told PBS NewsHour, “Hammerskins are one of the largest and oldest hard-core racist skinhead groups in the United States. They started in Texas in the mid-to-late 1980s and spread out from there.”

Today, in the U.S. there are five main submovements of white supremacist groups. They consist of the neo-Nazis, traditional white supremacists (aka trads), racist prison gangs, Christian Identity (an anti-Semitic religious sect) and skinheads. This classification does not count smaller, lesser-known racist groups such as the Peckerwoods.

So, while Americans have terrorism radars set to fear the dark-skinned foreigner, homegrown terrorists are staying off the grid and practically getting away with murder – sometimes literally.

“White supremacy is the true ‘homegrown’ terrorism, dating back to the 18th century in the United States,” Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite of The Washington Post said. “White supremacy is the greatest danger we as Americans face as a source of domestic terrorism, and one of the least recognized.”

Two months before the attack on the Sikh temple in Oak Creek, the Southern Poverty Law Center

compiled a special training video outlining the threat white supremacist groups pose in their own communities. The video was issued to tens of thousands of law enforcement officers, but law enforcement agencies didn’t urge their officers to watch the video until the day after Page gunned down the temple.

Sadly, the U.S. is a country that likes to focus on finding people to blame after tragedies and certainly doesn’t want to blame itself. The attack on the World Trade Center was a tragedy, but so were the

murders at the Sikh temple, yet we have turned a blind eye to that incident. I think it’s because we cannot accept having to face reality: Not all bad things are done by foreigners.

White supremacy and other groups driven by hate and superiority are just as dangerous, if not more so, to our communities and our country. So when using the term “terrorist,” remember: it’s not just the guys who look different. It could just as well be your white, middle-class neighbor.

errorism is commonly defined as “the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims.” It’s a popular definition with no mention of race, culture or skin color. So why have we created a connotation that makes people uneasy on airplanes if the passenger next to them is sporting a turban or a dark, fluffy beard?

The term “terrorist” was not coined when 9/11 happened. The American idea of how a terrorist is supposed to look and who they’re supposed to hate, has become completely skewed since the twin towers fell 11 years ago.

There is a bigger threat to average citizens than stereotypical foreign terrorists … and that threat is likely right in your backyard.

“In the American imagination, there is a one-dimensional portrait of terrorism — one that adorns turbans, beards and brown skin,” Khaled A. Beydoun said in an editorial for Al Jazeera. “While Muslim Americans are policed to the teeth, white supremacist groups have operated with relative freedom and impunity.”

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization that tracks and reports hate and extremist groups throughout the country, there are 13 hate groups in San Diego County alone, four of which are white supremacist-oriented groups, and none of which are affiliated with the Taliban or al-Qaida.

White supremacist groups are terrorist organizations. In fact, neo-Nazi hate groups and skinheads are so much more prevalent that they actually pose a larger threat to homeland security than any of the groups alleged to have committed the attacks on our nation’s capital.

In August, gunman Wade Michael Page opened fire in a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis., killing six people. Page was shot in the abdomen by police, but died when he shot himself in the head. Police

anser struggled. He attempted to round the corner quickly, fumbling with his datacom device. His fingers, tapping the touch screen like torrential rain on a glass roof, failed to make the call he needed. Behind him, he heard the footsteps drawing closer. Though he nearly slammed into the wall from his overzealous 90 degree corner spin, Ganser took cover at the end of the hall which he had been barreling down.

He stopped, chest pounding, to place the call he had been meaning to make for sometime now; about 10 minutes. Ganser focused, dialed furiously and after only one comm-signal tone, a voice on the other end frantically said, “Where the hell have you been?”

Ganser heaved and placed his free hand on his thigh, his breath becoming more heavy and tired. “He … It’s here. Are you within range?”

The voice was terse in its reply.

“Yes, been ready. Hurry.”

Ganser hung up and slid the datacom back into his jacket pocket. Footsteps again. Closer this time. Without hesitation, Ganser sped toward the door to his right, watching himself run toward the reflective glass, just as he saw another figure slink around the corner he had just been flush against. Crap.

As he stepped onto the roof, Ganser tried to steady himself.

His eyes shifted precisely left, right, left, looking for his one hope of surviving. The city around him, a cavalcade of glass and steel, provided a backdrop of a thousand mirrors, all reflecting the same image.

Several yards away, Ganser caught the split-second glimpse of what would hopefully put an end to this ill-fated attempt at innovation. A small red dot danced across the small stair structure, which Ganser had just shot out of.

Any minute now. His trigger finger eased up slightly in an attempt to relax. That’s what he always heard about firearms: squeeze, don’t pull. Jiro had never held a real rifle before, let alone fired one. He figured so much of the marksman process was automated now that the skill portion had fallen by the wayside and abandoned in a previous age. Point, shoot, kill. The whole thing was unsettlingly streamlined.

Just as Jiro had time to take a breath, the construct bounded onto the roof. Jiro watched through his lens as Ganser whipped around, a look of horror crossing his face. Jiro tensed.

His sights lined up, numbers quickly crunching as the Krinkov rifle calculated the force needed to hit the indicated target. Two blue circles quickly became a single red one, focused on Ganser. The rifle beeped softly, as the firing sequence was ready to engage.

Panic turned to desperation as Jiro realized what was happening. Krinkov rifles tracked heat, and the only thing on that roof emitting heat was Ganser.

The construct had one of the most advanced heat sinks known to man, designed by Jiro himself.

The design was revolutionary, yet currently his pride in the device’s effectiveness and intense irony for the same reason were at odds within himself.

With the situation becoming critical, Jiro’s mind raced as he searched for a solution, which he needed in another millisecond or so. The construct was closing in on Ganser, ready to finish what it had begun so many months ago.

The construct, a product of both biotic engineering and the most advanced defense technology known to man, was a marvel to behold. Its skin was made of a bonding of Kevlar and steel, which was engineered to be both light and impenetrable. A cloaking system was created by

Ganser, making the construct the most deadly of weapons, both at home and abroad. However, it was the only one; a prototype.

It had started off well enough, and funding was never an issue. Ganser and Jiro had overstepped their bounds and created something so transhuman, something far too intelligent, that it could not in anyway be controlled.

This was a machine to be used by people, on people, though that original plan was long gone. Once the artificial intelligence became sentient and eradicated the third member of the development team, Ganser and Jiro knew there was no other option but termination and rebuilding, this time with greater security measures such as a remote kill switch. Hindsight is always so clear.

Funding and backers began to pull out, and soon enough, the construct was loose, and more importantly, dangerous. There was no predicting what Artificial Intelligence would do, especially because it was programmed with such high-security clearance and specific goals. Oddly enough, no one had died since Lanceman’s neck was broken in the construct’s escape from the lab. The more troubling issue arose once the security breaches began, for no one could trace nor understand what had caused them or what the underlying motive was. Ganser knew. Jiro knew. The construct knew, though maybe not consciously.

None of that mattered, however, as the electromagnetic pulse round sliced through the construct’s head, and ultimately its central intelligence. The construct’s armor was pierced and its shields made a soft beeping noise as they went down.

Though the construct’s processes suddenly went dark, the words “evolve transcend acquiesce” began to process through an unseen mainframe. In the end, all that truly occurred was a long sequence of ones and zeros that made up the intelligence that had plagued Ganser for so long. As quickly as they had begun, the numbers appeared to stop.
