Coziness, creativity and caffeine Staff Writer
When driving down Adams Avenue, it’s good to remember that the Starbucks located inside Vons isn’t the only place to get coffee. Broke Girls’ Coffee Bar has only been open for four months, but this small, independently owned coffeeshop is definitely worth a visit. If life feels as though it’s flying by too fast, this is the place to slow down. Upon entering, customers are surrounded by olive-painted walls and wooden bar tabletops that create an earthy feel. The experience is enhanced by a quiet radio playing music by The XX and The Killers, purple sparkling seat cushions and blackboard menus written in rainbow chalk. Though there was only one worker behind the counter when I visited, the service was fast, friendly and flexible to accommodate customers’ desires. In addition to homemade quiches and pies, Broke Girls’ Coffee Bar specializes in locally roasted cold brew and pourover coffees that offer rich flavors. Glutenfree and vegan menu options are readily available as well. Patrons come to relax and stay to enjoy their orders after a long day’s work or to catch up with friends, whether it’s inside the small shop, out front in the windowed bar area or behind the shop in a garden with backyard plants and mismatched patio furniture. The food and drink options are rather
plentiful, and a price range that varies from $1 to $5 per item allows the bar to live up to its name. Hot drinks on the menu include a house brew, Americano and latte coffees, espressos (with macchiato and con panna options), tea from a local tea house and cocoa. Cold beverages branch out more with choices of iced tea, soda (including Italian) and Vietnamese iced coffee in addition to
regular cold brew with added shots, whip or syrup. A scoop of ice cream can be added to any drink to create any type of float the customer would like. The food on the menu can satisfy a stomach hungry for either a snack or dinner. Oatmeal is served with brown sugar, nuts and fruit. The impressively tasty Greek yogurt is topped with fruit and granola. Sweet cravings can be

Flavor erupts at Krakatoa Carla Romero

Nothing says happiness like a good cup of coffee. As much as we all love the plastic container with the little green straw, sometimes the best coffee comes from your local coffeeshop. Krakatoa coffeeshop offers a delicious full espresso bar to fill every coffee lover’s cup. From a house brew to cappuccinos, lattes, and macchiatos, this cozy coffee shack tucked in Golden Hill offers delicious drinks in monster-sized mugs and cups. Krakatoa uses Illy Caffe esspresso in its specialty coffee drinks. The coffee menu averages around $3 per drink. Krakatoa offers coffee lovers a delicious cappuccino. The milky drink is sure to please anyone looking for the Italian coffee favorite. For the brave and the caffeine addicts, the Krakhead packs a punch. Proceed with caution—shots of espresso poured into black coffee, this beverage jolts drinkers into a caffeinated frenzy. In the mood for a cool drink? The iced mocha is a chocolaty choice that has the necessary caffeine while being refreshing. For a sweet alternative, Krakatoa’s chai latte is a pleasant and calming tea option. The coffeeshop also serves a full menu of breakfast items, sandwiches and salads. The El Chichon sandwich is a mouthful of Black Forest ham, melted Oaxaca cheese
with avocado, mayonnaise and red onions. The sandwich is served on a toasted telera (Mexican bolillo) bread. Every sandwich comes with a side of potato salad that is sure to please anybody looking for a full healthy meal. After finishing lunch, customers can choose from a variety of desserts ranging from brownies and muffins to cookies and cakes. Krakatoa bakes all of its own home-
satisfied with chocolate banana, peanut butter, apple, key lime and raspberry cheesecakes and pies, while those in the mood for savory can go for taco, veggie, Chicken Little or bacon pies and quiches. The strawberry banana bliss, purple carrot cake and “cookies in the raw” all appeal to the gluten-free crowd. According to the Broke Girls’ Coffee Bar official website, this restaurant is a place “where coffee and artistry collide.” Any day of the week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., it’s a great spot for getting away from the chaotic college scene without putting a major dent in that college wallet.

style pastries. For those who live a less caffeinated life, Krakatoa also offers a variety of drinks such as Italian sodas and smoothies made with fresh fruit. Aside from great coffee and fabulous food, Krakatoa has a very homey vibe and feel. The coffeehouse’s resident cat lounges around the place making every one who comes in feel welcome.

Deli serves fun along with its food Kelly hillock staff writer
Open the door to the Deli Llama and you’ll find yourself stopped short, unable to move past the queue that snakes all the way to the entrance. A phone rings and an employee jots down sandwich orders from businessmen calling in their lunch orders. A collection of llamas are scattered around the small sandwich shop and a stack of books towers high next to the cookie selection. A large chandelier completes the comfortable, eclectic vibe. If you feel like you’ve stumbled into a circus upon walking in, then you’re probably at the Deli Llama. The extensive sandwich menu has a wide variety of distinctly different sandwiches. The Deli Llama offers soups, entree salads and side dishes. Like any respectable sandwich place, the Deli Llama also has vegetarian options. Every item on the menu has a circus-centric name, and so I opted for The Juggler. This sandwich contained roasted chicken, bleu cheese, Granny Smith apple slices, bacon, spinach and honey mustard on eight grain bread. I also tried the Tightrope Walker, a panini with chicken, pesto, provolone, spinach and sundried tomatoes. My companion ordered the Tattooed Lady, which was an albacore tuna salad with Jack cheese, avocado and sprouts. The sandwiches arrived wrapped in parchment paper with a stack of napkins and afterdinner mints. The mints are provided so
I don’t leave the restaurant with bacon breath, I presume. It’s a gesture I appreciate. All of the sandwiches were complex, with several different flavors and textures. As a lifelong lover of sandwiches, I feel truly qualified to say the sandwiches at the Deli Llama were entirely excellent. I particularly enjoyed the crunch of the apples and the chew of the bacon on The Juggler. The Tightrope Walker’s combination of pesto and sun-dried tomatoes was delightful. Lastly, as someone who never orders tuna, I thought the bite I had of the Tattooed Lady was surprisingly light and refreshing. The sandwiches didn’t cost more than $8, with the exception of one: the Lion Tamer made with roast beef, ham and turkey for $8.50. Other menu items such as side dishes and drinks are also reasonably priced. The deli is small, with limited seating inside. However, I found the coziness of the space added to its overall charm. The quirky atmosphere created a sense of community. The friendliness of the staff makes customers feel as though they are enjoying their lunch in an extension of their own home. Overall, the Deli Llama’s sandwiches are splendid, bursting with rich flavors and sustainable ingredients. Using ingredients specific to the local clientele, there is a palpable pride the Deli Llama has in its menu and a substantial loyalty from its customers. Located in the heart of Hillcrest, the funky deli is the perfect complement to an afternoon in the neighborhood or just a treat to get away from studying.

Dinner and dessert dazzle at D Bar christine whitman contributor
D Bar puts a modern spin on traditional dishes. Make it a part of your next night out. chelsea massey, staff photographer
For Aztecs looking for somewhere to go for a date night, birthday celebration or night out with close friends, D Bar is the place. Originally from Denver, D Bar moved to Hillcrest in 2012 and features a modern take on many classic dishes. The term “modern” applies to not just the food, but the atmosphere of hanging lights, dark wood tables and a long, white dessert bar where chefs make the dessert directly in front of customers. D Bar’s mission statement includes, “the food, service and surroundings will serve to rekindle fond food memories and naturally inspire the formation of new ones.” Scouring D Bar’s website the night before helped my roommate and I decide exactly what we wanted: the classics. We had our sights set on Crue fries, bacon mac & cheese, chocolate souffle and Nutella-filled beignets. Most people have had these dishes before, so it was hard for me to decipher how exactly D Bar could make these items “modern.” However, when our waitress brought the appetizer and entree to our table, every doubt left my mind, looking at the melted cheese, bacon and lobster
steaming inside the two large bowls in front of me. The Crue fries are thinly sliced garlic parmesan fries topped with mac sauce, cheddar jack cheese, bacon, ranch and chives. The bacon mac & cheese comes with tempura lobster, four cheeses, cheese nips and panko crumbs. The presentation? Perfection. The portion size? Huge. Take my advice and share what you order, otherwise you’re going to leave the restaurant with half of your meal in a to-go box. After gorging ourselves with steaming cheese-filled items we waited anxiously for the dessert. At this point all skepticism has vanished and I just wanted to see what D Bar was going to do next. We ordered a classic chocolate souffle complete with chocolate sauce, Nutellafilled beignets and praline ice cream. When the waitress finally placed our dessert on the table, we were in awe. The souffle, beignets and ice cream all looked superb, and tasted even more so. I’m sad to say every last bite was devoured within 10 minutes of it reaching our table. D Bar had surpassed every expectation. Modern and delicious, it has great service and is a great place to go for a night out. What more could I ask for with a $35 dinner for two? I will definitely be headed down to Hillcrest more often to sample the rest of what D Bar has to offer.

Wet Stone Wine Bar takes the edge off erik dobko staff writer
Perched upon the concrete waterslide of Bankers Hill sits a dining sanctuary where the lights are dimmed low and the sangrias flow. Come to Wet Stone Wine Bar for a dining experience handcrafted with the utmost attention to detail. I slipped into the restaurant just in time to escape irreversible hearing damage from a Boeing 737 landing overhead. Once inside, the clamor of urban madness faded into the cozy solace of modern bossa nova music and relaxed conversation. The room glowed faintly with entirely natural lighting as intimate candles flickered against various abstract paintings around the room like some kind of Bohemian power outage shelter. Various wine bottles were decoratively stuck into the walls, giving the impression that perhaps even the building was a wino. My girlfriend and I arrived during the 5 to 7 p.m. happy hour, and we immediately set to work on making the most out of the $2 sangria discount. Without delay, we tried the tropical white and stone fruit red sangrias, both of which were dangerously flavorful. The presentation was fantastic as well, each garnished with fruit, mint and a lengthy cinnamon stick. It was almost too aesthetic to drink, like the Mona Lisa with a straw stuck in her head. For our first dish, we ordered the quesadilla do guayaba, consisting of three different Mexican cheeses, guava paste and crema fresca garnished with charred scallions. It had a kind of

texture I hadn’t experienced before in a quesadilla—rather than the cheese being soupy and overly melted, it had a very nice and crumbly consistency similar to that of goat cheese. Shortly thereafter were the pork belly crostinis braised with fennel slaw, Aji amarillo aioli and pickled red onions. My girlfriend found the dish flavorful, but somewhat awkward to eat because of its artsy presentation. The next course was the ahi tuna tartare served with fresh avocado, Peruvian chiles, red onion and cilantro served with toastprints, (toastprint is foodie speak for “small piece of toast”). As I sunk my teeth into it, I could help but let out an uncontrollable moan that quickly made the neighboring table uncomfortable. C’est la vie. The quality
of the fish was incredible. Aside from the aspects that make any piece of ahi tuna amazing, it had that melt-in-your-mouth texture accompanied by a powerful spiciness that contributed to the flavor without the consequential sinus pain. Finally, there was the mango salad with goat cheese, caramelized walnuts and red wine shallot vinaigrette, and the smoked salmon crostini with fresh mozzarella, dill fronds and chives. Both dishes were superb—not in a seeminglybiased-restaurant-review kind of way, but in a sincere, “this place is just really damn good” way. Proprietor and chef Christian Gomez opened up Wet Stone Wine Bar in January 2008, basing it on both his various experiences throughout the last 20 years in the restaurant business and
his own tastes as a foodie and oenophile. “We offer globally inspired small plates and an esoteric wine list in a contemporary, elegantly designed space,” Gomez said. “It’s not just about putting things on a plate and slapping it on (the table). It’s really an arrangement, it’s a feeling, it’s a texture, it’s a color. It’s about the altogether presentation.” “Having lived in Venice Beach for quite a while I was also very into design, and I still am, and so I decided I would make a special kind of conclave so to speak, elementally designed using wood, steel, concrete and stone,” Gomez said. “And so after putting all of those things together between food, drink and ambience, it has really been a fantastic experience for me.” Our hostess, Gentry Faulkner, described the restaurant as “very ambient, very intimate—a great place to bring a date.” I fully agree in that it would be a great spot for dinner with someone you’ve just met, or even someone you’ve known for many years. “Friday nights, though, we get a bit more lively,” Faulkner said. “We’ll have handcrafted sangria pouring out the walls. You can get a really different feel from one night to the next.” Waiting for the check, we washed everything down with more delicious sangria, just for good measure. The total came out to about $70, which was certainly reasonable when you factor in both the quality of the meal and the ambience, for which comfortable is an understatement. We stepped out the door satisfied, sure to soon pass through it once again… but not without a flashlight.

Dessert spot’s menu is “Up2you” elisse miller
features editor A glowing sign hangs in the window. In circus-like lettering it reads, “Open,” drawing the wanderers of Kearny Mesa into a cozy space. Birdcages hang from the ceiling containing naked light bulbs. Empty frames of various sizes are tacked onto the walls, and couches and mismatched tables and chairs make up the seating. Up2you Cafe is a small dessert and drink spot that appeals to the inner hipster in all of us. Up2you Cafe has a menu that matches its one-of-a-kind and quirky decor. Its three main dessert entrees live up to the restaurant’s name regarding the ability to customize and make any order your own. Crepes, honey toasts or Belgian waffles can be ordered with any combo of sauces, fruits, ice creams or other toppings such as nuts or chocolate chips. Honey toast is a dense yellow cake that has an almost bitter taste, disguised by added toppings such as chocolate ice cream and Nutella. However, these three are not the only desserts offered at Up2you Cafe. Sticky rice with mango, cheesecake and a combination of cotton candy and ice cream are also featured on the menu.
The drinks at Up2you Cafe are as intricate and delicious as the dessert items. A gamut of teas is available alongside coffee drinks as simple as a cappuccino or as complex as a peppermint mocha, all of which are served either hot or iced. When a refreshing beverage is needed, tea frappes, fruit smoothies and flavored sodas are available to quench all thirsts. All drinks can be ordered with tapioca pearls (better known as boba) that make the drinks even more delightful. The presentation of the dishes only add to the fun atmosphere. All cold drinks are served in mason jars, and some dessert platters are dusted with sugar or cocoa to form the words, “Up2you Cafe.” Customers will not leave Up2you Cafe either hungry or broke. Dessert portions are shareable, especially when coupled with filling drinks like boba tea. Most customers I spotted had bonded over a hunk of honey toast, shared among multiple people. Honey toast starts at $3.75, and Belgian waffles and crepes start at $3.50. Each topping or sauce costs 50 cents, and each scoop of ice cream or serving of fruit costs $1. Pre-first date freak out
I
can’t remember the last time I was this excited. Hell, I can’t even remember the last time I went on a date. How do I even act? Fork on the left? Spoon on the right? What if I end up talking too much and he gets Billy Mays vibes from me? Should I do that thing at the end of dinner where I reach for my wallet, but the whole time we both know that he’s going to pay? Seriously, it’s 2013. When can I stop doing that whole wallet fake-out thing? Do I wait for him to open the car door? Do I open it myself? What if he doesn’t open the door and I’m just awkwardly standing there? Like, maybe less awkward than Michael Cera, but probably more awkward than Kristen Stewart. Or what if he unlocks the door and I open the door at the exact same time? And then my door locks and he crawls into his side and I wish I could crawl into a hole, but really I’m again just awkwardly standing outside the car door. Why does every fictitious scenario in my head end with me awkwardly standing by myself outside of a car? Sam, breathe. Get a hold of yourself. You’ve done this before. He just wants to take you out to dinner. It’s just dinner. Wait. Is it just dinner? Will there be a movie after? I could have sworn he said he wanted to see a movie. Maybe he just said he likes movies? Sam, everyone likes movies, why would he say that? OK then, I guess we’re going to see a movie. I wonder if we’re actually going out to see one or going back to his house to watch one? Well great, if we’re going to his house, that means I have to shave my legs. If I show off my knees, but I don’t let him touch my knees, subconsciously I hold all of the power. Pretty sure Oprah taught me that. Wouldn’t it be funny if while on the date, I randomly just started talking in an overexaggerated Oprah voice? “You get a tip, you get a tip, everybody gets a tip!” I wonder if he would think I was funny or straight up psychotic. Maybe that’s more second date material. Focus, Sam. What should I wear? Cool, I literally have nothing to wear. Jeans and a blouse could work? Maybe a dress? Whatever. I’m so perpetually bloated, it doesn’t even matter what I wear. Are trash bags in style? Sam, calm down. This guy should be getting on his hands and knees, Wayne and Garth style, chanting, “I’m not worthy,” whenever he is in your presence. You are a hot piece of real estate and any guy would be lucky to own you. I’m pretty sure that came out wrong. Look, you don’t want to look too sexy, but you also don’t want him thinking you’re not interested in doing the deed, either. Ew, who even says “doing the deed?” I’ve become my mother. Why are you thinking about sex with this guy anyway— this is a first date! Cool your jets, Kemosabe. Wait. Is this guy even attractive enough to go out on a date with? I mean, I think he
